How it Works

Before heading off on the tour, guests will be invited for welcome refreshments. With hands-on opportunities to touch and feel intricate car parts, enjoy one to one conversations with experienced technicians, and hosted by your very own personal guide. F1 is a notoriously secretive business, so camera phones are not allowed, but the excitement of seeing one of these exclusive teams behind the scenes will give you an insight into your favourite sport to which few people have been privy before.

I look forward to hearing from you - Kevin May

A Private Tour of the Aston Martin Factory – Tea & Biscuits

Aston Martin Factory sign

If you’re fortunate enough to own an Aston Martin, you’d be remiss to visit Britain and not stop in for a tour of the iconic car maker’s factory. I don’t own an Aston Martin (some day…) but I did get invited by their press team to come take a look while I’m in the UK. After the two hour trip northwest of London, I arrive at the Aston Martin facility in Gaydon. Security is understandably tight, but as long as you’re on the guest list, you’re welcomed with open arms. And what a facility it is. Outside the building sits a beautiful yellow V8 Vantage that appears to be floating on water:

Note: This is an image-heavy article.

Aston Martin Factory floating Vantage

Across the parking lot sits a polished chrome Vantage casually chilling on some rocks:

Aston Martin Factory chrome Vantage

Once I stopped gawking at the cars on display and in the parking lot, I made my way into the building:

Aston Martin Factory building

Inside the lobby sit a few cars including the controversial Cygnet, along with the reception desk, some lounge rooms, and some hanging art that look like giant Cheetos, for some reason:

Aston Martin Gaydon lobby cars

After a bit of a wander, I meet up with Aston Martin exec Mark Gauntlett for a chat and enjoy some tea and biscuits, proper English style:

Aston Martin Factory tea and biscuits

As we walk to the main areas, we happen across a display of some classic Aston Martins with a history of the company laid out on the wall. Sorry for the bad pictures here but it’s difficult to get good shots in this area:

Aston Martin Factory history

Moving on to the production floor, we aren’t allowed to take photos of anything, but Aston has supplied us with some of their own to make up for it. The factory is clean, un-cluttered, and very white. Each station does something different – no moving assembly line business here.

The first station we visit shows us a group of seamstresses stitching each leather interior panel together per each customer’s request, which includes overall interior color, seat and interior panel color, as well as stitching color and type. Again, these can be had standard or custom:

Aston Martin Factory Seamstress

Most of the car is hand-built and assembled. For the Vantage and DB9 range, somewhere around 200 man-hours go into each car, with up to 50 hours of that going into the paint, depending on if you get a standard or special finish. With the One-77 & V12 Zagato , think more along the lines of 2,000 man-hours. Want your car to match your favorite tie? If you’re that pompous (and for the right price,) bring in your tie and the paint guys will match it or whatever color you’d like.

Every current Aston Martin (except the Rapide, which will start production in Gaydon this Summer,) is built in this plant, including the brand new Vanquish , and somewhere around 4,250 cars leave this place a year to get into the hands of their owners. Some of the owners come to the factory, similar to my visit, to see their cars built themselves, then drive it home from here.

While I was visiting, Aston Martin was working on building the special edition Dragon 88 series of cars unveiled at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show for the Chinese Year of the Dragon (and celebrating off-the-chart sales in China along with opening 11 more dealerships there just this year.) They do these special editions from time to time, some of which you really don’t hear much about. The Dragon 88 series is more of a styling package, and could be had on the DBS, Virage, or V8 Vantage S. Aston has created three special colors for the run: Amethyst Red, Volcano Red, and Champagne Gold, and depending on which exterior you choose, you get a different interior: Spicy Red, Deep Purple, or Red Chancellor – all with gold stitching and giant gold dragons embroidered on the headrests. They also get 24-carat gold Aston Martin “wing” badges and commemorative plates on the door sills. As you may have guess from the name, only 88 will be made and sold exclusively to China:

Aston Martin Dragon 88 Virage

Considering its rarity based on number and region, I feel privileged to have seen a few of them.

The basic sequence of construction for the car is as follows: underframe construction, body-in-white (bond panels to underframe), paint preparation (panels hand finished), paint, final assembly (and while the latter two are in motion the trim for the car is being hand made in parallel), which we already covered. Have a look at some of the factory images below to see the construction of an Aston Martin:

Aston Martin body panels on frame

And finally, after each quality check and a final inspection, the car is given its seal of approval:

Aston Martin badge

During my tour, I also had the luck of seeing not only the rare Dragon 88 cars, but the even rarer One-77. What a sight (but again, no pictures allowed, sorry.)

If you’re an Aston Martin customer, contact your dealer to arrange a factory visit. Unfortunately the facility isn’t open to the public, but you might be able to tag along if you know an owner.

Thanks again to Mark, Matt, and Lynne for arranging and facilitating my tour.

I’ve always been a fan of Aston Martin’s cars, and seeing first-hand the work and detail that goes into each one solidifies my feelings. So whataya say guys, maybe the keys next time?

If you’re an Aston Martin owner, did you take a factory tour when you bought your car? Manage to sneak in a different way? What did you think?

Great write up Chris! I would actually love to get the tour myself albeit for other reasons. As an engineer I lead a R&D team for a large solar company ans would love to get a tour of Aston’s plant and see their manufacturing process. Is there anyway you could put me in contact with one of your hosts to see if I could get a tour?

Best regards, Kerry

I was wondering , how could I book a tour ? Best regards

Hi Mohammed, I’m afraid tours aren’t open to the public unless you’re a potential buyer.

Hi, I have been always a big fan of Aston Martin Cars. Can you please let me know how can I get a tour. I would really appreciate if you can get back to me as soon as possible.

Thank you, Heena

Hi Heena, as stated above I’m afraid tours of the facility aren’t open to the public unless you’re a potential customer.

And what if you are a current owner?

I’d contact your dealer and ask

hi chris’ ive ordered a new db11 from a dealer in kent’ and will be coming up to see it being made probably in may/june. ive picked Madagascar orange. would you have any pics you could send of one already done in that colour; as ive only seen colour on the paint chart. many thanks…paul

Bought a 2009 DB9 last year in Canada. Will be visiting Europe 2019 july, any chance to tour factory?

Congrats Ed. That’s something you’d want to contact Aston Martin for. Perhaps through your local dealer?

Aston Martin Residences: Marek Reichman and Germán Coto Discuss the Miami Scheme

According to Wallpaper , the Aston Martin Residences in Miami, an architectural marvel currently under construction, has recently topped out. Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, and Germán Coto, CEO of G&G Business Developments, shed light on this ambitious project. Reichman, having just experienced the construction site’s upper levels, shares his awe at the phenomenal views, underscoring the uniqueness of the location. Coto echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the special nature of the site and the desire to add a distinctive layer of design, leading to the birth of the partnership with Aston Martin.

Architectural Elegance Meets Automotive Grace

The design of the 816ft tower, while not directly mirroring the lines of Aston Martin’s sports cars, resonates with the brand’s ethos of proportion and elegance. The waterfront façade, gently curving like a sail, is more than just an aesthetic triumph; it’s a testament to the meticulous attention to environmental regulations and architectural scrutiny in Miami. The distinct notch at the 55th floor, home to the residents’ fitness center, spa, and outdoor infinity pool, and the dramatic penthouse levels above give the building a standout presence amidst Miami’s skyline.

Unique Residences with a Touch of Aston Martin

The higher the residences, the more unique they become, Reichman reveals. The pinnacle of luxury is the top-level Triplex Penthouse, priced at a projected $50 million. The future owner will receive not just an extraordinary home but also the keys to one of the 24 Aston Martin Vulcans ever built. Additionally, there will be a ‘Signature Collection’ of apartments, each accompanied by an Aston Martin DB11 or DBX, integrating the essence of the brand’s luxury into the living space.

A Fusion of Design Expertise and Detail

Reichman admits to the enlightening experience of architectural design, drawing parallels and contrasts with car design. The importance of minute details, such as door handles and leather stitching, reflects the meticulous design philosophy Aston Martin is known for. Carbon fiber, extensively used in fixtures and furniture, is another testament to the brand’s expertise. Coto highlights Miami’s cosmopolitan nature as a perfect backdrop for such a project, with Reichman agreeing that the city is more than capable of embracing this architectural endeavor.

This upcoming addition to Miami’s skyline, set to be the city’s second tallest tower, is not just a building; it’s a carefully crafted masterpiece that will stand as a testament to the fusion of automotive elegance and architectural innovation. The Aston Martin Residences promise to be a landmark of luxury , resonating with the sophistication and detail-oriented philosophy of its creators.

2024 F1 Canadian GP results: Verstappen wins wild wet/dry race

Verstappen beat McLaren ’s Lando Norris and George Russell of Mercedes in an action-packed race held in mixed weather conditions.

2024 F1 Canadian Grand Prix results

2024 f1 canadian grand prix report.

Polesitter Russell led the charge to Turn 1 in wet conditions ahead of Verstappen and the McLarens of Norris and Piastri.

Daniel Ricciardo’s good work in qualifying was undone when he fell back from fifth to seventh, passed by Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). Ricciardo (RB) was also given a 5s penalty for a false start.

Unlike most of the field on intermediates, Kevin Magnussen started his Haas on full wets and charged up to eighth on the first lap from 14 th on the grid. He then passed Ricciardo, Hamilton and Alonso for fifth.

Magnussen took fourth from Piastri at the hairpin on lap three and closed on Norris by setting a string of fastest laps until the sun came out on lap six and it crossed over in favour of in the intermediates again. Magnussen pitted on lap eight for inters, which weren’t ready – resulting in an 8.6s stop and him tumbling back to 14 th .

Russell was a second clear of Verstappen by lap 10, 7s clear of Norris and Piastri. Alonso and Hamilton battled for fifth. Nico Hulkenberg (Haas), who also started on wets, surged up to seventh, but began to fall back by lap 12 and pitted for inters a lap later.

Verstappen put pressure on Russell until he ran long at Turn 1, briefly cutting going across the grass, allowing Norris on to his tail.

As the track dried, Norris DRS-ed past Verstappen for second on lap 20 and set off after Russell, who had been as much as 2s ahead. Norris repeated his move on Russell to take the lead, but Russell went straight on at the chicane and lost second to Verstappen too.

The rain clouds gathered once more as they eked their inters to the next rainstorm but Logan Sargeant spun his Wiliams and couldn’t restart, causing a safety car.

Surprisingly, Norris didn’t pit as Verstappen, Russell and Piastri all stopped for new inters. Norris pitted a lap later, but that dropped him behind Verstappen and Russell.

At the restart on lap 30, Verstappen led Russell, Norris and Piastri, with Hamilton getting ahead of Alonso for fifth during the pit cycle. Yuki Tsunoda jumped up to seventh, as he didn’t pit for fresh inters, ahead of Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Esteban Ocon (up from 18 th in his Alpine, also on his original inters) and Ricciardo (who took his 5s penalty under the safety car).

The rain returned almost immediately, allowing Verstappen to pull away by 1.5s at half distance – although he had to swerve around an errant groundhog that ran across the track in front of him.

Norris straight-lined the first corners on lap 42, dropping him back from Russell. Hamilton pitted from fifth for slicks on lap 44, followed in by Piastri a tour later.

Verstappen and Russell stopped on lap 45, as Norris stayed out for two laps and set fastest lap. He pitted on lap 47, rejoining side-by-side with Verstappen but without the heat in his tyres and he fishtailed to second.

Norris locked up and ran wide at the hairpin on lap 49, which allowed Russell to get a good exit and used DRS to pass into second place. But two laps later, Russell ran wide and bounced across the kerbs, allowing Norris ahead of him once more.

The safety car was required again when Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari spun and Alex Albon ’s Williams collected him, moments after Sergio Perez had crashed his Red Bull backwards into the wall.

Russell and Hamilton opted to pit for fresh mediums.

Verstappen bolted away at the restart on lap 59, quickly gapping Norris by 2s, who had Piastri, Russell and Hamilton on his tail. Russell attacked Piastri with 16 laps remaining at the chicane, but Piastri shoved him straight on, which allowed Hamilton past his team-mate to pick up fourth.

Hamilton grabbed third by DRS-ing past Piastri with six laps to go, with Russell doing likewise a tour later.

Verstappen won by 3.8s over Norris. Russell grabbed third from Hamilton with a couple of laps remaining. Piastri was a distant fifth, ahead of Alonso and Stroll.

A monumental scrap was fought out in the closing stages between Alpine and RB for eighth, with Ocon, Tsunoda, Ricciardo and Gasly all nose-to-tail. Tsunoda crashed out of the points at Turn 9, almost wiping out several cars.

Ricciardo finished eighth from Gasly and Ocon.

Ferrari suffered a woeful day, with Sainz going out with accident damage and Charles Leclerc forced to retire after an engine problem plagued him from the start.

F1 Grand Prix of Canada - Qualifying

Last season only three drivers won a Formula 1 Grand Prix : Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez, and Carlos Sainz Jr.

Today’s Canadian Grand Prix is the ninth Grand Prix of the season and four drivers — Verstappen, Sainz, Lando Norris, and Charles Leclerc — have reached the top step of the podium. That mere fact speaks to the compacted field this year, particularly at the pointy end of the grid, and the potential title fight that is emerging in F1.

Can George Russell made it five?

Russell’s stunning performance in qualifying, where and Verstappen posted the exact same time in Q3 but the Mercedes driver secured pole position by putting in his lap first, gives him a chance at his first win of the 2024 campaign. But what will it take to hold off the three-time Drivers’ Champion, who starts alongside him?

A bit of strategy, and perhaps a bit of luck, according to the Mercedes driver.

“I think it’s going to be a tough race for everybody, to be honest. Graining seems to be an issue. And this new track surface, nobody really knows how it’s going to pan out. But we’ve got to go for victory,” said Russell following qualifying on Saturday .

“The car is genuinely really, really fast at the moment. But it’s going to be a long race, I think. As soon as you fall off that cliff of the [tires] tomorrow, it’s going to be really difficult to recover,” added Russell. “So, yeah, it could be a bit of a strategic game. Maybe not as extreme as we saw in Monaco last week, but maybe something similar.”

Here is the full starting grid, and some more questions that will be answered later today:

Can Max Verstappen thunder to the front?

Over the past few F1 seasons, one of the most uncomfortable positions in the sport has been P1 ... when you have nothing but Max Verstappen in your rear-view mirrors.

That will be the scene for Russell heading into Turn 1 and then Turn 2, known as Virage Senna.

Can Russell hold him off? And if he manages to keep the lead, how long can he keep it for?

Looking at their fastest laps from yesterday — Verstappen’s performance in Q3 and Russell’s 1:11.742 in Q2, which was the fastest lap from anyone Saturday — you can see where Russell and the W15 had an advantage over Verstappen.

On the straights:

That is the telemetry data for those two laps, courtesy of F1-Tempo . Russell’s strength on the straights, particularly the long Casino Straight heading into the final chicane by the Wall of Champions, could be huge on Sunday in this race.

It is also a departure from recent years, when the pure power of the Red Bull challengers gave them the advantage on sections like the Casino Straight. For example, here is last year’s telemetry data from the Canadian Grand Prix, which saw Verstappen win, and Fernando Alonso finish in P2:

Times have changed.

Verstappen may still win on Sunday, but it is not a given like it has been in year’s past.

What is the right strategy?

This might be the biggest question heading into Sunday.

What is the right strategy, given the newly resurfaced track in Montreal?

According to Pirelli’s Strategy Guide, the new surface in Montreal has made a two-stop strategy the likely solution for teams:

But which two-stop? The medium-hard-hard shown first? Or the medium-hard-medium offered as option two?

According to Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Director of Motorsport, the graining and degradation issues they have seen on the medium tires this weekend makes Option 1 more likely.

“Luckily, we had that one dry session,” said Isola . “We were expecting a mix between one- and two-stop strategies but the wear and degradation we measured on the medium compound is higher than expected. I believe this will push teams onto a two-stop.”

Will a team starting outside the points roll the dice on a one-stopper? This is the path Alexander Albon rode to a P7 in last year’s race, as he stopped on Lap 12 and switched from the medium compound to a set of hards. He then delivered a stunning 58-lap performance on that set of hards, for a tremendous result.

Could that be Sergio Pérez’s path to points?

Of course, all of this assumes a dry race ...

What does the weather hold in store?

This might be the biggest question of the day.

What do the weather gods have in store for the field in Montreal?

According to the Weather Channel , there is a 58% chance of rain right after lights go out for the Canadian Grand Prix. And moments ago in one of the support races — the Porsche Carrera Cup North America — wet conditions led to this:

All week long drivers and teams have talked about the potential impact from the weather, and how the results on Sunday might come down to which team makes the right strategy calls ... and when they make them.

That is looking very likely as the Canadian Grand Prix approaches.

What about Aston Martin?

A team that has perhaps fallen down the pecking order and flown under the radar a bit this season?

Aston Martin.

They were the darlings of the early season a year ago, evidenced by Alonso’s P2 in this race last season. But they arrived in Montreal sitting just fifth in the Constructors’ Championship standings, 52 points behind fourth-place Mercedes.

Can they have a bounceback performance today?

Saturday was a strong result for the team, as Alonso will start up in P6, while Lance Stroll also starts in a points position, as he will roll off the line ninth. That gives Aston Martin a very good chance at accomplishing something they have done just twice this season:

A double-points weekend.

Team Principal Mike Krack outlined after qualifying how the circuit in Montreal might be a good fit for the AMR24.

“We achieved our target of getting both cars through to Q3 this afternoon in Montréal with the prospect of rain not amounting to much in the end. Our pace has been better at our ‘home’ race but we are not getting carried away. It was a close battle and encouraging to only be a few tenths away from pole position,” said Krack.

“We made good use of the used [tires] which got both Lance and Fernando through to Q3 ahead of the Ferraris,” added the Aston Martin boss. “They both drove very well with an ever-changing track. The AMR24 is certainly more suited to this circuit and we will work overnight to optimise our prospects for tomorrow’s race and give the local crowd something to cheer.”
