10 State Parks In Washington With Scenic Hikes

12 top travel destinations in the us for 2024, 10 underrated small beach towns in florida to kick the winter blues.

Australia Zoo is one of the most famous zoos in all of Australia - not least because of the fame of the Australian zookeeper, conservationist, and TV personality Steve Irwin. This zoo is home to animals from all over the world and not only from Australia. Its reptile section is particularly impressive and offers a perfect family day out.

Australia has a lot to offer every visitor as it is an incredibly diverse country and truly ancient land. Continue up the coast of the state of Queensland and one will find one of the oldest rainforests in the world in Daintree National Park . Just off the coast of Queensland, one will find one of the ocean's greatest marvels, the awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef - easily the largest reef system in the world .

Steve Irwin - The Crocodile Hunter

Steve Irwin (aka Stevo, aka The Crocodile Hunter) wowed audiences around the world with his documentary shows exhibiting wildlife around the world. He was famous for catching venomous snakes on camera and rescuing crocodiles.

His documentaries offered the greatest contrast to the passive nature documentaries of the BBC's David Attenborough anyone could hope to find. Steve Irwin was a conservationist and often sought to rescue animals from dangerous habitats and rehabilitate them into new ones.

  • Born:   February 22, 1962, in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria

He and his wife Terri worked tirelessly to improve the family wildlife park (now called Australia Zoo). They benefited from the success of the series The Crocodile Hunter .

Tragically in 2006, Steve Irwin died in a freak accident while filming a new documentary in Australia's Great Barrier Reef. He passed away after being pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray. Today his wife and children continue to operate Australia Zoo in Queensland and is a wildlife park that anyone in Brisbane should visit.

The Animals Of Australia Zoo

Australia Zoo is not the largest zoo in the country but is home to many of the most iconic animals of the world. It is home to most of Australia's strange assortment of wildlife. Some of the more notable birds include cassowaries, emus, macaws, kookaburras, cockatoos, and Andean condors.

They boast many mammals the children will love like giraffes, cheetahs, Sumatran elephants, kangaroos, lemurs, rhinos, tigers, zebras, wombats, and koalas to name a few.

Notable reptiles include many pythons, boa constrictors, scores and scores of venomous and non-venomous snakes, saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, American alligators, Komodo dragons, Aldabra giant tortoise, anacondas, and many more.

Ever wanted to touch, pet, and walk with a real-life tiger? Australia Zoo offers visitors the chance to pet this the largest of the cats. On the Tiger Walk , one will join their beautiful Sumatran tigers and their trained keepers on one of their daily walks.

This is an experience of a lifetime and one will be amazed at the sheer size of these kitties and the haunting intensity of their eyes. Help the zoo with its conservation efforts to protect this critically endangered type of tiger.

The Blue Mountains Deluxe Day is a real journey into the heart of a unique World Heritage Region. From temperate rainforests to towering sandstone escarpments, you’ll see and experience it all. Let the landscape work its wonders and become part of you for a lifetime.

Upon departing from the city, you will travel directly to the Blue Mountains and your first stop of the day is at Calmsley Hill Farm, a working farm home to KangarooS, Emus, Wombats and Koalas. Enjoy morning tea and time to wander at leisure.

From Calmsley Hill you will continue to ascend the Blue Mountains via the highway. Visit one of a range of stunning outlooks of Jamison Valley, overlooking beautiful vistas. Where possible this will be away from the crowds of tours that visit the mountains each day with other operators. Thus, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing, stress-free environment taking in the views and information imparted by your guide.

Continuing on you will arrive at Eaglehawk Lookout, a remote lookout point away from the crowds for views of the famous Three Sisters. While the Blue Mountains features so much more than this natural attraction, you can’t help but admire the unquestionable beauty of this amazing rock formation. The character of the Three Sisters changes throughout the day and throughout the seasons as the sunlight brings out the magnificent natural colors. Here your guide will discuss the legends behind this famous rock formation and time available for you to take some great photos.

Next you will be taken around the mountain towards the village of Blackheath to your lunch venue, the Hydro Majestic. Here in this relaxed venue with stunning views, you can enjoy a 2-course lunch with tea or coffee. All diets are catered for (excluding Kosher Meals). Please note that beverages can be purchased at your own expense from the Bar.

The afternoon is spent visiting a selection of lookouts. Once you clap your eyes on the view from Govetts Leap you’ll know why it’s one of the most famous lookouts in Australia. The magnificent waterfall drops a whopping 180m to the base of the cliff. If you’re not mesmerized by the dancing waves of water spray, you’ll be transfixed by the sweeping views down the valley to the Grose Wilderness.

Then take a brief stop to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine or orange juice at the delightful Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens, where you can enjoy the sweeping views across to Sydney before traveling down the Bells Line of Road to arrive back at your hotel approximately 4:30pm.

Historic Overview

As you enjoy the view, your experienced Driver Guide will give you an overview of the fascinating history of Uluru and Kata Tjuta National Park. The Aboriginal people have lived in the area for 22,000 years, so there’s plenty of history to cover.

Just 40 kilometres to the west of the iconic Uluru, we’ll take in the sites of Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas. When you stop at a viewing platform that boasts the most spectacular views of Kata Tjuta, be sure to have your camera at the ready.

Arguably Australia’s most recognisable and fascinating icon, Uluru (Ayers Rock) stands 348 metres high, however, most of its mass is below ground level. You’ll be overwhelmed by its monolithic size, presence and inherent spirituality.

As the sun sets over the western horizon, you’ll be witness to the majestic presence and many shades of colour for which Uluru is most famous. Be sure to have your Driver Guide take a photo of you with Uluru – although they say that the memory will stay with you forever!
