On Her Renaissance Tour, the World Is Beyoncé’s Ball

The pop superstar’s first solo outing in seven years draws on the dance-music cultures that inspired her 2022 album, and her work that led up to that ecstatic release.

Reporting from Toronto

It was a crowd that had come to dance, dressed for a rodeo in the distant future: sparkling cowboy hats, silvery fringe, outré sunglasses and any other sartorial detail that represented “Renaissance,” Beyoncé’s dazzling seventh album and the occasion for her first solo tour in seven years. But as the imperial pop superstar took the stage at the Rogers Center in Toronto on Saturday night for the first North American show of her Renaissance World Tour, she reminded the club-ready audience just who was in charge. Because if they were prepared to move, she was going to make them wait a little longer.

Setting the table for a two-and-a-half-hour performance that was visually spectacular, vocally ambitious and sometimes tonally confused, Beyoncé, 41 — clad in a glimmering chain-mail mini dress — began the show with a nearly 30-minute stretch of ballads and deep cuts that harked back to her past: an acrobatically sung solo rendition of the 2001 Destiny’s Child track “Dangerously in Love,” a bit of “Flaws and All” from the deluxe edition of her 2007 album “B’Day,” and the sparse, soulful “1+1” from 2011, which she belted atop a mirrored piano.

It was a both a display of her vocal agility and a curiously traditional way to start a show centered around an album as conceptually bold and forward-thinking as “Renaissance” — a sprawling, knowingly referential romp through the history of dance music , with an emphasis on the contributions of Black and queer innovators. Here, instead, was a stopover in Beyoncé’s Middle Ages.

As a live entertainer, though, she has earned a fresh start. The Renaissance World Tour shows are some of Beyoncé’s first appearances since her dazzling, commanding performance headlining the 2018 Coachella festival (later released as the concert film and live album “Homecoming”), which served as a kind of mic-drop capstone to her career thus far. It would be futile to repeat that, and difficult to top it. The loose, fluid “Renaissance,” still said to be the first part of a trilogy , represents a new chapter in Beyoncé’s recorded oeuvre. And once the show finally found its center and, however belatedly, welcomed the crowd to the Renaissance, it heralded her maturity as a performer, too.

The show’s look — as projected in diamond-sharp definition onto a panoramic screen — conjured Fritz Lang’s “ Metropolis ” by way of the 1990 drag ball documentary “Paris Is Burning.” After a lengthy video introduction, Beyoncé emerged from a chrome cocoon and vamped through a thrilling stretch of the first suite of “Renaissance” songs; during “Cozy,” most strikingly, a pair of hydraulic robotic arms centered her body in industrial picture frames, like a post-human Mona Lisa.

In May, when Beyoncé began the European leg of the Renaissance World Tour, rumors swirled that she may have been recovering from a foot injury, since her choreography was a bit more static and less stomp-heavy than usual. The Toronto show did nothing to dispel that chatter, but it also showed that it doesn’t matter much. Perhaps because of some constraints, Beyoncé has embraced new means of bodily expression. She brought the flavor of ball movements into the show and served face all night, curling her lip like a hungry predator, widening her eyes in mock surprise, scrunching her features in exaggerated disgust.

Few seats in the stadium provided a legible view of Beyoncé’s face, of course, though the screen took care of that. She played expertly to the cameras that followed her every choreographed move, aware of how she’d appear to the majority of the audience and — perhaps just as crucially — in FOMO-inducing social media videos. The stage itself was breathtaking, featuring an arced cutout section of the screen that made for playful visuals, but its full grandeur was not visible from many of the side seats, making the band and sometimes the dancers difficult to see.

The screen, though, was the point. Beyoncé’s two solo releases before “Renaissance” — her 2013 self-titled album and “Lemonade,” from 2016 — were billed as “visual albums,” featuring a fully realized music video for each track. Again toying with her fans’ anticipation, she has still not released any videos from “Renaissance,” giving the previously unseen graphics that filled her expansive backdrop an added impact, and making them feel more weighty than a convenient way to pass time between costume changes.

Many of the tour’s outfits struck a balance between Beyoncé’s signature styles — megawatt sparkles, high-cut bodysuits — and the futuristic bent of “Renaissance.” She played haute couture bee in custom Mugler by Casey Cadwallader and glimmered in a Gucci corset draped with crystals. But the night’s most memorable look — so instantly iconic that a few fans had already tried to replicate it, from photos of the European shows — was a flesh-tone catsuit by the Spanish label Loewe, embellished with a few suggestively placed, red-fingernailed hands.

Throughout the set, Beyoncé wove interpolations of her predecessors’ songs throughout her own, as if to place her music in a larger continuum. The grandiose “I Care” segued into a bit of “River Deep, Mountain High,” in honor of Tina Turner, who died in May . The cheery throwback “Love on Top” contained elements of the Jackson 5’s “Want You Back.” Most effective was the “Queens Remix” she performed of “Break My Soul,” which mashes up the “Renaissance” leadoff single with Madonna’s “Vogue,” paying homage to the mainstream pop star who brought queer ball culture to the masses before her. (The merch on sale at a Renaissance Tour pop-up shop in the days before the show included a hand-held fan emblazoned with the song title “Heated” for $40. It sold out.)

The show contained moments that sometimes felt conceptually cluttered and at odds with the “Renaissance” album’s sharp vision, like dorm-room-poster quotes from Albert Einstein and Jim Morrison that filled the screen during video montages. The middle stretch, arriving with a lively “Formation,” featured Beyoncé and her dancers clad in camo print, riding and occasionally writhing atop a prop military vehicle. There was a wordless, gestural power in the moment she and her entourage held their fists in the air, referencing a salute that had rankled some easily rankle-able viewers of the 2016 Super Bowl Halftime Show. But if Beyoncé was calling for any more specific forms of protest or political awareness — especially in a moment when drag culture and queer expression are being threatened at home and throughout the world — those went unarticulated.

Beyoncé’s endurance as a world-class performer remained the show’s raison d’être; she is the rare major pop star who prizes live vocal prowess. By the end of the long night — and especially during the striking closing number, the disco reverie “Summer Renaissance,” when she floated above the crowd like a deity on a glittering horse — she extended the microphone to lend out some of the high notes to her eager and adoring fans. “Until next time,” she said, keeping the stage banter relatively minimal and pat. “Drive home safe!”

Even when Beyoncé embraces styles and cultures known for their improvisational looseness, she still seems to be striving toward perfection — a pageant smile always threatens to break through the stank face. Commanding a stadium-sized audience, she was an introvert wearing an extrovert’s armor. That tension is part of both her boundless charm and her occasional limitations as a performer. And it makes moments of genuine spontaneity all the more prized.

Naturally, #RenaissanceWorldTour was trending on Twitter long after the show, but one of the clips that went viral was unplanned. During a rousing performance of her early hit “Diva,” Beyoncé accidentally dropped her sunglasses. She fumbled them for a second, mouthed an expletive as they fell to the ground, and gave a sincere, shrugging grin before snapping back into the choreography’s formation. For a fleeting moment, she seemed human after all.

  • Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Adele top nominees for 2023 Grammy Awards
  • Beyoncé is in her Renaissance era with 1st studio album in 6 years

The highly anticipated tour announcement she made on Instagram  and her website Wednesday comes days before the Grammy Awards on Sunday, where she is the most nominated artist and could make Recording Academy history yet again.

Beyoncé, the most decorated woman in Grammy history with 28 wins, could break the late Hungarian-British conductor Georg Solti's record for most wins if she takes home four awards.

Her 2022 album,  Renaissance , is a celebration of dance music and is nominated for album of the year.

There were hints that Beyoncé might tour again after she performed an invite-only show in January in Dubai at the Atlantis The Royal Resort, her first show in four years. Her last solo tour was in 2016, but she went on tour with her husband Jay-Z in 2018.

Ticketmaster said in a release that sales for the shows will begin Feb. 6 and fans will need to register through their Verified Fan system. Sale times will vary based on city.

Another Ticketmaster war is on the horizon as the BeyHive prepares for battle. After weeks of speculation, Beyoncé has officially confirmed a world tour in support of Renaissance , scheduled to make stops in stadiums across the world in 2023 .

The musician confirmed the news on Wednesday morning. The tour will begin in Europe this May before landing in North America on July 8 with back-to-back nights at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. The tour will make stops in Philadelphia, Nashville, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and more.

The Renaissance tour marks Beyoncé’s first extended stretch on the road since the On the Run tour, which made 48 stops across North America and Europe in 2018. Those shows were proceeded by the singer’s redefining Coachella performance, which arrived as the Netflix concert film Homecoming the following year.

The clips sparked multiple viral moments, the most notable being Beyoncé’s new vocal arrangements on familiar records, including “Drunk in Love” and “Countdown.” The private concert, notably, did not include any Renaissance tracks on the setlist, even the chart-topping lead single “Break My Soul.”

The tour announcement arrives as a saving grace for a starved BeyHive, still yearning for any meaningful visual companion pieces to the singer’s acclaimed seventh studio album. If Beyoncé is heading on the road again, maybe the wait for the music videos she teased in the record release trailer won’t be too much longer.

“As is customary for her, she layers the album with enough totems to fuel a million think pieces and dissertations,” Rolling Stone shared of Renaissance . “Yet it’s also possible to simply dance and vibe to the music. This is Beyoncé at her joyous peak, and you won’t get it unless you pull the “plastic off the sofa,” “drop it like a thottie,” and enjoy Queen Bey at her thrilling best.”

Where can you get tickets?

Tickets for the North American leg of the tour will be available through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program. Tickets will go on sale Monday, Feb 6, with an exclusive presale to BeyHive members, according to a Live Nation press release.

Verified Fan registration is now open. Once you register, you'll be placed in a lottery system that determines which fans get invited to purchase tickets. Registration alone doesn't guarantee tickets. If you're selected, you'll get an access code the day before tickets go on sale. Everyone else will be placed on a waitlist. According to Live Nation, this process is intended to help Ticketmaster weed out the resellers and verify your account so that actual fans get priority to buy tickets.

Citi cardmembers will have a special Citi Presale after the Verified Fan process. Get more details here . Verizon will also offer an exclusive presale through their customer loyalty program Verizon Up .

Will Beyoncé be using Ticketmaster like Taylor Swift to sell tickets?

Yes, but given what happened with Taylor Swift's Eras tour (and the fact it led to Congressional hearings about Ticketmaster ’s practices), it seems very likely both Beyoncé and Ticketmaster would want to avoid repeating that mess. That most likely explains the usage of the Verified Fan system.

Where will Beyoncé be playing?

The Renaissance World Tour will hit 40 cities in North America and across Europe. Stops include Paris, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Houston, and many more.

What has Beyoncé said about the Renaissance World Tour?

She just announced it was happening with a post on February 1. Her website didn't immediately contain any more details. But during the Wearable Art Gala in October 2022, she appeared to confirm it would start this summer, as a backstage tour with her mother Tina Lawson was up for auction at the event.

Will Beyoncé be performing at the Grammys (on February 5) and sharing more tour details there?

Not clear yet, but she is the most nominated artist at the ceremony . On January 21, Variety reported that “ talks with show producers are ongoing for a possible onstage appearance ” by Beyoncé.

What can we expect from the tour on stage?

Beyoncé hasn't shared that yet either, but given the artistry she put into her recent Dubai show , it's fair to say we can expect no less than excellence, elaborate costumes, and an incredible experience.

This post will be updated the moment more detail is released.

What will the stage be like for the Renaissance World Tour?

According to reports, the stage for Bey's tour is set to be huge.

A source close to the production revealed that: "The structure for the stage is gigantic and on a totally different scale from any other tour right now – that’s why she needed a huge venue to rehearse in.

And she can’t run through the show in any of the stadiums she is performing in because they aren’t soundproofed and people would hear what she was preparing.

She is on top form and is pulling out all the stops to make this a truly groundbreaking tour."

Beyoncé has announced that she’s touring in support of her latest album, Renaissance . The tour begins with a European leg in May, followed by dates in Canada and the United States that extend from from early July through late September. It’s her first tour since her 2018 co-headlining On the Run II Tour with Jay-Z behind their collaborative album, Everything Is Love , and her first headlining tour since 2016’s Formation World Tour behind Lemonade . The Renaissance World Tour is produced by Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation. See all of the dates below.

Renaissance arrived July 29, rising swiftly to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and marking Beyoncé’s seventh album to summit the albums chart. It is the first act in what will be a three-part series, she has indicated.

Beyoncé hinted at her world tour in late October, during the fifth annual Wearable Art Gala, where the raffle included “ a UNIQUE experience ” to see her on the Renaissance tour. Purported images from the auction featured descriptions of the summer 2023 trek. Valued at $20,000, the package included first-class plane tickets, a three-night hotel stay, two concert tickets, and a guided backstage tour from Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles aka Miss Tina. Beyoncé was reportedly in attendance at the gala. In January, she performed at the opening of a new luxury resort in Dubai, but did not play any Renaissance material at the private concert . It was her first live performance since 2020.

Since sharing Renaissance , Beyoncé has made a few adjustments to the album; she replaced ableist lyrics in “ Heated ,” and removed an interpolation of Kelis ’ “Milkshake” on “Energy” after Kelis said she was not informed by Beyoncé and her team that her music was going to be used on the new album. Beyoncé also dropped Honey Dijon and Madonna remixes of “ Break My Soul .”

In 2019, Beyoncé released Homecoming: The Live Album . The next year, she shared Black Is King , a visual album based on her 2019 soundtrack for The Lion King: The Gift . (Beyoncé voiced adult Nala in the CGI remake film.) On Juneteenth of that year, she surprise-released “ Black Parade ,” which would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance . At the same ceremony, she also won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song (for her feature on the remix of Megan Thee Stallion ’s “ Savage ”), as well as Best Music Video (for The Gift ’s “ Brown Skin Girl ”). “ Be Alive ”—her contribution to the King Richard soundtrack—was nominated for an Oscar at last year’s ceremony.

Beyoncé is nominated for nine honors at the 2023 Grammy Awards : Record of the Year , Song of the Year , and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Break My Soul”; Album of the Year and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance ; Best R&B Performance for “Virgo’s Groove”; Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa”; Best R&B Song for “Cuff It”; and Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Be Alive.”

Beyoncé is back to show us what stars are made of

The first U.S. show of her dazzling Renaissance tour sparkled in every way

beyonce world tour toronto

PHILADELPHIA — Peep this cosmic slop: Nearly every surface was either sequined up or chromed out, and there were these giant robotic arms that knew how to vogue, and there was a Mars rover with hydraulics and a stripper pole on the roof, and when it appeared as if P-Funk had suddenly landed the Mothership in the end zone of this earthly football stadium next to I-95, the hatch opened to reveal a metallic scallop containing a disco Venus singing words that turned the July air even hotter, but then she transformed into an anime mecha with alloy antlers before finally mounting a stallion made of disco ball and riding it into history, the same way Bianca Jagger pranced that white horse through Studio 54 back in 1977.

Maximalism has always been Beyoncé's thing. If you want people to have a blast, you blast them. That means the glitzy, blitzy launch of her current world tour’s domestic leg at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Wednesday night felt like a retinal bombardment of scrupulously detailed choreography, costuming, stage lighting, set design, interstitial videos, metallurgical stage props and more. Even her music threatened to violate its own innate invisibility, thickening the air from the moment the show opened with “ Dangerously in Love ,” a gem from her rookie seasons in Destiny’s Child. “I love you, I love you, I love you,” Beyoncé sang copiously and attentively, as if testing how many notes she could fit into the three magic monosyllables that ultimately bind humanity. A few moments later, during the titular hook of “ I Care ,” she was showing and telling in the same freighted breath.

Bedazzled and jet lagged, the Beyhive swarms Stockholm for ‘Renaissance’

Most stadium-grade pop extravaganzas stash all the ballads and midtempo stuff in the middle of the show, giving the singer a chance to regain themselves. Beyoncé turned in her homework early and didn’t look back. Once the sun had fully checked out of the sky for the night, she happily shimmied into her newest songs from “Renaissance,” a sparkly album that taps into the hereditary pulses of disco and house music while quietly subverting the traditional equation that fun equals careless abandon. In Beyoncé's sound-world, the good times are so tightly girded by her intensity, her commitment, her circumspection, that all the catharsis ends up shooting out of the music like laser light. And in case you couldn’t see-hear-feel it during the gummy bounce of “ Cuff It ,” her lyrics asked the question straight up: “Have you ever had fun like this?” Before a complete answer could be formed, she experienced a wardrobe malfunction that was minor but unforgettable. She literally sang her sunglasses off her face.

Everyone in the crowd managed to keep their clothes on — as evidenced by thousands of sequined outfits casting their delicate, woozy, cosmic reflections into neighboring airspaces. This kind of sparkle is obviously meant to feel emblematic of opulence and extravagance, or maybe even magic. Prices vary between the jeweler and the craft store, but some scientists suspect it goes much deeper than that. They think our attraction to glitter and gloss is likely rooted in our evolutionary attraction to water.

At a Beyoncé concert, where notions of fabulousness and survival feel tightly intertwined, that all made a special kind of sense — especially during “ Break My Soul ,” a throbbing self-reliance anthem that Beyoncé made shimmery during its “la-la-la-la” intro, then heavier than life in its conclusion, its unresolved search “for something that lives inside of me.” In between, the entire song transformed into an interpolation of Madonna’s “Vogue” — but instead of dishing up a sangfroidy little rap about Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Beyoncé shouted out Aaliyah, Bessie Smith, Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, Janet Jackson, Grace Jones, Sade, Aretha Franklin and at least a dozen other Black queens of soul and hip-hop music.

She’s so good at this, so good at telling a musical story bigger than herself, even while proving she’s a singular proposition for the ages. Now, more than a quarter-century into her fame, it’s clear that Beyoncé is done with the pop market forever-ever, having opted to funnel countless Black traditions into a recombinant style of songmaking that very much belongs to her alone. That breadth of vision requires tight focus and loose imagination — and it results in the sequined multitudes spending a hot summer night listening to one of the greatest vocalists alive sing “ Cozy ” while she dances with real robots, then coo “ Partition ” while she zooms around on her fake space rover, then purr “ Virgo’s Groove ” from inside a cosmic seashell where time doesn’t exist. Ever have fun like this?

The announcement photo may look familiar to fans, as she donned the same glittery attire on the cover of her seventh studio album. Bey also added “Renaissance World Tour” on her Instagram bio, further accenting the news. Last week, Beyonce performed a full concert for the first time in four years at a luxury resort in Dubai in front of influencers and journalists. The 19-song set included a collaboration with her oldest daughter Blue Ivy as the two performed “Brown Skin Girl,” which earned them a Grammy two years ago for best music video.

Crowned a triumphant win by music lovers, Renaissance stormed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last year and rattled off two Hot 100 top 10 hits, including her chart-topper “Break My Soul.” The dance-centric album also notched nine Grammy nominations, the most for any nominee for this year’s ceremony. Bey is looking to rack up more trophy wins, as she currently sits at a staggering 28 wins. Nominated for album of the year, song, and record of the year, Bey is facing some stout competition , especially in the former. The R&B juggernaut will tango against Adele, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, and more for album of the year. A win in this category would serve as Beyonce’s first. The 65th Grammy Awards will occur Sunday night in Los Angeles at 8 pm EST.

Beyoncé dazzles Toronto in the North American debut of her Renaissance World Tour

This article was published more than 6 months ago. Some information may no longer be current.

beyonce world tour toronto

Beyoncé's first solo tour in seven years is a silver-coloured ultramodern spectacle and R&B space opera that takes its name from her latest album, 2022′s Renaissance. Kevin Mazur/Supplied

Near the end of a 2½-hour extravaganza at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Saturday, a bedazzled superstar sang a question to her audience: “Baby, can I take you all the way?”

The song was Summer Renaissance , the singer was Beyoncé, and the question literally hung in the air. Floating above the crowd atop a flying crystallized horse, the shiny singer trotted the air as a finale to a jaw-dropping show.

All the way – how much further could she go?

The Toronto concert, the first of two here on the weekend, opened the North American leg of a stadium tour that arrives at Vancouver’s BC Place on Sept. 11. Beyoncé's first solo jaunt in seven years is a silver-coloured ultramodern spectacle and R&B space opera that takes its name from her latest (and arguably finest) album, 2022′s Renaissance . The record is a dance-club reaction to societal restrictions, a salute to self-assurance and a funky homage to Black and queer musical pioneers.

“Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world,” Beyoncé had messaged her fans hours before the release of an album created during a pandemic.

So, just as the bubonic plague resulted in the Renaissance, the COVID-19 disease brought us Renaissance and the Renaissance World Tour. History will judge who got the better end of the deal. Right now, though, it does not look good for the 16th-century people.

beyonce world tour toronto

Beyoncé kicked off the North American leg of her Renaissance World Tour at the Rogers Centre, debuting a new look for the first show in Toronto on July 8. Kevin Mazur/Supplied

The entertainment under a closed Rogers Centre’s roof began before the music even started, as costumed fans were a show onto themselves, decked out in Bey-inspired finery. Disco-cowboy was the pervasive look, with elaborate hats, the occasional buttless chaps, and the glitter of a thousand Liberaces. One imagines whole sequin mines were exhausted just for one night out.

The star attraction did not disappoint sartorially, appearing first in a chain-mail mini and glassy high heels for an introductory segment dedicated to older hit ballads presented simply. The nostalgic set began with Dangerously in Love , from the singer’s formative years with the trio Destiny’s Child.

“How y’all doing?” the 41-year-old Houston native then asked. “It’s because of your loyalty and your love that I’m standing here right now.” Love, loyalty and purchased tickets that began at $358 are what brought Beyoncé to stage. The some 40,000 fans got their money’s worth, though – the cost of this eye-popping show must be extraordinary.

The prelim continued with 2007′s Flaws and All , an elegant number seemingly built for a James Bond film. Air fans were situated strategically, breezing hip-length blonde hair at every turn. The late Tina Turner was saluted with a stately, respectful bit of River Deep, Mountain High . For 1+1 , Beyoncé sat atop a mirrored grand piano, her legs crossed. The emotive oversinging is to many people’s taste.

The main show that followed was a conceptual, supercharged event of costume changes, joyous boogie, elaborate choreography, more than one horse, robots, chrome-plated eye candy and fantastic video imagery, with emphasis given to Beyoncé's platinum-selling record of a year ago.

“Welcome to the Renaissance,” she purred, outfitted futuristically like a titanium Barbarella in hot pants and thigh-high footwear. The screen behind her was a city block wide. A catwalk from the main stage led to a smaller stage into the crowd. An elite band included a horn section; there were more dancers than a Soul Train reunion; a disco ball was so giant it probably had its own gravitational pull.

“I’m swaggy, effortlessly,” Beyoncé sang on Cozy , showing off an excellent sense of self-awareness.

The maximalist presentation was broken into a series of lyrical and aesthetic themes, such as renaissance, motherboard, opulence and mind control. The “motherboard” segment was preceded with a message flashed on-screen: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” (Beyoncé's hot-pink dress left little to the imagination.)

The set closed with Break My Soul , a dance floor-filling vamp that hit harder than the $18 price for a big can of beer at the concession stands.

For the “opulence” songs – including Diva , Run the World (Girls) and Black Parade – the singer sat atop a metallic battle-field vehicle and donned a militaristic onesie with jacket and boots to match. Most people wear camouflage to blend in; Beyoncé is not most people.

Elsewhere she reclined luxuriously inside a shell – is glam-clam a thing? – and rocked a nude bodysuit with embroidered, strategically placed hands. The “mind control” songs, including America Has a Problem , were presented in a news-desk setting. Beyoncé's black-and-yellow bee suit had the crowd buzzing.

Overall, her voice was in honeyed and indefatigable mezzo-soprano form. She worked in near constant motion, with the esprit of Josephine Baker, the sparkled fluidity of champagne and the confidence of a superpower. She slipped up just once, dropping her sunglasses (during, of all songs, Diva ). Something to work on.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance: Setting New Records in the World of Tours

The queen b's tour earnings skyrocket, surpassing previous legends.

Beyoncé'S Renaissance: Setting New Records In The World Of Tours 1

Beyoncé , the global music icon, continues to set the stage on fire with her ongoing “Renaissance World Tour.” The tour, which has been the talk of the town since its inception, has now achieved a monumental milestone. With only half the tour completed, Beyoncé’s performances have already raked in a staggering $296 million, making it the highest-grossing tour by a black artist in history.

The “Brown Skin Girl” singer ’s tour has been a sensation, especially in Europe. Having graced cities like Barcelona, Stockholm, Paris, Amsterdam, and London, where she performed for five consecutive nights at Tottenham Stadium, Beyoncé’s charisma and unparalleled stage presence have drawn fans from all corners of the globe. After her 33rd show, the tour’s earnings have surpassed legends like Tina Turner and Michael Jackson, whose tours had earnings of $130 million and $165 million, respectively.

But the accolades don’t stop there. Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour has not only broken records in terms of earnings but also in attendance. The European leg of the tour saw over a million tickets sold, marking the first time any of Beyoncé’s solo tours have achieved this feat. In several European cities, she set new records, including the highest gross in London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Warsaw’s PGE Narodowy.

The tour’s success is also evident in the lengths Beyoncé goes to ensure her fans have the best experience. For instance, after a concert at FedEx Field Stadium in Washington DC faced a two-hour delay due to heavy rain, Beyoncé reportedly spent $100,000 to ensure trains ran extra hours so fans could get home safely.

As the Renaissance World Tour continues its North American leg, starting in Toronto, expectations are high. If the current momentum continues, the tour might gross over $264 million from the North American leg alone, potentially making it the biggest of Beyoncé’s career.

The world watches in anticipation as Beyoncé continues to redefine success in the music industry, proving once again why she’s considered music royalty. With her unmatched talent and dedication, the Queen B continues to inspire and set unparalleled standards in the world of music and performance.

Beyoncé tour 2023 at MetLife Stadium: Will Jay-Z or Cardi B be musical guests?

3-minute read.

beyonce world tour toronto

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford is the place to Bey this weekend.

“I didn’t get a chance to see Michael Jackson ... I didn’t get a chance to see James Brown. I didn’t get a chance to see Tina Turner, but I got a chance to see Beyoncé tonight,” said R&B chanteuse Jill Scott after Beyoncé's July 23 show at Soldier Field in Chicago. “Oh my God y’all. Phenomenal is an understatement. That vocal ability, the charisma, the honesty, sincerity onstage. I don’t have the …. I’m touched.”

It's Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour , and shows take place Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, at MetLife. The concert is about 2½ hours long, split into six segments with more than 30 songs. Bey's latest album, “Renaissance,” is performed, as well as tracks from throughout her career and a few choice covers — including “I'm Going Down” by Rose Royce and “Before I Let Go” by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.

The covers are a nod to the musical forebearers, and the staging is a futuristic tableau of Black pride ascendency, a celebration of Black queer music culture and Boss Girls positivity, according to reviewers.

Nobody's breaking Beyoncé's soul during this Renaissance.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Beyoncé uttered “the words that her mostly female, significantly queer, impressively diverse, sequin-clad and bedazzled cowboy hat-wearing audience longed to hear: 'I love you, Philadelphia,' " wrote Dan Deluca in the Philadelphia Inquirer after her July 12 show.

Better get out those cowboy hats, MetLife. There have been celebs aplenty in the audiences of tour shows, including Paul McCartney, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, Kelly Rowland from Destiny's Child and many more, according to Billboard.

More: When the stars, including Beyoncé, want a hit record, they call Allen George of Englewood

There have not been many guests on stage so far — unless you count 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter joining mom in the Beyhive Pit for several shows.

We have a feeling that if there's going to be any guest stars on stage for the Renaissance World Tour, it's going to happen at MetLife. After all, the intersection of Routes 3 and 120 in East Rutherford is the center of the world in the concert industry.

Here are six possibilities for guest turns at MetLife. Some are kind of obvious, others not so much.

Beyoncé's husband is a hometown hero from Brooklyn with a strong Jersey connection. Shawn Carter used to hustle in Trenton, where he attended Trenton Central High School. Jay-Z and Beyoncé co-headlined MetLife in 2018 for their On the Run II Tour.

Cardi B lives in Tenafly with her husband Offset and their kid Kulture. They're regulars at the American Dream entertainment and retail center, so they know their way around the Meadowlands. Cardi B and Beyoncé have had a friendly relationship over the years — Cardi appeared in a vid for the “Renaissance” single, “Break My Soul.” A Cardi B appearance at MetLife would solidify the union.

“My Power,” the 2019 single from “The Lion King” soundtrack, is performed on the tour — and co-songwriter Nija Charles is a Jersey girl from the Vauxhall section of Union Township. Charles has written hits for Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, H.E.R., Maroon 5 and more, but a little hometown shine would sparkle into the night.

Fivio Foreign

Fivio Foreign, who headlined the 2022 Hot 97 Summer Jam at MetLife, sampled the Destiny’s Child’s hit “Say My Name” on his 2022 “What's My Name” single. The sample led to a collaboration of sorts between Fivio and Bey after the Queen told him to clean up the lyrics.

“She had to hear it,” said Fivio on Hot 97, according to thefader.com. “She heard it. It was a little vulgar, a little bit for her, at first. ... I cleaned it up a lot. It was like, ‘You can’t be talking about girls like that!' ”

This one is likely to happen. Blue Ivy Carter, the 11-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, made her Renaissance World Tour stage debut on May 26 in Paris as part of the “My Power” dance ensemble. She's a hit. TikTok users are miming her moves, and even Lizzo did the Blue Ivy. She's not been on stage at every show, but a MetLife appearance would be a natural as Blue Ivy was born in New York City.

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers, the new quarterback for the New York Jets, is a big music fan who attended the recent Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran concerts at MetLife. We're not sure if Rodgers is musically talented, but he does have his own record label, Suspended Sunrise Recordings. If Rogers attends the show, and if Bey invites him on stage, you can bet the HBO “Hard Knocks” cameras will be there to record all the action.

Go : Beyonce, 7 p.m. Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, MetLife Stadium, One MetLife Stadium Drive, East Rutherford, resale tickets start at $320; metlifestadium.com , ticketmaster.com .

It's a unique concert experience that begins with a real-life rainbow over the concert venue and ends with the star of the show riding a silver horse in the air over the sold-out crowd.

So it was Saturday, July 29, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford for the Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour show, named "Renaissance" after Bey's most recent album. There was dancing, ballads, futuristic robots, throwback house music, alien superstars, Beyoncé on a half-shell, Beyoncé on an armored personnel carrier, a dystopian American news broadcast, Vogueing and more.

The concepts and musical stylings came fast and furious in six segments, but it never seemed disjointed or lacking cohesion. The evening was a manifestation of an artistically vibrant mind.

The show started as many concerts do. Beyoncé, in a gown, singing ballads. Bey's voice used to be criticized early in her career, but here was a master class, with scatting, cooing and extended running notes on "1+1" and "I'm Going Down," backed by a live band.

It was blast-off after that. The "Renaissance" segment featured Beyoncé resembling the robot Maria from "Metropolis." The field-spanning video screen enhanced the scene, and themes of free will, artistic and sexual liberty, fertility, and gaming the groove were explored.

Female empowerment, too, and Beyoncé had a little help with that aspect at MetLife from daughter Blue Ivy Carter. She came on in formation during "My Power" with a fist bump from mom and a shy smile and heart signal to the crowd, who cheered and screamed. Blue Ivy, whose dad is Jay-Z, is 11.

Did we mention Beyoncé changed her costume a few times? From bodysuits to pink boots to silver cowboy hats to sparkly lamé, Bey’s clothes got a workout.

Speaking about clothes, the Beyoncé audience really brought it. There were short shorts, shorter shorts, silver mesh tops on both guys and girls, cowboy hats, silver tassels and hand fans. The vibe was less-is-more.

The night wasn't all escapist fantasy. Beyoncé, to borrow the words of the late Rep. John Lewis, likes to stir a little "good trouble." Case in point, two songs near the end of the show set a disquieting tone. "America Has a Problem,” which featured Beyoncé as a newscaster dressed like a bee, is a desire song with an ominous tone, and "Pure/Honey" is partly about stark objectification.

Beyoncé is a multi-layered star who likes to challenge her audience.

On Friday, July 28, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declared Beyoncé the “Queen Honey Bey of the Garden State” in a video posted to social media.

“Hey, New Jersey, did you know Beyoncé is performing at MetLife Stadium?” said Murphy in the video. “No, it’s not deja vu, the Queen Bey herself will actually be coming to New Jersey. In honor of her two performances this weekend, I have officially proclaimed Beyoncé the Queen Bey of the Garden State.”

Murphy then proceeded to name-drop some of her hits while wrapping up the proclamation.

“Queen Bey — New Jersey would have a problem if you didn’t perform at MetLife for for your Renaissance tour,” Murphy said. “Your New Jersey BeyHive will always be crazy in love with you. We are all heated to know we will be living cozy in your presence this weekend.”

Murphy delivered a similar proclamation on the eve of Taylor Swift's concerts in May at MetLife, declaring “Taylor Swift ham, egg and cheese” as the official state sandwich.

Beyoncé's Beygood charity foundation donated $100,000 to New York city-area businesses, it was announced before the show. The group focuses on economic equity by supporting marginalized and under-resourced programs and businesses.

Beyoncé returns to MetLife on Sunday, July 30.
