boat trips brighton

We’ve exciting  one hour excursions,  two hour boat trips for those wanting to go a little further afield and unique  private skippered charters  if looking to rent the boat privately for your family and friends.

Why not take a quick look at the video below for a taste of what to expect on a trip along to the Seven Sisters, admittedly with a beautiful sunset cruise thrown in for good measure?

boat trips brighton

From our base in the busy Port of Newhaven nestled between Brighton and Eastbourne on the South Coast, we’ll show you the famous white cliffs of the Seven Sisters from a totally different perspective. The picturesque Coastguard Cottages at Cuckmere. Birling Gap managed by the National Trust. The distinctive red and white stripes of the Beachy Head Lighthouse and so much more.

If you’ve a little more time to spend with us, come and see the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm and keep an eye open for its pod of dolphins often spotted there throughout the summer months. Witness the turbines close-up and learn about the sustainable energy generated by the only wind farm along the South Coast.

Alternatively, why not explore the sights and sounds of Brighton ’s Palace and West Piers? The bustling beaches. Roedean. Saltdean. The Blind Veterans at Ovingdean.

For the ultimate experience, end the day with a magical sunset cruise as we watch the setting sun sink effortlessly beneath the sea.

Seven Sisters from Hope Gap.

The Seven Sisters rival even the White Cliffs of Dover for ivory clarity. The constant crashing of the ocean waves at their base is causing them to fall piece-by-piece back into the ocean.

The cliffs are known as the Seven Sisters due to the seven distinct hilltops that comprise their silhouette. The bright white colour of the stone is thanks to the abundance of chalk that makes up the majority of the cliff face.

Experience our view along the Sussex Heritage Coast from Seaford Bay to Beachy Head. This is by far our most popular boat trip and lasts approximately one hour .

FIND OUT MORE

boat trips brighton

The Rampion Offshore Wind Farm is currently the only offshore wind farm along the South Coast of England. It produces the equivalent amount of electricity to power half of the homes in Sussex each year.

The wind farm is located southwest of our home here in Newhaven and stretches from Brighton in the east to Worthing in the west. We’ll head out to the turbines to get up close and personal before returning via Brighton and back along the cliffs of Telescombe and Peacehaven.

It isn’t out of the question that we’ll spot dolphins en route. Their sightings are well documented locally. It’s extremely rare but if we’re going to see them anywhere then it’s likely to be on this boat trip lasting approximately two hours.

Sunset on Seaford beach.

Being less than 90 minute’s train ride away from London, Newhaven a wonderful location from which to explore the South Coast and have a fantastic experience out on the water.

Why not spend a few hours on the nearby beach in Seaford Bay before joining us on what will surely be a trip of a lifetime to round off a beautiful day? Our sunset cruise leaves each evening (weather permitting) so as to witness the setting of the sun into the calming seas. Unbroken vistas to the west provide a truly magical evening for all of the family and couples alike.

For those of you looking for the ultimate gift for a loved one, the boat can be chartered privately and chilled champagne served onboard. Simply book an hour’s long Private Skippered Charter in the evening and we’ll organise the rest.

boat trips brighton

The ultimate experience each August.  Witness the Eastbourne Airshow from out at sea.  The best possible location for the show.  An uninterrupted, 360 degree panorama from as close to the flight path as is physically possible.

We run one trip each day throughout the show.  Each will be three hours in duration with the aim of seeing the Red Arrows on every trip . Not only will you get the best seat in the house but you’ll also witness the wonders of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head whilst en route. An amazing spectacle from start to finish. We can’t wait to share the experience with you…!

Skippered charter.

Looking for something a little different? Why not organise a Private Skippered Charter with us?

Skippered charters allow us to offer a bespoke adventure for you. If you’ve a birthday surprise to organise, a special family occasion or simply want to treat yourself to something extraordinary then look no further.

Skippered charters are available by the hour, half day or even whole days if there’s somewhere in particular you’d like to visit. Maybe you’d simply like the freedom to go wherever you like, anchoring off Seaford Beach or Cuckmere Haven for a swim. Visiting Brighton Marina for lunch. The possibilities are endless.

You get the peace of mind that you’re in safe hands with a professional helm in charge. Their knowledge of the area is superb and they’ll be able to offer guidance as to where would be best to go on the day if you’ve no fixed plans.

All you have to do is reserve your date and time via our booking platform and leave the rest to us. Alternatively, get in touch via our contacts page  and we’ll put everything into place for you.

The south coast’s first offshore wind farm

The Rampion Offshore Wind Farm comprises 116 wind turbines that each sit on top of a foundation fixed into the seabed.

With an installed capacity of 400 megawatts (MW), it will generate 1,400 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green power each year, equal to the amount used annually by around 350,000 UK homes 1 , or almost half the houses in Sussex. It will reduce CO 2  emissions by nearly 600,000 tonnes a year.

The wind farm site covers 70 square kilometres, so it is larger than the island of Guernsey, and is located in the English Channel between 13 and 20 kilometres off the Sussex coast.

When completed in 2018, it created around 60 full-time permanent jobs. Rampion will be operated and maintained from a purpose-built base at Newhaven Port, and is already acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of the port area.

Offshore components

Rampion features 116 MHI Vestas 3.45 MW turbines. The turbines are made up of an 80 metre (m) tall tower, a nacelle for the generation equipment, a hub, and three 55m long blades. When vertical, the tip of the turbine blade reaches 140m, which is just taller than the Brighton i360’s viewing pod at its top height.

The turbines sit on top of foundations, comprising single steel monopiles and bright yellow transition pieces, designed so they integrate together perfectly. There are 12 rows of 10 to 12 turbines that are connected by array cables taking the power to a single offshore substation. A total of 140 kilometres of array cables are buried in a network under the seabed. Laid end to end, the array cables would stretch from Brighton to London and back.

The wind turbines generate power at 33 kilovolts (kV) and the main role of the offshore substation is to transform this up to 150kV, to reduce any losses as it is transmitted to shore. The 2,000 tonne structure houses the electrical components at the heart of the wind farm including transformers, switchgear and control systems. It sits on a four-leg jacket foundation, fixed into the seabed and weighing around 900 tonnes.

Electricity will be transmitted from the offshore substation along two 16km subsea export cables, which come to shore at the beach, next to Brooklands Pleasure Park in East Worthing.

Rampion name

The Rampion name was entered into a schools’ naming competition by Davison High School for Girls, and went on to win the public vote. The logo is a stylised version of the Rampion flower, the county flower of Sussex (below), and uses blue and purple hues in its colour.

Onshore cable and substation

From landfall, 27km of buried onshore cables will transport the power to a new onshore substation in Twineham, Mid Sussex. The cables have been installed in ducts laid in trenches that were backfilled prior to the cables being pulled through. A technique called horizontal directional drilling was used at four landmarks along the route – under the A27, the River Adur, railway line and, the A259 and Lancing Beach. By drilling under each of these, traffic and trains were not interrupted, the beach could remain open and environmental impact to the River Adur was minimised.

At the new substation, the electricity will be transformed from 150kV to 400kV and then transmitted to the existing National Grid substation. From here it will enter the national grid for use by homes, businesses and the wider community.

Construction time frame

Construction of the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm began in 2015 and is due to be fully operational in 2018, with the final completion date being largely dependent on logistics and weather during the construction period. Reinstatement of the onshore cable route will be monitored for 10 years and the wind farm itself will have a lifespan of 20 to 25 years.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

boat trips brighton

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

boat trips brighton

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

boat trips brighton

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

boat trips brighton

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

boat trips brighton

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

boat trips brighton

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

boat trips brighton

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

‘Smiling’ great white sharks photographed near Santa Cruz beaches

S ANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) — A local marine wildlife photographer captured images of young great white sharks who appear to be “smiling” as they swim close to Santa Cruz County beaches.

The underwater photographs, shot by Eric Mailander this June, look like something you’d see with the “Baby Shark” song playing in the background. More than 20 juvenile great whites were swimming near New Brighton State Beach.

“We have all seen the aerial views of the dark shark shadows close to shore,” Mailander said in reference to drone images. The underwater photographs show how “cute” great white sharks are up close, he said.

“It looks like they are smiling. I wanted to show what they look like under the water,” Mailander told KRON4.

An area of water near New Brighton is nicknamed “Shark Park,” where young great white sharks appear annually. Mailander helps scientists with the Monterey Bay Aquarium track populations off the coast of the Central California.

Last week he launched his small boat and lowered a long pole with a GoPro camera attached into the water to document the sharks’ dorsal fin identification numbers. Curious juvenile sharks swam straight toward the GoPro to investigate the strange object, the photographer said.

The largest migrating sharks — some up to 16-feet-long– migrate into the Monterey Bay in October, also known as “Sharktober.” When chilly ocean water temperatures rise in June, 7-foot-long juvenile sharks swim into the bay to warm up.

“When the water temperatures dip below 60 degrees, you don’t see any sharks. When it spikes, like right now, the juvenile white sharks (appear),” Mailander said.

Fortunately for boogie-boarders, swimmers, and surfers, there have not been any reported incidents in recent years of the juveniles behaving aggressively toward people around Shark Park. “They are not bothering anybody,” Mailander said.

The photographer and other longtime shark observers counted up to 40 sharks near New Brighton State Beach in a single day. “This year has been phenomenal, best year since 2015,” the photographer said. “Shark Park is a great area to learn because it’s a natural habitat.”

Mailander and Monterey Bay Aquarium scientists published some of their population research findings in a 2021 study, “ North Pacific warming shifts the juvenile range of a marine apex predator .” The study found a dramatic increase in white sharks in the Monterey Bay, overwhelmingly comprised of juveniles, from 2014 to 2019.

The study states, “Even though white sharks are endothermic, greater surface-to-volume ratios in these juveniles may challenge their thermal inertia and ability to thermoregulate especially at the cold limit of their thermal habitat. As a result, the thermal range of juvenile white sharks is likely a major driver of the habitats they occupy, and this appears to be sensitive to climatic shifts.”

Congolese President visits Moscow in bid to deepen ties

boat trips brighton

By Africanews

Republic of the Congo

The trip by Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso comes less than a month after Russia's foreign affairs minister Sergei Lavrov made a stop in the central African country.

Sassou Nguesso is expected to meet with his Russian counterpart Vladmir Putin.

The two leaders will hold discussions on the economy, trade, energy as well as security cooperation.

This is Sassou Nguesso's second trip to Russia in less than a year. Last July, he traveled to Saint Petersburg to attend the Russia-Africa summit.

Brazaville is one of Moscow's staunchest allies in Africa. Russian companies maintain a presence in the country's oil, mining and military sector.

Russia has worked to bolster ties with African countries in a bid to counter western sanctions and isolation over the war in Ukraine.

Most African nations have adopted a neutral stance on the conflict, calling instead for a ceasefire and peace talks.

Ukraine war latest: US warned of 'dangerous illusions' by diplomat as Russia mulls change in nuclear stance

The Ukrainian air force has said it shot down all 23 drones and five out of six missiles launched by Russia this morning.

Serhii Tiurin, the regional governor of Khmelnytskyi, western Ukraine, said the air defences shot down nine aerial targets over his region.

Local authorities have not received any reports of casualties or property damage, he added.

Meanwhile, governor Vitaliy Kim said the military destroyed six drones and three cruise missiles over the southern region of Mykolaiv.

Ukraine and Russia often send drones across the border but both sides have said they only target military infrastructure.

A senior Russian diplomat has urged the US to pay attention to discussions under way on possibly altering Moscow's nuclear doctrine to suit changed conditions in international relations.

Deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov, interviewed by the Izvestia media outlet, also said Moscow did not rule out downgrading diplomatic relations with certain Western countries if they failed to alter their "Russophobic" approach to ties.

Mr Ryabkov restated Vladimir Putin's assertions of recent weeks that Russia's nuclear doctrine, setting down when such weapons could be used, was being reassessed.

He said that the doctrine was drafted "in a different era and in different circumstances" and that he hoped the discussions now "are being taken seriously by our opponents".

"I am not anticipating the outcome, but I urge our adversaries to think about what the president is saying," he said.

"They are literally playing with fire... and must learn not to indulge in dangerous illusions, but to try to look at the world soberly and understand that we have immutable national interests which we are prepared to defend to the end," he said.

The doctrine states Russia may use nuclear weapons in response to a nuclear attack or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to Russia.

Mr Putin said this month that Russia had no need to use nuclear arms to secure victory in Ukraine.

The Russian navy missile cruiser Varyag has carried out drills in the Mediterranean Sea, the state-owned TASS news agency reports.

The drills focused on repelling a mass sea drone attack, the navy command said, and also involved simulated engagements with an enemy vessel and a submarine.

The drill come weeks after a Russian naval frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine conducted missile drills in the Atlantic Ocean while on their way to Cuba.

Such moves will be closely watched by the US.

Welcome back to our coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Yesterday, NATO appointed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as its next secretary general.

And Russian pranksters released footage of David Cameron being tricked into thinking he was speaking to a former Ukrainian president.

The Foreign Office (FCDO) announced at the start of June that a "number of text messages were exchanged followed by a brief video call" between Lord Cameron and someone who claimed to be Petro Poroshenko.

In the casual video call published by website Guido Fawkes, Lord Cameron discusses Labour, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Here is what else has happened in the last 24 hours:

  • Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder said if North Korean troops were sent to Ukraine to help the Russian army they would become "cannon fodder";
  • Evan Gershkovich was seen before the start of his behind-closed-doors trial in Russia;
  • Vladimir Putin held a phone call with the interim president of Iran, Mohammad Mokhber;
  • European Union countries agreed a sanctions package against Belarus.

The map below shows the latest territorial picture in Ukraine...

That brings an end to our live updates on the conflict in Ukraine for this evening.

We'll bring you any major updates overnight. In the meantime, you can scroll through the blog below to catch up on the day's developments.

Vladimir Putin today held a phone call with the interim president of Iran, Mohammad Mokhber, the Kremlin has said.

The Russian president and Mokhber discussed "mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation in all key areas", including energy and "large-scale infrastructure projects".

Russian energy giant Gazprom announced earlier today the signing of a memorandum with the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) to supply Russian pipeline gas to Iran.

As many football fans will be aware, the Ukrainian men's national team have been playing against Belgium in a crucial match in the European Championship in Germany.

Soldiers in the Donetsk region have been taking a break from the conflict there to watch the match in Stuttgart - where Belgium supporters rose to applaud as the Ukrainian national anthem was played before kick off.

Ukraine must win the game or hope there is a winner in the match being played simultaneously between Romania and Slovakia (or a win for Slovakia if Ukraine lose) if they are to qualify for the knock-out stages of the tournament.

The United Nations Security Council has condemned a deadly attack that targeted churches and synagogues in Dagestan.

Twenty people were killed, most of them police officers, during the attack on Sunday.

Five gunmen were also killed, while at least 46 people were taken to hospital with injuries in the predominantly Muslim region.

The statement from the UN Security Council said: "The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist."

Russian pranksters have released footage of David Cameron being tricked into thinking he was speaking to a former Ukrainian president.

In the casual video call published by website Guido Fawkes, Lord Cameron discusses Labour, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine with someone purporting to be Petro Poroshenko.

Mr Poroshenko was Ukrainian president between 2014 and 2019, and has remained a prominent figure in the country since leaving office.

Earlier this month, the UK Government made the hoax call public knowledge to stave off any attempts to manipulate video footage of the former prime minister from the communications.

Asked by the imposter if he believes anything will change after the general election, Lord Cameron says Labour has been "as enthusiastic" in their support for Ukraine as the Conservatives.

He said: "I don't think you'll see change. Obviously if they win it will be a new government, there will be some getting up to speed on some issues, but I think fundamentally they've supported everything we've done.

"I think the Labour Party, if they win, will continue that approach."

Asked about his engagement with former US president and current presidential candidate Mr Trump, Lord Cameron says the Republican would want to "back the winning side" in Ukraine but his attitude is "hard to predict".

He says: "I had dinner with (Trump) and my aim was to convince him not to block money for Ukraine, because obviously the speaker, Mike Johnson, wanted two things: he wanted to vote the money for Ukraine but he also wanted to keep his job, and I thought it was important to try to make sure that Trump backed him sufficiently to do that, which is what happened in the end."

He adds: "I think ultimately (Trump) will calculate at the time what's right for him.

"I think the key thing is if we can make sure that Ukraine is on the front foot and Putin is on the back foot by November, then he will want to support the winning side, as it were, and that's what we've got to ensure.

"It's hard to predict exactly what his attitude will be but that's the most important thing."

Elsewhere in the video, the imposter can be heard saying that not sending Ukraine an invitation to Nato is a "bad signal".

In response, Lord Cameron says: "There's not going to be an invitation because America won't support one.

"So what I've said to the president, (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy, is: let's try and get the best language we can about Nato support for Ukraine. But don't, let's not, we mustn't have an argument between Nato and Ukraine before the summit."

Later in the video, Lord Cameron discloses a conversation he had with Kazakhstan's foreign secretary Murat Nurtleu during a visit to the country earlier this year.

Lord Cameron says: "Kazakhstan are convinced that Putin wants a slice of the north of Kazakhstan.

"(Nurtleu) said Ukrainians are dying for Kazakhstan, they are putting their lives at risk to hold back  Russia  and that benefits us."

At the end of the call, the imposter says: "Thank you, my friend. It was nice to see you again, and I remember our first meeting with Lord Hague and Bernard and Lily Vie."

The FCDO said it had released details of the exchange publicly over dears it could be "manipulated".

The call was carried out by Russian pranksters who use the aliases "Vovan and Lexus" and appears to have lasted around 15 minutes.

The duo are well-known in Russia and have claimed to have duped a string of politicians and celebrities in the past including Sir Elton John, US statesman John McCain, Prince Harry and JK Rowling.

The Foreign Office said today that the call looked like a Russian information operation designed to distract attention from Moscow's war in Ukraine.

A spokesperson for Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement: "We made public the fact that this call happened weeks ago, to do the right thing and make sure others were warned of the risk at the earliest opportunity.

"The Foreign Secretary understood this was a private call with a Ukrainian politician.

"This is clearly Russian, and is standard practice for information operations. Disinformation is a tactic straight from the Kremlin playbook to try to distract from their illegal activities in Ukraine and the human rights abuses being committed there."

It did not answer a question about the video's authenticity, which Sky News has not independently verified.

The US is reportedly moving towards lifting a ban on American military contractors deploying to Ukraine, according to a group of US officials familiar with the matter.

The US is said to be looking for ways to speed up the maintenance and repairs of Ukraine's weapons systems.

The equipment that has sustained significant damage in combat currently has to be transported out of the country to Poland, Romania, or other NATO countries for repairs, which takes time.

US troops are also available to help with maintenance and logistics, though this is only from afar via video chat or secure phone.

One advanced system that officials say will likely require regular maintenance is the F-16 fighter jet, which Ukraine is set to receive later this year.

The policy is still being drafted by US officials and has not yet received final sign-off from President Joe Biden, officials said.

"We have not made any decisions and any discussion of this is premature," one administration official told CNN.

"The president is absolutely firm that he will not be sending US troops to Ukraine."

The White House has been determined since the war began in 2022 to limit both the danger to Americans and the perception that the US military is engaged in combat there.

The US state department has also warned Americans against travelling to Ukraine since 2022.
