9 apps you need for living in Boston

Boston can be tough to navigate for college freshmen down to the most seasoned Southie native, but these apps can help.

boston travel app

Boston can be tough to navigate for anyone, whether it's a college freshmen or the most seasoned Southie native. Thankfully, questions like, “What’s the quickest way to get from the North End to the Seaport?” to, “Where’s the nearest cup of coffee?” can often be answered with the help of an app.

With dozens of transit, exercise, and food-related apps to pick from, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.  We’ve rounded up the following apps to take out some of the guesswork and help you take advantage of this great city.

For getting where you need to go:

Android, iPhone

What it does: Citymapper tracks subways, buses, and trains using real-time data, providing multiple route options and estimated travel times. It also proposes fare estimates for taxis and Uber, in addition to giving bike counts at nearby Hubway kiosks. If you’d rather walk or take a bike, Citymapper even shows how many calories you stand to burn.

For avoiding a parking ticket:

What it does: Leave your quarters at home. ParkBoston lets drivers pay for metered parking for up to two hours by entering their credit card information, license plate number, and the zone number displayed on the ParkBoston street sign that identifies where they’re parked. Shopping on Newbury Street? The app also notifies you 10 minutes before your meter expires, letting you extend the time limit without rushing back to your car. ParkBoston is currently available in the Back Bay area, but the program will soon expand to other neighborhoods.

For when you inevitably get a parking ticket:

Boston PayTix

What it does: If you own a car in Boston, you’re going to get a parking ticket at some point. Think of it as a right of passage. Rather than mail a check into City Hall, Boston PayTix lets you immediately pay your parking ticket by entering (or scanning) your ticket number and billing information. You can also look up any unpaid tickets you might have forgotten.

For when you’re hungry:

Street Food App

What it does: There’s no better way to bond with co-workers then heading to the nearest food truck for lunch. But will your street be serving up Chicken & Rice Guys or Roxy’s Grilled Cheese? Street Food App gives up-to-the-minute locations for dozens of food trucks in Boston, in addition to providing truck schedules for the following week. The app also tells you which trucks take cash and credit, and gives users a brief description of the type of cuisine offered.

Eventbrite

For finding something to do this weekend:

What it does: Eventbrite shows you tons of cool events happening in Boston each month and tells you how much it will cost to go to them. If you find an event you want to attend, Eventbrite lets you purchase tickets with your phone. When it comes time to attend the beerfest, half marathon, or Great Gatsby-inspired party, just show your ticket on your phone to get in.

Dunkin Donuts Boston Apps

For your caffeine fix:

New Dunkin’ Donuts

What it does: Dunkin’ Donuts coffee reigns supreme in Boston, and the company’s latest application lets users pay right from the app with a virtual DD card that can be reloaded at any time. New Dunkin’ Donuts also shows the nearest Dunks’ locations and provides menu and nutrition information. The best part of the app is it helps you rack up DD Perks points, which quickly translate into free beverages and donuts. If you’re a regular, the app even has on-the-go ordering that lets you order up to 24 hours in advance and skip the line in the morning rush.

Runkeeper Boston Apps

For your fitness needs:

What it does: As one of the fittest cities in the nation, Boston is known for its bevy of runners that can be seen skirting the Charles River or Castle Island come rain or shine. Runkeeper helps you join them. The Boston-based app tracks running, walking, hiking, or cycling routes and shows training progress in real-time. This includes your distance, time, pace, and calories burned, as well as the path traveled on the map. Besides your daily routine, Runkeeper also lets you set long-term goals like a weight or pace. The best part of the app is that you can create running groups or join challenges to stay motivated.

For getting a pothole fixed:

What it does: Have a broken street sign or unwanted graffiti on your street? BOS: 311 lets users report non-emergency service issues to the city via text or photo and check on the status of those requests. The app also shows requests submitted by other users so you can keep track of municipal trouble areas. Allston: we’re looking at you.

For when you missed the game:

New England Patriots

What it does: Even if you’re not a Boston native, someone’s going to try and talk to you about the Patriots, Tom Brady, or Deflategate at some point. The official app of the New England Patriots gives users access to the team’s schedule, live game commentary, and individual and team stats so you can at least pretend to know what’s going on.

Boston-area mass transit apps: 5 for helping navigate the T

These handy websites as well as applications through Google and Apple are best for navigating a system that can be full of delays

boston travel app

Navigating the Boston area’s buses, subways, trolleys, and commuter trains can be tricky. And, given the system’s chronic delays ( and the odd derailment ), it can be a real headache too. These five transit apps and websites—all available through a wifi connection on smartphones or through apps downloadable from Apple or Google—can help ease the pain.

Trip Planner . This is pretty much the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s official portal for navigating the T and commuter rail.

It allows users to plan trips hours, even days, in advance; and users can search for wheelchair accessibility and trips with the fewest transfers or the least amount of walking (“Best route” is the default search function). It can also warn of track work or other realities that might delay trips.

Track the T . Software engineer David Newton started this free website after relying on the 73 bus to get back and forth from his private-sector job in Cambridge. Buses would “bunch up three or four behind each other with the timetable mostly fictional,” he said over email. He seized on the MBTA’s 2009 decision to make its real-time bus information public, and developed this app.

It tracks subway, trolley, and bus arrivals to the real-time second. It is especially helpful for riders if they’re at a stop along multiple routes going in the same direction. Newton’s Track the T will tell them when the next bus or train is coming that’s going their way—even if it’s not the one they intended to take. It’s a lifesaver when time is tight.

Aira . In early May 2019, the MBTA announced a six-month test of this app, which aids low-vision and blind people in navigating the T. Aira uses smartphone cameras to guide users in real time through public spaces such as train and bus stations, according to the Boston Globe . Available through Google and Apple, Aira is free for the six-month trial, but monthly plans generally start at $24.

Transit App . The MBTA officially endorsed this free app back in 2016 . It basically mimics the agency’s own Trip Planner site via tapping into the MBTA’s real-time data for arrivals and departures.

Transit App will also list departure times for nearby transit, in case other modes are going toward the same place; and the app includes ride-hail and bike-share options too. Finally, if riders are worried about missing a stop, they can set up Transit App to ping them when the stop’s coming up. Bonus: Transit App works for dozens of other cities and regions.

ProximiT . This free app that Jeff Lopes developed is available only through Apple. It lists arrival and departure times of buses, subways, and trolleys in order of how close they are to a rider’s location and desired time of departure.

Basically, ProximiT is another way to draw real-time information for commutes. In that, it bills itself as a kind of personal assistant for commuters.

Boston Travel Guide

boston travel app

Boston is not only one of America's oldest cities, it's also one of the most walkable, and we'd even go as far as saying it's one of the easiest to explore. From the Italian roots of the North End to Boston's quintessential brick facades and New England charm, the city has historical and cultural fascination around every corner. First-time visitors wondering what to do in Boston will be thrilled to find that there is an activity to please every kind of traveler—Red Sox games for the sports fans, oysters shucked fresh at the Boston's best restaurants for the foodies, Freedom Trail walking tours for the history buffs, and public green spaces for relaxing in the summertime.

Boston is an intimate city, but its cultural breadth makes it feel like a much larger hub. You can feast on some of the country's best dim sum in Chinatown, then walk 15 minutes and be at a brewery by the water. You can go spend an afternoon at a world-renowned art museum and wind up at a Sox game that night, or start your day strolling the Harvard University campus and end the day taking in a concert at the legendary House of Blues.

Eastern Standard Time (Daylight Savings Time, seasonal. Dates vary)

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit Boston is from May to November. The late spring and summer months bring beautiful weather (temperatures reach nearly 70 by May and hover in the low 80s by July). Fall in Boston is picturesque, with Harvard University, MIT, and Boston University's campuses trimmed in foliage and temperatures slipping into the low 70s in September and low 60s in October.

Visiting in the late spring means catching the Bruins and Celtics close to the playoffs, but you'll want to avoid the graduation weeks in May if at all possible. The summer is lovely in Boston—it's not too hot, and while tourists flock to the city in June, July, and August, the student population clears out. Fall is by no means the off-season, with tourists continuing to arrive and students moving in, but visiting in September and October affords you some of the very best Boston weather. We'd recommend avoiding Boston travel from November to April, as these are the coldest, grayest months.

Things to Know

Boston Common is the oldest public park in the United States dating back to 1634.

Boston was the first U.S. city to build a subway line, the Tremont Street Subway built in 1897.

Another Boston first was Revere Beach, the first public beach in the country.

Boston baked beans, New England clam chowder, Boston cream pie, lobster rolls, and Fenway Franks are some of the foods associated with the city.

Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood is one of the city's oldest communities, named for the beacon that once warned locals about invasions. Today it's a protected historic district, and its classic homes can be admired on a self-guided walking tour .

The National Park Service manages several of Boston's popular tourist sites.

How to Get Around

Trains: Public transportation in Boston runs through Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), which offers two types of trains: the metro and the commuter rail. There are 13 commuter rail lines, all of which will take you out to various suburbs of the city. There is also a comprehensive metro—which Bostonians call "the T"—that runs throughout Boston and can easily bring you to most major attractions and neighborhoods in the city. The T has four lines—the red line, blue line, orange line, and green line—and is generally very easy to navigate. Find the subway map here .

You can purchase a CharlieCard , a reusable card to use on MBTA trains and buses.

Buses: The MBTA offers a vast number of city buses , all numbered and servicing different areas of the city. They also have Silver Line buses that go to Logan Airport from South Station.

Taxis: While taxis are not as abundant here as they are in, say, New York City, it's still simple to grab a cab at Logan Airport or at South Station (a central transportation hub where most buses and trains from other cities arrive). You can also, of course, call in advance for a taxi from a local cab company like Boston Cab Dispatch .

Car service: Uber and Lyft are available in Boston, as are black car services like Master Livery .

It's hard to find, in the shadows of Logan Airport, but it's where discussions about great pizza begin and end.

Tatte Bakery & Cafe

Address: Multiple locations Website

It's not often that a bakery starts from one's home and in 14 short years expands to 18 brick-and-mortar bakeries, including two in Washington, D.C.. Nor is it easy for a bakery to be gluten-free, but Tatte's does have a "gluten-friendly" menu that's a big hit. Catch the Bruins from October to April (or even May if they make the playoffs) and the Celtics on a similar timeline.

House of Blues

Address: 15 Lansdowne Street, Boston, MA 02215 Website

Certainly the most iconic music venue in Boston, the House of Blues on Lansdowne Street is where you can find A-list musical talent. You'll want to scour Ticketmaster in advance of your trip to see if there are any good shows when you're visiting.

Charles River Bike Path

There are ample biking and running trails in Boston, including the Minuteman Bikeway, which runs from Cambridge all the way to Bedford, Massachusetts, and Cambridge's Fresh Pond. But one of the best Boston paths is the 24-mile Charles River Bike Path, which runs along both the Boston and Cambridge sides of the river passing landmarks from Boston's Museum of Science to Watertown Square, just outside the city.

Trillium Brewing Company

Fancy an outdoor craft beer? Trillium Brewing Company has three prime locations in Boston, one in Fenway with indoor and outdoor space, one near the Seaport district which boasts a great restaurant, and a lively seasonal beer garden near the waterfront.

Best Shopping

Newberry street.

Neighborhoods to Know

Back Bay: Often regarded as the ritziest neighborhood in Boston, Back Bay is home to Newbury Street, Copley Square, and the Prudential Center. Come for the classic Boston attractions, stay for the luxury, brick-facade row houses.

Cambridge: Cambridge sits directly across from Boston, with the Charles River separating the two. Cambridge is, of course, home to Harvard University and MIT. Think of it this way: Boston is to Manhattan as Cambridge is to Brooklyn. Known for more than just the ivy leagues, visitors will love poking around Harvard Square during the day, grabbing a cup of coffee from the Peet's featured in Good Will Hunting and picking out a book at The Coop, and checking out the lively scene in Central Square at night.

South End: Tucked just beyond Back Bay and Fenway/Kenmore, the South End is known for its Victorian-style row houses. It's a low-key neighborhood with residential charm, but still offers local shopping and trendy eateries.

North End: The North End is right by the water, across from East Boston, and a short walk from Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. It's the hub of Italian culture in Boston—often called Boston's Little Italy—and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Boston, home to landmarks like Old North Church and Paul Revere's house.

Seaport: Southeast of downtown, nestled by the Boston waterfront is the chic yet laid-back Seaport neighborhood. The Seaport is a charming area to simply walk along the water and fantasize about living in the high-rises overlooking the harbor.

Fenway/Kenmore: In terms of hanging out in the Room Where It Happens, Fenway/Kenmore tends to be the heart of the action, especially during baseball season. Fenway/Kenmore is home to Fenway Park, the House of Blues, pub-lined Landsdowne Street, and a slew of great restaurants. It's also where you'll find the famous Boston Latin Academy, and is adjacent to the Back Bay and close to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.

Winter : Expect up to nine days of rain or snow in the winter months, and temperatures dipping into the low 30s. Generally, December to February is cold and snowy—with quite a bit of slush. Spring : You'll still get about eight days of rain per month in the spring, but temperatures will start to rise by April to the mid 50s, and by May can get up to the high 60s. Summer : If you like a warm breeze on summer evenings, you'll love Boston in June, July, and August, when temperatures are in the high 70s and low 80s. Summer is extremely pleasant (and mild compared to the Southeast), though it does get a bit humid. Fall : September temperatures can still be in the 70s during the day, but by October, you can feel dips into the 40s at night. Nonetheless, fall brings mild temperatures and lovely foliage.

The following are average Fahrenheit lows and highs by month. Average annual precipitation 21.14 inches.

January 23 - 37 February 24 - 38 March 31 - 45 April 41 - 56 May 50 - 66 June 59 - 76 July 66 - 82 August 65 - 80 September 58 - 73 October 47 - 62 November 38 - 52 December 29 - 42

Logan Airport travel tips

To reduce traffic congestion during tunnel closures, MassDOT encourages those traveling to or from Logan Airport to leave their cars at home and explore Massport's list of transportation options to and from Logan, which include: the Blue Line or Silver Line , the Logan Express , the Logan Water Taxi , or the Hingham/Hull Ferry .

Vehicles leaving Logan Airport should be aware of ongoing traffic impacts during the Sumner Tunnel closures. Periodically, Massport will close the ramp connecting the airport to the Ted Williams Tunnel and re-direct traffic to minimize the backup on the mainline of I-90. Additionally, vehicles traveling on Route 1A/I-90 westbound towards Ted Williams Tunnel may see one less through lane on I-90 westbound. During some peak traffic periods, one lane is converted to a merge lane to help vehicles leaving Logan Airport to freely join the I-90 mainline. While these changes do not eliminate congestion, they are implemented in an effort to balance traffic volumes during closures of the Sumner Tunnel and provide safer driving conditions inside the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Detour options

In coordination with local agencies and emergency services, the following detours were determined as the most efficient options to divert traffic away from the Sumner Tunnel while it is closed. When possible, it is highly encouraged to utilize public transit options.

Drivers from East Boston seeking to reach the Downtown Boston area will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel via Bennington Street and onto I-93.

Cote d'Ivoire Travel Advisory

Travel advisory april 8, 2024, cote d ivoire - level 2: exercise increased caution.

Updated to reflect safety and security information on the Northern Border Region, and additional points for mariners who decide to travel to Côte d’Ivoire.

Exercise increased caution due to  crime, terrorism , civil unrest , health , and  piracy.   Some areas have increased risk.  Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Do Not Travel To:

  • Northern border region due to  terrorism .

Country Summary:   Crime continues to be a major public security concern in Côte d’Ivoire. Violent crime, such as carjacking, robbery, and home invasion, is common in some areas.  Local police often lack resources to respond to serious crimes.

Violent extremist activity occurs in Burkina Faso and Mali near the border with Côte d’Ivoire.  Terrorism concerns in the northern region remain due to its proximity to these countries.

Travelers should avoid demonstrations, protests, political rallies, and large crowds.  These events can become violent.  Demonstrators and security forces may clash suddenly.  Police may use tear gas or other force to break up crowds.

Piracy with armed robbery and kidnapping for ransom are significant threats to ships operating near Côte d’Ivoire.  U.S. citizens on ships in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of West Africa should be cautious.

Health care in rural areas is below U.S. standards.  There are often shortages of medicine and medical supplies in public and private health facilities.

The U.S. government is limited in its ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens outside Abidjan.  U.S. Embassy staff are not permitted to drive outside major cities at night.  Read the  country information page  for more information on travel to Côte d’Ivoire.

If you decide to travel to Côte d’Ivoire:

  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • Keep a low profile.

Northern Border Region – Level 4: Do Not Travel

The main terrorist threat to Côte d’Ivoire is from a group called Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). JNIM is linked to al-Qa’ida. JNIM mostly operates in the Sahel region, including Burkina Faso and Mali.  The threat from JNIM has in the past reached northern Côte d’Ivoire, near the border with Burkina Faso.  Attacks have happened in the Savanes and Zanzan Districts, including Comoé National Park.  These attacks have mainly targeted Ivoirian security forces, but civilians have also been targeted.  In 2021, Al-Qa’ida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) carried out 17 small-scale attacks that killed approximately 20 people.  After these attacks, the Côte d’Ivoire government increased security in northern Côte d’Ivoire.  Since 2021, there have been no attacks.

Trevor Story activated off 60-day injured list and will hit seventh for Red Sox, play shortstop

Boston Red Sox v Oakland Athletics OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 03: Trevor Story #10 of the Boston Red Sox kneels by second base after he was forced out in a double play against the Oakland Athletics in the eighth inning at Oakland Coliseum on April 3, 2024 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images) (Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox activated Trevor Story off the 60-day injured list before Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Story had been sidelined with a shoulder injury that required surgery after attempting to make a diving stop on a ball against Anaheim on April 5.

He was listed as Boston’s starting shortstop and scheduled to bat seventh in his first game since the season’s opening week. The 31-year-old batted .375 in four rehab games with Triple-A Worcester.

“Honestly, the baseball side of it is great. That’s awesome for us, but he’s ready to go,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on Saturday. “Physically, we feel he’s in a good spot.”

The projected recovery time for Story’s injury is six months. Cora noted that conversations about Story potentially returning to Boston’s lineup before the end of the season took a more serious tenor shortly after the All-Star break.

“I remember that game in Anaheim (in April) and said ‘No chance. He’s not going to play,’” Cora said, “but I think going to California for his rehab, disconnecting from the day-in, day-out here helped him.”

A two-time All-Star during his time with Colorado, Story is in the third season of a $140 million, six-year contract he signed with Boston before the 2022 season. This season, he was hitting .226 with four RBIs in eight games before the injury. He is a .265 career hitter with 177 homers and 534 RBIs over nine major league seasons.

To make room for Story on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned INF Mickey Gaspar to Triple A.

Ratings and Reviews

22K Ratings

Exceeds the MBTA’s haphazard mess.

Boston’s ancient buses & subways, Rapid-Transit above ground trains, and the MBTA commuter-Rail has for scores of years deviated chronically from their official-published schedules, arrives 6 or 7 minutes early at designated stops and invariably seeing few passengers, stops for whoever is there and proceeds to the next stop. This wreaks havoc with the times PROXIMITY pronounces as ex officio: reliable. Four years ago it it was of a magnitude greater then the official apps associated with the MBTA. Over 4 years there are refinements & improvements. The schedule deviations seem (especially regarding BUS service) to be weighted toward the MBTA’s putative schedule and does NOT appear to be a problem originating with the PROXIMITY APP.

Excellent service but please update for Green Line!

This app has been invaluable in the past for making my commute easier. The bus and subway trackers are much more accurate than the T’s official website and are very user-friendly and intuitive, letting you check the arrivals at certain stops without needing to pre-plan your whole trip. However, the app has not been updated to include the new Medford branch Green Line stations, which is a huge detriment as I visit Somerville fairly often and am thinking of moving there. Additionally, the stations on the Green Line D branch Westbound menu when selecting a new station are labeled all out of order and would be hugely confusing for users new to Boston. Please update the app so it can continue to offer us the helpful guidance it has in the past.

Simply...Best MBTA app on any platform!

Simply...Best MBTA app on any platform! (@ 5 stars) Update: The app has been very inaccurate for the past month. From 10 minutes before bus arrives turns suddenly to 3 minutes. If I am unlucky, it will be back to 28 minutes. No bus arrived nor passed by. The app is not dependable. It used to be. Bus 95 to West Medford in Sullivan does not have any bus info anymore. Please fix or at least get to the bottom of the issue. Thanks.

Judge dismisses families’ lawsuits against Harvard over morgue scandal

Families who sued Harvard University after loved ones’ remains were allegedly stolen and sold on the black market have had their cases dismissed .

Paula Peltonovich says she was told her dad, whose body was donated to Harvard Medical School for research, is one of the victims of the  morgue scandal .

“To know somebody bought something of my father’s or multiple things of my father’s, I want that back,” Peltonovich said.

Harvard’s morgue manager, Cedric Lodge, is accused of selling body parts from donated cadavers. He faces several criminal charges in the case, as do people who trafficked in the body parts.

Families of the victims hoped a lawsuit filed against Harvard would hold the university accountable. But a judge’s ruling Monday dismissed all  lawsuits against the school .

“How can Harvard just get away with this?” Peltonovich asked. “I just don’t understand.”

Cedric Lodge, former manager of the morgue at Harvard Medical School, leaves federal court in Boston, on June 14, 2023.

In the decision to dismiss the civil case against the school, the judge said that Harvard is immune because it acted in good faith and that it’s not liable for the alleged misconduct of its employee.

“Harvard gets basically a ‘get out of jail free” card,” said attorney Kathryn Barnett of the law firm Morgan & Morgan. “No responsibility for what happened in its morgue with the remains entrusted to it.”

Barnett is one of the attorneys representing the families.

She said Harvard turned a blind eye to what was happening in the morgue, and she said she’s profoundly disappointed in the judge’s ruling.

“To be a ruling that gives every school out there carte blanche to let criminals run wild in their morgue and so long as you don’t look, you’re scot-free,” Barnett said.

Attorneys for the families say they will appeal the decision.
