Charity Island Lighthouse Dinner Cruise, Lake Huron

The Charity Island Lighthouse was constructed in the late 1850s on the largest island in Saginaw Bay, at a time when the lumber industry ruled the east side of the state. While the lighthouse served proudly for many years, in the years following its automation and replacement by the Gravelly Shoal Light its condition had at one point deteriorated badly enough that it was placed on the lighthouse “doomsday list.” Things have turned around around for this historic Lake Huron beacon, however, and it can now be visited as part of a unique and thrilling dinner cruise. In this post, we’ll share some photos and information from a visit last summer – this year’s cruises start heading to the island at the end of May.

The “1857 Island Lighthouse Dining Adventure Cruise” is offered on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 28 through October 14th. Departures are weather dependent and leave from either Caseville Municipal Harbor in the Thumb or Brown’s Landing just north of Au Gres. Tour groups and some limited public availability fills out the weekday schedule. More info:  http://www.charityisland.net/ .

The Charity Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1857 as the shipping traffic in the area increased due to high demand for lumber. The waters around Charity Island have many shoals and shallow spots that are dangerous to large boats. The brick tower stood 39 feet tall and was attached by walkway to a wooden keeper’s dwelling. The tower was later built up to 45 feet tall. The light was automated in 1917, and by 1939 when the Gravelly Shoal Light went into service the station was abandoned and fell into disrepair. One of the first things you’ll notice when visiting is that the keeper’s dwelling has been reconstructed, and efforts to stabilize and preserve the tower are ongoing.

The ride to the island takes about an hour, and after arriving at the marina its is a short walk to the lighthouse. Dinner features crusty artisan french bread baked on the island in a woodburning stove, then a main course of either Great Lakes yellow perch or tenderloin steak tips. Wine is available to purchase, and it is possible to purchase bottles of a lighthouse-exclusive wine as well (pictured). Enjoy hearing the history of this lighthouse as well as some fun and interesting stories, and you’ll have some time to explore the grounds and climb the tower as well.

The return trip is time for sunset views over Lake Huron, dessert is served as well. Midwest Living ‘s Michigan Travel Ideas Guide named the Charity Island Lighthouse Dinner Cruise as one of its 10 great water adventures. For lighthouse enthusiasts, this is a great way to see one of the more elusive Lake Huron lights, while others will enjoy this trip for the quiet and relaxing atmosphere, dinner on an island, and stunning sunset views. Plenty of reviews on Trip Advisor offer tips and positive feedback, while the Facebook page for the lighthouse cruise posts frequent pictures and keeps conditions updated when needed. Tri-City Brewing in Bay City features this lighthouse on its Charity Island India Pale Ale beer bottles.

Charity Island Dinner Cruise

Adventure to Charity Island in Saginaw Bay for a dinner cruise. Enjoy a fine dinner , including opportunity to enjoy a taste of Great Lakes perch,  and exploration of a historic lighthouse and island coastal beachfront. The ride out, aboard the Northstar , offers an experience on a historic commercial fishing vessel retrofitted for this dinner cruise. Although no longer an active fishing vessel, this trip offers passengers a chance to get out on the water for a boat ride and gain a perspective about the look and feel of historic Great Lakes commercial fishing vessels. The Northstar  was built by the Nolan boat company in 1949. She started as a Commercial fishing boat operating in Lake Michigan, later adapted for use as ferryboat which ran for about 30 years out of Cheyboygan  to Bois Blanc Island, Mich.  Big Charity Island (along with Little Charity Island) is itself rich in fisheries history and heritage.

Lady of the Lakes Gets Ready For Charity Island Tours

In Michigan’s Upper Thumb, Charity Island dominates the horizon of Saginaw Bay, but the island is rarely visited. Thumbwind has been researching the history of the island and reached out to Captain Tom Carriveau, who has been taking visitors out on Charity Island Tours for over seven years. Here is our latest on Captain’s Tom’s preparations for the Summer.

We dropped in on Captain Tom Carriveau last Saturday to check his progress with outfitting his 50-foot tour boat “Lady of the Lakes”. Tom brought the Lady over from Leland Michigan where it had been conducting ferry service between Fishtown and Manitou Island in Lake Michigan. The tour boat is in the process of being refurbished for tours and chartering on Saginaw Bay this summer.

“It now has updated electronics including radar, VHF with AIS and a new stereo system” Tom noted. “We can take a passenger’s smartphone and play his or her favorite playlist on our onboard stereo speakers. It will be a great personal touch”

The AIS is the abbreviation for Automatic Identification System. It’s a digital VHF radio-based transponder system that can prevent collisions, and can protect boats from being run over from larger fast-moving ships. AIS is like a digital radar with precise position information utilizing GPS, VHF radio and sophisticated digital processing to automatically communicate between vessels without any operator interaction.

Charity Island Dinner Tours Begin

This will be the tour boats’ first summer in Saginaw Bay. “We anticipate having our first cruise out to Charity Island on June 8th. We will depart at Caseville Municipal Harbor at 4 pm, returning approximately 9:30 pm. Then we will start our regular weekend dinner cruises embarking from Caseville Harbor”. Explorer Charters be scheduling private events. Tom added “We will be hosting a couple of upcoming birthday parties and a company outing. We will be busy.”

Cruise Tours From Port Austin This Summer

It’s anticipated that the Lady will be offering tours out of Port Austin Harbor. Tom added, “I’ve been working with the Port Austin harbor master to operate off of the State Docks. It’s work in progress.” Captain Tom will offer mid-week tours of Port Austin Lighthouse, Burnt Cabin Point and Turnip Rock. “The Lady only drafts four feet. This enables us to get in areas where other boats this size cannot.”

RENTAL INFORMATION

New for 2022.

Due to the rising costs of Fuel and logistics of getting back and forth to the island we have instituted a 6 six night minimum.

The nightly rate is $750 for up to four adults.  Add $45 per person per night for each adult over 4.

Departures for the Island will be aboard a 30 passenger boat that will leave from the Au Gres, Area. There is an additional charge for the transportation to and from the island that is paid directly to the Captain of the boat when boarding. That fee was $350 last year and may be higher due to inflation we are experiencing this year.

The departure will be from Browns landing & RV park on dyer road, Tawas, Michigan.

We are limiting occupancy to 3 adult couples. In the case of families

we are limiting occupancy to two families.

We want to stress the island is located 10 miles from the mainland. This is an ideal venue for those looking for quiet time. If you have older kids they may get bored unless they are really into enjoying the outdoors and fishing.

The fees for extra People are for adults. We will not charge for children under 16. If you are a couple with 2 or 3 or 4 children the rate is as listed for up to 4 adults.

The Lighthouse and keepers quarters are located on the very northern tip of Big Charity Island, a heavily wooded Island with 3 miles of shoreline located10 miles offshore in the very middle of 20 mile wide Saginaw Bay.

The home is powered by Solar Panels and Wind turbine with backup Generator. If you google search the Big Charity Island you will be able to zoom in on the property. The light keepers home is incorrectly labeled as Charity Island lodge. The lodge is actually a two bedroom chalet about a mile down the shoreline and is not identified on the google map of the island.

Zooming in on the northern tip of the island you will see the lighthouse and property around the home in quite a bit of detail. The pic was taken after we had 7 years of low water… the lake is higher now so the shoreline is quite different, in a good way..

The Home has a full bath and four bedrooms upstairs, each bedroom has a trundle bed so each upstairs bedroom sleeps two persons. The master bedroom located downstairs has a queen size bed and 3/4 bath.

A additional half bath is located downstairs off the living room that features large windows providing unique panoramic views of the Lake Huron..

The galley style Kitchen comes complete with modern conveniences including microwave and gas range and full size electric refrigerator. (no garbage disposal, compost pile).

This two story home has a wrap-around deck with a dozen comfortable wicker chairs. Little charity Island just 3 miles south is always in view from the porch.

Maritime history surrounds this privately owned home with history Kiosks that relate highlights of the lighthouse’ past service located outside around the yard.

90% of the Island is managed by Federal Fish & Wildlife Service as Wildlife Sanctuary. Bald Eagles are a common sight from the house as are white pelicans that come to Saginaw bay each year from the Gulf of Mexico.

Song Birds are abundant. Island Wildlife includes Fox, Mink, raccoons, chipmunks, three bald eagles nests , dozens of swans, geese, wood ducks. Spring and fall Snowy Owls are often sighted on the island.

Various Wildflowers are abundant through out the year.

In addition, World Class fishing surrounds the island and can be enjoyed from a dock at in the Island marina located 10 minutes from the house or by wading off the rocky shoreline in front of the home.

There is a chicken coop on the property and, provided raccoons don’t get them , a half dozen chickens will be residing there, so Fresh eggs may be part of the amenities. If so, you will be expected to make sure they have water every couple of days.

The rental fee Includes all linens, appliances, etc.,

Other Amenities include – Fire pit on beach, gas grill on Deck, TV, Radio, Cd player.

There is a 6 night minimum.

Be Advised:

The light tower is connected to the lightkeepers home but it is in poor repair. We are attempting to initiate a effort to get it restored. Because of its condition we do not

recommend people going inside and climbing up the tower. We don’t prevent people from going up there but it is at your own risk.

On certain days, a tour boat “may or may not ” arrive between 11am & 12 noon with visitors/tourists who bring a picnic basket to enjoy at the dining pavilion located 150 feet from the lighthouse. These visitors will have time to take pictures of the lighthouse and read some of the history panels that are on the north side of the lighthouse. Typically these people are gone by 3:00 to 3:30 pm.

Most days you will have the whole island to yourself however, in the interest of full disclosure please note the following: Decades BEFORE we rebuilt the lightkeepers home Charity Island had long been a popular stopping place for local boaters in the area. Many just drop anchor and sit on their boat for a few hours then leave. Many will wade to shore to come up to the tower to check it out and they are typically back on their boats within 30 minutes or so.
