Train travel UK & Ireland...

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, a great perk if you work for a uk train company.

If you have worked for a British train operating company for over 12 months and are entitled to reduced rate or free travel on British trains, you are almost certainly entitled to free or reduced rate travel on most European trains as well.  Your partner and dependent children also qualify.  This is an amazing perk, though it's often not 'advertised' by your employer.  Network Rail safeguarded staff employed before 31 March 1996 also get this perk, although NR staff who joined after this date don't.

How does it work?

There are two basic options for travelling in Europe on 'privs':  (1) using an FIP International Reduced Rate card to get a discount or (2) using FIP International Free Travel Coupons for (in most cases) completely free travel.

(1) FIP International Reduced Rate Card & how to get one

There are special rates on Eurostar for holders of FIP cards, you can buy these from Eurostar telesales or from agencies such as International Rail, 0333 003 0423 or via www.bookmyrst.co.uk .

London to Paris or Brussels costs £34.50 each way in standard or £52.50 in standard premier (1st class) with an FIP card.

London to Any Belgian Station costs £46.50 each way in standard or £70.50 in standard premier (1st class) with an FIP card.

London to Rotterdam or Amsterdam costs £44.50 each way in standard or £62.00 in standard premier (1st class) with an FIP card.

(2)  FIP International Free Coupon Tickets & how to order them

How to make reservations, more information, a discussion forum & to read up on the small print, how to apply, more information welcome.

Feedback would be welcome , if you're a member of rail staff and use your free or reduced rate European travel facilities.

A quarterly newsletter ‘ Outboard ‘, is mailed to all members – this gives details of all activities, including minutes of meetings and forthcoming social events, and is particularly appreciated by members who cannot attend meetings.

(Affiliated to the British Transport Pensioners’ Federation)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] TRAVEL FACILITIES

Enhanced Leisure Benefit

The discount available for rail staff, known as the ‘Priv’ rate, has been set at 75% of the full price fare ever since the Rail Staff Travel Scheme was set up. Using the current fare names, this means the ‘Anytime’ fare is used to calculate the ‘Priv’ rate.

On and from 7th September 2014 (date of sale), a twelve months’ trial is to commence and the fare on which a ‘Priv’ rate is to be calculated is being expanded to include day and period walk-up off-peak fares (including super off-peak fares). The time restrictions applying to these tickets will also apply to the ‘Priv’ discounted ticket. ‘Priv’ fares continue to be available at ticket offices and on train (if the ticket office is not open at the departure station).

The following are not covered by this new arrangement:-

  • Advance Purchase fares
  • Season Tickets
  • Any fares that include a London Travelcard
  • Non-safeguarded (i.e. TOC) staff only – any fares that include London Underground zone fares, unless making a through London journey.

This new ‘Priv’ rate is available for leisure travel by:-

  • Safeguarded staff using their Staff Travel Card (no need to date a box)
  • Non-safeguarded staff using the TOC Privilege Card
  • FIP card holders visiting the UK will also now be eligible for discounts on the additional fare types at their prevailing discount rate – typically 50%.

This twelve months’ trial is being jointly supported by all of the Train Operating Companies who want to provide access to increased UK discounted rail travel benefits for their employees as well as those safeguarded employees in other rail companies. The success of the trial will be evaluated in September 2015.

European Travel – Rail Staff Travel in Europe (FIP)

There have been some amendments to arrangements. FIP discounted travel bookings are handled for RSTL by Deutsche Bahn UK, PO Box 687A, Surbiton KT6 6UB. You can contact DB-UK by telephone on 08444 997171 if you are planning a simple journey using your FIP travel facilities. For example, to make a Eurostar reservation from London St. Pancras to Paris at the special FIP reduced rate fare, call that number, quote your FIP card number (bottom right hand corner of the card) and they’ll do the rest. For multiple station journeys e.g. travelling from London St. Pancras to Italy via France and Switzerland, you need to complete an IPTIS booking form (Form 1413) which can be found online at  http://www.raildeliverygroup.com/rst/forms.html . You can send your IPTIS booking form to DB-UK by email, fax or post – full details on the form itself. Please note DB-UK will charge a non refundable deposit for all tickets and reservations on hold. The fee will be 10%, or a minimum of £1.00, whichever is higher. DB-UK will hold tickets for a maximum of seven days. Once the order is confirmed, the deposit will be applied to the invoice. The deposit for any provisional booking which is not confirmed within the seven day period will not be refunded.

Change to the use of FIP facilities in Portugal for UK Rail Staff

With effect from 1st January 2015 (travel date), Portuguese Railways (CP) are reducing the level of exchange that they can offer to all fellow FIP carriers. Henceforth they allow the following:-

  • One free ticket (coupon) per calendar year for active staff only.
  • One free ticket during the forty five months following retirement for retired staff who were entitled to free travel when active.
  • Tickets at 50% discount only (e. no coupons) for all other categories of staff and their entitled family members.

In practice, this change means that retired safeguarded staff and all family members of both active and retired staff will no longer be able to benefit from one coupon a year in Portugal. However, retiring safeguarded staff still have nine months from the date of leaving in which to apply for one CP free coupon, provided that one has not already been issued during the final year of active entitlement. When applying for coupons for Portugal, please bear in mind that the last date for return travel is 31st December 2014.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] FOUR GENERATIONS OF RAILWAYMEN

Thanks to member Mrs. E. Ridge for the following:

My mother-in-law, Dorothy Ridge, went to her parents for the birth of her first baby. On 1st November 1928 the midwife asked grandfather to be, Charlie Barrett, to pump extra water from the garden well before going on duty in the signal box at Clifton Without, York. Mother-in-law said she thought the trains were coming through the window, but baby was safely delivered and at just one hour old was taken into the signal box so that Charlie could hold his new grandson.

Also living in the Crossing Cottage were Charlie and Annie’s two sons. Stan worked in the Engine Depot at York Station and Charles Vickers, who would later retire from Norwich as Area Superintendent. Both Charlie Barrett and his father-in-law had been on the trains taking men and equipment on the ships to France during World War 1.

The baby was baptised, in York, Charles Walter after both grandfathers as was the custom, but the family always called him Peter. School in York followed, Technical College and then National Service with the Royal Engineers in Nairobi, Kenya. It was here that he was taught quantity surveying. Home again he was articled and after passing his exams he too joined the Railway.

With Transmark he worked in many interesting places but his favourite was Hong Kong. There was a Chinese workforce, Australian contractors and BR Transmark to check that no corners were cut. He said it was a real honour to work alongside these experts.

He was to retire from Paddington as BR’s Principal Quantity Surveyor – the last of four generations of a Railway family.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” image=”474″ img_size=”300×200″ alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] KINGSWEAR STATION DOG

Thanks to Stan Bower for the following:

Since I retired in 1986, my wife and I have made regular trips around the country making good use of our travel facilities. Amongst our most enjoyable outings are visits to some of the old preserved steam railways. A particular favourite is the Dartmouth Steam Railway, which runs from Paignton to Kingswear, where there is a connecting ferry to Dartmouth. It is a most pleasurable journey on the train with many fine views of the coast and River Dart on the way, but it is at Kingswear that I was intrigued by the notice on a poster about Jim the collie dog who was found abandoned at the station in 1902. He was taken onto the staff and went around the station with a box attached to his collar and collected contributions from passengers for the GWR Widows and Orphans Fund, until he was killed by a motor car in 1909. He was buried in the station area and it took me many visits until I finally located his gravestone.

I remember that we had a similar dog at Euston Station when I first went there in the 1950s and I often wonder what happened to him.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image image=”473″ alignment=”center” border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”300×200″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] MYSTERY PICTURE

All waterways have re-opened in Livingston Parish, officials say

L IVINGSTON PARISH, La. (WAFB) - Officials announced Monday afternoon, June 24, that all waterways have re-opened in Livingston Parish.

The announcement came after an emergency partial closure of the Amite River was put in place from the weir south to Lake Maurepas back on Saturday, June 22. The emergency closure was announced due to high water levels.

All waterways in Livingston Parish and Ascension Parish were initially shut down on Thursday, June 20, due to rising water levels. The waterways were then re-opened on Saturday morning, June 22, before part of the Amite River was again closed.

The high water levels that led to the waterways being closed were caused by recent high winds from tropical weather in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sandbags were available at the Springfield Fire Department, Killian Town Hall Fire Department, and Maurepas Fire Department.

People who go on the water are urged to keep safety in mind.

I certainly would not trust any newspaper article with such figures...500.000 safeguarded + family members. Sensational stuff. Where could they possibly get such a figure? I think at privatisation the railways only employed 40,000 or so...and many left, jumped ship or didn't have the required years to qualify. I also know, living in York, a number of ex railway and carriage works employees who never use their passes. McNulty is really clutching at straws if this is the best he can do to save a few bob.

scotsman

It's a pathetic attempt to cut money - this week sees the Government deservedly protect the Armed Forces' rights in law, while they attempt to claw back money who served the country on the railways. The parallels between the two being that both were poorly paid, with little perks to the job - passes being the main one for rail staff. While railwaymen and women could leave at anytime and weren't deployed abroad -they did a tough job when more skill was required and the pay was lower. In all honesty, if McNulty tried to remove staff travel for current TOC staff he might have got away with it - no doubt the high wages of some (and not the vast majority) of Drivers would be used to justify cutting it. It seems quite pathetic that some people who worked all their lives on the railway, never got anywhere near the level of pay that some staff currently enjoy are going to have their only perk taken from them - leaving them on the state and an ok BR pension. Their quality of life could be affected by the cost of having to pay for the trains they previously got for free. [/rant]

Thank God they're targetting former employees travel privileges. I'd hate for them to highlight the wasteful money drain that is rolling stock leasing, modern railway operations and TOC/Infrastructure interfaces. That could lead to some kind of reform, or something.

ajax103 said: It also states that staff get 75% discount on LUL which isn't entirely correct, I cannot speak for safeguarded members but FCC is the only TOC which serves London which has a agreement with TfL for discounted fares within the London area to date. I haven't heard of the other TOCs offering such travel benefits. Click to expand...

Presumably MP's will also have their free rail travel taken off of them and their second home allowances as well. After all no one has ever forced anybody to be an MP (in fact they are queuing up for the jobs) so why should they get these perks. I would like to know how much this McNulty is being paid to produce this report, as far as I can see he is just another "privileged" person willing to kick others who are not as well off as him

One of the few perks the older members of staff get and the blue ***** want to save a few pennies, all politicians are hypocrites they have no shame, ALL Railway staff should get free travel let alone less (My view only as I don't want to get into the old argument again)

How many guards bust railway staff travelling on their trains anyway? When I was a guard I'd never be fussy about any railway staff on my train, regardless of whether they were safeguarded or not and regardless of whether they had filled a box in or not. I lost count of the number of times a man with boxes would ask to borrow a pen so he could fill a box in (which we all know is code for "you don't mind if I don't fill it in, do you?") and I'd just tell them not to worry. I know there is that one guy at every depot who would penalty fare his granny if he had chance and there are always over zealous barrier staff, but in the grand scheme of things would this really change anything?

Captain Chaos

I cannot see that they would save much if anything by doing this anyway. I see maybe one or two retired staff with boxes a week at most. It's hardly anything when compared to actual numbers of paying passengers. Perhaps the government should be more concerned with revenue that is actually lost on DOO lines. This would be a good start. My local line would be a good place to begin. The amount of fare evasion on the Reading-Bedwyn line particularly after about midday is shocking. This line has been like it for years and years and virtually nothing is done about it. The main reason people quote for not paying is because 'no-one ever checks tickets on here so why should I pay'? Attention should be paid to actual revenues lost as opposed to percieved revenues lost. Implying that everyone who has this facility actually uses it is probably nonsense. Do they even have accurate records of how many journeys each box user makes per year and also where these journeys are made from and to? I doubt it. The notion that PRIV's are losing the railways money is also absurd. Take this as an example: London - Manchester PRIV SOR: £69.75 London - Manchester SVR: £70.00 London - Manchester SVR (with Y-P/S-R etc.): £46.20 It is actually cheaper to use a railcard for this journey than a PRIV (and I understand that the railcard discounted ticket is also unrestricted on VT). However assuming that the PRIV user is travelling off-peak and wouldn't be entitled to any other railcard then the actual cost to the TOC in this case is an eye-watering £0.25!

Is the railway actually losing any money? Is ATOC paying for these people's fares? Or is it a case of this is potential revenue missed?

Its also completely untrue that Staff (or ex staff) get free travel. Those who have passes or boxes or priv cards do so because their employer (or former employer) PAY ATOC for the passes - which is why staff then pay tax as they are a "benefit in kind". When I retired, my company paid several thousand pounds to ATOC to provide my benefits in retirement, and my tax bill was over £800 for the privilege. So - will I now get a refund if those facilities are removed?

Some safeguarded staff will use all their boxes every year, others will use some of them now and again, some will not use any. It is a complete fallacy to think that these staff members and their dependents will pay for any travel they undertake at the moment, supposing that their facilities were taken away. Most of the travel will be optional, and people simply will not travel.

What amazes me in addition to the many valid observations already made is that the so called 'savings' (which as many have pointed out are only real savings if (ex)staff choose to actually use the train) is that the benefits being targeted by McNulty are in perpetual decline. Safeguarded staff still in the industry may chose to change employer to one which may not offer travel facilities (FOC / Engineering / NR) and therefore lose their entitlement forever. Family members (children) lose their entitlement at 25 years of age or a when earning about £100 wage a week, whichever comes first. Retired staff often become infirm as they grow older and only the fittest can risk a nightmare journey on crowded trains so that naturally selects out those good folk. The rest of us may just chose to use the car like the majority of people in this country if staying away for any period. Of course the this all ignores the legal status and moral position of these facilities since the concept of safeguarded staff was created by the Rail privatisation legislation and the funding of these by non-TOC employers. It cannot be ignored that travel facilities often formed part of the geberal wage negotions year on year even if change was only acheived occassionally. Finally there is the negative cost to the treasury of all the Benefit in Kind tax take that would disappear overnight - not huge but quantifiable unlike the so called savings which can only be a wild estimate. Tories - dont you just love them!

tbtc said: I'd agree with you, but for the reason that Guards will "turn a blind eye", which is why I think this won't really save any money and is a headline-grabbing waste of time from the Government. I can't find any reference in the McNulty report regarding staff travel facilities, or to the 500,000 safeguarded former BR employees that the Guardian claims are entitled to them. Although I haven't read every word, searches for keywords such as safeguarded, staff travel concessions etc show a nil return. There's only a short reference to pensions for that matter, even though the industy's pension fund has a substantial shortfall.

Surely 'Safeguarded' means totally safe, I cannot see if challenged in a court of law how the government could legally win a case for withdrawing something set in stone. It could also be a vote loser for the Tories, they wouldn't get mine for sure and probably thousands more staff, ex staff and their families.

Returning Cards and Passes to RST

Replacement fee.

  • Booking Fee for International travel through International Rail

Obtaining a Full Birth Certificate or Marriage Certificate

Privilege season ticket mileage allowances, child dependant gross weekly income limit.

  • Housekeeper Dependant Gross Weekly Income Limit

The cheapest method to return cards and passes to RST is to e-mail us images of them each cut into 4 pieces. When you cut the card or pass into 4 pieces, the card serial number and the name of the person printed on it must be visible, to allow us to match it to its record in the Rail Staff Travel database.

If you are unable to send images, please return all Cards and Passes (not cut into 4 pieces) to RST by "signed for" or "special delivery guaranteed" post (previously known as recorded and registered delivery). This is to provide additional protection for your valuable staff travel documents when you are returning them to be changed or cancelled.

The current Card and Pass replacement fee is £15.00 per Card/Pass for the first replacement in a card year. For a second loss in a card year the replacement fee is increased to £25.00 per Card/Pass.

Booking Fee for International travel through International Rail

The current booking fee is £10.00 per booking. There is a significant subsidy in place that is supported by RST.

You are of course always free to use whichever agency best suits your travel needs and preferences.

International Rail continues to offer the widest range of international travel options across the market.

FIP travel is non-contractual and is based on a reciprocal exchange between European rail carriers.  RST is not obliged to provide a booking service, nor to pay on behalf of staff any fees associated with this service.

Where RST require a copy of a full birth certificate or marriage certificate, then these can be obtained from the authority that maintains the registrations of births and marriages. In England and Wales this is through the HM Gov website, or in Scotland through the National Records Scotland website. Other countries will have their own processes.

Please send us a copy, not the original, as RST are not liable for the loss of or damage to, or any consequential loss arising from the loss of or damage to, original documents that are sent to us however this may arise.

  5. How do you feel about rail staff travel

The only reason BR was generous in giving staff travel perks in the past was because they couldn't afford to pay decent wages, and the railway paid quite a lot less than a lot of other industries.
