Paramore Announce 'Brand New Eyes' Tour Dates

After spending their summer opening for [artist id="1003"]No Doubt[/artist] in 15,000-seat amphitheaters and massive hockey arenas, [artist id="1968732"]Paramore[/artist] pledged to go [article id="1615639"]"smaller" on the headlining tour [/article] in support of their forthcoming [article id="1614916"] Brand New Eyes album.[/article]

"We haven't hashed it all out yet, but it will be smaller, due to the fact that the tour we're doing right now is so large and, like, ticket prices are on a whole new level ... everything is a whole new level for us," frontwoman Hayley Williams told MTV News. "And we love it, but we want to do something that's really intimate and that our fans can be right up there and don't have to break their banks [for tickets]. It will just be really fun. I'm stoked."

And, it looks like they're making good on that promise.

On Wednesday (August 12), Paramore announced the dates and (decidedly small -- for them, at least) venues for that tour, which kicks off on September 29 -- the same day Brand New Eyes hits stores -- in Pomona, California, and will crisscross the continent for a month before wrapping with a November 1 homecoming gig in Nashville. Fueled by Ramen labelmates the Swellers and fellow Nashville act Paper Route will serve as the opening acts.

Special pre-sale tickets go on sale Monday, with remaining ducats going on sale to the general public on August 21 and 22. For more information, check out the band's official site, Paramore.net.

Album review: Paramore – ‘Brand New Eyes’

Third album maturity amounts to the anger being turned up, and effectively so

brand new eyes tour

You can see it in the pointed use of lower case lettering in the album title on the artwork, in the cruelly dismembered and mounted butterfly on the cover and in the tormented song titles – ‘Turn It Off’, ‘Ignorance’, ‘Playing God’. [a]Paramore[/a] have not only grown up, but grown into a cynical bunch. Despite being largely invisible to the ‘serious’ music fan in your life, Paramore are, pre-teen by pre-teen, taking over the world.

‘Brand…’ sorry, that should be ‘brand new eyes’ , is their third album, and they’re keen to show that their spell in showbusiness so far, coupled with that awkward business of being a teenager, hasn’t been plain sailing. “You don’t deserve a point of view”, yelps role model to thousands of adolescent girls Hayley Williams on ‘Playing God’, “the only thing you see is you”. And if you thought that was harsh, then try this: “Next time you point a finger/I might have to bend it back/Or break it, break it off.” Thankfully, Paramore’s new-found rage hasn’t impinged on their talent for crafting a joyful pop song, as evidenced by the high octane likes of ‘Careful’ and ‘Ignorance’ . They might be dark in tone, but they’re still a fairground-full of fun.

‘Looking Up’ is the glinting jewel in the ‘brand new eyes’ crown. Not nearly as arsed-off as some of the other songs on the record, it’s the kind of heart-swelling extravaganza that makes you want to grab the nearest person and pledge to travel to the ends of the earth with them. ‘Where The Lines Overlap’ goes on to give something back to the tens of thousands of fans who’ll be seeing the band on their tour this December , with Williams musing “I’ve got a feeling if I sing this loud enough/You’ll sing it back to me”. One hopes her eardrums are ready for the noise come winter…

Paramore also try and showcase their maturity by chucking a couple of slowies into the mix. ‘The Only Exception’ turns out to be a rather sappy, nondescript love song, which doesn’t quite warrant the abrupt change of pace. It feels like something [a]Katy Perry[/a] would dismiss for being too lightweight, with its mechanical, campfire strumming and general uninspiring air. Its saving grace, however, comes with Williams’ vocals, which are flawless and sturdy throughout. Even though the song gets soppy, she never does – weakness just ain’t in this lady’s repertoire, and for that we offer her a hefty high five.

The other downplayed moment is ‘Misguided Ghosts’ , which strips away even more of the distinctive Paramore sound and replaces it with some almost folksy acoustic finger-picking. It’s perfectly pleasant but will hardly get [a]Laura Marling[/a] quaking in her boots. But this isn’t what we need Paramore for. We’ve got plenty of lady pop stars trilling about boys’n’love’n’stuff; what we really need is more women yelling their hearts out, being pissed off and then working through it, just like Willams does on the rest of the album. Sure, the two slower tracks might make for a break in the relentless pace, but who needs the rest? If you just so happen to be one of the best in the up-tempo pop-smattered emo-punk game, why bother slowing down? For this lot, more is most certainly more.

Background [ ]

After non-stop touring for the prior album, Riot! , the band had stated that they were facing "internal issues" in early 2008. While writing new material, lead singer Hayley Williams struggled in believing that the expectations for the new album were going to be met as well as being concerned about the lyrics.

"I was like, 'This isn't a feel-good song, because I'm writing about something I'm going through right now, and it's still painful,'" she continued. "And I confused that with actually not liking the songs, when actually I was prouder of them than I've ever been before. They're heavier emotions for me... I'm still going through some of this stuff, and these songs are really healing to me."

By showing the lyrics she had created, it had helped the band to talk more freely with each other and to resolve the issues they had been struggling with.

The band had intended to record the album in their hometown of Franklin, Tennessee, they ended up recording in Calabasas, California with producer Rob Cavallo ; he also produced the song Decode by Paramore for the film Twilight. The name "brand new eyes" was used for the album as it represented the overcoming of their issues and how they saw each of the other band members.

Known for their anthemic, richly emotive brand of pop/rock, Paramore have garnered acclaim that far exceeds their initial success as one of the guiding lights of the emo scene of the mid-2000s. Led by singer Hayley Williams, the group broke through with 2007's Riot!, hitting number 15 on the Billboard 200 and spawning their trademark hit "Misery Business." They reached number two with 2009's Brand New Eyes and topped the Billboard 200 with 2013's Paramore, winning a Grammy along the way for the single "Ain't It Fun." Over the years, the band have expanded their sound, embracing an increasingly genre-crossing blend of '80s-style synth and dance-rock influences, a process that also found them paring down from a sometime-quintet to a trio for 2017's sophisticated After Laughter. Away from Paramore, Williams has collaborated on equally diverse projects with artists like B.o.B, Zedd, and Chvrches. In 2020, she embarked on a solo career with Petals for Armor. The album debuted at number 18 on the Billboard 200 and paved the way for her sophomore LP, 2021's Flowers for Vases/Descansos. In 2023, Williams was back with Paramore for their sixth studio album, the artful, post-punk-influenced This Is Why and its companion remix collection, Re: This Is Why.

Hailing from Franklin, Tennessee, Paramore initially came together after Hayley Williams moved to town from Meridian, Mississippi, in 2002. It was there that she met brothers Josh and Zac Farro while taking part in a local music program for homeschooled students. Already a powerhouse vocalist at the age of 13, Williams soon caught the attention of Atlantic Records, which signed her as a solo artist. However, clashing with the label over the direction of her music, she convinced them to let her piece together a full lineup with her Franklin-area friends. Officially launched in 2004, Paramore featured Williams, along with guitarist Josh Farro, drummer Zac Farro, guitarist Jason Bynum, and bassist Jeremy Davis.

From the start, Paramore's hooky melodies and mature songwriting seemed to belie the fact that they were all still in their teens. They eventually cosigned with Fueled by Ramen, a Florida-based label with a strong roster of emo-pop acts, and in July 2005, released their full-length debut, All We Know Is Falling. In addition to a performance at New Jersey's Bamboozle Festival and multiple dates on the Warped Tour circuit, Paramore played shows with such simpatico bands as Simple Plan and Straylight Run. Hunter Lamb replaced Bynum on guitar in December 2005, and the group spent the following summer on the Warped Tour once again, cementing their relationship with the fans who had caught the previous summer's shows. Lamb parted ways with the band in early 2007 to get married, and Paramore continued onward as a quartet.

The following summer saw the release of the band's sophomore album, Riot!, which was recorded alongside producer David Bendeth. Buoyed by the popular singles "Misery Business," "crushcrushcrush," and "That's What You Get," Riot! turned Paramore into industry heavyweights, going platinum within its first 13 months of release and earning the group a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. It was around this time that guitarist Taylor York (a longtime friend of Williams and the Farro brothers) joined the band. Paramore toured exhaustively in support of the record, even landing a two-month jaunt across the continental U.S. with Jimmy Eat World. Meanwhile, the band found time to contribute two songs to the best-selling Twilight soundtrack, including the Top 40 single "Decode." A live album entitled The Final Riot! was released several weeks after the Twilight soundtrack, capturing the group's strength as a live act and concluding the long touring cycle in support of Riot!

As the lead singer, co-songwriter, and main lyricist, Williams was the focus of much of the attention Paramore received during this period. Her big voice and undeniable charisma drew comparisons to icons like Debbie Harry, helping the group stand out among their punk and emo peers, but also leading to some much-publicized friction within the band. Despite rumors of a breakup, Paramore's lineup remained intact, and they retreated to a California studio in 2009 to work on a third album. Following a popular summer tour with No Doubt, the group issued Brand New Eyes, a pensive record that featured some of Paramore's strongest songwriting to date. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, buoyed by "The Only Exception" which became the band's highest-charting single to date in America.

On the heels of Paramore's success, Williams embarked on a string of cameos as a featured artist on other albums. In 2009, she guested on the New Found Glory track "Tangled Up." Also appearing that year was her first solo recording, "Teenagers," which was included on the soundtrack to the horror film Jennifer's Body. The following year, she returned to the upper reaches of the charts with "Airplanes," a collaboration with hip-hop artist B.o.B that peaked at number two in America and topped the charts in England.

However, by late 2010, long-simmering tensions between Williams and the Farro brothers had reached a boiling, and both Josh and Zac Farro departed the group. Days after his exit, Josh Farro wrote a blog post detailing the band's history and his reasons for leaving. In 2011, Paramore released the single "Monster," which was included on the Transformers: Dark of the Moon soundtrack. This was the first song recorded without the Farro brothers and first to feature York taking over all guitar duties.

The following year, Paramore (now featuring Williams, York, and Davis) began work on new material with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, Neon Trees, M83) and former Lostprophets drummer Ilan Rubin. In 2013, they delivered their fourth studio album, the eponymously titled Paramore. Heralded by the hit singles "Still into You" and "Ain't It Fun," the record featured an expansive stylistic approach that found the group incorporating a variety of sounds including synth pop, dance-rock, funk, and gospel. A major breakthrough for the band, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and ultimately achieved platinum status. It also earned them their first-ever Grammy, with "Ain't It Fun" taking home the award for Best Rock Song.

Following Paramore's tour in 2015, they parted ways with bassist Davis, who left the band amid a legal dispute over royalties. Williams and York eventually moved forward musically after reconnecting with original drummer Zac Farro, who initially came on board as a studio guest and later rejoined as a full-time member. In 2017, the solidified trio released the single "Hard Times" as the leadoff track from their fifth studio album, After Laughter. Once again produced with Meldal-Johnsen, it featured an even more genre-open, '80s synth pop-inspired approach to songwriting, marked by Williams' hard-won lyrical maturity. The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and topped both the Alternative and Rock charts, spawning yet more singles, including "Told You So," "Fake Happy," and "Rose-Colored Boy."

Following an extensive two-year tour, Paramore went on hiatus in 2019. Williams used the time off to begin work on a solo project, writing songs with York and Paramore's touring bassist Joey Howard. In January 2020, she debuted the tracks "Simmer" and "Leave It Alone," which featured a darker, more artistically minded tone than previous Paramore songs. Her debut album, Petals for Armor, debuted at number 18 on the Billboard 200. Nine months later, in February 2021, she released her second full-length solo effort, Flowers for Vases/Descansos. Produced by Canon Blue's Daniel James, the album found Williams playing all the instruments herself.

Paramore eventually regrouped and Williams, York, and Farro returned to the studio. In September 2021, they released "This Is Why" as the first single and title track off the group's sixth studio album. Produced by Carlos de la Garza, This Is Why arrived in February 2023 and found the band returning to a more guitar-oriented post-punk sound. The album hit number two on the Billboard 200 and topped both the Alternative and Rock Albums charts. A companion remix album, Re: This Is Why, followed that October and featured traditional remixes of songs from the album, along with re-recorded cover versions by artists like Foals, Bartees Strange, Remi Wolf, and others. A year after its release, This Is Why won Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Performance and Best Rock Album, making Paramore the first band fronted by a woman to take home the latter award. ~ Matt Collar
