Brian Blessed

The first album I bought

A Paul Robeson record

“I was a war baby and there was a great hero in Britain at the time called Paul Robeson who had this bass baritone. I got his album and played it until it fell apart. I actually met him. There was the World Peace Congress to mark the end of all war, and I went to Sheffield and saw him. I got in the front row and he sang ‘Canoe Song’ from the film Sanders Of The River . The whole audience was sobbing, 5,000 people. Then I rushed backstage, I was just 11 years of age, and said ‘you didn’t sing ‘It Still Suits Me’’ and Robeson said ‘good heavens young man, that’s a duet with my wife, would you like to sing it with me?’ Christ almighty! I sang it with Paul Robeson in his dressing room at the World Peace Congress in Sheffield.”

The first song I fell in love with

Petula Clark – ‘Downtown’

“I was in a [1960s] series called Z-Cars playing Fancy Smith, the tough guy, and it was live on television each week. Once we’d shot, I’d go downtown from White City to London with the rest of the lads and we’d celebrate in the Black Sheep, a restaurant and very small nightclub. It was there that I heard ‘Downtown’ by Petula Clark, which was full of verve and the love of the city. I was absolutely living it. I knew Petula Clark, a charming, lovely girl, she was often at Television Centre , I’d say hello to her when we’d be in the studio next door.”

My first gig

‘The Planets Suite’, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Albert Hall

Recommended

“I went to the Albert Hall with Patrick Stewart – Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek . We got on the coal wagon from Yorkshire right down to London because we had no money – he was two years younger than me and I was about twelve – washed ourselves in all the toilets and got over and they let us in free for ‘The Planet Suites’. It was bloody marvellous. I was always leading him into trouble. I knew him from the age of nine, we went on drama courses together for the next six or seven years, we both wanted to be actors. We both went to the Old Vic Theatre school. Me and Patrick go way back, we’re brothers really. I take him mountaineering – he’s a marvellous actor but a bloody awful mountaineer. [Does impression of Patrick Stewart freezing on a mountain].”

The song that reminds me of home

Sidney Torch And Queen’s Hall Light Orchestra – ‘Coronation Scot’

“It was the music to [radio detective series] Paul Temple , which was wonderful, brilliantly done. It had a train’s motion on it and the whole nation loved it. These were the war years so doodlebugs and bombs were bloody coming over and we had an air raid shelter in the back garden. We had staying with us two Polish pilots who’d shot down lots of Messerschmitts. People were very frightened of it all but I loved it, for the kids it was exciting.”

The song I wish I’d written

Enya – ‘Orinoco Flow’

“It’s fabulous and it reminds me of my expeditions in South America when I went to the lost world in Venezuela and crashed into the forest and managed to survive and work my way out. I was there to climb the highest mountain in South America, Aconcagua, 23,000 feet high. Enya ’s music says it all. ‘Orinoco Flow’ is genius.”

The song I do at karaoke

Pavarotti – ‘O Sole Mio’

“A few years ago they had that programme Stars In Their Eyes and Kenneth Branagh, who I know, said ‘you’re not frightened of anything?’ and I said ‘no, Everest, nothing frightens me’. And he asked me to voice Pavarotti. I said ‘this can’t be done’. When I was in the musical Cats , there was Luciano Pavarotti backstage one day and [opera singers from The Three Tenors] Plácido Domingo and José Carreras – and they bowed to him. I said ‘why do you bow?’ ‘Because he is the greatest of all, he has the greatest voice’. So I walked onto the stage at Granada Television to do Stars In Their Eyes as Pavarotti, which is a tall order. The make-up was fantastic, I looked exactly like him. I walk through the mist and the audience applaud going ‘well he looks like him but does he sound like him?’ And then to their shock and amazement, [sings, almost breaking dictaphone] “OH SOLE-MEEEEEOOOO!” And I won. That’s my karaoke.”

The song I can’t get out of my head

Jimmy Young – ‘Unchained Melody’

“He does it so simply. My first love, she was called Nancy, beautiful woman, black hair and black eyes, I met her on a drama course. It was the first time I was in love in my life and this made me think of her all the time and shaped me emotionally. We only held hands but that song was being played all the time and it reminds me of her because I could never get to see her. She lived 20 miles away, which was hard for me then, and we couldn’t date each other, we’d write letters.”

The song I can no longer listen to

John Keating And His Orchestra – ‘Theme From Z-Cars’

“It’s a fabulous piece of music, which they play at Everton and Tranmere Rovers [football grounds]. The only reason I say is because there was a large cast of regulars – Jock, Lynch, Steele and the inspector and sergeants – and they’re all dead. I’m the only one alive. So when it’s on television I just close my ears because it makes me weep. I’m going on from strength to strength, I get fitter and fitter and fitter, I train a lot and I’m fit and strong and I go on expeditions to Everest and the North Pole, and they’ve all bloody died. Twelve of them, I can’t believe it.”

The song that makes me want to dance

Nancy Sinatra – ‘These Boots Are Made For Walkin’’

“I wear really strong boots on Mount Everest and when I’m up there, as I’m walking on the glaciers, I sometimes find myself dancing on the glaciers of Mount Everest to Nancy Sinatra ’s ‘These Boots Are Made For Walkin’’. I dance on the lower slopes of Mount Everest.”

The song I want played at my ‘funeral’

Not applicable

“I’m never gonna fucking die. Bollocks to death. As John Donne the poem said, ‘Death, thou shalt die’. The only thing that dies in life is death. I’ll live forever love. I’ll go on and on and on transcending different spheres. We are the children of stardust, yearning for stars. No love, you’ll never get me dying, fuck death. And I’ll not make a pact with old age. I’m sick of people making pacts with old age. It’s not how old you are, it’s how you are old.

“As regards to my funeral, I’ll kick death into the middle of next fucking week. I don’t die, love. Can I have another one in light of the fact that I’m not going to die? Maybe ‘Flash’. Everywhere I go, people ask me to say ‘Gordon’s alive’. GORDON’S ALIVE! I was near the North Pole, I remember getting there with a British expedition, and a fucking submarine came through the ice like Sean Connery’s …Red October . The captain came out and looked at me and said ‘oh, it’s him, please say Gordon’s alive…’ It’s a celebration of life. So everyone can say ‘Gordon’s alive’ and ‘Brian’s alive’ and I’m not dead and I’ll never fucking die. Fuck death.”

‘Tubular Bells: A 50th Anniversary Celebration’, the album featuring Brian Blessed & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is out October 28 on Cleopatra Records, and tours from October 31

Tubular Bells in The Exorcist

By Mayer Nissim

Facebook share

Tubular Bells! With The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra! AND Brian Blessed!!!

Listen to this article

Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells was a slow starter, taking a couple of months to climb into the UK albums charts after it was first released in May 1973.

It gathered pace over the years, and the first-ever Virgin Records album has now sold over 2.7 million copies in the UK and 15 million worldwide.

  • QUIZ: Can you name these iconic albums from an EXTREME closeup?

It's spawned a number of sequel albums and spinoffs, and for its 50th anniversary it will be celebrated with three very special live shows in Nottingham, London and Birmingham.

It is being presented live by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra with band and singers from the London Contemporary Voices Choir and Ells Shaw, arranged and conducted by Simon Dobson.

Brian Blessed will be the compere for the shows, and will also perform the parts of the Master of Ceremonies and The Caveman.

Tubular Bells - Celebrating 50 Years

"I must say it is a great honour to be part of such an iconic work of art," said Blessed.

"I first became aware of the legendary album in 1973 when I was appearing in I Claudius as Emperor Augustus Caesar for the BBC TV.

He added: "I must confess I was mesmerised at the time by Mike Oldfield's creation.

"I am thrilled to bits to be given the opportunity to work with Simon and the orchestra to bring this wonderful music to life."

Brian Blessed in fine voice

Simon Dobson added: "The show will be a glorious technicolour tribute to T ubular Bells , one of the most iconic and seminal albums of all time.

We aim to build on the legacy of this incredible music and bring a modern reworking to life with huge musical forces, projection mapping and special guests."

Producer Martin Gernon said: " Tubular Bells is one of the most iconic pieces of 20th century British Music.

"To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its launch with this spectacular new show and new recording with the Royal Philharmonic and some of the best session musicians in the UK, is an absolute privilege and honour, but also a huge responsibility.

The album will be played fully live, and the concert will also feature 'Ommadawn Part 1' and 'Hergest Ridge Part 1'.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 25. The full tour dates are as follows:

  • October 31 – Royal Concert Hall Nottingham
  • November 1 – Royal Albert Hall, London
  • November 3 – Birmingham Symphony Hall

A companion album will be released later this year.

Hall Of Fame

An interview with Brian Blessed

Brian Blessed, York, TotalNtertainment, Theatre, Actor

BRIAN Blessed feels as strong and mentally adroit as he did at 20.

“All this old age c**p,” says the 82-year-old South Yorkshire actor, presenter, writer and adventurer.

“Death does not exist. Life is the last word,” he insists. “Gordon’s alive,” he once famously said in Flash Gordon, and Brian Blessed is very much alive too, soon to head out on the road with his chat show, An Evening With Brian Blessed.

“I do two hours of weights and cycling each day,” he says, ahead of his September 3 show at the Grand Opera House in York. “I train, not because of vanity, but because of the expeditions I still want to do, such as climbing the five great mountains of northern Russia.”

On screen, he has starred in everything from 115 episodes as PC “Fancy” Smith in Z-Cars to Doctor Who, Flash Gordon to Kenneth Branagh’s Shakespeare films. On stage, his credits range from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. His trademark stentorian voice has been put to myriad tasks, from voicing the Peppa Pig character Grampy Rabbit to being a voice download on TomTom’s sat-nav system.

However, there is much more to the life of Brian, and so his anecdotes will take in not only his  hearty, king-sized portrayals on film and television, but also his adventuring,

“The best actors are vagabonds, beggars. It’s a great art, but it’s pretending,” he says. “As Hamlet says, playing is holding up a mirror to nature, to life, but of course climbing Everest or going into space IS life.”

His relish for exploring and mountaineering has led Brian to climb Everest three times without oxygen, undertake an expedition to the jungles of Venezuela and become the oldest man to go to the North Pole on foot.

“But my biggest love is space,” he says. “I’m a fully trained cosmonaut. I trained with NASA and at Space City in Moscow, testing prototype suits with lots of mountaineers and microbiologists on Reunion Island.

“To help the space programme, about seven years ago, we filmed on this volcanic island, simulating climbing the highest mountain on Mars, Olympus Mons.”

Brian says with utter conviction: “I will go into space…because I truly believe we are children of stardust and we can’t keep remaining in the cradle. We have to go out there.

“I meet thousands of children at the National Space Centre at Leicester and they all want to go into space.

“I don’t see barriers. I have great belief that you must fulfil your dreams, you must go for it; don’t let them grind you down. We all have special gifts guarded by a guardian angel, and we must each strive to fulfil our ambitions.”

The best advice Brian took came from Sir John Hunt, leader of the successful 1953 British expedition to Mount Everest. “He said, ‘the greatest danger in life is not taking the adventure’. All kinds of things in life can be your Everest, but take the adventure,” he urges.

The son of a miner at Hickleton Main, brought up in the pit village of Goldthorpe, near Mexborough, Brian has always “taken the adventure”, whether winning a scholarship to study at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School or being president of the Council for National Parks for seven years up to 2007.

He feels his name has been a blessing. “My ancestor was a warrior, very badly wounded at the Battle of Hastings, where William the Conqueror gave him the name Blesse (add an ACUTE),” he reveals.

“I wouldn’t want to have any other name than Blessed. I just think it’s the most perfect name.”

Likewise, Brian could not imagine shaving off his trademark bushy beard. “It must have been when I played Augustus Caesar in I, Claudius in 1976 that I last didn’t have a beard. It’s absolutely me; I’d be lost without it,” he says, recalling his favourite role to boot, before playfully imagining one of the birds nesting by his home thinking “I could imagine nesting in that beard!”.

Brian lives very close to Cobham, in Surrey, where his garden extends to four or five acres. “I love gardening,” he says. “I have a Buddhist garden and an African garden, with figures of a 20ft giraffe, elephants and gorillas. It’s full of birds and bees, as I have beehives too.”

As well as exercising, training his voice and gardening, Brian likes to designate periods of silence in his daily routine. This may surprise you, given how he is associated with having a booming voice, once further strengthened by six weeks of training as an operatic Wagnerian tenor.

“Apparently York University has a Brian Blessed Quiet Room: how delightful,” he says.

It may have been an ironic gesture when the University of York students’ union passed a mandate in January 2011 for a study space to be re-crowned the Brian Blessed Centre for Quiet Study, but Blessed’s good friend Kenneth Branagh is on record as saying “he’s the quietest man I’ve ever met”.

“I’ve always said my biggest joy in life is quiet and meditation,” says Brian.

Please note, An Evening With Brian Blessed “may not be suitable for people of a nervous disposition”, or so the publicity says. “That’s publicity nonsense,” Brian retorts. “I’m not going to make anyone nervous. I’m going to make them happy!”

An Evening With Brian Blessed, Grand Opera House, York, September 3, 7.30pm. Tickets: £26.25 upwards on 0844 871 3024 or at  atgtickets.com/york .

ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (RPO)

As the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) celebrates its seventy-fifth anniversary, its mission to enrich lives through orchestral experiences that are uncompromising in their excellence and inclusive in their appeal, places the RPO at the forefront of music-making in the UK and internationally. Typically performing approximately 200 concerts each season and with a worldwide audience of more than half-a-million people, the Orchestra embraces a broad repertoire that enables it to reach the most diverse audience of any British symphony orchestra. Whilst artistic integrity remains paramount, the RPO is unafraid to push boundaries and is equally at home recording video game, film and television soundtracks and working with pop stars, as it is performing the great symphonic repertoire.

The RPO collaborates with the most inspiring artists and was thrilled to welcome Vasily Petrenko as its new Music Director in August 2021. His appointment stands as a major landmark in the Orchestra’s history, signalling its determination to broaden the audience for orchestral music while enhancing its reputation as one of the world’s most versatile ensembles. Vasily Petrenko made his debut with the RPO at London’s Royal Albert Hall in March 2016 delivering a powerful interpretation of Mahler’s Symphony No.2, ‘Resurrection’. His rapport with the Orchestra’s players has been reaffirmed with subsequent London performances, and forthcoming plans include a series of Mahler’s choral symphonies at the Royal Albert Hall, the great works of English composers at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, and tours to Germany and leading European festivals. Vasily Petrenko joins a roster of titled conductors that includes Pinchas Zukerman (Principal Guest Conductor), Alexander Shelley (Principal Associate Conductor) and Grzegorz Nowak (Permanent Associate Conductor).

In addition to the Orchestra’s annual season of concerts in London’s Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and its home Cadogan Hall, the RPO is a respected cultural ambassador and enjoys a busy schedule of international touring, performing in the world’s great concerts halls and at prestigious international festivals.

The RPO is recognised as being the UK’s most in-demand orchestra, an accolade that would have pleased Sir Thomas Beecham, who founded the RPO in 1946. His mission was to lead a vital revival of UK orchestras after World War II and form an ensemble that comprised the finest musicians in the country. The Orchestra has since attracted a glittering list of principal conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, Walter Weller, André Previn, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yuri Temirkanov, Daniele Gatti and Charles Dutoit.

The RPO aims to place orchestral music at the heart of contemporary society, collaborating with creative partners to foster a deeper engagement with communities to ensure that live orchestral music is accessible to as inclusive and diverse an audience as possible. To achieve this, in 1993 the Orchestra launched RPO Resound, which has grown to become the most innovative and respected orchestral community and education programme in the UK and internationally.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has always been entrepreneurial and in 1986 it was the first UK orchestra to launch its own record label. The RPO has gone on to embrace advances in digital technology and now achieves nearly thirty million downloads of its recorded music each year. The Orchestra is increasingly active online (rpo.co.uk) and on social media (@rpoonline) providing audiences with the opportunity to engage with the RPO and enjoy ‘behind-the-scenes’ insights.

Passion, versatility and uncompromising artistic standards are the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s hallmarks, and as it looks forward to an exciting future with its new Music Director, Vasily Petrenko, it will continue to be recognised as one of the world’s most open-minded, forward-thinking and accessible symphony orchestras.

Tubular Bells Tour – with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra Ft Brian Blessed

brian blessed tour

Tubular Bells – one of the most ground-breaking albums of all time – will be presented live with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra this Autumn. The iconic album will be played in full, as well as Ommadawn Part 1 and Hergest Ridge Part 1.

Actor Brian Blessed OBE will act as compere for the concerts, as well as performing the iconic parts of the Master of Ceremonies and The Caveman.

The trio of shows come ahead of the 50th anniversary of Tubular Bells, with a companion album also set for release later this year.

Conducted and arranged by Simon Dobson, Tubular Bells will be presented in its original glory performed totally live without the use of any stems, with the session band joined by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra; presenting the music in a brand new but faithful way.

The musicians will perform to a stunning visual backdrop that use the latest projection mapping technology.

Simon Dobson comments, “The show will be a glorious technicolour tribute to Tubular Bells, one of the most iconic and seminal albums of all time. We aim to build on the legacy of this incredible music and bring a modern reworking to life with huge musical forces, projection mapping and special guests”.

Producer Martin Gernon comments, “Tubular Bells is one of the most iconic pieces of 20th century British Music. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its launch with this spectacular new show and new recording with the Royal Philharmonic and some of the best session musicians in the UK, is an absolute privilege and honour, but also a huge responsibility. The audience will experience not only incredible music, but accompanying visuals and lighting that will create a feast for the senses. If that was not all, we are delighted that Brian Blessed OBE will be performing the Master of Ceremonies and The Caveman role on both album and live shows, in his own inimitable way. It’s not to be missed.”

Brian Blessed concludes, “I must say it is a great honour to be part of such an iconic work of art. I first became aware of the legendary album in 1973 when I was appearing in “I Claudius” as the Emperor Augustus Caesar for the BBC TV. I must confess I was mesmerised at the time by Mike Oldfield’s creation. I am thrilled to bits to be given the opportunity to work with Simon and the orchestra to bring this wonderful music to life”.
