Cambodia is a great country for an extended visit, but what options are available if you plan to stay long-term? The good news is that it’s very easy to get a long-term visa for Cambodia, and at the moment it’s also easy to stay indefinitely.

If you’re planning to visit Cambodia, you have two visa options.

Cambodia Tourist Visa

The first option is to get a tourist visa. If you’re planning to stay for less than 30 days, then this is the visa you need to get. This visa costs $20 and is either available in advance or on arrival (for most nationalities, including USA and UK). With this visa you are allowed  to extend your stay once for an extra 30 days at a cost of around $45. Your hotel in Cambodia will be able to arrange this for you. If you’re planning to stay for longer than 60 days, then this visa isn’t suitable.

Cambodia Ordinary (Business) Visa

The second option is to get an “Ordinary” visa (formerly known as a business visa).  As with the tourist visa, this is also valid for 30 days, and costs $25. But the beauty of this visa is that it can be extended indefinitely. And the other great thing about it is that you can extend your stay from within the country, so there’s no need to leave. You have the option to extend for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. With the 1 and 3-month options you will only get a single entry visa, which means that if you take a trip out of the country, you’ll need to get a new visa when you return. Much better is to get either a 6-month or 12-month extension, as they will both give you multiple entries, which means you can leave and return as often as you want on the same visa.

Cambodia Visa and Residence: Everything US Citizens Need to Know

Cambodia has made it as simple as possible for foreign tourists, expat professionals, and retirees to visit and live in the “Kingdom of Wonder,” with some of the most flexible visa regulations in the region.

Visitors to Cambodia have two options for obtaining an entry visa: apply for an e-visa online or simply get your visa on arrival at the airport.

For short-term visitors, the e-visa is by far the best option as it can be easily applied for in advance of your travels via the Cambodian government’s dedicated website . They have made it an incredibly simple process where you fill in an online application, pay a $30 visa fee and $7 processing charge, and then within three business days you will receive a 30-day single entry tourist visa.

This is convenient for tourists, but if you are planning to stay in Cambodia for longer than 30 days then you should instead get a visa on arrival.

The visa on arrival process is almost as straightforward as the e-visa option but is done in person at immigration when you arrive in Cambodia’s international airports of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville .

The requirements are very clear and all you need is a passport that’s valid for at least six months and has a spare page to receive a full-page visa, as well as two passport-sized photos. You will also be asked to fill in a short immigration form that will be provided to you at the airport.

Once the immigration officers confirm you have met these requirements you will need to make it clear what type of visa you’re looking for. There are currently two visa options available:

A single-entry tourist visa valid for 30 days for a fee of $30, which can be given a one-time extension for a maximum of 30 days at a cost of $45.

An “ordinary” or “business” visa valid for 30 days for a fee of $35, which can be further extended on an ongoing basis.

Because the ordinary/business visa can be extended almost indefinitely it makes it the option most suitable for expats.

The process of extending your visa is even more convenient than the already simple process of obtaining the visa in the first place. All you need to do is visit a travel agency, provide them with your passport, and to select one of the following extension and fee options:

One Month Single Entry Visa Extension for a $45 fee

Three Month Single Entry Visa Extension for a $75 fee

Six Month Multiple Entry Visa Extension for a $150 fee

12 Month Multiple Entry Visa Extension for a $285 fee

It should be noted that the one- and three-month options do not permit you to leave the country, while the six- and 12-month options allow you to go back and forth as often as you like. Also, each visa extension takes up an entire page in your passport, so you should aim to get the longest visa extension possible.

The travel agency handles all the arrangements and will usually be able to get your visa extended within one to three business days. All you have to do is make sure your passport still has spare pages for the new visa extension stamp as well as more than six months’ validity.

Once your passport is returned to you with the 12-month extension then you are free to live anywhere you wish in Cambodia and you can leave and re-enter the country as many times as you like with no further requirements or additional paperwork necessary. You are completely set for an entire year and when the 12 months is up all you have to do is visit your local travel agent and ask them to arrange a new extension for you.

Visas for Cambodia

As you're no doubt aware, it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain the relevant visas for many countries around the world — whether travelling or relocating. Fortunately, however, Cambodia still has relatively relaxed visa regulations and requirements for most holidaymakers and expats. So long as you follow the rules, you should have no problem staying in the Kingdom of Wonder for a significant period of time.

Unless you are a citizen of one of the 10 Asean countries, you will need a visa to stay in Cambodia. However, if you are from any of these countries, you are exempted from the visa obligation for stays of between 21 and 30 days.

Nationals from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Sudan are required to apply for a visa at a Cambodian embassy or consulate in their home country before travelling to Cambodia.

Tourist visa

Citizens from all other countries are eligible for a visa-on-arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, and Sihanoukville International Airport, and most international border checkpoints. However, If you'd rather get your visa in advance to avoid queues on arrival, the Royal Government of Cambodia has recently approved e-visas, which are valid for single-entry tourist trips up to 30 days. You simply need to complete the online application form , upload a recent passport photo of yourself in JPEG/ PNG format, then make the necessary payment by credit card.

If you obtain your visa online, you can enter and exit Cambodia by air via Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, or Sihanoukville International Airport, or cross overland at Bavet International Border Checkpoint in Svay Rieng, Poipet International Border Checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey or Cham Yeam International Border Checkpoint in Koh Kong.

Business (ordinary) visa

If you want to stay longer in Cambodia you need to come in on an Ordinary visa, valid for 30 days, and extend it with one of four Extensions of Stay (EOS).

EB - Business EOS - Extend your visa within 30 days for an EB extension for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. Present a letter from your employer with letterhead and official stamp.

ER - Retirement EOS - Extend your visa within 30 days for an ER extension for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. If you are 55 or older, no need for documents. If you are under 55 you need proof of retirement and sometimes proof of income from abroad.

EG - General EOS - Extend your visa within 30 days for an EG extension for max. 6 months, when you are searching for a job or want to start your own business. No documentation needed. If a job is found, change the EOS for an EB. If no job has been found, you will have to leave the country after 6 months, but can come back.

ES - Student EOS - Extend your visa within 30 days for an ES extension for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. You need proof of enlisting in a registered educational institute.

For EB extension holders: You will also need a work permit. You can do this yourself online or let an agent do it. Work permits cost $100 for a full calendar year and have to be applied for in the first 4 months of the year. The employer needs to have you registered in his quota for foreign workers.

Costs and requirements

Visa fees, conditions and photograph requirements are all subject to change, so be sure to check at your nearest Cambodian embassy for the latest information, or visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation 's website to find out how to apply for an e-visa if this is of interest to you.

The cost of a single-entry tourist visa (T) is currently US$30, while the cost of a single-entry business visa (E) is US$35.

To apply for a visa-on-arrival, you will need the following documents, as well as the visa fee:

a passport that is valid for at least six months from your date of arrival

a recent passport-sized photo in colour

a completed application form that specifies the purpose of your stay

Validity and extensions

Your original visa will be valid for 30 days from your date of entry into Cambodia, but both tourists and businessmen are eligible to extend their visa. The single-entry tourist visa can be extended only once for a maximum of one month; but a business visa can be extended for one month (single-entry), three months (single-entry), six months (multiple-entries) or one year (multiple-entries).

Do be warned that if you overstay the validity term of your visa, you will need to pay a fine of U$10 per day. There is no limit to this fine, but if you overstay your visa for more than 30 days, you could even be detained and deported in addition to paying the fine.

Do also be aware that, as of September 2017, it is now compulsory for all foreigners to obtain a valid work permit and employment card in order to apply for a six-month or one-year extension to their business visa. Currently, it costs US$50 for a one-month business visa extension, US$80 for a three-month extension, US$160 for a six-month extension, and US$290 for a one-year extension, when purchased through an agent.

Visas officially need to be extended at the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh, but you can simplify the process by enlisting the services of a local agent. Extension fees can be less if you deal directly with the Department of Immigration, but this can be a more time consuming and frustrating process, so it's often worth going through an agent instead.

If you wish to change your visa from a tourist to a business visa, you will need to leave the country and re-enter on a new visa.

Cambodia is currently one of the most open and visitor-friendly countries in Southeast Asia following COVID-19 travel restrictions.

As of 17 March 2022, visa-on-arrival has been reinstated for most visitors and all COVID-19 travel-related testing requirements have been lifted.

Do I need a visa to visit Cambodia?

The simple answer is yes: most nationalities need a visa to enter the Kingdom of Cambodia, including citizens of Australia, the European Union, the UK and the US. The main exceptions are citizens from the Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) neighbors who are granted visa-free access; these countries include Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Some other Asian nationalities, including Japan and South Korea, may also enter Cambodia without a visa in most circumstances. Citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Sudan need to make advance arrangements for a Cambodian visa.

A 1-month tourist visa costs US$30; easily extendable business visas cost US$35. Online tourist e-visas cost US$36, which includes a US$6 processing charge.

Do I need a photograph?

Photos are no longer required with visas for those arriving at airports, although some land crossings still require them and charge US$2–3 if you do not have one.

What about visas during the time of COVID-19?

Cambodia suspended its visa-on-arrival program in June 2020 but made the bold decision to reinstate it with immediate effect from 17 March 2022. It is also possible to apply for a Cambodian e-visa online .

What you need to know when for applying for a Cambodian visa

• Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your planned entry or you won’t be allowed to enter the country.
• Cambodian visas take up an entire passport page – unless you are entering on a tourist e-visa, which takes up about a quarter-page.

Are there any special entry requirements related to COVID-19?

Cambodia blew the doors off quarantined Southeast Asia on November 15, 2021, when the government announced an unexpected total reopening for fully vaccinated travelers. Some pre-departure and arrival testing remained in place until recently but the requirement for COVID-19 travel testing was lifted in a bold move towards normality from March 2022. Visitors are free to travel anywhere in Cambodia without the need to quarantine and there are no curfews in place anywhere in the country.

Unvaccinated travelers are still required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in a pre-booked hotel or a designated government facility. 

Can I extend my Cambodian visa?

Those seeking work in Cambodia should opt for a business visa, as it is easily extendable for longer periods, including multiple entries and exits. A tourist visa can be extended only once and only for 1 month and does not allow for re-entry. Overstaying a visa currently costs US$10 a day.

Visa extensions are issued at the large immigration office located directly across the road from Phnom Penh International Airport. Extensions are easy to arrange, taking just a couple of days. The cost is US$45 for 1 month (for both tourist and business visas), US$75 for 3 months, US$155 for 6 months and US$285 for 1 year. Some hotels and travel agents in Phnom Penh can help with arrangements for a small fee.

Where can I enter Cambodia?

Cambodia has three international gateways for arrival by air – Phnom Penh , Siem Reap and Sihanoukville – and a large number of land borders with neighboring Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. Formalities at Cambodia’s international airports are generally smooth.

Crossing at land borders is usually easy as well, though immigration officers may try to extract some extra cash, either for the visa itself or via some other scam. Crossing from Thailand, immigration officials may demand payment in baht and round up the exchange rate considerably in their favor. Overcharging is also an issue at the Laos border, but not usually a problem at Vietnam borders. Arranging an e-visa in advance can help avoid any hassles or surcharges.

Departure from Cambodia during COVID-19

You do not need a PCR test to leave Cambodia, though you should check whether a “Fit-to-Fly” PCR test or rapid antigen is required for your onward stop, whether a stay in another country, transit through another country or return to your home country.

There are currently COVID-19 testing labs in several cities around Cambodia, including multiple testing labs in Phnom Penh, one lab in Siem Reap, one lab in Sihanoukville and one lab in Battambang . In practice, it is easiest to work with the labs in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, so we recommend making one of these cities your departure destination from Cambodia if a Fit-to-Fly certificate is required.

Visa Requirements for Cambodia

Any trip through Southeast Asia almost always includes a stop in Cambodia to visit the legendary temples of Angkor Wat , but to get there, you'll likely need a visa to enter the country. A visa is required for almost all foreign nationals coming into Cambodia, except for citizens of the neighboring countries Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar, and the Philippines.

Luckily, Cambodia offers an easy-to-obtain e-visa for tourists that you can apply for and download online. The e-visa allows visitors to enter the country one time for a period of up to 30 days , so if you plan to leave Cambodia and come back, you'll need to apply for an additional visa.

If you don't have time to apply for the e-visa—it can take up to three business days for processing—you can also get a visa on arrival when you arrive at the airport or cross the border from a neighboring country. Visas on arrival are also available for business travelers and individuals with Cambodian ancestry.

Tourist e-Visa

Without a doubt, the easiest way to enter Cambodia as a tourist is by applying online for the e-visa, known as the T class visa. It's a simple process that takes a few minutes to complete and while it can take up to three business days to be processed, most applicants receive their visas via email within 24 hours. In fact, the most complicated part is finding the official Cambodian visa webpage , since a Google search brings up several results for third-party companies that take more time and charge more money for the same visa (it can also be done via an app on your Apple or Android smartphone). If you're paying more than $36, you're on the wrong webpage.

Tourist visas allow visitors to enter the country once and stay for up to 30 days. They cannot be renewed, so you'll need to leave the country and apply for a new visa if you want to stay.

Visa Fees and Application

Once you're on the Cambodian visa webpage, the application itself is easy to fill out and very straightforward. Apart from entering your personal information on your passport, there are only a few other things you'll need.

• You'll need to upload a digital photo or scan of your passport as well as a digital photo of yourself on a neutral background. In both cases, a photo taken with your cellphone usually works.
• You'll also need to choose your port of entry, which is likely either the Siem Reap Airport or Phnom Penh Airport.
• If you'll be crossing via land from Thailand, Vietnam, or Laos, you'll have to choose the border crossing checkpoint you plan to use, since the visa is only valid for the crossing you indicate in the application.
• The standard visa fee of $30 is payable at the time of application, plus a $6 processing fee.
• Even though it's a little more expensive and you could save $6 by getting the visa on arrival, immigration is notoriously slow and you could be waiting for hours until you're allowed to pass through. The e-visa streamlines the process and is well worth the small additional fee.
• Most applicants are emailed their visas within 24 hours of submitting the application, although it can take up to three business days.
• When you get the email with your visa, it will instruct you to print two copies. You'll need one for entering Cambodia and another one for leaving, so don't overlook it.

Tourist Visa on Arrival

Tourist visas, or T class visas, can also be obtained on arrival in Cambodia. It's slightly cheaper than applying for the e-visa, but long lines and sluggish processing for visas on arrival are the norm, so the e-visa is usually your best bet. If you need to get to Cambodia in a hurry and don't have time to wait for the e-visa (it usually takes under 24 hours to process but can take up to three business days), then the visa on arrival is a convenient fallback.

E-visas are accepted at all of the airports in Cambodia, but not at every land border crossing . If you are crossing the border in a vehicle from Thailand, Vietnam, or Laos, you should confirm that your port of entry accepts e-visas ; if they don't, you'll need to request the visa on arrival.

The visa application is nearly identical to the e-visa, but you'll download and print the form instead of filling it out online.

• Apart from the application, you'll need your passport and a physical passport photo, so make sure you have one before landing in Cambodia.
• The visa fee is $30 which must be paid in cash in U.S. dollars. Try to have the exact amount on hand, because it's unlikely you'll get change back. The airports have ATMs available but they don't always have cash available, so don't rely on them.
• If you're crossing at a land border, expect to pay another $1–$20 in "fees" to the immigration official. There's no official listing of land crossing fees, but since the official has the authority to deny your entry, your only option is to pay it.

Business/Ordinary Visa

For anyone who wants to stay in Cambodia long-term, you'll need to apply for an E class visa (not to be confused with the electronic "e-visa"). E class visas are also referred to as "business visas" or "ordinary visas," and they allow the holder to stay in Cambodia for extended periods of time. Ordinary visas initially last for 30 days, but can be extended once you're in the country for up to 12 months at a time.

There are four types of ordinary visa extensions: one for workers (class EB), one for people seeking employment (class EG), one for students (class ES), and one for retirees (class ER).

The ordinary/business visa is a visa on arrival (you cannot get one electronically before arriving). Make sure you have a filled out application , passport photo, and $35 in U.S. dollars. The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days, so you'll need to apply for the appropriate visa extension if you plan to stay longer. Visa extensions are granted for up to 12 months at a time, and only the six-month or 12-month extensions allow holders to leave and re-enter Cambodia.

• Workers (EB Extension) : This extension is for those who are working, volunteering, or freelancing in Cambodia plus their immediate family members. You'll need a letter of employment from a Cambodian company or a letter stating you're self-employed with an official government stamp. Family members will have to show documents that prove the relation between them and the sponsor. This visa allows workers to live in Cambodia, but you'll still need a valid work permit to legally have a job in Cambodia.
• Employment Seekers (EG Extension) : If you're looking for work in Cambodia, the EG extension lets you have up to six months to find a job and then convert the EG extension into an EB extension.
• Students (ES Extension) : Essentially a student visa, you'll need to show a letter of acceptance into a Cambodian education program, plus proof of sufficient funds to support yourself.
• Retirees (ER Extension) : Retired individuals who want to live in Cambodia can apply for the ER extension if they are over 55 and have proof of sufficient funds to live.

The extension must be applied for within 30 days of arrival and before your visa expires. The official way to do it is to visit the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh, which is next to the airport. The fees for the extension seem to vary arbitrarily, depending on the type of extension, the length of stay, and the official who helps you. For an extra fee, there are agencies all over the country who will submit the paperwork for you.

The Khmer visa, or K class visa, is a special lifetime visa for individuals with a family relation to Cambodia, typically the children of Cambodian emigrants. This is also a visa on arrival and you'll need the completed application form , your current passport, and a passport photo as well. Officially, you'll also need documentation that proves Cambodian ancestry, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or a photocopy of a Cambodian parent's passport. Unofficially, people have been able to get the Khmer visa by showing identification with a Cambodian last name and speaking the language.

The Khmer visa should be free of charge to eligible applicants, but immigration officials sometimes charge a "facilitation fee."

Visa Overstays

The penalty for overstaying your visa is a fee of $10 per day, for up to 30 days. Although you should never overstay a visa, if you need to stay longer by just a couple of days, the truth is that it's likely easier and less expensive to overstay your visa than to request an extension.

After 30 days, however, the penalties drastically increase. In addition to being liable for the mounting fees, you'll also risk imprisonment, immediate deportation, and a possible ban on being able to return to Cambodia.

Extending Your Visa

If you have a tourist visa—obtained electronically or on arrival—you are allowed to extend it one time for an additional 30 days. Just like requesting an extension to an ordinary/business visa, you can request the tourist extension in person at the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh or hire an agency to submit the paperwork for you. As with the ordinary visa, the fee for requesting an extension can vary, but it's usually between $30 and $50.

Cambodia Tourist Visa Requirements

The following are the basic requirements for Cambodia sticker visa applicants:

The applicant should hold a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry in Cambodia.

A Cambodian visa is required for almost all foreign nationalities visiting Cambodia. Usually it’s quite easy to obtain a visa, but please read the following information carefully before planning your trip to Cambodia. Passport and Visa Requirements

You need an international passport, issued by your country and valid for at least six months starting from the entry date in Cambodia. You’ll also need one passport-size photograph, taken no more then 12 months ago.

The nationals of Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar do not need a tourist visa and may stay in Cambodia for between 14 and 30 days. More information here .

Visa Types and Fees

Cambodia offers several visa types to visitors of the country, from which the tourist and business visa are the most common ones.

Tourist (T) Visa

A tourist visa (T-type) costs US$30 and is valid for 30 days. Tourist visas can be extended 1 time for an extra period of 30 days. Several travel agents in town offer the visa extension service, which normally costs around $50 including service fee.

Ordinary (E) Visa

An ordinary visa (E-type), often referred to as a business visa , costs US$35 and is valid for 30 days. This visa can be extended indefinitely for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 1 year at a time, 6 and 12 month visas allow the holder multiple entries into Cambodia. If you have a 1 or 3 month visa and you leave Cambodia, your visa becomes void and you will need a new one if you re-enter Cambodia. Prices to extend range from $50 for a 1 month extension to $290 for a 1 year extension.

Since August 2016, the following extensions of stay are available for the E-type visa: EB (business), EG (general), ER (retirement), ES (student), ET (technician), EP (proposal). Most foreigners who intend to stay long term in Cambodia apply for the EB type visa. If you are aged above 55 years old and have no intention to work, then you can also apply for the ER (retirement) visa.

Khmer (K) Visa

The K-type visa can only be given to Cambodian descendants that enter Cambodia with a foreign passport. They need to have valid documents to show that one or both of their parents are Cambodian citizens. The K-visa will be issued one time and is free of charge. The visa will allow the applicants to enter the Cambodian kingdom an unlimited number of times.

Diplomatic (A), Official (B) and Courtesy (C) Visa

Diplomatic, Official and Courtesy visas are provided for free, but you will have to meet very specific requirements for these visa types.

Applying for a Cambodian Visa

Most people apply for a visa on arrival in Cambodia. However, it’s also possible to obtain a visa beforehand by applying for it online or by contacting an overseas Cambodian embassy.

Visa on Arrival

A Cambodian visa on arrival can be purchased on entering the country, either at one of the international airports or at one of the official checkpoints when crossing the border by land.

There are currently only two international airports in Cambodia, one in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh and one in Siem Reap. Cambodian visas are available at both of these airports.

If you are entering Cambodia by land, you can apply for a visa at one of the official checkpoints. These checkpoints are available at the following border crossings:

• Border crossings with Thailand: Poipet, Cham Yeam (Koh Kong), O’Smach
• Border crossings with Vietnam: Bavet, Kha Orm Sam Nor
• Border crossing with Laos: Dom Kralor

The Poipet border crossing:  Since most tourists coming from Thailand pass by the Poipet border crossing, queues can sometimes get very long. Try to arrive early morning at the border, lunch time is very busy and avoid weekends if you don’t want to lose time. Good to know: When you apply for a visa on arrival in Cambodia and fail to provide the required photograph, the official will usually charge you US$1 extra on top of the applicable visa fee. Additionally, when you apply for a visa on arrival at overland borders, expect to pay an extra couple of dollars on top of the advertised fee.

Online: e-Visa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has established a system to process an online visa for Cambodia, called the e-Visa . You will have to complete the online application and provide a scan of your passport and photo (4×6). You will have to pay US$35 by credit card (US$30 for the visa and US$5 processing charge). The processing time will take 3 days and it permits you to stay for 30 days in Cambodia. It is valid for 3 months from the issuing date. The visa gets issued to your email, it’s your responsibility to print it.

You can enter Cambodia with an e-Visa via the following international airports and overland border crossings:

• Siem Reap – Angkor International Airport
• Phnom Penh International Airport
• Border crossings with Thailand: Poipet, Cham Yeam (Koh Kong)
• Border crossing with Vietnam: Bavet

You can apply for the e-Visa on the following website: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/ . Make sure to read the latest e-Visa requirements carefully since they change regularly.

Not supported countries: If you are a citizen of one of the following countries, then you will not be able to apply for an e-Visa: Afghanistan, Algeria, Arab Saudi, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Nigeria. Please research if you can apply for a visa on arrival or contact the nearest Cambodian embassy.

Cambodian Embassies

A third way to obtain a visa is through one of the overseas Cambodian embassies. Check the following list of Cambodian embassies to see if there’s one available in your country.

Visa Documents

The following 3 documents have to be filled in when you apply for a visa on arrival. It doesn’t matter if you arrive by air or land. Make sure you indicate clearly for which visa you are applying. It’s impossible to change a tourist visa into a business visa afterwards.

• Visa Application
• Customs declaration
• Arrival/departure card

Visa Extensions

If you want to stay longer than 30 days in Cambodia, you will have to extend your visa at the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh. Their offices are located on Nr 223, Confederation de Russie (Airport Road), opposite the Phnom Penh International Airport. Contact them by phone on +855 12 581 558.

However, when you stay in Siem Reap or another city, you don’t need to travel to Phnom Penh. You can just ask a local travel agency to take care of the extension. They will charge you a fee for the extension and you may have to provide them with a passport-size photograph (4×6). You will have your passport and visa extension back in about 10 working days.

A diplomatic, official and courtesy visas can be extended at the Consular Department, Ministry of Foreign Affaires and International Cooperation in Phnom Penh.

Good to know: If you overstay your visa, you will have to pay US$10 a day as a penalty on leaving the country.

Beware of visa scams at all overland border crossings, but especially at Poipet and Koh Kong. Never let somebody else arrange a visa for you. The visa application is very easy and only costs $US30 for a tourist visa. Do not listen to drivers and touts who will offer their help and make you believe that a visa costs US$40 or more.

Some immigration officials will ask a 100 Baht surcharge at the Poipet immigration office. 100 Baht is more or less US$3. Decide for yourself if you are willing to pay this extra ‘bribe’ or not. To avoid it, you could ask them in a polite way for a receipt or explanation. However, never lose your good mood or show any anger. This can only give you extra hassle.

We are arriving at Siem Reap and will have tourist visas for 30 days but our stay exceeds this and we will need an extension. Can this only be done at Phnom Penh or is there a possibility of extending when we are in Siem Reap? Getting an agent to arrange this for us will not be possible as we cannot be without our passports.

To apply for a visa to Cambodia, it is essential to understand the legal policies and regulations related to visas. Failure to comply with these policies can lead to application rejection or legal consequences.

Aside from its popular tourist destinations, Cambodia has also become one of the world’s best countries for retirement and relocation. One of the main reasons behind this is the easy visa application process compared to other South-east Asian countries.

Immigration Laws in Cambodia 

Travellers should be aware of the immigration laws in Cambodia to avoid any legal problems during their stay. These laws include restrictions on employment, customs regulations, and penalties for breaking the law. It is crucial to comply with these regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to Cambodia. Do I need a Cambodian visa?

To enter the Kingdom of Cambodia, a passport which has a validity of no less than six (6) months is required as well as a valid visa (except for certain nationalities), including for children. 

Visa exemption is given if you hold a passport from countries that are members of ASEAN . These countries are Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand . You will be allowed to enter Cambodia visa free for a period of 14-30 days . However, if you plan to stay longer, you will be required to exit the country and seek an appropriate visa.

Passport holders from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Nigeria, or Sri Lanka are not eligible to acquire neither a visa online nor visa-on-arrival in Cambodia. Thus, applying for a Cambodian visa in advance can only be done through the nearest Cambodian Embassy. It is important to first contact the Embassy for the requirements as they are more exigent to African and Middle-east countries. 

The Kingdom also offers a more convenient way to apply for a visa. On January 2023, Cambodia E-Visa announced that online application for “Visa Type E” is now available for all countries!

Types of Visas in Cambodia

• Tourist or T-class Visa – This is a type of visa that allows foreigners to stay for at least 30 days. It is a single-entry visa which means leaving the country will forfeit its validity. The tourist visa can only be renewed once for an extension of additional 30 days. Beyond that, tourist visa holders must leave the country and re-enter with a new visa.
• Business or E-class Visa – This type of visa allows foreigners to stay for 30 days for business / work purposes. Business visas can be renewed for unlimited times unlike tourist visas. It can be extended for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 12 months.
• K-class Visa – This type of visa is only issued to Cambodian Nationals entering the country with a foreign passport. It is a lifetime visa that allows multiple entries. The K-class visa requires proof of Khmer parentage, Khmer surname, and facilitation fee.
• B-class Visa – It is a type of visa that is only issued to employees of international NGOs with a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia. The B-class visa is valid for three months and is renewable for up to twelve months. The length of stay depends on the length of the contract with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
• Transit or D-class Visa – This is a type of visa that is valid for just 3 days. Transit visa is issued upon arrival with a requirement of proof of intention for the short visit or stay.

What type of visa should I get?

Staying in Cambodia for short-term – The Tourist or T-class Visa is best applicable for foreigners who intend to stay for less than 2 months. It has a maximum validity of 90 days. Beyond that, tourist visa holders must leave the country otherwise their stay is considered illegal. 

Staying in Cambodia for long-term – Business or E-class visa is pertinent to those who have found a reason to stay longer in Cambodia, for instance employment or education. It can be renewed multiple times for one month, three months, six months, or one year.

Other common purposes for staying in Cambodia

Attending a sports event or competition.

• You can apply for a tourist visa to attend a sports event or a competition.

Travelling For Medical Purposes?

• For medical purposes, you can apply Evisa for Cambodia visit.

Have A Sponsor Or Guarantor?

• There’s no specific category for Cambodian visas applicable to religious workers.

Freelance Worker Or Digital Nomad?

Researchers Or Academics In Cambodia?

• Researchers must have an ES visa. It can be extended upto 1, 3, 6, or 12 months.

Attending Conferences Or Events In Cambodia?

• To attend conferences or events, you need to get a Business (E) visa to enter Cambodia.

Children Travelling To Cambodia?

• All the children who are non-Cambodians must apply for the E-class visa.
• If a child has one Cambodian parent in that case they can apply for a free K-class visa.

Journalist Visa In Cambodia?

• Standard Visa for Business. 
• An employee of Overseas Newspaper, news agencies or Broadcasting organizations.

Volunteers in Cambodia?

• If you’re volunteering for less than a month, simply go for visa-type- T (tourist visa), and if the volunteering stay is over two months, you need to apply for employment (visa type E).

Students Studying In Cambodia?

• Students trying to obtain a student visa at Cambodia for the University Of Cambodia (UOC), Panyastra University Of Cambodia, or any other university must provide an acceptance letter confirming that the student has been provided with a place of study at the educational institution.
• Besides this student must also have an ES visa extension that can be extended upto 1, 3, 6, or 12 months.

Documentary Production In Cambodia?

• For documentary production, you need to apply for a type of visa in Cambodia which can be obtained upon arrival.
• Ensure that your passport at the time of arrival must have a validity of 6 months.
• If the stay is of one month, the tourist visa is enough. If it’s more than one month, apply for the Business K-visa, which can be extended up to a year.

How to Apply for a Cambodian Visa

Upon arrival at Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville airport, you can immediately apply and obtain a tourist or business visa. With complete documents or requirements, the process can only take 20 to 30 minutes. It can also be applied in all major land borders or seaports in between countries.

Visa-On-Arrival Requirements

• Passport (At least 6 months valid with at least one full page for the visa stamp)
• Two recent passport-sized photos (USD $2 charge if you don’t have)
• USD $30 (Tourist visa) $35 (Business visa) in cash
• Filled visa application form (available upon arrival)

Visa-On-Arrival Procedures and Processing Time

• Application form is available on the Visa counter. 
• Fill up the visa application form. 
• Submit the accomplished form with your passport and photos.
• Pay the visa application fee.
• Processing time may take about 20 to 30 minutes. It may take longer at land border crossings and seaports.

To avoid spending time applying for a visa on arrival, you can arrange it before traveling. In your home country, a tourist visa can be obtained at the Embassy or Consulate of Cambodia.

Visa from a Cambodian Embassy Requirements

• Two recent passport-sized photos
• Visa application fee (visa fees may vary for each country)

The procedures and processing time may vary for each country. Some countries do not have an Embassy of Cambodia. The Embassy Worldwide has a complete list of all the Cambodian Embassies in the world.

Getting an E-Visa (Electronic Visa)

This is an online visa processing service for tourist visas only. It can be applied through the websites of Cambodia Immigration , Ministry of Foreign Affairs , and eVisa Cambodia. Visa Type T (Tourist visa) and Visa Type E (Business visa) are available for online application. Read: E-Visa To Cambodia Now Available Online

Online e-Visa Application Requirements

• Soft copy of a recent passport photo in JPG/PNG format
• Soft copy of the passport photo page (passport must be valid for at least 6 months)
• Filled online application form
• Debit or Credit Card for paying $35 fee

Online e-Visa Procedures and Processing Time

• Fill out the online application form.
• Pay and fill the necessary card information.
• Submit the application form and wait for the confirmation via email.
• Normal processing duration can take 3 business days. After 3 days, the e-Visa will be sent via email.
• Print out the e-Visa and present it upon arrival in Cambodia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a list of the port of entries in Cambodia that supports e-Visa.

The online process of tourist visa comes with fast processing services with a corresponding additional fee. It has an “Urgent Service” that takes 24 hours for $79 USD. The “Super Urgent Service” is guaranteed within 5 business hours for $99 USD.

Health Requirements For Visa Application In Cambodia

Providing details about health requirements for visa application in Cambodia, such as the need for vaccination certificates or medical checkups, can help travellers prepare for their trip and minimise the possibility of encountering health concerns.

Exit Visa for Cambodia:

Travellers leaving Cambodia do not need an exit visa. However, it is essential to have all required travel documents, including a valid passport and relevant visas for the destination country. Complying with customs and immigration regulations is also crucial to avoid any complications during departure.

How do I apply for a visa extension?

Once you have acquired either a tourist or business visa, you already have a legal stay of 30 days in Cambodia. After that, a renewal and extension of visa should be applied.

Renewing a tourist visa can only be done once for an extended stay of 30 days. It is also a single-entry type of visa extension. Business visas, on the other hand, can be renewed indefinitely for up to 12 months. 

The renewal of business visas includes an extension of 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months. Extending it for 1 or 3 months will give you a single-entry type visa. Meanwhile, the extension of 6 and 12 months are multiple-entry visas.

There are Four types of Business or E-class Visa Extensions to which you can choose from:

It is advisable to renew a Cambodian visa ahead of the visa expiration date. The renewal process may take approximately 3 to 5 business days. So, the extension of visa must be done 5 days before it expires. 

There are two ways to which you can extend a Cambodian visa:

1. Extending Visa at the Department of Immigration Before going to the Department of Immigration, it is important to know everything about the office. From where it is to what time and days are they operational. In getting there, you can take different modes of public transportation like tuk-tuk, taxi, or bus.  Department of Immigration Office Days: Monday to Friday (closed on Holidays) Office Hours: 7:30-11:30 AM, 2:30-5:30 PM Address: 332 Russian Federation Blvd. (110), Phnom Penh, Cambodia [ map ] Telephone: + 855 (0) 23 890 380

The paperwork and release of passport and visa extension usually occur in the afternoon. 

In extending a visa, you will only need to present the requirements and pay for the extension fee to the consular officers. Once collected, you will be given a receipt and a temporary ID which contains the pick-up date.

2. Using a Licensed Travel Agency

Extending a visa through a travel agency is the most convenient method. The only thing that you need to do is to provide them the requirements needed. After that, they will do all the work to extend your stay.

The extension of stay can only be processed at the Cambodian Immigration in Phnom Penh. So, this option also suits those who are staying in other cities and provinces in Cambodia. However, this method may take longer as it requires sending your passport to Phnom Penh. 

Travel agencies also require a more expensive service charge than doing it yourself. In general, these are the approximate fees charged by a travel agency or the Cambodian Immigration. 

Failing to extend a visa and staying beyond the validity of stay is considered illegal in Cambodia. But, it will be legal once you declare it at the Cambodian Immigration and pay $10 USD for each day that you plan to stay. 

Overstaying legally is possible for a maximum of 30 days. After that, paying a $10 cost may still be applicable, however, with an impending risk of deportation or a future ban of entering Cambodia. On the other hand, illegal overstaying is subject to paying a higher fee or imprisonment.

Things To Keep In Mind Before Applying Visa To Cambodia

Travellers to Cambodia should be aware of the local currency, including the exchange rate, acceptable forms of payment, and where to exchange money. This information can help travellers prepare financially and avoid confusion or inconvenience during their trip.

Transportation Information: 

Travelers need to have information on transportation options in Cambodia, including public transportation, taxis, or car rentals. This can help them plan they’re itinerary and get around the country more easily.

Accommodation Options: 

Travelers to Cambodia should be aware of the various accommodation options available, such as hotels, guesthouses, or homestays. Knowing these available Cambodia property options can help to choose the best property as per budget & preferences.

Tourist Attractions: 

Cambodia has many popular tourist attractions, including temples, beaches, and national parks. Travelers should know these attractions to plan they’re itinerary and make the most of their stay in the country.

Travel Insurance: 

Travelers need to have travel insurance, especially for medical emergencies, accidents, or trip cancellations. Travel insurance can help travelers prepare for unexpected events and avoid any financial losses during their trip.

Can I get a multiple-entry visa for Cambodia?

Yes, you can get a multiple-entry visa for Cambodia only if you extend it for 6-12 months.

Can I apply for a retirement visa in Cambodia?

Yes, you can apply for a retirement visa in Cambodia through ER visa extension only if you’re above the age of 55 and have enough funds to support yourself.

Can I change my visa type while in Cambodia?

No, you can’t change your visa type while you’re in Cambodia.

When a foreigner wishes to enter Cambodia, whether it is for tourism, study or business, it is a requirement that valid visas must be secured.

Let’s take a look at the different types of visas in Cambodia.

Types of visas in Cambodia

There are five types of visas foreigners can obtain in Cambodia, which include:

Tourist visa (T-class)

Ordinary visa (e-class).

• Khmer visa (K-class)

Official visa (B-class)

Courtesy visa (c-class).

The tourist visa (T-class) is issued to foreigners who will be staying in Cambodia for 30 days or less.

The tourist visa can be obtained in advance or on arrival which you get at the airport. The visa is only available for single-entries but can be renewed for an additional 30 days. After the extended 30 days, the visa holder will have to leave Cambodia and obtain a new visa to revisit.

Foreigners who are staying in Cambodia for an extended period of time may consider applying for the ordinary visa (E-class).

Ordinary visas are also valid for 30 days. However, the ordinary can be extended endlessly for one month, three months, six months or one year. If you hold the 1- and 3-month visa and leave Cambodia, your visa will be invalid, and you have to apply for a new visa to re-enter, but with the 6-month and 1-year visa, you are allowed multiple entries into Cambodia.

There are four types of extensions for the E-class visa, which are:

EB (business visa extension)

Eg (general visa extension), er (retirement visa extension), es (student visa extension).

The EB visa extension is issued to foreigners who plan to work in Cambodia.

The visa covers:

• Foreigners who are working in Cambodia
• Foreigners who want to start a business
• Freelancers
• Foreigners’ spouse and children

Even though the foreigner has obtained the EB visa extension, it does not guarantee that the foreigner can work in Cambodia. Work permits and foreign employment cards must also be secured to work in Cambodia legally.

Spouses and children of the EB visa holders can submit the visa holder’s employment letter stating that the company supports the spouse’s EB application as a non-working dependent.

Self-employed foreigners and those who have a registered business in Cambodia can write a letter confirming their employment which must be stamped with a business stamp.

Documents needed to apply for an EB visa extension are:

• Passport photo
• Address in Cambodia
• Employment contract or proof of business
• Health insurance

During the first six months or one year, you can apply for the EB visa without a work permit, in case you are still looking for work. However, you will need to submit your work permit or proof of business when it is the second six months or one year.

Work permit and employment card application

The work permit is issued by the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MOLVT). The permit is valid for one year; however, it is only valid until 31 December of the year it was issued.

Work permits must be renewed within 1 January and 31 March, and late renewals are subject to penalties which start on 1 April.

The employment card contains the employment history of the foreigner in Cambodia. The card is valid for one year and must be renewed before 31 March.

Applications can be made online through the MOLVT Foreign Workers Centralised Management System . Individuals who need help with the application may engage with the services of Acclime.

The EG extension is issued to foreigners who are seeking jobs in Cambodia and is valid for 1, 3 or 6 months.

The retirement extension is issued to foreigners of retirement age who have proof of retirement in their home country, such as pensions or social security. The retirement extension is only available to foreigners aged 55 or above who can financially support themselves.

The ER retirement visa extension can be issued for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.

The ES student visa extension is issued to students who intend to study in Cambodia. Students who are applying for this visa extension must provide a letter from the Cambodian school and have evidence of funds to support themselves.

The ES student visa can be issued for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.

Khmer (K-class)

The Khmer (K-class) visas are issued to Cambodian descendants that enter Cambodia with a foreign passport. Valid documents to prove that their parents are Cambodian citizens, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, family book or Cambodian ID card are required.

This visa gives the applicant unlimited entrance into Cambodia.

The official visa or B-class visa is issued to foreign employees of organisations, such as the United Nations or World Health Organisation, who enter Cambodia with the government’s invitation.

The courtesy visa is issued for free for employees of international NGOs that have a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The international NGO will have to apply for the visa in advance and have a representative meet the applicant at the airport with a letter of attestation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. However, if you enter Cambodia with another type of visa, you will have to leave and re-enter to get a C-class visa.

What are the basic requirements for applying for a visa in Cambodia?

To apply for visas in Cambodia, you will need:

• An international passport issued by your home country and valid for at least six months
• Passport-sized photos
• Documents required by the immigration office, such as a cover letter or invitation letter
• Accommodation proof (visa on arrival)
• Visa application form (visa on arrival)

To get a Cambodian visa, you can apply for one on arrival, at the Cambodian embassy or online.

Visa on arrival

The visa on arrival is only issued to foreigners who enter Cambodia for tourism or business purposes, the T-class visa and EB visa.

Visas on arrival are available at the following entry points:

• Phnom Penh International Airport
• Siem Reap International Airport

The ability to obtain a visa on arrival has been suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to boarding a flight to Cambodia, all foreigners must have obtained a visa from the Cambodian Embassy in their country. There are also rules, which are changing frequently, on Covid testing before getting on a plane and quarantine on arrival in Cambodia. In this respect, you need to check with the Cambodian Embassy in your country as to the rules in place at the time of your intended travel.

The Cambodian embassy

If preferred, visas can be applied in advance at the Cambodian embassy or consulate in your home country.

In non-Covid times, nationalities that are required to get a visa in advance at the Cambodian embassy are:

• Afghanistan
• Saudi Arabia

Online (e-visa)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation established an online system to process visas for Cambodia called the e-visa . However, only the tourist visa (T-class) can be processed online. Again, the granting of visas online has been suspended due to Covid-19.

Cambodia has increasingly supported foreign investment, and more foreigners are entering Cambodia for reasons such as tourism, work, study or retirement.

How to Get a Visa to Cambodia

Almost all nationalities need a visa to visit Cambodia.

If you’re from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, or anywhere in Europe, South America or most other countries in the world, our visa tips apply to you.

You don’t need a visa if you’re from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam . With one of the above passports, you are allowed to stay between 14–30 days, so check before you arrive.

If you are from Afghanistan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Sudan , you’ll need to get a visa at a consulate before you arrive.

Get the tourist e-visa if you are:

Staying less than 30 days and…

• Arriving by air to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, or Sihanoukville

Get the tourist visa on arrival if you are:

Staying 30–60 days?

You should still get an e-visa or the visa on arrival. You’ll need a visa extension after 30 days.

Need a multiple-entry or long-term Cambodia visa?

For long-term stays, you can get a business visa, known as the e-Class visa. (Note that the e-Class visa is not the e-visa — which is a t-Class visa). For e-class visas longer than 6 months, you are also granted multiple entries.

There is no multiple entry visa for shorter stays in Cambodia, so if you’re going in and out, you need to get a new visa each time.

These are actually the same visa — a 30-day travel visa — just delivered in two different ways.

Reasons to get the e-visa

• You can plan ahead, so no nasty surprises at the airport
• Avoid the visa line at the airport after your long flight
• Avoid scams when using a land border

Reasons to get a visa on arrival

• It can be a little cheaper if arriving by air
• More flexibility if you’re not sure when or where you will be arriving
• Your trip starts in less than 4 days
• You’ll be arriving at a land border where the e-visa is not valid (see the list in the e-visa section above for valid crossings)

If you qualify for an e-visa, we recommend you get it. It’s just more convenient to get your visa online before you arrive in Cambodia, preventing unwelcome surprises when you get there. Plus, you’ll be able to skip the long visa line at the airport.

Cost of a Cambodia e-visa

• $40 from the Cambodia e-visa website
• $55–70 from a visa service

What you’ll need to get a Cambodia e-visa online:

• Must have 6 months on passport with at least one double-sided blank page
• Must apply online at least 4 days before travel (we advise you leave a couple of weeks just in case)
• One passport photo to be submitted online
• Take 2 copies of your visa letter with you. You’ll give one to the officials when you arrive, one when you leave

How to get your Cambodia e-visa

On the Cambodia website

You can get the e-visa on the official Cambodia government website . They say processing takes three days but the system is not fool-proof, so apply at least a week in advance. Also, if there is any problem with your application, you will lose your visa fee and have no visa to show for it.

From a visa service

If you’d rather have someone else deal with the red tape, you can use a visa service to get your Cambodia e-visa . They make the process easier for you by providing:

• Smart application forms that automatically track down frequently made mistakes
• Customer service 24/7, including holidays and weekends
• Checking your application manually to make sure everything is correct
• More payment options, including PayPal
• Full refund of the application fee if the visa application is denied for any reason
• Can get a rush service if you are applying late

You will pay a little more for the service but it might save you time, stress and even money in the long-run.

If you’re not sure where you’ll arrive in Cambodia, or when you’ll get there, then a visa on arrival makes sense. Getting a visa on arrival is a simple, if sometimes stressful, process.

To make sure things go smoothly at the border, you’ll need all the items listed in the requirements section below, plus some patience and a sense of humour.

Cost of a Cambodia visa on arrival

• $30 at the airport
• $35–55 at a land border, depending on bribes and other services you might choose

What you’ll need for tourist visa on arrival:

• Immigration form which you’ll get on the plane
• Cash in US dollars (there is a US ATM in the airport arrivals area)
• One passport photo (apparently this is no longer needed as of June 2019 but you might want to bring one just in case)

Visa on arrival at the airport

If you’re arriving at the airport and for some reason did not get an e-visa, getting a visa on arrival is relatively simple.

Just fill out the immigration card you’re given on the plane and then wait in line. Follow the instructions of the officials at the airport and eventually you will have your visa.

Visa on arrival at the border

Crossing into Cambodia by land can be an exciting, confusing, and aggravating experience. It’s true that everyone wants to make a little money off you, including the guest house where you arranged your transportation, the mini-bus driver, random guys hanging out at the border, and the border-crossing officials, too.

So along with the basic visa requirements listed above, you should be aware of the border crossing scams so you come away with less stress and more money in your pocket.

If you’re planning an extended stay in Cambodia, of more than 60 days, and don’t want to be doing visa runs every month, then consider applying for an e-Class visa. This is not to be confused with the e-visa, which is actually a t-Class (tourist-class) visa.

An e-Class visa is technically a business visa, but it also applies for digital nomads, students, and retirees who want to live in Cambodia.

Like a tourist visa, you can get your first e-Class visa on arrival and it is valid for 30 days.

The big difference is that, unlike the tourist visa, an e-class visa can be extended indefinitely. The longer extensions, of 6 or 12 months, are even valid for multiple entry.

A tourist visa can be extended once, for up to 30 days.

The easiest way to do this is to use a travel agent. It will cost you around $40–50 but might take a week or more.

You might get a slightly cheaper deal at the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh. However, that means a couple of trips out to the airport, where the office is located, and the hassle of dealing with red tape. Plus, you may be charged the same fee as through an agent anyway.

The main problem with getting a visa extension is that you might be left sitting waiting in one place while someone else has your passport.

If you try to leave Cambodia with an expired visa, you will be charged $10 per each day of overstay. If you’re only over by a couple of days, this can be a better option than trying to get a visa extension. Just make sure you have exact change in USD, as your chances of getting change from the immigration guards is slim!

If you overstay by more than 30 days, official action, like arrest or deportation, can be taken against you. So don’t do it!

Of course you do!

Though Cambodia is generally a very safe place to travel, you should still make sure to have good travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a small expense (usually about a dollar or two per day) to guard against bankruptcy in case the worst comes to the worst.

Comprehensive Guide on Cambodian Visa in 2024

Cambodia is increasingly receiving attention as a travel destination in Southeast Asia. Described as ‘South-East Asia’s enticing new travel frontier’ , and rated by TripAdvisor for winning the best hotel in the world in 2020. Airlines such as Emirates, Cambodia Angkor Air, and Laos Airlines expanded their services and routes to Cambodia enhancing its accessibility. Tourism is poised to see improvement with these initiatives,  and visitors must be well-informed about the entry requirements, especially regarding visas. 

This article aims to offer a detailed guide on the visa process for entering the Kingdom.

Types of visas for cambodia.

The two most common visas in Cambodia: are tourist visas (T visa) and ordinary visas (E visa).

Tourist visa (T visa)

A tourist visa is provided for foreign citizens travelling to Cambodia. It can be applied for in advance or obtained directly at the airport or border port upon arrival in the kingdom. The tourist visa is limited to a single entry and can only be renewed once. After renewal, visitors can stay for another 30 days. The holder must leave Cambodia after the 30 days are up, and if they want to re-enter, it is necessary to apply for a new visa.

Therefore, if one plans to stay in Cambodia for a long time, a tourist visa may not be the best option. It is preferable to consider applying for an ordinary visa (E visa).

Ordinary visa (e visa).

There are 4 types of Ordinary visa also known as E visa 

Cambodia Business Visa (EB)

• Applicable groups: Foreigners who intend to conduct business, investment or work in Cambodia, including their partners and children, freelancers and volunteers can also apply for this type of visa.
• Validity period: Valid within 1 month from the date of entry into Cambodia and can be extended for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 12 months in Cambodia. Only 6-month and 12-month EB visas are allowed multiple times.
• Requirements: The company’s employment contract or invitation letter is required.
• Note: The EB visa does not give you the right to work in Cambodia. You also need to hold a work certificate issued by the Ministry of Labor.

Cambodia Employment Visa (EG)

• Applicable people: Foreigners who are not yet employed in Cambodia but are actively looking for work.
• Validity period: Usually valid for 1 month
• Requirements: The visa can only be renewed once, up to 6 months. You can apply for an EB visa after expiration.

Cambodia Retirement Visa (ER)

• Applicable people: Foreigners who want to retire in Cambodia
• Validity period: Valid within 1 month from the date of entry into Cambodia. It can be extended in Cambodia, and each extension can be up to 1 year.
• Requirements: Applicants must be over 55 years old and demonstrate sufficient pension or savings to support life in Cambodia.

Cambodia Student Visa (ES)

• Applicable group: Foreign students studying in educational institutions registered in Cambodia.
• Validity period: The initial visa is valid for 1 month, and can be extended in Cambodia according to the study period.
• Requirements: Admission letters or supporting documents from the school are required.

Visa Application Methods: 

There are three ways to apply for a Cambodian visa: visa on arrival, electronic visa and embassy. Both visa types can be applied for through these three methods.

1. Visa on arrival

Passengers entering by air, land, or sea can apply for a visa on arrival at the border port. A visa on arrival provides great convenience to international passengers travelling to Cambodia, making tourism or temporary business visits simpler and more flexible.

Cost: 30 USD for a tourist visa (T Visa),  35 USD for an ordinary visa (E Visa)

Application Process:

• Arrive at the port of entry (such as Phnom Penh New International Airport, or Siem Reap New International Airport);
• Fill in the immigration card, which can be obtained on the plane. If you do not receive it, you can get it at the entry point;
• Submit the completed entry card, visa application form, passport and fee to the designated service window;
• Take photos and fingerprints under the instructions of the immigration officer, and then wait for review and issuance;

Precautions:

• Prepare a complete set of information in advance to facilitate smooth entry;
• You must pay cash in US dollars when applying for a visa on arrival. It is best to prepare enough cash in advance to avoid delays caused by payment problems

2. Electronic Visa (e-Visa)

Cambodia Electronic Visa (e-Visa) is a convenient way to obtain a visa. Travellers can apply online to obtain permission to enter Cambodia.

Step 1: The first step is to log in to the official website, click to enter the application page, and fill in the information truthfully;

Step 2:  is to upload the scanned copy of the original passport and photos;

Step 3: is to pay the fee, which supports credit card (Visa), MasterCard (MasterCard), China UnionPay (UnionPay), Alipay or WeChat payment;

Step 4: Submit after confirmation and wait for the approval. The processing time is about 3 working days. 

Step 5: Print the electronic visa. Once the application is approved, the Immigration Bureau will send the electronic visa to the applicant's email address, and travellers need to print it out and carry it with them to present it when entering the country.

Cambodia tourist visa (T visa)

• Fee: USD 30 + USD 6 (handling fee)
• Validity period: 3 months (from the date of issue)
• Entry: Single entry only
• Length of stay: 30 days
• Review time: 3 working days
• Required materials: Copy of original passport (valid for more than 6 months), electronic white background photo (size 3.5 x 4.5cm), valid email address, itinerary information (such as planned stay date, port of entry, hotel, etc.)

Cambodia Ordinary Visa (E Visa)

• Fee: USD 35 + USD 7 (handling fee)
• Review time: 3 working days Requirements: Copy of original passport (valid for more than 6 months), electronic white background photo (size 3.5 x 4.5cm), valid email address, itinerary information (such as planned stay date, port of entry, check-in hotels, etc.)

It is worth noting that electronic visas are only applicable to ports of entry designated by the Cambodian government. Before travelling, it is best to verify carefully to confirm that your intended port of entry.

• Phnom Penh International Airport
• Siem Reap International Airport
• Sihanoukville International Airport
• Cham Yeam (Kong Kong) Port-Thailand Border
• Poipet (Banteay Meanchey Province)-Thailand Border
• Bavet (Svay Rieng Province)-Vietnam border
• Tropaeng Kreal Border Post (Stung Treng Province)-Laos border

3. Embassy Application 

An embassy visa refers to the visa applied at the nearest Cambodian consulate in your home or visiting country. 

Application process

• Determine the visa type: First, determine the type of visa you need (such as tourism, business, student, etc.), because different types of visas have different application requirements and procedures.
• Preparation materials: Generally speaking, applicants need to provide a valid passport, visa application form, passport-size photos, invitation letters, hotel reservations, round-trip air tickets, etc. The specific requirements depend on the visa type.
• Apply: Submit your complete visa application and relevant documents to the nearest Cambodian embassy or consulate. Some states may allow submission by mail.
• Pay the visa fee: Pay the corresponding visa fee according to the type of visa applied for. For fee standards, please refer to the official announcement from the Cambodian embassy or consulate to which you are applying.
• Waiting for approval: After applying approval times can range from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the processing speed of each embassy or consulate.

Other visa types in Cambodia

In addition to the visas mentioned above, other visa types are available for different groups of people.

Official Visa (B Visa) : Applicable to employees of organizations stationed in Cambodia at the invitation of the government, such as the United Nations or the World Health Organization.

Visitor Visa (C Visa) : This is a free visa for employees of international NGOs who have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Long-term residence visa (K visa) : Applicable to Cambodian people holding foreign passports, this visa can obtain a lifetime visa for free.

Cambodian Child Visa : All non-Cambodian children must have an E visa to enter Cambodia. If one of the child's parents is Cambodian, a K visa is applicable.

Getting A Tourist Visa In Cambodia

U.S. citizens must obtain a tourist visa to enter Cambodia for a maximum of 30 days per trip. After the 30-day period has lapsed, you will be required to buy a new visa or obtain permanent or long-term residency permit.

While Cambodia does not offer any extended visa specifically for retirees, it has one of the most relaxed visa programs in the world. To stay permanently, all you need to do is show up. When you land at the airport, request a one-year visa (renewable at the end of the 12 months) and be on your way. It’s almost too easy.

Again, requirements for a business or an employment visa in Cambodia can be quite lax.

Working as little as a day or two per month (or less) or finding a local agent specializing in business visas can be all you need to obtain a longer-stay visa.

Residency in Cambodia can lead to a second passport and dual citizenship in this country.

How to Extend a Cambodia Visa

Getting a visa for Cambodia is relatively easy, and extending it is just as simple. You can renew your visa for one month up to a year ! Here’s how you can extend your Cambodia visa without leaving the country.

**Important notice: As of September 4, 2017, the laws for long-term Cambodia visa extension have changed. This article has been edited to reflect that. You can read more about the changes here .

Which types of  Cambodia Visas can you extend?

There are two types of Cambodia visas you can extend without leaving the country:  TOURIST (T) Visa or ORDINARY (E) Visa.

There are 4 different types of Ordinary (E) Visas: (EB) Visa: Business, (EG) Visa for those searching for employment, (ER) Visa for Retirement, and (ES) Visa for Students. You can choose which type you would like when you extend your Cambodia visa.

Which Cambodia Visa should you get?

If you plan to stay in Cambodia for less than 2 months , get a TOURIST (T) VISA . You can get a 1-month Cambodia Tourist Visa on arrival when entering by land crossing or at an airport. You can extend your Cambodia Tourist (T) Visa for 1 month by going through a travel agency or do it on your own at the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh.

If you plan to stay in Cambodia for longer than 2 months , get an ORDINARY (E) VISA , which you can also get on-arrival via land or airport. After one month you can extend it for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. The 6 and 12-month extensions allow multiple entries into the country, meaning you can leave Cambodia and come back on the same valid visa. Cambodia is one of the easiest countries in Southeast Asia to stay long term, especially since you can get a Cambodia visa-on-arrival. However, it is not as easy as it used to be to extend your visa long term.

**Note: Visa laws change frequently in Cambodia, sometimes without much notice. We update this article as often as possible when we learn new information. As of September 4, 2017, you can only apply for a 6-month visa extension if it is your first time coming to Cambodia. Subsequent 6 and 12-month visas will require proof of an employment letter or a valid Work Permit.

In May 2019 a friend in Phnom Penh said that she was asked to show an employment letter when she went to extend her visa for 3 months. It is possible that they are cracking down more on visa extensions to ensure people staying in the country long term are working legally. We’ll update if we hear any more information about the 3-month visa extension requirements.

Your TOURIST (T) VISA or ORDINARY (E) VISA can easily be extended within a few days at many travel agencies in Phnom Penh, or you can go to the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh by yourself.

NOTE: If you want to extend your visa for longer than 1 month, you must enter the country on an ORDINARY (E) VISA.

Be aware of the public holidays in Cambodia when planning out your visa extension. The Department of Immigration is closed on public holidays, which can delay your visa extension.

Remember to Bring:

• Your passport
• 1 passport photo (6×4)
• The required fee in US Dollars

Here’s an example of a one-year multiple-entry EB visa. Note that to get a one-year visa you will need a valid work permit.

Going to the department of immigration in phnom penh.

A reader reported in 2019 that it was a simple process to go to the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh to extend their visa. They also said it saved them a good amount of money compared to using a travel agent (about $20 less, minus travel expenses).

Previously this definitely wasn’t the easiest way to go about extending your visa as you’d have to deal with getting all the way out to the Department of Immigration office by the Phnom Penh International Airport. Plus it could take a long time with no guarantees of when your visa would be ready. According to this reader, this is no longer the case, which is great news!

Is this a good option for you?

Personally, we aren’t big fans of dealing with Cambodian bureaucracy, having dealt with it first hand in the past on many occasions when we lived in Phnom Penh . We prefer to pay a little extra money and go through a travel agent to avoid wasting time and potential hassles. But that’s just us, and you might be up for the bureaucracy adventure! Going to the Department of Immigration to extend your visa is a good option for you if you plan to be in Phnom Penh for at least five days and don’t mind spending your time going to and from the Department of Immigration to drop-off and pick up your passport on two different days.

Getting there will take about 30 minutes to an hour each way, depending on where you are staying in the city. You’ll also spend time waiting at the Immigration office both days depending on how busy it is. You’re looking at about 1.5-3 hours each day based on how smoothly it all goes.

How to get there and what to do

The Department of Immigration is located across from Phnom Penh International Airport ( Google Map ). Hours for dropping off your passport and visa extension paperwork are from 2 PM-5 PM Monday through Friday. This is subject to holidays, of course, so be sure to look ahead at the public holidays in Cambodia before you make the trip out.

To get to the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh you can take a tuk-tuk, Grab taxi, PassApp, or a motorbike directly there. You can also take public bus #3 to the Phnom Penh International Airport, then walk across the street. The public bus is the cheapest option at 2000 Riel ($0.50 USD) each way, and it has air-con!

At the Immigration office, you’ll need $30 USD in cash and a photo ID. You may also need a passport photo, so bring one just in case. Once your paperwork and money have been collected and processed you’ll get a receipt and temporary ID which will tell you your pick-up date. This is usually 3-5 business days later as long as there are no holidays. You will need to go back to the Department of Immigration office to collect your passport during the same hours.

Travel Agent Suggestions in Phnom Penh

Another option is to drop your passport with a travel agency that will process your Cambodia visa extension for you, freeing up your time to explore Phnom Penh . This option is a bit more expensive than doing it yourself since travel agencies charge a fee for their service.

Below are some travel agencies in Phnom Penh that offer visa extension services. We recommend contacting them directly through Facebook messenger or calling if you have any questions before you go in.

Some guesthouses and hotels also offer visa extension services. Just ask at reception.

How to extend your cambodia visa outside of phnom penh.

To extend a Cambodia visa, your passport must be processed at the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh. If you are in another province it may be possible to have your passport sent to Phnom Penh through a travel agency. There will be an additional fee for this service and it may take a few extra days so plan accordingly.

Compared with the added cost of traveling to Phnom Penh yourself, sending your passport may be a more cost-effective option. Though it might seem scary to give your passport to a stranger, this is how it is done.

Be sure to check reviews on Facebook and Tripadvisor of the travel agency you choose before using their services.

Getting a Cambodia e-Visa (Electronic Visa)

If you’re the type of traveler who likes to plan ahead, you have the option to get a Cambodia e-visa online before your trip. All you have to do is fill out the online application and make the payment. You will receive the document via email so you don’t have to deal directly with a Cambodia embassy. When you arrive in Cambodia, present your passport and the document.

Note that an electronic visa is not the same as an Ordinary (E) visa. At least it’s not confusing. A Cambodia e-visa can be extended once for 30 days, similar to a Tourist (T) visa. One of the perks of getting an e-visa ahead of time is that you can pay by credit/debit card or Paypal instead of having to pay USD for a visa-on-arrival.

Extending a cambodia retirement visa (er visa).

If you plan to retire in Cambodia, at some point you will need to renew your Retirement Visa. Cambodia is a popular place to retire in Southeast Asia and it’s still fairly easy to do so.

One of our readers who has been living on an ER Visa for the past six years in Cambodia shared his experience renewing his Retirement (ER Visa) in January 2019.

Here’s what he said: “It was no problem. I just took my passport into a travel agent in Phnom Penh with 2 passport size photos and $293 (for 12-month extension). No forms to fill out and I got my passport back 11 days later.”

Our Experience with Cambodia Visas

We moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia in May 2015. We got 1-month Ordinary (E) visas on arrival. After that month we extended our Ordinary (E) visas foår 1 more month, as we moved to Phnom Penh without jobs and weren’t sure what the future held.

Within that second month, we found jobs and then got 1-year visa extensions. We got Ordinary (E) visas again the following year, and once more in July 2017 when we returned to Cambodia after two months away traveling in Laos and Taiwan .

On September 4, 2017, the government changed the rules about Cambodia visa extensions. You are now only allowed to extend your Cambodia visa for 6 or 12 months if you have a valid work permit, or are on a special type of visa such as a Retirement Visa (ER) or a Student Visa (ES).

The government has been cracking down on Work Permits and many businesses are scrambling to get them for their employees. You may qualify to apply for a Work Permit on your own online through the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training website .

If you do not have a valid Work Permit, you will only be able to extend your Ordinary (E) Visa for 3 months. Then you will have to leave Cambodia and can return again and get another Ordinary (E) visa and repeat the visa extension process. In May 2019 a friend was asked to show a work permit to get a 3-month visa extension, so it may not be as easy anymore to get a long term extension.

I have visited Cambodia a number of times and decided to retire here. I’m over 55 so no documentation is required. At Phnom Pehn airport I applied for a E type visa at the visa on arrival booth, could not have been easier I was asked how long I intended to stay, I replied 12 months there were no other questions or forms or documents asked for, after five minutes waiting in the designated area I was politely returned my passport with a one month E (ordinary) visa. On to passport control, no queues and a really charming passport officer asked me to do the figure prints me and stamped my passport with a “welcome to Cambodia” sir, walked straight through customs again really all smiles from the officers in attendance. As I live in Bancheay Meanchey 380km from Phnom Pehn I decided to use an agent in Siem Reap. Again couldn’t have been easier. Walked in asked if they could do a visa extension for me replied yes $295 for 12 months (that’s $290 government fees and a fee of $5 including processing and tracked postage), Ten days later I picked my passport with my my new 12 month visa, perfect.

I am a US citizen who married a Khmer woman (in Cambodia = we have a Cambodian Marriage License). I am being told that I may qualify for the “ordinary” E class visa. Unfortunately, there is very little information on this subject. I understand I follow the same process as the business visa but submit my marriage documents in place of letter of employment/work agreement.

Ryan, same situation but further along. In early August 2020 US Khmer Embassy changed their Visa Requirements website to include an expanded list of qualifiers for an E-Class “Business” Visa. I got one based on Khmer wife and newborn, an “EF”, presumably “Family”. Required the documents you’d expect plus a written letter/email from the in-country wife about the need for my presence in the Kingdom. The US Khmer Embassy was very responsive via email and upon receipt of the requested documents promptly issued the EF Visa I’m now in country on.

I get an annual multi-entry EB visa for the past 5 years based on my marriage to a Cambodian, and a Cambodian son (dual nationality). A lot of the Facebook and simila information is misleading so we paid and had this researched extensively by a leading Cambodian / International lawl firm in Phnom Penh and there is no specific legal provision, however the immigration authority seem to have discretion. Notwithstanding situations and regulations seem to change. Anually I submit my passport with existing visa, and copies (though sometimes asked for originals) of cambodia marriage documents, wife Cambodian ID, son Cambodian birth certificate, wifes family book, my sangkat residence letter, house rental agreement and this year we are asked for evidence of registration on FPCS, plus passport photo. I have not been asked for a work permit, but the Eb visa does not confer work status – if you are working you will also need a work permit. Hope this helps

As far as we know, if you enter Cambodia with an Ordinary (E) visa, which many nationalities can get on arrival, then you will be able to extend that visa once you get a job. You should not need to book a return flight to your country. That said, different countries have different rules, so you will want to confirm that. Best of luck with your move!

Hi Sam, if it is your first time going to Cambodia then I would suggest entering the country with an (E) Ordinary visa which you will be able to extend for 3-6 months. This should give you ample time to look for a job in Cambodia. Then your workplace can help you prepare the proper paperwork to get a visa extension and Work Permit. I can’t say whether it’s easy to find a job in Cambodia. It depends on what field you are in, your experience, which companies are hiring at the time, etc. Please be sure to look at the Cambodia Embassy website to ensure that you have the proper paperwork and everything you need to enter the country.

Hi Jennifer, I am a Indian passport holder and just arrived to Cambodia on 13th Aug. On the application form i had mentioned Ordinary (E) visa but they refused to give me a E visa and instead put a T visa on my passport. I have been to Cambodia in the past and was never refused a T visa. This is the first time i had this issue and the immigration officer was asking me to provide them some letter (which I could not understand or am aware of it). Has there been any changes in the visa process. What are the other options to get the E visa. Would appreciate if i could get any help on the above. Thanks in advance.

Yours is the first instance we’re hearing of where they denied an E visa on arrival. We had heard that immigration started requiring a letter for E visa extensions, but not for E visa on arrival. Yes, same has happened to me too. This is the second time I had applied for Ordinary and they gave me Tourist. Not sure, if there is a unwritten law that Indians are not allowed Ordinary Visa on arrival. Officer kept saying, I need to go to immigration and submit my documents.

Dear Jennifer, I think your site is the best on Cambodian visa. I recently extended my Cambodian visa at the immigration office. Please add this information to the things needed at the immigration office: the complete, complete, full, full address (and phone number) in Phnom Penh or Cambodia where the person is staying which includes specific names of municipality And district which most hotels may not print on their cards but which will show on Google Maps in Roman letters and which should be written down in advance because no Wi-Fi is available at the immigration office.

I arrived in Cambodia with an Ordinary E Visa. Then I asked an EG Visa extension (for those searching for employment) for 6 months the 6th august and it was ready 16th. I provided only passport and fee 160$ at this address : East West Travel Co. #16 Street 57. Thank you very much to had shared this one !!! Because I called an other place (first result in google for visa extension in Cambodia), it was more expensive and they wanted to charge another fee for a letter…

Good to know : Before I asked for this extension, I had already 7 Tourist T VISA, so it was far to be my first time in Cambodia 🙂

I am traveling with a group of engineering university students to Kampot for 8 weeks in January 2020. We will be undertaking volunteer work with an NGO assisting in the design and construction of a toilet block for a local school as well as training locals so they can reproduce this project. We will not receive any payments – so technically not working.

We are planning on entering Cambodia on a Tourist E-Visa (or Business E-Visa) for 30 days. We will get these visas prior to arriving in Cambodia. We understand we will need to extend this visa for another 30 days to allow us to be in Cambodia for the full 60 days.

The options appear to be:

1. Pay a travel agent in Kampot to get the visa extended in Phnom Penh for an additional 30 days ($50USD). My concern here is not having access to our passports for up to 5 days.

2. Travel to Vietnam at the Ha Tien border crossing. Enter Vietnam on a pre-arranged Tourist E Visa ($25USD + $20USD stamping fee). Stay for 1-2 nights in Vietnam. Return to Cambodia border crossing and apply for a Tourist Visa On Arrival ($35USD) which will give us another 30 days in Cambodia. Positives of this process is that we have access to our passports at all times, but negatives are costs of bus travel to and from Ha Tien, accommodation in Ha Tien and purchase of Vietnamese visa.

What would yo suggest the best course of action may be?

Hi Kristy, I believe there is a volunteer visa option with the Ordinary (E) visa that you can apply for though I don’t know what that process entails or if it would be worth the effort to get it. That might be something to look into.

Both options you mentioned should work. I know it feels scary to be without your passports when you send them through a travel agent, but that’s how it is done if you are applying for a visa extension from outside of Phnom Penh. Make sure everyone in your group has copies of their passport picture page before sending them off. I don’t know which travel agents in Kampot are best to work with. You can try asking in some of the Kampot Facebook groups as expats living there will likely have more insight.

As you said, the cost of a visa run trip to Vietnam will add up, so renewing your visa with a travel agent is probably the better option if time and money are a concern. Hope your group has a great trip!

I obtained Ordinary Visa on arrival $35, then extended to get 6 month visa $161. The travel agency simply printed off a pre-written letter for the embassy. This was NOT my first visit to Cambodia.

Hi Mera, As far as we know there isn’t a way to get a 12-month visa as a freelancer. You will probably need to get an Ordinary (E) visa when you arrive in Cambodia and get a 3-month visa extension, then leave the country and return and do the same thing again. After flying from Toronto, Canada in 2017, I applied for ordinary (E) visa on the plane from Shanghai to Siem Reap, Cambodia. They simply gave people on the plane an application to fill out while we were in flight from China. (The ordinary (E) visa used to be called the “Business” Visa.) Paid the $35 when we landed at Siem Reap.

A few days later I took my passport to a local travel agency in Siem Reap and paid for a six month extension. They sent it off to Phnom Penh and I got it back a week later with the six month Extension. No problems at all. When I return later this year or next year.. (end of 2019 or beginning of 2020) I will be getting the ordinary (E) visa again and apply for the ER “Retirement” 12 month extension.

I have a khmer boyfriend and at the moment we are in Thailand but we plan to move to Cambodia. We will arrive in Cambodia the day after tomorrow but we have to go back to Thailand the 22nd (may) until 5th (June). Then we plan to come back to Cambodia and he will stay there but I have to go back to Thailand from 22nd of June until 14th of June. Then back to Cambodia and I would love to stay there one year.

What do you recommend me to do? Reading the article I thought about getting the ordinary (E) visa the day after tomorrow and then in that same week, applying for a “looking for a job 6 month visa” with multiple entry.

We both got offered a job in Cambodia already but we don’t know how that will work out. Is it easy/cheap to get a work permit?

And where can I apply for this 6 month visa? and what is the name of this visa, like what do I have to tell them when I apply for it?

You can go to a travel agency to ask about the 6-month multiple entry visa. You will only be able to apply for this type of visa if it is your first time visiting Cambodia. Otherwise, you can only extend your (E) visa for 3 months. In that case, it will not be a multiple entry visa so it sounds like that won’t make sense for your situation. I’m not sure how quickly the travel agency will be able to get the visa for you, but it usually takes about a week or less. You can get a work permit once you have a job since it is tied to your employer, and they should help you with the process. Our schools helped us get our work permits, so I’m not sure what the cost is, to be honest. It seems to change every year, but your employer will know. I have an African passport and wanted a Business Visa (for 6 months), unfortunately I got a Tourist Visa by imposition. I renewed it for 1 additional month (total of 60 days). Finally, I took a flight out to a visa-free country and on my return I stated emphatically I needed a Business Visa. I was told at the airport that with my kind of passport, there was no way I could be given a business visa. After an hour, I was issued another Tourist Visa with threats of deportation (why am I touring Cambodia for all these while? what do I do etc?).

How often can I apply and renew Tourist Visa? Does it mean after every 60 days I need to take a flight out? (Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia do not give visa on arrival to African passport holders)

Can African passport holders not do business in/with Cambodian?

Hi, we are sorry to hear this happened to you. Unfortunately, this kind of thing is all too common in Cambodia for African passport holders.

When you say you asked for the Business visa do you mean the Ordinary (E) Visa? This is the visa type that you should get if you want to extend it for longer than 1 month. The Ordinary (E) Visa can be extended for 3 months. If you have a Work Permit, which you can apply for through your employer in Cambodia or online if you are self-employed, then you are able to extend an Ordinary (E) Visa for 6 or 12 months. I hope that immigration will allow you to get the Ordinary (E) Visa the next time you fly into the country.

If not then, yes, you will need to continue to get Tourist (T) Visas and leave the country every 60 days. I am not sure how many times you can do this before it becomes an issue.

i am a Nigerian English teacher who currently lives in Russia and would be visiting Cambodia next month to seek for a a teaching job. I heard about the EG visa category for first timer and people searching for jobs even without prior employment in Cambodia. However, i contacted the Cambodia Embassy in Moscow about an EG visa and i was told that they only have Tourist visa and EB- Business visa. Since most schools in Cambodia prefers face to face interview, they all want me to enter the country first before being considered probably. My question is, are there any flexibility as regards converting a tourist visa to maybe work visa or EG visa or something when you are in the country already and maybe got a job offer?

It’s our understanding that you can convert a Tourist (T) Visa within the first week of arriving in Cambodia, but that probably isn’t enough time for you to secure work unless you get quite lucky! Your best bet is to extend your Tourist (T) Visa for an additional 30 days. When your Tourist (T) Visa extension is up you will need to leave the country and you can try to get an Ordinary (E) Visa when you reenter. An Ordinary (E) Visa can be extended for 3 months, or if you have a job then you can get a Work Permit and extend your Ordinary (E) Visa for 6 or 12 months.

Hi, we are needing some help. I am Khmer and my boyfriend is from the US. Our original plan was for him to apply 1 month on Tourist Visa, then apply for 3 months on Business Visa as my Khmer brother and I have a business we can claim him under. We have his Business Letter with stamp prepared already, however we have run into a giant problem- he can’t apply for the Business Visa.

My boyfriend is currently on a 1 month Tourist Visa, which was given to him by default on arrival through the Phnom Penh International Airport. When we went to the Department of Immigration today (2 weeks post arrival), we were informed that his visa could not be extended or changed; he cannot apply for a Business Visa/Ordinary Visa within the country and he would have to leave & return to Cambodia in order to apply for a Business Visa/Ordinary Visa. Apparently, he would have had to change his visa type within the first week he was here. We did not know this policy, as we read from many articles that Business Visas were “easily extendable” from within the country and his 1 month Tourist Visa is still active. I’m begging you for step-by-step travel advice to keep him legal in Cambodia until June 04, 2019 (our departure date). I read from another article that traveling to Vietnam by bus for 2 days and then returning to Cambodia via land border crossing will give him the opportunity to apply for the Ordinary Visa. Here are my questions I am hoping you can answer to save our sanity. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

-What requirements are needed to obtain a Vietnam Visa or will we even need one if we are only traveling there for 2 days? (I read on a previous article that you can receive 2 weeks for free…HOW?!) -How much are Vietnam Visas for travel less than 2 weeks? -I am Khmer, will I need a Vietnam Visa? -Which land border crossing from Vietnam-Cambodia accepts applications for EB Visa/Ordinary Visa on spot? Unfortunately, that’s correct that a 1-month Tourist (T) Visa can only be extended for one month. The business visa is now called an Ordinary (E) Visa and can be selected by checking a box on the form when entering the country at land crossings or airports. We had no problem getting an Ordinary (E) Visa at the Bavet/Moc Bai land border crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia. The border crossing closest to Kep should offer the same options. You won’t need any special forms for him to get an Ordinary (E) Visa. It’s also good for one month and he can extend it for three months without leaving the country. He can extend it by going to the immigration office himself or by going to a travel agent who can help for a small fee. Some countries do get 2 weeks free in Vietnam, but unfortunately since your boyfriend is an American he will require a visa to go to Vietnam, even if it’s just for a couple of days. The most recent price we heard for the 1-month Vietnam visa for Americans is around $40. He can either go to Phnom Penh to the Vietnam Embassy to get his Vietnam visa, ask at a travel agency in Kep or Kampot about it, or get an e-visa. Is it possible to get 6month extension in Siem reap airport without working permit. I am the one working and I’m thinking that I will provide a certificate of employment to show immigration that I can sponsor my husband. He will try his luck to find job during those 6 months.

Hi Angel, it’s our understanding that if it is your husband’s first time coming to Cambodia then he will be able to get an Ordinary (E) visa when he arrives and extend it for 6 months one time. After that, if he doesn’t have a work permit he’ll need to leave Cambodia and re-enter with a new Ordinary (E) visa which he can then extend for 3 months. Not sure about doing the extension at the airport. You may want to check with a travel agent in Siem Reap first.

Hi, I was a frequent visitor of Cambodia and used their 6month Business Visa Extensions a few times (to give me leeway to get back to Thailand without hassle).

So to read that this is no longer possible now came as quite a shock. However I could live with the current system as long as at least the 3 month extensions are still granted without the need for a work permit…I suppose that is the case as of time of your writing this article?

I will need 10 days more than the 3 months they give. 1- Is it possible to extend the Tourist visa even if they say it is not? You seem to imply that. How exactly? You mention going to a travel agency? 2- How can I apply to a E (business) visa now that I am here already? This I suppose would be the way to get an extension: that’s what the officer told me when I got in.

Hi Jeff! It’s our understanding that a 1-month Tourist (T) visa can be extended for 1 more month. I don’t think you can extend a 3-month Tourist visa. You might still want to go into a travel agency to check on that and find out what your options are. I believe the only way to get an Ordinary (E) visa now would be to leave the country and then get an E visa when you enter again instead of a T visa. Hope that helps! Let us know how it goes.

Yeah, I’m f**d… The guys at the airport told me to just go and ask for the business visa afterwards, but getting cannot be done without leaving the country. It is the first time in more than 30 years of visiting Cambodia that I have such a problem. I’m pretty upset…

So now I have to organise a trip to the border and reapply for a visa to enter.

Any advice as to how to do these?

Hey Jeff, you could either fly or take a bus to cross a border and come back in. Stevo just crossed the Aranyaprathet/Poipet border between Bangkok and Siem Reap with Giant Ibis and that was very simple. They walked everyone on the bus through the whole thing. It’s quite a haul from Phnom Penh to Poipet if that’s where you’re coming from. There are also border crossings in Koh Kong and Pailin. Alternately you could also do a border run to Ho Chi Minh City. It’s better if you can cross and stay at least one day in another country before you return. You should be able to get the Ordinary (E) visa when you come back into Cambodia. I am an EU citizen,I have a Thai girl ( not merry ) (we are both in our 30 years so a retirment visa is not an option) and we have a child who is a Thai citizen.

Rather, we are both unsuitable for working in Cambodia so no one will give us a work permit.

Is there a simple way for us to get 1 year’s visas that we could live a year in Cambodia without any immigration problems?

Hi Sarah, it depends what passport you hold whether you need a Thai visa. Americans and many other nationalities get 30 days visa-free entry into Thailand. If that’s the case for you then you would just get a stamp when you go through immigration into Thailand and another stamp when you leave, but no visa is required.

At the moment, I am doing a 4-months internship with an NGO in Cambodia. I have entered the country 2 weeks ago with an ordinary tourist visa, which my HR Manager is currently extending for a further month. Within the 2 months, I now need to cross the border and re-enter the country to apply for a 3-months business visa. I understood, this type of visa doesn’t allow for multipe entries, but I want to spend christmas with a couple of friends in Thailand. What options do I have? Are they this strict and won`t let me in after the holidays? So would I need to apply for a new 3-months business visa again? Or shall I try to get a 6-months visa in the first place? Will I then need a work permit as I have been to Cambodia twice? I would very much appreciate your help on this, thanks a lot!!

Hi Mara, You are correct that if you have a single-entry visa then when you go to Thailand you won’t be able to re-enter Cambodia without a new visa. If you can get a 6-month multiple entry visa, that might be a better option. I’m not sure if you will be able to get it without a work permit though. You can check with the HR manager at your NGO about that. Otherwise, you can just get a new tourist or business visa when you come back to Cambodia after the holidays. Hope that helps!

I am planning to fly into Phnom Penh and I’m taking a one month TEFL certification course and then finding work. I’m flying from the US and on the US embassy website it says I need a letter from a place of work and onward travel. Is this correct? Actually the agency told me that any E visa obtained on arrival can be extended once for 6 months without the letter of work. So arrive in Cambodia – get E visa 1 month validity, and extend 6 months. After that have to leave the country, but when coming back can get a new 1 month E visa, and extend again 1 time for 6 months.

It is also possible to extend an Ordinary (E) visa for 3 months. As far as I know that is still the price of extension. With the new laws that went into effect in 2018 you can only extend for 6 or 12 months if you have a work permit.

Thank you so much for taking the time to compile all of this information. I hope you might be able to help me out or point me in the right direction. I am volunteering at an orphanage in Anlong Veng. I have been crossing into Thailand with one of the owners every month and coming back to get a new visa each time so have had 3 in total. Obviously I have gone about this in the wrong way. I plan on staying for another 6 months or so and My visa is up again in a week. Is there anyway to convert a T visa to an E? Can I extend my most recent T visa for one month? Would it be as simple as to leave the country and apply for an E visa upon my return? Is it worthwhile to go to an agency in Siem Riep to get assistance. The big issue I’m having right now is getting conflicting information on what I should do and some say I have to leave the country for 15 days before re entering and I need to be here at the end of the month as we have donors coming into town. I’m sorry for all of the questions but sincerely appreciate any assistance you can give as I’m a bit desperate right now. Thanks so much!

Hey Catherine! To be completely honest, I’m not sure if you need a work permit as a volunteer, but I do know you technically need an Ordinary (E) visa to volunteer. The law is constantly changing, so it’s hard to keep up! You should be able to get an Ordinary (E) visa the next time you re-enter the country instead of a tourist visa. It should be $35 instead of $30, and they really don’t ask any questions in our experience. From there you can only get a 3 month extension of your visa, which you can do at a tourism agency in Siem Reap. Since you’ll only be in country for 6 more months you may not need to worry about the work permit at all. To be safe, I would check with the organization where you will be volunteering. Hi Chris, thanks for your comment! It’s really hard to say at this point what will happen with visas in the future, as the rules seem to change every few months. If it is your first time entering Cambodia then we recommend getting the Ordinary (E) visa on arrival and extending for as long as you can (6 or 12 months). If it isn’t your first time in the country then you may only be allowed to extend it for 3 months without proof of a work permit. In that case, since you are self-employed you can apply for your Work Permit online at this website: https://fwcms.mlvt.gov.kh/ and enter “freelance” as both your employer and occupation, and your salary as 0. Hope that helps!

I have been in Cambodia for two weeks and will be here for two and a half months overall. On arrival, I requested an E-visa but was given a tourist visa by mistake (found it strange that the processing only took 2 minutes). I only realised a few days later and now am facing having to leave the country and come back over a weekend. Hey Emmy! You should be able to extend your Tourist visa for one more month. You can visit a travel agency in town, and they can help you out. Unfortunately you can only extend a tourist visa one time without leaving the country, so you’ll have to bail to Vietnam or somewhere else next month if you plan to stay longer. There are cheap flights to Malaysia on Air Asia!

Jennifer you need to correct your article. You have not researched this sufficiently. There are several options for the Ordinary (E) visa and it is still possible to get a 6 or 12 month EG visa without a work permit on the FIRST extension. All subsequent EB extensions will require a work permit.

Hi Jeff! To my knowledge you cannot apply for a 1 year visa online. The only way I know of doing it is to enter the country on a 1 month Ordinary (E) visa, which you can get at the airport, then extend that for a 1 year Ordinary (E) visa at a travel agency once you are in Cambodia. The one year Ordinary (E) visa should be multiple entry. Hope that helps! If I find out any different information to that I’ll respond on this comment again.

According to this website Colombian nationals can get an (E) Ordinary Visa, formerly known as a Business Visa, on arrival in Cambodia. I have a question- I’m American , I got a visa extension for my E visa for a year but my passport book is stamped from the airport that I have to depart from the country on such and such date, do I have to still leave?? Because I have my extension already but the date that the stamp says concerns me… although my extension says 2018.. can u help????

Your 1-year E Visa overrides the stamp on the departure card, so no worries. You are okay to come and go from Cambodia until the date on your E Visa. Hope that helps!

What are the Cambodian long-term visa options?

Cambodia offers several long-term visa options for various purposes, such as employment, study, business, and residence. Here are some of the common long-term visas:

Khmer (K) Visa: Specifically for individuals of Cambodian descent (with at least one Cambodian parent) entering the country with a foreign passport.

Courtesy (C) Visa: Intended for individuals who have accepted employment or volunteer work in Cambodia or have received an invitation from a registered organization with a valid Memorandum of Understanding with the Cambodian government.

Official (B) Visa: Issued to holders of official passports. It's a single-entry visa with a 3-month validity before the departure date. It allows a 30-day stay upon entering Cambodia, which can be extended.

Make sure to stay updated on routine vaccines

Keep an extra eye on the following to keep healthy and safe during your trip to Cambodia:

1. Food and water contamination: Stick to bottled or boiled water and eat well-cooked food from reputable sources.

2. Mosquito-borne illnesses: Dengue fever, chikungunya, and malaria are present, especially in rural areas and in the monsoon season. Using mosquito repellent and wearing long-sleeved clothing can help prevent bites.

3. Personal safety: Be cautious in Phnom Penh due to crime and in remote areas of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces due to land mines from the historic conflicts in the country.

Medication for personal use

Follow these tips to bring into Cambodia some over-the-counter medicines:

Declare all medications: Report all medication for personal use to customs authorities.

Original packaging: Always keep medicines in their original containers and in transparent bags in your hand luggage.

Prescription or doctor's letter: Present the medical prescription issued by your doctor or other competent authority, in English.

Check for restrictions: Call Cambodia's embassy to verify that all of your prescriptions are legal to bring with you.

How to Apply

To apply, you will need to provide a completed Thailand Privilege application form for your chosen membership category. Australia stops ‘golden visa’ scheme, aims to draw ‘exceptionally talented migrants’

• A total of 110,000 migration places will be cut under new measures announced in Australia's budget
• The number of places for international students will be capped while universities seeking higher enrolments have to meet new accommodation rules

Australia has ceased its business visa programme, including the so-called " golden visa ", as part of ongoing migration policy reforms revealed in the country's latest budget.

A new innovation visa programme to "attract exceptionally talented migrants" will instead be introduced at the end of the year. Australia will also reduce migration intake by 110,000 places over the next four financial years and cap the number of international students.

While they were prepared for the worst after hearing an earlier rumour about the programme's axing, migration agents handling business visa applications said they were still at a loss as to how to communicate these changes to clients who had spent hundreds or thousands of dollars in legal and other expenses, even if Canberra had promised to refund application fees.

"While I somewhat support the closure of the programme as it has been widely exploited, the way the government handled this has been appalling," said Jessica Meng, a business migration specialist at advisory firm Precision Migration. "The changes to the programme have been communicated piecemeal, lacking clarity."

The golden visa programme, officially known as the "significant investor visa", conferred the right of abode to foreign nationals who could invest A$5 million (US$3.3 million). Critics argued it had led to poor economic outcomes and was exploited by those with little interest in long-term investment. Chinese nationals made up 85 per cent of those who applied.

Following the budget announcement on Tuesday, Canberra told migration agents anyone still in the queue under the business visa programme would be subjected to more stringent screening.

There will be 1,000 applications to be approved in the current financial year, down from an original 1,900.

"This means an 18.5-year wait for those at the end of the 18,500-place queue," migration agent ANZ Migrate's James Hall said.

"What can be gleaned from all of this ... is that [Australia] doesn't want those applications and hasn't decided what to do with them. I would guess the refund approach is to see if this can significantly reduce the queue size and then decide what to do with the rest."

Hall said the lack of communication from Canberra about the rule changes was a disappointment to his industry.

"It contrasts significantly with New Zealand, who made changes to abolish their investor visa ... but they communicated everything clearly at each step and provided information in advance. For Australia, it's quite the opposite. We have not been updated and have to glean information from public statements and comments."

An application fee refund to those who wished to withdraw was cold comfort as it made up only a small proportion of the pool of fees paid by applicants, including legal and asset valuation, Meng said.

The closure of the programme was particularly unfair to those who had been nominated by a state in Australia to apply, she added.

Those who want to study in Australia, including the many Indian, Chinese and Nepali students who have come to the country in recent years , will face a more stringent application process.

On Tuesday, Canberra confirmed the number of places for international students would be capped and the government could limit the number of such enrolments by education providers.

Universities that want higher enrolments will need to build new, purpose-built student accommodation.

"I think that there is a recognition that there's a shortage of student accommodation and that is putting pressure on the housing market more broadly. It's not the only reason why there's pressure on the housing market, but it's one reason," Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers said at the press club in Canberra on Wednesday.

He said Canberra was working on "some kind of formula" of student accommodation that would take pressure off the private housing market.

Industry groups such as the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry were surprised at the lack of support for tourism in the new budget.

The number of Chinese tourists - Australia's biggest visitor group - is still about 50 per cent lower than pre-pandemic levels, according to Tourism Australia data.

"Short-term visitor arrivals in March were still 9 per cent below pre-pandemic levels for the same period. More support in this budget was critical," said John Hart, the executive chair for tourism at the chamber.

"Australia continues to rank poorly in competitiveness in the area of passenger facilitation in ports, which will affect our attractiveness as a [tourist] destination and impact our ability to generate visitor spend."

Australia's national carrier Qantas on Tuesday announced it would suspend flights to Shanghai in July due to low demand.

Australia's latest budget was in surplus for the second year in a row, mainly due to higher income tax takes and strong commodity prices, said the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), an economic policy group.

"These are all temporary windfalls and are unlikely to persist as the economy slows," said CEDA Chief Economist Cassandra Winzar.

Measures to tackle the high cost of living for Australians underpinned this year's budget. All Australian households are, for example, getting an A$300 energy rebate this financial year, although critics have been arguing the rebate should be means-tested.
