When Elvis Presley was just 22 years old, he purchased Graceland – a 10,266-square-foot mansion that occupied a nearly 14-acre property in Memphis, Tennessee . After the singer's death in 1977, the executors of his estate found that the mansion's exorbitant operating costs proved difficult to maintain, so they decided to open Graceland for tours in 1982. Since then, more than 20 million people from around the world have visited the mansion – which now spans 17,552 square feet – and its surrounding Elvis-themed museums and shops. Read on to plan your Graceland visit.

What is Graceland?

Graceland is a 120-acre institution dedicated to the life and music of Elvis Presley. The main draw is the mansion, but there's more to see than Elvis' former abode. Visitors can stop by Elvis Presley's Memphis, a 200,000-square-foot museum and entertainment complex. This building houses the Presley Motors Automobile Museum and a series of exhibits, such as "Elvis: Dressed to Rock," which features Elvis' performance outfits from 1969 to 1977.

The Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum, which displays the entertainer's gold and platinum records, his famous jumpsuits and movie memorabilia, can also be found here. Tourists will also have access to 10 interactive exhibits and games. Located throughout the complex, the interactive features include quizzes, a simulated golf cart ride and photo booths that put travelers on Elvis' movie posters and album covers. Finally, the complex houses two restaurants, a coffee shop, an ice cream parlor and a soundstage where tourists can watch Elvis' movies and attend live music performances.

After you learn all about the King, check out the Graceland Exhibition Center. This 80,000-square-foot venue features a variety of rotating museum exhibits, covering a variety of subjects, including motorcycles, Muhammad Ali and Van Gogh. The complex also boasts a food court, a bar and a separate, rentable event space.

No, you cannot visit Graceland without a tour. To access the site, you must purchase one of its ticket packages.

The cost per person varies depending on which tour experience you choose. Ticket packages that include access to the Graceland mansion start at $82 for adults and $46.50 for kids ages 5 to 10. Tickets can cost as much as $240 per person ages 2 and older for the "VIP" experiences, which offer access to exclusive areas, special keepsakes, meal vouchers and more.

There are multiple tour options for visiting Graceland.

• Elvis Presley's Memphis + Planes Tour : This is the basic tour option. It grants visitors access to Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex and the Elvis' Custom Jets exhibit, but does not include access to the mansion. Tickets for this tour start at $49.75 for adults, with discounts for children.
• Elvis Experience Tour : Tickets for this tour, which start at $82 per adult, include everything in the above tour, plus access to the mansion complete with an audio tour.
• Elvis Entourage VIP : The Elvis Entourage VIP tour includes everything in both the other tour options, plus skip-the-line access to the mansion, a VIP shuttle to the mansion, access to a special exhibit, and a keepsake pass. Tickets start at $139 per person ages 5 and older.
• Ultimate VIP Tour : The Ultimate VIP Tour includes everything in the Elvis Entourage VIP, plus a guided tour of the mansion with an experienced guide, access to a VIP lounge, a meal voucher to an on-site restaurant, an archives show and tell, the chance to buy exclusive souvenirs and a photo-op. Tickets for this experience start at $202 per person; children 2 and younger tour for free.
• Inside the Graceland Archives UVIP Tour : If you're interested in the work done by the Graceland Archives Team, consider this tour, which includes everything in the Ultimate VIP Tour, in addition to a behind-the-scenes look at how the performer's most iconic costumes are cared for and preserved, how his more than 90,000 photos are cataloged and prepped for touring exhibitions, and more. Tickets for this package start at $217 per person; children 2 and younger tour for free.

The mansion tour will take about 90 minutes to complete. Those who decide to tour the rest of Graceland's offerings should budget at least 3.5 hours to explore.

Which Graceland experience you choose largely depends on your fascination with the King. Graceland visitors mention that even non-Elvis fans will enjoy the tour and the up-close look at the entertainer's famous lifestyle. Visitors also appreciate the audio tour narrated by John Stamos. They recommend upgrading your tour to one of the VIP options, saying it is well worth the additional cost.

Graceland is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m. (depending on the day of the week and time of year). It closes or has abbreviated hours on holidays. The last mansion tour begins at 4 or 5 p.m., depending on the day and time of year.

The best time to visit Graceland depends on what kind of experience you want. Travelers should check out Graceland's events calendar as the complex and its hotel, the Guest House at Graceland, host numerous weekend events, concerts and day trips to Elvis' hometown throughout the year. Visitors in the mood for a festive atmosphere will want to book a trip in late November, December or early January to see the estate's holiday lights display and decorations.

Yes, you can stay overnight at Graceland. The Guest House at Graceland sits within steps of the mansion and features 450 rooms with designs inspired by Graceland, as well as two restaurants, an outdoor pool and a 464-seat theater for movies and performances, among other amenities.

• Visit the mansion after 2 p.m. to enjoy fewer crowds and shorter wait times, as this is the slowest time of day. (Multiple travelers note long wait times when arriving before this time). Check Graceland's website for exact opening times; there are certain days and holidays where hours vary.
• You're welcome to bring cameras, but flash photography is not permitted.
• Video cameras cannot be brought into the mansion, attractions or gift shops.
• Note that two rooms in the basement of the mansion and the airplanes are not wheelchair accessible.
• Bring a permanent marker to sign the famous Graceland wall before you leave.

A Travel Guide for Visiting Graceland on a Budget

Graceland, the legendary home of Elvis Presley in Memphis, Tennessee, is viewed by some as a solemn experience, while others are motivated by amusement or curiosity. Whatever your reason for visiting, no one can deny that a stopover is a unique experience that attracts people from around the world. Fortunately, a value-packed Graceland tour can be done with some advance planning.

Admission Costs

Knowing what you'd like to see at Graceland can help you save money on tickets. Different tour packages cater to different visitors, from the history buff who's a casual Elvis admirer to the full-blown Elvis fanatic.

Basic admission (starting at $41) covers the Mansion Only Tour, which is audio-guided. The Elvis Experience Tour includes exhibits of his wardrobe, automobiles, gold records, and other features. An Elvis Entourage VIP ticket adds front-of-the-line admission privileges and access to the Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex museums and exhibits. An airplanes tour can be added on to those three ticket options for an additional cost. The most extensive and pricey selection is the Ultimate VIP tour, which includes everything the other tours offer plus a meal voucher, access to the Ultimate Lounge, a Graceland archives session, and more.

Children under 6 are free on all tours except for the Ultimate VIP Tour, though that has no charge for kids under age 2. Although there's a small fee, online orders could spare you long waits in line, allowing you to pick up tickets at will-call and be ready for your Graceland experience.

Money-Saving Tips

A few tricks can help you save at Graceland, whether you are in Memphis just for Elvis or simply want to stop by and pay your respects.

If Graceland is your main focus, you might want to consider becoming a member, which can help you cut back on costs if you are a frequent visitor .

If you'd like to visit the graves of Elvis and his family, walk up to the Meditation Garden at Graceland for free between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. (except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day). And you can always pull off Elvis Presley Boulevard and take a selfie outside the famous mansion.

Big Elvis fans will come here just for Graceland, but for most people, it is a half-day adventure at best. Regardless, look at some of the other attractions in the area and make your trip to the city memorable. One good stop is to Sun Records, where Elvis cut his first demo record . According to legend, they asked Elvis which artist he sounded like, and he answered: "I don't sound like nobody." Soon enough, they discovered a new sound that swept the nation at this unassuming Sun Studio at 706 Union Ave.

See more Memphis music highlights using the free hourly shuttle running daily on a first come first served basis. The shuttle travels between Graceland, Heartbreak Hotel across the street, Sun Studio, and Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum. If you stay downtown, you can start out at Memphis Rock 'n' Soul and visit both Sun Studios and Graceland without spending on gas or parking.

Rock 'n' Soul also offers a discount on a Backstage Pass, which includes admissions to Graceland, Sun Studio, Stax Museum, and the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum.

When to Visit

The peak time for visitors is the annual Elvis Week in early- to mid-August when there are scores of special events such as concerts, movie screenings, and an Elvis Expo (off-property in downtown Memphis) of memorabilia. Reservations during this time are highly recommended, as individual events sell out months in advance.

For less stress and more value, go on a weekday and avoid times when school is not in session. The two busiest times are the August "Elvis Week" and January 8, which was Elvis' birthday.

Travel Arrangements

As you search for flights and Memphis hotel rooms, consider Graceland's location only 4 miles from Memphis International Airport (MEM). Although it's close to the airport, don't try to see the mansion on a layover. Traffic can be intense and waits at Graceland are often long. Security lines at MEM can become busy when travelers on business or holiday trips show up at the airport. Cabs are available to and from the airport.

Staying at The Guest House at Graceland is one option with discounts including admission to Graceland, seeing landmarks, and other Elvis-related events. Also, the Graceland RV Park and Campground is a less-expensive way to camp out within walking distance to Graceland and enjoy bike trails.

Hotels in the area around Graceland can be run-down or expensive. But the proximity to I-55 means you can reach a bargain room in another part of the city fairly quickly (unless it's rush hour). Some chain offerings are good values in the Bartlett area and just across the state line in Mississippi.

How Tours Work

The mansion and the visitor pavilion/parking complex sit on opposite sides of Elvis Presley Boulevard. Transportation across the street to the grounds and a headset enabling a self-guided tour of the property are included in the admission fee. The additional options available with the higher-priced tickets are on the pavilion-side of the boulevard: the jumpsuit, automobile, and airplane exhibits. You will be reminded at every turn that security cameras are watching you and that indoor flash photography is prohibited. The second floor of the mansion is off-limits; these rooms were Elvis' private quarters.

This is not the most elegant nor largest mansion you will ever see. You may be struck by the relative simplicity of Elvis' life, given his status as a world celebrity. Check out the "Jungle Room," furnished with outlandish carpeting, furniture, and kitsch, and the simple swing set he set up for his daughter Lisa Marie in the backyard. Everything here was left largely the way it looked at the time of Elvis' death in 1977.

Basic Information

Hours of operation vary by season, with longer hours during the summer months. It's possible to rent sections of the facility for private parties, and some people even get married here.

Elsewhere in Memphis

Memphis is known for more than Graceland. If you are staying downtown and using the free shuttle between Graceland and other attractions, you can maximize your time and money and have some other worthwhile visits. Highly recommended: the  National Civil Rights Museum , on the site of the former Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

A lesser-known but fascinating attraction is a five-block-long scale model of the lower Mississippi River at  Mud Island River Park , which is connected to downtown by a sky bridge. Anyone with a love of travel or geography will enjoy this site.

Downtown Memphis is home to Beale Street , which bills itself as the "home of blues and the birthplace of rock n' roll" and has two blocks of places to enjoy Memphis barbecue or live music.

How to visit Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley

Elvis’s beloved, outré mansion is the second-most visited private home in the US, beaten only by the White House. Here are some tips on making the most of a visit to the former residence of the King.

Pay your respects for free

Time it well and you can visit Graceland ’s grounds without spending a dime. Every morning (aside from Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, when the site is closed), from 7.30am to 8.30am, fans can pass through the gates free of charge for an hour of quiet contemplation at Elvis’s graveside.

Plan around peak season

The party kicks off from 5-8 January for Elvis’s birthday celebrations, where crowds flock for a cake-cutting ceremony sometimes hosted by his ex-wife, Priscilla Presley. There are events all across Memphis, too, but plan ahead as hotels book up lightning fast. The bustle returns for the week surrounding 16 August, the anniversary of Elvis’s death, when celebrations go all out, with tribute artists in bejewelled jumpsuits and a moving candlelight vigil.

Hop on the shuttle

Combine Graceland with a visit to Sun Studio and stand in the precise spot where Elvis first belted out That’s All Right. A free shuttle whisks guests between the two landmarks every hour.

Bring the kids

Graceland is family friendly. A new entertainment complex includes interactive attractions such as an LED dancefloor quiz and a photo booth. Inside the mansion, children gravitate towards the hyper-themed rooms, including the Jungle Room, with its green carpet and neon-lit indoor waterfall.

Arrive fashionably late

Dodge the queues by visiting after 2pm, when things start to wind down, but there are still a couple of hours to take it all in before the site closes at 4pm.

Sample a peanut butter and banana sandwich grilled in bacon grease — one of Elvis’s favourite eats — at the on-site Gladys’ Diner.

Tips for Visiting Graceland

Make a well-planned visit to Elvis Presley’s home using these tips for visiting Graceland. Maximize your visit, there is much to see.

Use these Graceland Tour Tips to get the most out of a full day doing the Graceland Tour in Memphis.

If you don’t live nearby, you will be planning a trip. I am also sharing with you where to stay and eat while in Memphis for your Elvis experience tour.

There is much more to visiting Graceland than only touring the mansion. Directly across the street from Graceland sits a huge entertainment complex complete with museums, gift shops, and restaurants for you to explore. This is where your Graceland experience will begin.

Your tour will begin at the Elvis Presley Memphis Entertainment Complex. This is where the ticket office is located.

It’s across the street in front of Graceland. There is a $10 parking fee. If you are staying at the Guesthouse, their shuttle runs every 30 minutes so don’t drive your own vehicle over and pay to park.

Graceland tours are scheduled every 15 minutes so you will be given a time on your ticket. Prior to boarding the shuttle, that is provided for your tour, you will watch a short, 7-minute video of Elvis’s career.

Once you are directed out to board the shuttle bus, you have an opportunity for your picture to be taken in front of a fun background. You are not obligated to buy these and you can opt-out of the photo if you like. They cost about $35 currently and can be found at the auto museum after your mansion tour.

You will also be handed an iPad and headphone set to listen to an audio tour narrated by John Stamos. As you make your way through the home of Elvis Presley, John who is also a big Elvis fan will tell you information about each room of the house tour.

You can spend as much time as you like on your tour. You are not required to board the free shuttle at any particular time. Just be sure not to miss the last bus of the day. Graceland hours of operation are daily 9-4. Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Elvis Presley’s Memphis Entertainment Complex

A lot has changed on Elvis Presley Blvd. since the King of Rock and Roll passed away back in 1977. Over the years Elvis Presley Enterprises was able to purchase land across the street from the mansion. They built a 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex known as Elvis Presley’s Memphis. 

Elvis Presley’s Memphis enables you to follow the life path that Elvis took, and surround yourself with the things that he loved.

What will you find there?

A nice collection of vehicles owned by Elvis which includes the infamous pink Cadillac are on display in the car museum.

Fun fact about the pink Caddy. It was referred to as Glady’s car but she never learned to drive. The car earned the name Glady’s car because she wanted a pink Cadillac and that is why Elvis bought it. He loved his Momma.

You will be able to view up close hundreds of artifacts from the extensive Graceland Archives, including Elvis’ amazing collection of gold and platinum records, his stunning jumpsuits, memorabilia from his movies, and more. This museum is the world’s largest and most comprehensive Elvis museum in the world.

The items on display change from time to time as they are sent to locations around the world for his dedicated fans to enjoy.

The display of the iconic Elvis jumpsuits is amazing. They are stacked two and three high on three walls, each encased individually and lit so they are easy to view. But that isn’t all, there are more on display in this museum in various places including the famous black leather suit he wore for the 1968 Comeback Special.

• Private Presley, showcasing his service in the U.S. Army
• ICONS: The Influence of Elvis Presley, an exhibit that showcases Elvis’ influence on other artists

Climb aboard Elvis’ customized jet, named after his daughter Lisa Marie, that features a living room, conference room, sitting room, and private bedroom, as well as gold-plated seat belts, suede chairs, and leather-covered tables, 24-karat gold-flecked sinks, and more.

Then, take a peek inside Elvis’ smaller Lockheed Jet Star, customized by Elvis with a yellow and green interior. Remember the decor is 70’s.

There are lots of souvenir shops at the complex. Many of them have similar items but some do have different things.

The T-shirts cost around $35 and up. You can find almost anything you can imagine. Shop Amazon before your trip for lots of Elvis t-shirts right here .

Restaurants at the Entertainment Complex

The menu includes; Classic American cuisine, including burgers, hot dogs, and pizza – plus one of Elvis’ favorites – Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches.

Vernon’s Smokehouse features authentic Memphis BBQ fare, including pork ribs, chicken, and beef brisket, seasoned with exclusive Vernon’s Smokehouse BBQ sauce. Also on the menu are; meatloaf, catfish, and BBQ spaghetti.

The Rock-n-Go is attached to Glady’s Diner and they share a dining room. They serve sandwiches, salads, and snacks. The menu also includes smoothies, iced coffees, and shaken iced teas.

Be sure to also visit Minnie Mae’s Sweets for hand-dipped ice cream, Root Beer floats, candy, and more! Choose from 16 delicious ice cream flavors.  

The good news is there are tickets available in a variety of price ranges. We chose the Ultimate VIP in order to enjoy the expert guide.

Tickets currently range in price from $48 up to $196 per person depending on the type of experience you prefer.

The most expensive option is called the Ultimate VIP Tour and includes:

The least expensive option is called Elvis Presleys Memphis + Planes. This option does not include the tour of the mansion.

Benefits of the Ultimate VIP

The most significant benefit of the Ultimate VIP package is the expert guide. They will tell you lots of tidbits and stories you won’t otherwise hear.

We got lucky and our tour guide was one of the archivists who doesn’t usually do tours but we were there during Elvis week and it was busy.

You will receive a set of headphones for wearing during the tour so you can hear your guide because they don’t talk out loud for other tourists to listen to the things you paid extra to learn.

Near the end of the mansion tour, you will be taken to the VIP Private Lounge to sit and relax for a few minutes. There is water available and a few displays for you to look at that others won’t see. We enjoyed it because it was very hot the day of our visit and it was nice to cool off.

After leaving the lounge, we were shuttled down to the only building on the property which isn’t original to the home. It was built to house memorabilia and archives.

If you are not doing the Ultimate VIP Tour, you won’t come to this archives building.

Here, you get to see up close some of Elvis’s personal possessions and will be allowed to touch one thing. On our visit that thing was one of Elvis’ guitars.

Also part of the Ultimate VIP package is a meal voucher to one of the restaurants on the Elvis Memphis campus. We ate at Vernon’s and it was very good.

Save time and buy your tickets online before you go. You can print them or have them available on your cell phone when you get there. If you have the QR code open on your phone, the ticket agent will scan it quickly and you can go through the line. They will scan the code for each ticket you purchased.

You are allowed to visit the Meditation Garden which is Elvis’s burial site during a one-hour time frame each morning. Visitor walk-up times are daily from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. All guests must enter the gates by 8:30 a.m. to walk up, and guests must leave the mansion grounds before Graceland tours start.

Elvis, Gladys, Vernon, his Grandmother who he lovingly called ‘Dodger’, and his grandson, Benjamin is buried there. You will also see a memorial marker for Elvis’s twin brother, Jessie, who died at birth.

Where to stay

The Guesthouse, built in 2016, is a quite beautifully equipped, luxurious hotel decorated to reflect the colorful style of Elvis Presley. Located literally next door to Graceland, you can walk over to the mansion.

The gorgeous furniture in the lobby is designed to pay homage to the high collars of Elvis stage wear.

The Graceland RV Park & Campground is located on 19 acres just off Elvis Presley Boulevard. It is part of the Graceland Campus.

The Memphis campgrounds feature:

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of dining options located in the general area around Graceland or the Guesthouse. There are two restaurants inside the hotel but if you are staying a full week you will get tired of those. Their food is good but the prices are on the high side and the menus are limited.

We drove down to Southaven, Ms . for shopping. There is a nice Tanger Outlet there and we had a fun day shopping. It’s only about 11 miles from the Guesthouse so not far at all.

There are more dining options in this same area where the Tanger Outlets are. We went to a little pizza place where the food and service were both good and it was budget friendly.

Be sure to go to Marlowe’s Ribs and Restaurant which is just a few blocks down the street from Graceland.

They will come and pick you up in their pink limousine and bring you back. It’s a fun adventure and the food is quite good.

Graceland is the second most visited home in the U.S., second only to the White House. Of course, you want to get the most out of your visit. Use these tips to plan your trip to Graceland.

• Wear comfortable shoes. There is a lot of walking involved.
• You are allowed to have bottled water in the mansion but no food.
• Flash photography is not allowed. Snap all the photos you want without the flash.
• Graceland is typically less busy in the afternoons, especially after 2:00 p.m.
• The last mansion tour of the day begins at 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m., depending on the day of the week and time of year.
• Bring a sharpie. You can sign the famous Graceland wall.
• The Graceland gates close at 5 p.m., that is when you can get a picture of the closed gates or early in the morning.
• Walking up to Elvis’s grave is free. You are only allowed to do that between 7:30-8:30 am before tours begin.
• The mansion tour takes about an hour to an hour and a half.
• You can easily spend most of a day touring the mansion and the entertainment complex with a break for lunch at one of the restaurants.
• Take cash for tips if you plan to tip the driver of the free shuttle.
• Use #graceland when sharing
• If you plan to visit during Elvis Week, book everything in advance and buy tickets to the shows in advance.
• Visit during Elvis week and buy tickets to the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Finals. The concerts are fabulous.

Within America’s vast wealth of national treasures, Graceland stands out as a timeless icon of rock and roll. If you’re exploring the South on a Southern musical road trip , visiting Graceland is a must!

Sure, Memphis, Tennessee has a lot of things to see and do, but those in the know head straight to Elvis country. Of course, to really experience this amazing piece of national history in all of its glory, you’ll need our tips for visiting Graceland.

Thankfully, My Itchy Travel Feet featured contributor, Debi Lander from ByLanderSea , is here to tell us all about her recent time exploring Graceland, Elvis Presley’s famous home, as well as staying in the luxurious Graceland Guest House, which opened in 2016. Read on to discover her visiting Graceland tips.

Tips for Visiting Graceland

Elvis Presley shook the music industry in the 1950s. He rattled and rolled his way to the top, becoming the King of Rock’ n’ Roll.

I, however, was battling traffic on a drive west from Nashville toward Memphis. I kept hearing the lyrics of Paul Simon’s Graceland playing in my head, “I’m going to Graceland, Graceland—in Memphis, Tennessee, I’m going to Graceland.”

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi , on January 8, 1935, in a two-room house built by his father, grandfather and uncle. They were very poor. Many are surprised to learn Elvis had a twin brother, but unfortunately, he was stillborn.

When Elvis turned 13, his father moved the family to Memphis in hopes of securing a better job. But, Elvis had even bigger dreams, he intended to become a legend. Armed with his guitar and influenced by Captain Marvel in the comic books, Elvis envisioned himself with the character’s signature lightning bolt, hairdo and cape.

In 1953, after graduating from high school, Elvis used his own money to cut a demo record. In 1954, he recorded again, this time at the renowned Sun Studios in Memphis.

By 1955, RCA signed him into a contract, and in 1957, the young star, at age 22, bought himself a house and named it Graceland. He made sure to include a bedroom on the first floor for his parents.

I have to admit, I wasn’t a huge Elvis fan, but I was curious. Those lyrics in the Graceland song seemed to get it right again, “For reasons I cannot explain, there’s some part of me wants to see Graceland.”

On top of the curiosity, I’d heard about a 2017, $45 million, 200,000-square foot state-of-the-art Elvis Entertainment complex across the street from the Gates of Graceland.

Staying at the Guest House at Graceland

So, it was afternoon by the time my friend, Judy and I arrived in Memphis. We went directly to our hotel, the Guest House at Graceland . Another new project, this 450-room luxury resort adjacent to the Presley home, opened in 2016.

The hotel plays an Elvis theme through colors, style, and small details. I was afraid the place might be tacky, but the facility looms tasteful—and fun.

The outdoor heart-shaped firepit is called the Hunka Burning Love. TCB logos are discreetly tucked around, Elvis’ motto for taking care of business.

High-backed chairs in the lobby are designed to resemble the collars on Elvis’ capes. And peanut butter and banana sandwiches are served at 10 pm – his favorite nighttime snack.

For dinner, we’d wanted to go to downtown Memphis, but our reservations went missing, and plans got changed. Judy and I took the concierge’s advice and climbed into a pink Cadillac that took us to dinner at Marlowe’s , a BBQ joint nearby.Fun!

Evenings at the Graceland Guest House feature live music. We watched a performance from a guy who sounded exactly like Elvis, but in no way looked the part. He pulled us listeners into the songs and had many dancing.

Afterward, we enjoyed a leisurely night of watching Elvis on TV. If you want the full Elvis experience, this is the place to stay.

Guide to Graceland Tours

Tours of the Colonial Revival-Style home begin at the Welcome Center in the massive complex. Those staying at the Guest House take a shuttle.

Your budget might get rattled when you see the admission prices, but based on a full day’s entertainment, the tour and exhibits, just roll with it!

We took the VIP tour that included no waiting in lines, worth considering if you visit during busy times. (FYI—It’s almost always crowded, about 21 million have toured Graceland since it opened to the public in 1982.) Purchasing VIP tickets in advance is a good idea.

After watching an introductory movie, you hop a shuttle over to the mansion and begin the house tour. Instead of a guide, you’re loaned an iPad and headset, available in many languages.

You listen as John Stamos and Lisa Marie (Elvis’ daughter) provide information for a self-guided tour. Enter through the front door, flanked by stained glass panels. Upon entering, I felt I was in a pretty normal home.

Then, I walked around the first floor seeing the living room, music room, parent’s bedroom, dining room and kitchen before going downstairs. Here you stop in a billiard room where the walls are lined with hundreds of yards of folded fabric. The TV room sports three televisions – so Elvis could watch the major networks just like President Johnson.

You proceed back up to view the infamous Jungle Room, really just an animal-themed space. The public cannot visit the bedrooms on the second floor, so you exit to the rear of the property. If at any time, you want additional details, you can push a button to hear more.

The tour then winds through Vernon’s office, Elvis’ Dad, who handled his business affairs after Col. Tom Parker, the stables, handball court, trophy room and small museum.

The path ends at the graves of Elvis and his parents. By the time you get there, you have embraced the King.

I was somewhat surprised to find the memorials emotional; do I dare say I couldn’t help falling in love? I now understand why devoted fans make the pilgrimage. (FYI—Before the massive expansion project, tours ended here, but trust me, your visit is far from over.)

By today’s standards Graceland remains a lovely but dated home, indeed not an extravagant showplace. That’s the thing, you do feel welcomed into Graceland as if Elvis himself were inviting you to sit and talk.

It’s the humbler side of the performer with deep family roots. I think that’s why visiting Graceland in person is memorable.

The Elvis Entertainment Complex

When you are ready, a bus shuttles you back across the street. Browse your way through the Presley Motors Automobile Museum, The Entertainer Career Museum and Elvis Discovery Exhibits. Here, you discover the flamboyant entertainer, the on-stage Elvis, as if he dons the costumes and becomes that superhero from his childhood comic books.

Most folks begin strolling around the car displays, including the legendary pink Cadillac that Elvis gave to his mother a year after his purchase. Other notables include a 1975 Dino Ferrari, 1973 Stutz Blackhawk, and cars from his movies. (Ladies, if you are having trouble convincing your man to go to Graceland, this area may change his mind.)

The glass-encased costumes, displayed in chronological order, show off the star’s ostentatious outfits; nearly all are the jumpsuit style with large jeweled belts and capes. Often a video of the concert plays in the background, so you see Elvis wearing it during a performance.

Also displayed are the military uniforms Elvis wore while stationed in Germany. Still, another room shows the influence Elvis made on other performers and their outfit designs.

The space devoted to gold and platinum records and numerous awards truly overwhelms. The walls soar high overhead and are lined with glittering records and memorabilia.

The collection strengthens the validity of Elvis’ successful career and his impact on the entertainment community during his rather short life. Elvis is the story of a true rags to riches American dream.

If you have enough energy left, you can tour his two airplanes. We did not as our feet were dragging. Plan on a full day to take everything in.

Should you become hungry while browsing the exhibits, you can eat at a few themed restaurants within the complex and, of course, linger in the souvenir shops bursting with everything Elvis.

Visit Tupelo, Mississippi to see Elvis’ birthplace

The next day we drove two hours south to Tupelo, Mississippi, to complete the Elvis story. We pulled into Johnny’s Drive-In for lunch. It’s a burger joint, unchanged since the days Elvis ate there. You’ll find a lot of Elvis memorabilia on the walls.

Next, we visited Tupelo’s homage to its hometown boy: the Elvis Presley Birthplace Park . The 15-acre setting features the wooden, two-room shotgun house where Elvis was born.

The museum is so small, it only takes about five minutes to tour. Each room had just one lightbulb. His family moved around a few times, losing the house, but Elvis grew up in this neighborhood, playing in the surrounding hills.

Of course, the museum is dedicated to the stories and memorabilia from Elvis’ early years. Presley’s childhood church, the place where he was introduced to gospel music, was moved to this site.

Inside, visitors experience a short multimedia presentation of the Assembly of God Pentecostal services of the 1940s. The memorial chapel next door, built after his death, was closed for repairs.

We strolled the paved Walk of Life Trail, noting events in the Presley family. One stop includes a life-size bronze statue of Elvis at 13, the age he left Tupelo.

Climb or drive up the hill to the Overlook, but don’t miss the two figures up there. The pair are entitled B ecoming . They symbolize the transformation from Elvis, The Boy, to Elvis, The Entertainer. Well done!

We then drove downtown and stopped by Tupelo Hardware, a surprisingly huge store. This is where Elvis’ Mama bought him his first guitar, a present for his 11th birthday. Apparently, when trying it out in the store, she asked him what he thought.

Elvis replied, “That’s alright Mama.” Who knew then that the guitar would set him on a path to fame and fortune?

Tips for a Graceland Tour

• Carefully read the difference between the various tour options. Buy your tickets online and print them out at home to save time. 
• Tours of the mansion take about an hour to an hour and a half while the exhibits take at least two more hours. Many make it an entire day, stopping for lunch. 
• There is a free activity book for children at Guest Services. 
• There is a special time for free-admission walk-up visits to the Meditation Garden at Graceland, where the gravesites of Elvis and his family are located. Visitor walk-up times are daily from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. All guests must enter the gates by 8:30 a.m. to walk up, and guests must leave the mansion grounds before Graceland tours start. There are no walk-ups on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. 

Tips for Visiting Tupelo

• Don’t miss the murals of Elvis and painted guitar-shaped artworks throughout the downtown area.
• The Visitor Center (free) includes a painting of the inspirational Captain Marvel comic book that many believe inspired Elvis’ extravagant looks.

On March 19, 1957,  Elvis Presley purchased a mansion on a 13.8-acre estate in Memphis, Tennessee . The year's first big celebration is held during the first weekend in January for a four-day celebration honoring Elvis' birthday (Jan. 8). Every summer, fans from around the world flock to Graceland for "Elvis Week," a week-long celebration of The King of Rock 'n' Roll's music, movies and legacy. This year, "Elvis Week" will take place from Aug. 11 through Aug. 17. The week culminates in the annual Elvis memorial candlelight vigil.

There are many different ways to experience Graceland. First you'll need to decide on a ticket option. Elvis superfans may want to opt for the Ultimate VIP Tour , which includes an expert Elvis tour guide, a meal voucher for Vernon's Smokehouse, a look inside Elvis' planes, a self-guided tour at Elvis' custom jets and full access to Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex, featuring the Presley Motors Automobile Museum, the Elvis: the Entertainer Career Museum, self-guided tours of the Elvis Discovery exhibits and an exclusive VIP exhibit. In addition, you'll also receive an exclusive photo opportunity, access to a private lounge inside Elvis Presley's Memphis, a keepsake backstage pass and more. The Ultimate VIP Tour costs $174 per person and the tour takes about four hours to complete.

If you want something a little more budget-friendly, there's the Elvis Entourage VIP Tour , which allows you to skip the line with a VIP shuttle and offers an audio-guided tour of the Graceland mansion. This option also offers full access to Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex and a self-guided tour of the Presley Motors Automobile Museum, the Elvis: the Entertainer Career Museum, Elvis Discovery exhibits and an exclusive VIP exhibit. The Elvis Entourage VIP Tour costs $99 per person.

The Elvis Experience Tour includes a tour of the mansion as well as access to exhibits showcasing Elvis' career, automobiles, wardrobe, gold records and more. This tour is priced at $61 per person.

The least expensive tour option is the Graceland Mansion Only Tour , which will only allow you access to the mansion. There's still plenty to see, including Presley's personal family artifacts. At just $41 per person, it's a bargain.

Bottom line: if you're only interested in walking through the King's house, the Mansion Only tour might be your best bet. You'll still get to see Elvis' music room, TV room, the Graceland dining room and my personal favorite, the Jungle Room. But if your tour of Graceland isn't complete without a look at Elvis' jumpsuits, pink Cadillac or the pink Jeep he drove in Blue Hawaii , make sure your tour includes Elvis Presley's Memphis.

If you're just passing through Memphis or just want to visit Presley's grave, Graceland's Meditation Garden offers free walk-up visits from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.. The garden includes the grave sites of Elvis Presley as well as his parents and grandmother.

If you purchase a ticket to Graceland online, be sure to bring a photo ID and the credit card you used to purchase the ticket to the ticket office upon arrival.

Where to Eat:

There's no shortage of good eats in Memphis. For the direct Elvis connection, try Elvis' favorite — the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich at Gladys' Diner (named for mama Presley herself), located inside Graceland.

Of course, no trip to Memphis is complete without getting some authentic Memphis BBQ. Hit up Central BBQ on South Main, Payne's Bar-B-Q in Midtown or Pollard's Bar-B-Q in Whitehaven. You won't be disappointed.

Where to Shop:

A trip to Graceland calls for some Elvis merch. Visit the official Graceland store  to buy everything from Elvis t-shirts to rhinestone-embellished Elvis socks.

But as you would expect, Elvis gift shops in Memphis don't end with Graceland. Venture out to Boulevard Souvenirs (located across the street from Graceland) to pick up Memphis memorabilia and Elvis collectors items.

Elvis has left the building - so go and tour it! One of the greatest attractions in Memphis, Tennessee is Graceland - the former home of Elvis Presley. It is a stunning mansion on a 13.8-acre estate and is open to the public. While one can't stay at the Graceland mansion, Graceland offers two accommodation options for visitors to choose from. After one as explored the mansion and marveled at the legacy of the man who changed Rock 'n' Roll forever, stay at Graceland's AAA Four-Diamond resort hotel called The Guest House At Graceland or at their campground up the boulevard.

The Guest House At Graceland

This is a full-service hotel with some 450 spacious rooms, two restaurants, and even a 464 seat theater for live performances and movies. It is elegant and luxurious and the gateway to visiting the Elvis mansion. For prices and availability see their website .

“The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office looked into the Graceland matter, and it quickly became apparent that this was a matter best suited for federal law enforcement. We have faith in our federal partners and know they will handle this appropriately," director of communications for the Tennessee Attorney General's Office Amy Lannom Wilhite said in a statement.

On May 23, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said his office would be looking into Naussany Investments and Private Lending , which was the entity behind the attempted sale. Skrmetti's office would not specify which federal organization or entities would be taking over the investigation.

The Graceland foreclosure case has been a peculiar one. Three foreclosure notices were published by Naussany Investments beginning on May 6, citing a public auction for the historic Memphis estate. On May 22, the foreclosure sale was halted by Chancellor JoeDae Jenkins after a Shelby County Chancery Court hearing .

Following the hearing on May 24, Memphis-based law firm Morton & Germany filed the court-ordered injunction bond. Morton & Germany is representing Riley Keough and The Promenade Trust, which controls ownership of the Graceland estate. Keough is the daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley . Morton & Germany filed the countersuit regarding the sale and said the foreclosure claims were fraudulent.

Before the hearing, Morton & Germany had not received any communications with Naussany Investments representatives. (Addresses associated with the company were all linked to P.O. boxes.) The morning before the May 22 hearing, the Shelby County Chancery Court received a letter from a Gregory Naussany asking the court to delay the hearing. ( The court denied that request .) Following the May 22 hearing, the alleged Gregory Naussany emailed The Commercial Appeal and claimed to drop the case.

That email and correspondence was riddled with grammatical errors . Additionally, neither the Shelby County Chancery Court nor Morton & Germany offices had received communication with any Naussany Investments representatives. On May 25, The Commercial Appeal received a second email from an alleged Kurt Naussany, who is named in the original lawsuit along with a Carolyn Williams.

That second email was written in Spanish and claimed the alleged Naussany Investments firm was the "Yahoo Ring Leader of Nigeria." The New York Times and The Daily Memphian also reported receiving similar emails from Kurt Naussany. The emails to other media outlets were written in different languages and contained slightly differing details, however, still claimed responsibility for predatory and fraudulent behavior .

• MIKE MORAN : master recording engineer on several Elvis albums, including Elvis’ last recording sessions in the Jungle Room at Graceland. Mike will share his stories at Elvis: Behind the Music on August 17.
• RON STRAUSS : co-pilot for Elvis’ Lisa Marie airplane. Ron will appear at Conversations on Elvis on August 15.
• ROBERT GORDON : GRAMMY-winning music historian who wrote the liner notes for the newly announced Elvis release MEMPHIS . Robert will speak at Elvis: Behind the Music on August 17.
• JILLIAN CARDARELLI : country singer and songwriter whose single “If I Could Talk to Elvis” featuring Larry Strickland hit #1 on CMT 12-pack countdown. She will perform as part of the Elvis Fan Choice Awards on August 14 and Elvis Unplugged on August 16.
• MARA JUSTINE : singer and songwriter who appeared as a finalist on NBC’s America’s Got Talent , and later made a significant impact on American Idol and placed 3 rd on The Voice . She will perform as part of the Elvis: The Next Generation Show on August 11.

In addition, more details for the Elvis Fan Choice Awards on August 14 have been announced. Having charmed audiences during NBC's Christmas at Graceland in 2023 , Wilson will return to NBC to perform on the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular.

Hosted by American Ninja Warrior sideline reporter  Zuri Hall and Grammy-nominated Mickey Guyton, the 48th annual Macy's fireworks boasts musical performances, special guests, and a spectacular firework display bound to dazzle and delight. Wilson will take the stage against the stunning New York City backdrop — along with Amber Mark, Brandy Clark, Luis Fonsi, Mickey Guyton, Tanner Adell, and The War And Treaty.

Lainey Wilson Singing on NBC's Toby Keith: American Icon

NBC is hosting a two-hour concert celebration called  Toby Keith: American Icon , to celebrate the country star in the wake of his February death . Featuring some of the nation's most cherished country acts, the concert special will be filmed in Nashville as his fellow artists come together to share their love for the legend and his music.

Wilson and Carrie Underwood will headline the concert, which will also feature performances from fellow country stars Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Ashley McBryde, Parker McCollum, Jelly Roll , Darius Rucker, and The War And Treaty.

Toby Keith: American Icon  will air on NBC on Wednesday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans interested in attending the live concert can purchase tickets on Ticketmaster beginning June 28.  

Lainey Wilson's Country's Cool Again Concert Tour

Wilson will spend a large chunk of 2024 on the road rocking out with fans on her Country's Cool Again tour. The tour includes shows nationwide and runs from May to November 2024.

“Nothing gets me buzzin’ like putting on a show and singing along with the crowd,” Wilson said in a statement (via Live Nation Entertainment ). “I want to give a big thank you to all of the fans who have continuously showed up and showed out this year. We can’t wait to see you nationwide on the 'Country’s Cool Again' Tour!"

Lainey Wilson's Upcoming Album  Whirlwind

Wilson's latest project is her August 2024 studio release, Whirlwind , which focuses on her "whirlwind" experience of becoming a genre icon. Ahead of the album, Wilson released "Out of Oklahoma," which is featured on the Twisters soundtrack.

"The last two years of my life, especially, it’s been a whirlwind, and that’s the name of the record. I was like, ‘We have to name the record  Whirlwind because that’s what it’s been,’” Wilson explained on TODAY . “But [I’m] trying to keep one foot on the ground. I feel like my life has changed, but I haven’t, and I think that’s because I keep my people close.”

But how did this now-celebrated artist achieve this level of success? Keep reading to look back at her rise to stardom.

How Lainey Wilson went from Hannah Montana impersonator to recording her first album

Born in 1992 in Baskin, Louisiana, Wilson's love for country music began young.

She sang publicly for the first time at her kindergarten graduation and wrote her first song before she turned 10, she told TODAY ' s Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb , adding that her grandmother sparked her love for music.

"I just felt at home onstage, and I knew that this was something I wanted to do," Wilson told Songwriter Universe in June 2021. "Then, when I was 11, my daddy showed me a few chords on the guitar, and that opened the door for my songwriting. And around that time, my parents and I drove through Nashville, and they took me to the Grand Ole Opry. And I remember having an overwhelming feeling that Nashville is where I’m supposed to be."

One of Wilson's earliest gigs was as a Hannah Montana impersonator: Throughout high school, she performed the Hannah Montana soundtrack across the South as a version of  Miley Cyrus ' iconic alter ego. On several occasions, Wilson would open her Hannah Montana act with performances of her original songs.

“I’d be like, ‘Can Lainey Wilson open the show?’” Wilson recalled in her December 2021 Rolling Stone interview. “They’d be like, ‘Who’s Lainey?’ I’d be like, ‘The person you hired to be Hannah Montana!’”

Wilson crossed off her dream of moving to Nashville following high school, honing her craft in honky-tonks around the city. For several years, Wilson lived in a camper trailer in the parking lot of a recording studio owned by a family friend as she found her footing in the industry.

"There’s a lot of days I probably should have hooked it up and drove it back to Baskin," Wilson told Rolling Stone . "I guess I am a little borderline crazy because it never crossed my mind, even on those dark days where I felt like I could not get my foot in the door [no] matter what I did. It wasn’t until year seven that I signed a publishing deal."

While performing various shows around the city, Wilson released a self-titled album in 2014 and later scored a deal with the label Lone Chief .

Was Lainey Wilson on The Voice ?

Wilson tried out for The Voice, but didn't make it to Blind Auditions. She also tried out for American Idol several times.

"I finally made it on American Idol ," Wilson said while co-hosting Country Countdown USA in May 2023 after performing on the American Idol  Season 21 finale. "I tried out seven times... never made it past the first round."

"I also tried out for The Voice ," she added. "I'm grateful my story ended the way that it did."

She later performed at  The Voice Season 25 finale , delivering a show-stopping performance of "Hang Tight Honey" from Whirlwind  in May 2024.

Following the performance, Coach Reba McEntire joined Wilson onstage with an invitation to the Grand Ole Opry.

“I have heard that I’ve inspired you and what you’ve done so far, and I am thrilled if I had anything to do with your career because you are blowing it up...” McEntire told a tearful Wilson. “I couldn’t be more proud to be the one that helps you continue to bridge the gap between our generations, keep them all going. I’d like to be the person to invite you to be an official member of the Grand Ole Opry.”

Wilson later discussed the milestone moment on TODAY With Hoda & Jenna ahead of her performance for the Citi Summer Concert Series . Wilson revealed that she had no clue what McEntire was going to give her after her performance.

“My birthday was, like, a couple days before this, and I thought maybe she was bringing me out a cupcake or something,” Wilson revealed. “And I thought, ‘Dang, Reba’s giving me a cupcake. That’s so cool.’ And then next thing I know, she’s got this belt buckle."

Lainey Wilson's Tougher and Self-Titled EP

Wilson hit the country music charts in 2016 with her sophomore studio album, Tougher . The 10-track album was a collaboration between Wilson and producer Frank Foster and peaked at No. 44 on Billboard 's Top Country Albums .

Wilson followed up the album in 2018 with a self-titled EP of six new singles. While Wilson was still polishing her sonic brand during these releases, the "Tougher" singer fondly reflects on them.

"It’s so cool to go back and listen to the music that I put out years ago," Wilson told Songwriter Universe . "I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m seeing that growth in my writing. But more importantly, just me as a human, the more life you live, the better songs you write."

Lainey Wilson's Songs: "Things a Man Oughta Know" and Sayin' What I'm Thinkin' 

After signing with Broken Bow Records in 2018, Wilson skyrocketed to success with the 2020 release of "Things a Man Oughta Know." The track is regarded as Wilson's breakout single after it soared to the top of the country charts, peaking at No. 1 spot on Billboard  Country Airplay and No. 3 on Hot Country Songs.

Wilson's third studio album, 2021's Sayin' What I'm Thinkin' , featured the smash single.

Wilson's third album featured several critically acclaimed singles, such as "LA" — a nod to her Louisiana roots—and "WWDD," a song centered around her god-tier respect for Dolly Parton .

Lainey Wilson's Bell Bottom Countr y 

Wilson gained even more momentum with her 2022 album,  Bell Bottom Country. Wilson teased the album's release with the lead single "Heart Like a Truck," which peaked at No. 16 on Billboard' s Country Airplay charts. The album is celebrated for its infectious combination of 70s funk and country-rock, with the singles "Wildflowers and Wild Horses" and "Watermelon Moonshine" creating a holy trinity of country-fried hits.

Not only did Wilson have a hand in writing the entirety of the album's 16-track lineup, but she also recorded a cover of 4 Non Blondes' energizing hit "What's Up? (What's Going On?)" for the release. The album's title is inspired by Wilson's affinity for bell-bottom pants and unique country sound.

"Sure, I love a good pair of bell bottoms, but  Bell Bottom Country,  to me, has always been about the flare and what makes someone unique — I have really embraced mine, and I hope y'all can hear that across this project," Wilson told Taste of Country .

Bell Bottom Countr y was a grand slam, winning Best Country Album at the 66th Grammy Awards — her first career Grammy. The album also earned several other honors , including Album of the Year at the 58th Academy of Country Music Awards and 57th Annual Country Music Association Awards.

Was Lainey Wilson on Yellowstone ?

Wilson made her acting debut in Season 5 of Yellowstone , guest starred in four Season 5 episodes as Abby, an aspiring country star who fell in love with rancher heart-throb Ryan (Ian Bohen).

Series co-creator Taylor Sheridan wrote the role specifically for Wilson, who performed "Watermelon Moonshine" as the free-spirited Abby in an episode and appeared on the show's soundtrack. 

"(Sheridan) said he wanted me to pretty much be myself, which is a dream come true, especially when you're trying to introduce yourself to people," Wilson told  USA Today in December 2022.  "All I got from him at that time was that I would play a musician who would fall in love with one of the boys. He didn't even tell me which one."

Lainey Wilson's Awards

Wilson has won six Academy of Country Music Awards since 2022, taking home 2022's New Female Artist and sweeping the 2023 ceremony by winning Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, Music Event of the Year, and Visual Media of the Year.

She's also won seven Country Music Association Awards throughout her tenure, including Entertainer of the Year in 2023. (The last female artist to score this honor was Taylor Swift in 2011.)

In 2024, Wilson won Best Country Album at the 66th Grammy Awards for Bell Bottom Country. She previously scored a Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance with Jelly Roll for their 2023 performance of "Save Me" at the 58th Academy of Country Music Awards.

Wilson was formally inducted into the Opry in June 2024.

After winning four ACMAs in 2023, Wilson chatted with People about her winding road to fame.

"All I ever wanted was to be part of the country music industry. I remember just dreaming about that, like, 'Oh my gosh, it would be so cool to just know these people and call them and get advice,'" Wilson explained. "I feel like country music has finally decided to love me back as much as I've been loving it for my whole life. It feels good to be recognized."
