Hidden Depths Canal Cruises

Join us at Hidden Depths Canal Cruises for a trip down the canal, and celebrate your special day with family and friends in a unique and memorable way. Our trips are based in the King's Cross, Camden and Islington areas, which provide scenic routes of the Regent's Canal and offer the opportunity to cruise through the 200 year old, mile-long Islington tunnel, one of the longest in Britain! You can also experience the ingenuity of canal locks which date back to the Industrial Revolution and make it possible for water to travel uphill!

If your party is an intimate group of 12 or less, Lapwing would be the vessel for you; it's just £110 per hour (minimum 2hr booking period), and food, alcohol/drinks and music cab brought on board.

If, however, your group is larger and consists of up to 42 persons, then it would be our bigger boat, Freda - a Lapwing lookalike but longer! The cost is £210 per hour (based upon 42 people, only £5 per person), and again, you can bring along food, alcohol/drinks and music.

We also have themed trips for Hallowe'en and Christmas and the boats are elaborately decorated for both occasions!

Should we get the odd shower, worry not, both boats have covers which can be attached at a moment's notice.

Booking in advance highly recommended by email or phone: [email protected] 07456084584

Visit King's Cross

Tourist attractions of king's cross, the regent’s canal.

The Regent’s Canal has been London’s other water highway since 1820. It is a peaceful haven well-loved by boaters, walkers and cyclists to escape the capital’s busy streets. In a walk along the canal you will find a canal tunnel, wildlife and boats.

The canal with towing path on the left, modern building on the right, boats on the bank

Together with the Grand Junction Canal and the associated routes to the Midlands and north, The Regent’s Canal carried huge quantities of timber, coal, building materials and foodstuffs into and out of London. In fact long-distance traffic continued to use the canal into the 1960s. However, by the time the canal was nationalised in 1948, commercial traffic had started to dwindle.

Tunnel portal with canal to the fore. A small light at other end of tunnel is visible.

The canal links a diverse cross-section of London’s attractions. From the colourful collection of narrowboats at Little Venice, it runs on through Regent’s Park. Here it is overlooked by a vast aviary – part of London Zoo. In Camden, it passes the craft stalls and quirky clothing shops of the famous market, a centre for London’s alternative culture. After the buzz of Camden there are quieter reaches, but the canal is still at the heart of a vibrant cultural scene. As it continues towards the East End, it passes close by many small independent art galleries and studios, displaying exciting and cutting-edge work.

Do not miss the chance to walk along The Regent’s Canal and join one the the guided boat trips  through the tunnel, with a museum guide. Tickets include a museum visit at a very reasonable charge.

LDN Explores: The Beautiful Regent’s Canal Walk from King’s Cross to Little Venice

Last updated on June 17th, 2023 at 10:18 pm

Following Regent’s Canal from Kings Cross to Little Venice is a beautiful way to spend the day, and really portrays the natural beauty of London. This Regent’s Canal walk will take you from King’s Cross through Camden, Primrose Hill, Regent’s Park (where you might get a glimpse of the animals at London Zoo if you’re lucky!) and Little Venice, before ending up at Paddington Basin. With the sun beaming down we definitely forgot we were in London at some points! This is a fabulous day out whether you’re familiar with London or not. If you’ve not visited before or are only in London for a short period of time this is a great way to see lots of different areas without needing to hop on the tube.

Regent’s Canal begins in Limehouse Basin, East London and runs to Little Venice, providing a link from the Paddington Basin arm of the Great Union Canal to the River Thames. You can begin the Regent’s Canal walk at Limehouse and follow it through Hackney, Shoreditch and Islington, however the canal totals 14km so would be a hefty trek! I’ve popped an overview of the Kings Cross to Little Venice route on a map below (the blue line is the canal), so you can see whereabouts in London the Regent’s Canal Walk will take you.

This Regent’s Canal walk is around two hours and five miles long, including a lil detour up Primrose Hill. But of course this depends on how fast you walk and if you make any cafe/beer/photo stops!

If you’re looking for more walking routes in London check out the London Hidden Walks book

Regent's Canal Walk Map

Regent’s Canal Walk: The Route

Begin at king’s cross.

Beginning at King’s Cross means you can fuel up with brunch in Granary Square and explore the shops at Coal Drop’s Yard before you begin. You’re spoilt for choice for brunch in Granary Square, with over fifteen restaurant options offering a brunch menu. For future visits I would make a booking in advance as many weren’t taking walk-ins on a Sunday morning. We managed to wait for a table at Caravan , where the fruit pancakes and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast didn’t disappoint.

There are a great mix of independent and chain stores at Coal Drops yard, however I would recommend window shopping for today; unless you want to lug shopping bags along on the walk with you! Once you’re ready to get going, the canal isn’t hard to find from Kings Cross and is signposted. You want to head West from Granary Square or Coal Drops Yard and you’ll meet the Regent’s Canal Towpath.

Regent's Canal Walk; Begin at Granary Square

King’s Cross to Camden

This first stretch of Regent’s Canal is probably the most secluded part of the walk, and definitely where we felt most like we weren’t in London. Look out for the ‘Modern Houses’ on the left of the canal, these Grade II listed townhouses make a unique sight, resembling the back of an Airstream trailer overlooking the canal. After around twenty minutes you’ll reach Camden, and will see the lock before you approach the market. We added a bit of time onto the walk as we stopped to watch a canal boat going through the lock. Why is watching the water rise inside a lock so exciting no matter how old you are?

Once you’ve reached Camden market cross through the food stalls and pick up the towpath again on the other side. Now’s the time to grab food or a drink, and use the toilet if you need it. Camden market is one of my favourites in London, with so many stalls to look through and banging food, so if you have the time to spare I would definitely recommend a wander.

Regent's Canal Walk: Camden Market

Camden to Primrose Hill

After emerging from Camden Market the next part of the route is through Primrose Hill, before reaching Regent’s Park. Primrose Hill gave me such life goals; with the neat rows of pretty houses and fancy cars lining the roads it would make a gorgeous place to live. Continue to follow the canal’s towpath for half a mile until reaching Regent’s Park Road, where a detour up Primrose Hill itself is a must.

One of the Royal Parks, Primrose Hill stands almost 63 metres above sea level. You’re basically guaranteed good views, as it’s a protected viewpoint in London, meaning that there is a legal requirement to preserve the view from one location to another. In Primrose Hill’s case this is from the summit to St Paul’s Cathedral and to the Palace of Westminster. The trees are also kept low so as to not obscure the view. All this effort must have been worth it, as the view from Primrose Hill has just been voted the most scenic view in London.

Regent's Canal Walk

Following The Canal Through Regent’s Park

Once you’ve thoroughly taken in the view, head back down the hill to join Regent’s Canal again at Regent’s Park. Rather than heading back to Regent’s Park Road you want to head South-East towards Prince Albert Road, where you’ll see a bridge that takes you into the park.

The Regent’s Park section of the Regent’s Canal walk is just under a mile long and will take around twenty minutes. Keep your eyes peeled as there’s so much to see! Shortly after joining the path, you cannot miss London Zoo. We spotted hyenas and warthogs as we passed through, however depending on the day you can also see into the Snowdon Aviary and the monkeys if you’re super lucky!

Past the zoo, you’ll also spot a giant white house (it doesn’t feel right calling this a house; a palace would be a more accurate description) with sprawling gardens backing onto the canal. This is Winfield House, the official residence of the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom and the second-largest private gardens behind Buckingham Palace. As you’re nearing the end of the park, keep an eye out for London Central Mosque, a beautiful gold domed building.

Like this? You’ll love our cycling route from Canary Wharf to Greenwich .

Regent's Canal Walk: Little Venice

Regent’s Park to Little Venice

Upon exiting Regent’s Park, head towards Park Road (you won’t miss it, it’s a major A road) and cross over before picking up the towpath again. This stretch of the canal will again take around twenty minutes, through St John’s Wood to the pool pictured above at Little Venice. Whilst the houseboats lining the canal through St John’s Wood and Maida Vale are fascinating, make sure you also check out the houses on the other side of the road, as the architecture in this area is gorgeous.

Once you reach the pool pictured above, congratulations you’ve reached Little Venice and the end of this self-guided walk! Little Venice is a beautiful yet quirky area; once you spot the Puppet Theatre Barge you’ll know exactly what we’re on about. There are also cafes on barges, and a party barge sailed past whilst we were watching the world go by. Casual. Highly desirable, moorings in the area cost around £15k per year just to dock your boat, and once you’ve seen the area you’ll understand exactly why.

Regent's Canal Walk: self guided with map

That concludes our self-guided Regent’s Canal walking tour. I cannot recommend this enough, the perfect casual day out to explore numerous beautiful parts of London. If all this walking feels a bit too healthy for a weekend don’t you fear, there are plenty of opportunities to stop for a drink or bite to eat along the way.

If there’s still wind in your sails upon reaching Little Venice, why not extend the walk another half a mile or so to Paddington Basin? Enjoy!

Keep up with our latest adventures on Instagram .

Londoners Can Grab A FREE Margarita From A Canal Boat In King’s Cross Next Week

If you're feeling thirsty, find this canal boat in King's Cross next week. They're giving away 1,000 free margaritas!

Sam Barker

If we’re being honest, there’s almost nothing that we love more than free stuff … And we know you love free stuff too! Every week there seems to be a new giveaway or free event in London. These range from free pastries to free theatre tickets and beyond. But the latest giveaway to hit London is particularly down our street… A canal boat is set to moor up in King’s Cross next week and hand out 1,000 FREE margaritas !

Yes, you read that right, free margaritas! The pre-made cocktail brand MOTH is popping up on the water next week, and they’re bringing with them complimentary cans of their popular ready-to-drink margaritas .

Said Rob Wallis, MOTH’s co-founder :

“MOTH’s delicious canned cocktails have long been a favourite for summer sipping wherever you go – from festivals and garden parties to trips to the seaside – and now, we’re boarding the good ship MOTH to share the joy with Londoners. We know people are going to love discovering our zippy MOTH Margarita. Ready to drink, it’s as handy as a can of beer – and as ready to go as you are.”

How to get free margaritas

If you fancy a free cocktail next week, head on over to King’s Cross and find the MOTH-branded barge. You’ll find it perched next to the steps at Granary Square (where we’ll soon be treated to the return of Screen on the Canal ). All you have to do is walk up and claim your free drink!

a 'MOTH' branded canal boat by the steps in King's Cross

Londoners can nab the free margaritas on Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20, between 12-5pm . The cocktails will be available on a first-come-first-served basis – so don’t leave it too late! (Just leave work early… the free margaritas are worth it).

Oh and obviously – you have to be over 18… Duh…

Missed out on the giveaway? Grab some cocktail cans from their website .

Premier's 3-nation trip set to boost ties.

Premier Li Qiang will make official visits to New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia starting on Thursday, a significant diplomatic move that analysts said highlights China's efforts to further strengthen its relations with countries in the Asia-Pacific region amid rising economic and security challenges.

China hopes that the premier's visits, scheduled to run until June 20, will help enhance mutual understanding and trust and deepen pragmatic cooperation with the three countries, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a regular news conference on Tuesday in Beijing.

Lin said that during Li's visit to New Zealand, he will meet with Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro and have talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to exchange views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and New Zealand, and Beijing considers Wellington to be an important partner, he said.

China is New Zealand's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade worth almost NZ$38 billion ($23.28 billion) last year. Luxon said in a statement on Monday that Premier Li's visit is a valuable opportunity for exchanges in areas of cooperation between New Zealand and China.

"New Zealand and China engage where we have shared interests, and we speak frankly and constructively with each other where we have differences. Our relationship is significant, complex and resilient," Luxon said.

"The challenging global outlook makes it vital that we are sharing perspectives and engaging China on key issues that matter to New Zealand."

While in Australia, Li will co-chair the ninth China-Australia Annual Leaders' Meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra, and engage with people from various sectors of the country, Lin said. They will also engage with Chinese and Australian business leaders at the seventh China-Australia CEO Roundtable, he added.

The spokesman expressed China's willingness to work with Australia to jointly build a more mature, stable and productive comprehensive strategic partnership.

China has been Australia's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years. In 2023, China bought A$219 billion ($144.35 billion) of Australian exports, accounting for 32.5 percent of Australia's total exports, according to statistics from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Chinese investment in Australia reached almost A$88 billion by the end of last year.

However, bilateral relations were severely damaged due to the negative policies adopted by the previous Australian government toward China. The two countries have broken the ice since Albanese assumed office in 2022.

Li's visit follows Albanese's visit to China in November, when leaders of the two countries agreed to resume key bilateral dialogues and further cooperation in various fields. Over the past months, China has lifted trade curbs on Australian imports including wine, barley, beef and timber.

Speaking at a news conference at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday, Albanese said that Li's visit to Australia will be the first by a Chinese premier since 2017 and "represents another important step in stabilizing our relationship with China".

"Premier Li Qiang's visit to Australia is an important opportunity to engage directly on key issues for both our nations," he said. "Australia continues to pursue a stable and direct relationship with China, with dialogue at its core."

On China-Malaysia relations, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin said that China and Malaysia are traditionally friendly neighbors across the sea.

Both of them are developing countries in Asia and emerging economies, and they actively advocate Asian values of peace, cooperation, inclusiveness and integration, making important contributions to regional peace, prosperity and stability, he said.

During the visit to Malaysia, Li will meet with the Southeast Asian country's King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and hold talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Lin said. Li and Anwar will jointly attend the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia.

China looks forward to using this visit as an opportunity to enhance and expand cooperation in various fields with Malaysia, deepen the China-Malaysia community with a shared future, and work together to create a more brilliant bilateral relationship for the next 50 years, Lin added.
