Food & Drink

The famous Cavalier Hotel is set atop one of the highest hills in Virginia Beach and is one of the county’s most notable historic hotels. Although the hotel recently underwent an extensive renovation, the hotel still brims with elegance and hospitality. One unique feature this hotel has is its very own distillery.

Tarnished Truth Distilling Company is the United States’ only distillery located in a hotel. The company is operated from the back of the establishment and run by just six employees. Beginning with an idea eight years ago, Virginia Beach natives Andrew Yancey and Josh Canada set out to craft a Virginia Beach distillery.  The pair partnered with fellow native Bruce Thompson, and together, they brought their dream to life.

Tarnished Truth Distilling Company

The distillery sits where the original laundry facility for the hotel once was. Since the company distills a variety of spirits, many pieces of handmade equipment specific to each spirit are utilized. Every step of the process is done in the facility, including bottling and labeling.

Guests can tour the distillery to learn how the company makes its vodka, whiskey and bourbon. One of the six employees will take you through the facility and give you the inside scoop on how the equipment works and how they get the taste, color and consistency of the spirits. Once done with the tour, guests get to enjoy a tasting.

cavalier hotel tours

When the historic Cavalier Hotel opened in 1927, General J. Leslie Kincaid, president of the American Hotels Corporation, proclaimed, “It is the finest resort hotel in America, and I have seen them all.” It seemed as if the Cavalier Hotel put Virginia Beach on the map as America’s hottest beach resort destination.

As soon as you spy the hotel perched on the hill facing the Atlantic Ocean , you know you’ve arrived somewhere remarkable. Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello was the inspiration for the main entrance with a classical four-column portico and three stone steps.

If you arrive by car, you have the option to valet or self park. If you arrive via the Norfolk International Airport, you can rent a car, or take an Uber to the hotel.

Note: My stay at the Cavalier was hosted. All opinions are my own.

Queen guest room at the Cavalier.

A Glamorous Past Still Visible Today

I expected the Cavalier to be luxurious — I was not disappointed. There is an elegance that illuminates the Cavalier; from the moment I arrived I felt as if I was the most important guest in the house. Every detail of the recent restoration meticulously preserved the hotel’s glamorous past, whenever possible. In the Grand Lobby, terrazzo floors, colonial era woodwork, and a detailed plaster rotunda welcome guests. A glass of sparkling wine is offered at check-in.

No doubt, some of the glow from the Cavalier’s golden age lives on. In 1929, when the Cavalier Beach Club opened, it became an esteemed venue for big bands. Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, and Glen Miller all performed there. Every performance was broadcast live coast to coast. It’s easy to imagine dancing all night to the sounds of Glen Miller, or crooner Frank Sinatra.

The Cavalier became a favorite for celebrities and luminaries of the arts and letters. Ten U.S. presidents and many icons of the era stayed at the Cavalier. F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda were regulars on a long list of legendary figures who favored the Cavalier — names like Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Pro Tip: Notice the photographs of celebrities and other personalities hanging in the hallways on every floor of the hotel.

Originally, there were 195 guest rooms, but during the remodel, the decision was made to have fewer rooms. Today, there are 85 spacious guest rooms. The decor is fun, elegant, colorful, and comfortable, while catering to the needs of today’s traveler.

Dining Options At The Cavalier

There are several restaurant options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner — you will not go hungry. Tulus is a casual beachside cafe located at the Marriott property across the street. You can enjoy breakfast or lunch in a large, bright, and airy room, or outside with a beach view.

Becca is located at the Cavalier and serves modern garden-to-table cuisine in a beautiful setting. Seafood dishes are a good choice here. Try the oysters with fried green tomatoes and arugula. Becca is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch.

The Hunt Room at the Cavalier is open for dinner only. As you might expect, the theme here is casual food in a traditional setting. This is the perfect spot for late night drinks and a burger. On the weekends, the Hunt Room is open until 1 am.

Table at Orion's Rooftop restaurant.

Located at the Marriott , Orion’s Rooftop is the place to go for an elegant dinner with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. There’s outdoor seating when the weather allows, however, most tables in the main dining room have an ocean view.

I dined with friends, so I was able to try several entrees. I ordered the whole red snapper. Scored and lightly breaded in cornstarch then fried, it was light and flaky and easy to eat, in spite of looking a bit intimidating at first. The scoring made it easy to pull off chunks of fish and I soon gave up the utensils and ate with my fingers. We also tried the sushi made fresh on-site, and one of the most delicious pad thai I’ve ever tasted. If you’re a wine lover, note that Orion’s Rooftop has a deep list of over 600 bottles.

The Tarnished Truth Distillery

The Tarnished Truth opened in 2019 as the first distillery inside a hotel. Tarnished Truth produces several different bottles of bourbon along with vodka, gin, and a bourbon cream.

Book a tour of the distillery, it’s fun and educational. I’m not a big imbiber of spirits but I did a tasting after the tour. I loved the bourbon cream but the namesake Tarnished Truth was also delicious, smooth, and a bit smokey.

The name of the distillery is a nod to the stories surrounding the Cavalier. One of the more infamous stories is that former president Richard Nixon burned hours of Watergate tapes in the big fireplace of the Hunt Room. The truth shall remain unknown.

The Sea Hill spa at the Cavalier.

Other Amenities

If a wellness weekend is more your style, you can indulge at the Seahill Spa. There’s a full service hair and nail salon, sauna, and massage service, as well as facials and other body treatments.

The newly imagined Beach Club is located across the street and features a private beach with cabanas, towel and umbrella service, a beachside bar, and infinity pool.

Pro Tips: Any time of year is a great time to visit the Cavalier, but for good weather and fewer crowds, avoid summer and go from September through May. The hotel has a shuttle service that will drop you off at nearby attractions like the boardwalk. I took the shuttle to the Vibe, a colorful artsy neighborhood, and walked back to the hotel.

The Cavalier Hotel | A Legend Restored

cavalier hotel tours

Memories are a funny thing. Even as your own memories become faded with time, certain details can remain in bold print on the pages of your mind - the smell of your grandmother’s kitchen on a Saturday morning; the sound of the breeze finding its way through the leaves of the tree outside your open bedroom window; the feel of the cool grass under your feet on a hot summer night. When triggered, each seemingly insignificant detail is a time machine that leads straight back to that specific place and to that specific moment. All of the feelings and emotions of a split second of your existence rush back into your consciousness and, all too briefly, past and present become indistinguishable. All it takes is one small shred of a memory to remain in tact for it to endure a lifetime. Once it’s gone, however, it’s gone.

In 2012, the historic Cavalier Hotel , perched high on the hill at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, was facing demolition and, with it, the end of an era for all who have walked its prestigious halls. If the hotel was destroyed, so too would a crucial piece to all of the memories housed within it’s Flemish bond brick and limestone exterior.

Cavalier Hotel Opening

Opening to national acclaim in 1927, the “Grand Dame of the Shore” has played host to everyone from society’s elite of the 20s and 30s, to local families and friends gathering for weddings and reunions. Ten U.S. Presidents have walked through the hotel’s grand entrance, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and John F. Kennedy. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald swam laps in the filtered salt water plunge pool. Movie stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood like Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Ginger Rogers, Doris Day and Bob Hope have danced until dawn at The Cavalier Beach Club to sounds of Cab Calloway, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, and Frank Sinatra. Notorious gangster, Al Capone relaxed by the Hunt Room’s enormous fireplace. The United States Navy even took over the hotel during World War II and used it as a radar training school.

With such an intricate history, naturally ghosts are said to have been spotted by many who have walked through The Cavalier’s grand lobby. The piano in the opulent Crystal Ballroom would play with no one seated at it. A long lost cat could be heard scratching and meowing at guest room doors. A kind, old bellman had, on many occasions, been seen on the stairs leading from the fifth floor to the sixth, warning of ghosts ahead, only to vanish when guests turned to question him. Even famed brewer, Adolph Coors, whose lifeless body was found below his sixth story window in 1929, had been spotted walking the corridors in the dead of night.

To lose The Cavalier would have meant losing a piece of our collective memory and, for many, an important reminder of days past. Fortunately, thanks to a last-minute purchase from local hospitality and real estate management company, Gold Key | PHR, an extensive 4-year renovation has restored the legendary hotel to its former grandeur, preserving it and all of the stories within.

Historic Restoration

In March 2018, The Cavalier reopened as a distinguished member of Marriott's Autograph Collection. While the renovation worked wonders in bringing the hotel into the 21st Century, in many ways it can still be enjoyed as it originally was by all who walked its floors before us. Enter through the grand lobby, which has been returned to its pre-war form with Jeffersonian-style woodworking and original terrazzo flooring. Spend your nights dancing and drinking under the magnificently-high ceilings and large windows of the Crystal Ballroom, which has been painstakingly restored to its former grandeur. Dine in the historic Hunt Room, where guests who once hunted native fowl, such as ducks, on the original property’s 4,000 acres of land, would bring their bags of game to be prepared by the hotel’s masterful chefs. The historic grand fireplace in the center of the eatery, which was found to have been structurally compromised, has been restored brick-by-brick, with each brick being placed in its original order and location. Relax for awhile in the Raleigh Room, the hotel’s new take on the original Grand Salon, with plush seating, drink carts, game tables, and billiards, and enjoy expertly crafted cocktails before dinner and tea time in the afternoon. Take a dive into the plunge pool, which looks as it did when the aforementioned F. Scott Fitzgerald spent his days lounging by its saline-based waters. It has even been rumored that his long days by the luxurious pool inspired him to write “The Great Gatsby.”

The New Cavalier

The painstaking effort to stay true to The Cavalier’s storied past does not mean that everything has remained unchanged, however. While the original building housed 195 guest rooms, each a tight 12 feet by 12 feet, the new Cavalier offers 62 guest rooms and 23 suites, all of which are beautifully designed and much larger than the original rooms. Today’s guests can choose from 11 different types of rooms, including the Legacy Suites, each of which were designed in correspondence with the board members who helped make the renovation possible, so no two Legacy Suites are the same.  No matter which room you stay in, however, the hotel’s rich history and the modern day are seamlessly blended with rich finishes and clean lines, as well as an uncanny attention to detail in amenities like clawfoot tubs and marble baths.

From your room, retreat to the SeaHill Spa, which offers lavish serenity with nine massage treatment rooms, a full service hair and nail salon, deep soaking tubs, and a pink Himalayan Salt-walled sauna. You can further unwind at Tarnished Truth Distilling Company , the country’s first craft distillery to be located inside of a hotel. This small batch distillery’s portfolio includes their signature bourbon, rye whiskey, and AVA Vodka, which you can enjoy in the Hunt Room , or even take a bottle home with you. They also offer private and hourly tours, flight tastings, and a private room for dinners, cocktail classes, and special occasions.

In addition to the Hunt Room and the Raleigh Room, guests can enjoy an evening dining at Becca , the hotel’s modern farm to fork restaurant offering decadent American fare crafted from the freshest local ingredients. In fact, many of Becca’s ingredients are grown in their on-site garden, which also features a grand stone fireplace and views of the Atlantic Ocean, making for a spectacular outdoor dining experience. While Becca is an entirely new addition, the name is a nod to the namesake for the hotel’s original signature restaurant, Pocahontas, who changed her name to Rebecca when she converted to Christianity.

They say that history has a funny way of repeating itself, and with a history like that of The Cavalier’s, it would certainly be a welcomed sight. No one can say exactly what excitement and grandeur the future will hold for what was once considered the finest resort hotel in America, but one thing is for certain; the full story of this Grand Dame has yet to be written. Her legend continues to grow every day, one new memory at a time.

YOU MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER TO ENTER

In 1927, The Virginia Beach night hid the reckless and the lawless under cloaks of shadow and silence. It was a time of midnight runs on no-name roads, cars modified to outrace the law, and drivers drunk on the promise of bootleg money. Deception rolled thick as the salt in the sea air. The moss, like whispers, hung from the Oaks and bald Cypress, as it did across much of the great American south. History will recall us.

Just returned from a fanstastic and rich experience in moscow, the Golden cities and St. Petersbrg. We felt taken care of as if we were royalty! our guides were extremely knowledgable and so we learned so much and gained such an appciation for the people, the struggles and the country. Witout the guide and driver, we would have just appreciated the architecture but learned nothing. You helped at every turn - this could not have been a better experience and we cannot thank you enough.

I just want to inform you that we have completed our trip to Russia. We really enjoyed the arrangement you have made for us, from the airport transfer, picking up our Bolshoi tickets, the hotel in Moscow, and of course the Golden Ring tour itself. Our tour guide, Irina, provided us with a lot of information on the buildings and history, which make our following visits to Moscow+St. Petersburg more rewarding. Thanks again for making our visit to Russia a wonderful one.

The Golden Ring of Russia

The Golden Ring is a group of medieval towns and cities that form a ring to the northeast of Moscow. These towns played a significant role in early Russian history and in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns are full of ancient Russian architecture from the Middle Ages including kremlins (walled fortresses), monasteries, cathedrals and churches. Visiting the Golden Ring will give you a chance to go back in time and imagine a Russia that used to be. The cities are associated with Russian Princes and knights, early Tsars such as Ivan the Terrible, the Mongol invasions and many other historical figures and events. Listening to the history and legends told by your experienced guide will evoke memories of storybooks and fairy tales. The towns of the Golden Ring are all in the Russian countryside which is beautiful – full of forests and fields and rivers and lakes. Apart from the Golden Ring, we also offer tours to the Silver Ring of Russia. These tours include such famous towns as Veliky Novgorod and Pskov. Your time in these ancient areas will be a great break from the bustle of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Walk along ancient Kremlin walls and see the onion domes rising from cathedrals where time has stopped, or follow paths along old riverbanks – travel back in time with our Golden Ring tours. An unforgettable adventure awaits.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

How far are the golden ring cities from moscow.

The Golden Ring cities are located within 2-4 hours drive of Moscow. The distance by road between Moscow and Suzdal is 219 km (3-4 hours drive), between Moscow and Sergiev Posad – 73 km, nearly a 2 hour drive. However, the distance between the cities of Golden Ring is rather short: e.g. between Vladimir and Suzdal it’s only 37 km.

Which cities of Golden Ring are worth visiting?

The following cities are the most well-known and attract the most attention: Suzdal, Vladimir and Sergiev Posad. If you have more than 1-2 days, we recommend Yaroslavl, Rostov Veliky and Kostroma.

Why do people call this group of cities the “Golden Ring”?

The cities of the Golden Ring, located northwest of Moscow, are spread out in a ring shape. The term was created in 1967 by historian and journalist Yuri Bychkov who wrote travel articles under the name “Golden Ring” because his route took the shape of a ring as he travelled through these cities.

How to get to the Golden Ring cities of Russia?

You can travel by train from Moscow to Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, Kostroma, Rostov Veliky and Yaroslavl. Alternatively, you can order a private tour and go by car with a private driver

What can I do while visiting the Golden Ring cities and towns?

Golden Ring cities and towns are very different from Moscow and St Petersburg. Instead of visiting art museums and ballet performances, you can enjoy exploring local Kremlins and fortresses, ancient churches and monasteries, listening to the church bells ringing, enjoying local foods and drinks, visiting banyas, spending time in pristine nature, and strolling along the Volga river.

Trump makes sweeping promises to donors on audacious fundraising tour

By tying donation requests to pledges of tax cuts and other policies, Trump is testing the boundaries of federal campaign finance laws.

cavalier hotel tours

When Donald Trump met some of the country’s top donors at a luxurious New York hotel earlier this month, he told the group that a businessman had recently offered $1 million to his presidential effort and wanted to have lunch.

“I’m not having lunch,” Trump said he responded, according to donors who attended. “You’ve got to make it $25 million.”

Another businessman, he said, had traditionally given $2 million to $3 million to Republicans. Instead, he said he told the donor that he wanted a $25 million or $50 million contribution or he would not be “very happy.”

As he closed his pitch at the Pierre Hotel, Trump explained to the group why it was in their interest to cut large checks. If he was not put back in office, taxes would go up for them under President Biden , who vows to let Trump-era tax cuts on the wealthy and corporations expire at the end of 2025.

“The tax cuts all expire for wealthy and poor and middle-income and everything else, but they expire in another seven months and he’s not going to renew them, which means taxes are going to go up by four times,” Trump said, exaggerating the size of the cuts. “You’re going to have the biggest tax increase in history.”

Seconds after promising the tax cuts, Trump made his pitch explicit. “So whatever you guys can do, I appreciate it,” he said.

The remarks are just one example of a series of audacious requests by Trump for big-money contributions in recent months, according to 11 donors, advisers and others close to the former president, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe his fundraising. The pleas for millions in donations come as the presumptive Republican nominee seeks to close a cash gap with Biden and to pay for costly legal bills in his four criminal indictments.

Trump sometimes makes requests higher than his team expects to receive, sometimes surprising his own advisers because he is asking for so much money. By frequently tying the fundraising requests within seconds of promises of tax cuts, oil project infrastructure approvals and other favorable policies and asking for sums more than his campaign and the GOP can legally accept from an individual, Trump is also testing the boundaries of federal campaign finance laws, according to legal experts.

In one recent meeting staged by his super PAC, Trump asked oil industry executives to raise $1 billion for his campaign and said raising such a sum would be a “deal” given how much money they would save if he were reelected as president.

In recent meetings with donors, he has repeatedly suggested they should give millions of dollars without saying where it should go.

Larry Noble, a longtime campaign finance lawyer, said Trump was technically allowed to ask only for contributions of $3,300 or less for his campaign, according to federal laws. But he can appear at events for his super PAC where the price of admission is far higher — as long as he doesn’t ask for the money directly.

“He can’t say, ‘I want you to give me $1 million,’” Noble said.

And after a 2016 Supreme Court decision overturning a public-corruption conviction of former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell, it would require an explicit quid pro quo for a specific government action in direct exchange for a contribution to be viewed as illegal, Noble said.

Also, even if presented with evidence Trump might have gone over the line, multiple prominent campaign finance lawyers said, the Federal Election Commission, which is gridlocked with three Republicans and three Democrats, is unlikely to investigate any of Trump’s fundraising in an election year.

Trump is certainly not the first candidate to seek large checks from moneyed interests. Advisers say that Trump regularly makes the same policy promises on the campaign trail that he does behind closed doors with wealthy donors, and evidence has not emerged that Trump has directly linked a specific policy outcome to a specific donation.

Oftentimes, his comments at the events are about foreign policy and topics he discusses at rallies, such as inflation and immigration.

For example, at one event, he suggested that he would have bombed Moscow and Beijing if Russia invaded Ukraine or China invaded Taiwan, surprising some of the donors.

The Trump campaign did not respond to detailed questions about his fundraising requests but issued a statement in support of his efforts.

“As Joe Biden’s backers in Hollywood and Silicon Valley are withholding their support for Biden’s failing campaign, donors across the country are maximizing their efforts to reelect President Trump because they realize we cannot afford another four years of Joe Biden’s terrible policies,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

The former president was once reluctant to call donors and decried the role of big money in politics. He also often railed about having to take pictures — berating advisers for scheduling too many “clicks” — and sought to cast himself as an outsider who was not beholden to the traditional moneyed interests that shape Washington.

“He didn’t want to make fundraising calls,” said Sam Nunberg, a former aide on Trump’s 2016 campaign. On the 2020 campaign, he would reluctantly participate in fundraisers, advisers said, seeing them as an unpleasant necessity.

Part of his opposition to making calls was that he liked the perception that he was an outsider who was going to “drain the swamp.”

“I will say this — [the] people [who] control special interests, lobbyists, donors, they make large contributions to politicians and they have total control over those politicians,” Trump said during a 2016 debate. “And frankly, I know the system better than anybody else, and I’m the only one up here that’s going to be able to fix that system, because that system is wrong.”

This time, campaign advisers say, Trump needs the money and he is taking an active role in raising it. The Trump campaign and RNC reported that they jointly raised $76 million in April , about $25 million more than the Biden campaign said it raised across all its committees in the same month. But the Biden operation still had about $60 million more cash on hand than the Trump campaign.

Trump has met with an assortment of real estate, legal, finance, oil and other business executives in recent months, according to people familiar with invitation lists. He has often promised agenda items they would like passed as part of his broader fundraising pitch, and sometimes has asked allies to bundle millions or more, according to people close to the former president. Some of the meetings have included tours of his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla., and his New York apartment.

Trump, four people close to him say, is closely tracking who gives what amount to his campaign and associated efforts — and which allies are bundling large checks for him. He has often told allies how much money he expects them to raise.

In the days following the recent meeting with oil industry donors, executives discussed whether it would even be possible to meet Trump’s $1 billion request, according to four people in the oil industry familiar with the discussions.

But they are trying. Trump has repeatedly pressured oil magnate Harold Hamm to raise significant money for him, telling Hamm that he is “behind” and “needs the money,” according to a person familiar with the outreach. Hamm had an event for Trump in Texas on Wednesday, where the price of admission was about $250,000 for oil executives, according to people familiar with the matter.

The meeting stretched for many hours, attendees said, and included photos with the top donors. At the fundraiser, he promised to cut taxes on corporations and give oil executives an array of policies they wanted and said he was being outraised by the Democrats and the unions, asking the crowd to “be generous, please.”

“So give me some of your money,” he said, drawing laughs. “True. I’m begging for your money.”

At another event, Trump told the group that if they wanted a picture with him and did not have one, then they needed to give more.

He also held a fundraiser at the home of Kentucky coal baron Joe Craft earlier in May, according to a person with knowledge of the event.

Trump has regularly joked with donors and advisers that he doesn’t spend more than 10 minutes with someone if the person doesn’t give $10 million, according to people who have heard the comments. He also has complained about some of his billionaire friends not giving enough.

In Florida earlier this month, the crowd seemed stunned after Trump offered the stage to anyone who would cut a $1 million check, according to people present. He kept asking people to come forward, according to audio of the event. Then two people took him up on the offer. The limit to contributing to the RNC and the campaign — the entities hosting the event — was less than $1 million.

At a meeting with financial titans in Palm Beach earlier this year, he asked the group what regulations they viewed as the most onerous, according to a person who attended. He then remarked at a larger fundraiser that donors were telling him they cared more about regulations than taxes, according to a donor who attended.

At the New York fundraiser, Trump told the crowd that he wanted to hear what was on their minds and heard their thoughts about former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley — whose prospects as a potential vice-presidential pick he dismissed — and a range of issues related to Israel.

To end the roundtable, he told the room that it was time to go to another fundraiser, prompting laughter when he joked that the next crowd would be less wealthy than the current one.
