The First-Timer’s Guide To Tahiti Vacations

French Polynesia is heaven everywhere you look. A  Tahiti cruise  is the best way to experience longstanding cultural traditions and take in the amazing scenery: thatched-roof bungalows over blue lagoons to white-sand islets scattered across the ocean, ringed by coral reefs.

Tahiti vacations take a lot of planning, whether visiting by land or cruise. Make the most of your  cruise to Hawaii , Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands with our helpful guide.

Getting Oriented In French Polynesia

Tahiti is one of many islands in French Polynesia, a territory of France that encompasses 118 islands and atolls in the South Pacific. They are categorized in five groups: the Marquesas, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Society Islands, Austral Islands and Gambier Islands.

Most first-timers to Tahiti explore the best-known Society Islands: Tahiti,  Moorea  and  Bora Bora . Our cruise itineraries include these romantic isles along with more remote ports. Go ashore to serene  Raiatea , the most sacred island and homeland of the ancient Polynesians. It is the only place where Tiare Apetahi, a rare white flower grows. Another stop on our cruises is Fakarava, Tuamotu, an atoll and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with seashell-pink beaches and world-renowned snorkeling.

What Languages Are Spoken In French Polynesia

French and Tahitian are the official languages of the islands. English is spoken at hotels, restaurants and other high-tourist areas. Learning a few phrases in the official languages is encouraged as it will help you connect to the wonderful people who call the islands home.

Best Time To Visit Tahiti And Bora Bora

French Polynesia gets amazing weather all year—some islands enjoy a whopping 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. Breezy trade winds and mild temps make Tahiti and French Polynesia an idyllic vacation destination. It can rain every day but rarely rains non-stop for days at a time.

Rainy, Dry And Shoulder Season

The rainy season in the South Pacific is from December to March. It is the best time to cruise Tahiti and Bora Bora if you want a good deal and to avoid thick crowds of sightseers. But it is the worst time for weather, as there’s an increased risk of rainy days.

The best time, weather wise is May to October, which is dry season. It is almost always clear skies and gentle breezes. The downside to the best weather is that the crowds thicken, and the prices rise. July and August are the most popular months to visit Tahiti and Bora Bora.

In April and November, the months between wet and dry season, the weather is drier, but there are still showers. Prices are lower, and it is not as crowded. Tahiti vacations during the shoulder season are the best.

What To Wear In Tahiti

Pack the proper attire to feel cool and comfortable on your Tahiti vacation. The islands are casual and laid-back. For women, cotton sarongs (called pareo), sundresses, shorts and sandals are the daily wear. Men don linen shorts and short-sleeved shirts. Aim for resort-casual, even in fine dining restaurants. Save the cocktail wear for ship Dressy Nights.

The tropical sun in Tahiti and Bora Bora is fierce. Wear sunscreen daily and slather it on periodically, even when there are clouds. Pack a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunglasses.

You’ll live in your swimwear in Tahiti, so bring more than one suit and coverups. Spray on bug repellent, especially when hiking to waterfalls.

We can’t wait to  show you Tahiti .

Bora Bora Cruises

cruise to hawaii tahiti bora bora

Bora Bora cruises are a fantastic way to visit Bora Bora. My first visit visit to Bora Bora was by cruise ship!  Since then, I have taken a number of cruises around Tahiti, as it is a very special way to see these islands.

Each morning you wake up with a new islands to explore, and each evening you sail away with the sunset. Sailing into these pristine island lagoons on a Tahiti cruise gives you a feeling as to what it would have been like as an explorer discovering these exotic lands for the first time.

Where do Bora Bora cruises go?

Cruises that visit Bora Bora usually make stops at a few islands around Tahiti, and stop at each for a day. So they are not exclusively Bora Bora cruises – you will also visit some other beautiful islands.

Other islands frequently visited on a Bora Bora cruise are Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, and Rangiroa.

Tahiti cruise ship

All-inclusive Bora Bora Vacation

Cruises are a great way to have a affordable Bora Bora vacation , as they include your food and transport between islands, and also offer you the chance to see a number of beautiful islands along the way. Flying between islands is certainly not as smooth as cruising between them, you only have to unpack once!

How long are Bora Bora cruises?

Cruises that stop in Bora Bora are typically 7, 10 or 14 days in length, with the exception of the longer Pacific cruises that venture to other island groups, such as Hawaii or New Zealand. Cruise ships stop in Bora Bora for 1 or 2 days. To make the most of your time here, see what our favorite things to do in Bora Bora are, and what we recommend to do from your Bora Bora cruise ship.

When to go on a Bora Bora cruise?

You may not have a huge amount of choice as to when you take your Bora Bora cruise. If you want a particular itinerary you will have to go with the time of year it is on offer , and when it is available. The most popular cruises can sell out a year ahead of time, especially when there are special offers! Plan and book your cruise at least a year ahead of time, especially if you have your heart set on a particular cruise, and cabin style.

If you are flexible, watch for last minute special offers when a cruise has unsold cabins left. Be aware that although you might get the cabin at a special price, buying a last minute Tahiti airfare may cost you a lot more. Your good deal may not be all that cheap to take! Sometimes the stars do align and Air Tahiti Nui has a special on, so it's worth a look.

So that you know what to pack, see what the Bora Bora weather will be like when you are planning to go on your cruise.

Choose the right Bora Bora cruise for you

The cruise companies offering the best Bora Bora cruises are the Paul Gauguin , Aranui V and Princess Cruises. They offer dedicated Tahiti cruises that visit Bora Bora and other exotic Tahitian Islands.

All of these Bora Bora cruises are on small cruise ships, so there is a delightful romance to their cruising style. Life-time friendships are created in the dining room on more intimate cruises. You'll get to know your captain and receive VIP favors from the friendly staff.

Other cruise companies, sail through Tahitian waters, stopping at Bora Bora while on longer, transpacific cruises.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin offers the most authentic, Polynesian cruise , sailing around Tahiti's beautiful islands. Gauguin cruises also provide the most varied itinerary options, with a choice of different cruise lengths, and island groups to visit. This company takes pride in giving guests Polynesian warm, vahine hospitality. The refurbished Gauguin, transports you on a luxurious, all inclusive Bora Bora vacation .

cruise to hawaii tahiti bora bora

The Aranui “freighter to Paradise”, serves as both a passenger and cargo ship traveling between Tahiti, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, and far out to the pristine Marquesas Islands. After the launch of the new Aranui V in November 2015, a stop at Bora Bora is included in it's route. This ship offers a close connection to the real Polynesia, taking you to remote, pristine islands that few get the privilege to see. It's a true, adventure cruise!

cruise to hawaii tahiti bora bora

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises offers a traditional style cruise through some of Tahiti's best known islands. A Tahiti Princess cruise itinerary gives a superb “first taste” of French Polynesia. You can expect immaculate cabins, quality dining, and impeccable service with a smile. This option gives the best value for dollars spent of any Tahiti and Bora Bora vacation we have planned! We have taken this cruise a ridiculous number of times and have always had a lovely experience with Princess hospitality. The original Princess “Love Boat” of the 70s was sailing these waters until a few years ago, when the ship was nostalgically retired.

cruise to hawaii tahiti bora bora

Transpacific Cruises

Transpacific cruises can be taken with Celebrity X, Carnival, Norwegian, Holland America, and L'Austral. These cruise ships pass through the Tahitian islands a limited number of times each year (sometimes only once). They give a glimpse at French Polynesia, usually offering two stops, the main island of Tahiti and Bora Bora. Often sailing between the USA and Australia, their cruise lengths and itineraries vary, and include Pacific Islands such as Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, and New Zealand. Cruising is such a relaxing and interesting way to get from A to B.

What does a Bora Bora cruise cost?

The most affordable way to cruise Tahiti and see Bora Bora is on one of the Princess 10 night cruises . This isn't just the most affordable of all the Tahiti cruises, it's the most affordable Tahiti vacation option! It includes food, travel and accommodation (but not drinks). It takes you to more Tahitian islands than you would see if you flew to Tahiti, even sailing out to Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Atolls! The cost of this cruise can vary. We have booked it on special last minute deals for $1600 per person, twin share in an ocean view cabin, and for $1800 per person for a stateroom with a balcony. The usual cost is around $2000$2500 per person, twin share, depending on your cabin type. Even at the regular price, these Tahiti cruises are a great value 10 day Tahiti vacation. The only extras you pay for are drinks, excursions of your choice, and souvenirs.

Check out the Paul Gauguin sailing times if you want a more luxurious cruise, with the relaxation of an all inclusive Tahiti vacation. You can cruise Tahiti without ever producing your credit card as all drinks and excursions are included! A Paul Gauguin cruise for 10 nights costs $5000 per person, twin share. Look out for specials that include your airfare from Los Angeles, hotel room in Tahiti, or 50% off specials. Sometimes they even offer both!

Sailing on the Aranui as a visitor is a specialist adventure cruise , and offers accommodation from dormitory style bunk berths to presidential suites. Aranui caters for completely different traveler styles and budgets.

What we Recommend for Your Cruise

For an indepth experience of romantic Tahiti and Her Islands, we recommend looking at the Paul Gauguin, Aranuii or Princess Bora Bora cruises. These spectacular sailings will immerse you in ambient sights, sounds, tastes, and fragrances of the real Tahiti spirit. Choose one of these Bora Bora cruises that fits your budget.

Bora Bora   Travel Guide

Why Go To Bora Bora

The small island of Bora Bora (just about 6 miles long and a little more than 2 miles wide) overflows with beauty. A dormant volcano rises up at its center and fans out into lush jungle before spilling into an aquamarine lagoon. In fact, author James Michener, who wrote "Tales of the South Pacific," called Bora Bora "the most beautiful island in the world." The 18th-century British explorer James Cook even coined it as the "Pearl of the Pacific." The very definition of a tropical getaway, blissful Bora Bora abounds with luxurious resorts , sunny skies, warm waters and friendly locals.

And as you might've already guessed, the main industry on this petite island in French Polynesia and its swarm of tiny  motu  (islands) is tourism. To that end, you can snorkel, explore  Vaitape  (Bora Bora's main port), hike  Mount Otemanu  and more. But there's a catch: Bora Bora is expensive – very expensive. In short, visit Bora Bora for natural beauty, visit for utter relaxation and visit if you have the money.

Bora Bora Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best times to go to Bora Bora are November and April. These short shoulder seasons offer fine weather with temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s. High season runs from May to October when rain showers are isolated and the number of tourists swells. Low season stretches from December to March when the weather is wet and visitors become mosquito bait. But really anytime is a good time to visit Bora Bora, since the weather is warm year-round.

Weather in Bora Bora

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

It's all about the lagoon  Here's a secret: Many of Bora Bora's beaches are manmade and not much to write home about. The turquoise waters of the lagoon are another story.

Taste test great local food Trying  poisson cru  (raw fish) – usually tuna or mahi-mahi marinated in lime juice and coconut milk – is a must.

Try the miracle oil  Pick up a bottle of all-purpose  monoi , an oil made from coconut and tiare blossoms. It serves as a leave-in hair conditioner, a moisturizer and even a salve for insect bites.

How to Save Money in Bora Bora

Visit in the offseason  The room rate for an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora can hover close to $1,000 a night, but you can find lower rates if you visit between December and March with the exception of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Take a Pacific Ocean cruise  Many cruise lines stop at Bora Bora, so you can get a taste of the luxe life without cashing in your retirement.

Bring your own alcohol  And pack lots of sunscreen. Many shops on the island sell alcohol and basic necessities – such as sunscreen and bug spray – at high prices, so make sure to pack in surplus.

Culture & Customs

The main languages in Bora Bora are French and Tahitian, but you'll find that many people also speak English, especially resort employees. French Polynesians move at a relaxed pace. They have a life philosophy called "` Aita pea pea, " which means "not to worry." Try to go with the flow and enjoy life at a slower clip.

Protestant missionaries, who came to the island in the 19th century, have heavily influenced the religion in Bora Bora: Christianity continues to play a major role in the island's culture. If you're interested, you might stop into the  Église Protestante Maohi (Maohi Protestant Church) in Vaitape, which has roots dating back to the late 1700s.

Since 1946, French Polynesia (a group of islands of which Bora Bora belongs to) has been an overseas territory of the French Republic. But French Polynesia has a lot of autonomy, which you'll see in everything from their currency to taxation. The official currency of Bora Bora is the French Pacific franc (CFP). One U.S. dollar is equivalent to approximately 103 CFP.

What to Eat

Seafood features heavily on the menus of Bora Bora restaurants, and travelers would be remiss if they didn't try some of the local specialities, namely poisson cru , or raw tuna that has been marinated in lime juice and coconut milk. Mahi-mahi, grouper and bonito are other staples that are often found on Bora Bora menus. Visitors should also sample the locally grown pineapple, coconut and bananas.

Keep in mind that many visitors to Bora Bora choose to purchase a meal plan through their resort, especially if their resort is located on a smaller motu (island), which necessitates boat travel to and from the main island where most of the popular restaurants are located. As you might imagine, Bora Bora's restaurants are often expensive – after all, importing ingredients is expensive. The destination's most popular, traveler-approved fine dining establishments include Lagoon Restaurant by Jean-Georges at the St. Regis Bora Bora , where the ambiance and views rival the French-and-Asian menu, and St. James Bora Bora , where travelers say the service is unparalleled. For a cheaper dining experience, visitors might want to stop by a beachside roulotte (think: food truck) for some inexpensive local fare. Travelers suggest jumping in the queue for the roulottes with the longest lines, as there is likely a delicious reason for their popularity. Other travelers suggest shopping in local supermarkets in Vaitape for snacks and drinks (they'll cost significantly less than what's offered at your hotel).

Getting Around Bora Bora

The best way to get around Bora Bora is by bike, especially when you consider that the entire island only takes a few hours to traverse. Rental cars are another option, but they cost significantly more than a rental bicycle. The local bus system, Le Truck, is notoriously unpredictable and taxis are quite expensive.

To get to Bora Bora, most travelers fly into Bora Bora Airport also known as Motu Mute Airport. If you're coming from the U.S., you'll first stop at the Faa'a International Airport in Tahiti . Once you've cleared customs, you'll hop on a 45-minute flight to Bora Bora Airport. You'll find this airport on a small islet called Motu Mute, just northwest of the main island, and you'll have to take a quick catamaran ride to reach your final destination at Bora Bora's Vaitape quay. Many resorts offer airport transportation; check to see if yours does before making arrangements.

Entry & Exit Requirements

To visit French Polynesia, you'll need a U.S. passport valid for six months beyond the duration of your trip. If you're planning to stay in the country for more than 90 days, you'll also need to acquire a visa. For more information, visit the U.S. State Department's website .

Travel | travel: here’s why the best way to see french polynesia is on a cruise ship.

cruise to hawaii tahiti bora bora

Experience should tell well-traveled warm-weather wanderlusters that when offered this greeting at a tropical resort, it’s best to take it with a grain of sea salt. Too many times has this heat-seeking holiday maker been burned, not by the sun’s rays, but that seemingly hospitable phrase.

At the five-star GoldenEye resort in Jamaica, for one, “paradise” had me waking up in a bedsheet speckled with blood despite having the protection, or not, of a mosquito net and generous layer of insect repellant. Las Brisas Acapulco is a luxury property affectionally called “The Pink and White Paradise,” but the only color I saw was red due to loud service carts whizzing past our room at all hours of the night. A drive-by shooting across the street was the cherry on top during a visit that was far from utopian.

If I had a nickel — or other small-value coin of foreign currency — for every time a tropical destination failed to live up to the paradisical hype, that would be a tidy sum and fodder for a tell-all travel book. But since life is short and we need more positivity in this topsy-turvy world, let’s not dwell on places where slices of heaven are inadvertently mixed with bits of hell. We should instead focus our travel binoculars on a corner of the world that rarely disappoints.

We’re talking about French Polynesia in the center of the serene South Pacific. Made up of five archipelagoes and 118 islands, nearly half of them uninhabited, this pinch-me place is a popular setting for screensaver graphics and wall calendars. It literally is the model of what many of us picture as the quintessential tropical paradise.

Who doesn’t dream of cooling off with a fruity libation while lounging beside palm trees swaying in the breeze on a pristine white-sand beach? Here’s where that vision becomes reality, and the icing on the coconut cake are views of crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by lush, green mountains. Even sweeter, unlike many vacation destinations near the equator, French Polynesia gets the seal of approval — a Level 1 travel advisory — from the U.S. State Department for safety.

cruise to hawaii tahiti bora bora

Air Tahiti Nui, American, Delta, French Bee, Hawaiian and United airlines all fly between Tahiti and Los Angeles or San Francisco, and it’s a minimum of eight hours in the air. Although not a short trip, or a cheap one with roundtrips costing north of a grand, the ROI is a French-accented dream vacation with a joie de vivre.

Blessed with unmatched beauty, unique culture, friendly people and an alluring sense of seclusion, French Polynesia is a favored nation for honeymooners, celebrants of milestone anniversaries and others with the urge to splurge somewhere sultry besides the likes of South Florida, Hawaii, Costa Rica and the Caribbean.

The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is famous for its overwater villas and majestic views. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Staying at a resort is how 80% of visitors do French Polynesia, per the country’s tourism authority ( tahititourisme.com ), and many go big with lodging at one of those luxurious overwater bungalows synonymous with the destination. The pinnacle of posh is arguably The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort ( www.stregisborabora.com ), where from inside your high-class hut you can watch sea life though glass-bottom flooring, and outside jump into an aquamarine lagoon off your private platform with a perfect view of iconic Mount Otemanu.

Making a full-service, five-star resort your base for an entire vacation sounds like paradise, and the majority of visitors would seem to agree. But know that if you ever want to explore other islands to get a different taste of Tahitian-French culture, that, mon amie, can be a hassle. Because flights and ferry service are limited to certain islands and days of the week, even the most resourceful hotel concierge may try to talk guests out of this well-intentioned, yet impractical idea.

The luxury, 332-passenger Paul Gauguin is specially built for Polynesian waters. (Photo by David Dickstein)

If catching “island fever” after spending a few days on one property is a possibility, then your best ticket to paradise could be a cruise. By ship is the easiest way to visit multiple islands in a sprawling destination that’s roughly the size of Europe. On a typical 7- to 10-day journey around the Society Islands, for example, ships make calls in Moorea, Taha’a, Raiatea, Huahine and, of course, Bora Bora, before returning to Tahiti. Paul Gauguin, Windstar and Silversea are offering the most roundtrips with this itinerary over the next year, give or take a port, and of special note are those that anchor overnight in Bora Bora.

One of the benefits of cruising is you go to many places and unpack only once. But when given the opportunity to abandon ship to spend a night in an overwater villa, fussing with luggage a second time is a pleasant inconvenience. On a recent weeklong “More Society Islands & Tahiti” voyage aboard the 332-passenger Paul Gauguin, at least two guests skipped out on their spacious veranda stateroom with butler in exchange for an “Overwater Deluxe Villa” at the St. Regis, the only Forbes five-star resort in Bora Bora. That coveted category starts at $1,530 a night. By comparison, the InterContinental Tahiti and Hilton Tahiti were reporting midweek availability in July with rates starting at $330 and $370, respectively, but with markedly less wow factor.

Selling points of the St. Regis include snorkeling safely in the stunning Lagoonarium stocked with more than 120 species of fish, adults-only nooks and crannies, a heavenly spa, themed dining events nearly every night at one of the six restaurants and bars (the luau-like Polynesian Evening on Wednesdays is a high-energy hoot), and among the recreational offerings is an assigned bicycle for every guest.

The farewell party on Paul Gauguin is bittersweet for guests and crew. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The good life continues back on the Paul Gauguin ( www.pgcruises.com ). With an excellent 1:1.5 crew-to-guest ratio, service on the Paul Gauguin is solid — quite possibly the most caring and friendly this sea-legged scribe has experienced. Several among the crew flaunted other talents at a delightfully entertaining crew show on the penultimate evening.

A Polynesian revue dazzles guests aboard the Paul Gauguin. (Photo by David Dickstein)

On other nights in the understatedly beautiful 314-seat Grand Salon, Polynesian culture is shared through song and dance by impressive local acts. Late-night entertainment is often a weak link on small ships, but not here; the Santa Rosa Band and pianist-singer Jerry Lomocso are two versatile acts out of the Philippines worthy of the extended contracts they just received.

Paul Gauguin passengers enjoy a day on a private motu. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Shipboard entertainment, a stern-side marina for watersports, and most organized activities are included in the cruise fare, which for a 7-day sail can be booked for as low as $5,000, double occupancy. What’s not included are treatments at the well-managed Algotherm Spa and shore excursions. That’s typical even for luxury-category cruising. Looking at a few tours, ATVing in Huahine costs $279 per machine (single or double), but the views along the route, road and off-road, are priceless; “Coral Garden Drift Snorkeling” ($120 in Raiatea, $125 in Taha’a) takes swimmers to one of the best spots in the world; and the “WaveRunner Adventure” in Moorea ($239 per machine, single or double) includes a pitstop at a motu for a thrilling ray encounter.

A cappuccino mousse dessert caps a lovely dinner at L'Etoile. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Adventures of the epicurean kind were mostly successful on the recent cruise; dishes starring steaks, shellfish, lamb and veggies were of the high caliber one would expect from French-based Ponant, which acquired the ship in 2019, and is known for outstanding cuisine. A tip of the chapeau to Cheese Night at L’Etoile restaurant, featuring a dazzling spread of 15 types of prized French fromage.

Like the food, pretty much everything about the Paul Gauguin goes down smoothly. Even the ship’s bones are specially designed for smooth navigation in Polynesian waters, and at the risk of causing a nerd alert, here’s why: A 17-foot draft allows the ship to get in close to shallow lagoons and isolated islands, maximizing stopover time.

As for parts of the ship we can actually see, recent refurbishments have the 27-year-old ship looking younger and more distinguished than when I sailed on it in 2018. If only the spa’s $210 “Deep Regenerating Sun Care” treatment could have done that for me.

Hawaii is one of the top tropical island destinations for Americans. Hawaii has no shortage of reasons why everyone should be visiting , but there are also reasons not to visit, including expenses and over-tourism.

Fortunately, there are alternatives to Hawaii for beachgoers who want something tropical yet less crowded. Here are three scenic (and often underrated) tropical island alternatives to Hawaii.

American Samoa: America's Last Undiscovered Territory

American samoa is a territory of the usa and yet it has almost no visitors.

Hawaii is a fully-fledged state of the United States and the only state not connected to the North American mainland. But there are plenty of other island dependencies to explore.

The United States has several territories, most famously Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. While Hawaii is famous with American holidaymakers, American Samoa almost completely falls off the radar.

American Samoa is made up of tropical and forested islands — everything everyone could dream of for a tropical island getaway.

  • Population: 45,000
  • Capital: Pago Pago
  • Status: Unincorporated territory of the United States

American Samoa is the only part of the United States found south of the equator and is neighbor to the much larger independent country of Samoa (Samoa was partitioned by the colonial powers in the late 19th century).

American Samoa hosts the remotest American national park .

Only a few tens of thousands of people bother to visit American Samoa in any given year. It is very far from the Continental United States and difficult to reach. But those who do go there find a virgin land almost devoid of tourists.

There are no large franchised resorts and only a nascent tourism industry. Many visitors choose to stay with homestays and delve into the local culture of the far-flung isles.

  • Getting There: Direct Flights from Honolulu

While American Samoa is a territory of the United States, everyone (including Americans) must travel there with a valid passport and an onward ticket. The islands are visa-free, but passports are required.

10 Great Things To Do In American Samoa, The Forgotten US Territory

Three international airlines are servicing the islands ( Hawaiian Airlines , Samoa Airways, and Talofa Airways) and they link the islands to Hawaii, Samoa, and Tonga (flights are bi-weekly to Hawaii).

Tahiti: The Most Romantic Island Destination Of The Pacific

Tahiti and bora bora just may be the most romantic pacific alternative to hawaii.

French Polynesia (and especially its popular islands of Tahiti and Bora Bora) are world famous for being a luxurious and romantic destination. It is particularly popular for honeymooners. However, travelers looking for a cheaper tropical island destination should probably keep on looking; Bora Bora, specifically, is famous for its luxurious and expensive hotels .

French Polynesia has plenty of underrated and overlooked islands to explore.

French Polynesia is made up of some 121 islands and atolls spread over a vast region in the South Pacific. The population of the French territory (technically an overseas country of France) is around 280,000, most of whom live on the main island of Tahiti.

  • Population: 280,000 (total)
  • Largest City: Papeete
  • Status: Department of France

Tahiti has volcanic mountains, tropical forests, coral reefs, pristine beaches, and around two-thirds of the population. It hosts the Fa'aa International Airport, the gateway to French Polynesia.

And, some would say that French Polynesia is more romantic than Hawaii.

10 Best Things To Do In Bora Bora To Immerse Yourself In Paradise

  • Getting There: Direct Flights from Honolulu, San Francisco, and Los Angeles

Besides Tahiti, one of French Polynesia's most famous island destinations is Bora Bora. It is located around 125 nautical miles from Tahiti and is an extinct volcanic island surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. The peak rises to 2,385 feet above the sea and the island is internationally acclaimed for its seaside luxury resorts .

Azores: The Perfect Atlantic Ocean Alternative To Hawaii

Take a direct flight from nyc to the azores, one of the most dramatic alternatives to hawaii in the atlantic.

The Azores are an overlooked sub-tropical volcanic island archipelago in the North Atlantic on the way to Europe. The Azores constitute an autonomous region of Portugal and comprise nine dramatic volcanic islands.

They are located around 930 miles from Portugal and 1,200 miles from Canada and are regarded by the Portuguese as one of their best-kept secrets (they even boast the highest point in Portugal; Mount Pico at 7,713 feet).

  • Population: 236,000
  • Largest City: Ponta Delgada
  • Status: Autonomous region of Portugal

The Azores are timeless and laid back. Here, it is less about the beaches and more about the unique local Portuguese culture, hiking the islands, whale watching (some of the best in the world), and the local cuisine. As an added benefit, the Azores are likely to be cheaper than Hawaii.

  • Getting There: Direct Flights From Newark & JFK

The international airport servicing the islands is Ponta Delgada - Joao Paulo II Airport and while most of the flights are to Europe, there are direct flights to New York. The Azores are one of the best island alternatives to Hawaii for those living on the East Coast of the USA.
