Upon arrival at Cairo airport meet Deluxe Tours Egypt representative who will be waiting with a sign with your name. After finishing visa formalities and luggage claim transfer to your hotel for overnight.

(Optional tour) Dinner Nile Cruise with belly dancer and Tanura show.

Day 2 Pyramids of Giza Memphis Sakkara

8:30 am After breakfast meet your guide to start your visit to the pyramids of Giza those architectural wonders that hardly seem real.  From Giza, you head to Saqqara to see the first-ever Egyptian pyramid. It’s a remarkable sight, crumbling slowly yet still as classically shaped as it was more than 3,500 years ago. Then you will see Memphis the ancient capital of Egypt. It’s a full-day tour today, but it moves at a relaxed pace, and the emphasis is on really exploring, rather than simply ticking off the famous sights.

Day 3 Day trip to Alexandria

After breakfast at 7:30 am start your tour to Alexandria with a 3 hours drive from Cairo to see the pearl of the Mediterranean sea.

Day 4 Coptic Cairo - Citadel and Khan El Khalili

ِAfter breakfast meet your tour guide to start exploring another place in Cairo which is Coptic Cairo or Old Cairo. In one place are traces of the three monotheistic religions, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, and when visiting the Interfaith Complex or Coptic Cairo, the visitor feels a rare pleasure for the high spirituality surrounding the place. Our tour starts from Amr Ibn Al-Aas Mosque in the city of Fustat, which was founded by Muslims in Egypt after its conquest. Through the Babylon Fortress, which was built during the reign of a Roman Emperor, and a group of churches, the most important of which is the Hanging Church and the Church of Abu Sergius and Mary Gerges Church. Finally, the Jewish temple of Ibn Ezra and learning about its stories and history

Day 5 Cairo - Amman Airport - Madaba - Mt Nebo - Dead Sea Hotel

Our representative welcomes you with signage at Amman Airport after passing the customs. From here drive directly to Madaba, where to find the famous mosaic 6th-century map of Palestine in St. George’s church. Short ride to Mt. Nebo, the place where Prophet Moses gazed at the Promised Land before he died. After we proceed to the Dead Sea, with 400 meters below sea level, the lake is the lowest point on earth, where ever since the days of Herod the Great, people have flocked to in search of its curative secrets. Free time to float and enjoy the salty waters, check-in and overnight.

Day 6 Dead Sea - Petra

After breakfast, we drive 3 hours to the red rose city Petra, the biggest attraction of Jordan. Petra was first established around the 6th century B.C. by the Nabataean Arabs, a nomadic tribe who settled in the area and laid the foundation of a commercial empire that extended into Syria. With the guide pass the canyon, the so called Siq, to see the most beautiful monument: the Treasury. Continue via the Street of Facades to the Royal Tombs and Pharaoh’s Castle. The guide says farewell to you at the restaurant area; free time to explore Petra on your own, before walking the same way back to the entrance. Overnight Petra.

Day 7 Petra - Amman airport

Breakfast at hotel, latest check out from room is 12:00 noon. According to departure time we drive 3 hours to Amman Airport to board your flight.

Are you planning to visit Petra, the landmark of Jordan, and for many, the only reason to go to the country? There are a couple of things to know more about before planning your Petra itinerary, such as whether to spend one day or two days in Petra, what is the best itinerary, and what you should know about the history of Petra. This travel guide to Petra contains all that is based on my personal experiences as a solo female traveler.

Do you want to visit other places in Jordan? Check out this article about 5, 7 and 10 days Jordan itenaries.

What is the best time to visit Petra?

The recommended time to visit Jordan is in spring and autumn when the temperature is moderate. This also applies to Petra, although it lies at an altitude of approximately 900 meters. Summer can be unbearably hot for walking all day as the temperature can rise to over 40 degrees. It can be pretty cold in winter, and although it rarely happens, it can snow and rain during winter. If that happens, they even close Petra for visitors as the slippery rocks get dangerous.

At the same time, there are so many tourists in Jordan during the peak season (autumn and spring), especially in Petra. It is always beautiful, right, but it is not the same when you can enjoy that in tranquility.

For all that, the best time to visit Jordan is outside the peak season but not in the middle of winter.  October,   November, February, and March  could be the perfect choice when an even slightly cooler temperature makes it ideal for long distances in Petra, or it may not be cold at all during the day. Expect the temperature to drop in the mornings and the evenings.

Important : If you plan to combine your visit to Petra with hiking in Wadis, this is not the best time to go to Petra since wadis are closed from November till March.

How to plan your trip to Jordan?

Flights : find the best flight deals on Skyscanner

Rent a car : Check Discover Cars ‘ deals for driving around in Jordan (the best way to discover the country)

Insurance : Safetywing is a cheap insurance that covers all medical issues, including COVID-related ones. This is what I use every time.

Hotel/Hostel: Booking.com

Local tours and guides in Jordan: Toursbylocals , GetYourGuide and Viator offer several customized tours to Petra

Petra opening hours

Summertime (May-October): 6 am to 6 pm

Wintertime (November – April): 6 am to 4 pm

You must leave Petra by sunset for security reasons and also because of the “Petra by night program”, for which they charge an extra fee (17JOD~24$). The security staff goes around the area with torches to check if any tourists are inside.

How much does it cost to visit Petra?

Visiting Petra is quite expensive. Jordanians are aware that this is Jordan’s highlight, and tourists are willing to pay whatever they need to see that. Or maybe this is what it costs to maintain Petra. However, everything that serves tourists in Jordan is much more expensive than when you leave the touristic trail making Jordan a more expensive country to visit in the Middle East and harder to travel on a budget.

The entrance fee to Petra costs

– JD50 (~70$) for one day

– JD55(~77$) for two days

– JD60(~84$) for three or four days.

The multi-day tickets apply to consecutive days. The Jordan Pass (valid for the visa for certain countries + multiple entrance fees) has three different prices depending on how many days you spend in Petra.

With one-day entry to Petra: 70 JOD~ 99 USD

With two days entry to Petra: 75 JOD~ 106 USD

With three days entry to Petra: 80 JOD ~113 USD

Petra obelisk tomb

The bus is not fast; it stops for a photo before Wadi Rum at the Hejaz railway and along the highway, hoping the tourists will buy some souvenirs. That’s why it takes 3 hours to get from Aqaba to Wadi Musa.

So, if you are linked to public transport, you lose a lot of time departing from Aqaba/Wadi Rum.

The daily Jett bus returns from Wadi Musa/Petra to Aqaba at 5 pm. It means that making a day trip from Aqaba to Petra may not be the best choice, especially considering the expensive entrance fee to Petra. However, it can be enough if you only want to see the main points without walking much.

2. From Amman to Petra (235 km)

The daily Jett bus leaves at 6:30 to Wadi Musa, takes 3 hours and costs 10 JOD.

The daily Jett bus leaves at 17:00 from Wadi Musa to Amman.

Take a local tour of Petra

There are several day trips to Petra from Aqaba and Amman in Jordan.

But you can even visit Petra on a day trip from Israel (Eilat, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem) or Egypt (Dahab, Sharm-el Sheikh), which are, of course, costlier but possible.

Check the day and multi-day trips to Petra here

With rented car

Driving your car is the easiest way to get to Petra and, generally, to get around Jordan, as public transport is limited.

Where to sleep in Wadi Musa/Petra?

Petra is an archeological site, and tourists can stay nearby Wadi Musa, which has a range of guesthouses, good hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops.

Low-budget hostels/hotels

Rafiki hostel   is probably the best low-budget guesthouse in Petra, with dormitories and private rooms. On the top floor is a community room where you can spend the evening with other travelers, have a cup of tea, and smoke shisha. On specific days, the hostel cooks local specialties for which you can sign up. They organize local tours to nearby Little Petra or the Dead Sea. The manager gives you all the information on the upcoming tours, transport and tips on how to visit Petra. This is where I stayed two nights as a solo female traveler. It is only a short walk from the entrance to Petra and easy to find if you arrive with the daily bus from Aqaba/Wadi Rum.

Nomads Hotel Petra:  Another low-budget place to stay with dormitories and private rooms with an excellent location close to the Petra Visitors Center.

One Day Trip to Petra

A guide of our company will pick you up directly from the exit door of your hotel in Hurghada to bring you to the national airport, from where you will go to Taba, where an air-conditioned vehicle is already waiting for you. The driver will bring you to the port of Taba where you will board the ferry to Aqaba in Jordan . From there our representative will transfer you to Petra.

Before you can enter the city itself, you have to cross ‘ The Siq ‘ which is the main entrance to Petra and already a sight of its own. The walk through the Siq takes approximately half an hour before finally you will experience the breathtaking first view of Petra – a really dramatic approach and induction to the city. The narrow winding path through the canyon dramatically opens up to expose the awesome facade of the El-Khazneh , ‘the treasury’, Petra’s landmark.

Petra, the ‘rose-red city’, is located in the mountains, colored in different nuances of red, depending from time of day. Petra is an archaeological, architectonical and geological phenomenon. Your guide will share with you the legends, truths and myths of this incredible place. You will explore all the major sites and ruins on the route. The walk through Petra is made easy by the endless sights and fascinating facts which bring to life a history as colorful as the sandstone rock from which the city was carved. You will walk on the streets of this mystic city with buildings, tombs, baths, funerary halls, temples, arched gateways, and colonnaded streets, that were mostly carved from the kaleidoscopic sandstone, witnessing the technical and artistic genius of its inhabitants. On the way you will see a Roman Theatre, the Archeological Museum with its rich collection of interesting items found in Petra and the Nabatean Museum set into the hillside. You will have lunch in a local restaurant with international and Jordanian cuisine.

As soon as you will finish your Petra trip you will board the ferry back to Taba from where you will take the flight back to Hurghada and the transfer back to your hotel

What the Trip is Like

Egypt's climate is hot and dry most of the year. During the winter months (Dec-Feb), average daily temperatures are in the upper 60s°F on the Mediterranean coast and in the 80s°F in Aswan. In spring and fall, daytime temperatures can get up to the 90s°F. It can be quite cool in the evening, especially when on the Nile River. From January through March, the temperature is cooler, down to the 50s°F and 60s°F during the day, and dropping much lower at night, sometimes into the low 40s°F. Egypt has a very dry climate, which makes a temperature of 80°F feel much cooler than it would in a humid, tropical climate.

Jordan's climate is also very dry, and a bit cooler due to the altitude. In winter, temperatures range in the 50s°F and 60s°F during the day, dropping to the 30s°F and 40s°F at night. The fall is warmer, with daytime temperatures in the 80s°F and 90s°F, and nighttime temperatures in the high 50s°F to low 60s°F.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How long will I need at Petra to see the highlights?

All our Jordan trips include at least one full day at Petra, with most itineraries giving keen travelers the opportunity to spend part of a second day there too. Depending on your fitness level, you will be able to explore The Siq, Treasury, city center and two to three main sites such as the High Place of Sacrifice or the Royal Tombs in a full day.

When is the best time to visit Petra?

The peak tourism seasons in Petra are between March and May or September to November, when the weather is mildest.

Jordan , the weather can be very hot during summer and very cold during winter.

June to August are the hottest months, with maximum temperatures reaching approximately 104F. There is very little or no rainfall in these hotter months.

Over December and January, temperatures only reach a maximum of about 55F and rain is to be expected

Is it safe to visit Petra?

The safety of our travelers, leaders and operators is our number one priority, so consequently we monitor world events to ensure we amend itineraries when necessary.

Generally, Petra is very safe to visit, although there are two unauthorized trails that will take you to the top of The Treasury that are not on the maps provided and are not deemed to be safe.

Is the ticket price included in my Intrepid trip?

Yes, your local leader will provide you with your ticket and any other information you need about visiting Petra while on your trip.

If you stay around the lower, flatter parts of Petra, most travelers will cover an average of 12 kilometers over a full day. The walking trails have intensity ratings of easy, moderate and hard, so be guided by the maps you receive with your ticket when choosing which areas of Petra, you are best suited to explore.

Can I visit Petra if I have a physical disability?

Is there anywhere to buy food and drinks inside Petra?

Yes, there are a range of cafes and shops inside Petra where you can purchase meals, drinks or snacks.

At the top of many of the walking trails, you will find locals selling refreshments such as tea or soft drink.

We recommend travelers take a reusable water bottle with them so they stay hydrated and avoid buying single-use plastic water bottles.

Should I visit Petra by night?

Subject to availability, your leader may give you the opportunity to undertake an optional activity and visit Petra by night.

Petra by Night takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, but can be canceled due to bad weather.

The two-hour long show includes a candlelit walk to the Treasury, with local music and entertainment.

Some travelers love seeing the monuments lit up at night, while others feel it is crowded and very touristy. It’s completely up to you whether you go along, but please note it will be an additional cost to your day ticket.

Can we ride the animals inside Petra?

The entrance fee to Petra includes a ‘free’ ride on various forms of animal transport and you will be offered this transport by a number of local Bedouin on the walk into the ancient city. While free to ride, there is a strong expectation that you will need to tip the animals' owners.

In 2018 the animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched an international campaign highlighting the mistreatment of working animals in the ancient city of Petra. The animals – horses, donkeys and camels - carry both tourists and supplies to the city and through it.

The situation is a complex one – Jordanian organizations and their international partners are trying to improve the conditions for the animals, and for many local Bedouin this activity provides their only income, yet issues around animal cruelty are raised on a regular basis. UNESCO themselves have stated that switching to motorized transport is not the preferred option in the ancient city.

It is Intrepid’s request that our travelers avoid riding these animals where possible, due to the poor working conditions. On Intrepid trips, animal rides included in our itineraries are only undertaken once animal wellbeing has been previously established by a professional team. You can read our   Animal Welfare policy   for more information.

How to Plan a Day Trip to Petra

An ancient city carved into sandstone mountains, Petra offers the chance to hike through ruins and absorb ancient history

An ancient city carved into variegated sandstone mountains, Petra offers the chance to hike through jaw-dropping ruins – including the epic Treasury made famous by Indiana Jones, elaborate mausoleums, holy temples, and a Byzantine church with mosaic-tiled floors. Here’s how to see the historic city in Jordan in a day.

The history of petra.

The remains of this 2,000-year-old capital of the Nabatean empire offer a peek into a vanished culture, which thrived for hundreds of years until evolving trade routes left it languishing and vulnerable to Roman overthrow. A few earthquakes later and Petra was forgotten altogether under sand and rubble. Rediscovered in 1812, the city still has amazingly large portions intact.

If you have only one day to explore this New Wonder of the World, enjoy our guide to the must-see highlights. You can also now visit Petra with Culture Trip on our nine-day small-group Jordan adventure , avoiding the crowds by entering through the ‘back door’ route.

Pro tip : Prior to arrival, purchase the Jordan Wanderer Pass online to save on the Petra entrance fee. Importantly, the pass also includes Jordan’s obligatory entrance visa fee.

Breakfast at Sanabel Bakery – or enjoy a fancy buffet

Roll into town bright and early for a stop at Sanabel Bakery to snag a traditional Arabic breakfast. Sanabel is known for sticky sweet baklava, but also offers a wide selection of other pastries and bread – including savoury snacks perfect for a picnic lunch. It’s also one of the few breakfast places in town open at 6am. Grab a few mini pizzas and cookies for snacks later. Movenpick Petra, conveniently located mere steps from the entrance to Petra, also offers an early-morning breakfast buffet, if you prefer a more lavish meal to start the day.

Pro tip: Wear a hat and suntan lotion and don’t forget to buy water at Sanabel. It’s easy to get dehydrated and sun-scorched when hiking Petra. Water is available for purchase in the park but isn’t always available when you’re parched. There is limited shade and you’ll be walking anywhere from 14km to 18km (9mi to 11mi), including well over 1,000 stairs, so plan to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.

Come to the Movenpick Hotel for a grand buffet breakfast to start your day

Petra Archaeological Park Visitor Centre

Arrive at the main gate early to avoid the crowds, particularly before 8am when bus-loads of tourists reach the park. If you have time, stroll through the museum, which is usually in Petra city centre but is temporarily relocated in the visitor centre. Snag a map and consider hiring a guide. While it is easy to see the most popular sights independently, you may want an expert escort for off-the-beaten-track adventures. Many visitors hire unofficial guides at lower rates, but there are no guarantees about the quality of service provided.

Pro tip: The visitor centre maps aren’t always detailed and they run out occasionally, so do your homework in advance and print several maps – or better yet, bring a GPS device loaded with Hiking in Jordan e-trails maps. If you plan to take Wadi Muthilim, verify the route is open and there is no risk of flash floods.

Road to the Siq

The wide road to the Siq is uneventful other than a troupe of local men offering horse rides, the Obelisk Tomb and a couple of Djinn Blocks – the latter of which have nothing to do with the actual djinns and are instead housing for vertical graves. Cover this ground quickly so you can spend more time in the Siq and the heart of Petra.

Pro tip: A horse ride to the Siq is said to be included in the ticket price, but beware – a hefty tip will be expected at the end of your ride. Negotiate the tip in advance. And as with all animals in the park, make sure the animal is well treated before saddling up.

When taking a horse ride to the Siq, negotiate your tip in advance

Stroll the peaceful, shady Siq for a Zen-like experience and absorb the majesty and organic beauty, with the only sounds from occasional horse hooves as carriages pass. Most of the 4,000ft (1,220m) downhill walk is evenly paved – other than a few preserved patches of Roman paving stones. The dramatic walls of the naturally occurring geological ravine – nearly 600ft (180m) high at points – and the advanced water-control systems were abandoned, transforming the Siq into a seasonal waterway: with flash floods wearing away the walls over the centuries.

Pro tip: Keep your eyes peeled for the notable sights along the way – including two tombs, a scattering of votive niches and the hint of a caravan relief almost completely eroded away, with only the footprints of camels and people left to tell the story.

The naturally occurring walls of the Siq can reach nearly 600ft (180m) high at points

The Treasury

After a 20-minute walk through the Siq, you’ll arrive at the most famous sight in Petra, the Treasury, or Al Khazaneh in Arabic. The 130ft (40m) tall, two-storey Hellenistic structure likely served as a tomb for a Nabataean king – or possibly a library – but the name comes from a local legend involving an Egyptian pharaoh’s hidden treasure, which has never been found. Look off to the left for steps carved into the mountainside, just beyond the Bedouin cafes. It’s a 15-minute climb with an epic payoff: the view of the Treasury from above is one of the most stunning ways to gaze at the crown gem of Petra.

Pro tip: The stone steps aren’t well maintained, so they can be a bit treacherous – proceed with caution. If they’re closed to the public, which they occasionally are, take the Al-Khubtha Trail in the afternoon to get that epic selfie-above-the-Treasury shot you know you want.

The 15-minute climb up is worth it for special views of the Treasury

The Theatre

As you walk from the Treasury down the main trail, you’ll walk the Street of Facades lined with souvenir sellers. Next, you’ll see the Royal Tombs to your right – explore those in the afternoon. Take time to explore the amphitheatre on your left. Originally built by the Nabateans to seat 3,000 spectators, the Theatre was expanded in 106CE by the conquering Romans to seat around 8,500 people, with carved niches above, perhaps some of the first skyboxes in the world.

Pro tip: The Theatre is sometimes roped off for preservation, but you may be able to hike up around the sides to look from above. Just keep in mind that the day is young and you have miles to go and more than a thousand steps to climb.

The Romans expanded the Theatre to seat around 8,500 people

Petra city centre

After the Theater, continue along the main wadi (valley) and take the rest of the morning to explore the sights along the Colonnaded Street between the Theater and the steps to the Monastery – check the map and choose which appeals to you. Not to be missed are the Temple of the Winged Lions; the active excavation site at Great Temple; Qasr al Bint, one of the only free-standing structures in the Park; and the intricate mosaics at Petra Church.

Pro tip: The ruins of Petra Church – sometimes called the Byzantine Church – are shaded by a protective tent, which can offer a brief respite from the desert sun.

Look down when you visit Petra Church to see marvellous mosaics

Lunch and the Monastery

Those without packed lunches can stop at Basin Restaurant near the foot of the stairs to the Monastery. After, climb the steps, then catch your breath at one of the Bedouin cafes facing the monument. The Monastery edifice is larger than the more famous Treasury, but is less often visited by tourists because of its remote location – the only routes are up the taxing stairs from below or a 4mi (7km) hike from the other side. Take in the sheer majesty of the 164ft (50m) wide, 147ft (45m) high marvel, then continue past the Monastery for unforgettable panoramic overlooks. Unpack your picnic if you have one, or just relax and take in the views of Wadi Araba.

Pro tip: Keep an eye on the time and remember – from Basin Restaurant the return to the gate is slightly uphill, so it may take a bit longer.

The Monastery of Al-Deir is larger than the Treasury, but less visited

After, return along the Colonnaded Street and head for the Royal Tombs. Start with the closest, Urn, and work your way back through the Silk and Corinthian. Don’t turn back after the impressive Palace Tomb – one of the largest edifices in the park – but instead continue along a few hundred yards to see Sextius Florentinus, an impressive tomb with individual crypts carved into the interior walls. From here, if time allows, head to the Christian Tombs then turn around and return the way you came – or head to the mouth of Wadi Muthilim Trail.

The impressive Urn Tomb is one of several royal mausoleums to explore

Al Khubtha Trail

This optional detour will take you to a spectacular view of the Treasury from above. To follow the Al Kuhubtha Trail, which has a strenuous but not challenging ascent, take the steps located about 479ft (146m) to the left of Palace Tomb, before Sextius Florentinus Tomb. You may need to consult a map or ask a local for directions, but this 2mi (3km) round-trip trail to and from the Treasury overlook offers some of the best views in the park.

Take the Al Khubtha Trail for a spectacular view of the Treasury

Wadi Muthilim Trail

If you’re up for some canyoning, rather than returning to the Street of Facades after the last tomb, continue on and follow the wadi that hugs the back of Khubtha Mountain. It starts about 2,600ft (790m) from Sextius Florentinus Tomb: turn right into the narrow ravine of the Wadi Muthilim Trail – also called the Tunnel Trail by local guides. This route is more challenging and includes scrambling over a few boulders – difficult alone, but doable with a buddy – possibly splashing through some water and ducking through a 289ft (88m) Nabatean tunnel. The Wadi Muthilim Trail leads to the dam at the Siq entrance.

Pro tip: There is a serious risk of flash floods on the Wadi Muthilim Trail which is why experts strongly suggest hiring a guide. On your way into the park, stop at the visitor centre to find out whether the trail is passable. To see Wadi Muthlim clearly marked on a map, check out the Jordan Trail Little Petra to Petra map .

Take a cooking class or enjoy a mellow dinner

For one of the best experiences in Wadi Musa, take a cooking class at the highly regarded Petra Kitchen and learn how to make a multi-course Bedouin-Jordanian dinner with farm-fresh local ingredients. For a less interactive dinner, try the classic low-key Red Cave Restaurant on Tourist Street – not far from the park entrance. Order up a feast of mezze, mixed grill, maqlooba and other Bedouin specialties while sipping minty lemonade on the no-frills patio.

Pro tip : If you don’t mind taking a taxi or walking uphill, there are other popular restaurants on the higher ground, including Al Arabia for falafel and shawarma, or Al Wadi for a more extensive but still traditional menu, which also includes a number of vegetarian options.

Take a cooking class to learn how to create traditional Bedouin-Jordanian food

Petra by Night and Cave Bar

For the grand finale, consider Petra by Night, which runs on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. You’ll walk guests walk the main path through the Siq to ogle the Treasury lit by hundreds of candles, with the sound of live Arabic music reverberating off the sandstone cliffs. The event wraps up at 10.30pm, which is just enough time to return to Wadi Musa and grab a drink in a 2,000-year-old cave at the aptly named Cave Bar – just outside the park gates at Petra Guest House, also known as the Crowne Plaza.

Pro tip: Pictures taken with your phone at Petra by Night will be pitch black – there just isn’t enough light. If you have a proper DLSR camera and a tripod, this is the time to whip them out. A long exposure is the only way to truly capture the Treasury in the candlelit glow.

If you time your trip right, you can catch Petra by Night to see the Treasury lit up by candles

DAY 5 – Mount Nebo, Madaba and Dead Sea Leisure Time

The 5th day of your Cairo to Petra holiday begins with another fabulous hotel breakfast, and then you will be heading out for another wonderful day of sightseeing.

First, you will be taken visit Mount Nebo and an old monastery. Mount Nebo is of course the place where Moses first cast his gaze upon the Promised Land before he died, and many people believe that he was later buried on Mount Nebo as well.

For many visitors, the highlight of this visit is the incredible view you get when you reach the old monastery. From this vantage point, you get a splendid view of the Jordan Valley; the Dead Sea, and even parts of the Holy Land far in the distance.

After spending some time on Mt. Nebo, you will then be taken to Madaba, the city of mosaics, where you will enjoy a visit to the magnificent Greek Orthodox Basilica of St. George.

This truly amazing church still functions as one of Jordan’s main places of Christian worship, but it is most famous for its ancient 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. This remarkably accurate mosaic map consists of more than 2 million vividly colored stones, all of which were sourced locally.

From the church, you will make your way to the Dead Sea. Despite its name, the Dead Sea is in fact a vast lake, rather than an ocean. The immediate area surrounding the Dead Sea is approximately 400 meters below sea level, making it the lowest place on earth.

The Dead Sea is of course most famous for its incredibly mineral-rich mud and its incredibly salty water which makes it easy for people to float effortlessly on the water. The mud and sediment is rich in minerals which are today found in many luxury skin care products.

Enjoy some time floating on the water and enjoying the mud, and then as evening times begins approaching, you will be driven back to your luxury hotel in Amman.

DAY 6 – Day Tour of Petra, the Lost City

As usual, today will start with a fabulous breakfast being served at your hotel, and then shortly after you have finished eating, you will be picked up, and you will be taken to see Jordan’s premier sightseeing attraction, the ancient city of Petra.

Petra tours typically involve a lot of walking, so it is highly recommended that you eat a good breakfast beforehand and also that you wear a comfortable pair of shoes.

Also known as the Rose Red City of Petra, this indescribable site never fails to astonish and amaze, no matter how many times you visit. Just picture an 80 to 200-meter deep gorge running more than 1000 meters through desert rock, with an entire city carved into the sides of the gorge.

From the visitor center, it is about 700-meters to the Siq entrance but you will be covering this distance on a horse, and it is from the Siq entrance that the magic of your tour begins in earnest. The Ancient Nabatean Arabs carved hundreds of places into the rock faces, including tombs; bath houses; storerooms; vaults, burial chambers, and the site’s most impressive structure of all, the Treasury.

There is no way anyone would be able to see everything at this site in a single day, but you can be sure that your tour will see you visiting all of the best features. You will also enjoy a wonderful ride on horseback while you are there, which in itself is a wonderful experience, given the spectacular setting.

With so much sightseeing and so much walking behind you, you will be taken back to your hotel where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest and a good night’s sleep on the last night of your Cairo to Petra tour.

DAY 7 – Cairo to Petra Tour Ends and Final Departure

Unfortunately, like all good things in life, your magical Cairo to Jordan, Road to Petra Holiday has come to an end, but before you go anywhere, first sit down and enjoy one last good breakfast at the hotel. A little bit later in the day, and at the appropriate time, one of our tour representatives will fetch you from your hotel; he will get you checked out, and then he will escort you to the airport in time for you to catch your flight back home.

Your holiday has only lasted 7 days, and now it is over as well, but you can be sure that it will have been an experience which you will remember forever. One Day In Petra Itinerary – How to Spend a Perfect Day in Petra, Jordan

Petra, an ancient city in the southwestern part of modern-day Jordan, is one of the most visited tourist sites in the world. This place is both a unique memorial to an ancient civilization and the former capital of the Nabatean kingdom, a civilization of ancient Arab people who lived in northern Arabia and southern Levant. They built the city so precisely that the sun illuminates the sacred places in it. Therefore, your one day in Petra is bound to be magical, and here’s how to best prepare for it.

One day in Petra Itinerary

What’s the Best Time to Visit Petra?

Spring and/or autumn is the best time to visit Petra as the weather is not too hot and not too cold – just right. If you like it cold, visit Petra in January because the temperature ranges from 2 to 14 ºC in that period.

Pro tip, if you want to avoid the hot sun, tourists and to see one of the most beautiful sunsets, visit Petra in the late afternoon. There are not so many tourists in the morning, either.

Al Siq Canyon, Petra

A Few Facts About Petra

The Nabataeans were a nomadic Bedouin tribe who wandered in the Arabian Desert searching for water and pasture between the 4th and 2nd centuries BCE. Described as be the most talented people in the ancient world, they were extremely skilled water engineers and traders, which is why Petra had a sophisticated water channel system, which could supply with water 30 000 citizens.

Camels in Petra

Petra is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Jordan’s most visited tourist site. It is also called a Rose City because of the color of the stones and the Lost City because it was lost for centuries before it was discovered by Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, a Swiss historian, in 1812.

This place was the core city for trades between Arabia, Egypt, and Syria-Phoenicia. Silks from China, spices from India, and incenses from Arabia were all sold here. In 1985, Petra Archaeological park became a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One Day in Petra Itinerary

Use this guide to learn more about the best places to visit in Petra, Jordan. Here is a list of must-visit places for your perfect one-day itinerary!

Visit the Treasury of Petra

Petra Treasury is one of the most famous and photographed places there. Its magnificent facade opens a path to the other jewels of the city. Spend some time there observing one of the most beautiful treasuries of the ancient world.

Treasury of Petra

The Street of Facades

A short while after you pass the Treasury, a part of the city with tomb facades carved into the rock will open in front of you. The Street of Facades has many incredible details an average tourist could easily miss, so it’s good to have a guide while here.

Street of facades, Petra

Royal Tombs

In the town’s centre, there are several huge mausoleums with incredibly impressive facades. They are carved in the western slope of the Jabal al-Khubtha rock. The tombs have a two-story substructure of arched vaults and a large colonnaded courtyard in front of it, and from here you can enjoy a great view of the city.

Royal Tombs, Petra

The Colonnaded Street

The once bustling town center of Petra was full of shops and vendors. Today, impressive columns still stand as a reminder of that time, and the heart of the town is what is called the Colonnaded Street. It was created somewhere at the beginning of second century AD.

Collonaded Street, Petra

Nabatean Theater

As a part of your day trip, you really should visit Nabatean Theater. Yes, it too was carved in stone (a part of it, to be more precise), which makes for a pretty impressive sight. It’s only a short walk from the Petra’s center, so it’s very much worth a look.

Nabatean Theater, Petra

Ad Deir Monastery

This is one of the largest monuments in Petra: 47m wide and 48m high! The monastery was built in the second century AD by King Rabel II. Now when you look at the ruins, you still can find the pieces of facades and columned porticos.

Oh, and there’s a spa here, too.

Day trips from Petra

Petra is one of many touristic Jordan’s sites. It is surrounded by some other great places you can visit on your day trip from Petra.

The Valley of Moses is located in Southern Jordan. It is an important gateway city to Petra, where tired tourists mostly soak in Turkish baths. There are plenty of sites to visit as well: the Byzantine church, for example, dates back to the 6 th century.

Wadi Musa

You can rent a car and get to Wadi Rum from Wadi Musa within two hours. It is a protected area where the valley cuts into the sandstone and granite rock. There are many ancient petroglyphs scraped on the red rocks. Here you can meet authentic Bedouins and Zalabieh tribe! Also, a great place to enjoy some rock climbing!

Wadi Rum

Lawrence’s Spring

Ain Asshallaleh is the historical place where Prince Feisal bin Al-Hussein and T.E. Lawrence made the headquarters to fight for the Arab Empire against the Ottomans during World War I. The area is a great red dune in Wadi Um Ishrin. You can go there to see the Canyon and the rock drawings. The ruins of Lawrence’s house are in the valley and there Bedouin tribes living in the area.

Extra tips for visiting Petra:

Before visiting the place, make sure you read about its culture and nature. Here are some tips that will help you make your trip to Petra more comfortable.

When buying the tickets to Petra, you automatically pay:

– Border tickets fee – 90JD (US $127), with the refund of 40JD (US $57) if you are returning the next day;

– The price for the non-accommodated visitor is 90JD (US $127);

– The price for the accommodated visitor per one day is 50 JD (US $70), per two days – 55 JD (US $77), per three days 60JD (US $85).

There are also optional services such and touristic routes. To learn more about them, visit Petra’s official website.

– Take appropriate clothes. You will need hiking shoes and light, loose-fitting cotton clothes. Also, do not forget to take a hat that will protect you from the sun;

– Go early in the morning. 6 or 7 in the morning will be the perfect time to start your tour. You will skip the crowds of tourists and the scorching sun;

– Do not go to the caves with fake Bedouins. There are people in the city dressed as the Bedouins who offer to show tourists their cave homes. Do not believe them: the original ones were moved out by the government years ago;

– Bring your lunch with you! There are many restaurants there, but the food is average and pricey. Some hotels offer to pack a takeaway lunch – it is a great option;

– Do not ride animals: they are poorly treated. Instead, you can support local handicrafts. It will be much better not to give money to people who exploit animals. Do not worry: all the routes are not long, so you will not get tired.

Make sure you have everything you need

What to pack for your next trip.

Make your next trip as simple and as enjoyable as possible by packing smart. It’s amazing how much stress top travel items can save you, so choose carefully. Things like lightweight travel backpacks, for example, are ideal for short trips and allow you to move around with ease, and a passport holder will make sure you keep your documents safe at all times. Check our travel checklist guide for 2021 to make sure you haven’t missed anything, and travel to your next destination in style and with maximum comfort.

I’m interested in touring Jordan for 3 days sometime in May. I’m currently in southern Israel until July.

Are you open for business at this time? Are there certain Covid-19 restrictions in place? Can I cross into Jordan from Israel?

Thanks very much!

Map for the Egypt & Jordan: Pyramids to Petra tour

Brush up on your hieroglyphs, board your overnight flight to Egypt, and get some shut eye—just channel your inner mummy. You’re about to uncover a trip you’ll never forget.

Welcome to Giza, just a hop across the Nile from Cairo, Egypt’s capital, and home to some really, really, really old stuff like the Pyramids. Give ’em a wave, because they’re literally RIGHT THERE. Casual.

Today's highlights:

  • Meet an EF representative and fellow travelers as they arrive at the airport.
  • Transfer to your hotel to check in and check out your room.
  • Rest up before your adventure begins in the AM.

Forget everything you learned in history class. Actually, don’t do that. Just be prepared to have your mind blown seeing all the Egyptian stuff you learned about in school as you tour Cairo.

  • Visit the Egyptian Museum to gawk at ancient artifacts and learn about Egyptology.
  • Explore Coptic Cairo, a historically Christian neighborhood and home to some of the world’s oldest churches.
  • Float like a butterfly to the Muhammed Ali Mosque (named for the founder of modern Egypt, not the boxer) within the Salah El-Din Citadel.
  • Enjoy a Welcome Dinner with your fellow travelers.

It’s here. You're seeing the oldest and only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World: the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. This is not a drill, people. This is one of humankind’s greatest accomplishments in the flesh.

  • Tour the grounds and take plenty of pics at the Giza Necropolis, where you’ll learn about the construction, excavation, and the pharaohs buried here.
  • Experience the unrivaled majesty of the Great Pyramids.
  • Shake paws with the Great Sphinx—part lion, part human, 100% awesome.

Say hello to Amman! Jordan’s capital is a bustling metropolis with all the amenities you could want, friendly Arabic chatter in the streets, and beautifully preserved ancient ruins.

  • Hop a morning flight to Amman, Jordan.
  • Spend the afternoon sightseeing with your Tour Director.
  • Hit the souk for dinner on your own and some souvenir hunting.

Take a day trip to Jerash, sometimes called “The Pompeii of the East.” No volcanoes here, though—just perfectly preserved Greco-Roman ruins. Then make your way to the Dead Sea for a dip in the lowest point on Earth.

  • Strut down the streets of Jerash like an emperor, stopping at Hadrian’s Arch, built to honor an (actual) emperor’s visit in 129 AD.
  • Get in the ring at the Hippodrome—an ancient Greek arena used for horse racing.
  • Swim in the Dead Sea and see what water ten times saltier than the ocean feels like.
  • Head back to Amman for a night of free time.

Today you’re going to Wadi Musa, or “Valley of Moses,” the nearest town to the wonder that is Petra. On the way, learn about sustainable development at Al Numeira and visit Little Petra, or as we like to call it, Petra Jr.

  • Stop at Al Numeira for an authentic Jordanian lunch and learn about the organization’s sustainable practices.
  • Continue to Little Petra, which is just as "whoa” as Big Petra, but cuter and with fewer people.
  • Arrive in Wadi Musa, just a hop, a skip, and a jump from Petra.
  • Take the evening to explore and chill with your fellow travelers.

One of the most magnificent feats in ancient architecture, Petra, the Sandstone City, awaits you through a spectacular winding canyon. Continue to the desert oasis of Wadi Rum for a magical night of stargazing.

  • Join a local guide on a Siq walk of Petra. Siq means canyon, but yeah, it IS pretty sick.
  • Gaze at the world-famous Al-Khazneh temple carved right into the cliffs.
  • Travel to Wadi Rum—you might recognize it from countless movies, like The Martian and a few Star Wars films.
  • Relax at an included dinner, then goggle at the stars with professional astronomers.

Today you’re in for a thrill ride: a Jeep 4x4 tour of the Wadi Rum Desert Valley, the closest thing there is to Mars on Earth. Check out red sand dunes, wild rock formations, and even the house Lawrence of Arabia lived in.

  • Climb into your 4x4 and experience Wadi Rum with an expert local guide.
  • Soak in the sights in ways you wouldn’t be able to on foot.
  • Enjoy an included dinner and free time to bask in the otherworldly beauty of Wadi Rum.

Get killer sunrise views of Wadi Rum from the vantage point only a hot air balloon can provide. This excursion is  pre-book  only; if your trip is less than twenty days away, please call 800-766-2645 to purchase.

You’re back in Amman, the White City, and the perfect place to spend your last day in Jordan. Where did the time go? We’ll tell you—making new friends, exploring ancient pyramids, and stargazing in the desert, nbd.

  • Stop at Kerak en route to Amman to check out a big ol’ castle built by Christian crusaders in the 1100s.
  • Chow down on some mansaf, scroll through your pics, and relive all the mems on your last day.
  • Share some laughs (and maybe shed a few tears) at an included Farewell Dinner with your group.

Ma’a salama ‘asadqayaa! Translation: Goodbye, friends! Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?

The place is perhaps most famous for its role as the Holy Grail's resting place in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade , appearing also in 'Transformers'.

Can You See Petra in One Day?

Yes, it is possible to spend just one day in Petra. However, I do recommend allocating more time to fully explore the site.

On a Petra one-day itinerary, you can cover the main highlights like the Treasury, the Monastery, and the Siq, but it may not allow for an in-depth exploration of all the areas within Petra.

If you’re planning on visiting Petra, Jordan but want someone else to do the organization for you, then you might want to consider a tour of Petra with transportation included.

If you’ve only got 2 days in Jordan, an organized tour might be the best way to see a lot in a short space of time Here are my top recommendations for organized tours.

Where to Stay In Petra

There are plenty of options for places to stay. Because of the early starts, it’s more practical to stay at one of the resorts just outside the archaeological park entrance. However, these do come at a premium.

You can find more affordable options in the nearby town of Wadi Musa. Here are my top two picks on where to stay during your Petra two days itinerary.

Boutique Accommodation – Movenpick Resort Petra

This first-class resort is situated right at the entrance of the Petra archaeological park. It offers a luxurious experience with a touch of oriental charm, featuring Middle Eastern fabrics and textures.

Is It Safe to Visit Petra?

If you’re concerned about safety during your vacation in Petra, Jordan, rest assured, Jordan is generally considered safe for tourists.

The most prevalent issues are being scammed by taxi drivers – find out from staff at your accommodation for the typical price of a journey, and before you get into a taxi check the fare they state aligns with the price your accommodation suggested.

I also recommended dressing slightly more conservatively, especially as a female, as Jordan is a Muslim country. Although there are no strict rules on dress, when you travel to Petra , Jordan it’s worth being respectful to their culture.

Tickets for 2 Days in Petra

During my trip to Jordan , I had planned for a 2 day Petra visit as well as the Petra at Night experience.

You have the option to purchase passes for 1, 2, or 3 days to enter Petra. Remember to bring your passport as your name will be printed on the ticket, which is checked at the entrance. Tickets can be purchased in advance, at the gate, or as part of an organized tour with an official guide.

Another option is the Jordan Pass, including a visa and attractions bundle, which can be obtained before entering Jordan from neighbouring destinations like Tel Aviv or Cairo.

I highly recommend dedicating 2 days to visit Petra, Jordan. This gives you plenty of time to appreciate the sights, relax, and explore the surrounding hiking trails.

The Best 2 Days in Petra, Jordan

If you’re wondering how to visit Petra, efficiently in two days, this section tells you how.

I’ve listed all of these great places to visit in Petra in a logical order, so they form a route you can follow to make the most out of your time there.

Petra Itinerary – Day 1

Start your Petra two day itinerary early and be at the gate before sunrise. Walk down the Siq crowd-free and stand in front of the iconic Treasury.

From here continue past the Street of Facades, the Amphitheatre, and onto the Royal Tombs. Climb up to one of the lookout points to view the Treasury from above.

Then, take the trail out to Petras’s second most recognised landmark – the Monastery before hiking back out of the archaeological park.

Refresh yourself in the late afternoon and get ready to head back into Petra Archeological Park to experience Petra by Night.

Petra Visitors Center

You’ll start the day here. If you haven’t purchased your ticket in advance, you can conveniently buy it at the Petra Visitor Centre. This building also serves as Petra Tourist Office – here’s where you can also book an official Petra Guide, the Petra at Night experience or find out from the staff what to do in Petra.

This building houses a small but informative museum and offers decent WiFi. However, the eateries and souvenir shops surrounding the Visitor Centre are often overpriced and of mediocre quality, so I advise bypassing these unless necessary.

Additionally, there is a useful luggage storage facility available here where you can securely store larger items like suitcases or backpacks for the entire day.

The Gateway – Bab Al Siq

Bab Al Siq serves as the impressive entrance to Petra and acts as the gateway to the Siq, the main trail leading into the archaeological park. In Arabic, the term “Bab” means “gateway,” symbolizing the significance of Bab Al Siq as the entrance to Petra.

As you begin your walk from the park entrance to the Siq, you’ll come across various smaller temples and monuments. You’ll see some enormous square rock structures known as Djinn blocks.

Another notable sight is the Obelisk tomb, featuring a temple topped with four pyramids.

Bab Al Siq in Petra Jordan featuring a small entrance on a large rock formation on a sand stone color

The Siq, the gateway into Petra, is the second most iconic landmark. The remnants of a large gatehouse and arch can be seen at the entrance.

This natural rock formation stretches over 90 meters in height, with sheer walls along its 1.2-kilometre length. As you navigate the Siq, you may feel slight disappointment with every turn, expecting to catch a glimpse of the Treasury. However, the anticipation is rewarded when the breathtaking view of the Treasury finally emerges.

This iconic sight is considered one of the most beautiful places in Petra, making the journey through the Siq truly memorable.

The Treasury (Al Khaznah)

You’ll feel like you’ve seen The Treasury before as you finally approach this majestic facade. It’s one of Petra’s most iconic sights, carved from red sandstone with amazing details, columns and statues.

It’s worth getting up early to visit Petra and enjoy The Treasury with fewer crowds. I arrived before the masses of crowds, there were just some photographers, vendors and camels. Although I’m not the biggest fan of early starts, it’s worth it to get to experience this! Later on, it gets very busy.

You can’t enter The Treasury, but it has three chambers inside and maybe a hidden tomb below. No one knows its true purpose.

The Street of Facades

The only way to go to The Street of Facades is to the right and along the bigger opening, unless you turn around and exit the Siq or ascend one of the lookout points and cliff-top hikes (I’ll explain more about lookout sites later).

These are reportedly burial grounds and are well titled given the quantity of carvings on the rock face.

The Street of Facades in Petra, Jordan, features impressive carved rock formations, characterized by their large size.; at the bottom of these formations, there are small entrances, all set against a backdrop of a clear blue sky.

The Theatre

You can’t miss the enormous theatre carved into the side of the cliff on your left-hand side. It is not possible to enter and climb over it like the other old theatres in Jordan like those at Jerash or the ancient theatre in Amman .

This theatre may have held a maximum of 4,000 spectators sitting. Just picture this space’s acoustics.

You can access The High Place of Sacrifice by using the path that runs directly to the right of the theatre.

The Royal Tombs

  • Urn Tomb – Look up as you are standing in the collonaded courtyard outside this temple. You’ll notice three hollows that lead to burial rooms around halfway up. While the main building is accessible, the chambers are not. This tomb derives its name from the ‘Urn’ at the top; up close, it can be difficult to make out the shape, but from a distance, it is easy to see.
  • Silk Tomb – The Silk Tomb is close to the Urn Tomb. The sandstone of this tomb has the most stunning swirls of red, orange, purple, and yellow colour. This is also how the Tomb got its name.
  • Corinthian Tomb – The Corinthian Tomb was once a gorgeous younger sister of The Treasury. Unfortunately, erosion over the years has reduced it to a mere ghost of its former splendour. After worshipers had been cleansed in one of the four basins outside of the temple, they would enter one of the four halls inside, which were utilized for various rites.

The Corinthian Tomb (2nd left) and The Silk Tomb (3rd right) on a large rock formations

  • Palace Tomb – The Palace Tomb is the last of the four Royal Tombs. It’s clear why it’s been given this name given the large five-story facade and plethora of columns. This is the largest Royal Tomb. It’s around 50 meters in both width and height. It even had its own mini dam and water reservoir! The building is impressive with four gates each leading to a burial room, 12 ornate columns on the bottom tier, and another 18 pillars above, which are all stunning features.

The Palace Tomb in Petra, Jordan, boasts four entrances, each showcasing intricate carved rock structures.

  • The Sextius Florentinus Tomb – This tomb is located farther north and away from the string of four Royal Tombs. It is named after Sextius Florentinus, who in 129 AD served as the administrator of the Arab state. It has a similar appearance to the Corinthian Tomb in that it has been severely eroded, yet you can still make out columns with triangular decorations on top and Latin inscriptions.

The Treasury Lookouts – For FREE!

If you want a stunning photo of Petra’s Treasury, I recommend climbing up the cliff and snap it from above. Don’t let the camel sellers in front of the Treasury tell you otherwise. They will try to charge you for the view. You can do it yourself for FREE!

Just follow the Al-Khubtha Trail behind The Sextiux Florentinus. It’s a relatively steep climb with lots of steps, but it’s easy to follow –  you won’t get lost. The Petra trail leads to a cosy tent cafe where you can enjoy some mint tea and gaze at the amazing sight below.

The Lion Triclinium

Head back down from the viewing point and away from the Royal Tombs. You’re going to start making your way out to the Monastery before the crowds get too big.

The Lion Triclinium is located on a slope and requires a little bit of a detour on the way up to the Monastery. It is a modest tomb with a single entry faced by two lion carvings that have a very worn appearance.

The Lion Triclinium in Petra, Jordan, features a single entry adorned with two lion carvings at the entrance, basking in the gentle glow of sunlight.

The Monastery (Ad Deir)

If you love adventure, you’ll adore the Monastery! It’s a bit off the beaten track, but trust me, it’s worth the climb and effort of getting there.

You’ll follow 730 ancient steps through a scenic valley until you reach a stunning plateau. There, you’ll see the biggest and most impressive Petra temple. It’s a masterpiece of rock-cut architecture, with elegant columns and a vivid blue sky backdrop.

You can peek inside, but there’s not much to see. Just some benches, an altar, and some crosses on the wall – that’s why they call it the ‘Monastery’.

Spend some time around the Monastery, there are a few cafes and eateries here. Then as the peak of the crowds is beginning to arrive, take the same trail back.

Because of today’s early start and the that you’re coming back to Petra in the evening, I recommend taking a leisurely walk back out stopping off to enjoy the view or explore some of the smaller ruins en route.

Petra by Night

Imagine seeing The Treasury in Petra glowing with candles and music! One of the best things to do in Petra on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights is to visit when Petra opens after dark.

You’ll follow a path of 1500 lanterns through The Siq and arrive at in front of the majestic facade of the Treasury. Mats have been laid out, where you can sit and be entertained by traditional music. Then, watch as The Treasury lights up with different colours. It’s a magical and fun way to see Petra!

Remember, you’ll need a special ticket for this night’s show – it’s not included in the day ticket. I advise booking Petra by Night in advance, but you might also be able to purchase a ticket on the day from the Petra Visitor Centre.

The Treasury in Petra, Jordan, glows beautifully, illuminated by the warm light of hundreds of candles during the night.

Petra Itinerary – Day 2

The second of your two days in Petra trip starts with a hike up to the High Place of Sacrifice. Take the winding word stairs up for one of the best panoramic views of the archaeological park.

Take the trail down the back of the valley, and visit some of the lesser-known buildings, including The Garden Triclinium and Tomb of The Roman Soldier.

The trail will eventually lead you out to the Collanaded Street, which you walked along yesterday on the way to the Monastery. Spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring the selection of ruins around here before heading back out of Petra Park.

The High Place of Sacrifice

If you love a challenge and a stunning view, don’t miss the High Place of Sacrifice! Follow the ancient steps behind the Theatre and climb to the top. You’ll see two obelisks and an altar carved from the rock. Imagine the rituals that happened here!

There are several hiking trails in Petra. This one leads you to a peaceful spot with amazing views of Petra and Wadi Farasa. Not many tourists come here, so you can enjoy the beauty of the desert pretty much to yourself.

The ancient steps to the High Place of Sacrifice located at Petra, Jordan

The Lion Fountain

As you leave the High Place of Sacrifice, descend the other side of the cliff, away from the main park. On your way down, you’ll go past the Lion Fountain sculpted in the rock. It’s amazing how you can still recognize the lion’s shape despite the erosion.

A man and a young boy, accompanied by their horse, stand in front of the intricately carved Lion Fountain sculptures.

The Garden Triclinium

As you explore the Wadi Farasa Valley, you’ll discover some amazing temples that most tourists miss. This path takes you to some hidden gems of Petra’s ruins. The first one is the Garden Triclinium.

This temple was not for burials but for water rituals. Check out the water tank in front of it! However, I wouldn’t be drinking or touching the water in there!

The Garden Triclinium in Petra Jordan showcases a large two columns with a view of high cliff rock formations on a sunny day

Tomb of The Roman Soldier

Not far from the  Garden Triclinium, you’ll find the Tomb of the Roman Soldier. It gets its name from the three statues of warriors in the niches. The place is full of ancient fragments of temples and tombs. They say this tomb was once part of a huge and lost exit temple complex.

From the Tomb of the Roman Soldier, you’ll loop back around and probably come out somewhere near Collonaded Street. The path is a little ambiguous here, but I did end up finding a small dried-up river bed which I followed back down to the main area.

Although you’re unlikely to get that lost – it is a little unnerving – especially as the desert in the distance is so vast. There’s next to no one on these trails, just the odd shepherd and tourist. I do suggest having some form of the offline map here just for your peace of mind.

The Colonnaded Street

If you love old cities, you’ll adore Petra’s Colonnaded Street with its stones and pillars. The Nabateans made it first, but the Romans widened it to 6 metres later.

It was like a mall, a market and a hangout spot all in one. Don’t miss the stairs on the left that lead to the plaza. That was the core of the city back then.

The Colonnaded Street with ascending pillars made of sand stone on a sunny day at Petra, Jordan

The Nymphaeum

You’ll see the Nymphaeum as soon as you enter the Collonaded Street. It was once a stunning public fountain covered with lots of decoration. Even though it’s not as well-preserved as the one in Jerash Ruins just north of Amman , you can still admire its beauty.

And don’t miss the ancient juniper tree next to it! It’s been there for 450 years!

The Great Temple

The Great Temple is a stunning landmark here with its fallen pillars, flowery sculptures, steps and decayed walls. You can wander around and admire everything on this huge site. It’s the biggest ruin in Petra’s archaeological park.

Look for the hexagonal tiles in the yard, the small theatre and the amazing carvings all over the place.

The Byzantine Church

Don’t be fooled by its modest exterior, this Church is amazing inside!

Look down and admire the stunning mosaics that cover the floor edges. They are so intricate; you can see patterns, food, animals, sea creatures, the seasons and deities.

The Blue Chapel

The Blue Chapel is located only a little bit higher on the slope than the Byzantine Church. Even if it’s a modest ruin, the rock columns do have a gorgeous blue colour.

The Temple of Qasr al-Bint

Just a few steps away from The Great Temple, you’ll find the amazing temple of Qasr al-Bint. It has a huge arch that towers over you, 23m high. This temple features a large hall with walls and seats and rooms on the sides.

Visiting Petra Tips

This two day Petra travel guide is the most efficient way to see the archaeological site. To get even more out of your visit to Petra, here are some useful travel tips .

  • During your trip to Petra, start early and beat the crowds. Petra opens at 6 am and you’ll have the best views and photos without the hordes of tourists.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Petra is huge and you’ll be walking a lot on uneven terrain. Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun.
  • You may hire a local guide to Petra or join a tour. They can also show you hidden gems and shortcuts that you might miss otherwise.
  • Bargain with the vendors and don’t buy animal rides. Petra is full of souvenir stalls and camel drivers who will try to sell you their goods and services. Be polite but firm and don’t be afraid to haggle. Also, avoid supporting animal cruelty by not riding horses, donkeys or camels.

Iconic Egypt & Jordan: Cairo, Luxor & Petra

day trips from egypt to petra

Itinerary Details

DELUXE | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Combine the ancient wonders of Egypt and Jordan on one convenient vacation. Start in Cairo, where you’ll visit the pyramids and the city’s medieval landmarks. Then explore the banks of the Nile River outside Luxor to see ancient temples and tombs before connecting to Jordan to float in the Dead Sea, tour Petra, and head on a jeep safari in Wadi Rum.

Iconic Egypt and Jordan

This 12-day Middle Eastern vacation explores Cairo and the temples along the Nile River before connecting to Jordan to see the Dead Sea, Petra, and Wadi Rum. It features deluxe accommodations and private tours.

Your trip to Egypt begins in Cairo, the Egyptian capital and largest city in Africa and the Middle East. Cairo is not only the centre of one of the world’s oldest civilizations, but also the gateway to the wonders of Ancient Egypt. Spend a day exploring the pyramids around Giza, including mighty Cheops Pyramid, known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. You’ll also see the enigmatic Sphinx before returning to the city to tour the Egyptian Museum, the world’s greatest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. The next day, explore medieval Cairo, weaving through the old streets and visiting mosques and marketplaces to get a sense of the city’s transformation over the past 1000-plus years. During your tour, you’ll pass through the old gates of Al Moez Street and visit Ibn Tulun Mosque, the oldest in all of Cairo.

Continue your Egyptian vacation by connecting south to Luxor, your base for exploring the ancient temples on the banks of the Nile River. Start with tours of Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, two of the oldest and largest complexes in all of Egypt, renowned for their elaborate statues, obelisks, and wall carvings. Another day, explore the east and west banks of Luxor, known as the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, to see the tombs of ancient pharaohs Seti I and Tutankhamun, the Colossi of Memnon, and the Temple of Hatshepsut, the only woman to rule Ancient Egypt. Cap off the journey to Egypt with a day trip to the Temple of Denderah to the north of Luxor, one of the best-preserved temples in the nation. Connect back to Cairo for one final night.

Fly on to the Dead Sea to start your trip to Jordan. Spend a morning along the famous salty waters and go for a float before you head to Bethany to see the famous Christian pilgrimage site located where John the Baptist baptized Jesus of Nazareth. Continue to your hotel near Petra for the night and awake early the next morning to explore the famous Red Rose City, one of the most magnificent landmarks on the planet. You’ll wind your way through the Siq and see the famous Treasury as you explore the ancient city. Continue the journey to Wadi Rum, the country’s most famous desert valley and filming location for Lawrence of Arabia and Dune , where you’ll embark on a jeep desert tour. On your final full day in Jordan, you’ll see Mt. Nebo where Moses first gazed upon the Holy land, the churches of Madaba, and the capital Amman, where you’ll spend your final night.

At the end of your Jordan vacation, you’ll connect to the airport for onward travels.

More Details

Full day Pyramids and Sphinx, Egyptian Museum

This morning, depart at 09:00 A.M for your full-day tour to visit the Pyramids, Sphinx, and Egyptian museum.

The pyramids and Sphinx were reckoned by the Greeks to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A single pyramid is built of 2,300,000 blocks, each weighing an average of two and one-half tons. In the face of such immensity, one cannot help but feel the wonder and awe that so many writers and artists have sought to convey over the centuries. The Cheops Pyramid is especially interesting since its interior burial chambers are open for inspection by the public. Not far from the Pyramids is the Great Sphinx of Giza, which dates from the time of Chephren (2620BC). Hewn from natural yellowish limestone and standing 65 feet high and 187 feet long, this unforgettable statue combines the head of a Pharaoh with a lion's body.

The Egyptian Museum is the most important depository of Egyptian antiquities anywhere in the world. It features artifacts from the Pharaonic and Graeco-Roman periods, including the celebrated mummies of ancient Egypt's king and Tut Ankh Amun treasures.

Full day Medieval Cairo

Today you will enjoy a medieval atmosphere while walking through the old gates of Cairo into Al Moez Street with its heritage of mausoleums, mosques, palaces, and schools dating from Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluke, and Ottoman Eras. Cross Al Azhar Street to visit the caravansary-like Wekalet el Ghouri, and the Mamluke Style housed of Zeinab Khatoun. Enjoy a lunch stop at Al Azhar Park amid the minarets of Cairo and the Citadel panorama (lunch for your own account). After lunch visits the Ibn Tulun mosque, being the oldest intact mosque standing in Egypt dating to the ninth century and characterized by its unique spiral minaret copied from the mosque of Samarra. Add to your knowledge of Cairo's old houses with a visit to the Next door Gayer Anderson Museum, one of the famous locations where the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me" was shot.

Cairo to Luxor

This morning you will be transferred to Cairo Airport for your flight to Luxor. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for the next 3 nights. This afternoon, enjoy an unforgettable excursion to Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple where you'll be able to explore the world's oldest temple compound.

Luxor Temple was the center of one of the most important festivals, Opet. Built largely by Amenhotep III and Ramses II, the temple served as a setting for the rituals of the festival, which was held to reconcile the human aspect of the ruler with his divine office. The procession of images of the current royal family began at Karnak and ended at the Luxor Temple.

Karnak Temple was erected in 1928 BC as a small shrine dedicated to Amun, the then god of Thebes. The Temple of Karnak comprises three main temples, smaller enclosed temples, and several outer temples - all constructed over 1300 years. The three main temples of Mut, Monthu, and Amun are enclosed in enormous brick walls, with the temple of Amun at the center. Karnak is now the largest and oldest temple compound on earth.
