The Best Easy Day Trips to Take on the Long Island Rail Road

Coe Hall mansion

The Long Island Rail Road may be best known for the day-to-day drudgery of transporting thousands of commuters to and from their 9-to-5 (plus a few unruly, inebriated passengers). But the LIRR’s 700+ miles of track across a far-reaching sandbar aren't there just for all work and no play. The extensive rail system also connects to some of the greatest (and close-to-NYC) excursions the Island has to offer, from beachfront vistas to charming small towns. And when you're visiting the myriad wineries, breweries, and cocktail bars available, it’s also one hell of a designated driver. So think outside the five boroughs and let the LIRR pilot your next day trip.

Belmont Park

Belmont Park in Elmont

LIRR stop : Belmont Travel time from Penn Station : 35 minutes Price one-way : $8 It’s home to the grand finale of horse racing’s prestigious Triple Crown, but the race track at Belmont isn’t only worth visiting for the Belmont Stakes. In fact, it’s a much less crowded and laid-back day out during any other race day of the year, from May-July and September-October. Just be sure to check the race schedule before you plan (trains only run on race days), and bring a cooler of beer, a picnic lunch, and a blanket to spread out on the trackside lawn (oversized Kentucky Derby-style hats are optional, but encouraged). If you’re feeling especially confident, you can even try your luck at selecting a winning horse.

Parlay Rockville Centre

Rockville Centre

LIRR stop : Rockville Centre, Babylon Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 42 minutes Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak What was once a sleepy village is now a vibrant, youthful Downtown community. Somewhere between the feeling of a charming small town and an exciting city, Rockville Centre offers a huge number of restaurants, bars, and local shops, all within a short walk of the train station. Start the day off with your caffeine of choice at Kookaburra Coffee on N. Village Ave, a local institution with baristas skilled in both espresso drinks and latte art. For food, the possibilities are endless. Interested in a gastropub with a great tap selection? Stop by Parlay for burgers or Croxley's  for wings. If house-smoked barbecue sounds better, check out The Smokin’ Rib . If you’re staying into the night, make sure to channel the Jazz Age, Gatsby-style at the new speakeasy Cork and Kerry . Unlike similar gin joints in the city, you won’t have wait hours outside just to get in the door and receive the side-eye from pretentious staff.

Surf2Live Surf School

LIRR stop : Long Beach, Long Beach Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 57 minutes Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak Not many beaches on Long Island are a short walk from the train, which is why Long Beach is such an asset. Add in the fact that there are plenty of neighboring restaurants and bars to enjoy after a day in the sun, and you’ll find one of the most lively beach communities on the Island. For those who get bored lying in the sand all day, Long Beach is also a fantastic place to learn to surf.  Surf2Live offers lessons for all levels of learners (plus, the waves on this stretch of sand tend to be kind to beginners). After working up an appetite, it’s worth the walk over to W. Beech St for dinner at Lost & Found . Chef Alexis Trolf prepares unexpected dishes like venison tartare or puffer fish while chatting with guests from his open kitchen.

Bethpage State Park Golf

Farmingdale

LIRR stop : Farmingdale, Ronkonkoma Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 54 minutes Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak Another example of Long Island’s many engaging Main Streets, the tiny, yet entertaining, Downtown of Farmingdale is home to several notable eating and drinking destinations. The Rolling Spring Roll may be the best spot on LI for Vietnamese pho -- the massive, steaming bowls of noodle soup that will surely cure whatever ails you. A few doors down, Lithology Brewing Company is one of the newest additions to the craft beer scene, and serves up samples in its tasting room daily. For a literary lunch, the Library Café  takes a storybook setting (the former public library) and fills it with a pub-like menu and an extensive cocktail assortment. As a bonus for avid golfers, Farmingdale is also home to the Island’s most famous pro course, Bethpage Black . If you’re looking to spend the morning playing the same course as the PGA greats, tee times can be reserved in advance, and the course is only a five-minute cab ride from the LIRR station.

Planting Fields Arboretum

Planting Fields Arboretum

LIRR stop : Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 1 hour, 21 minutes, plus a five-minute cab ride Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak A former Gold Coast estate, this 409-acre site offers a glimpse into Long Island’s golden age. Planting Fields is home to Coe Hall, a Tudor Revival mansion, surrounded by all of its formal gardens, extensive hiking trails, and greenhouses filled with a huge variety of flora. Tours of the lavish, turn-of-the-century estate, as well as of most of the various gardens, are available for five dollars. Wandering through the stately hedgerows among countless species of flowers and plants feels worlds away from the smog and traffic of city life. It’s like hitting a reset button for the afternoon.

Roanoke Vinyards

LIRR stop : Mattituck, Ronkonkoma Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 2 hours, 26 minutes Price one-way : $28.25 peak, $20.50 off-peak North Fork charm abounds in Mattituck, where cute, well-curated shops line Love Lane (yes, that’s a real street name). Lombardi's Love Lane Market and The Village Cheese Shop both stock delicious specialty food and tasty local finds in beautiful surroundings, only a block from the train. Love Lane Kitchen is also a village institution; locals and day-trippers alike flock to this neighborly cafe for breakfast served late into the day. If you only have time for a quick wine tasting, Roanoke Vineyards has a convenient wine bar right in the center of Downtown. But if you want to explore LI’s wine country more in depth, East End Bike Tours on Main Rd offers a wide variety of peddling adventures to some of the North Fork’s favorite vineyards, many of which include picnic excursions and plenty of wine tastings.

Dan Flavin

Bridgehampton

LIRR stop : Bridgehampton, Montauk Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 2 hours, 33 minutes Price one-way : $28.25 peak, $20.50 off-peak Let go of any preconceived notions about the Hamptons’ elitist attitude and stuffy all-white parties, because if you’re a fan of contemporary art, Bridgehampton is well worth a visit. The Dan Flavin Institute , as part of the Dia Art Foundation, displays the illuminating work of this innovative contemporary artist known for his talent with light. Many of Flavin’s fluorescent light sculptures are housed here, in what was once a fire station. The colorful arrangements create a glowing environment that as much transforms the white walls in the room as it will transform the way you look at light. Afterwards, continue the art excursion into Downtown, where several galleries display intriguing local works. Finish your wandering with a visit to Round Swap Farm 's store front on School St. The local produce, jams, and baked goods here are a product of nine generations of family farming, truly an art form in and of itself.

An Eclectic Escape from New York

An Eclectic Escape from New York

April 2, 2021 by Robert Schrader Leave a Comment

I have to admit: I’m a bit surprised how common it is for travelers to search about a Long Island day trip. New York City ‘s biggest (or, rather, longest) neighbor doesn’t have a great reputation, at least not among tourists.

This is deeply unfair, of course. What Long Island lacks in NYC’s glitz, glamour and high-rise buildings, it makes up for it natural beauty. This is to say nothing about how much cheaper it is to enjoy the restaurants, beaches and other attractions on offer in Long Island.

Irrespective of what your opinions about Long Island were before you arrived at this site, I have a feeling you’ll be excited about the place’s potential as a day trip destination by the time you finish reading.

Why Long Island is the Perfect Day Trip Destination

New York is one of the most amazing cities in the world, but it’s also full-on. The city that never sleeps is also the city that never breathes or takes a break! Traveling here can be invigorating and exhilarating; it can also be downright exhausting, particularly if you come from a city in the US or abroad that’s not as high-octane as New York. (This is pretty likely, given that only a few other cities in the world are even in the same league as NYC!)

Of course, there’s also the appeal of Long Island itself. While I don’t imagine that most people will be browsing Long Island houses for sale and plotting a move here, it is conceivable that you’ll want to stay overnight—more on that in a second. From cuisine, to culture, to surprisingly great beaches, Long Island ends up impressing most people who visit, even those who never thought they’d love the place.

What to Do on Your Long Island Day Trip

Take a great gatsby tour.

Most people associate F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby with New York City, but in fact, it was on Long Island where many of the excesses portrayed in the book occurred. This makes sense, of course, given the propensity of modern NYC’s high society to party in The Hamptons (which, in case you weren’t aware, are on Long Island). Famous places along the “Gatsby Gold Coast” include Oheka Castle , the Vanderbilt Museum and Old Westbury Gardens .

Hit the beach

Many people don’t realize what incredible beaches the New York area has, which makes sense on one level (NYC is the ultimate concrete jungle) but is also shocking, given that the city is composed of islands, long and otherwise. Popular Long Island beaches include Jones Beach State Park and Montauk Point State Park . Fire Island is also very popular among the LGBTQ+ community when taking a Long Island day trip, although all are welcome on its sandy shores.

Have a farm day

If you’ve ever watched the Food Network’s iconic “Barefoot Contessa” program, you’ve probably fantasized about cooking with Ina Garten in her Long Island farmhouse. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to visit the legendary chef or visit her studio on a day trip from NYC, you can definitely have the farm experience. Sample Italian wines at Pellegrini Vineyards , or visit Lavender by the Bay to feel like you’re walking through the fields of Provence (or Hokkaido ).

Enjoy a different shopping scene

Who says Fifth Avenue and Times Square are the only places in the NYC area to shop? Trade the name brands of high street for unique boutiques on Long Island. If you’re on the hunt for unique souvenirs, consider a trip to Kline’s , which is just steps from the sea in Ocean Beach. Want to take some unique furnishings back home with you? Good Westhampton (which, as its name suggests, is located in Westhampton) offers design, decor and more.

Discover understated culture

The bad news? You won’t find an art museum with the scale or range of work you see inside MoMA anywhere on Long Island. The good news? Long Island knows what it is—and it doesn’t pretend to be anywhere else. Art lovers will enjoy the understated offerings on display at the Parrish Art Museum in Watermill. Want to explore history instead? Consider a trip to the African-American Museum of Nassau County .

Should You Stay the Night on Long Island?

On one hand, Long Island beckons you to stay overnight. Hotels here, both beachside and in Long Island City itself , tend to be much more affordable than where you’re probably staying in New York City. This is to say nothing about the fact that your room in Jones Beach will almost certainly be larger than your one on the Upper West Side, or in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Travel, so often, is less about raw price and more about value.

On the other hand, while both the hotels on Long Island and the general ambiance here are conducive to an overnight stay, this isn’t always possible in real life. I sort of think of this as analogous to one of my other favorite megacities in the world: Tokyo. Specifically, while I love traveling up into the mountains and visiting the enchanting Tosho-gu shrine of Nikko , I’ve never really felt compelled to stay overnight there.

Other FAQ About Taking a Long Island Day Trip

How do you get to long island from manhattan.

If you don’t have a car (and let’s face it: You probably won’t if you’re staying in Manhattan or Brooklyn as a tourist), the best way to get to Long Island from downtown New York is by train or bus. In particular, you will want to start your trip at Grand Central Station; buy a ticket for Ronkonkoma, which is the central transit hub of Long Island.

How much is a train ticket from Long Island to NYC?

Depending on which train service you take and whether or not you can score a deal (for example, by booking online and in advance), you can expect to pay between $12-20 for a one-way train ticket between Long Island and NYC. As far as travel time, you will likely spend about two hours in transit, although this depends somewhat on traffic and other factors.

What can you do for free on Long Island?

Many of the Long Island activities I’ve listed in this post are free, in particular the beaches, or walks around various town centers. Do keep in mind, however, that while enjoying Long Island is often free (or, at the least, very affordable), you shouldn’t shy away from spending where necessary, in particular on delicious seafood meals.

The Bottom Line

What do you imagine your Long Island day trip looking like? For some travelers escaping the hustle and bustle of NYC, an excursion here is simply an opportunity to hit the beaches. For other travelers, it’s an opportunity to enjoy delicious cuisine and unique New York-area culture without the stress and pressure of traveling in the city. I’ve spoken with many travelers who end up turning what was supposed to be a day excursion into an overnight or weekend trip! Of course, even if you ultimately end up preferring the streets of Manhattan to the sand of Montauk Point State Park , one thing is for certain: Long Island will defy most expectations set for it.

Your Brooklyn Guide

Guide to the Perfect Day Trip to the Hamptons from NYC (Without a Car)

' src=

One of the best escapes from the city is doing a day trip to the Hamptons! This popular getaway for city folks is especially famous in the summer months when its prime beach weather as Long Island offers some of the best beaches on the East Coast and have attracted some of the most elite CEOs and celebrities who have their vacation mansions on this thin strip of land just outside of NYC.

This guide to Hamptons day trips can be used by anyone, but we made it convenient even for those who do not have a car by offering a selection of day trips to the Hamptons that is accessible via train and bus from the city.

While having a car in the city is rare, if you do have one, you have a little more flexibility with stops and places you can visit. However, if you plan on going to the beach in the summer, you must be aware that there are often very competitive and pricey parking fees for almost all the beaches in the area. By taking a Hamptons day trip from Manhattan or anywhere in NYC via train and/or bus (Hampton Jitney) you don’t have to worry about parking! YAY!

Another few things to consider, the Hamptons do offer a different experience each season, but summer is the most popular time to take a day trip to the Hamptons because of the beaches. You will want to plan your trip around peak times, the weekends are hectic getting out of the city, so if you have flexibility, a weekday requires a little less planning ahead of time. If you want to go on the weekend, just plan ahead and be sure to get your tickets in advance and arrive early.

Last, if you do end up taking a day trip to Montauk since this is the furthest point on the Hamptons and it’s the longest commute, you may want to look into spending the night if you don’t want to feel rushed. Plan for a 2-3.5 hour commute depending on where you want to take your Hamptons day trip.

This is also one of the most popular weekend trips from NYC too! So whether you’re planning a day trip to the Hamptons to enjoy some of the best New York beaches or you’re planning a staycation, this guide will help you plan your visit.

Getting to the Hamptons

All of these day trips to the Hamptons are places where the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) stop in Long Island meaning these are the most easily accessible places from NYC to the Hamptons to visit for a day trip. The LIRR stations in the city you’ll be using are either Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan or Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn.

There are also some options for Hamptons day trips to use the Hampton Jitney, which is a bus service that is more comfortable than your average commuter bus with wifi and bathrooms onboard. You will want to check their current schedule of routes to plan your route/tickets and day trip to the Hamptons.

The furthest trip is going to be NYC to Montauk as this is the furthest tip of Long Island and will take anywhere from 3-4 hours depending on your route. Check the Jitney schedules for the most accurate departures.

If you have a car or can rent a car, you will have the most flexibility with your day trip and you won’t be as limited to stay within the distance of the train or Jitney station. You will just want to plan around peak traffic times so you don’t spend your entire day trip to the Hamptons in the car sitting in gridlock traffic!

Southampton is one of the most ‘elite’ places in the Hamptons and home to “Billionaire’s Lane.” If you want to hang spend a day in the life of the 1%, this is a great day trip to the Hamptons from Manhattan and NYC.

The best part of taking the LIRR to Southampton is it drops you off less than a 10-minute walk to the famous Tate’s Bakeshop where you can pick up their world-famous, thin cookies and other tasty baked goodies along with a coffee at their cafe.

The village of Southampton is about a .5 mile walk from the LIRR stop, so depending on your time and what you want to fit in on this Hamptons day trip you can easily walk it or grab a rideshare like Uber or Lyft to get there quickly. Day Trip to Montauk

View of Montauk Point Lighthouse from Camp Hero State Park Bluffs in the Hamptons New York

One of my favorite day trips to the Hamptons from the city is Montauk. I will warn you, this is the eastern most point of Long Island and the furthest away, so if you do plan on enjoying a day trip to Montauk you will want to plan wisely as you will have the least amount of time at the destination since this will be the longest commute. This is one you really might want to consider doing an overnight trip to because there is so much to do here!

For starters, you’ll want to get a Lyft or Uber ride to Montauk Point Lighthouse, aka End of the World. You can tour the gorgeous light station and property set amount dramatic cliffs after you can walk around the beaches below the lighthouse or head to Camp Hero State Park for more breathtaking coastal views from afar.

Head to the village of Montauk for food options or to grab a beer at Montauk Brewing Co., or grab a ride to the famous surf beach at Ditch Plains. This is one of those beaches that’s hard to get parking at so it’s perfect for day trippers who can get dropped off and picked up.

LIRR to Montauk

You can take the LIRR Montauk Branch to Montauk Station which is located on Fort Pond and right by the famous Surf Lodge. This is the easternmost train stop on the Montauk Branch and the furthest point you can go on your Hamptons day trip. This trip will be the longest since it’s the last station.

Jitney to Montauk

The Jitney has several departures in Manhattan in the am that get you to Montauk using the Montauk line by noonish and then you can leave as late as 7:30 pm returning to Manhattan by 10:30 pm.

Day Trip to Hamptons Tour

Are you longing for a break from the hustle and bustle of New York City? Good news! Nature escapes are closer than you think! While NYC offers its own green spaces, countless adventures are awaiting just a short trip away. From serene forests to breathtaking views, there's a nature preserve perfect for your day trip. Whether you're a hiker, bird-watcher, or simply a nature enthusiast, these top 5 nature preserves are sure to delight and rejuvenate your spirit. So pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to explore the great outdoors just a stone's throw from the city!

The Eugene and Agnes Meyer Nature Preserve

Be on the lookout for rare plants and how glaciers influenced topography throughout the preserve.

Two distinct parcels with exceptional rock formations and vernal pools make up this preserve. In the rugged east parcel, deciduous forest, hemlock stands and mountain laurel thickets crown rocky outcrops, and steep cliffs rim Byram Lake Reservoir. In the western parcel, native grasses and wildflowers blanket meadows that provide excellent habitat for mammals, birds and insects. A number of reptile and amphibian species thrive in the streams and red maple swamps throughout both parcels.

GETTING HERE

From the entrance kiosk, a pair of color-coded trails, complete with distance markers and directional arrows, leads you along the edge of the gorge to numerous landmarks.

There are separate entrances for these two parcels:

  • The Western Parcel trailhead is located on Sarles Street in Mount Kisco; this offers a mowed grass trail that winds through the open meadows, with a spur trail that dips into the forest; this option is less intensive.
  • The Eastern Parcel trailhead is located on Oregon Road in Armonk; this offers a more forested trail system with more ups and downs. The Orange Trail is stunning, with many wildflowers in bloom and a path along the creek. Folks could then loop back using the Red or Blue trail. (Note: the directional signage on the Eastern side is not yet complete, so please keep a map with you to double-check at intersections and keep track of where you are)

Parking : Eastern and western parcel lots for 3 cars each

Public Transport: Amtrak to Croton-Harmon station, then a 30-minute cab to preserve or Metro North to Mount Kisco station, then a 15-minute cab to preserve

Cell Service: Spotty

Mianus River Gorge Preserve

Highlights  .

Look for bobcats, long tailed weasels, wood turtles, eastern gray treefrogs, northern dusky salamanders, white-tailed deer and eastern turkeys.

Protected in 1955, this site is the birthplace of The Nature Conservancy as it was our first land conservation project. Here, the wild Mianus River rushes through a steep gorge on its way to Long Island Sound. On its cool, moist banks, a magnificent cathedral of 350-year-old hemlocks stand more than 100 feet tall, and beyond the river, lush fern gullies surround the lovely Havemeyer Falls. At the Hobby Hill Quarry in the middle of the preserve, 18th-century mining left a gorgeous rock mosaic of mica, feldspar and quartz.

The Nature Conservancy holds title to 555 acres here, while the remaining 183 acres is owned by the Mianus River Gorge Preserve who now manages the entire preserve.

From the entrance kiosk, look for a pair of color-coded trails with distance markers and directional arrows that will lead you along the edge of the gorge to numerous landmarks. There are bathrooms available for use.

Parking: Abundant parking is avialable at trailhead

Public Transport : Amtrak to Croton-Harmon station, then a 30-minute cab to preserve or Metro North to Mount Kisco station, then a 15-minute cab to preserve.

Cell Service:  Spotty

Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary

Observe a variety of hawks, falcons and other raptors during the autumn hawk migration. Other animals here include red fox, coyote, great-horned owls, barred owls and screech owls. The summer brings songbirds such as wood thrush, warblers and scarlet tanagers.

There are six forest communities on the preserve: oak-dominant mixed hardwood, oak-hickory, mixed mesophytic, hemlock-mixed hardwood, hemlock dominant and wetland swamp forest, as well as areas of white pine and Norway spruce plantations.

This land’s rugged outcrops and boulder-strewn hills provide a solid foundation for deciduous forests, flowing streams and swamps teeming with flora and fauna. The Nature Conservancy is helping protect and conserve this natural landscape by studying deer's impact on the forests and managing invasive species to encourage forest regeneration.

Explore all that Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary has to offer in our trail map . There are five main trails and three connector trails totaling 6.5 miles.

The Red Loop, counterclockwise, is a moderately strenuous hike of just under 3 miles with some varying ups and downs. But feel free to cobble together your own adventure by using the map. We advise taking a photo of the map at the trailhead.

Portapotty will be available for us for the season starting May 20.

Parking:  Parking for 10 vehicles. Overflow parking allowed along Lake Bridge

Uplands Farm Sanctuary

True to its name, Uplands Farm Sanctuary in Cold Spring Harbor retains the appearance of an old dairy farm, complete with a silo and open meadows that were once cattle pastures. The preserve offers visitors the chance to enjoy a variety of natural habitats and native species. Nearly 2.5 miles of marked trail meanders from bird and butterfly meadows, through deciduous forests, and into a white pine-shaded ravine.

The vast wildflower meadows provide important habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals, including milkweed, goldenrod, and dozens of butterfly species. Bird species associated with this type of habitat are Eastern bluebird, tree swallow, and blue-winged warbler.

NEW! ADA (wheelchair-accessible) trail now open!

If you’re interested in longer hikes, the West Loop Trail at Uplands Farm connects to the 20-mile Nassau-Suffolk Trail, part of the Long Island Greenbelt where one can hike from Cold Spring Harbor south to Massapequa. Bathrooms are available for use.

Parking:  Parking for 10 vehicles

Public Transport:  LIRR Greenlawn Train Station then cab to preserve.

Butler-Huntington Woods

Butler-Huntington Woods supports many species of birds, snakes and small mammals, including  Eastern towhees, wood peewees, scarlet tanagers and wood thrushes in spring and summer. In winter and fall, keep your eye out for white-throated sparrows and juncos on the ground and chickadees and titmice up in the trees.

The wooded hills and ravines here are part of the Harbor Hill moraine, the hilly ridge that marks the place where the ice sheets paused during the last Ice Age, depositing pulverized materials. The swales between the high ridges cut a natural trail system several miles long through the woodlands. The watershed formed by the glacier-scoured hills and swales once fed water to Mill Creek, which powered a gristmill and flowed on to the Nissequogue River.

Butler-Huntington's entrance is located on Fifty Acre Road, just south of Branglebrink Road, with a dirt parking area. The loop trail is 1.6 miles.

Parking:  Parking for 5 vehicles with 1-2 spaces for roadside parking

Public Transport:  LIRR to St. James Train Station, then cab to preserve

Mohonk Mountain House: New Paltz

Perhaps the grandest of all the mansions and castles in New York (and the U.S.) is Mohonk Mountain House. Founded in 1869, the resort can be found tucked into the Hudson Valley, less than 100 miles from New York City.

Another major draw? It's one of few all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. Rates include three farm-to-table meals daily plus afternoon tea and cookies; a roster of activities, spanning water sports on Lake Mohonk to 85 scenic miles of hiking trails; wellness offerings such as a spa and fitness classes; nightly entertainment including live music and seasonal campfires; and, for families, additional kid-specific activities. Couples can choose Victorian-style guest room or suite accommodations with wood-burning fireplaces in the Mountain House, or opt to stay in the more private Grove Lodge.

While this National Historic Landmark resort is pricey, previous guests agree the cost is well worth the experience.

While the Catskills may always be synonymous with "Dirty Dancing," the region looks a bit different than it did when Frances "Baby" Houseman and Johnny Castle fell in love here. A boom in boutique lodging options is once again attracting travelers to an area that saw a period of decline from the 1970s until recent years.

Modern-day Babys and Johnnys can now go glamping at AutoCamp Catskills; spend the night at Wylder Windham, a full-service boutique hotel next to Windham Mountain Resort; relax in rustic-luxe rooms with soaking tubs at Urban Cowboy Lodge; tuck into cozy cabins at Eastwind Windham, which also features standalone saunas in the woods; or even spend the night at a revamped retro motel such as the Starlite Motel, with its outdoor pool. Throughout the region couples will also find breweries and cideries, U-pick farms, and (of course) the outdoor adventures that first put the Catskills on the map: skiing, hiking, biking and more.

The Niagara Falls illuminated at night.

Courtesy of Niagara Falls USA

Known as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is the original romantic getaway in New York. Couples in search of romance have been visiting the region since the 1800s, particularly after the Erie Canal opened. Connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River, the canal – along with railroad expansions – made Niagara Falls a more accessible vacation destination for honeymooners.

Today, couples who want to experience the beauty of this natural wonder can hike or bike scenic trails at Niagara Falls State Park. You and your sweetheart can also watch a nightly illumination of the falls from a cozy blanket in the park, which is an especially colorful spectacle during Pride Month. Of course, there are plenty of guided tours in Niagara Falls , including the iconic Maid of the Mist (where Pam and Jim said their vows).

The New York side of Niagara Falls is home to a large wine region, with the Niagara Wine Trail offering more than a dozen wineries. For romantic accommodations, look to The Giacomo in the heart of downtown. Built in 1929 as the United Office Building, The Giacomo is now a luxury boutique hotel with architecture that blends art deco and Mayan Revival styles. In-room amenities include a nightly cookie delivery and panoramic views; select rooms have whirlpool baths and fireplaces. Duos can grab cocktails at the Giacomo Lounge before taking advantage of the "Sweetheart Package," complete with a bottle of Champagne, souvenir glasses, chocolate truffles and a rose petal display.

While the Hamptons remains an elite vacation spot on Long Island, the North Fork has been giving that resort destination a run for its money – especially in recent years. Thanks to an ideal terroir for growing grapes, Long Island has an established wine scene, with most of the vineyards and wineries located on the North Fork. You'll find many of the region's wineries along Route 25 (the main thoroughfare); guided wine tours with a personal driver are a popular way to taste the region's signature wines, which include merlot, cabernet franc and chardonnay. In June, many of the wineries celebrate Pride Month.

The area is also dotted with U-pick farms and farmers markets, some of which sell another local delicacy: oysters. For an essential North Fork experience, pair your oysters with wine at places such as Terra Vite North Fork Winery & Vineyard and Peconic Bay Vineyards – the latter offers oyster happy hours seasonally.

Couples can relax by the seaside in Orient Beach State Park, where beachgoers enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, fishing and other opportunities for outdoor recreation. Round out your romantic getaway in Long Island with a game of golf and some upscale dining, then check into one of the North Fork's boutique hotels or bed-and-breakfasts .

Often considered New York City's sixth borough, Westchester County is perfect for a weekend getaway with your partner. Just north of Manhattan, set between the Hudson River and Long Island Sound, Westchester County offers a little bit of everything: quaint river towns (including the legendary Sleepy Hollow), beaches, historic landmarks, seasonal events, and hiking and biking trails galore. You can also traverse the Westchester Farm Trail, which encompasses 13 farms and orchards with markets, U-pick options and more.

Romantic accommodations in Westchester County include the Bedford Post Inn, a Relais & Châteaux property with just eight rooms (many with fireplaces) and two highly rated farm-to-table restaurants. The Abbey Inn and Spa, which overlooks the Hudson River, is another lovely lodging option: Once a convent, the stunning building now houses luxurious guest rooms and suites, a restaurant, and a full-service spa where you and your lover can unwind with a lava stone couples massage.

Whiteface Lodge: Lake Placid

It doesn't get more romantic than Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid. The AAA Four Diamond resort boasts a variety of rustic-luxe suites (including one-bedroom options), most with cast-iron fireplaces, jetted tubs, and patios or balconies. Romantic on-site amenities and activities include evening drinks under the stars in a private lean-to; a spa with hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas; ice skating in the winter; and fine dining at Kanu, where guests say the atmosphere alone is worth a dinner reservation.

A two-time host of the Winter Olympics, Lake Placid offers a variety of Olympics-inspired museums and experiences, with unique winter activities including bobsledding at Mount Van Hoevenberg and dog-sledding on frozen Mirror Lake. Of course, there's also skiing, snowboarding and the like at Whiteface Mountain, one of the best ski resorts in New York . While you're visiting, take time for a romantic stroll along Lake Placid's Main Street, which looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. Previous guests adore Whiteface Lodge, noting that it's ideal for both couples and families.

The Sagamore Resort: Bolton Landing

There are plenty of vacation rentals on Lake George, but if you're looking for the ultimate escape with your partner, book a stay at The Sagamore Resort (part of the Opal Collection). Located on a 70-acre private island in the Adirondacks, the hotel features award-winning dining, an 18-hole golf course, a full-service spa, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Especially unique is the annual Glacier Ice Bar & Lounge, where 18,000 pounds of crystal-clear ice are transformed to create an Antarctic setting overlooking Lake George.

If you're seeking a private outdoor space and/or fireplace, a spacious option is a two-bedroom condo (or perhaps a four-room condo or house if you're traveling with other couples). Otherwise, you'll be perfectly comfortable in a lodge room or suite, some of which also come with fireplaces or balconies. Previous guests say this historic resort – first opened in 1883 and even considered by some to be a haunted hotel – is absolutely majestic.

Troutbeck: Amenia

Tuck into Troutbeck, a historic estate hotel whose most famous guests include Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Located in the Hudson Valley, the hotel features field-to-fork dining led by Michelin-starred chef Gabe McMackin, as well as The Barns, a wellness facility featuring yoga, meditation and Kinesoma classes (dance-based movement). The wellness offerings also include services such as acupuncture and massages. An outdoor swimming pool and grill, hammock and picnic sites, tennis courts, and free bike rentals complement the serene setting.

For an especially romantic lodging option, book the Dunham Suite, named for its lovely view of the nearby creek. The suite features a king-size, four-poster bed; a gas fireplace; a wet bar with a minifridge; heated bathroom flooring; and a standalone soaking tub and separate rain shower. Recent guests say they enjoyed the beauty and history of this hotel from the 1700s.

Police search on Long Island expands to area where body was found in unsolved murder from 1990s

An unsolved murder there from 1993 has been linked to Manorville carpenter John Bittrolff, who was convicted in 2016 of killing sex workers Rita Tangredi and Colleen McNamee. Bittrolff's name has at times been mentioned in connection to the Gilgo case.

By Greg Cergol and Jennifer Millman • Published April 26, 2024 • Updated on April 26, 2024 at 5:44 pm

As police K-9 units scoured a heavily wooded area on Long Island for the fourth day in connection to the Gilgo Beach serial killings, a law enforcement source said state police teams focused their attention on an area near where a body was found more than 30 years ago in an unsolved murder.

Police have not officially explained why teams had been combing through woods in Manorville for days, though a source previously said the search was in connection with the Gilgo Beach murder investigation. That search expanded on Friday to the Southampton community of North Sea, about 30 miles away, according to a law enforcement source.

Prosecutors wouldn’t say if the North Sea search was connected to the one going on in Manorville.

State and local law enforcement officers descended on Manorville starting Tuesday. An NYPD officer at the scene previously told NBC New York the search area was focused at Schultz Road and North Street. The officer said an NYPD K-9 unit was on the scene, on Wading River Road near the Long Island Expressway. Dogs were set to search what the officer described as a "large, wooded area." The officer didn't say what they thought they might find, nor was it known if anything was found.

Suffolk County Police confirmed its officers were assisting, along with members of the NYPD and the New York State Police. It said the department does not comment on active investigations, however.

According to an NYPD spokesman, Suffolk County law enforcement officials asked for the help because of the size of the area they wanted to search. But neither Suffolk police nor the county district attorney would confirm that it was part of the Gilgo murder investigation.

Manorville was home to the site where two sets of remains of young women, among others, were found during a parallel search along Gilgo Beach's Ocean Parkway. Those two women, Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack, had remains dumped in both locations. They were found, in Mack's case, about 11 years apart.

Remains of a toddler and man were also among those found. Those cases are unsolved.

Authorities have said the cases involve at least two separate killers. Manorville had been a notorious dumping ground, appreciated for the privacy of its heavy woodlands. One man, a New York City architect from Long Island named Rex Heuermann, has been charged with murder in the cases of four women whose bodies were found on Ocean Parkway.

Mack was not among them. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyer has focused on other potential suspects, including former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke, who was arrested in a sex sting last year. He also blocked federal investigators from taking part in the Gilgo murder investigation during his time in office.

Police have said there’s an ongoing investigation to see if Heuermann is linked to six other Gilgo victims.

Teams from Syosset High School and Ward Melville High School in East Setauket will compete at the national level this month after taking the top spots at the New York State Science Olympiad.

Syosset’s team won first place for the second consecutive year, and Ward Melville was the runner up out of 59 teams in the annual tournament, which was held in the spring at Le Moyne College in Syracuse.

The teams are now among 120 nationwide invited to compete at the Science Olympiad National Tournament in Michigan on May 24-25.

“Syosset has done an amazing job in the last two years,” said coach Mildred Castaneda. “I am honored to be a part of it.”

The state Olympiad challenged teams of up to 15 students to demonstrate knowledge in 23 categories ranging from astronomy to forensics. Students participated in knowledge-based events that required them to take a test or analyze data, hands-on events that required them to perform experiments or interact with physical objects, or engineering-based events that required them to construct devices following specific parameters.

To reach the state level, Syosset and Ward Melville were among the top-placing teams this past winter in the Nassau East, Nassau West and Eastern Long Island tournaments, which were among 13 high school regionals held statewide. The first-place teams in those three regionals were from Syosset, Great Neck South and Ward Melville high schools, respectively.

Other local high school teams that reached the state level were from Chaminade in Mineola; Half Hollow Hills East in Dix Hills; Hauppauge; Hicksville; Jericho; Division Avenue and General Douglas MacArthur in Levittown; Manhasset; Earl L. Vandermeulen and Paul D. Schreiber in Port Jefferson; Roslyn; Smithtown East; Smithtown West; The Stony Brook School; and West Babylon.

GLEN HEAD/ LYNBROOK

Distinguished diamond club.

The Key Clubs at Lynbrook High School and North Shore High School in Glen Head were among four statewide recently recognized as Distinguished Diamond-level clubs, the highest achievement possible.

The groups, which were honored by the New York District Key Club, were selected for their community service efforts during the 2023-24 service year. North Shore’s efforts, for example, included members volunteering more than 965 hours for the NOSH food pantry in Glen Cove and raising more than $4,600 for charities.

“The Key Club is very grateful we were able to receive recognition for the work the entire club has accomplished,” said North Shore’s club adviser, Julia Salat.

MOUNT SINAI

New principal.

Christopher Elsesser has been appointed principal of Mount Sinai Middle School, effective July 1. He will replace Elizabeth Hine, who is retiring.

Elsesser, a 2002 graduate of Mount Sinai High School, is an assistant principal at Smithtown High School West. Before that, his educational experience includes working as a high school business education teacher in Smithtown.

“I hope to use a combination of my professional knowledge and personal experiences as an alumnus to inspire every student to live their dreams and uphold the proud tradition of Mustang pride,” said Elsesser, referring to the school’s mascot.

WESTHAMPTON BEACH

Book collection.

Westhampton Beach High School sophomore Ava Failla recently spearheaded a collection of more than 1,300 books for Book Fairies of Long Island, a nonprofit that distributes books to low-income communities on Long Island.

To collect the books, Failla approached the principals of the Quogue and Westhampton Beach elementary schools and received approval to set up donation boxes in the school lobbies.

“Growing up, I had a lot of nice books and I wanted to help make a difference and provide books to underprivileged children,” said Failla.
