Spotlight on Silsden

by Laura Storey

A QUAINT TOWN WITH A COLOURFUL PAST, SILSDEN’S HISTORY INCLUDES DRUNK VICARS, RIOTOUS BEHAVIOUR AND ONE-WAY TRIPS TO AUSTRALIA AT THE ORDER OF JUDGES. BUT THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO THIS SMALL TOWN THAN CRIME AND PUNISHMENT...

An industrial town, the Silsden stretch of the Leeds & Liverpool canal began construction in 1769, resulting in workers from all over the world arriving to help with construction, it was likely this small Yorkshire town was not prepared for the arrival of dozens of young men and, according to the Silsden History Group, at least one hostelry was closed down due to “riotous” behaviour. More trouble occurred in April 1911 and led to police officers cowering under their desks when several hundred locals attacked the police station in protest at the arrest of a popular young man.

The town wasn’t nicknamed Cobbydale for no reason, hearty and lively, Silsden has a past rich in the chartist movement, with its nail makers amongst the first to demand rights for the working class.

Today, Silsden is a small, pretty town with both the River Aire and the Leeds & Liverpool canal running through it. Hints of its industrial past are still very much present, with old mills still standing, yet now more likely to be used for apartments. Many businesses in Silsden have been in the same family for generations, Jackson’s of Silsden was founded by Thomas Jackson in 1904 and is now owned and operated by the third and fourth generation of his family, offering carriage masters, funeral services, coaches, and even school buses to their local community.

Silsden has a lot to offer for those who prefer destinations off the beaten track

Whilst in the past, the canal transported vast amounts of produce, nowadays they are cruised by holidaymakers in rented houseboats. A well-known route for those who take their holidays on the canals, many visitors will only catch a fleeting glimpse of Silsden as they drive by to Skipton or Haworth.

However, there’s no need to travel far for local amenities, with local businesses such as Silsden Laundry, a laundrette and dry-cleaning service, ideal for busy folks and J S Pressure Washing Services, perfect for creating envious neighbours when they see your sparkling clean driveway, both located in Silsden. For those of you who are in need of an eye test or swanky new glasses then Silsden Opticians, based in the town’s thriving centre is the perfect place to stop off for a quick eye test or brand new look.

Less of a tourist trap than Skipton and Haworth, Silsden has a lot to offer for those who prefer destinations off the beaten track, with plenty of pubs, independent shops and cafes.

Take a look in Whitakers Hardware on the corner of Bridge Street and Briggate to ramp up that home DIY project or for gift ideas. The independent hardware store sells everything you need to make your home beautiful.

After a shopping spree, that’s lots of other activities Silsden has to offer. Yorkshire often attracts people seeking adventure, with the rolling hills and endless views enticing locals and visitors alike to grab their walking boots and get out in the outdoors. The Yorkshire Dales is only a short drive away from the town, but there’s beautiful countryside within walking distance too, as well as some interesting landmarks.

Just outside of Silsden lie the Doubler Stones, a pair of toadstool shaped stones at the crest of the hill. The Doubler Stones are unusual landmarks. If you make it up the steep hill and observe them up close you may see what some believe to be prehistoric markings on the rocks. Once you’ve taken a look at the stones, take a breather and have a look at the view. On a clear day you can see as far as Pendle Hill.

Silsden Town Hall is still very much the heart of the community and the intimate venue hosts live music throughout the year.

The Doubler Stones aren’t the only stones of interest at Silsden, however, head towards Riddlesden and you’ll discover a poem by Simon Armitage carved into two standing rocks as part of Ilkley Literature Festival.

Treasure hunters may well find what they’re searching for in Silsden too. In 1998, a hoard of coins was discovered by Jeff Walbank who was using a metal detector in a field. He discovered 27 gold coins dating from the 1st century. It is thought they were buried by English refugees fleeing the Romans. Just remember to ask landowner’s permission before digging up a farmer’s field in search of a treasure chest.

If after all that exploring you’ve worked up an appetite, there’s plenty of choice for food. The Old Post Office Café Bar has plenty of choice for lunch from soups to paninis as well as luscious deserts if you fancy a treat. The bar is a nod to the café’s past as Silsden’s post office, with the old counter repurposed with beer pumps, perfect for an afternoon pint. If you arrive later in the evening on a Friday or Saturday, the cafe bar also offers pizza and Prosecco in its intimate surroundings.

Grab a delicious dinner from Isherwoods Butchers, with the beef and lamb grown on Isherwoods farm only one mile from the shop, check out their weekly deals at -isherwoodsbutchers.co.uk. Or pick up a picnic and visit Silsden Park, a beautiful open grass area perfect for lazy afternoons, bring a ball to entertain the kids or get fit with a run, or watch the world go by with fish and chips.

If that sounds a little sedate, a trip to Silsden Town Hall may be in order. The town hall has been the thriving centre of Silsden since 1894. In the past, villagers were able to borrow books, read the news, go to evening classes, take part in noisy public debates and listen to musical concerts.

Silsden Town Hall is still very much the heart of the community and the intimate venue hosts live music throughout the year. Get tickets to see Voodoo Room on the 23rd of April and rock on to the music of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Cream, or enjoy Laurel Canyon Union with songs from Jackson Browne, Neil Young, the Eagles and more.

Silsden is the perfect location not just for its local community but also the surrounding ones too. A place where you can easily spend an hour or even a lifetime for that matter!

Southern Travel Advisors Spill About The 6 Essentials They Pack For Every Single Trip

There's one item in particular all four experts say that you can't forget.

Getty Images

Whether you check a bag or carry on , there’s only so much real estate that you can fill with items to pack for vacation. (If only we could fit our entire closet and a cabinet of snacks in our suitcases Mary Poppins-style!)

To help you make the most of every inch, we’ve previously revealed the 10 things Southerners always bring on a road trip and 12 items you should pack for every cruise , but how about for flights? We tapped four veteran Southern travel advisors to open up their bags and run down their "items to not forget to pack list" that they share with clients.

Let’s start with the essentials: You can’t pack a bag if you don’t have the bag, and our expert panel agrees that a sturdy rolling bag and a carry-on bag with a trolley sleeve (a band that loops over the roller bag’s handle to allow you to move both bags as one cohesive unit) are an ideal dynamic duo.

“You will never regret giving yourself an extra hand while walking through the airport,” says Mary Helen Law, a Rome, Georgia-based founder of Law Luxury Travel , who has more than six years of experience professionally planning trips in her role as a luxury travel advisor.

From there, you’ll probably want some hand sanitizer , too, since you never know what grime you’re going to run into, as well as any necessary medications.

And don’t forget your I.D.; your driver's license if you’re staying stateside or your passport if you’re going abroad. (Make sure to check that neither is expiring within six months, suggests Jonathan Alder, a Winter Park, Florida-based luxury travel advisor and founder of Jonathan’s Travels . Being too close to the expiration date can potentially lead to challenges at immigration.)

Now that we’ve reviewed the essentials, it’s time to cover the fun—yet still very important—stuff.

  • Jonathan Alder, a Winter Park, Florida-based luxury travel advisor and founder of Jonathan’s Travels who has visited all 7 continents across 72 countries personally, and has planned more than 30,000 client trips to date
  • Mary Helen Law, a Rome, Georgia-based founder of Law Luxury Travel (who has more than six years of experience professionally planning trips in her role as a luxury travel advisor)
  • Emma Major Schroeder, an Atlanta, Georgia-based luxury travel advisor and the owner of Major Traveler
  • Haleigh Scott, a Dallas, Texas-based owner and luxury travel designer with Next Exit Travels

What To Pack for Every Vacation, According to Southern Travel Advisors

Every traveler swears by different items, true. But these six come in handy for pretty much every air traveler, our travel advisor experts agree.

1. Your Chargers

This packing list item was unanimous. All four pros say that a portable phone charger is on them at all times, and they remind clients to toss in any other chargers they'll need. Think slim like Law, who loves a pint-sized charger , or follow the lead of Emma Major Schroeder, an Atlanta, Georgia-based luxury travel advisor and the owner of Major Traveler , and invest in an entire tech kit that corrals all of your plugs and cords in one efficient case.

“These days, everything seems to require a charger, from phones to computers, baby monitors to Kindles, headphones and more,” Schroeder says. “I love having a kit that keeps everything organized in one place.”

If you’re jetting outside of the U.S., check your destination's power source, and pack an international adapter (Adler adores this power bank ) "so you can plug it in at any available power source no matter what country you’re in," Adler says.

2. A Pharmacy Bag

Beyond your daily medications, it’s wise to stock a few basic over-the-counter items, just in case something comes up and you can’t find a pharmacy, Adler suggests.

Consider including:

  • An anti-inflammatory or pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or aspirin
  • A cold medication, like Sudafed, DayQuil/NyQuil, or Zicam
  • A food poisoning medication, such as Pepto-Bismol or Imodium

3. A Bluetooth Audio Transmitter

No matter what class of service you're flying in or what airline you booked with, plane headphones are a pain, confirms Haleigh Scott, a Dallas, Texas-based owner and luxury travel designer with Next Exit Travels .

“A Bluetooth transmitter allows me to connect my own wireless headphones to in-flight entertainment systems or other audio sources that only have a headphone jack,” Scott says. “It’s easy to use and can pair with two sets of headphones simultaneously.”

4. A Comfortable Wrap

Schroeder and Law agree that a versatile travel wrap can come in clutch “to keep warm on planes, feel cozy if trying to take a snooze in the car, and keep you warm on a cool day or night in your destination,”  Schroeder explains.

You can also use this scarf as a head wrap or shoulder covering if you’re entering certain religious facilities around the globe, Law adds.

5. A Reusable Water Bottle

Depending on which experts you ask, about half to three-quarters of Americans are dehydrated at home. Trips, be they for fun or business, often involve active schedules and less convenient access to water taps, so we imagine that statistic is even higher for folks on-the-go.

With that in mind, and to save money while traveling, Schroeder relies on a reusable water bottle.

“This is a must for both convenience and sustainability purposes. Water is so overpriced at the airport. I love having a reusable water bottle that fits in my specific tote bag and allows me to keep up with my water intake during travel,” Schroeder says.

To avoid any potential contamination to the mouthpiece, consider a bottle that keeps that portion completely covered. ( YETI and S’well both have several options, and this LARQ bottle has a cap and can purify the water inside.)

6. An Eye Mask

Another thing that’s challenging on long-haul flights and in another time zone: scoring adequate shut-eye. Since Scott admits that "sleep is my second favorite hobby outside of travel," an eye mask is a must in her travel bag. She recommends that her clients look for one that’s adjustable, soft, and contoured to ensure a comfy fit.

A travel expert who has been to more than 90 countries says these are the best under-the-radar destinations

  • Samantha Brown shared three underrated travel destinations to avoid crowds.
  • Brown has visited over 90 countries in her 20-year career as a seasoned travel host.
  • She said Australia and Canada offer unique experiences.

Insider Today

From Europe and Asia to South America and Australia, Samantha Brown has been to more than 90 countries around the world.

The Emmy-award-winning travel host of the PBS show " Samantha Brown's Places to Love " takes viewers across the globe to share what it's like to experience different cultures.

She's been hosting travel shows on various networks for 25 years, including Travel Channel's "Great Vacation Homes."

In a recent conversation with Business Insider, Brown highlighted three underrated destinations that will wow you without the crowds.

Darwin is an underrated destination in Australia.

destination travel silsden

Darwin is at the top of Australia in the Northern Territory.

"It's closer to Asia than it is to Melbourne or Sydney," Brown said. Singapore is about 300 miles closer than Melbourne, according to Google Maps.

Despite the roughly four-hour flight between Darwin and these more popular Australian destinations, Brown says it's a hidden gem worth visiting because of its unique landscapes in the two bordering national parks, Mary River and Litchfield.

The surrounding national parks may make you feel as if you're on another planet.

destination travel silsden

Brown travels to Darwin to see waterfalls, pools, and unique landscapes at Mary River and Litchfield National Parks.

"You're in this phenomenally different landscape from the Outback. Darwin feels as if you are not only hitting a new country but a new planet," she said. "It's unlike anything you've ever seen. And I think if you've traveled that far, you need to see that."

If you enjoy train travel, board the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide. It is known as one of the most scenic railways in the world , with dramatic landscapes inaccessible by other transportation modes.

If you can't get to Europe, take a trip to Montreal.

destination travel silsden

"If Europe is too expensive, go to Montreal ," Brown said.

The city in Canada's eastern province of Quebec is just a 90-minute flight from NYC.

The French-Canadian city feels like Paris, according to Brown.

destination travel silsden

The French-Canadian city reminds Brown of Paris with historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and French culture.

Most Montreal locals speak French, and with a European aesthetic, it's easy to see why Brown considers it a comparable destination.

"Montreal is one of the best cities in the world," she said. "The 400-year-old city feels like Europe for half the cost."

She's particularly a fan of the public art scene. According to the city's website , more than 1,000 pieces are displayed around Montreal and are free to view.

Brown recommends taking yourself on a free tour. From the streets to the underground metro stations, Montreal is full of art.

"I love public art, and I love places that we are all allowed to inhabit with no money," Brown said.

A great place to start is Place Jacques Cartier , a public square filled with street artists and vendors, as BI previously reported.

Costa Rica may not seem like a hidden gem, but it is during the rainy season.

destination travel silsden

In Central America, Costa Rica is a hot spot for tourists. From beaches and jungles to volcanoes and cloud forests, travelers can have a range of experiences in one trip.

But fewer tourists visit in the summer, as Costa Rica's wet season begins in late May and spans six months.

Many tourists don't know that the rain clears up midseason for July.

destination travel silsden

In the midst of the wet season, rain stops in Costa Rica in July, Brown told BI.

"It happens every year, just for the month of July," she added.

Since many travelers assume Costa Rica is rainy all summer, prices for flights and hotels decrease.

"You can go to the Caribbean side, where all the resorts are, or you can go to the interior, where there are volcanoes and rainforests," Brown said. "You're going to a place that everyone loves to go to. The biodiversity is off the charts. But you're going at a time when no one thinks to go."

For more ideas on where to travel this summer , Brown released the ultimate itinerary in a Summer Travel Trends Report in collaboration with Klarna.
