17 Accredited Drive Through Zoos and Safaris in the U.S.

After years of traveling around the United States, both with my family and without, I have run across many drive through zoos, safari parks, and wildlife preserves. As traditional zoos have transitioned to animal conservation and education over entertainment, there has been a shift to larger, more natural animal habitats and enclosures. The nice thing about drive through safaris and zoos is that most have acres and acres of land for animals to roam in a much more natural setting.

I constantly struggle with the benefits of zoos versus the negative impacts of keeping animals in captivity. Although I know many have different views, I see many benefits of these safari and wildlife parks from seeing the simple joy on a child’s face when they see an animal in person that inspires a lifelong interest in animal preservation, to the important research that these parks provide in understanding animal behavior and saving them from extinction.

That said, I do think we need to be careful about which establishments we support, which is why I have included only the zoos and safari parks that are accredited members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums or the Zoological Association of America .

Drive Through Zoos & Safaris

I have intentionally left out a few safari parks, even ones that I have visited because greater research showed that they weren’t accredited by one of those two widely recognized organizations. (I found this article helpful in understanding the different types of accreditation and what it means.)

As of this writing, this list is only of drive through zoos and safaris that are accredited AZA or ZAA establishments or overseen by government wildlife entities. I have included drive through safaris and wildlife parks where you can either self-drive your own vehicle or take a safari tour or safari ride through the animal habitats.

Get the Most Out of Your Visit to San Diego’s Zoo Safari Park

Originally built as a conservation facility, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park first opened its doors in 1972. Today, it is one of San Diego’s best attractions, welcoming a whopping 2 million people through its doors annually. It’s home to more than 2,600 animals representing over 300 animal species and over 3,500 plant species. It’s also home to the largest veterinary hospital in the world, which is situated adjacent to the park.

Dozens of endangered species have been bred here and reintroduced into the wild. The entrance fees and fees from the extra cost activities help maintain this animal sanctuary and continue its great work. Below I’ve created an in-depth look at both the free and extra cost activities you can enjoy at the Safari Park.

It’s Included: What You Get with the Price of Admission

Before I get into the paid extras at the San Diego Safari Park, I’m going to give you a quick breakdown of what’s included in the price of admission as well as some freebie activities you can enjoy at the park if you know about them ahead of time.

The Africa Tram

Due to its expansive acreage, it can be hard to walk the entire park, especially during the summer when the sun is bearing down on you. So, take the complimentary Africa Tram. It’s the best way to see the entire park, ensuring you don’t miss out on any of the animal habitats. Afterward, you can explore your favorite areas again without feeling rushed. These guided rides begin departing at 10:30 a.m. and last 25 minutes. Boarding takes place at the far side of the Park.

Animal Encounters: Watch Feedings, Ask Questions, and Get Interactive

Tiger keeper talk.

Learn about Sumatran tigers at the Sumatran Longhouse located on Tiger Trail. One of the tigers’ keepers will tell you everything you want to know about these fabulous animals. Talks take place at 11:45 a.m. every day that the park is open.

Animal Ambassador Stage

Get face-to-face with one of the park’s animal ambassadors in the Safari Base Camp. This interactive program lets you get up-close-and-personal with an alligator, cheetah, or other exotic and rare animal. The animal trainers encourage you to ask your burning questions about the species and their habitats. This experience takes place twice daily, one at 9:30 a.m. and one at 2:30 p.m. Other animal encounters take place in the Gorilla Forest at 12:30 p.m. and in the African Outpost at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. daily.

Cheetah Run

Witness the fastest mammal alive light up the racetrack at the Cheetah Run. Situated near the Lion Camp this jaw-dropping experience is included with the price of admission. You’ll sit back and relax as one of the park’s cheetahs takes off down a 330-foot straight track allowing it to really stretch its legs as it reaches top speeds of 70 mph.

Hanging Out in Nairobi Village

This area of the park offers several animal encounters and unique experiences at various times throughout the day including the Petting Kraal, Lorikeet Landing, and Lemur Walk.

Petting Kraal

Let your children meet the park’s littlest residents at the Petting Kraal where they can brush and stroke gentle goats. This takes place twice daily – at 10 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

drive through safari san diego

Lorikeet Landing

Feed colorful rainbow lorikeets at Lorikeet Landing at 10 a.m. or 3:45 p.m. For a small fee you can purchase nectar, and these vibrant birds will land on your hand to get their fill. This experience isn’t recommended for skittish children as it can be a little overwhelming for them.

Have you ever wanted to get up-close-and-personal with a lemur? The Lemur Walk is an immersive experience where you’ll walk along a pathway through this animal’s natural habitat to catch these endearing primates living their best lives. Watch them as they socialize with one another, groom each other, jump around, climb trees, and even sunbathe. This activity has a minimum age requirement of 5 years old.

Learn more about what is included in the price of admission and purchase discounted tickets .

The Butterfly Effect

One of the most anticipated annual events at the park is the Butterfly Walk. From the end of March to the beginning of May thousands of gorgeous butterflies displaying all colors and sizes fill a greenhouse in Nairobi Village. It’s a joy to walk through as these winged creatures flit across the space. You can easily identify each with the handy identification guide provided to you. Priority butterfly viewing is available at an additional cost. You can get tickets at the Priority Ticket booth. You can also purchase a special treat to have these little guys eating out of the palm of your hand.

Tip: Wear bold and bright colors on the Butterfly walk to invite one of the butterflies to perch on your shoulder.

It’s Not Included – But It’s Worth the Additional Cost

While there are a plethora of free activities and encounters that you can experience at the park, there are also a host of extra-cost activities, experiences, and tours to choose from. They range in price from moderate to expensive, but don’t let the price run you off. The proceeds are used to maintain the park and continue to provide the animals with the best care possible.

Conservation Carousel

A perfect attraction for kids and playful adults, the Conservation Carousel is a classic carousel with 60 replicas of wild animals, many you’ll find in the park like giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, and zebras. Hop on your favorite animal and enjoy the ride as you listen to the cheerful music. You get unlimited rides for just $6; this attraction is open from 10 am to closing time.

Balloon Safari

Fly high in the sky with the Balloon Safari experience, this tethered helium balloon launches 400 feet into the air giving you a view typically reserved for out winged friends. Designed to imitate the hot air balloon tours of the Serengeti, you’ll spend 10-12 minutes enjoying aerial views of the various animal habitats. As the price of this activity varies, you’ll have to inquire at the park to find out the cost. The best times to fly are at 9 am and 12 pm.

Visit San Diego Wild Animal Park – A Complete Guide to San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Visit San Diego Wild Animal Park - A Complete Guide to San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Courtesy: sdzsafaripark.org

Ever wondered what it’s like to be up close and personal with a cheetah, or to hear a lion’s roar echo through the night? Well, buckle up, because we’re about to embark on a wild adventure at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (aka the Wild Animal Park). This isn’t your typical zoo visit. It’s an immersive experience that transports you and your family into the heart of diverse ecosystems, where you’ll encounter some of the world’s most exotic creatures. So, let’s dive right in and explore the wild side of San Diego!

A Walk on the Wild Side: The San Diego Zoo Safari Park Experience

Planning your safari adventure, exploring the park: map and major attractions, must-see animals and exhibits, choosing the right safari for you, special exhibits: dinosaurs, birds, and butterflies, preparing for your visit, conservation efforts and educational opportunities, food and amenities, comparing san diego zoo and safari park, amenities and services, staying near san diego zoo safari park, tips and tricks for a great visit, bottom line.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, formerly known as the Wild Animal Park, offers a unique experience that sets it apart from other zoos. Nestled in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego, California, the park has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1972. Originally named the San Diego Wild Animal Park, it was a place where animals from the San Diego Zoo could live in large, open spaces.   Housing over 3,600 animals representing more than 300 species in large habitat areas, the park provides plenty of stimulation for its inhabitants, allowing them to interact with various species they might encounter in a natural environment. This 1,800-acre wildlife preserve and botanical garden offer a lot of adventure, and we’re here to guide you through it.

The park changed its name when it shifted its focus to offer more intimate animal encounters and adventure experiences that mimic going on a mini safari. You can even camp out in the middle of the savanna between the elephants and lions for Roar & Snore! Other experiences include zip-lining over animal enclosures, meeting animals up close in a safari setting, or getting a condor’s-eye view of the park from a giant balloon.

What Makes San Diego Zoo Safari Park Unique?

What sets the San Diego Zoo Safari Park apart is its commitment to conservation and its unique approach to animal exhibits. The park spans an impressive 1,800 acres, designed to mimic natural habitats, giving visitors the opportunity to see animals interact as they would in the wild. The park is also home to the world-renowned Institute for Conservation Research, where scientists conduct research to conserve species and habitats. From the African Plains to the Asian Savanna, every corner of the park offers a new adventure.

Best Time to Visit

While the park is open year-round, the best time to visit is during the cooler months, from September to May. During these months, the animals tend to be more active and the park is less crowded. However, any time is a good time to visit the park, as there are always exciting exhibits and experiences to enjoy.

Tickets and Discounts

Admission to the park includes access to all the exhibits, shows, and the Africa Tram.

As of my last visit, a one-day pass for adults (ages 12 and up) was $69, and a one-day pass for children (ages 3-11) was $59. Children 2 and under are free. Prices may vary, so I recommend checking the park’s official website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

There are also special experiences available for an additional cost, such as the Cheetah Run, Roar & Snore Safari, and Behind-the-Scenes Safari. The park offers discounts for AAA members, military personnel, and San Diego residents. Be sure to check the official website for the most up-to-date information on ticket prices and discounts.

But if you want to head straight to the gate (especially if you are doing any early early safaris, which start before the ticket windows open and you need separate park admission for those) – then you really want to have the tickets ahead of time.

E-ticket from GetYourGuide is the easiest as you just redeem them at the park turnstile.

Directions and Address

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is located at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Rd, Escondido, CA 92027. It’s easily accessible by car and there is ample parking available. If you’re using a GPS, be sure to enter the full address to get accurate directions.

Weather Considerations

San Diego has a mild climate year-round, but it can get hot in the summer months. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated. Most of the park is outdoors, so be prepared for the elements. There are a number of experiences that will get you up close and personal with the animals, and it’s best to book those in advance. You’ll save money reserving in advance rather than purchasing in the park — plus you’ll guarantee your spot. Many of these experiences have age restrictions, so keep those in mind as you search for the right experience for your family.

Understanding the Park Layout

The park is divided into different zones, each representing a different region of the world. The Africa Tram, which is included with admission, offers a guided tour around the African and Asian regions of the park, providing an overview of the different habitats and the animals that live in them.

The park is home to a diverse range of animals, from the majestic African elephants and graceful giraffes to the elusive cheetahs and playful lemurs. Don’t miss the Lion Camp, where you can come face-to-face with African lions, or the Elephant Valley, where you can watch the park’s herd of African elephants. For bird lovers, the park’s Bird House offers a chance to see a variety of exotic birds up close.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is home to a vast array of exhibits and attractions that cater to all ages and interests. From the African Plains, where you can spot rhinos, giraffes, and gazelles, to the Australian Outback, where you can meet the kangaroos and koalas , there’s something for everyone. The park also features a number of interactive exhibits, such as the Lorikeet Landing, where you can feed colorful lorikeets, and the Petting Kraal, where kids can get hands-on with gentle goats.

In addition to its regular exhibits, the park also hosts special exhibits throughout the year. Past exhibits have included Dino Mountain, a prehistoric adventure featuring life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, and the Butterfly Jungle, a seasonal exhibit where visitors can walk among thousands of beautiful butterflies.

Whether you’re going on a safari or hopping around the park, you’ll need to dress for a workout. Wear layers you can shed as the sun warms things up in the afternoon. Hiking shoes or good walking shoes are a necessity for exploring the park, which is very spread out and hilly. Despite all of the walking, the park is very kid-friendly. There are multiple playgrounds, a lot of shady spots, fun photo opportunities for tadpoles, and limitless chances to hop, skip, jump, and climb around the park.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park isn’t just about fun and adventure. It’s also a leading center for wildlife conservation and education. The park is involved in various conservation projects worldwide, working to protect and preserve endangered species. During your visit, you can learn about these efforts through informative displays and educational talks. The park also offers a range of educational programs for kids and adults alike, including summer camps, wildlife sleepovers, and behind-the-scenes tours.

After all that adventure, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Luckily, the park offers a variety of dining options to suit all tastes. From casual cafes to sit-down restaurants, you’ll find a range of delicious meals and snacks to keep you fueled for your safari adventure. The park also has several gift shops where you can pick up souvenirs, as well as amenities such as stroller rentals and wheelchair accessible facilities.

While both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park offer amazing wildlife experiences, they each have their unique features. The Zoo, located in Balboa Park, houses a diverse range of animals in a more traditional zoo setting. The Safari Park, on the other hand, is known for its expansive free-range enclosures and safari experiences. If you’re looking for a more immersive and adventurous wildlife experience, the Safari Park is the way to go.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Spend the night with the animals on a Roar & Snore Safari. Guests sleep in comfortable tent cabins with cots and heaters. Witness the animals' activity after dark and roast s'mores around the campfire. – Sharael Kolberg

If you want more of the San Diego Zoo , head about 35 miles north to its Safari Park in Escondido. Here, you can view some of Africa's most beloved animals – including lions, elephants and cheetahs – roaming free (well, relatively). There are also meerkats, zebras, gorillas and bald eagles, to name a few. True to its name, the park offers a variety of different safaris, including a zip line safari and a wildlife safari in an open-air truck.

Like the zoo, the Safari Park is operated by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and regularly wins high praise from animal lovers, who say the facility offers an excellent way to observe the multitude of creatures. Travelers frequently describe the staff as very friendly and knowledgeable. Visitors acknowledge that it is an inconvenient trek from San Diego, but the unique habitat created for the animals is very fascinating to see. Some travelers even went so far to say that it felt like they were on a real African safari. Many point out that it can get extremely hot here in summer and advise you to plan accordingly.

The park is open daily, usually from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but extended hours at select times throughout the year may be until 7 or 8 p.m. Prices for single-day tickets start at $72 for visitors ages 12 and older and $62 for kids 3 to 11. This covers admission to the park and use of the Africa Tram that travels through it. Individual safari experiences cost extra. Packages combining admission to both the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park or blending visits to the two Wildlife Alliance institutions with a trip to SeaWorld San Diego are also offered. If you're hoping to visit the Safari Park, you'll either need to drive or take a taxi as the city doesn't offer an efficient mode of public transportation between the zoo and park. For additional information, see the park's website .

U.S. News Insider Tip: Leave your car in one of the parking lots and take the free Balboa Park Tram that runs every 10 to 15 minutes to get around. Save money with a Balboa Park Explorer Pass, which offers discounts at park museums. – Sharael Kolberg

Home to the renowned San Diego Zoo , this 1,200-acre park is the city's cultural hub. Located in downtown San Diego (about 1 ½ miles north of the city center), Balboa Park is a great place for a stroll, a bike ride or a picnic. Wander around the park's many gardens while admiring the intricate Spanish-Renaissance architecture that permeates the grounds (the best examples are the California Building and the reconstructed House of Hospitality). The Botanical Building is a great starting point in Balboa Park. The building is one of the most photographed places in Balboa Park and is one of the largest lath structures in the world. But don't just look at it. The famous botanical building features more than 2,100 permanent plants, including striking collections of tropical plants and orchids. Balboa Park also features a cactus garden, a rose garden, a Japanese-style garden as well as a palm tree canyon, among many others.

San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park Now Called Safari Park

The San Diego Wild Animal Park located about 35 miles from its sister San Diego Zoo near Balboa Park in San Diego, changed its name to Safari Park to more accurately reflect its focus on environment.

There are other safari parks in the U.S. and throughout the world, and most are drive-through parks where you can take your car through the exhibit. The generally accepted definition of a safari park is a drive-through park. Wild Animal Park or San Diego's version of a Safari Park does not provide that option, however, so the name change makes the zoo unique in an odd sort of way. During the past several years new rides have been introduced to this animal park such as Segway rentals and zipline rides so you can now do more things during your visit and get closer to the animals by paying more money. Photo safari rides and sleep-overs at the Safari Park in San Diego have been at the zoo much longer and have been extremely popular while providing a great revenue source to help feed the hungry creatures and pay for their expensive medical care.

While the admission fee can sustain you throughout the day, you can also add a-la-carte tours in what nearly amounts to a drive-through, up-close experience that other safari parks have long offered.

One example of a reason you may want to purchase add-ons to your admission is shown in the photo above, a picture of people sitting in a truck looking at a giraffe. The photo was taken from the FREE tram tour that drives around the perimeter of the exhibit and doesn't stop to allow guests to take their best "shot". With a telephoto and quick response, you can get pictures of the people in trucks that are closer to the action. They paid another $90 in addition to admission for that privilege of riding right up to the animals and stopping to take photos. You have to admit that it's a wow! experience and probably worth it for those who can afford the extra expense.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is as close as you'll get to a drive through zoo. There used to be a drive-through safari park in Irvine, California. It was closed several decades ago.

One of the lesser known zoos in California that we actually like as much as San Diego's Safari Park is called Safari West. It is located in Santa Rosa. For around Take a tour in a jeep or enclosed vehicle that stops for photos. Safari West is closer in spirit to the type of place that its Southern California counterpart once was. Definitely check it out if you are visiting the Bay Area.

How to Visit San Diego Zoo and Safari Park in One Day

You want to See San Diego Zoo and Safari Park on the same day? Here’s a 10-point how-to plan, itinerary & maps to help you save time, effort (and your feet!). And also 5 reasons not to do it.

You can see both San Diego Zoo & Safari Park if you’re physically fit, have a plan, and go during extended summer hours. However, most regular attendees say that it’s difficult because both are full-day attractions. They’re 30+ miles apart. It’s a lot to walk. And Escondido weather can be hot.

If you make purchases through the links in this post, I may be compensated. Read my Advertising Disclosure for more info. Thanks! ~ Nancy

Can you visit both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park in one day?

First, let’s go through the reasons why visiting both branches of the San Diego Zoo on the same day is a challenge. Then I’m going to share 10 tips that will make it easier. And I’ve included a detailed itinerary with maps. These will all help you see most of both attractions in 1 day and have a great time doing it.

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t See San Diego Zoo and Safari Park on the Same Day

  • Too many animals and exhibits. Both have so many that it is easy to spend a full day at each attraction. San Diego Zoo Global recommends allotting a minimum of 3 to 4 hours for each . But If you’re fascinated by animals like me, a half-day is not nearly enough.

  • Too far apart . These two attractions are more than 30 miles away from each other. In ideal traffic conditions, it will take 35 to 45 minutes by car to travel between them. The Zoo is near downtown San Diego within Balboa Park. The Safari Park (formerly known as the Wild Animal Park) is in Escondido.
  • It’s physically demanding . There’s a lot of walking at both parks. The Zoo has some steep hills to climb. And the Safari Park is spread out. For instance, to get to the African Tram you have to walk almost half a mile. Granted, most of the route is downhill, but it’s still a significant distance for many people.
  • High Escondido temperatures can reach 90 to 100°F in the summer. Kids may get hot and cranky. Some adults will too.
  • You’ll be rushed. You may want to relax on your vacation, not run around like a crazed meerkat.

Of course, if I’ve persuaded you that doing both animal parks in one day is too much, I’ve written a post on where to stay near Safari Park .

10 Tips for Visiting San Diego Zoo & Safari Park In One Day (Without Regrets)

If you want to see both animal attractions in a day you’ll need both strategy and an itinerary. You’ll find both below:

San Diego Zoo Map app opening screen

  • Don’t try this with kids under 5 years old . They probably will not have the stamina for a long day like this. Besides, once they see the new Wildlife Explorers Basecamp kids zoo they will not want to leave. You may be there for hours.
  • Apple iOS download here.
  • Android download here.
  • Check the Safari Park’s hours on their website HERE before scheduling your adventure. Also find the time Cheetah Run at Safari Park is scheduled. You will need to arrive at Safari Park at least 30 minutes before the cat scampers.
  • Visit the Zoo first. It will help you if you check out my page on which are the top animal exhibits and attractions at the zoo . Then travel to Safari Park. That’s because Cheetah Run at Safari Park usually only takes place once a day in the afternoon (except during Sundown Safari when it’s run again at 7 PM). Be there. Missing Cheetah Run at Safari Park is like visiting San Diego and not eating a fish taco.

  • Uber (https://www.uber.com/us/en/price-estimate/ )
  • Wear comfortable, broken-in walking shoes! This tour is NOT the time to make a fashion statement. Leave the high heels in your luggage or your feet will pummel you with pain.
  • They do not allow glass, alcohol, or straws to be brought in. Large food storage containers like coolers are also forbidden.

  • Use Mechanical Transportation Options. With planning, you can save your feet and conserve your energy at the San Diego Zoo. Ride the buses and other mechanical transport to avoid trudging up the steep hills whenever you can.

Guided Tour Bus photo digitally manipulated with hand drawing highlights.

  • Guided Bus Tours – The double-decked Guided Tours circle through most parts of the zoo. They give you views that you cannot see on foot, particularly those at the Polar Bear exhibit. Catch them near the entrance. Sit on the top deck of the bus. And on the driver’s right hand side if you can. You’ll be able to see more animals because most of them are on that side.
  • Kangaroo Express Shuttle buses have 4 stops. They’ll help you get from point A to B quickly. You’ll see one every 15 minutes. They start their routes at 10:30am. Unlimited Kangaroo Bus rides are included with your admission.
  • Elevator – The bottom is located on Park Way close to Panda Trek. The top is at the Treetops Cafe and Alberts Restaurant.
  • Lost? Ask the red-shirted volunteers. Ask them your questions at either park. San Diego Zoo Global has a large number of well-trained and informed docents. They love to share their knowledge of the parks, the animals, and the plants within them. They also know all the short-cuts.

Same-Day San Diego Zoo and Safari Park Itinerary for 2024

Here’s a route plan that will allow you to quickly see the most popular animals at the Zoo and Safari Park. It maximizes mechanical transport options. This itinerary also allows you to go downhill on a majority of the Zoo’s hilly paths.

The maps on the left side of the illustrations are screenshots of the San Diego Zoo app. Here’s a map key to help you get the most out of them. Pink text on a map indicates my notes and comments.

San Diego Zoo – Here’s the Most Efficient Way to See It

7:30 AM – Eat breakfast outside of the San Diego Zoo. Indulge a bit, but don’t overdo it. You will be moving all day and will burn those calories off. But you don’t want to eat so much that you get sleepy.

8:30 AM Arrive at the Zoo. Getting there a bit early will allow you to find a parking spot close to the entrance. It also gives you time to buy tickets if you haven’t already.

San Diego Zoo Bus Ticket Tips

The Guided Tour Bus and Kangaroo Buses are included with your admission.

At 8:30 AM you’ll be able to enter the gates and wait on Front Street for the opening. Pick up a map from the kiosk or one of the red-shirt volunteers. Take a glance at it so that you can easily recognize the red map markers.

San Diego Zoo Bus, Tour Ticket booth

9:00 AM The zoo opens with squawking. Get your camera ready to capture the flock of colorful macaws flying out of an elevated box to their roost. Head immediately across the street to the Guided Bus Tour . The entry is on the left side of Front Street just after Treetops Way (see map marker #5). The tour takes 35 minutes and takes you past almost 70% of the Zoo.

Guided Bus Tour Exit to Reptile House

9:35 AM The end of the Guided Bus Tour is at the Unloading Station . Exit and turn right on the Front Street path towards the Lost Forest and Zoo Exit.

San Diego Zoo map. Route from Guided Tour Bus exit to Reptile House

Reptile House & Galapagos Tortoises

Are you a reptile fan? Continue past Map Marker #2, past the Wedgeworth Bowl turnoff. Turn right to explore the Reptile house. Go through the Reptile house and you’ll find a cul-de-sac where Galapagos tortoises and alligators live.

San Diego Zoo map. Route from Galapagos Tortoise to Flamingos

After you’ve seen them, or if you want to skip the reptiles and the children’s zoo , turn onto the Monkey Trail (close to the Zoo map marker #4). Head for the squawking noises. If you see flamingos you know that you’re on the right path.

Komodo Dragons and Hummingbirds

Both of these exhibits after the reptiles are worth seeing. The dragons are enormous and even when sleeping they’re menacing and make great photographic subjects.

The hummingbirds are typically moving too fast to get a good picture. Just marvel at their jewel-like colors and how fast they zoom by you. There are numerous other birds in this enclosure that are much easier to capture with your camera. And some of the wading birds look spectacular reflected in the lily pond.

Don’t Miss Wildlife Explorers Basecamp – Even if You’re Not a Kid

San Diego Zoo’s children’s zoo is worth seeing even if you left grade school decades ago. An adult can go through this 3.2-acre kid-friendly section in an hour. But if you’ve got kids under 5 years old with you it’s going to take MUCH longer.

Go through it in a roughly counter-clockwise direction. Go to the Spineless Wonders building, then Cool Critters, and finally to Wild Woods with the rope bridge, squirrel monkeys, and water splash pads.

I’ve written an entire page about Basecamp that lists the highlights of each section. I’d make sure to see the prairie dog and burrowing owl exhibit, fennec foxes, squirrel monkeys, and the spectacular “Migration Flyover Experience” at the entry to the Spineless Wonders building.

After you’ve explored Basecamp head back to the flamingos and the rest of your journey.

Flamingos to Gorillas

San Diego Zoo map. Route from flamingos to gorillas.

From the flamingos, it’s a 15-minute walk on the Monkey Trail past some unusual primates (my favorites are the beautiful Colobus monkeys ) to the Western Lowland Gorilla habitat .

Gorillas to Okapi & Hippos

San Diego Zoo map. Route from Gorillas & Okapi to Hippos

Take the Hippo Trail down the steep stairs. At the bottom of the stairs is the lush Scripps Aviary. Take a look inside at all the jeweled birds and jungle plants. Go out the same way that you came into the aviary.

After you see the birds turn left. You’ll see the “let’s make love, not war” Bonobos . Take a quick jog to the left to view the back side of the Malayan Tiger habitat. The tiger may be hidden or hard to see. Don’t worry too much. You’re going to Safari Park in the afternoon and you WILL see tigers there!

Just before you get to the hippos you’ll pass the graceful okapi. I love their striped leggings. Very stylish.

Hippos to Red Pandas & Snow Leopards

San Diego Zoo map. Route from hippos to red pandas & snow leopards

Continue down Hippo Trail past the okapis , hippos , otters and more monkeys.

At Park Way turn right . Walk up to the Panda Trek sign and turn left . Unfortunately the Great Pandas have gone back to China. But don’t despair, the exquisitely cute red pandas are still melting hearts here in San Diego. Keep going on that trail to the snow leopards and their cousins the Amur leopards .

Snow Leopards to Polar Bears…Or Urban Jungle

San Diego Zoo map. Route from snow leopards to polar bears

At this point you have a choice. It depends upon whether you’re feeling strong and full of energy or if you want to take it easy.

Feeling energetic? Take the blue dot route. When you exit the Asian Cats habitat go straight. Walk up the hill from the cats to Kangaroo Bus Stop #3 . This segment is one of the steepest at the Zoo. It starts with some unique hawks & eagles. Follow it up through the Northern Frontier section to the Polar Bear exhibit, Skyfari and the Cougars on the left.

  • Board the Kangaroo Bus at Stop #3 and take it to Stop #1 in the Urban Jungle. We’ll save the Elephant Odyssey for later.

Conserving your energy? Use the yellow dot route. Walk to the Kangaroo Bus. Take the bus from Stop # 2 to Stop #1 at the Urban Jungle. You’ll avoid the lung-sucking uphill climb between Stop #2 and the Skyfari station.

  • The downside of taking the bus is that it does not stop at the Polar Bear exhibit . So if you want to see those furry clowns close-up you’ll have to get off at Stop #3 and backtrack down the hill a bit. Fortunately, the steepest part of the hill is between stop #2 and the bears. So you are saving some energy.

The above Zoo map app screenshot show the Kangaroo Bus route between stops #2, #3 and stop #1 in Urban Jungle.

Chubby Unicorns, Koalas and Bears!

San Diego Zoo map. Walking route from one horned Indian rhinos & koalas to bears.

Truth! San Diego Zoo has unicorns in their Urban Jungle area. Their one horned or Indian rhinos call this home. And their scientific name is Rhinoceros unicornis .

Go clockwise around the Urban Jungle loop. You’ll spot giraffes , flamingos and animal ambassadors like cheetahs and wolves.

Then turn left into the Australian Outback and the outrageously adorable koalas . Say g’day to the guys and girls and the wallabies. Just after the koalas turn right at the driveway and walk back towards Urban Jungle.

If you want to see more birds and the Tasmanian devils cross Bieler Plaza to see them. Then backtrack and head sharply downhill on Center Street to see various bear species, otters and more.

Take the Bridge to Elephant Odyssey

San Diego Zoo map. Route from from bridge elevator to the Elephant Care Center

At Park Way, turn left to the bridge . Take the elevator on the left to the top. Then turn right and go across Bashor Bridge.

Once you’re across the bridge turn right and walk through Elephant Odyssey . You’ll pass a North American fossil exhibit, sloths, lions, and jaguars before the Elephant Care Center. The Center’s like a medical clinic for the Zoo’s geriatric elephants. You may even get to see a keeper perform a pachyderm pedicure with a wood-shop rasp.

San Diego Zoo maps. Route from the Elephant Care Center to the condors and the lemurs at Africa Rocks.

After the condors turn right . Go past the meerkats and take another slight right to see the Kopji Rocks exhibit. Here you’ll see the big-eared serval cats and the too darn cuteness of the tiptoe-strutting Klipspringer antelopes. As you continue down a slight incline you’ll get to the Africa Rocks area .

Veer right at the Hamadryas baboons and continue downhill. You’ll pass the “look at my awesomeness” ibex , yet another great aviary, leopards, and fossa .

San Diego Zoo map. Route from lemurs in Africa Rocks to the bridge.

In the morning you’ll see lemurs soaking up the sunshine looking like mini furry Buddhas. The lemurs also tease the leopards next door because they know that they can get away with it. That’s probably bad dharma, but they don’t care. They’ve got all the food that they want, free top-notch healthcare, and they live in sunny San Diego. All they lack is a good margarita.

South African penguin swimming in the San Diego Zoo's African Penguin exhibit.

The African Penguin habitat is at the bottom of the hill. It’s one of the highlights of the Zoo.

(Due to the threat of avian flu, the penguins have been temporarily moved to a more secure, covered location in Bear Canyon.)

There are rocks and nests above water. But the best part of this exhibit is the underwater aquarium views. Watching those tuxedo torpedoes ‘flying’ underwater through one-story high windows is mesmerizing. Added bonus; it’s a great place to sit down and cool off in the summertime!

After you tear your eyes away from the penguins, walk downhill to the bridge.

Lunch at Treetops Cafè or Albert’s?

San Diego Zoo map. Route from Treetops Cafe to Parker Aviary

1:00 PM Walk to the bridge elevator and ride it to the top again. This time turn left towards the restaurants and eating areas. Eating at Treetops Cafè will be quicker, but Albert’s has better food . Both have great views while dining. Allow yourself about 30 minutes to eat at Treetops, an hour at Albert’s.

You don’t have to purchase food to eat at the Treetops Cafè dining decks. If you’ve packed a lunch stop here to eat. Sit down at one of the tables, chow down and enjoy the view!

Also, be aware that there are many other eating options once you get outside the Zoo. Here’s an article that I wrote about more restaurants within Balboa Park .

After eating (or not), take Treetops Way to the left. Follow the signs to the Parker Aviary and admire the toucans and other birds in the lush foliage.

After that, you’re on the Orangutan Trail . You’ll see the orange-furred “men of the forest” and Siamang apes.

San Diego Zoo map route from Parker Aviary to the orangutans and the Zoo exit.

After you see the apes, rejoin Treetops Way and take it to Front Street . Turn left and you’ll soon see the Exit sign .

1:45 PM – 2:30 PM Drive or take a ride-share to San Diego Safari Park. Give yourself at least 45 minutes to make the trip.

Do Safari Park Like a Cheetah

(Elephant viewing may be limited due to the construction of the new, larger ‘Elephant Valley’ exhibit.)

2:45 PM Enter the park. Pick up a map! If you want to eat at The Watering Hole , find out if it is open that day and when it closes. Call general information at 760-747-8702.

Check the map’s ENTERTAINMENT section. If the Cheetah Run starts at 3:30 head there immediately. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to walk there.

Safari Park Entrance to Cheetah Run

Safari Park map - route from the entrance to Cheetah Run.

Take Safari Walk, turn right at map marker #4 onto Nairobi Walk. At map marker #6 stay left to keep on Nairobi Walk. At Africa Walk (and the lemurs) turn left then go down the elevator. Shiley’s Cheetah Run is near map marker #11 and close to the Africa Tram entrance. If you get lost, ask the red shirted volunteers.

If you have about an hour to get down to Cheetah Run, at map marker #6 detour into the Hidden Jungle aviary. Then backtrack just slightly to go into the Rainforest Aviary. The birds are spectacularly colorful.

Cheetah Run is a MUST-SEE Safari Park attraction (if it’s being held). The event lasts 20-30 minutes. The actual running takes place in less than 10 seconds.

NOTE : this attraction was canceled during COVID restrictions and has not reopened yet. For now, you can only see these spotted speedsters run during the Sun Up Cheetah Safari which takes place before the park opens.

drive through safari san diego

Witnessing a cheetah accelerate faster than a Ferrari and hit 60 mph in three strides is not to be missed. You’re close enough to hear its feet hitting the ground, grabbing for traction. Sometimes you can hear it breathing in HUGE gulps of air as it flies by.

And watching the cat skidding to a stop with their tail whipping around for balance and turf clods flying everywhere is almost as impressive.

After the Cheetah Run is done, head to Lion Camp along the African Loop . There are plenty of spots for great photos of the king (& queens) of beasts.

Cheetah Run to Lion Camp and Africa Tram

Safari Park map - route from Cheetah Run to Africa Tram

Continue on Africa Loop until you reach the Africa Tram for a guided 30 minute ride through the African Plains exhibit. It can take more than 30 minutes wait to get on board. But it’s not bad. The waiting areas are shaded and the park operators turn on misters if the weather’s hot.

From Africa Tram to Okavango Outpost, Africa Loop and Okapi

Safari Park map - route from Africa Tram to Okavango Outpost restaurant, cheetahs, okapi and the rest of the Africa Loop.

Hungry yet? After riding the Africa Tram turn left and continue down the African Loop . You’ll pass the Okavango Outpost restaurant. Grab a quick bite to eat if you’re hungry. Or dig into your backpack for some chow. Sit at the tables outside overlooking the lagoon or head further down the path to the cheetah enclosure and eat there on one of the benches.

Continue on Africa Loop until the end . Along this route you’ll see flamingos and colobus monkeys with their gorgeous long black and white fur on the lagoon part of the loop. Further on you’ll see many more animals including vultures, giant eland and okapi. When you get to the elevator again go straight and turn left on the Service Road at Map Marker #11.

From Elephant Valley to Gorilla Forest

Safari Park map. Route from Elephant Valley to Gorilla Forest.

Go up the Service Road to Map Marker #16. From there you can see Elephant Valley. If the pachyderms are not visible, take a detour across Tembo Stadium to the Elephant Viewing Patio.

Once you’ve filled your eyes (and heart) with memories of these gentle giants backtrack to the Service Road. Turn right and then left to go under the bridge at Map Marker #16 .

When you get to the top of the hill at Oasis Deli go left to Map Marker #6 . Take Nairobi Walk past the Lorikeets again. But this time turn right at the ring-tail lemurs. Go inside if they’re active. Otherwise, continue up to Gorilla Forest .

After you’ve seen the great apes, keep going in the same direction until you come to the lagoon. Turn left on the Lagoon Loop . Cross the covered bridge and head through the plaza towards Map Marker #2 and Safari Walk which heads up to Tiger Trail (click the link for another article I wrote on what makes it so special).

Tigers, Kangaroos, Platypus, Condors & More!

Safari Park map. Loop route through Walkabout Australia, kangaroos, platypus, condors and Tiger Trail.

At the Tull Family Tiger Trail welcome arch the rest of the park is one big loop. You can either go right to see Walkabout Australia and Condor Ridge and then see the tigers last or do it in reverse. It depends on how much time you have before the park closing time and which animals you want to see the most.

Definitely make an effort to see the platypus in Walkabout Australia . They’re the only ones on exhibit outside of Australia. Besides, they’re the most surprising animals at the Safari Park. They’re not going to be what you expect.

Remember that tigers are mostly nocturnal and will be more active at twilight or later. The downside is that they’ll be a bit harder to see. And flash photography is frowned upon or snarled at. So don’t even think about using it.

After seeing the Tiger Trail, Condor Ridge, and Walkabout Australia loop walk back down to the Safari Park entrance and go find your parked car or rideshare vehicle and collapse.

CONGRATULATIONS!

You’ve done something few people even try. You’ve seen both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park in one day!

Tips for Visiting the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

San Diego / May 1, 2013 by Allison / 23 Comments This article may contain sponsored content or affiliate links.

Hey there! Planning a trip to San Diego?

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is different from any other zoo my family has visited. We made a special trip for it – along with LEGOLAND California and plenty of beach time – right after my son successfully completed cancer treatment. It was a much-needed vacation for our entire family. My kids were ages 6 and 8.

We visited the San Diego Zoo on a previous trip, and were excited to see what makes the Safari Park special. Here's what you need to know to plan a great day at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

It's Not in San Diego

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is NOT in San Diego. It's in Escondido, California, about an hour's drive (30 miles) north of the San Diego Zoo, which is in downtown San Diego.

The Safari Park is a little nearer to Carlsbad, home of LEGOLAND California. We booked a hotel in Carlsbad and enjoyed activities nearby. We never set foot in San Diego on this trip.

Related: My Top Tips for Visiting LEGOLAND California

It's a Big Zoo

The official website calls the Safari Park an “expansive wildlife sanctuary.” Half the park's 1,800 acres has been set aside as a protected habitat for native species of plants and animals.

What does that mean to you? The Safari Park has fewer animals and larger habitats than the San Diego Zoo. The animals have more space to roam like they would in the wild.

You'll probably walk a lot more at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. You can also enjoy experiences that aren't available at most other zoos.

Safari Tours

The thing that sets the San Diego Zoo Safari Park apart its Safari Tours. These are not included in basic admission. If you want to feed giraffes, meet a cheetah, zip line over the zoo or even camp overnight, check out tour options and prices on the Safari Park home page .

Safaris may fill up, so consider making reservations in advance. Most have minimum age limits.

We would have booked the Cheetah Safari , but our cheetah lover was too young. I asked about the age limit and was told that they didn't want the cheetah to mistake a small child for a meal. I couldn't argue with that rationale.

What's Included in Basic Admission

We bought the basic 1-Day Pass and it easily filled our entire day at the Safari Park. The basic ticket includes all of the animal exhibits, Africa Tram, shows and play areas.

The Africa Tram tour is 20-30 minutes long and good for all ages. You'll see African animals roaming freely through acres of open space, including giraffes, rhinoceros, zebras, cape buffalo, gazelle, various birds, and more. You'll also see lions and cheetahs in separate habitats.

Arrive around opening time and walk directly to the Africa Tram at the back of the zoo to avoid long waits during peak season. Africa Tram tours typically start at 10 AM. If you can't be there early, consider riding the tram in the late afternoon to avoid peak crowds.

The best show at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is Shiley's Cheetah Run in the late afternoon. This is your chance to see a cheetah run at top speed, and it's pretty cool. If the day is not too warm and the cheetah is feeling good, he may run twice. My son loves cheetahs, so this was one of our top priorities.

Arrive up to an hour early if you want to stand right next to the fence for the Cheetah Run. There is no seating for this show unless you purchase the Cheetah Safari. The show is 15-20 minutes long.

There is a bird show , which is similar to bird shows we have seen at other zoos. We found it educational and entertaining, and the amphitheater is large enough that we had no trouble getting good seats just a few minutes before the show.

Our children enjoyed feeding the lorikeets . It costs nothing to go inside the habitat, but plan to spend a few dollars if you want to feed the birds.

We visited this exhibit in the afternoon and were warned that the lorikeets had already been well fed. We successfully fed a few, but the experience was not ideal. Visit early in the day to get the most from this activity.

Playgrounds

Our children (ages 6 and 8) enjoyed brushing goats at the petting zoo and learning about the activities of African villagers in the Village Playground . Here, my children carried pots on their heads, “built” a hut and beat on drums. The Safari Park has three other play areas, including a splash pad in the summer.

Like many zoos, this one has a carousel , where you can purchase a single ride or all-day wristband. We skipped it this time.

Dining and Shopping

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has several restaurants and lots of gift shops. We bought healthy sandwiches and kids meals at Okavango Outpost , which were good.

You can bring your own food into the zoo in a day pack or stroller. Large coolers are not allowed inside. Packing in your own sandwiches, drinks and snacks is a good way to save money.

Safari Park vs. San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is larger than the San Diego Zoo, but has fewer animals. It has more unique activities and safari tours. It is farther away from most other San Diego activities.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has a lot of favorite African animals like lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, rhinos and zebras. Pandas, polar bears, koalas and monkeys can only be seen at the San Diego Zoo.

If your family really loves zoos, then consider both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park on the same trip. My family visits San Diego every few years, so one zoo per trip was plenty for us.

You cannot do both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park on the same day. They are too big and too far from each other to get your money's worth. One full day per zoo is about right.

If you can only visit one zoo, I'd pick the San Diego Zoo over the Safari Park. It has more animals and the location is more convenient. However, if you'd rather ride the Africa Tram, see the Cheetah Run or try any of the unique Safaris, then choose the Safari Park.

I surprised my husband last year with the Zipline Safari at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It’s the longest continuous zipline in the continental U.S. So awesome!

May 6, 2013 at 8:27 pm

That sounds so fun! That’s the kind of surprise I’d like.

thanks for the info, heading there this weekend for Mother’s day.

GORGEOUS photos lady! Great info for any family headed that way too.

Thanks, Keryn! That was our first big outing with our new DSLR camera and I too was impressed with the results.

October 3, 2013 at 1:20 pm

We LOVED the San Diego Wild Animal Park. For us- the most sense with the tickets was to buy a year long membership before we left home. I don’t recall what the price was then, but it is $114 now for 2 adults. So if you only plan to go to the Wild Animal Park, that’s an extra $26, but if you plan to go to the zoo too, or more than one day at each park- it is a steal. Since we also went to the Wild Animal Park twice and the San Diego zoo twice (over the course of 3 days): it saved us a ton of money. And because we had unlimited entries, we went back to the zoo for just an hour before we had to get to the airport, just to get a chance to see the Pandas in the early morning. It was nice and relaxing to know we didn’t need to ‘get our money’s worth”. (Plus we got free parking, and then we got a magazine sent to our home for a year!)

October 3, 2013 at 3:03 pm

That’s a great tip! We bought an annual pass to Sea World San Diego once for the same reason. It’s sometimes worth looking at the price of an annual membership, even if you don’t live in the area. Look at the reciprocal benefits too. You may get free or discounted admission to other attractions in that area or in your home city!

Is it worth going to the safari park zoo ?

Allison Laypath

September 19, 2014 at 7:34 am

I thought that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park was worthwhile. If you want a traditional zoo experience and you have to choose between the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park, choose the zoo. If you have been to the zoo and you want something a little different, try the safari park. Unless you love zoos, you may not want to do both on the same vacation.

Did I answer your question? If not, please let me know!

October 11, 2014 at 11:39 pm

do you have to buy the zoo entrance ticket to go to the Safari Park?

October 12, 2014 at 9:39 am

The Safari Tram is included in the basic entrance pass for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. You do not need to visit or purchase a pass for the San Diego Zoo in San Diego to visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido. They are different zoos in different locations and their admissions are separate, though if you do want to visit both on the same trip, you can save a few dollars by bundling the two admissions.

How long can you wait to use your 1-day pass for the Safari Park?

February 11, 2015 at 11:52 am

If you purchase a 1-day pass online through the zoo’s website, it is good for one year from the date of purchase.

May 25, 2015 at 12:20 pm

Thank you so much for the tips, we are visiting this summer and can not wait!

May 25, 2015 at 7:33 pm

Glad we could help. Have a great trip!

March 6, 2016 at 6:46 pm

I’m assuming the safari tour costs are in addition to the basic entrance fee???

March 6, 2016 at 7:33 pm

The Africa Tram is included in the basic ticket. The various safari experiences do cost more, but are optional. We had a great day with only the basic ticket. It’s a big place with some fun included activities like the Africa Tram.

Thank you. This is what i wanted to hear. How long does it take for the basic safari

June 16, 2016 at 8:26 am

Glad to be helpful! I don’t recall the exact time for the Africa Tram, but I’d guess it was around 30 minutes. The last tram leaves 45 minutes before the park closes. 11-3 are peak times on busy days.

May 11, 2016 at 10:53 pm

which safari experience is worth it? I’m thinking the bikes anyone suggest it?

Best Safaris Near Me – Drive-through Safaris in the US

drive through safari san diego

With so many finding respite in the presence of wildlife, many travelers may wonder “Where are the best safaris near me?” Across the country, there are opportunities everywhere to see animals—zoos, nature centers, national parks, and wildlife preserves.

While many safaris (or game drives) are self-driven, this post will also share destinations where visitors can enjoy a guided animal safari. All these places will offer something on par with an African safari but are hosted closer to home, right here in the United States.

Safaris in the USA

For those looking for a safari experience close to home, each region hosts a variety of great options. Additionally, each park offers a genuine safari adventure, complete with roaming animals, open lands, and some type of drive-through navigation.

SAFARIS NEAR ME

Select a region or scroll down to view all.

Pacific Southwest Rocky Mountain Midwest Northeast Southeast

Be aware that some safari experiences are for adults only, while others are more for families. It is important to note, that for the safety of the animals, each one has a strict no-pets allowed policy. Sorry, Benji, you must stay in the hotel room.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center – Glen Rose, TX

Dedicated to conservation, the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center considers the 1,800-acre property more of a sanctuary, rather than just another drive-through safari. The 7.2-mile route allows guests to interact with approximately 1,100 different roaming animals.

Safaris Near Me >> Rocky Mountains

Camel Safari – Bunkerville, NV

drive through safari san diego

Located about an hour north of Las Vegas, Camel Safari offers two-hour desert safaris by camel, ATV, or by tram. Exotic enough to be seen on “ The Bachelorette ” those that can’t make the trip to Morocco may appreciate the next best thing.

Budget Tip : The Camel Safari – Safari Tram Ride and Zoo Tour from Las Vegas makes it easy and affordable to visit.

Yellowstone Bear World – Rexburg, ID

Idaho’s most popular wildlife attraction is Yellowstone Bear World . This wildlife safari is often visited by travelers from West Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. As you drive your own vehicle through the park, you’ll encounter the very best Rocky Mountain animals including, elk, bison, moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goats, and of course, both American black bear and grizzly bear.

One nice characteristic about this particular safari is that large vehicles, such as RVs and motorhomes are welcome to drive the route. While there are more private wildlife experiences offered at an additional cost, general admission also includes the amusement rides, the petting zoo, and as many drives through the park that day as your time allows.

Safaris Near Me >> Midwest

Surprisingly, Ohio hosts some of the most authentic safari experiences that travelers can find in the USA. Just be aware, many parks and outfitters work seasonally.

The Wilds – Cumberland, OH

If you’re an American who will never be able to check an African safari off your bucket list, then this is the travel experience you’ve been looking for. The Wilds is probably one of the most authentic safari experiences available in the USA.

drive through safari san diego

Knowledgeable guides take guests on a two-hour adventure through open habitats to see cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and much more. The conservation center also has opportunities to make your safari complete, with overnight yurt stays, 3-course dinners, and specialty off-roading drives to scout for animals. For family vacations, there are cabins and a 12-person lodge is also available.

drive through safari san diego

Other than hand-feeding the animals, most guests agree that the highlight is sitting around the campfire as night falls, watching the watering hole for wildlife enjoying a bottle of wine.

Generally, safaris operate from May through October, however, there are winter tours too. This would be an amazing honeymoon, engagement, or anniversary trip idea because overnight yurt stays are 21+ only.

African Safari Wildlife Park – Clinton, OH

With the warning of “not for those who like pristine vehicles,” the 100-acre African Safari Wildlife Park offers a chance to come face to face with various hoofed animals. Visitors can self-drive the route as many times as they’d like but the journey is expensive, so be sure to bring a heavy wallet.

Unfortunately, the park only provides one cup of animal feed per group (not per individual) and all other attractions or cups of feed are an additional charge. Visitors can’t help but notice the placement of the car vacuums at the exit for an additional fee of $2.00.

Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours – Custer, SD

One reason travelers decide to take a Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour is to give themselves a break from driving and let someone else play tour guide. Many families appreciate the opportunity to sit back, enjoy the ride, and listen to narration from a local guide.

drive through safari san diego

On this 1.5 to 2-hour safari, guests set out in search of buffalo, deer, longhorn sheep, prairie dogs, elk, and pronghorn. Take note, going off-road seems to depend on where the animals are congregating. Therefore, off-roading is not a guarantee. If wildlife is along the main road, that’s where you’ll spend the majority of your time.

Budget Tip: Pair this safari with the Mount Rushmore and Black Hills Tour with Two Meals and a Music Variety Show tour. Stay at the Bavarian Inn , a European-inspired boutique mountain resort.

Eureka Springs Safari Park – Eagle Rock, MO

Offering a 4-mile drive-through safari and a petting zoo, Eureka Springs Safari Park is home to over 500 animals from all over the world, representing 56 species. Simmons Wildlife Park is open from April through October.

Even further, throughout the year, the zoo offers Wild Wednesdays which is the drive-through that is also free for all guests.

We all have bad habits.

24/7 San Diego news stream: Watch NBC 7 free wherever you are

Whether its doomscrolling on social media, spending too much time on Netflix, or smoking and drinking excessively, some of these are unproductive at best, but many still choose to indulge in them.

People tend to blame external factors for their bad habits, but the truth is that the root cause is usually internal.

"It's an emotion regulation problem," says Nir Eyal, behavioral design expert and best-selling author of "Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life."

The average American spends 4 hours and 37 minutes a day looking at their phone screens, according to Harmony Healthcare IT .

This figure is even higher in parts of Asia. In Indonesia, the average daily screen time spent on a mobile phone was a whopping 6.05 hours in 2023, according to Statista . The average in Thailand was 5.64 hours of screen time, and 4.77 hours in India, according to the same dataset.

Slamming China over its stance on Russia and the war, Ukraine might have made a big miscalculation

"We do time studies on why people check their phones, and only 10% of time is it because of a ping, ding or ring," Eyal told CNBC Make It .

"So 90% of the time, it's for some other reason — a feeling, which is actually the root cause of everything we do — it's about the desire to escape discomfort."

Ultimately, in order to cut out bad habits associated with distraction, people need to learn how to regulate their emotions and master their internal triggers.

Here are some ways to achieve this, according to Eyal.

3-step process to break bad habits

  • Take control, don't blame external factors
  • Identify the internal trigger
  • Create a plan of attack for when the trigger shows up

The first step is to realize that you have control over your actions instead of blaming outside factors, Eyal said.

"People who have an internal locus of control realize that they control what they do — we know that [they] are wealthier, they're happier, they have more friends [and] they contribute more to the community," he said.

Secondly, identify the preceding emotion or the root "pain" that triggers the bad habit craving, according to Eyal.

"Time management is pain management, money management is pain management, weight management is pain management. It's all pain management," Eyal said.

If a person can't finish a task without checking their phone, it's possibly because they're bored or uncertain. If someone keeps snacking late into the night, perhaps they've had a stressful day. If they can't stop scrolling through a dating app, chances are that they're feeling lonely, according to Eyal.

"Even when we think we're seeking pleasure, we're actually driven by the desire to free ourselves from the pain of wanting — only by understanding our pain can we begin to control it and find better ways to deal with negative urges," Eyal said in his book "Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life."

Finally, develop a plan of attack for when the emotional trigger shows up.

"Identify the internal trigger and have a plan for what you will do when you feel that discomfort," and the key is to do this ahead of time, said Eyal.

Fighting off bad habits

Here are two methods he uses to fight off bad habits and distraction:

1. The 10-minute rule When a trigger for a bad habit comes up, Eyal tells himself: "It's fine to give in, but not right now. I have to wait just 10 minutes."

Following this rule can help people do what's called " surfing the urge ."

Eyal said in his book that it means: "Noticing the sensations and riding them like a wave — neither pushing them away nor acting on them."

Whether it is a craving for a cigarette or a craving to check social media, this can help people cope until the sensation subsides, according to Eyal.

2. Create a mantra "This is what it feels like to get better."

That's the mantra Eyal repeats to himself whenever he feels an internal trigger.

Rather than immediately giving in and getting distracted or indulging in the bad habit, he allows himself to sit in the feeling, recognize that it's hard, and realize that the discomfort is actually a sign of growth.
