Los Angeles-based Dustbowl Revival are all about pushing the boundaries of American roots music, specialising in uplifting folk-rock ballads that often tilt into joyful soul songs. Lead singer and songwriter Z. Lupetin (who is also a playwright) has recently been taking the band in additional new directions, mixing in elements of theatre and creating songs that are lushly orchestrated and cinematic in feel.

The group’s most recent album, ‘Is It You, Is It Me’, was released in early 2020 and saw them expanding beyond their already genre-defying style to incorporate everything from folk to funk to New Orleans swing and more. Infused with subtle pop sensibilities that enhanced their infectious sound, it earned plaudits from numerous UK publications and airplay on several BBC stations. Having now emerged from an enforced touring hiatus, founding members Lupetin, Josh Heffernan and Ulf Bjorlin are excited to welcome a new wave of talent to their ever-evolving group who will be introduced to UK fans on a set of dates either side of a highly anticipated appearance at the Cambridge Folk Festival in late July. A first single featuring the reconfigured line-up entitled ‘Lying To Myself’ will also be released in the middle of the month, which Lupetin describes as “a dark love-song led by dreamy harmony vocals, an aching pedal steel guitar and a galloping beat. In many ways it was inspired by Chris Isaak’s haunting classic ‘Wicked Game’ and Milky Chance’s moody dance hit ‘Stolen Dance’. Based on the end of a romantic entanglement, it focuses on the stories we tell ourselves when one person can’t accept that the other is leaving. Love, obsession, infidelity, sharing a dog - it all gets complicated. Fall in and out of love in your twisty twenties? This one is for you.”

Dustbowl Revival began in 2009 when Chicagoan Lupetin arrived in L.A. as an aspiring screenwriter, swiftly grew disillusioned with his job in advertising, and placed an online ad seeking musicians who not only shared his love of Louis Armstrong, Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin and the brass bands of New Orleans, but who also wanted to craft songs like Americana pioneers Wilco, Lucinda Williams and Bruce Springsteen.

Dustbowl Revival - Is It You, Is It Me (Album Review)

Los Angeles-based six-piece Dustbowl Revival are fronted by vocalists Z. Lupetin and Liz Beebe and their expansive, genre-mashing new album Is It You, Is It Me follows their warmly received 2017 debut.  The lineup has slimmed with the departure of mandolin player Daniel Mark and bassist James Klopfleisch - though the former co-wrote several tracks here - but the reduction in personnel hasn’t impacted on the ambition and fearless kitchen-sinkery of a record that refuses stylistically to fit in.  If albums by artists as disparate as Jeff Finlin, Cake and Rusted Root rub shoulders uneasily in your record collection then Dustbowl Revival could be the missing link.

The Baker's Dozen #19 Dustbowl Revival

RGM caught up with Z. Lupetin of Dustbowl Revival for the latest in our Baker’s Dozen feature. The Los Angeles based act released a cool new album ‘Is It You, Is It Me’ recently which has received impressive reviews ( RGM Review ). So please join us as Z. shares his thoughts on the music business, Michael Kiwanuka, Bill Withers, legendary LA venue The Troubadour and why we all need a lava lamp in our lives. Honestly, we do, we really do.

Dustbowl Revival commences the ‘Winter Wonderland’ tour

  • January 24, 2024

Los Angeles-based Dustbowl Revival set out to push the envelope of Americana music. The seven-piece band specialise in folk-rock ballads and fun tracks led by Z. Lupetin (who also writes plays by the way). Now, they are taking even more new directions by mixing theatre, orchestral instrumentation and cinematic soundscapes.

The current album by the band, ‘Is It You, Is It Me’, saw them expanding beyond their already genre-defying style to incorporate everything from folk to funk to New Orleans swing and so much in between.

The always evolving group led by founding members Lupetin (vocals/guitar), Josh Heffernan (drums/percussion) and Ulf Bjorlin (trombone) welcomed co-singer Lashon Halley and other new talents to the band in 2022 for a UK tour that included rapturously received sets at the Cambridge Folk Festival, plus the recording of an EP, ‘Set Me Free’. This line-up return for a short UK tour this week that includes festival appearances at UK Americana Week in London and Celtic Connections in Glasgow, followed by a week of dates in Germany and Scandinavia.

Having already spent years on the road, selling out hometown shows at LA’s famed Troubadour, headlining festivals and wowing crowds from Denmark to China, Dustbowl Revival have never stopped making the joyful, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that light up their transcendent live shows.

Dustbowl Revival

dustbowl revival uk tour

“It’s a fresh and exciting record, a celebration of spirit and soul.” ****   ALL MUSIC

Dustbowl Revival are a seven-piece Americana Soul band from Venice, CA. Their fourth studio album, which is self-titled, was produced by Flogging Molly founding member and Grammy winning producer Ted Hutt, and features Grammy winning blues legend Keb’ Mo’. The album was released last summer via Signature Sounds Recordings to glowing reviews, five radio chart debuts, and two Billboard chart debuts on the Heatseekers Chart and Americana-Folk Chart. While the band launched with an old-time style and deeper bluegrass roots, they recently departed toward a more modern soul sound, still with their mixture of New Orleans sounds, Americana, a little blues, and roots-rock. The album has over 3 million streams on Spotify and the band had 260K+ monthly listeners for six months. In late 2017 they were honored with a special night sharing their story and music at The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

From Outside Lands Music Festival:  “It was an old-time medicine show featuring the kind of roots music…whose Americana swing was so fun I went back to see them again the next day.” Rolling Stone

Over the last five years Dustbowl has toured over 200 days per year and become known for their free-flowing and joyous live shows, combining their funk rhythm and brass section with a fast-picking string band section. They’ve opened for bands as diverse as Lake Street Dive, Trombone Shorty and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, toured China as a guest of the state department and headlined festivals like Delfest, Floydfest, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Bergenfest (Norway) and Tonder Festival (Denmark). The band received a big wave of attention with their music video that featured famous actor Dick Van Dyke for “Never Had to Go”, which garnered over 10 million cumulative views. Subsequently the band, song, and video were featured in HBO doc, If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast which stars Jerry Seinfeld, Dick Van Dyke, and Mel Brooks.

AWARDED BEST LIVE BAND IN LA!  “In a city like Los Angeles, home to musical stars in nearly every known genre, handing out the Best Live Band title is not easy. But the free-thinking local collective Dustbowl Revival’s upbeat, old-school, All-American sonic safaris exemplify everything shows should be: hot, spontaneous, engaging and, best of all, a pleasure to hear.”  LA Weekly

Available for FESTIVALS summer 2023.

Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. After celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring and playing thousands of shows together in ten countries and counting, the group collected a devoted fanbase coast-to-coast. After throwing five of their own virtual Sway-At-Home festivals during the shut-down featuring nearly forty artists, the always evolving group of string and brass players led by founding members Z. Lupetin, Josh Heffernan, Ulf Bjorlin are excited to welcome a new wave of talent to the band, after emerging from a pandemic touring hiatus.  After spending years on the road, selling out hometown shows at LA’s famed Troubadour, headlining festivals and wowing crowds from Denmark to China, Dustbowl Revival never stopped making their joyful, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows.

Even so, with the bands emotional new single “Beside You” and 2020’s ambitious full length  Is It You, Is It Me , they wanted to strike into new terrain. As they mined new energetic material from the place where folk and funk music meet, they teamed up with producer Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter) and engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens). The latest album strikes a more personal note than ever before, representing the latest stage in a band that never stops exploring new sounds.

Many of the songs feel like small theater pieces coming to life verse by verse. It’s the yin-yang conversational harmony that is the true specialty of lead songwriter and singer Z. Lupetin, who also doubles as a playwright and recently wrote the music for a Greek tragedy set in Gold Rush era California. While longtime co-lead Liz Beebe has stepped away from the band after a long run, an amazing young talent in Lashon Halley has stepped in to bring new life to the songs, matching Lupetin’s intense vocal range with her own.

With a big brass-and-strings band building around the voices,  Is It You, Is It Me  isn’t afraid to explore the personal and political tension that the group may have shied away from facing before. The album tackles uneasy topics, often where the political feels personal, especially in the defiant “Get Rid of You,” which was inspired by the student activists who emerged from the tragic Parkland High School shooting in Florida. The ominous driving brass groove of “Enemy,” hones in on a painful generational split between a daughter and her parents who may have voted in a tyrant, and have become strangers to her. This yearning search for common ground pervades the record as a whole.

Where the band really sets on a new course is on lushly cinematic, orchestrated set pieces like “Mirror,” “Runaway” and, most notably, the current fan favorite and live showstopper “Sonic Boom,” about the struggle to reveal who you really are in the hidden, rose-colored world of social media. There’s a new widescreen expansiveness to these songs that wouldn’t be out of place in a packed arena or orchestra hall with a full neon light show. Acting like a nimble rock orchestra, during the recording process, each member played multiple instruments, and the group brought in new musicians on symphonic brass, and local friends to sing as a spur-of-the-moment choir.

If one thing is clear,  Is It You, Is It Me  represents another large leap forward for Dustbowl Revival, coming after their acclaimed self-titled 2017 album. Produced by Grammy-winner Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, Drop Kick Murphy’s), it transitioned the group from a “roots dance party band” that continues to thrive on the festival circuit, to a nuanced ensemble embracing more soulful territory without losing their original fire. That self-titled record was a direct bridge to the newest work, rising number to one on the Amazon Americana chart and featuring a funky favorite “Honey I Love You” where the band joyfully teaming up with blues master Keb Mo’. Their heartache folk number “Got Over”, surprised the band by racking up over seven million streams and counting online. “Beside You” stayed in the Americana charts for months and “Enemy” became a staple on SiriusXM, especially during the 2020 election. To top it off, Billboard Magazine added about that Is It You, Is It Me is “the biggest sonic work of the Venice, Calif.-based troupe’s career.”

Dustbowl Revival’s story started humbly. Nearly thirteen years ago Z. Lupetin, a Chicago native who attended college in Michigan came to L.A. to be a screenwriter, grew disillusioned with his job in advertising, and placed a hopeful ad on Craigslist. He sought to find fellow musicians who shared his roving love of Louis Armstrong, Bob Wills, Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin and the brass bands of New Orleans, but also wanted to write songs like Americana pioneers Wilco, Lucinda Williams and even Bruce Springsteen. There are still players in the group who responded to that initial odd quest. New talent on electric guitar, piano and more are joining in for 2021. “Maybe we don’t know where this journey will take us or how long it will last,” acknowledges Lupetin, “That’s my take on the importance of what we try to do. Music elevates us, lifts us up, makes us change our minds, takes us out of our comfort zones. If just one person can be moved by just one song, that’s enough.”

Talented, Fun, and Inspiring

Dustbowl Revival was all that and more! Never having head them before, we bought tickets based upon an online sampling...and so glad we did! Truly one of the most talented bands I've heard in a very long time with a rare brass touch that makes the sound jazzy, fun, and oh so very danceable! I was actually dancing in my seat when the band invited the audience to get up and dance! Their music simply makes your soul happy and wanting to dance it all out! I was also equally inspired by the timely and direct messages of their music which addresses contemporary social issues within the context of beautiful and lively sounds. I left happy, contemplative, and wanting to hear more!

LOVED THEM!

I thought I was going to see a tribute band. They did a few covers of 70's/80's songs (really well) but did mostly their own tunes. I LOVED THE DUSTBOWL REVIVAL!! The female singer was cool and had a great voice. It was fun to watch all of them groove on stage. Their music brought me to a familiar place but with a new spin. I would see them again whenever I have the chance.

One of the best shows ever. Great material, great group

good mix of sounds, band members and abilities. Loved the tried, true and original music of these talented performers. Was one of the best shows ever. I will be back next year and will buy tickets for all three nights. This was an awesome performance. Many thanks to the American Theater for putting this on again.

Outstanding

Truthfully did not know what to expect as we have never seen this group. They exceeded all our expectations! Great music, great style, much fun and energy, in short, a genuine crowd pleaser. Also, what better place to perform than the American Theater!! Doesn't get any better than this. Great fun, we would go again.

Outstanding!

Rarely have I seen a band with the talent, wit, respect, and humor of this one. What a fantastic new discovery!

Dustbowl Revival

Very entertaining ensemble, they were engaging and were able to get an audience probably much older then they usually play for up and involved in the show. Each member was given the opportunity to display their individual talents, none disappointed. My only criticism was though the instrumentation was exceptional, the volume was too high for a space the size of the American Theater and drowned out much of the vocals.

Fantastic show!

Sometimes you think... should I really see (insert performer)...again... it will be the same stuff. Not so with Dustbowl Revival... this band throws a party! They are all so talented ... their enthusiasm lights up the crowd. Caution: you will likely be exhausted but happily so.

What a time - band has it together Dustbowl controls the room!

One for the records

Dustbowl Revival put on a show and a half. The room had more energy then a nuclear reactor. The show was magical

Eh...Just Eh

The show was disappointing. There were 8 performers who sounded like 8 performers playing separately from one another. Plus I came expecting to hear more bliuegrass-type music that I had heard on old albums. Not only didn’t I get that but they played multiple covers from other bands. Bizarre. And the male lead was really distracting. I won’t be going back to see them.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The London Stock Exchange has had a disappointing few years. It has been devoid of any major initial public offerings since Deliveroo’s disastrous 2021 floating. Investors and market bosses have been let down, too, by a series of snubs and turnabouts, including former UK tech star Arm’s decision to list in New York and Turkish miner WE Soda’s last-minute withdrawal, both in 2023.

So it is with a measure of caution that many in the City have welcomed reports of three companies that appear set to list in London. Raspberry Pi, the British microcomputer maker, has confirmed a listing with an expected valuation of up to £540mn. Shein, the Singapore-based Chinese fast fashion conglomerate, is understood to be planning a London listing — and has reportedly been wooed by Labour and the Conservatives. Anglo American is also said to be considering an IPO of De Beers, the South African diamond giant, via the London market as part of a radical restructuring plan.

While all this would be a boost for the London market, it is not a perfect reopening. In the “vibes”-based IPO market, the company that tests the sluggish exchange will set the tone for those that follow. In an ideal world, a new era would have been ushered in by the listing of a homegrown tech star or earnings behemoth. Raspberry Pi does not exactly fit the bill, with a modest valuation and products that have limited use beyond students and hobbyists.

For Shein, by far the largest of the three, London was not its first choice. Rather, its earlier attempt at listing in New York was apparently rebuffed by anti-China sentiment. Its lustre is further dimmed by accusations of forced labour , and it remains possible that the Chinese Communist party could revoke its blessing. Market reactions to De Beers could vary, too, given its complex relations with the Botswanan government and questions over the sustainability of its business model.

However, this is the real world — not one where wishful thinking alone can create a British tech giant. Raspberry Pi and Shein IPOs ought to be celebrated. Market authorities and advisers should be dedicated to seeing their listings over the finish line. A De Beers listing is also worth encouraging, provided its sellers can address its business fundamentals.

The London market is currently experiencing some unaccustomed good feeling, and successful listings could shore up the positive mood. With a soaring FTSE and a flurry of opportunities for investors to snag shares through so-called follow-on transactions , investors are waking up to the fact that under-owned London companies are worth more than their current valuations.

The next government should seize on the momentum to foster a better fundraising environment. The recommendations of the Hill review should be acted on with more urgency. An industrial policy that invests further in critical technologies and removes impediments to new businesses would support the future supply of listable companies. Revising stamp duty could spur additional demand for UK equities, and better financial literacy education could help create new generations of local equity investors.

Regulators should be cautious, however, that the push for more listings does not detract from LSEG’s strengths. While Shein’s shift across the pond can make London appear to be less stringent than New York, London maintains world-class transparency standards. Regulators should not give in to the temptation to lower those standards to attract more listings. Doing so would jeopardise the London market’s historic role as the go-to location for emerging market companies, like Shein, to prove their international bona fides.

Jeremy Guscott: I’m on a bus to the final with childhood friends – the Bath buzz is back

‘Prince of Centres’ is heading to Twickenham on Saturday with a group of pals, thrilled by his team’s revival and unfazed by underdog status

Jeremy Guscott

On his coach from Bath to Twickenham on Saturday for the Premiership final against Northampton Saints , Jeremy Guscott says he will be accompanied by five close friends, some of whom he has played rugby with since the age of 11.

“We all played for Bath at different levels, three of us played Bath Colts together, and some of us for the thirds, seconds and some first-team rugby,” he says. “It is going to be great, win or lose, it is going to be a good time.”

The opportunity to indulge in nostalgia during the course of the three-hour drive seems appropriate.

It may be 24 years since the curtain fell on Guscott’s glittering Bath career, a career in which he won 65 caps for England and played in eight Tests for the British and Irish Lions across three tours. Yet the manner of Bath’s passage to the Premiership final this season, their first since 2015 , has turned back the years for the 58-year-old, who won six Premiership titles and one Heineken Cup having made his debut in 1984.

After many dark days – you have to go back to Guscott’s side in 1996 for the club’s last league title – the player whose grace earned him the nickname ‘Prince of Centres’, welcomes the fact that everyone in the city is talking about rugby again.

Guscott is a fan of the work undertaken since the arrival of Johann van Graan at the start of last season, and even without the insight of the coaching team’s data, it is their intent and resilience that has impressed him.

The sleeping giant, it appears, is stirring.

Lawes and Guscott

“It is incredibly exciting at the moment, there is a real buzz around,” he adds. “It is the topic of all conversations: ‘How do you think it will go? Are you going? Have you got a ticket?  Can you get me one?’

“The Bath crowd has been incredibly loyal and supportive during the fallow years and after the first half a dozen games this season the feeling was: ‘Wow, this team has really turned it around and is exciting.’

“And it has been exciting. I have probably been to watch Bath this season more times than at any time in the last 15 years. It reminds me of the rugby we played as a kid when we would say: ‘Just give me the ball and let’s go.’ At mini rugby and juniors, you played with freedom and that freedom brings enjoyment and the sense that you have given everything you can.”

One is tempted to ponder how Guscott would slot into a backline outside the mercurial genius of Finn Russell. He had his own version in Stuart Barnes and resists the temptation to compare the two eras.

‘Nobody likes watching repeated errors’

“Our experience was different, we were fortunate to win at the first attempt in the knock-out years starting in 1983-84 and the team tasted success and just wanted to keep on tasting it,” he added.

“Or you can go there and lose and come back from adversity. Finn Russell is a world-class player but there are unsung heroes too. The whole of the Bath pack has been fantastic. Look at the likes of Ted Hill, he is a warrior, he is a mountain but is quick too. Yet he kind of goes under the radar a little bit. Sam Underhill, Charlie Ewels, Tom Dunn.

“It has been a rollercoaster. Previously it was not pretty to watch at times, for a long period. Nobody likes watching repeated errors. I have been there. I know everyone was trying their hardest and it just wasn’t working.

“Some of these guys have been through a lot of hard times together and persevered and have got to where they are. They are now getting the execution right and the timing right.

‘When it is on, they attack’

“Rather than dropping off in the last 10, we have been winning games in the last 10. We used to worry if they would be able to hold on to winning positions. They are fit and they are fighting for each other. It is properly exciting to watch. When it is on, they attack. And Northampton deserve to be top of the league too with the way they have been playing.”

His anticipation is such that he was forced to forgo a pre-arranged lunch with other friends following Bath’s semi-final victory over Sale Sharks at the Rec last Saturday.

“I didn’t want to let them down but hopefully I will have a lot more lunches with those friends in the future,” he adds. “But live sport is rare, particularly when you played and supported a club for so long.

“So I am getting on the bus with some friends I have known since I was 11. Yeah, it is going to be a great day and hopefully more to come as well. Win or lose, it is a start of Bath being very competitive for the foreseeable future.”

Yes, the Prince of Centres is finally smiling again. The scent of success is back in the air at Bath. There may still be a long way to go for the club to rekindle their powerhouse days when they dominated the English game for over a decade. Northampton may go into the game as favourites with the bookmakers, but Guscott remembers the season in 1998 when Bath won the Heineken Cup despite an indifferent season.

“When we won the European Cup, we hadn’t had a particularly good season, but we finished the season with momentum and that can be critical. When you have momentum, you have to score and then you get the ball back and you have to put more pressure on again. How many times do we see a team score but then make an error from the restart and let the other team back in. You have got to capitalise on your time and the good teams do.”
