Eagles Launch Farewell Tour in New York City

Eagles kicked off their Long Goodbye farewell tour at Madison Square Garden in New York City this evening.

The night began with Steely Dan as the opening act, who played several of their hits, including "Hey Nineteen," "Dirty Work," "Reelin' in the Years" and more. (This is not the first time Steely Dan and Eagles have worked together. "[ Timothy B. Schmit ] used to help out singing backup in the ’70s,"  Donald Fagen , now the sole surviving member of Steely Dan, explained in a recent interview with  Expanding Dan , "and  Don Henley did a couple sessions as well. Because we share a manager, I’ve run into the guys now and then over the years. Good band.")

Then came Eagles, beginning with their cover of "Seven Bridges Road."

"It's been a rough six weeks for us," Henley admitted from the stage, referencing the recent passing of Eagles co-founder Randy Meisner . "Incredible musician, amazing singing voice, and we will miss him." The band then dedicated their performance of "Take It to the Limit" to Meisner.

Later in the evening, tribute was also paid to Jimmy Buffett , who passed away on Sept. 1. "Jimmy Buffett is now sailing on that cosmic ocean, having that cheeseburger with Glenn [Frey] and Randy," Henley said. "We always liked to laugh and say we survived the '70s together."

"Jimmy and I got thrown out of some of the finest hotels in the world," Joe Walsh  added.

Two Buffett covers followed: "Come Monday" and "Fins," the latter of which was sung by Walsh, who donned a colorful "parrot head" hat while doing so.

Walsh, Henley and Schmit, along with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, played a hit-heavy set list, which also included some solo material of Walsh's: "In the City," "All Night Long" and "Rocky Mountain Way."

You can view a complete set list from the concert below.

The End of the Road for Eagles

Eagles first announced this tour back in July, noting their appreciation for their management, crew and fans over the years on the road.

"We hope to see as many of you as we can before we finish up," they said in a statement at the time. "Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on."

"I think people like B.B. King set an example, which is, there's no reason to stop unless you can’t do it," Walsh elaborated not long after the announcement. "And so we’re just announcing that we’re gonna just focus on playing quality shows and slow it down a little bit. And we’re gonna play until we can’t, or play until nobody comes, whichever comes first. But they’re still coming, so why stop? That’s the only thing we know how to do."

The band currently has tour dates scheduled through Nov. 18.

Eagles to Make a ‘Long Goodbye’ With Farewell Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

The long run is coming to an end as the Eagles have announced the first set of arenas for The Long Goodbye “official farewell tour ,” beginning in September.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” the band said in a statement Thursday.

“Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

While only one show is listed per venue, the band “will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands.”

“The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round,” the Eagles added.

“So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades.”

Steely Dan will serve as the opening act on the Long Goodbye, which is expected to continue into 2025. Presale tickets for all announced shows go on sale beginning Wednesday, July 12, with a general on-sale to follow on July 14th .

The Eagles Honor Randy Meisner with Farewell Tour Setlist

by Tina Benitez-Eves September 8, 2023, 11:51 am

Fans got a first sampling of what to expect on the Eagles ‘ The Long Goodbye  farewell tour, which kicked off on Thursday (September 7) at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Videos by American Songwriter

Celebrating the band’s 50-plus year career, the 23-song setlist spanned the Eagles hits, including “Witchy Woman,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Take It Easy,” and “Heartache Tonight.”

By the fourth song, the band dedicated “Take It to the Limit,” off their breakthrough 1975 album, One of These Nights , to their late bassist Randy Meisner, who died on July 26, 2023, at age 77. Written by Meisner, late guitarist Glenn Frey , who died in 2016 at the age of 67, and Don Henley , “Take It to the Limit” went to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

[RELATED: 6 Songs Randy Meisner Wrote for the Eagles]

More than halfway into their set, the band also paid tribute to late friend and collaborator Jimmy Buffett , who died on Friday (September 1) at 76. The Eagles first met Buffett in 1975 when he opened for them with his Coral Reefer Band. Buffett later joined them on their Hotel California Tour in 1977 and sang backing vocals on “The Greeks Don’t Want No Freaks,” off the Eagles’ 1979 album  The Long Run . In 1998, Buffett also inducted the Eagles into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“Jimmy Buffett is now sailing on that cosmic ocean, having that cheeseburger with Glenn [Frey] and Randy [Meisner],” said Henley in reference to Buffett’s 1978 hit “ Cheeseburger in Paradise ,” and his late Eagles bandmates Frey and Meisner.

“We always liked to laugh and say we survived the ’70s together,” added Henley. “Jimmy was one of the hardest working men I ever saw, but he made work look like play. He brought joy to everything he did, including the work. And one of his final wishes was that we keep the party going.”

The band, now consisting of Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, and Joe Walsh , along with Vince Gill and Glenn’s son Deacon Frey, played Buffett’s 1974 song “Come Monday” and a cover of his 1979 Volcano track “Fins.”

Squeezing in some solo cuts, Walsh added in his “In The City” and “Life’s Been Good,” both later released on Eagles albums, while Henley took a few minutes to plug in his 1984 hit “Boys of Summer.”

Closing on another Hotel California hit, “Life in the Fast Lane,” the Eagles returned for a three-song encore opening on “Rocky Mountain Way,” a song Joe Walsh first recorded with his band Barnstorm in 1973 and later introduced into Eagles sets. Remaining in ’73, the band added the title track of their second album, Desperado , before closing the night on their classic “ Hotel California .”

Though the Eagles’ setlist is expected to shift as the band continues on their farewell run, which runs through November 18—with more dates expected to be added through 2024 and 2025—here’s a sampling of what to expect at one of their final shows.

Eagles rock LA homecoming for Long Goodbye tour, knock nearby 'spaceship' SoFi Stadium

eagles farewell 1 tour setlist

LOS ANGELES – "Good evening and welcome to whatever this is," Eagles founding member, drummer and singer Don Henley said to kick off the band's first 2024 concert of The Long Goodbye tour.

The seminal rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1971, checked into Hotel California again Friday for the first of four sold-out concerts at the Kia Forum for what is promised as the Eagles' final tour. Henley took pride that the four nights ending Jan. 13 will mark 26 times at the iconic 17,500-seat venue.

"We've been playing this joint for 49 years," Henley said, adding that it was the band's strong preference over the gleaming 70,000-seat SoFi Stadium just across the street.

"We could have just done one night at the spaceship next door and been done with it. But it sounds much better in here," said Henley, sending the Kia Forum crowd into a frenzy. "We prefer to work a little harder and give you a better listening experience."

The Eagles lived up to the great listening experience with Henley, 76, joining longtime guitarist Joe Walsh, 76, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, 76, along with guitarist Vince Gill , 66, who stepped in after founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey  died in 2016 at age 67. Frey's guitarist son Deacon, 31, has also rejoined the band.

Dropping into an acapella version of " Seven Bridges Road " to start the show, the Eagles proved they can still harmonize with startling beauty, following that up with hit-after-hit including "One of These Nights," "Lyin' Eyes," "Best of My Love" and "New Kid in Town."

The Eagles Long Goodbye: See the setlist for the legendary rock band's final tour

Songwriter J.D. Souther, who Henley said played a "critical role" in writing the latter two mega-Eagles hits, among others, made frequent stage appearances, including handling lead vocals in "New Kid in Town," duties once performed by the late Frey.

Deacon Frey, propped up sunglasses holding back his long black hair, handled his father's lead vocal duties on "Peaceful Easy Feeling," a pitch-perfect nostalgic rendition that ended with the stage screens showing a black-and-white photo of the smiling late Eagles founder.

Henley continued to pay concert tribute to Jimmy Buffett , dedicating his solo song "Boys of Summer" to "our dear friend" who died in September at 76.

Walsh held claim to his place as the Clown Prince of Rock by vamping onstage after a retro introduction from Schmidt as "the irreplaceable, the undeniable, the Master of the Stratocaster." Walsh proved worthy of the plaudits, pulling off power guitar solos in songs such as his hit "Life's Been Good."

But Walsh has slightly adapted to the times, changing the line in his ode to spoiled rock stars from "They write me letters, tell me I'm great" to "They write me emails, tell me I'm great."

By the time the band kicked into the classic road anthem "Already Gone," it was clear the Eagles are in fighting shape after performing the tour since kicking off Sept. 7 at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

"How we doing?" Henley asked after the song ended. "We've been practicing."

As promised in the title, The Long Goodbye will continue through 2025.

How is Donald Fagen from Steely Dan?

Fagen, 75, rejoined The Long Goodbye and opened the show Friday with Steely Dan after being hospitalized for an unspecified illness in October. Fagen thanked the audience for the enthusiastic response to Steely Dan's classic song "My Old School."

"It's my first show of the year, and you're making it nice," Fagen said.

After playing "Reelin' In the Years," Fagen paid tribute to fellow band founder Walter Becker, who died in 2017 at 67.

"I want to thank Walter Becker for helping me write all of these tunes," said Fagen.

Music | Review: Dead & Company opens Sphere Las Vegas residency in epic fashion

Dead & company playing 24-show residency.

The state-of-the-art concert venue Sphere in Las Vegas is hosting Dead & Company through July 13.

Yes, even the famed LSD guru — who was also the sound engineer for the Grateful Dead and the architect for the band’s fabled “Wall of Sound,” before dying in 2011 — could never have dreamed up the full-force psychedelic-rock experience that was awaiting fans on opening night of Dead & Company’s “Dead Forever” run at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Thursday.

They watched giant terrapins play instruments, rode about with a skeleton in patriotic garb on a motorcycle and matched moves with dancing bears.

Oh, yeah, and the music was pretty swell as well, as this phenomenally popular Grateful Dead offshoot — consisting of Dead alum Bob Weir on vocals and guitar, and Mickey Hart on drums, as well as vocalist-guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummer Jay Lane — rolled through 19 songs during two very generous sets.

They took the stage right at 7:35 p.m. — just five minutes after the printed start time — and were still going strong nearly four hours later.

It was a great way to mark the return to the stage for Dead & Company, the Bay Area-rooted jam band that ended its blockbuster 2023 farewell tour with three sold-out shows at Oracle Park in San Francisco in July.

It was also the first of 24 nights that the band is scheduled to perform at the Sphere, which has quickly become arguably Las Vegas’ defining landmark as the dome pulses with amazing video imagery that can be seen from miles away. Fittingly, it was showing the Dead’s signature “steal your face” skull logo, as well as other graphics, as fans walked up to the building on Thursday.

“Dead Forever” is the second residency to be held at this $2 billion venue, which opened with an epic run by U2 in September . Overall, Dead & Company is the third act to play public concerts there — with fellow jam band Phish having taken the Sphere stage for four shows back in April.

So what’s Dead & Co. doing playing shows so soon after selling hundreds of thousands of tickets on its farewell tour?

Well, technically speaking, the band was just saying farewell to touring — and the Sphere residency isn’t really a tour. So, the band is just grooving right through that loophole and straight to the bank as it performs shows, mostly on weekends, right through July 13 ( deadandcompany.com ).

Dead & Company perform on May 16 at the Sphere in Las Vegas. (Jim Harrington, Bay Area News Group)

The 18,000-or-so fans in attendance certainly weren’t worrying about semantics or technicalities as they enjoyed hearing such longtime favorites as “Jack Straw,” “Bird Song” and “Brown-Eyed Women” during what turned out to be a relatively mellow — musically speaking — first set.

Following a half-hour break, the group turned up the heat in the second set with a powerful jam through the longtime musical partners “Help on the Way,” “Slipknot!” and “Franklin’s Tower,” with the latter third arguably being the musical highpoint of the overall show.

The graphics were downright intoxicating and, quite often, disorienting — as the eyes tried to make sense of what was pretty much nonstop sensory overload.

There were some points where I felt a bit dizzy, and even had a touch of motion sickness, as I tried in vain to take in everything that was happening across the towering video screens as the band continued through “He’s Gone,” “Standing on the Moon” and “St. Stephen.”

The downside of being bombarded with all these special effects — and, well, just the massive amount of light — is that it’s really easy to literally lose sight of the actual musicians. They become, visually speaking, afterthoughts to everything that is going on.

Yet, there were points where everything jelled so nicely, such as when the group returned once again to outer space for a poignant version of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and then closed the epic show with a triumphant run through Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.”

The Sphere truly delivers a concert experience like none other. And there are very few, if any, bands that seem a better fit for what this venue can offer than Dead & Co.

Setlist: 1. “Feel Like a Stranger” 2. “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” 3. “Jack Straw” 4. “Bird Song” 5. “Me and My Uncle” 6. “Brown-Eyed Women” 7. “Cold Rain and Snow” Set 2: 8. “Uncle John’s Band” 9. “Help on the Way” 10. “Slipknot!” 11. “Franklin’s Tower” 12. “He’s Gone” 13. “Drums” 14. “Space” 15. “Standing on the Moon” 16. “St. Stephen” 17. “Hell in a Bucket” 18. “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” 19. “Not Fade Away”

Steven Tyler Joins the Black Crowes Onstage in London Months After Fracturing Larynx

T he Aerosmith frontman fractured his larynx in September 2023, forcing his band to reschedule dates for the remainder of their Peace Out farewell tour

  • On Wednesday, May 15, Steven Tyler performed onstage with the Black Crowes for the first time since recovering from fracturing his larynx in September 2023
  • The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's injury forced his band, Aerosmith, to postpone dates for their Peace Out farewell tour
  • The tour is set to resume in September with a new set of dates

Steven Tyler is on the mend and back to performing after fracturing his larynx last year.

The Aerosmith frontman, 76, joined the legendary rock band the Black Crowes onstage for a surprise performance at London’s Eventim Apollo on Wednesday, May 15, his first since sustaining a vocal cord injury that forced his band to pause their Peace Out farewell tour in 2023.

“If it is alright with y’all, we wanna play one more song,” Crowes frontman Chris Robinson said while introducing Tyler, per SPIN . “We wanna dedicate it to somebody who is a dear friend and a hero and a legend, Mr. Steven Tyler. We will be touring with Aerosmith soon, so we wanna play one of his songs.”

Tyler and the band then closed out the show by tearing into a cover of the 1973 Aerosmith classic, “Mama Kin.” The former looked rather lively as he performed, seemingly back in good health and ready to hit the road again following months of recovery.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer also posed for a photo with the Black Crowes, plus Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, where he was all smiles. “Rock Royalty Reigned last night at the #HappinessBastardsTour at the @eventimapollo in London. @iamstevent @jimmypage @aerosmith @ledzeppelin,” the band captioned an Instagram post .

Back in February, Tyler shared an update on his vocal injury while hosting his fifth annual Jam for Janie Grammys viewing party — which benefits his non-profit Janie's Fund, created to help girls who have experienced abuse and neglect.

"My throat's been better, but it is on the mend," he told attendees. "And out of all things, I've decided to take the advice not from my doctors, but from the girls at Janie's house."

In May 2023, Aerosmith confirmed rumors of a farewell tour by announcing Peace Out , an originally scheduled, 40-city North American concert run celebrating their monumental career.

"After 50 years, 10 world tours and playing for over 100 million fans, it's time for one last go," a release said of the news. Bandmates Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, and Brad Whitford added in a joint statement, "It's not goodbye it's PEACE OUT!”

The announcement continued, “Get ready and walk this way, you're going to get the best show of our lives."

By mid-September 2023, a few weeks after Aerosmith’s tour kicked off in Philadelphia , the Rock in a Hard Place band revealed that Tyler had received doctor’s orders “not to sing for the next 30 days,” which forced them to postpone a handful of scheduled shows that month in Detroit, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Cleveland to 2024.

In a since-deleted Instagram statement posted at the beginning of the month, Tyler shared, “I sustained vocal cord damage during Saturday’s show that led to subsequent bleeding. We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.”

But things only got worse for the "Angel" artist from there, as it was later revealed that he’d fractured his larynx, forcing Aerosmith to pause their farewell tour altogether.

“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought,” the “Sweet Emotion” rockers wrote in a statement on social media later that month. “His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care.”

They continued, “He is receiving the best medical treatment available to ensure his recovery is swift, but given the nature of a fracture, he is being told patience is essential."

Tyler closed out the announcement by telling fans, “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world. I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Shows for the Peace Out tour have since been rescheduled. In April, Aerosmith announced a new set of dates that will resume later this year and run until January 2025.

Tyler’s vocal cord injury comes after he entered a treatment program amid a relapse in May 2022 after undergoing foot surgery to prepare for his band’s Deuces Are Wild Las Vegas residency . The “Dream On” singer’s health issues affected that slate of shows as well, as the band was forced to cancel shows that December.

In a statement, Tyler updated fans on his health and said, "On the advice of my doctor, I'm taking more time to rest. There is nowhere we'd rather be than on stage surrounded by the greatest fans in the world."
