Sea Fishing in Side tour will help brighten up your holiday days and bring a positive, unforgettable experience. Early in the morning a comfortable bus will pick you up at your hotel. We will head for the pier, where a specialised boat, under the guidance of an experienced captain, will be waiting for us.

The boat is sonar equipped, so during the day we will change the location several times following the fish shoals. If the fish is big enough to catch, the ship’s chef will cook it for you on board. You’ll be back at the hotel around 13:00.

All tackle, baits, both transfers (to and from the hotel), as well as breakfast, tea, coffee and water are included in the price of the tour. We recommend booking in advance.

What to Remember

Fishing is allowed in Turkey for tourists without fishing permits. Bring sunscreen lotion.  Most boats will be at sea for several hours. Even on cloudy days the sun reflects off the ocean, making sunburns a serious possibility. Apply and reapply high-SPF waterproof sunscreen to help protect yourself from sun damage. Prepare for sea sickness.  The ocean can make the boat very rocky. If you begin to feel sick, stay on the deck, where there is fresh air and less rocking. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medicine before boarding. If you already know you're prone to motion sickness, take half a Dramamine the night before and another one an hour before or so before you get on the boat. Keep your eyes on the horizon while you're out, because it's stationary and it will help you from getting motion sickness. Bring water.  Be sure to drink plenty of water, because the rays of the sun reflect off the water which can make the day even hotter making you lose liquids faster. Any motion sickness effects will be emphasized when you're dehydrated, and you'll feel a lot better if you drink plenty of water. It's common to drink  alcohol  on certain fishing trips, but make sure you supplement any alcohol you're drinking with plenty of water. In bright sun, you can get dehydrated quickly and could wake up to a serious hangover the next day if you're not careful. Not to mention that alcohol will lower your hand-eye-coordination, making you a less safe fisherman. Moderate your drinking and have plenty of water. At the fishing boat the prices for drinks are quite affordable. please do not bring your drinks from your hotel.

Experienced guides will teach you the subtleties of snorkeling and show you the best fishing spots in one of the four Turkish seas. Sincere emotions and getting a new skill is the key to a successful holiday.

Fishing in Turkey – this is a real trend, which is supported by the favorable location of the country and the opportunity to catch a really rich catch. This is possible due to the fact that the country is surrounded by as many as four seas, in each of which you can catch completely different types of fish. And convenient trips from experienced anglers will be an excellent tool in teaching such a gentle and interesting skill.

Shore fishing in Turkey

The most popular type of holiday in sunny Turkey – This is, of course, shore fishing. You can make a small picnic near the water and go fishing from the beach, or you can rent a yacht and go to conquer the endless expanses of water. The catch of clients will depend on the time of year, the day and the choice of places for a good bite. Fortunately, fishing guides know the best places to fish and are ready to share the secrets of a generous catch.

The best fishing in Turkey takes place in the season from September to March, during the period of mass migration of fish. Amateur fishermen do not need a fishing permit if fishing takes place in permitted areas and with the use of amateur tackle.

Sea fishing in Turkey

Traditionally, for successful sea fishing in Turkey, you should go to sea early in the morning from 5:00 to 7:00 hours. All tackle, sports rods, special spinning and trolling rods and even echo sounders will already be on board, so you can immediately start hunting for fish.

Turkey deep-sea fishing

In the picturesque Mediterranean Sea, vacationers from such tourist cities as Antalya, Belek, Side and Kemer can hope to succeed in the extraction of red mullet, bluefish, mackerel, zuban and golden pagra. And if you order big game deep-sea fishing in Istanbul , which is gaining popularity, you can even catch swordfish!

Fish we can catch in the seas of Turkey

It is worth considering the seasonality of sea fishing in Turkey, because mackerel, for example, becomes especially tasty only in August. Anchovy, bops, mullet, sardine and perch can be caught in the Aegean Sea, with special attention to be paid to the famous Saros Gulf in the northern part of the sea. The Sea of Marmara is rich in bonito, bluefish, mussels, shrimp and crabs, and Fishing in Turkey in the Black Sea gives a catch of sea bass, red mullet, gurnard and bops.

Fishermen everywhere love to be out in nature, surrounded by birdsong and fishing, to the soothing sound of water lapping over rocks.

With four seas surrounding Turkey and numerous rivers and lakes, Turkey is calling your name.

This beautiful country offers an escape from reality that’s hard to find anywhere else. There are rivers, lakes, and seas full of fish just waiting to be caught – something sure to excite any angler.

Today, we’ll share the insider scoop to help you plan your trip to Turkey for your next big catch.

Fantastic fishing awaits! It’s only a matter of time before you experience that indescribable high of hook-setting something wild.

In this article, we’ll cover everything about fishing in Turkey:

  • What are the top fish to catch in Turkey
  • Learn where the best places to fish
  • We’ll tell you where they are and how to catch them.

Top Fish To Catch In Turkey

bluefish

Fish in Turkish waters are as diverse as the landscape. You can expect to find bass, bream, catfish, trout, carp, bluefish, perch, mackerel, sea bass, and pike, to name a few.

Also, there are abundant big game fish, such as tuna, swordfish, and marlin. Mentally prepare yourself – and your forearms – to square off against these Turkish maritime beasts!

Best Freshwater Fish To Catch In Turkey?

One of the most popular types of fishing in Turkey is freshwater fishing. These fish can be caught in rivers and lakes all over the country:

Best Saltwater Fish To Catch In Turkey?

There is ample offshore and inshore saltwater fishing if you want a bigger challenge. The Mediterranean and Aegean seas are home to some of the biggest fish in the world, and you’re sure to catch a monster if you head out on one of these trips.

Where To Go Fishing In Turkey?

Koycegiz Lake

The waters around the country will make you feel alive again. There’s a unique spot just waiting to be explored, and we’ll help you find it.

Leave the hot city behind for a few days and head out into nature or onto a boat where you can let the worries of the world melt away.

These are some of the best places to fish in Turkey:

Carp Fishing In Koycegiz Lake

Koycegiz Lake near Dalyan has some very big carp. It is popular for many European anglers to go there for fishing holidays in the summer months.

Many anglers aim to fish for common carp in this naturally protected lake. The reported number of carp is more than over sixty thousand! Over the past few years, the authorities have released an additional 180.000 small carp into the Lake of Koycegiz.

The lake holds plenty of carp, up to an enormous 120 lbs! But also holds Wels Catfish, Flathead Grey Mullet, European Eel, Gilthead Sea Bream, Sea Bass, Fresh Water Tilapia, and Dwarf Goby.

You can fish from a boat or the bank. There are multiple fishing areas around the huge lake to choose from.

An angler who plans to catch fish for non-commercial purposes with small-scale fishing gear does not require a fishing license; however, please ensure that you only fish in the allowed areas.

Fishing The Bosphorus

One of the most famous places in the world to go fishing is the Bosphorus Strait. This narrow stretch of water connects the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and is home to various fish. You can find saltwater and freshwater fish here and big game fish like tuna and marlin.

If you’re looking for a challenge, this is a great place to go, but be prepared for some crowds – the Bosphorus is one of Turkey’s most popular fishing spots!

Sitting between Europe and Asia, this is one of the best places to drop your line if you’re looking for bluefish.

Fishing here never gets old – and neither does that feeling we all love. There’s something special – primal even – about outwitting a fish, bringing it on the boat, and then getting to eat your catch.

Fishing In The Marmara Sea

You may find yourself waking at the crack of dawn, lacing up your boots, and throwing your gear on your back, ready to hit the Marmara Sea. Early in the morning, you will see the horizon dotted with boats while you breathe salt-laden air.

The Marmara Sea is one of Turkey’s largest seas located east of the Bosphorus Strait. Known as “The Black Sea’s Garden,” its nutrient-rich waters span an area of 7,200 square kilometres and offer anglers the chance to fish for mackerel, red mullet, sea bass, grouper, bonito tuna, and the Marmara perch.

Fishing The Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea is a vast, open body of water with few natural boundaries but plenty of fish. The surrounding coasts are rich in fishing villages, each home to unique cuisine and culture. It’s not as deep as the Atlantic but has just as much allure.

The Mediterranean Sea is home to tuna, swordfish, marlin, barracuda, amberjack, and red mullet. There are also abundant sea bass, mackerel, grouper, and bonito.

The sea bass is known to have quite an attitude – the kind where if you don’t strike into your bites quick enough – they’ll spit whatever bait you are using straight back out. They don’t mess around!

Fishing The Black Sea

You can’t find more heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping, on the edge of your seat fishing than on the Black Sea. These are some of the most dangerous waters on Earth to fish in for many reasons.

The Black Sea is home to many different fish species, including those living in salt and freshwater.

Perhaps the most famous is the Black Sea Bass. This is a particularly sought-after fish because it’s both hardy and delicious. It can be found in the Black Sea, Aegean, and Mediterranean Seas.

Black sea salmon and brown trout are especially prevalent in the Black Sea, where they make their home in the many tributaries that flow into it. Both fish are a popular angler target because they fight fiercely and provide a great meal.

Fishing At Abant Gölü – Abant Lake

abant lake

Abant Lake is a very popular vacation destination and a very scenic area. The 316-acre freshwater lake is inside the 2,800-acre Abant Nature Park and was formed by a landslide.

The lake sits at an altitude of 1,328 m (4,357 ft), is easily accessible by car, and is located 32 km (20 mi) from the city of Bolu. Istanbul and Ankara are a three-hour car ride away.

Lake Abant is a natural lake inside one of Turkey’s greenest and most largely forested areas.

The lake has a breed of endemic trout called the Abant trout, which is a subspecies of brown trout.

The country’s first fish hatchery is here to help sustain the well-known Abant trout. Anglers, both local and foreign, target these trout.

When To Go On A Fishing Vacation In Turkey

To get a feel for local life and culture in this picturesque country, you should travel from September to December – the primary fishing season. Bluefin tuna can be caught in December and January in the Marmara Sea.

The main fishing season in the Strait of Istanbul or the Bosphorus is September to December. Bonito, bluefish, and bluefin tuna are always in abundance.

Tourists are encouraged to fish from a boat or from shoreline spots where you can prepare and cook your own catch; there’s no better way of experiencing what life here entails than trying it yourself!

Fishing is illegal during breeding seasons in some areas, but not all types of fish are subject to these restrictions. The ban generally lasts from 1st April to 1st September.

These restrictions can be subject to change, so it’s recommended that you speak to local operators before you book your travel.

Best Methods To Catch Fish In Turkey

Fishing is an extremely popular sport in Turkey. Many of the fishing methods used in this country are traditional and often draw on ancient techniques that date back to when the first people started catching fish for food.

The most common types of fishing in Turkey are:

• Deep Sea Fishing

• Fly Fishing for trout

• Freshwater Bottom for carp and catfish

How To Book Your Vacation Fishing Trip To Turkey

If you’re interested in a fishing trip to Turkey, all that stands between your adventure to this beautiful country is booking one of my recommended trips below! These fishing excursions will take care of everything to ensure an unforgettable experience.

Lake Abant has only a few hotels nearby and a couple of campgrounds along the shoreline. The best hotel is the 5-star Taksim International Abant Köşk, which overlooks the lake, has beautiful scenery and is right next to the best fishing areas.

For a family fishing trip, I recommend excursion mania. They have a great family half-day trip from Side. Side is a city on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

Captain Ozay’s Sport Fishing in Oludeniz Fethiye offers a fishing trip for swordfish and multiple activities for families.

Turkey’s Fishing Regulations

It is illegal to fish in Turkey without a license. Fishing permits are not required in certain areas and depend on what you’re fishing and where, but it’s always advisable to ask (and be sure).

For more details on the Turkey fishing license requirements, check out the website Angloinfo fishing in Turkey .

11 Places to Fly Fish in Idaho: Maps Included

Roughly 40 percent of Idaho is covered in National Forest; that translates into 20.4 million acres that are crisscrossed by creeks and rivers full of healthy fish. Originally explored by Lewis and Clark more than two hundred years ago, Idaho is home to some of the finest dry fly fisheries in the world.

Whether you are looking to catch a 24 inch rainbow trout on a salmon fly or prefer exploring remote freestone rivers full of native cutthroat, Idaho has it all.

Catching Rainbow Trout with Egg Patterns

1. Teton River, World Class Fly Fishing

Located outside of Victor in eastern Idaho, the Teton River offers some of the finest fly fishing and scenery that the state has to offer. The river runs along the Wyoming-Idaho border under the magnificent Teton Range, and it is home to good populations of rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, cutbows and brook trout.

The upper Teton River is a meandering river that offers exceptional dry fly fishing, while the lower section runs through a wild canyon and is home to some monster cutthroat trout. The relatively steady water temps on the upper stretch of the river result in consistent hatches and big healthy fish. You can wade the Teton River, but floating it in a drift boat or even from a stand up paddle board is usually more effective.

Where to Fish the Teton River

The upper stretch of the Teton River is mellow enough that it can be fished from drift boats and paddle boards. There is great access along the Teton River, but my favorite place to start my float is from Packsaddle/Cache Bridge. This access point is not as crowded as some of the other boat ramps. Head north out of Driggs on Highway 33, and then turn left on 4000 North/Packsaddle Rd. You will cross the river and then the boat ramp will be on your left.

The drift from here to Harrop Bridge is approximately three hours.

Recommended Flies for the Teton River

Stonefly Pattern

  • Purple Chubby, Size 8. The Purple Chubby is deadly on the Teton River. If purple isn’t your color, try a tan foam/orange belly chubby or a tan foam/red belly chubby.

There are plenty of large terrestrials flying around on the Teton River, it is all about trying different color combinations until you find one they can’t resist.

  • Stimulator, Size 8-14. The water temps on the upper Teton River provide great habitat for insect life, and there are a lot of stoneflies around. Make sure you have green, orange, and black Stimulators.
  • Grey Drake. If you visit the Teton in September, make sure you bring your drake box. The hatch is phenomenal.
  • Flashback Pheasant Tail, Size 14-18. Although you don’t need to drop a nymph behind your dry fly, it usually results in a couple more fish throughout the day. It is hard to beat a pheasant tail because it looks a little bit like everything.

2. Henrys Lake, Trophy Fly Fishing

Located at the headwaters of the Henrys Fork, Henrys Lake offers some of the finest stillwater fishing in Idaho. The lake is just over 6000 acres, but it is relatively shallow. The shallow nature of this lake leads to plenty of vegetation on the bottom, and everything from leeches to sculpins to baitfish love to hide in this vegetation.

Cutthroat Trout

The lake is regularly stocked with brook trout , cutthroat trout and cutbow trout. Some of the larger cutbows in the lake are over 25 inches, and the lake is famous in the region for high catch rate. Henrys Lake also supports an incredible variety of birds including swans, herons, and pelicans.

Where to Fish Henrys Lake

Although there is a lot of private water surrounding the lake, there are a couple good access points. Henrys Lake State Park is located on the south side of the lake, and offers campsites, hiking, and a boat ramp. Although you can fish the lake from the shore, a float tube or canoe is definitely going to be more effective. The road to the park is located about eight miles outside of West Yellowstone on Highway 20.

Henrys Lake State Park

Recommended Flies for Henrys Lake

Bunny Leech Fly Pattern

  • Leeches, Size 4-12. Henrys Lake is full of leeches, and the fish gobble them up. My favorite colors are red/black or black. Fish these leeches on a floating line. Let the leech sink a little bit and then retrieve with slow steady strips. Change the depth and speed of retrieve until you start hooking up consistently.
  • Baitfish patterns, Size 4-8. Baitfish patterns like Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow or Clouser Minnows can be very effective. A sink tip line helps keep these flies where you want them in the water column. Green/white or red/black clousers are my favorite.
  • Scuds. Size 12. Occasionally the fish key in on scuds, and it can make for some really fun fishing. Fish scuds with a floating line and try a series of short, quick strips followed by a pause. Don’t be afraid to give a bit of a strip set once you feel the take.

3. Silver Creek, Fly Fishing Bugs Abound

Silver Creek is located about 30 miles south of Sun Valley, and it is home to massive fish and epic hatches. This meandering spring creek is home to both rainbow trout and brown trout. The average fish is around 15 inches, but brown trout that tip the scales at 9 pounds are caught here every year.

A nice brown trout caught on a size 20 midge

The reason to visit Silver Creek is to witness and fish the incredible mayfly hatches that regularly pop off. When the mayflies start flying, the flat waters of this creek start to boil with feeding fish. During these hatches, even the big fish leave their haunts to feed on the surface. The fish that live in these gin-clear waters are smart and healthy, and thus it is vitally important to match the hatch and get a good drift to rising fish.

Where to Fish Silver Creek

There is a lot of public access along Silver Creek. The Nature Conservancy manages a preserve on Silver Creek just west of Picabo, and this is a fly fishing only section. You can wade fish Silver Creek, but the easy grade of this river is well suited to fishing from a float tube.

I like to put in at Kilpatrick Bridge. To get to the bridge, head northwest out of Picabo on Highway 20, and after three miles start looking for Kilpatrick Bridge Rd. Take a left on this road and then follow it for a mile. Once you cross the creek you will see the parking areas on the west and east side of the road.

There is a lot of private land along Silver Creek, so make sure you plan your float accordingly.

Recommended Flies for Silver Creek

  • BWOs , Size 16-22. There are Blue Wing Olive hatches on Silver Creek throughout the year. I like BWOs tied with CDC feathers, or the Last Chance Cripple BWO.
  • Midges, Size 18-22. Midges hatch throughout the year on Silver Creek. Some days there can be three or four hatches going on, but the fish will only eat midges.
  • Terrestrials, Size 8-12. Fishing terrestrials like grasshoppers or beetles can be very productive during breezy days in August and September. Cover plenty of water and you will find eager fish.
  • Scuds, Size 10-14. Silver Creek is full of scuds, and thus it is best to carry a couple just in case. There is a lot of vegetation on the bottom, so try and sight fish so that you don’t spend your precious afternoon picking weeds off your fly.

4. Big Wood River

The Big Wood River is a classic freestone river that is located in Central Idaho. Fishing regulations implemented into 1992 have been very effective in establishing healthy fish populations. The river is dependent on snowpack, but usually it clears by mid to late June. There are incredible stonefly, caddis, and mayfly hatches.

Read how to setup a Dry Fly with a Nymph Dropper in this article. Setting up a Dry Dropper Rig This setup doubles the amount of water your flies cover.

My favorite way to fish the Big Wood River is with a hopper-dropper rig. I usually fish a Stimulator or small terrestrial pattern on top, and then drop a Pheasant Tail or Bloody Mary behind it. A four or five weight rod is perfect for the Big Wood River.

5. north fork coeur d’alene river.

The North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River is a remote dry fly fishing paradise. The primary species in the river is Westslope Cutthroat Trout. The Coeur d’Alene River Road follows the river, and the fishing and the solitude only get better the farther you drive. The fish in the North Fork are opportunistic hunters and will eat just about anything buggy that is presented correctly.

Fluorocarbon tippet and 9ft leaders are a must when fishing this gin-clear water, but a good drift is just as important. Read how to make your own leader in this article – How to Make a Fly Fishing Leader . If you know where a fish is holding, cast above them and make the necessary mends until you know your fly is going to drift perfectly through the danger zone. Fish your favorite terrestrial like a Super Beetle and tie a red or black Copper John off the back of it.

6. Henry’s Fork

The Henry’s Fork is one of the finest dry fly fishing destinations in the world. Rainbow trout and cutthroat trout populate the upper stretches of the river, and you will start to find brown trout beneath Mesa Falls. The salmon fly hatch that usually runs from mid-May to mid-June offers anglers the opportunity to catch 25+ inch fish on dry flies.

Watching one of these monsters sip a salmon fly out of a riffle is the stuff dreams are made of. If you go in the fall, make sure to bring plenty of BWOs and a half dozen of your favorite streamers. The Henry’s Fork is best fished from a drift boat with a five or six weight rod.

7. Salmon River

The Salmon River is unique because it represents the opportunity to catch steelhead and chinook salmon 800 miles from the ocean. The steelhead fishing is best in the winter and spring, while the fall is best for chinook salmon. During the summer, fly fishing on the Salmon River for smallmouth bass and resident brown trout can be very productive.

Fly Fishing for Steelhead

The Salmon River is usually fished from a drift boat, but the river is well suited for wade fishing as well. If you are targeting steelhead, make sure you have egg patterns, egg sucking leeches, and some flashier intruder style flies as well.

8. Hayden Lake

Hayden Lake is located in Kootenai County and is roughly 3,800 acres and it has over 40 miles of coastline. Hayden Lake is a great fishery with a wide array of fishing opportunities. Fly fisherman can chase everything from rainbow trout to northern pike to largemouth bass.

Rainbow trout and Kokanee salmon are regularly stocked in Hayden Lake, and there are generous limits on Kokanee. If you are fishing for Kokanee, a couple conehead marabou leech patterns wouldn’t hurt. The simpler the better, and make sure you have them in white, red, and orange.

9. South Fork of the Boise River

The Boise River is located in southwestern Idaho, and it offers countless miles of access. The Boise River has three forks, but the South Fork of the Boise River is home to some huge rainbow trout and bull trout. The South Fork beneath Anderson Ranch Reservoir is tailwater fishery that supports fantastic bug life and the fish are huge.

San Juan Worm and Squirmy Worm

Regulations on the South Fork require anglers to use one barbless hook and artificial lures are the only legal method of take. In terms of flies, bring a couple leeches, some big terrestrial patterns, and a couple BWOs. If you are going in the winter, RS2s, Disco Midges and Top Secret Midges are deadly. Always bring a San Juan Worm too, just don’t tell my dad that it was my idea.

10. Warm River

The Warm River is a spring-fed river located just outside of Yellowstone National Park. This river is only 26 miles long, but it offers virtually unlimited access because most of it is located within the Targhee National Forest.

My favorite section is the canyon section which can be accessed by following the river upstream from the Warm Springs Campground area. The access on this river is virtually unlimited, and the fishing usually gets better the farther you are willing to walk.

A 9ft 4wt rod is perfect for this river, and I usually fish a terrestrial pattern with a flashback pheasant tail behind it. Although the hopper-dropper rig is deadly, make sure you have a couple caddis patterns and a couple BWOs as well.

11. Little Wood River

Pouring out of the Pioneer Mountains is the Little Wood River. The section above Little Wood Reservoir is a small freestone river that offers great fly fishing for beginners. The section below the reservoir is known as the desert stretch, and while the fishing is more difficult there are much bigger fish in this stretch.

BWOs , tailwater midges , big terrestrials, and streamers are all great on this stretch, it just depends on what is coming off the water. Fishing for aggressive brown trout and acrobatic rainbow trout in the high desert is hard to beat, but make sure that you look out for rattlesnakes during the summer.

Recommended Gear for Fly Fishing in Idaho

Idaho is home to towering mountain ranges, high deserts, and lush lowlands. The bottom line is that the weather can change quickly in the Rockies, so planning ahead with a rain jacket and extra layer is always important. For most of the rivers and lakes in Idaho, a 9ft 5wt rod will suffice.

Read all about everything you could possibly take on a fly fishing trip in this article. The Ultimate Beginner Fly Fishing Checklist . Plus this article has a download list provided FREE.

In terms of dry flies, you always want to have a good selection of BWOs, stoneflies, PMDs and a caddis or two. When it comes to nymphs, I always make sure to carry a couple spring creek patterns like RS2s and Disco Midges as well as generic fishy patterns like Pheasant Tails and Copper Johns.

Like most rivers in the Rockies, a hopper-dropper rig is usually pretty deadly during the summer and fall months.

The secret side of the Mediterranean – by boat in Turkey

Editor’s Note: This CNN Travel series is, or was, sponsored by the country it highlights. CNN retains full editorial control over subject matter, reporting and frequency of the articles and videos within the sponsorship, in compliance with our policy .

Fringed by mountains, Turkey’s southern Aegean coast is dotted with lively resorts and quaint quays in sleepy villages, pine-backed beaches, and translucent bays studded with ancient ruins.

With summer meltemi winds filling your sails, it’s one of the world’s best regions for a holiday afloat. You can spend your days exploring secluded swimming spots, enjoying long lunches on vine-covered terraces lapped by clear waters, and your nights mooring up under the stars in magical coves, many of which are only accessible by boat.

So whether you’re a seasoned yachtie or happier lounging on the deck of a luxury gullet (Turkey’s traditional-style motor sailing yachts) or even just a traveler keen on day trips on the water, here are some spots worth checking out on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast.

Gulf of Gökova

Starting from the increasingly stylish fishing town of Yalıkavak on the northwest tip of the Bodrum peninsula (and its ultra-modern marina), head south to Gümüşlük.

The quay of this small, sheltered bay opposite the Greek island of Kalymnos is lined with restaurants offering mezes, fresh fish, octopus, calamari and Turkish staples such as lahmacun (Turkish pizza), kofte and kebabs, all washed down with raki, the national drink.

Mimoza is an upmarket option with homemade lanterns hanging from the trees and whitewashed rafters, while Fenerci , overlooking little Tavşan Ada (Rabbit Island) in the entrance to the bay, has been serving local seafood since 1979.

Sailing further south, you enter the Gulf of Gökova, which resembles the open mouth of a crocodile – with the Datça Peninsula as the lower jaw and the Greek island of Kos about to be gobbled up.

The 60-mile gulf is home to cosmopolitan Bodrum, dubbed the “St. Tropez of Turkey,” but there are plentiful nooks and crannies to discover away from the crowds.

East of Bodrum, Orak island is a good spot for diving and snorkeling – the water is so clear it looks like it could have been piped from the Maldives. Further east is sleepy Çökertme, a fishing village and carpet-weaving community backed by mountains and swathed in pine, almond and olive trees.

Jetties jut into the emerald water enticing boat crews to dine at the small tavernas, including Captain Ibrahim’s and Rosemary Restaurant . Rooms are available at both.

Continuing further east into the gulf is hidden-away Akbük Limani, a serene east-facing bay with a pebbly beach lapped by teal water. It’s the perfect place for a pine-scented dip at dawn, followed by a breakfast onshore of thick coffee or çay, Turkish tea served in tulip-shaped glasses.

On the south side of the gulf, Sedir Island is home to Cleopatra Beach where, according to legend, the Egyptian queen and her beau Mark Antony swam. The romantic Roman is said to have imported the sand here from North Africa for her, and experts have confirmed it’s not typical of the region. Ruins of the ancient city of Kedrai (“Cedar Tree”) – which dates back to the sixth century BCE – add to the timeless ambiance.

To the southwest lies Değirmen Bükü, or English Harbour, so named because British naval vessels hid here during World War II. It’s another tranquil spot with several smaller coves to explore and a wooden jetty to reach a couple of rustic restaurants shaded by trees.

Further west, the Yedi Adalari (“Seven Islands”) are a string of uninhabited islets and reefs offering sublime swimming and snorkeling with a brilliant backdrop of blue and green from the pine-clad slopes.

On the southwestern tip of the gulf, at the end of the Datça Peninsula, lies the ancient Greek city of Knidos, once a significant trading port. You can stroll among the ruins of temples, including the Temple of Aphrodite, two theaters, a marketplace and old harbor.

Its sheltered aquamarine bay is an enduring setting for evening cocktails onboard, with views over to the south shore of Kos. Meanwhile, Knidos Restaurant is the solitary taverna at this meeting point of the Aegean and the Mediterranean.

Gulf of Hisarönü

Like the open pincers of a crab about to seize the Greek isle of Simi, the Hisarönü Gulf to the south of the Gulf of Gökova is bordered by an ageless landscape of rocky outcrops, hillsides, coves and crumbling ruins – accompanied by wild goats and the scents of thyme, rosemary, sage and pine.

The main draw is cutesy Datça, with its buzzy harborfront bars and restaurants. Its enchanting old town (Eski Datça) has been rejuvenated in recent decades and is a hive of cobbled streets, bougainvillea-covered cafes and chic shops selling local arts and crafts. A few streets back from the water, restaurant Eski Meyhane is a good spot – the grilled octopus is a specialty.

Across the gulf on its own peninsula is pretty waterfront town Bozburun, known for its thyme honey, sponge fishing and traditional boat builders.

Sleepy Selimiye, with its Byzantine castle, and Orhaniye, with its finger of sand stretching into the bay at Kizkumu beach, are other attractive spots in this remote and rugged corner of Turkey.

There are plentiful bays to hole up in for cooling dips or nights afloat, such as Dirsek Bükü, a cozy inlet only accessible by boat with a lone taverna serving calamari, homemade bread, grilled meat and fresh fish.

Aquarium Bay, Bençik Bay and the coves around Kizil Island all offer peaceful stops with water that wheels through the whole palette of blue, as well as pine, almond and olive trees ashore.

With their wide arcs of pebble beach, Palamut Bükü and Kargı Koyu are popular spots for lounging and swimming between Knidos and Datça.

Marmaris to Göcek

Rounding the southern tip of the gulf and sailing a short distance east you reach the attractive anchorage of Bozuk Bükü guarded by the crumbling ruins of a Hellenic castle.

The remains of the ancient city of Loryma can also be traced on the scrubby slopes surrounding the bay.

Sailor’s House is one of a couple of restaurants on the shore, with mezes, meat and seafood served yards from the lapping water.

A short hop east, Serçe Limani is a peaceful inlet with a simple taverna, while Gerbekse, just south of Çiftlik, is a similarly secret hideaway with ruins of an ancient church and beckoning blue water, only accessible by boat.

Tucked into its own pine-backed gulf to the north of Çiftlik, the lively resort of Marmaris offers all manner of life. Several hours east of Marmaris is the picturesque cove of Ekinçik, where you’ll find the swish My Marina restaurant, a more upmarket affair than many in the region.

From here, you can visit the ancient Carian town of Kaunos, indulge in age-defying mud baths up the Dalyan river or watch the loggerhead turtles nesting at the protected İztuzu Beach.

Gulf of Fethiye

Backed by mountains and fringed by thick pine forest, the compact Gulf of Fethiye is home to 12 islands and innumerable coves and bays.

Fethiye, once the ancient city of Telmessos and now one end of the 335-mile Lycian Way hike, is a busy harbor in its own protected bay. For a good wander, head to the bazaar, browsing stalls selling spices, fruit and vegetables, cheese, textiles, bags and other handmade goods. You can refuel at cafe Baba Dondurma , known for its ice cream.

Göcek, a pretty waterfront town, is the gulf’s main yachting center. It’s a laid-back place for strolling, shopping, eating and drinking and taking a boat out to the bays and islands, with the odd superyacht appearance getting tongues wagging.

Hotel D-Resort is a stylish spot with several gourmet restaurants, including Q Lounge, serving Japanese cuisine infused with local and Peruvian flavours.

Lotis Kitchen is a good option on the waterfront, while for cheaper eats Kebab Hospital is a fun joint serving a range of skewered treats with flatbreads and Turkish sides.

Of those 12 islands, Tersane, once the dockyard for the Ottoman navy, is the largest. It’s an attractive spot with a cozy harbor, lone taverna, rocky ruins – and goats.

Tomb Bay, Fathom Bay, Ruin Bay and Wall Bay (sometimes known as Cleopatra’s Bath), are a few of the anchorages around the islands, some with simple restaurants ashore.

Little Kapi Creek, on the inside of the peninsula at the southwest tip of the gulf, is a tucked-away spot with olive groves, crumbling ruins and old orchards. It’s home to the atmospheric Gobun restaurant, serving Turkish classics such as lamb tandir. The real world is a million miles away here.

To the south of Fethiye is Bestas Limani, more commonly known as Cold Water Bay because of the cold springs that flow from the mountains. When taking a dip here, you’ll notice the top layer of water is distinctly colder than lower down. A short walk away is the ghost town of Kayaköy, abandoned in 1923 when the Treaty of Lausanne forced the Greek residents out.

Nearby, Gemiler Island is thought to house the tomb of St. Nicholas – the patron saint of sailors – and still has the ruins of five Byzantine churches.

Vladimir Putin meets Xi Jinping in Beijing

Russian President Vladimir Putin's trip to China is part of the great power politics currently being played out between the West and the global south.

In this arena, China's President Xi Jinping is promoting his multipolar view of the world, a realignment of the world's geopolitical centre away from the US and Europe, to Asia.

Xi sees China front and centre on the stage, with a coterie of countries to back him up.

China, Russia, Iran and North Korea are at one end of the spectrum, but widen out the view and there is also Brazil, India and South Africa, who all see the world through a lens at odds with the West.

Added to that is the so-called "no-limits" friendship between Russia and China. It has been tested to the limit as Russia continues its war in Ukraine. But there is no sign China has any plan to abandon its neighbour.

So what will China want to talk about?

First, the Russia-Ukraine war. China is under growing pressure from the US and Europe to rein in exports of dual-use items like semiconductors and machinery tools that Russia can use on the battlefield.

But if China is feeling the heat, you wouldn't know it. Its exports to Russia surged last year. The way Xi Jinping sees it, Russia is another market for China's export driven economy, and with Western companies banned from doing business with Russia, China has stepped in to take advantage of it.

Why Putin may visit Vietnam next

Asia correspondent

There is a possibility, Vladimir Putin will visit Vietnam after his summit with Xi Jingping in Beijing, or later this month. It would be Putin's first state visit to the country since 2017.

Vietnam is one of Russia's three closest partners in Asia, alongside China and North Korea.

Experts suggest a visit from Putin would signal to the world that he's committed to a "Turn to the East" policy and allow the Russian leader to show that Western efforts to isolate his government over its invasion of Ukraine have failed.

Maintaining a close connection to Moscow is a priority for the Vietnamese leadership. They have a tricky balancing act trying to juggle ties with both America and China.

Beijing's encroachments into the South China Sea represents a potential territorial threat to Hanoi. Whilst America is an obvious counterweight to that, the US is also considered a threat to the ruling Communist Party.

Welcoming Putin to Hanoi, a leader the West has sought to cut off, is proof the Vietnam government wants close relationships with as many powerful nations as possible.

Russia is one of its seven so-called "strategic partners" and it would come as no surprise if Putin does touch down in Hanoi. Vietnam could also be expected to seek an arms deal with its historical ally and replenish its ageing Soviet-era military equipment.

China is also resisting pressure from the West to use its leverage to force Mr Putin to wind down the war.

While President Xi doesn't want to see Russia in the grip of collapse, after all they share a 2,500-mile-long border, a long, grinding war in Ukraine has benefits for China.

It drains European energy and resources, distracts the US and allows China to get on with its territorial claims in Asia and its ambition to dominate international trade in EVs, solar panels and batteries.

In this Sino-Russian relationship, China has the upper hand. It's receiving cheap raw materials from Russia and paying 30% less for natural gas than Europe did before the war. China is calling the shots.

While Mr Putin and Mr Xi have an enduring friendship, this alignment is a thorn in the side for the West. But there seems little Europe and the US can do about it. Threats aren't working, sanctioning Chinese banks might.

For Beijing, it's all about balance. China needs the US and Europe to remain open to its exports. So far, it has been able to have it all. However, it's becoming increasingly untenable for the West to stand by while China stands with Russia.

A time may yet come when President Xi Jinping is forced to make a choice.

Beijing warns manila not to abuse fishing arrangement.

China has warned the Philippines not to abuse its goodwill arrangement that allows Filipinos to fish with small boats in designated waters near China's Huangyan Island in the South China Sea.

"If the Philippine side abuses China's goodwill, we will take countermeasures in accordance with the law," Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular news briefing on Wednesday in Beijing.

The remarks came as about 200 Filipinos on board five commercial fishing vessels sailed on Wednesday toward the island, over which, with its adjacent waters, China has indisputable sovereignty.

The trip was led by a group called Atin Ito (This is Ours), about two weeks after the China Coast Guard took necessary measures and expelled a Philippine Coast Guard vessel and another official vessel entering the waters of Huangyan Island without permission.

The China Coast Guard said on Wednesday that Philippine vessels illegally entered Chinese waters in the South China Sea, and it conducted normalized law enforcement activities in adjacent waters off Huangyan Island.

According to the goodwill arrangement made in 2016, fishing by Philippine fishers in designated areas off Huangyan Island is not an issue, but the arrangement requires that the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard and other Philippine government vessels and aircraft refrain from entering the 12 nautical miles and corresponding airspace of the island.

However, the arrangement was unilaterally disrupted by the current Philippine administration who dispatched its coast guard ships and official vessels to intrude a number of times into waters within 12 nautical miles of Huangyan Island and encouraged Filipino fishers to challenge the arrangement to help promote its political agenda.

As the Chinese side has repeatedly said, the real cause of heightened tensions in the South China Sea over the past year is the Philippine administration's unilaterally abandoning previous agreement and understanding between the two sides.

"Huangyan Island has always been China's territory," Wang said. "If the Philippines infringes on China's territorial sovereignty and jurisdiction, China will defend its rights in accordance with the law. The relevant responsibilities and consequences are entirely borne by the Philippine side."
