Best time to visit germany.

July and August are the busiest months for tourists in   Europe , so outside of these times you will generally encounter fewer tourists.

May, June and September are considered pleasant times to travel as there are less crowds and the climate is comfortable. During these months, beer gardens and cafes bustle at all hours, outdoor events and festivals enliven cities and villages and hiking, cycling and swimming are popular pursuits.

Snow usually starts to fall in December, and winter travel to Germany is becoming increasingly popular, especially to the ski areas in the Bavarian Alps.

Autumn is the optimal time to enjoy romantic Germany. The foliage is turning golden and the climate is still agreeably mild for getting out and about.

Geography and environment

Located in Central Europe, Germany is bordered by:

Top 3 contemporary art spots of Berlin

Centrally located and well-serviced by several public transport hubs, historic Mitte is one of the easiest places to view Berlin's killer art scene. See run-down buildings that have been transformed into galleries and hotels, wander down gritty laneways full of vibrant graffiti and feel the urban buzz of Berlin.

2. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

Berlin's counter-culture is evident in the streets of this East Berlin borough, which is full of an eclectic range of hip galleries, innovative hotels, bohemian bars and vintage flea markets. This is the perfect place to gallery-hop, take snapshots and view the handiwork of some of the world's most iconic street artists.

3. Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery

After the triumphant fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 this section of the wall was adorned with colorful paintings and political murals, many reflecting the tone of this iconic time in Germany's history. A visit here reveals history in a way that no museum or book can.

Destination must-see's, oberammergau:.

The tiny Bavarian village of Oberammergau is straight from the pages of a storybook. You’ll find countless traditional, timbered houses with colorful murals depicting everything from religious scenes to fairy tales. Every 10 years, travelers flock from all over the world to see the city’s famous Passion Play. It all began in 1634 when villagers promised to perform a play depicting the life and death of Jesus Christ every ten years if God would spare them from the Bubonic Plague. No one fell victim to the Plague after that. The tradition continues today, and will be performed in 2022. To join the cast, you must have been born in Oberammergau or have lived in the town for no less than 20 years. This epic play, though performed in German, transcends language barriers and is a bucket list item for many travelers.

Christmas Markets:

Before Christmas was ever celebrated, Germany had special winter markets. These markets were only open for a day or two in early winter to stock up on food and supplies to hold them over in the cold months. With time the markets expanded and craftspeople set up stands selling items often given during the holidays. What makes these markets special and unique compared to other holiday shopping is the atmosphere and quality. While walking the German streets you smell the aroma of mulled wine and baked apples with festive lights and historic buildings. You will not find mass-produced items here, but real quality craftwork.

Berlin and the Wall:

After World War II, Germany separated into two countries, with the east as communist and the west as democratic. As the capital of Germany, Berlin became the center of this divided nation, constructing a wall to contain the segregation. Before the wall was built, citizens in East Germany had begun to move to West Germany to avoid communist rule. After hordes of people began leaving the East, the leaders constructed a wall overnight, shocking the community. Despite initial beliefs, the country was not reunited for some time and the Berlin Wall stayed up for 28 years. Its fall, which happened in 1989, was something that was celebrated all around the world.

Frequently used as a location for movies and TV shows, the Schloss provides an elegant setting for Tauck's exclusive cocktail reception and dinner, hosted by a member of the family.

Tauck Exclusive – Evening at Burg Satzvey

Cross the moat for a special evening at burg satzvey.

Considered one of the best-preserved medieval moated castles in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region, Burg Satzvey (Satzvey Castle), not far from Köln, has been home to the same noble family for more than 300 years. We invite you to cross the moat and visit this 12th-century castle after hours for a Tauck Exclusive tour and gala evening with a reception, dinner and musical entertainment… to which you'll be welcomed by a member of the family.

While most commonly associated with beers, bratwursts and tight leather pants, Germany is a country full of delightful finds that extend far beyond the stereotypes.

From dreamy castles and fairytale towns to awe-inspiring nature and sprawling cities, Deutschland has a little something for every kind of traveler… although I’ll admit the leather pants are also great.

I first visited Germany on a 6 week backpacking trip across Europe, and as I sipped my comically large beer under the toasty Berlin sun, I felt a strange sense of calm and belonging.

Spurred by this hunch, I moved to Munich. One study abroad, and 5 years later, I’m still here, with so much giddy enthusiasm for this country that I’ve become a thoroughly insufferable dinner guest.

But my social life’s loss is your gain, my friend… because today, I’ve decided to channel all my Deutschland fangirl tendencies into this concise Germany travel guide filled with all my top tips, itineraries, and recommendations.

german for tour

Save this Germany travel guide for later!

I promise it’ll come in handy!

I hope you find it helpful, and of course, feel free to ask any more questions in the comments section or on Instagram here.

Traveling to Germany Basics

Currency: Euro

Language: German, although accents and dialects vary wildly! In larger cities and tourist hotspots, most Germans also speak excellent English.

Getting Around: Trains, buses and flights are plentiful and affordable in Germany – my best tip is to use Omio to compare options easily. Having a car is ideal for visiting smaller towns, more remote locations and numerous destinations in a short amount of time, but is otherwise not needed for big cities.

Germany Highlights (By the Season)

  • Winter: Christmas markets, skiing & alpine sports, Karneval and Fasching season (Carnival), Starkbier (Strong beer) season
  • Spring: Cherry blossoms in Bonn , Frühlingsfest (Springfest) in Munich
  • Summer: Hiking, Beer Garden season, summer festivals/celebrations
  • Fall: Oktoberfest and other Volksfests, the world’s biggest pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg, the Wurstmarkt (world’s largest wine festival)

My Favourite Places in Germany

Let’s get my mega-biased opinion out of the way first – Munich is the city I now call home, and I couldn’t recommend it more… especially if you’re obsessed with beer like I am. This is the birthplace of Oktoberfest after all!

There are lots of fun things to do in Munich , like hopping around the city’s sprawling museum district (many only cost 1 euro on Sundays!), eating up the best Bavarian food that Munich has to offer or soaking in the wealth of historical sites scatered around the city.

It’s also an ideal base for many epic day trips. Going from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle (AKA the real life Sleeping Beauty castle) takes only 2.5 hours. Or, if you want to visit glorious Salzburg from Munich (AKA the birthplace of Mozart and setting of Sound of Music), that’s only 1 hour by train.

Why visit Munich when you travel Germany:

  • Amazing beer & beer festivals
  • The English Garden – one of the largest city parks in the world
  • Beautiful palaces and museums
  • Easy base for amazing day trips to the Alps

german for tour

Berchtesgaden National Park

If it’s natural beauty you’re after, Germany’s Berchtesgaden National Park (near the border to Austria) is a must-visit.

Everything here is breathtaking – from the shimmering turquoise lakes and snow-flecked mountains to the adorable Berchtesgaden town center.

And, if you’re up for it, this is the ideal place to enjoy a typically Bavarian wellness weekend.

Why visit Berchtesgaden National Park when you travel Germany:

  • Stunning hikes and scenery
  • The glorious boat ride on Königssee to see the equally stunning Obersee
  • Historic sights like Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest

german for tour

Hands down one of my favourite places to visit time and time again is Berlin.

This endlessly fascinating city is home to incredible museums, delicious food, and a unique culture that makes it distinct from the rest of the country, despite its status as capital!

Whether you’re a history nerd, an avid partyer, or a famished foodie, Berlin has plenty to offer.

Why visit Berlin when you travel Germany:

  • Fascinating history
  • World-class museums and attractions
  • A thriving nightlife and food scene

german for tour

Franconia is a glorious region in northern Bavaria that is divided into Lower, Middle, and Upper Franconia.

To me, it’s one of the most underrated regions in Germany for international visitors, with an abundance of fairytale half-timbered houses, amazing beer, and unique natural landscapes.

Here are some places in Franconia that are absolutely worth visiting:

  • Franconian Switzerland
  • Würzburg (still haven’t been yet!)

german for tour

Perhaps the most idyllic entry of this list is Monschau, a sleepy but gorgeous village found near the border to Belgium.

I was lucky enough to come here for Christmas markets a few years ago, and I loved it so much, I skipped the train I’d pre-booked just so I could spend a few more hours there.

Picturesque half-timbered houses clustered around a roaring central river… oh, and a castle on a hill. Because of course they have one.

Why visit Monschau when you travel Germany:

  • Super friendly locals
  • Picture-perfect scenes at every turn
  • Christina might cry if you don’t

german for tour

Hamburg is an amazing city I’ve had the chance to visit a few times now. It’s a lifestyle city that reminds me a lot of my hometown, Vancouver.

Home to a mix of classic and modern architecture (including the coolest opera house in the world!), as well as Germany’s #1 attraction – the adorable Miniatur Wonderland, Hamburg has a lot to offer tourists, but perhaps the best way to enjoy it is with a nice beer and sunset along the Elbe.

Why visit Hamburg when you travel Germany :

  • Amazing architecture like the Elbphilharmonie
  • Fresh and tasty seafood (and a booming foodie scene!)
  • A fun, vibrant vibe

german for tour

Dresden is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, and its beauty is all the more astounding when we consider that much of the city was destroyed completely in WWII.

After decades of reconstruction however, Dresden once again shines with its former glory, establishing itself as one of the most important cultural hotspots in Germany.

… and all only a stone’s throw from Saxon Switzerland, one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the country!

Why visit Dresden when you travel Germany :

  • Stunning architecture and sights
  • World-class museums and culture scene
  • Its jawdropping Christmas market (the oldest one in the country!)

german for tour

Stuttgart (and its Surrounding Area)

Stuttgart is the biggest city (and capital) of the German state Baden-Württemburg.

It’s perhaps best known as the ‘cradle of the automobile industry’, which explains why it’s home to not just one, but two car-centric museums: one belonging to Mercedes-Benz, and one to Porsche.

Besides cars though, the area around Stuttgart offers up some of the cutest small towns you can find in Germany, all easily reachable by public transport, meaning you get the best of all worlds during a visit here.

Why visit Stuttgart and the surrounding area when you travel Germany:

  • Fairytale towns like Esslingen, Ludwigsburg, and Tübingen
  • Stuttgart’s Stadtbibliothek, one of the most unique and beautiful libraries in the world
  • Lots of fun events like Stuttgart’s Christmas Market and the Cannstatter Volksfest

german for tour

Thuringia is a state often overlooked by international tourists, but if you’re looking for a truly charming German escape, its capital Erfurt makes an excellent choice.

This beautiful city is famed for its unique Krämerbrücke, which is a gorgeous medieval bridge lined with residential buildings.

But that’s not all – there’s also an impressive cathedral, an imposing fortress, and surprises waiting on every corner… quite literally, because Erfurt is the HQ of the German children’s channel KiKA, and there’s plenty of fun statues of famous characters scattered around town.

Why visit Erfurt when you travel Germany:

  • Krämerbrücke, the longest inhabited bridge in Europe
  • Quirky and fun children’s channel sculptures all over the city

german for tour

Cologne, to me, is a city synonymous with fun and celebration. While at first glance, it might not rank among the “prettiest” places to visit in Germany (much of it was destroyed in the war), it still boasts several impressive landmarks and sights, like the epic Cologne Cathedral.

Where Cologne really shines though is during special events – the Christmas markets here are some of the best I’ve been to in my entire life, and the Karneval celebrations… well, those are truly epic!

Why visit Cologne when you travel Germany:

  • Bucket list events like the Cologne Christmas Market and Kölner Karneval
  • The iconic Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), one of the most famous churches in the world
  • Fun-loving locals who are among the friendliest I’ve ever encountered in Germany

german for tour

Last but not least, we have Hannover, a city which (in my opinion) is one of the most underrated cities in Germany where tourism is concerned.

Locally, people often joke that Hannover is one of the most boring cities in Germany, but I don’t think that’s true at all. One quick look and you’ll find a stunning palace within the city, an architecturally impressive Town Hall (with a unique elevator offering epic views), and a cool laidback vibe that many compare to what Berlin was like decades ago.

Here are some awesome things to do in Hannover.

Why visit Hannover when you travel Germany:

  • Its gorgeous New Town Hall
  • The stunning Herrenhausen Palace and its gardens
  • A fun, laidback city vibe

german for tour

Bucket List Experiences in Germany

Germany is full of incredible bucket list experiences. Here are a few of my favourites:

Christmas Markets

German Christmas markets are the stuff of bucket list dreams.

If you adore Christmas, a German Xmas market trip needs to make it on your bucket list, because nobody captures Christmas coziness and joy quite like the Germans do.

The best part (besides the droolworthy assortment of German Christmas Market foods ) is that you’ll find Christmas markets in just about every city, town, and even the smallest of villages, each with their own unique take on traditions.

Trust me, you could never get bored of visiting these.

Here are some full guides to the Christmas markets I’ve visited in Germany:

  • Munich’s Christmas Markets
  • Berlin’s Christmas Markets
  • Cologne’s Christmas Markets
  • Esslingen Christmas Market
  • Ludwigsburg Christmas Market
  • Karlsruhe Christmas Market
  • Düsseldorf Christmas Market
  • Nuremberg Christmas Market
  • Essen Christmas Market

Oktoberfest

Trust me – Oktoberfest , AKA the world’s largest beer festival, is reason enough to make a trip to Germany.

Typically celebrated annually in Munich, this is one of the most incredible events in the world, with millions of people attending, millions of beer served, and a guaranteed recipe for making memories to last a lifetime.

… If you can remember anything after 5L of beer that is.

Read my full Oktoberfest guide for more details.

Visiting Fairytale Castles

If you love castles, I recommend avoiding Germany……. because you might just combust from sheer fangirl joy.

Seriously, Germany is every castle lover’s kryptonite, with elegant palaces and fairytale castles in the thousands. If you’re a Disney gal like me who grew up dreaming of happily ever afters, pack a ballgown and head to Germany ASAP.

I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Here are some castles that you must visit in Germany:

  • Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Nuremberg Castle

german for tour

The Cherry Blossoms in Bonn

The cherry blossoms in Bonn (also the birthplace of Beethoven and gummy bear legend, Haribo) are absolutely spectacular, and 100% worth visiting in Spring time. In fact, I’d even say they’re one of the best things to see in Europe at Spring time.

Yes, you, too, can come frolic in these tunnels of pink! Here is my guide on where to find cherry blossoms in Bonn.

german for tour

Karneval, Fasching, Etc.

Carnival Season is one of the best times to visit Germany if you’re looking for a party.

The grandest celebrations take place just before Lent, and are celebrated throughout the country, although the festivites in North-Rhine Westphalia are probably the best known.

My top recommendation? Go celebrate in Cologne, where the Kölner Karneval draws millions of visitors every year.

How Many Castles Are There In Germany?

It’s hard to say exactly how many castles there are in Germany because it depends on how you define a “castle.” But there is an estimated 20,000 castles, castle ruins, fortresses, and palace complexes all around Germany.

Why Are There So Many Castles In Germany?

The reason why there are so many castles in Germany has to do a lot with their history. Back in the Middle Ages, castles were built as fortified structures to protect against invading armies or to control vast territories. They also served as residences for the different royal and noble families all over the land.

Eventually as time went on, castles became symbols of prestige and power. Many have been rebuilt or reconstructed after war damages or to keep up with the changing architectural styles.

Nowadays, castles provide us with a glimpse into Germany’s rich cultural heritage and are one of the most visited tourist attractions of the country.

23+ Best Castles To Visit In Germany

Schwerin Castle

1. Schwerin Castle

Schwerin Castle stands in its own island in the midst of Lake Schwerin, the main lake within city. The city of Schwerin is easily reachable by car or public transportation from Berlin or Hamburg.

Surrounded by water and beautiful forests, Schwerin Castle truly looks like a storybook castle, drawing comparison to Neuschwanstein and its fairytale like qualities. Inside you can explore over 600 grand rooms, especially to see the throne rooms and vast collection of weapons and porcelain.

Outside, you can walk through the palace garden which has a green labyrinth and cascades. Every summer, you can find the Summer Gardens event taking place here alongside open-air stage concerts and screenings.

If you’re visiting Hamburg, Schwerin makes a great day trip. Check out other day trips from Hamburg here.

Sanssouci Palace

2. Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam

Sanssouci Palace was the summer residence of Frederick the Great, a former King of Prussia. It’s located in the city of Potsdam, a 40-minute S-bahn ride away from Berlin.

The palace is more intimate than grand, only having 12 rooms but with original 18 th century decorations and furnishings. Outside, the lush vineyard terraces welcome you to explore the extensive palace gardens. You will also find other landmarks in the grounds like the New Palace, the Orangery, Chinese House, and the Charlottenhof Palace.

For dining, you’ll find several options in the surroundings like Café Caroline or Café Repin.

It’s easy to visit Sanssouci Palace from Berlin – click here to book a guided tour from Berlin.

Wernigerode Castle

3. Wernigerode Castle

Wernigerode Castle is located in the mountains of Harz, above the town of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt Germany. The climb up to the castle is made easy by a special motorized tourist train in the town.

The castle was originally built as a medieval fort for German emperors in the middle ages. It was then turned into a Renaissance fortress before being rebuilt again in the 17 th century in a baroque style after the Thirty Year War.

There are different castle tours offered: classical guided tours, costume tours, and a special tour for children. Keep in mind that guided tours are an additional 2 € on top of the admission ticket.

They have a café located in an authentic historical location called the SchloßCafé where pastries and coffee specialties are served.

Wartburg Castle

4. Wartburg Castle

Wartburg Castle is located in the state of Thuringia, on a cliff overlooking the small town of Eisnach. It’s walking distance from the town center, approximately taking 30 minutes though it’s a steep climb.

It was the first of many German castles to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. With many of its original exterior structures dating back to the 12 th century, the castle stands as a symbol of over 1,000 years of German history.

If you are looking for a unique castle hotel experience, you can stay at the Romantik Hotel, located at the foot of the Wartburg Castle. The 5-star hotel has 37 individually designed rooms and hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year. You can also get a taste of Thuringian hospitality through the two restaurants in the castle: Inn For Cheerful Folk and Landgraves’ Room.

Burg Eltz Castle

5. Burg Eltz Castle

The Burg Eltz is one of the few medieval castles in Germany that has never been destroyed by world war. It has even stayed under ownership of the same family since the 12 th century for 34 generations. Part of the castle interior has been turned into a museum with well-preserved artifacts, treasury, and art from the last 850 years.

The castle is perched atop a mountainous forest that overlooks the Elzbach River on the north of the Mosel. The scenic location makes the short hike to the castle worth it, though you can also reach the castle by taking one of the shuttle buses (the hike is beautiful, though!).

To add to the experience, you can dine in a medieval setting in the two restaurants located in the outer castle. Full meals and snacks are served with a stunning view over the Eltzbach Valley.

Mespelbrunn Castle

6. Mespelbrunn Castle

Mespelbrunn Castle is a moated castle in the town of Mespelbrunn. It’s located in between Frankfurt and Würzburg, around an hour travel time by car away from both cities.

One of the most fascinating Bavarian castles, it’s located deep into the forest and surrounded by water with a background of the town’s rolling hills. To this day, the castle is a private residence of the Counts of Ingelheim who live in the southern wing. But it has been opened to the public. To see the inside of the castle, you must go on a guided tour.

Reichsburg Castle (Cochum Castle)

7. Reichsburg Castle (Cochem Castle)

The Reichsburg Cochem is a neo-Gothic style castle that towers 330ft over the Mosel River in the town of Cochem. The town center is easily reached by train or car but like the other castles on a hill, there’s a short hike involved to get to the top.

The castle has a long history of being rebuilt over several decades in different styles. Aside from traditional guided tours, the castle holds several events. On some Fridays and Saturdays, you can participate in a medieval-style dinner complete with period costumes, entertaining performances, and even a knighting ceremony.

If you don’t have time for a full medieval feast, you can check out the castle tavern. You can order refreshments or pastries while taking in panoramic views of the Mosel Valley and the surrounding vineyards.

Heidelberg Castle

8. Heidelberg Castle

Heidelberg Castle is one of Germany’s most famous castle ruins. This impressive castle dominates the views over the roofs of the old town of Heidelberg. To get to the castle, you can ride the funicular since it’s located high up.

Besides admiring its exterior, you can visit the beautiful gardens found in the castle grounds. Open to the public any time of the year, the garden terraces are a great place to catch views of the Neckar valley.

Some interesting things to see here include the Heidelberg Tun or the world’s largest wine barrel found in the cellars. In summer you can also watch the castle lighting, where a fireworks show is done in memory of when the castle burned down.

Read our guide for visiting Heidelberg Castle here!

Hohenzollern Castle

9. Hohenzollern Castle

Hohenzollern Castle is the ancestral seat of Prussian royals. It’s located on the hilltops of the Black Forest. The easiest way to get here is by car, following the roads through the forest that lead to the parking lot of the castle. Once there, you can easily reach the top by taking a shuttle which is part of the entrance fee.

The castle has over 140 rooms. Highlights include the gilded coffered ceilings, a vast jewel collection, and marbled columns. It also hosts special events like open-air cinema screenings, exhibitions, concerts, and its own Christmas market.

Hohenzollern Castle and Lichtenstein Castle both make great day trips from Stuttgart . See more day trip ideas here!

Lichtenstein Castle

10. Lichtenstein Castle

Built in the 19 th century, Lichtenstein Castle is located in the Swabian Alps of southern Germany. This historical castle is said an homage to medieval times as seen by the romanticism of the furnishings and architecture.

Since the castle is relatively small, the tour guide takes you through the first and second floors of the castle in half an hour. Some highlights include the armory and the knight’s hall.

In the surrounding area, you’ll find two restaurants (Old Forester’s Lodge and the Castle’s Tavern) that keep in with the medieval theme.

Linderhof Palace

11. Linderhof Castle / Linderhof Palace

Though Linderhof Castle is the smallest of the wonderful castles of King Ludwig, it is the only one he lived to see in its finished state. If you’re making your way through the Bavarian countryside to visit various castles, we recommend booking this day tour that takes you both to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof .

This royal palace draws in visitors with its beautiful landscapes and eye-catching symmetry. Though the interiors are luxurious, the park is also a sight to behold and one of the best places to go for a stroll. You’ll stumble upon a grotto, several pavilions, and fountains with fun water shows. In the greater surrounding area, you can also find a hotel and restaurant called Schlosshotel Linderhof.

Burg Rheinstein

12. Burg Rheinstein

Rheinstein Castle is a hillside castle the overlooking the Rhine river. It’s filled with carefully restored attractions such as a working drawbridge, medieval knights’ armor and weaponry, and romantic gardens with views of the Rhine valley.

During the holiday season, the castle turns festive and holds special tours where you can spend a magical Christmas in the castle grounds. You can also visit their restaurant Kleiner Weinprinz for a romantic night with locally sourced wine in the rose garden or the panoramic terraces.

Neuschwanstein Castle

13. Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein)

No list of the best castles in Germany is complete without Neuschwanstein Castle. This fairytale castle is said to be Walt Disney’s inspiration for his famous Cinderella castles. It’s also a popular day trip to take from Munich since it’s less than the 2 hours away. However, we suggest spending a full day here to make the most out of it.

Neuschwanstein was one of King Ludwig of Bavaria’s main architectural projects and one of the causes behind his nickname “Mad King Ludwig.” Before suffering a mysterious death, he spent his last years dedicated to building his own fantasy world through grand castles.

Aside from the iconic exterior and backdrop of the Bavarian Alps, the highlights of Neuschwanstein include its golden throne hall with no throne and Marienbrücke, a pedestrian bridge over a cliff with the best view of the castle.

Neuschwanstein is a popular day trip from Munich! Click here to read how to plan a day trip from Munich and here if you’re planning to visit in the winter.

If you’re looking for a great place to stay near Neuschwanstein, read our review of a hotel we loved in Füssen.

Hohenschwangau Castle

14. Hohenschwangau Castle

While you’re in Neuschwanstein, you can easily make your way to the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle. This castle was built by King Ludwig’s father, King Maximilian.

A visit to Hohenschwangau Castle includes going for a walk through the romantic castle garden and enjoying beautiful views of the Alpsee and the Bavarian Alps. You can also make your way to the village of Hohenschwangau, filled with charming streets straight out of a storybook.

Nymphenburg Palace

15. Nymphenburg Palace

Nymphenburg Palace is an inner city palace located near the city center of Munich and easily reached by bus or tram. The palace is filled with fun, cultural activities, from museums dedicated to royal carriages to classical music concerts.

Exploring the palace grounds is also an activity in itself. Discover cascades, streams, a lake, and even smaller castles scattered around. You’ll find several pavilions like a hunting lodges and a sauna hall.

You can grab a quick bite in between sightseeing at the café in the park or inside by the south wing of the palace.

Herrenchiemsee Palace

16. Herrenchiemsee Palace

Herrenchiemsee Palace is located in a small island in Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. You can only reach the castle via boat.

Aside from its unique location, Herrenchiemsee Palace is known for being largely inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The interiors are decorated lavishly as an homage to the Sun King. There is even an exact replica of the famous Hall of Mirrors, complete with ceiling frescos and sparkling chandeliers.

Drachenburg Castle

17. Drachenburg Castle

Drachenburg Castle is one of the most beautiful castles located along the Rhine river. It sits atop the Drachenfels hill in a small riverbank town called Königswinter. It was built fairly quickly in the 19th century, only taking two years. Currently, the castle is owned by the State Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia.

It has an interesting history since it was never occupied by the original owner. It was then used as a summer palace and a Catholic boarding school before its ruin during the second World War. The current castle has been restored and visitors can visit it through guided tours. Some highlights include the chapel’s stained glass windows and of course, the breathtaking panoramic views of the Rhine and the Siebengebirge area.

Burghausen Castle

18. Burghausen Castle

Burghausen Castle is known to be the longest castle complex in the world. It stretches for a length of a little over 1 kilometer. It’s located in the town of Burghausen in Upper Bavaria, along a hill overlooking the Salzach River.

The castle was built in the 11th century and historically, it served as an impressive medieval fortress. The complex is divided into the main castle and five large courtyards. The original structure showed that each area was protected by moats and drawbridges. The main castle is now home to the State Castle Museum which showcases Gothic paintings from the Bavarian State Picture Collection.

19. Schloss Johannisburg

Schloss Johannisburg is a Renaissance castle built in the 17th century found in the city of Aschaffenburg, Bavaria. It’s located in the center of the city and overlooks the River Main.

Today, the castle houses the State Gallery of Aschaffenburg, which features an impressive collection of art and artifacts from Bavaria’s history. Visitors can admire the castle’s beautiful architecture and its beautiful gardens. Some of the highlights include the Renaissance Hall, the Archbishop’s apartments, and interestingly enough, the world’s largest collection of architectural models made from cork.

Burg Altena

20. Burg Altena

The Burg Altena is a medieval castle located in western Germany, more specifically in North Rhine-Westphalia. The castle is built on a hill overlooking the Lenne. The castle walls and towers follow the contours of the rock, giving it a unique and distinct appearance.

In the early 1900s, the first youth hostel was established within the castle. To this day, the hostel is still up and running. It’s also quite accessible since there’s a tunnel with modern multimedia installations that leads to the adventure elevator. This elevator then takes you up to the castle courtyard where you can explore exhibitions and even grab a bite at the castle restaurant.

21. Braunfels Castle

The Braunfels Castle is a picturesque fairy tale castle towering on the crest of a basalt rock in Braunfels, a city located in Hesse.

Highlights include the museum and Knight’s Hall which showcase collections of weaponry, armor, art, sculpture and medieval furniture. Visitors can even tour the chambers and state rooms within. The counts’ and princes’ of Solms-Braunfels private collection is on exhibit at the separate Family Museum.

The castle also hosts open-air operas and other cultural events against the breathtaking backdrop of the castle’s inner courtyard and its gardens.

22. Sigmaringen Castle

Sigmaringen Castle is situated in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It has a stunning location, rising over the Danube river on a towering hill known as Schlossberg or Castle Rock in English. The Schlossberg rises up to 115 ft above the river with steep cliffs. The castle features a Gothic revival style though it incorporated other elements like Baroque and Renaissance as it was reconstructed over the years.

The castle now is an important tourist attraction where visitors can tour the castle rooms full of ornate furnishings and historic art. One of the highlights of the castle is the Hall of Weapons, which is one of the largest private weapon collections in Europe. The castle also houses another museum called the Marstall Museum which showcases the royal fleet of carriages.

Nuremberg Castle

23. Nuremberg (Nürnberg) Castle

The Nuremberg Castle, also known as the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, is a complex of medieval fortresses located in the heart of the Old Town of Nuremberg. The impressive castle and city walls are a great symbol of medieval architecture as well as the power of the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages in the city.

Nuremberg Castle is made up of three sections: the Imperial castle (Kaiserburg), the Burgraves’ Castle (Burggrafenburg), and the buildings erected by the Imperial City (Reichsstädtische Bauten).

Pro biker from Germany keeps coming back for Wisconsin's Tour of America's Dairyland race

german for tour

Bike parts lay on the patch of grass between the sidewalk and Tyler Street in Cedarburg while professional biker and Germany native Wolfgang Brandl's support team services his bicycle.

They are preparing Brandl, 38, for a 75-minute race around four blocks in the city, the sixth of 11 locations on the Kwik Trip Tour of America's Dairyland bike race series.

A day earlier, during the Tour De Pere, the fifth race in the series, one of the wheels on Brandl's bike was damaged when another rider's pedal hit it. The quiet residential area on Tyler street is the unofficial pit stop where Brandl's support team ensures his bike is in tip-top condition.

Wolfgang and ToAD's history

Brandl lives in Germany, but he keeps being drawn back to Wisconsin for the Tour of America’s Dairyland, or ToAD, bike races. He's one of the people from 15 other countries to come to Wisconsin to compete in the ToAD series since its genesis in 2009.

Brandl rides with his professional biking teammates from the German group the Maloja Pushbikers.

ToAD is an 11-day criterium race series through Wisconsin communities. Criterium bike racing, also known as crit racing, is a short lapped-circuit race. There are typically 8-10 category races held each day of the series.

According to the ToAD webpage , founders Tom Schuler and Billy Ochowicz believe that everyone should have access to a world-class bicycle racing experience.

According to the executive director of ToAD, Bill Koch, even if bikers do not finish the 75 minutes of laps there are still cash prizes to be won during the course of the race. These cash prizes are called "primes" (pronounced "preems" after the French word for "gifts") and have offered at as much as $5,000 in past years.

"Primes can change the dynamic of race flows," said Koch.

Brandl mentioned nothing of these cash prizes in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, though. One thing he did talk about was his longtime love for biking.

Even on his vacations, Wolfgang Brandl can be found biking. He trains between two and four hours per day on his bike and averages 40 to 70 miles of biking per day.

Brandl started bike racing when he was a child, but stopped when he went to university to get his degree. In 2009, when he was 23, he returned to the racing scene.

He came to Wisconsin for the first time in 2016 after his friends told him about the Tour of America's Dairyland races.

What keeps Wolfgang Brandl coming back to Wisconsin?

Due to Wisconsin's history of being home to many German immigrants, Brandl enjoys the familiarity of the culture here.

"The food is very similar, we also have a lot of dairy, we eat a lot of cheese, a lot of fried stuff," Brandl said. "The second names of people are German, and some even speak German, or their grandfather or grandmother speaks it."

Although Brandl was thinking of retiring from the Tour of America's Dairyland races this year, once he had finished his 75 minutes of racing, he had firmly changed his mind about this being his last ToAD race.

"I'm just having so much fun," said Brandl amid the ringing of cowbells held by the cheering spectators lining the sidewalks of Washington Avenue. "I made so many friends here, so it would be hard not to come back."

He thought of retiring because he believed that 38 years old would be a good age to retire. If he doesn't race professionally in the coming years, he will be racing in the amateur category.

Wolfgang Brandl won the Janesville Town Square Grand Prix

Brandl won first place in the Janesville Town Square Grand Prix, the first race of this year's ToAD. He also earned enough overall points to place third in the ToAD Cheddar Series Omniums.

The official Tour of America's Dairyland website lists the results of each race on their results page .

ToAD’s final two races of 2024 are the Café Hollander Otto Wenz Downer Classic Saturday, June 22, and the Cafe Hollander Tosa Village Classic Sunday, June 23.

Plans for the rest of his trip

Brandl planned to join a short community ride out of Wauwatosa on June 21.

"We do a one-hour spin of juniors," said Brandl. "We try to be idols for younger people to get into the sport and bring more people's attention."

Brandl said that he is going to stay even longer than the duration of the ToAD series, because he has so many friends to visit. He said they will explore the cities and the countryside along with some stops at museums and lakes.

What people love about 7 Day Germany Tours

Small tour group with an exceptionally knowledgeable guide. He knew the best places to stop for food/beer and navigated us through any queues! Such beautiful places to explore (Rothenburg & Residenz Wurzburg were a particular highlight... we would never have visited if travelling alone) Hotels were of a high quality... particularly loved the hotel in Nuremberg (facilities & breakfast were awesome) Location of all hotels were perfect. All airport transfers were on time and very professional. Tour transport was very comfortable- Mercedes Bus. We would definitely book with Indus Travel again as they responded quickly to all queries. Miller were their local supplier in Germany we can highly recommend them - a very professional service.
The tour was good. The hotels were great and the breakfasts were plentiful. The bus driver was very safe and helpful with bags. The guides were of varying satisfaction. I was disappointed that the itinerary stated key sights we would visit but we didn’t actually go inside and free time didn’t allow for all the visits I wanted to do and we didn’t see everything on the itinerary. It was a good taster trip. I see much more on my own.

Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter has announced her upcoming North American headlining arena tour. The “ Short n’ Sweet ” tour, which kicks off September 23 in Columbus, Ohio, includes dates at New York’s Madison Square Garden and Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Amaarae , Griff and Declan McKenna will be supporting Carpenter on this tour. Carpenter has partnered with PLUS1 on this tour to launch the Sabrina Carpenter Fund, which will support the well-being of people and animals, including national and local organizations working on the issues of mental health, animal welfare, and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Nearly six albums into her career, Carpenter made Hot 100 history with her new single “Please Please Please” debuting at No. 2, and “Espresso” rising to a new peak of No. 3 on the list. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter became the first solo act in the history of the Billboard chart to land two simultaneous top-three hits without having previously charted in that realm.

“Please Please Please” was completed by a cinematic music video starring “Saltburn” star and Carpenter’s real-life boyfriend, Barry Keoghan. The song was co-written with Amy Allen, who also helped pen “Espresso.”

The singles will appear on her new album, “Short n’ Sweet,” due out Aug. 23. “This project is quite special to me and [I] hope it’ll be something special to you too,” she wrote on social media with the announcement. Half of the LP was produced by Jack Antonoff, along with returning collaborator, Julian Bunetta, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Carpenter released her fifth album “Emails I Can’t Send” in 2022 , as well as its deluxe edition “Emails I Can’t Send Fwd” the following year. It became her highest-charting to date and boasted a hot single “Nonsense,” a song that caught fire after she provided alternate closing lyrics while opening for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in South America and Australia. She also toured the album on her own 80-date headlining world tour.
