Glendalough Monastery

Arriving at Glendalough in the afternoon has distinct advantages as most tours come here in the morning. You have an hour and a half to explore the monastic site and the surrounding lakes. The Monastery itself was founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin, but most of the buildings date from between the 11th and 12th centuries. Glendalough Monastery has many buildings; the tower and St Kevin’s Kitchen are the most complete all the rest are in disrepair to differing extents. The setting amongst the mountains and the lakes is what sets this monastery apart from every other. Take a stroll and enjoy this magical place, you will be transported to a tranquil peaceful place.

Holywood Village

We will take a short trip into Hollywood, also known as 'the original Hollywood, a small village in Wicklow that had boasted the name long before Hollywood in California even existed. your guide will take you for a walk through the valley here. See if you can spot Wicklow's version of the Hollywood sign.

Working Sheep Farm

The last stop of our day tour is to a working sheep farm in garden county, county Wicklow.  Meet the friendly local farmer who will delight in introducing you to rural life on the farm. you will be introduced to their hard-working sheepdogs, they will explain and show you how they are trained to carry out their duties. Then finally the main event, a sheepdog demonstration. This is a truly unique experience and gives you a great insight into life in rural Ireland.

The southern suburbs of Dublin are often overlooked. Our tour takes us through south Dublin towards Dun Laoghaire which was known in Victorian times as “Kingstown”. It was a popular vacation spot in that era and still today we can see hints of this past with the Bandstand on the East Pier or beautiful People’s Park that was originally created as a formal Victorian garden. Going further we will bring you past James Joyce’s tower which he mentions in the first chapter of his “Ulysses” that is located beside the renowned swimming location the “Forty-Foot” which brave locals in their hundreds daily take the ice-cold plunge into the powerful Irish Sea.

We journey a few minutes South of Dun Laoghaire to the cute seaside town of Dalkey. As we drive through you can spot the 10th Century Church and two Norman castles. Keep your eyes peeled as you might spot some famous locals such as Bono, Van Morrison or even Matt Damon who temporarily lived in Dalkey when filming “The Last Duel” and has fallen in love with the town. If you wish you can avail of a photo-stop at Coliemore harbour which overlooks uninhabited Dalkey island which boasts two churches, one from the 7th century and a Martello tower.

Glendalough

Now we start to leave the hustle and bustle of the city as we head to County Wicklow to appreciate the “Garden of Ireland” as we take ourselves back in time to when St. Kevin founded this awe inspiring site. Your friendly guide will explain the stories and tales associated Glendalough and why for thousands of years people have been attracted to the valley of the two lakes. Out of your premium vehicle you will be able to spend time exploring at your own leisure St Kevin’s Church, the 10th century round tower, the magnificent Celtic crosses.

From here at your own pace you can meander and soak up the views of this vast walkers’ paradise, also renowned for its bird-watching and abundance of wildlife. Travelling further along the Wicklow Way, you’ll come to “the valley of two lakes”, the ancient monastic settlement of Glendalough . This famous site was founded by St. Kevin in the 6 th century and the most iconic landmark, the round tower is over 1000 years old. Enter the visitor centre and find out more about this ancient city of learning, refuge and pilgrimage before exploring the fascinating ruins of its churches, graveyard and monastery for yourself. You may find time to follow the path to the Upper Lake and see the essence of this early Christian settlement set against the natural magnificence of the glacial carved valley.

Leaving the valley, we continue through the incredible Wicklow countryside to the  charming village of Avoca , the fictional home of the BBC’s “Ballykissangel”.

Avoca is also famous for its handweaving and is the birthplace of Avoca Handweavers and woollen mills. The working handweaving mill built on the banks of the Avoca River is said to date from 1723 and is the oldest extant manufacturer in Ireland.  The original whitewashed buildings of the old mill now house a large Avoca store with a selection of clothing, soft furnishing, gifts and food and a café.
