Known as the “Iceberg Capital,” the town of Ilulissat translates to the Greenlandic word for “iceberg.” Nearby is the Ilulissat Icefjord, containing icebergs produced by the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. This single Icefjord produces the most icebergs outside of Antarctica, but only a total of 10% of Greenland’s icebergs are created here. This Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.

Disko Bay is located on the west coast of Greenland and is within the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by a breathtaking natural landscape, take in towering basalt mountains and patches of greenery on the sloping hills. Admire the frosty glaciers scattered throughout the water and dock in Qeqertarsuaq, known as “The Big Island.” Disko Bay is also home to the famous Eqip Sermia Glacier.

Kangerlussuaq

Glide along the icy waters of the Kangerlussuaq Fjord and take in the snowcapped mountains jutting up out of the tundra. Admire the breathtaking blend of natural beauty through a mix of grassy flatlands and glacial peaks. Over 100 miles long, this massive waterway is one of the main crossroads of Greenland. In Greenlandic, the fjord’s name actually translates to “big fjord.”

Home to around 100 people, Itilleq is a remote settlement that pays tribute to its Inuit ancestors. Residents make their living hunting, fishing, and trapping. Take in the picturesque village on foot to get a firsthand feel of what life would be like with only the basic necessities. The town strives to preserve their unique heritage and cultural traditions.

Witness the calving of Eqip Sermia Glacier

Stretching over three miles wide, the Eqip Sermia Glacier is one of the most active glaciers in Greenland. Watch as blankets of melting ice slide off the glacier and thunder into the frigid water below. Listen to the booming crash when the air pressure is released, echoing monstrously into the still air. Get close to the glacier to safely take in the shades of white and blue.

In the town of Sisimiut, wooden homes dot the hillsides, a rainbow of vibrant colors that contrast with the surrounding white snow. This area has been inhabited for over 4,500 years and features a quaint blend of historical and modern life. Sisimiut is home to around 5,400 citizens, making it the second-largest city in Greenland. A wonderful experience! We like kayaking a lot and doing it surrounded by icebergs is a very unique touch! Our guide was very competent and friendly, we had a great time! Recommended experience to have in ilulissat!

Great experience! It is a perfect tour to have a deep enough experience of the ice cap. The hike on the ice lasts about 4 hours so we had the opportunity to see a lot! Our guide Kim was great, he lives there and he explained to us a lot of the history and curiosity about the ice cap and about kangerlussaq too. Highly recommended trip, probably the best thing to do in kangerlussaq!

Amazing trip made all the better by a touch of early fog making the burgs very ethereal. When the fog cleared wow …. We gad the pleasure of seeing a sea eagle, Humpback Whale the abandoned village, waterfalls …. Who knew you could age icebergs? Definitely take Polaroid sunglasses then you can see how large the Icebergs are below the surface of the crystal clear ocean! The crew were hospitable and knowledgeable And thanks for the drinks and snacks!

Fantastic guide who gave us a very thorough interpretation of the landscape. The rich mix of archeological findings, cultural knowledge, ethnology and folklore tied to death , childbirth and living were well-curated. The entire experience wasn't rushed and we had plenty of time to soak in the setting as well. I did not regret signing up.

An excellent insider's view into a remote settlement. Entry into church and detailed curation about lifestyle and practices of inhabitants in Oqaatsut were rich with details and meaning. The food was more than adequate and the guide's kindness in serving me hot lemon juice (in view of my wet nose!) was such a delight. It will be good to state clearly that the meal would only be a single course.

I would recommend this tour based on the the quality of conversations and curation related to glaciers and their ecological importance to the the region. Much care was taken in terms of passenger safety onboard. Perhaps the guide could make the experience a lot more inclusive by getting guests to introduce themselves and their country of origin. I regret to say that throughout the trip, the 3 guides appear only keen to talk to an American couple. Some of us felt rather excluded.

Great crew, lots of fish and a freshly cooked dinner. Saw whales and Caribou. Would have loved the fish to be just grilled or sashimi. Overall though, I would highly recommend.😃

This trip was awesome! Spectacular! The ice is ever changing, and to spend real time out there, sometimes just sitting and absorbing the splendor, is unique and wonderful. This was the highlight of my trip to Greenland, and one of the highlights of my summer. The information sheet lets you know pretty much everything you need to know; the information is very good. All of the guides that I met were great; Pavel took me on this trip and he is awesome. I really, really recommend this trip.

One thing should be made clear, this is not a safari like those in Africa or South Asia. The trip takes you up onto the top of the hills on the other side of Kangerlussuaq, from which you hope to spot wildlife from afar in the valleys. But, it was great to see the views, and more of the beautiful landscape of Greenland. And all of the guides in Kangerlussuaq are really nice people and very informative about the settlement and the area.

Another interesting trip through the floating ice. The observations "decks" fore and aft were too small for all of the people, a bit crowded when we all tried to go out there. Unfortunately, we could not get close at all to the glaciers due to the ice; perhaps the tour would have been more memorable if we had.

Wonderful excursion! Our crew was friendly and helpful! We had a chance to stop and do some whale watching on our way to the fishing spot. The fishing spot was close to a beautiful waterfall on a nearby mountain. We caught plenty of cod and enjoyed a nice dinner and conversation at the restaurant in Qooqqut.

There’s always been something inherently regal about Queen Mary of Denmark , even dating back to the early days of her courtship with King Frederik X in the ’00s. Two decades later, Mary is the first Australian-born queen in the record books and has never put a foot wrong in her royal duties, a feat only fortified by her impeccable wardrobe choices .

Now, the new sovereigns have embarked on their first State Visit from Denmark since King Frederik X’s ascension. The tour is visiting Sweden, Norway, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland, respectively, throughout the course of spring and early summer, with the Royal Yacht Dannebrog functioning as the couple's residence throughout the course of the visits.

Queen Mary’s arsenal of looks for the Swedish and Norwegian legs of the tour saw her, as always, lean into timeless tailoring, feminine silhouettes, and rich jewel tones—with a distinct Scandinavian sensibility and a healthy rotation of reworn favorites. The more recent Greenlandic visit, however, has called for warmer and more practical ensembles, not to mention the opportunity to don traditional costume.

Here, we take a close-up look at each of the monarch's outfits throughout the tour.

The Danish state visit to Greenland

On day four of the Danish royal visit to Greenland, both King Frederik and Queen Mary wore traditional national outfits, with Her Royal Highness donning a national costume called kalaalissut.

The third day of the tour saw the royals arrive at the West Greenlandic village of Attu, where summer temperatures are, as always, chilly at best. To combat the cold, Queen Mary wore wide menswear-inspired Pirette trousers by beloved Danish brand Skall Studio, paired with a Polo Ralph Lauren cashmere cable-knit jumper in sea green. An oatmeal-hued poncho and hat completed the look, with a bear-shaped brooch to keep all in place.

Practicality was at the forefront of Queen Mary’s dressing from the outset of the Danish royal visit to Greenland. Delivering a lesson in layering, the monarch styled a wool gilet by Dutch brand Arma over a classic Uniqlo Ultra Light Down coat and roll-neck sweater—maintaining elegance through tone-on-tone color coordination.

For a day on the water sailing to Disko Bay in Qeqertarsuad, Queen Mary reached for another puffer in her rotation by Patagonia, which she paired with two cold-weather essentials: a Harkila jacket and Penelope Chilvers boots.

The Danish state visit to Oslo

The Danish royal couple’s second sun-dappled day in Oslo commenced with a government luncheon hosted by the Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre in honor of the state visit at Akershus Castle. The occasion saw Queen Mary debut two never-before-seen garments: the Ariceli checked bouclé midi skirt from the resort 2024 collection of Emilia Wickstead—a British designer who remains a firm favorite amongst European and British royalty—and a light powder-blue blouse by Danish designer Jesper Hovring.

Simple and understated was Queen Mary’s style playbook for an architectural tour along the Oslo waterfront, highlighting how Danish and Norwegian solutions effectively unite nature, water, and the human experience. A masterclass in perfect proportions, the monarch wore a collarless button-down by Italian shirting brand Baguette, complemented by a pleated wraparound navy skirt. Her Gucci sunglasses, Chanel ballerinas, and Chloe crossbody bag enhanced the elegance of the ensemble.

Following the run of activities throughout the first day of the Oslo visit, Queen Mary and King Frederik X retreated to the Royal Yacht Danneborg, before remerging for the Gala Banquet hosted by the Norwegian royal couple. Queen Mary wore a bespoke lavender gown by Danish designer Birgit Hallstein that keen followers of royal fashion will recall her wearing at the Stockholm wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia in 2015. Subtle amendments were made for its latest outing: the appliqué embroidery was removed from the skirt and delicate swathes of matching sheer fabric were added across the neckline and sleeves. Grey satin Manolo Blahnik Hangisi 105 pumps and a suite of pearl and diamond bijoux—including the Danish Pearl Poire tiara—finished the look.

Before slipping into head-to-toe protective attire, Queen Mary II’s look was a vision of easy elegance to visit to MiNaLab, an open laboratory for students and researchers that forms part of the University of Oslo. The monarch paired her favorite wide-leg Chloé trousers with a crisp white shirt, an Anya Hindmarch Mortimer top handle bag, and Malone Souliers tan mules. A sweet detail was found at Queen Mary’s décolletage: an 18k gold necklace designed by Copenhagen-based jewelry label Halberstadt tipped with an ‘F’ for Frederik.

For the Danish royal cohort’s arrival to Oslo, Queen Mary was decked out in nautical blue and white tones that complemented the waterfront arrival to Honnørbryggen to meet King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway. Queen Mary’s entire look was a repeat of familiar and well-loved pieces from her wardrobe, from the white Ralph Lauren wool jacket, to the Erdem printed jacquard midi skirt and Max Mara Whitney bag. Her pearl and diamond earrings, wreathed with sapphires and rubies, were gifted to the monarch from Queen Margrethe II.

The Danish state visit to Stockholm

Queen Mary's patriotic penchant for creations by Danish designer Mark Kenly Domino Tan is no secret, and this bespoke white tweed dress—which she wore on the first day of the Stockholm visit for the welcoming ceremony—is one that we’ve previously seen on rotation in Queen Mary's wardrobe.

Arriving aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog to the sound of cannons from Kastellholmen and Skeppsholmen, the newly-crowned monarch layered up for the crisp late morning air with a navy shawl, complementing her matching bow-embellished hat by Jane Taylor, Gianvito Rossi pumps, and a clutch by Danish brand Quidam.

Queen Mary later switched out her headwear for the Nell barrette by the royal favorite Ellen Hunter, while her blue brooch—an heirloom from her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe—was a mainstay accent throughout the day.

Stepping out to attend the state banquet hosted by the Swedish king and queen in honor of their Danish guests, Queen Mary donned a striking beige and burgundy ensemble by Jesper Hovring for the formalities. 50-year-old Hovring is the Danish designer behind many of Queen Mary’s gowns, which she is known to repurpose for various events year after year.

In this particular instance, the Queen wore for the first time a top from Hovring’s fall 2018 collection, together with the skirt, an existing piece in her wardrobe since 2017. Finishing the look with elegance, she wore the Danish Ruby Parure Tiara, earrings, necklace, brooch, and bracelet set.

For the second day of the Swedish State Visit, Queen Mary looked particularly regal as she wore a red dress by Copenhagen designer Birgit Hallstein, a beloved garment that the royal has worn on several occasions. This time, she styled it under a camel-hued Oscar de la Renta cape, completed with Anya Hundmarch's Mortimer top-handle bag and Gianvito Rossi red suede pumps. While her accessories were not Scandinavian in design, her jewels were. Queen Mary adorned some of her favorite pieces by Danish jewelry house Ole Lynggaard: the Winter Frost earrings in 18-karat yellow gold and diamonds, and the Copenhagen leaf brooch.

The final evening of the State Visit saw a reciprocal reception hosted in honor of the Swedish hosts aboard the Royal Yacht Danneborg. For the occasion, Queen Mary took a more understated route, calling on some past favorites, including Saloni’s floral Jacqui B dress, her purple Boss clutch, and Joseph’s Kido coat, its belt cinched at the waist. Once again, Queen Mary maintained a Danish DNA in her look through her choice of jewelry, opting for gold earrings from her existing collection of bijoux by Copenhagen-based designer Rebekka Notkin.

Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent make surprise appearance on King Frederik and Queen Mary's royal tour

The danish king and queen are visiting greenland.

King Frederik and Queen Mary were joined by two very special guests on their royal visit to Greenland – their 13-year-old twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine !

The youngsters were not included in the official itinerary for the Danish king and queen's tour, which ends on 6 July, and so it was a pleasant surprise as Vincent and Josephine joined in with the engagements.

The twins joined Frederik and Mary on a boat trip to Qeqertarsuaq, where they helped to install a new whale microphone for scientific Arctic research.

The Danish royals were dressed appropriately for the cold weather, wrapped up in puffer jackets, gloves and beanie hats.

Later, Vincent and Josephine accompanied their parents for a family fun day in the city of Qeqertarsuaq, with the teenagers participating in a football match and the family mile race for all residents.

The young royals share their parents' love of sport and have taken part in their  father's Royal Run event in Denmark in recent years.

Frederik and Mary are also huge tennis fans, and in 2020, they shared footage of their children practising their serves on the court.

Stepping into the public eye

Since their father became king in January following Queen Margrethe's abdication, Vincent and Josephine have made more public appearances.

As well as joining their parents and elder siblings, Crown Prince Christian and Princess Isabella, on the palace balcony at the proclamation , Vincent and Josephine also stepped out for Frederik's 56 th birthday celebrations at Frederik VIII's Palace, Amalienborg in May.

Ahead of the Euro 2024 tournament, Frederik posed for a snap with the twins in matching Danish football kits, with Josephine joining her father at the England vs Denmark match in Germany, where they chatted with the Prince of Wales.

Last week, Frederik and Mary marked a new milestone as Crown Prince Christian, 18, graduated from high school with his younger siblings also in attendance to celebrate.

While Princess Isabella, 17, is about to go into her final year at Øregård Gymnasium in Hellerup, Prince Vincent attends Tranegårdskolen, while Princess Josephine started 6 th grade at Kildegård Private School in August 2023. The palace did not share the reason behind Josephine's school move.
