Meg did an absolutely fabulous job ensuring that our trip to Hawaii was awesome. Anyone can book air, hotel, and car. However, the insight of how to make the most in the short time in Hawaii wasn't something I could have done on my own. Meg shared with us her go-to trips on the big island. She also shared an app to listen to while traveling. She knew how much time to spend on each side of the island.Thank you, Meg!!

We used Travel To Paradise for our trip to Hawaii. Meg was incredible! She stayed in contact with me and really helped me navigate changing our dates/flights/plans during Covid. It was a stressful time with the uncertainty of travel but Meg kept us up to date and helped every step of the way, she really put us at ease. Every excursion and activity she helped plan for us was personalized to our family and exceeded our expectations. Absolutely couldn't have done it without her help and guidance. Meg is such a sweet, personable, helpful person! She helped to take a lot of stress off my shoulders when we booked our very first Hawaiian vacation. She gave me multiple options to choose from and was very accommodating. She contacted the rental car company for us when I had a question about it. I plan on making another trip to Hawaii in the near future and will definitely be contacting Meg. So nice to have someone who lives IN Hawaii, help plan the perfect trip of a lifetime! You cannot go wrong with Meg!

Aloha fellow travelers,

I wanted to personally let you know about the amazing and outstanding travel planning services of Meg Nichols, from Travel to Paradise. I know a lot of people try to book their travel themselves these days...but think again...using Meg to help us personally plan and book our Hawaiian Family Adventure was the best decision we made. When I first contacted her, Meg was super fast in her reply. She listened to what my family's unique needs and wants were for our Hawaiian vacation. She put together a SPOT ON itinerary at an amazing price.

We can't wait to get back to Hawaii! What an absolutely AMAZING adventure. Thank you Meg.

Meg also recommended a separate person to book all our activities (Zipline, ATV, Snorkel, Luau etc) . She was wonderful too.

Booking with Meg, at Travel to Paradise, literally helped my family enjoy paradise without a single worry or concern. Every hotel was prepared for us. Every flight, island transfer, rental car and hotel check- in was about as easy as it gets. My husband and I have traveled all over the world, from French Polynesia to Africa and back...and Meg's personal touch, with ****EXTRA Birthday SURPRISES for me, just added a cherry on top of our amazing Hawaiian Family Adventure.

Let Meg help you plan and book your trip. You will not regret it. She is on top of everything, knows details only locals know, checks in with you repeatedly, and can get you great deals.

With Sincere Aloha, The Sokol Rogers Family John's Creek, Georgia

I highly recommend Travel to Paradise! Working with Paula was a great experience! She’s knowledgeable, patient, honest and has the sweetest personality. I celebrated my birthday in Maui and she was a tremendous help with helping me organize, plan and book everything. She’s super easy to work with, and gives the best recommendations and travel advice. Contact her for your next trip to Hawaii, you’ll be so glad you did!!

I've delayed writing you this email because it means our trip is officially over. I'm not even sure how to express our gratitude for your guidance (and patience) with us while booking this trip.

Our trip was a dream - waking up to the sounds of waves (and roosters), enjoying coconut shrimp and endless pina coladas in our cabana, and exploring parts of the world we've never seen. Something I didn't share with you before - I was really close to my grandmother growing up, and she passed away 14 years ago. Hawaii was her favorite place on earth, and Kauai her favorite island. Being able to experience what she experienced held a sentimental value I cannot adequately express. We went all week without seeing a rainbow. On our last day as we were packing up on the beach, we turned around to see a vibrant, full rainbow. I swear it was my grandma saying "you see what I mean about this place?" 🙂

We cannot thank you enough for making this happen. We hope to work with you again in the (near) future. Thank you!!

We have had a wonderful anniversary trip! We are so glad we met you and can’t thank you enough for all of your help with our travels. You went above and beyond! We realized how much we have missed Hawaii and are already trying to figure out when we can come back. We will definitely ask you to help us with the details!!  Mahalo, Vanessa and Duane.

Kelly and I just wanted to say thank you so much for assisting in setting up our honeymoon vacation to Hawaii.  We were super pleased with our accommodations and tours.  Even with the initial hic-cup of our flight getting cancelled (airline mechanical issue, not your fault) and not being able to see Pearl Harbor because of our late arrival due to the airline, you and your team really went the extra mile to ensure that we had a wonderful trip.  It's hard to find even good customer service these days, but you ladies  were Great!  Your pleasant assistance and professionalism were greatly appreciated!  Please let us know if we can assist as a reference in the future and we will be sure to recommend you to anyone we hear of going that way.  Thanks again for everything!  L & K.

Hawaii is the most welcoming place I have ever traveled to.  The extra aloha spirit is something you can’t help but instantly feel when you visit the islands, and it deepens the peace and love in the hearts of all who travel there. I want to give a special thanks to Paula at Travel to Paradise and her associate Karen who helped with the activities.  Without their help, we would never have been able to piece the trip together so well.  I would recommend them to anyone who was planning a trip to Hawaii.  They will spend hours of time on the phone with you, planning the perfect vacation.  They see to every detail and are not satisfied until they know you are.  Brian and Dana

When you’re expecting, everyone tells you to take a trip with your spouse while it’s still “just the two of you.” My husband and I wanted to do a Babymoon, and between both of our demanding work schedules, and preparing for the arrival of a new family member, we didn’t have the time we needed to plan our “Babymoon.” I enlisted Meg’s help at Travel to Paradise because of all the travel agents I spoke with, Meg asked me the most questions and really gathered insights on what my husband and I were looking for in this trip. She was organized, thorough, and painted me such a great picture of what our Babymoon could really look and feel like in a way that felt designed just for us and we liked to do. Usually I do hours of research to plan my ideal vacation; but since I didn’t have the time, I could tell that Meg would approach it the same way that I would have, and I trusted her local insights.

Meg referred us to a network of people who provided dinner recommendations and excursions for the two islands we planned to visit (The Big Island and Kauai). By the way, the helicopter tour over Kauai was the absolute trip highlight! And we enjoyed our Snorkel Cruise in Kealakeua Bay. Meg’s connection who helped us select pregnancy-friendly excursions was so important to our experience and saved me hours of research.

Meg also was very responsive to questions, such as the best route to take to get from one side of the Big Island to the next, and because of her recommendations, we knew exactly which stops we should take along the way. We approached our Babymoon with confidence, and that made all the difference. My husband and I couldn’t believe that we were setting on a twelve-day vacation without doing our usual research, but it turned out great: from stopping at the Black Sand Beach on the Big Island to see turtles sunning themselves, to visiting the arts town of Hanapepe in Kauai, our Babymoon is a treasure that we will always remember.  Michelle and Chad

We’re the experts on Hawaii Vacation Packages

How to plan your perfect trip.

Oahu Island

Hawaii Aloha Travel beats Online Mega Travel websites….Every Time!

Hawaii vacation packages, local hawaiian travel agency, booking hawaii vacations made easy, how can i choose the best hawaii vacation packages.

Hawaii is the perfect vacation destination for anyone. It’s not as exotic as taking a safari in Africa or going to Belize. Since it’s the 50th state, you’ll feel comfortable and not out of place.  Here are some tips to help you make important decisions.

Likely, you’ve taken many vacations in the past, so you should have an idea of what preferences appeal to you. For example, if you are an adventurer, choose a Hawaiian vacation experience that includes hiking, waterfall rappelling, or even some extreme sports. It really begins with you, but we are here to help. We can help narrow your preferences because you can’t do it all!

Trying to research the best vacation packages on the web is like going down a rabbit hole; it’s information overload! You can click forever and not get anywhere. One of the easiest ways to get started is to seek some help. Hawaii Vacations is all we do; we’re in Hawaii and have the experience and knowledge to help you create the best package to suit your needs.

Not all vacation packages are created equal. Typically, it’s best to choose one of our popular custom-tailored bundles, which include airfare, accommodations, transportation, and excursions. Our all-inclusive packages are set itineraries curated by our local experts, so you don’t have to do anything but show up!

When considering how much Hawaiian vacation packages cost, it’s important to consider your all-in budget. This means remembering to factor in things like meals, fees, incidentals, gas, and souvenirs! Many times, people overlook hidden costs and unexpected expenses.

Reviews are a great way to get a feel for vendors and how they respond to customers. However, they are subjective and often skew either too optimistic or too pessimistic, making it challenging to decide. We recommend using a professional like our company for feedback and recommendations. Since we’re right here in Hawaii, we have first-hand knowledge about all the elements and will ensure you choose the right vendors for your Hawaii Vacation.

Step-by-Step Procedure to Choose the Best Hawaiian Vacation Package:

  • Start by deciding your dates and, realistically, how long you want your vacation to last.
  • Set an all-in budget, remembering things like incidentals and gifts.
  • Fill out our Hawaii Vacation planning tool and get advice from a professional in Hawaii.
  • Evaluate the options you receive and discuss the pros and cons.
  • Create a bucket list of activities you’d like to do, and then refine it based on the time you have available during your vacation.
  • Choose a package that includes travel protection and allows for flexibility. Check for options that balance luxury experiences with cost.
  • Read our reviews and check the credentials of our company or the one you choose to work with for your vacation.
  • When booking airfare, pay attention to flight times and connections. Additionally, ensure you choose the correct airport. Often, people book cheap airfare and find themselves stranded at the wrong airport.
  • Read the fine print. Ensure you review your documents and understand any cancellation policies. If you book with a company like ours, we provide a 24/7 emergency number to call in case something unexpected occurs during your travels.
  • After you’ve chosen a package that interests you, contact us to discuss any modifications you’re contemplating. We’re eager to collaborate and adjust until we align with your vision. Together, we’ll ensure your Hawaii vacation meets your every expectation.
  • Ensure you purchase “Cancel for Any Reason” travel protection. This type of insurance permits you to cancel, rebook, or obtain a refund. It’s invaluable should anything unexpected occur.
  • After finalizing your package, discuss payment options, whether it’s a deposit or paying in full. We provide a “ book now, pay later ” option, allowing you to make incremental payments on your booking over time, without any credit checks or interest charges.

East meets West at “The Gathering Place.” Oahu is the third largest Hawaiian island and the capitol of Hawaii. About two-thirds of Hawaii’s diverse population call Oahu home, creating a multicultural tapestry rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. On Oahu you can experience metropolitan amenities in Honolulu and famous Waikiki Beach, and explore the timeless history of Pearl Harbor’s memorials and the architecture of Iolani Palace.

A surfer and traveler’s paradise, Oahu is known for epic waves and the best nightlife of all the islands. In Honolulu, sample craft breweries and fine dining by night, and world-class shopping and cultural events by day. Then after a breathtaking hike atop Leahi (Diamond Head), head to the North Shore to explore historic Haleiwa Town, pineapple fields, waterfalls and snorkeling. After all that adventure, don’t forget to unwind on the sands of the island’s beautiful beaches! Bringing together culture, luxury, and scenic beauty, Oahu definitely earns its nickname of “The Gathering Place.”

Volcanoes and history come alive on the “Big Island.” From the active volcanoes to the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from rainforests at Hamakua Coast to jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach, Hawaii Island presents nature’s beauty and force on a dramatic scale.

To avoid confusion with the name of the state, the Island of Hawaii is often called the “Big Island,” and it is well-named! Nearly twice as big as all other Hawaiian Islands combined, its size and scope creates a microcosm of environments and activities, including lava viewing, stargazing, diving and snorkeling, and hiking in Volcano National Park. And don’t forget the white, green, and black sand beaches!

In addition to the natural variety, you’ll also find extravagant resorts, incredible golf courses, charming local towns and sacred Hawaiian historical sites, including the birthplace of King Kamehameha I and Hawaii’s first missionary church in Historic Kailua Village (Kailua-Kona). With all that Hawaii Island has offer, you’ll want to come back again and again.

Discover world-famous beaches and more on the “Best Island.” It won’t take you long to discover why Maui has been voted “Best Island” by readers of Conde Nast Traveler for over twenty years. Maybe you’ll fall in love with the unforgettable beaches at Kaanapali and Makena, or the splendor and mana (power) of Haleakala National Park. Perhaps the championship golf courses and the arts and culture of Kahului and Upcountry Maui will steal your heart. If not, the incredible food, culture, and island adventures certainly will.

On Maui, you can see migrating humpback whales and sunset luaus, take mermaid swim lessons, and explore the scenic road to Hana. You can indulge in exotic farm-to-table dining or grab a “plate lunch” and a shave ice like a local. Whatever you choose, your vacation on the “Valley Isle” is sure to be unforgettable. Maui earns the name best island by delivering the full Hawaiian experience to people of all ages.

Explore scenic splendor and the great outdoors on the “Garden Isle.” The oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain, Kauai is a portrait of time and nature’s elements. Known as the “Garden Isle,” on Kauai, you will find lush green valleys at the feet of steep mountains, tropical rainforests fed by beautiful rivers, and dramatic waterfalls spilling over jagged cliffs. It’s also the least developed island—many areas are only accessible by sea, air or foot.

Kauai is Hawaii’s fourth largest island and in addition to its dramatic beauty, this island is known for a wide variety of outdoor activities. You can kayak or paddleboard the Wailua River or snorkel on Poipu Beach or below the soaring cliffs of the Napali Coast. You can hike miles of trails of Kokee State Park or explore the Waimea Canyon area—Hawaii’s own Grand Canyon. Even go ziplining or tour the island by helicopter! Or if you prefer your adventures closer to earth, you can explore some of Kauai’s 60 beaches—from family friendly tide pools to tranquil white sand hidden gems. More than just an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, Kauai is also beloved for the rich culture found in its small towns and along its one-lane bridges. Make your escape to Kauai and discover all the splendor and allure that the Garden Isle has to offer.

Find peace, tranquility and a true getaway on Lanai. Away from the crowds and hustle of everyday life, Lanai is a destination of untouched tranquility—a place for rest, relaxation, and exploration. Though it’s less than ten miles from Maui, with less than 30 miles of paved road and not a single stop light, Lanai, Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island, can seem like a different world.

Lanai is best known for its two exquisite Four Seasons resorts and championship-level golf courses at The Challenge at Manele and The Experience at Koele. But luxury Lanai isn’t just for golfers!—wellness enthusiasts will find world-class amenities and foodies can enjoy peerless dining options at nearly a dozen hotel eateries.

And if your idea of a rejuvenating getaway involves seclusion and natural beauty, Hawaii’s “most enticing island” has plenty to offer. Keep your eyes open for dolphins at Hulopoe Bay, or go whale watching. You can explore the back-roads and red spires of Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods) by 4-wheel, or see the pine tree-lined trails by horseback. You can hike up to Sweetheart Rock or take a guided tour of the island petroglyphs. While Lanai’s romantic elegance and peaceful seclusion aren’t for every traveler, that is exactly why some consider this island getaway to be a true paradise.

Hawaii Luxury Vacations & Bespoke Travel

It is quite simply, the Pacific Ocean’s original paradise. Private luxury travel to Hawaii squarely meets all the fanfare generated over decades of tourism – solidly built on its now very familiar Polynesian history – then surpasses it with modern charm and sophisticated refinement.

Where you can be in touch with both the islands and the waters that surround them, the truest sense of paradise.

At 2,000 miles from the mainland United States, the archipelago of Hawaii is definitely getting away from it all. And with 750 miles of coastline, it offers plenty of room to dip your toes in the sand, breathe the sea air and just relax. Bespoke luxury travel to Hawaii can encompass any combination of the eight main islands you like. O’ahu is the best-known and most-visited of the islands, home to the capital of Honolulu, as well as the tourist hotspots of Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach. For a little downtime, the east coast has three of the island’s best beaches and the north shore is a surfer’s dream. An assortment of luxury accommodations awaits you on Maui, the island most favored for long stays. In addition to the luxury resorts and private villas, the island provides a natural escape via waterfalls and valleys, and the noted Haleakalā National Park. The Kailua-Kona region of the Big Island of Hawaii is great for shopping and dining, full of luxury resorts and condominiums. Alternatively, the Hilo and Puna regions are green and lush, home to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. For quiet reflection and eco-adventure, visitors head to Kauai, well-known for its secluded beaches and dramatic mountain scenery. You don’t have to sit on the sand all day, although it’s tempting. You can swim with sea turtles, dive with manta rays, search for whales, go horseback riding or simply go for a drive. Do take advantage of the touristy things, too – canoe-racing, hula-dancing, a luau or two – they’re all fun. Learn how to surf or play the ukulele. Truth be told: Hawaii will have you at “Aloha.”

Hawaii: A Taste of What to Expect

Honolulu on the island of Oahu is Hawaii’s largest city, a cultural hub for national landmarks and excellent shopping, particularly at Aloha Tower Marketplace on the waterfront. Maui yields more than a hundred miles of coastline and dozens of beaches to visit, along with cascading waterfalls and the infamous Haleakala volcano. The unpretentious island of Hilo is the departure point for shore excursions to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A diverse environment spanning high altitudes, tropical climates, and arid shorelines make for varied flora and fauna throughout all the islands. As well, the diversity of Hawaii’s multicultural heritage lends an open perspective to its people, the mix of Polynesians, European adventurers, and Asian immigrants being all wrapped up in one American flag.

Travel guide to Hawaii

hawaii expert travel agents

Home to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, the only royal palace in the U.S. and the welcoming aloha spirit, Hawaii is like no place on earth. The glimmering ocean, lava-spewing volcanoes, emerald valleys, towering coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, and  sublime luxury hotels & resorts  lure thousands of tourists each year, who get lost in the spiritual beauty of the hula and find out how the warmth of Hawaii’s people wonderfully complement the islands’ perfect temperatures. Although Hawaii is comprised of a chain of 132 islands, we usually refer to only a few islands when we think of Hawaii: Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai and the Island of Hawaii (more commonly known as the Big Island)

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Hawaii’s off-season – when the best rates are available and the islands are less crowded – is spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) – a paradox because these are the best seasons to be in Hawaii in terms of reliably great weather. Winter (December to March) can be a surprisingly cloudy and wet affair in the archipelago.

  • Spring (April to June) coincides with the end of the high season and the start of the dry season. This is a good period to travel to Hawaii, as the weather is great, sunny and dry, and airfare and lodging prices drop compared to the busy winter months.
  • Summer (July and August) offers the hottest weather on the islands, although it never gets too hot because the trade winds cause a constant cooling breeze. It’s also very busy season in Hawaii because of the school holidays, which means more expensive flights and hotel rates. While an extremely rare event, the summer is also the start of the hurricane season in Hawaii, which runs from July through December. Such was the case when category 3 hurricane Iniki came ashore on Kauai in September 1992, the most powerful hurricane to strike Hawaii in recorded history.
  • Autumn (September to November) is similar to spring and offers mostly sunny and dry days. The summer tourists have left and the winter tourists still have to arrive, so this is also the cheapest period to travel to and around the islands. On a side note, autumn is not only hurrican season (cf above) but also the time when the trade winds change direction, bringing sometimes stormy, hot, sticky weather onshore. Islanders call this  kona  weather, because  kona  means leeward or south, and this points to the direction from which these weather systems arrive.
  • Winter (December to March) brings the rains and clouds but the spurts of rain are mostly short-lived and falling overnight. It would be unusual to experience several days of solid rain, although it has happened. This is also Hawaii’s high season, thus, on average, the prices are higher and occupancy rates are higher.

It is also important to keep in mind that there are several fluctuations in the weather pattern dependent on the area where you stay in Hawaii:

  • Each island has a leeward side (the side sheltered from the wind) and a windward side (the side that gets the wind’s full force). The leeward sides (the west and south) are usually hot and dry, while the windward sides (east and north) are generally cooler and moist. For example, Hana is located on Maui’s windward side, and experiences an abundance of rain (even in the dry season), what makes the area so verdant; Wailea is located only a few hours away on Maui’s windward side and enjoys a mostly sunny weather even when its raining cats and dogs in Hana. Other rainy windward spots in the Hawaiian islands are Kauai’s famous North Shore and the area around Hilo on the Big Island.
  • Many visitors are drawn to Hawaii’s spectacular scenery found in higher elevations such as Kokee on Kauai, Haleakala on Maui or Kilauea on the Big Island. Temperatures in these higher locations drop 3.5° F (2 degrees celsius) for every 1000 feet (300 m) above sea level that you climb, so dress appropriately with pants and several layers of clothing. At an elevation of 10,023 feet (3055 m), the summit of Haleakala can be as much as 30° F (20° C) cooler than resort areas on the coast.
  • Many people are drawn to Hawaii because of the dramatic wave action, although this varies dramatically between island coasts and seasons. Summer waters are typically gentle on all beaches. During the winter on many north shore beaches, Pacific storms drive ocean swells towards the islands, creating the Hawaiian Islands’ legendary big waves.

HOW TO GET THERE

Hawaii receives numerous international and domestic daily flights via its five main airports:

  • Honolulu International Airport (HNL), also known as Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, is the principal aviation gateway of Hawaii, and is located near the state capital of Honolulu on the island of Oahu. It’s the only airport in Hawaii to handle flights to/from other destinations than the USA mainland and Canada. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Honolulu.
  • Kahului Airport (OGG) is Hawaii’s second busiest airport and the main getaway the island of Maui. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Maui.
  • Lihue Airport  (LIH) is located on the southeast coast of the island of Kauai. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Kauai.
  • Kona International Airport (KOA) is the main airport of Hawaii’s Big Island, located on the west coast near the resort areas of North Kona and South Kohala. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Kona.
  • Hilo International Airport  (ITO) is the secondary airport of Hawaii’s Big Island, located on the island’s east coast. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Hilo.

If you want to fly to Hawaii in utmost comfort, only few airlines offer a flat seats  to the Aloha State.

Before you buy a plane ticket, consider reading my  tips & tricks for buying the cheapest plane ticket .

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Hawaii belongs to the USA. Requirements for entry into the USA differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest USA embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Hawaii.

  • You need a  machine-readable passport (MRP)  with at least six months validity to enter the USA. If your passport was issued/renewed after October 26, 2006, you need an ‘e-passport’ with a digital photo and an integrated chip containing biometric data.
  • Under the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP), visas are not required for citizens of 38 countries for stays up to 90 days (no extensions) on condition that they have a return ticket (or onward ticket to any foreign destination) that’s nonrefundable in the USA.
  • All VWP travelers must register online at least 72 hours before arrival with the  Electronic System for Travel Authorization , which currently costs $14 USD. Once approved, registration is valid for two years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first).

Make sure you read my 10 tips to plan a worry-free trip .

GETTING AROUND

It’s quite easy to get around in Hawaii, and several modes of transportation are available:

  • Domestic flights  with Hawaiian Airlines are the only way to move around if you want to do some island hopping. Hawaii’s flagcarrier connects the islands daily via multiple flights and the cost of a domestic ticket is often quite cheap if booked in advance. Tickets can be booked online on the website.
  • The only islands connected via regular boat service are Maui and Lanai: from the historic Lahaina Harbor in West Maui, you can hop on a ferry for a day trip to the neighbor island of Lanai.
  • To really experience Hawaii, you need to rent a car in advance from one of the airports.
  • For most islands you can also get around by shuttle, taxi, ride-sharing app such as Uber or Lyft, or public transportation , although that won’t get you close to Hawaii’s famous natural attractions.
  • There are plenty of tour operators that offer guided bus tours to conveniently explore the islands.

INSPIRATION, HIGHLIGHTS & TRAVEL TIPS

There are several good reasons why you should put Hawaii on your bucket list:

  • Admiring some of the world’s most stunning natural scenery
  • Seeing the world’s most active volcano
  • Relaxing on gold, red and black beaches
  • Hiking some of the USA’s greatest trails
  • Whale watching (in winter time)
  • Staying at one of the USA’s best beach resorts

It’s important to keep in mind that the Hawaiian archipelago consists of six major islands – Kauai, Oahu, Molokai,  Lanai , Maui, and the island of Hawaii – each with its own distinct personality, adventures, activities and sights.

  • Oahu is the “heart of Hawaii”, home to the capital city of Honolulu, and famous for legendary surf towns like Haleiwa.
  • True to its island roots, Molokai is filled with rustic charm and epic beauty.
  • From its famous beaches to the peak of Haleakala, Maui offers a wealth of unforgettable experiences.
  • The Island of Hawaii is often dubbed the Big Island and offers lots to see and do, from active volcanoes to coffee farms and beautiful beaches to rich history.
  • The oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain, Kauai is draped in emerald valleys, sharp mountain spires and jagged cliffs aged by time and the elements.
  • Lanai is the smallest inhabited island in Hawaiian island and balances restful luxury with rugged terrain.

SUGGESTED ITINERARIES

It’s impossible to suggest one itinerary for Hawaii, but I hereby share with you a schedule based on my own holidays in Hawaii, which is great if you want to see archipelago in a time frame of three weeks, hereby making use of domestic flights.

  • Day 1-3 : Oahu: explore Honolulu and Oahu’s North Shore (recommended hotel: The Royal Hawaiian ).
  • Day 4-6 : Lanai: fly to Lanai & stay in luxury while exploring the area (recommended hotel:  Four Seasons Lanai ).
  • Day 7-8 : Maui: take the ferry to Maui and rent a car to make the scenic drive to Hana (recommended hotel: Travaasa Hana ).
  • Day 9-11 : Maui: enjoy some sunny relaxation in Wailea but don’t miss the sunrise/sunset from Haleakala (recommended hotel: Andaz Maui ).
  • Day 12-16 : Big Island: fly to the Big Island and explore the island from your base on the west coast (recommended hotel:  Four Seasons Hualalai ).
  • Day 17-21 : Kauai: fly to Hawaii’s most spectacular island and explore the breathtaking scenery (recommended hotel: St Regis Princeville ).

If you only have two weeks, I recommend to skip Oahu and Lanai, and focus on Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai. If you can only make it to two island, I suggest to visit Maui and Kauai, which I consider to be the most scenic islands in the archipelago.

For the planning of your own travel itinerary in Hawaii, I highly recommend Hawaii’s official tourism website  www.gohawaii.com , which boasts plenty of helpful information. In addition, for more ideas, I suggest the excellent Hawaii itineraries as provided by  The Rough Guides  and  Frommers .

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path adventures, and get you out of any jam. Especially if you know who to use.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

A woman soaks in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Kayak, paddle, raft—a river trip down Costa Rica’s Pacuare is good fun. And Danielle Meyer of Coastline Travel likes to book clients in the riverfront, all-inclusive, 20-suite Pacuare Lodge. “The way to get to the property is by whitewater rafting, so you truly begin with adventure!”

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

A man sitting in an open-air vehicle while on safari in South Africa smiles at the camera while an elephant is just over his shoulder, approaching.

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Tierra Bomba, a 15-minute boat ride from the Colombian capital of Cartagena, is an affordable Caribbean destination with a relaxed pace and soft white sands.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Matt Lindsey of LuxeSurfTravel can arrange a surf safari on a 165-foot boat, complete with dive masters. surf guides, and a spa. Guests spend a week cruising around atolls in the Maldives seeking out perfect swell and swimming with whale sharks and manta rays.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

”Totoro Eco-Lodge, in Nicaragua, has always been one of our favorites,” says Dominic Allen of Real Latin America. In addition to its laid-back vibe, it’s spectacuarly placed on Ometepe Island, with views out to the active Conception volcano. Allen recommends volcano hikes, rainforest excursions, tours of a chocolate farm, and sunset paddles in search of caiman.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Maui to hire expert to evaluate county’s response to deadly wildfire

WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — Nine months after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century struck Maui, Mayor Richard Bissen says the county will hire an outside expert to assess how its emergency management agency performed during the disaster.

The Aug. 8 wildfire killed 101 people and destroyed much of the historic town of Lahaina.

Maui’s police and fire departments have already conducted after-action reports. Bissen said in a statement Wednesday that the county is inviting proposals from “qualified experts” to evaluate the performance of the emergency management agency to better prepare for future responses.

The agency isn’t able to perform its own “after-action report” because of staffing shortages, the county said in response to an AP email Thursday seeking details on the request.

The fire department’s report was put together by the Western Fire Chiefs Association, the county noted, while the police evaluation was conducted internally.

Many of the recommendations in the police preliminary after-action report released in February call for better equipment and updates to technology — from getting officers earpieces they can use when high winds make it hard to hear their radios to equipping patrol cars with breaching kits to remove downed trees or utility poles from roadways.

The fire department report released last month identifies challenges firefighters faced, including poorly stocked fire engines, a lack of mutual aid agreements between Hawaii counties and limited equipment.

Hawaii native Savannah Gankiewicz crowned Miss USA after previous winner resigned

HONOLULU (AP) - Savannah Gankiewicz of Hawaii was crowned Miss USA 2023 on Wednesday, more than a week after the previous titleholder  resigned citing her mental health .

Gankiewicz, a model who leads a female empowerment nonprofit, will hold the title until August — the remainder of the pageant’s term, the  Honolulu Star-Advertiser  reported.

“I am ready to make a positive impact with this organization that I hold dear to my heart,” said Gankiewicz, of Maui, during a ceremony at the Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach.

As the first runner-up, Gankiewicz was announced as the replacement for former Miss USA 2023 Noelia Voigt, who stepped aside May 6. In a statement, Voigt thanked her fans and wrote, “Never compromise your physical and mental well-being.”

Voigt, a former Miss Utah, was crowned in September 2023.

Miss Teen USA, UmaSofia Srivastava, also resigned her title within days of Voigt’s resignation in a shock to the Miss Universe Organization, which runs both pageants.

Srivastava, the former Miss New Jersey Teen USA, wrote in a statement that her personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organization.”
