Latest reviews of Day Trips: Volcano Tours from Oahu

This was a great tour.

We went to a black sand beach, bakery ( try the malasadas they're amazing), craters, lava field, lava tube, and steam vents. We didn't get to try their lunch because someone in the group was car sick(hard to eat when ... more someone is vomiting right in front of you) For the helicopter ride we went down the coastline instead of over the volcanoes due to weather around there. The pilot was amazing! He was very knowledgeable, funny, and friendly. This tour would have been a lot better if it wasn't raining (rains there a lot so bring a raincoat just incase) and we didn't have someone who got carsick. That wasn't the tours fault and I definitely would do this tour again.

This experience was amazing our tour guide Dexter was great explaining everything very well accomodating everyone’s needs would highly recommend this tour.

If not for the rain

Our quide, Dexter was excellent. He was very thoughtful and professional. He made an otherwise rainy, gloomy day a fun day. The tour gave us a great overview.

Big Island Tour

Perfectly organised day, from communication prior to the day to everyone involved in sny part of the tour. The guide was great, hugely knowledgeable and interesting. The helicopter trip was perhaps the most incredible ... more thing I have ever done. The ground crew were superb and the pilot made it the best trip ever. After waiting 30 years to do this tour it didn't disappoint. Could not recommend it highly enough.

Good tour, but you can't schedule nature

The timings and organisation of the tour were good. We were picked up from the airport and taken to see the Volcano National Park sites with a good guide who kept us informed and was accommodating of our needs. Unfortuna ... more tely you can't schedule nature and we didn't see any volcanic activity apart from a little steam, but it was still interesting, especially the lava tube. We had a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters to finish off with, but I will not review that part, I will review their admin however. We really wanted a copy of the video of our flight as it was for a 50th birthday, but due to a technical difficulty could not get it at the time. We were told to just drop them a line, but after several emails and calls, still nothing - very disappointed in them.

Dexter was a great guide with tons of information about not only the specific tour items but also the island and people in general. Rainy morning made volcano viewing tough but that’s Mother Nature. The helo tour of volc ... more anos in the afternoon more than made up for things!

glowing lava at night

Awesome adventure!

We couldn’t have made a better choice!!! Definitely the guides know their stuff, from history of the island and its people to the geological topics that kept me entertained throughout the trip. We just about went around the island in vip style, the guys were well known everywhere they took us as well as knew their way. Will recommend it to a few friends that are planning to visit the island, it’s a must in your itinerary and couldn’t have made a better choice in tour guide services

lava flow at volcanoes national park in hawaii

Highly Recommend!!

Zane was incredibly knowledgeable about the island! If you want to go on a tour with a geologist, this is the one to take!! As a privately owned company, he was able to hit all of the major island highlights as well as take us to places on the island that other tour companies don’t visit. We learned so much about the history of the island and the volcanos on the island all while having a fantastic time! HIGHLY recommend!!

Girl on lava flow

Geo adventure family trip for the win!

David has a vast knowledge of so much of the island it’s amazing and he charmed us with a ton a factoids the whole day. Highly recommend if you are short on time on the island but want to see as much as you can in little time.

Spattering of lava at the viewing platform

Best Island Tour!

A must tour experience! Such an incredible day. What is unique about This tour, is how much you learn about the island formation and the flexibility in where he takes you! We traveled with friends and booked the VIP tour…if you can swing it, definitely put Geotours on your itinerary! Erik will not disappoint. You can see that he is passionate about the island and what he does. Mingled well with our group, lots of laughs, great energy and had a BLAST!!!

One of the best tours ever

What an excellent way to get to know the Big Island and learn about its unique place on Earth. Our tour guide Eric picked us up on time at our rented villa along with a number of other visitors and we proceeded to spend one of the better days on a tour of the island. Eric is one of the proprietors of the tour, is a degreed geologist and is truly an engaging and friendly person. The tour was excellent which combined both interesting sights and a tremendous amount of local knowledge about lava flows and local history. To say that this was worth the day spent would be to put it mildly. Even at twice the price, I would happily do this again and recommend the tour to anyone.

Very Best Geo Tour on the Big Island of Hawaii

Zane found his calling. He is incredibly well educated in geology, has traveled the world and knowledgeable about not only the local history, but the flora and fauna of the island too. And he is super personable and able to keep all 10 of interested for almost twelve hours of the day. We conversed about what we wanted to see on a big scale and he narrowed it to specifics based on weather, crowds and our groups patience. He was a saint. If you want to enjoy the very best island tour and get educated on the land and history, hire Zane and you will write the next five star review!

Chain of craters

Well worth the time and money

David was an outstanding host and tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend this tour. You will see a ton, learn a lot about the island and enjoy a delicious lunch.

Hawaii Geo Tours are the best!

Wow! Fantastic tour of the erupting volcano!!! The guides are geologists and explained so much about the volcano and how all the Hawaiian islands were created. The pictures I got during the day, and especially at night were incredible! The food and winery tasting were good too. I’ve done this tour twice in the past year and recommend it highly! I wish I could give more than 5 stars!!! 🤙

Helicopter ride

At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Honolulu airport , where we'll take a flight to the island of Hawaii to visit its most famous volcanoes. Ready to learn the secrets of how the island was formed?

Next, we'll arrive at the Kilauea Visitor Center , where we'll see several exhibits and learn about the most active volcano on the island . Here, we'll also admire the geysers and go up to the Kilauea Iki overlook .

Frequently Asked Questions

Read our answers to our customers’ common questions.

Tourists smiling on a tour through the Big Island of Hawaii Rainforrest

Everyone who visits Hawaii Volcanoes National Park wants to see lava.  You go there hoping to see lava fountaining into the air like on a National Geographic magazine.

Sorry to tell you, most visitors do not see lava.

Unlikely lava on a volcano tour

Here’s why: Lava is dangerous. As soon as lava is fountaining or flowing in a certain area, Hawaii Civil Defense determines if it is safe to allow people near it.  Usually it is not safe and the area is closed off.

How to see lava on a volcano tour

The best way to be sure you will see lava is to take a helicopter volcano tour. You will see it from hundreds of feet away, but it is still magnificent.

The chances of seeing lava from a helicopter are very high, but not guaranteed. Volcanoes are extremely unpredictable. Volcanic activity changes every day. The lava flow moves and the surface cools.

Do not make the mistake of going on a volcano tour to see lava. There are so many other reasons to go on a volcano tour. Our volcanoes have an amazing history, cultural significance, biological uniqueness, geological wonder, and a beauty like no other place in the world.

People who go just to see lava and don’t see it are disappointed.  People who go to appreciate everything else about the volcano enjoy themselves. If you do see lava on a volcano tour, it is a bonus and you are a lucky one.

You want a quick answer? Sorry, the answer is constantly changing.

As we mention all over this site, the volcano is active. That means that it is moving and hard to pin down. You might see photos from a friend who saw lava flowing into the ocean a month ago, but now it is nowhere to be seen.

This is why a  volcano tour  is the best way to view the volcanoes. Tours will take you to see the sights in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Then the guide will use his contacts to find where you have the best chance of seeing lava.

Sometimes it is best viewed from inside the National Park. Sometimes it is by the shore in Kalapana. Sometimes it can only be seen from helicopters. Some days you can’t see lava anywhere you look.

The key to an enjoyable visit to the Big Island volcanoes is to go for the volcanoes and consider any sighting of lava as a bonus. If you’re whole purpose is to see lava, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you insist that lava is your focus, then a  helicopter tour  has the best chance of seeing lava. The pilots search for lava and communicate where the sighting is the best.  When you get close, you can actually feel the heat from inside the helicopter.

Five different Volcanoes are on the Big Island of Hawaii:

  • Kilauea volcano

Mauna Kea Summit

Mauna Kea Volcano Summit. 13,796 ft. Photo https://flic.kr/p/4h5JWS

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in Hawaii. It is also the tallest sea mountain in the world. From it’s base at the bottom of the ocean floor it is 33,000 feet taller than Mount Everest.  Mauna Kea hasn’t erupted for thousands of years, but is still considered dormant and could erupt again.

Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on earth in terms of volume.

Kilauea is the volcano that most visit us to see.  It is the most active volcano in the world. It began erupting in 1983 and continues to erupt today.

Vog is volcanic fog. It is similar to smog in that it is dirty with particles that are not in typical fog.

Vog is formed when gases from the erupting volcano get into the air, mix with sunlight, oxygen and moisture.

Like smog, vog is not healthy for humans, plants or animals. Many people living near Kilaeau, experience headaches and respitory issues from vog.

Visitors on our tours will see and breath vog, but we rarely have visitors who complain of health issues as a result. Generally, complaints come more often from prolonged exposure by those living near the volcano.

Nevertheless, we encourage all visitors to pay attention to their bodies and take the following precautions:

  • Drink lots of fluids
  • Don’t overexert
  • Don’t smoke

Does vog smell like sulfer? A little bit.

Oahu to Hilo: Volcano Adventure Tour

Activity times, what's included, description.

Witness the destructive and creative power of volcanoes firsthand!

This hassle-free, island-hopping adventure will show you the rugged beauty of the Big Island's volcanic landscape all in one fun filled day!

You'll visit the island's main attractions, including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls, and historic Hilo town. You'll peer into Kilauea's active crater, explore an ancient lava tube, climb over lava strewn fields and stroll through a lush rainforest to view a thundering 442-ft waterfall.

Tour Itinerary

Get a good night's sleep so you can rise bright and early for a full day of exploring.

You'll fly direct from Honolulu to Hilo (airfare included).  Upon arrival, you'll be greeted at the airport by your tour guide and welcomed aboard a comfortable air-conditioned tour vehicle.

Entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii

  • Halema’uma’u Crater Overlook - This overlook offers dramatic views of the crater, located within Kilauea’s main caldera, and the results of the massive collapse that occurred during a recent eruption.
  • Kilauea Visitor Center - The Visitor Center houses a small bookstore and an exhibit area that provides visitors with information about volcanoes and the natural flora and fauna found on Hawaii island. Interpretive rangers are also available to answer any questions you may have and to stamp your national parks passport.
  • Steam vents - Watch the vapor escaping through the cracked surface as the groundwater is heated by molten magma deep underground.
  • Iki Crater Overlook - A smaller pit crater located next to Kilauea’s main caldera that has become a solidified lava lake.
  • Nahuku Lava Tube - You’ll be given the opportunity to walk through Nahuku, a massive lava cave left behind by a river of molten lava more than 500 years ago.
  • Chain of Craters Road - Your guide will take you down this winding scenic road that travels along the coastal portion of Hawaii Volcanoes N.P.
  • Kealakomo Overlook - Enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the jagged remnants of lava that has flowed into it.
  • Lunch - A deli-style picnic lunch is included with the tour. Time and location can vary depending on the weather and guest preferences.

Rainbows form on the mist below Rainbow Falls near Hilo

After a full tour of the park, you'll head back towards Hilo and make the following stops:

  • Akaka Falls : A short stroll through a lush rainforest will take you to the viewing platform for the thundering 442-foot-tall Akaka Falls. The route to the waterfall is a paved half-mile loop with some stairs along the way, but the view is worth it!
  • Rainbow Falls : When the sunlight hits the mist below this waterfall just right it creates a stunning rainbow. Though Rainbow Falls is much smaller than Akaka Falls, you can get closer to it, and it is more accessible (no walking required).

Statue of King Kamehamea the Great, located near downtown Hilo, Hawaii.

Once the tour has concluded your guide will drop you off at the airport in time for your return flight to Oahu. You'll be back in Waikiki by 9pm with many new and unforgettable memories from your day on the Big Island!

T he Kilauea Visitor Center is our first stop on our tour of Volcanoes National Park and a great place to get oriented. While you're there, you can grab a park map, ask about current conditions, get hiking information and find out about ranger-led activites. Take advantage of the restrooms, and remember to fill up your water bottle before heading out. If you didn’t bring a jacket, you might want to pick one up in the gift shop as temperatures vary drastically across the park.

Note: The visitor center closes at 5:00 p.m.

Please note: Due to construction, the visitor center may be closed or housed in a temporary location .

More of a stroll than a hike, the Mauna Ulu Fissure Hike is at the site of a 1969 eruption that spewed lava up to 200 feet in the air, destroying an 'ohi'a forest in the area. As you walk you’ll see lava trees and a variety of volcanic formations. The trail is marked with stacked rocks.

One of our favorite stops on the tour is the Pu’uloa Petroglyphs Hike. As you walk along this trail, you’ll see ancient petroglyphs. These simple carvings in the lava rock tell the story of Hawaii's past. The hike takes about 20 minute each way and ends at a well maintained wooden boardwalk that circles many of the 23,000 petroglyphs in this area. In fact, this site is home to the largest grouping of petroglyphs in Hawaii! As you walk along, remember to respect the sacredness of this place.

Note: This hike can get hot, and there's no shade. Remember to bring water.

The Ha'akulamanu (Sulphur Banks) Trail is an easy 1.2-mile round trip hike. Stroll along the paved path where you’ll see steam rising dramatically from the ground in this fascinating thermal area. Ha'akulamanu is known for birds colorful deposits and clouds of steam.

The combination of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gases create the distinct rotten egg smell.

Here you can get a wonderful aerial view of the Kilauea Iki Crater. Continue down the road to see Nahuku Lava Tube and to get to the shorter hike to Kilauea Iki Crater.

Does seeing the views of massive volcanic craters ever get old? We didn’t think so! Chain of Craters Road got its name from the handful of massive craters with viewpoints along the road.

Puhimau Crater was likely formed around 1500-1800 AD. It’s a gigantic pit crater, and in our opinion, it’s one of the best views on the tour. What’s a pit crater you ask? It’s when an empty volcano collapses and forms a giant hole.

Take a short walk to the boardwalk where you can take an epic photo in front of Pauahi Crater -- another huge pit crater that’s roughly 360 feet deep and 1,600 feet long.

Pull over and get out of your car for a quick stop at Muliwai a Pele. In Hawaiian, Muliwai means river of lava. This lookout might just appear to be more lava rock, but from a bird’s-eye view you can actually see how the Maunaulu eruption flowed from this volcanic cone about 5-miles down into the ocean... truly a river of lava.

Kealakomo overlook is a platform built on top of holei pali, a steep cliff with a 2,000 foot (600 m) drop. If you brought a picnic, there are tables at the overlook. Note it can sometimes get a little windy here at this overlook.

At the Kealakomo lookout, in addition to the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, you will also have an expansive view of the lava flows from the Maunaulu eruption that buried a portion of the ancient Hawaiian village of Kealakomo.

This overlook is the last view from this high up before you descend to the ocean level.

Located at the end of the Chain of Craters Road is a fantastic view of the Holei Sea Arch. T his 90-foot arch   was formed roughly 500 years ago from an ancient lava tube that hardened as it entered the ocean. Over the years, the sea sculpted the impressive arch shape.

There is an observation area about 1,000 feet past the gate at the end of the road. You will also find vault restrooms and picnic tables.

You’ll feel like you’re on Mars as you take in the terrain on your walk along Devastation Trail. This one-mile trail takes you along the path of a destructive and explosive eruption dating back to 1959.

Along the way, you’ll see spots where life is beginning to regrow. Next to the Kilauea Iki Crater, you'll also see the giant Pu'upua'i Cinder Cone that formed during that same 1959 eruption. In Hawaiian, Pu'upua'i means "gushing hill." It's the perfect example of how Mother Nature forms new mountains.

Even though this trail has a name hard to pronounce, this hike is THE best nature walk in the park. The word "kipuka" in Hawaiian means an older area of vegetation that is surrounded by a recent lava flow.  Think of it like a forest island  surrounded by lava.

W hat you will find here are many beautiful old growth trees with lush tropical vegetation. You will see a huge diversity of rare plants, trees and even animals such as peasants and a type of quail that forage the floors here.

The trail is an easy 1.2-mile loop trail that is located on Mauna Loa Road, just past the Lava Tree Molds Drive. There is parking near the trailhead  and restrooms (vault toilets) at the nearby Kipukapuaulu Picnic Area. The hike should take about 30 minutes and has informative placards for various native plants and trees along the way.

Kilauea Overlook boasts the most dramatic views of Kilauea caldera and Halema'uma'u crater--the "fire pit" or collapsed crater within the caldera. During the 2018 eruption, powerful earthquakes rocked the summit and caused Halema'uma'u crater to collapse. The crater grew from 280 feet deep to about 1,600 feet deep and doubled in width.

In 2019, a first-ever lake of water formed in the crater! But in 2020, it was replaced by a 600-foot deep lake of lava. In 2023, the crater erupted briefly again followed by a period of quiet. However, Kilauea is not finished yet--and chances are, the next time you come back, this summit caldera and its collapsed crater will have changed shape again.

From the overlook, you can take the Crater Rim Trail and hike around the eastern rim of Kilauea.

Stop and stare at a cloud of steam formed from underground water meeting hot volcanic rock.

As soon as you enter this area, you will notice the vegetation looks dead. Pull over to the side of the road to learn about this fascinating thermal hot spot where magma is believed to be just 500 feet below the surface.

Pull over quickly and try to look for South Point in the distance. On clear days you might be able to catch a view.

This app was amazing, highly recommend! They made it super easy to use, gave us directions, tips like restroom stops and where to stop/photo ops, and lots of history and knowledge which allowed us to tour the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park at our own pace but still learned a lot along the way. It was so fun, will now be looking for more Shaka Guide tours for our trip.

Which hawaiian island is the best to visit our 2024 ranking.

Though it can be easy to assume the six most visited Hawaiian Islands offer similar experiences, they are more diverse than you can imagine. From Waimea Canyon to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii’s wealth of natural beauty (think: cerulean waters, verdant vegetation and stunning white sand beaches ) is just waiting to be explored. To help you decide which Hawaiian Island is ideal for your next vacation, U.S. News took into account sights, expert opinion and reader input to determine the best Hawaiian Islands to visit. Vote for your favorite island below to have a say in next year's list.

Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

hawaii volcanoes national park tours from honolulu

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. And if a challenging hike is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more scenic than the Kalalau Trail along the rugged Napali Coast. Just remember to pack galoshes and a rain jacket – Kaua'i is one of Hawaii's rainiest islands.

The island of Hawaii's bevy of one-of-a-kind attractions and family-friendly activities makes it ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed itinerary. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Or, head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to see petroglyphs, ancient Hawaiian fishponds and green sea turtles.

The least-developed island on this list, Moloka'i was made for those who don’t mind going off the beaten path. With lush rainforests, miles of beautiful beaches and some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, Moloka'i is a great place to reconnect with nature, whether you’re staying overnight at one of Moloka'i’s quiet oceanfront cottages – there is only one hotel on the island – or visiting on a day trip from one of the other Hawaiian Islands. Top activities here include soaking up some sun on secluded Papohaku Beach, snorkeling Moloka'i's 28-mile reef or joining a guided cultural hike through Halawa Valley.

Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. On the South Shore, you'll find Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Le'ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument, all in or near the capital city of Honolulu. Meanwhile, the North Shore is home to a more laid-back vibe, as well as the renowned waves at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, which host major surfing competitions every year. After exploring along the coast, head inland to the tranquil Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan.

hawaii volcanoes national park tours from honolulu

For a secluded, nature-centric escape, set your sights on Lana'i. Centrally located between Maui and Moloka'i, this remote hideaway makes a great home base for inter-island travel. Travelers can take a four-wheel-drive vehicle to spots like Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) and Kaunolu Village, a prehistoric fishing village that was once frequented by King Kamehameha I, or spend their days sunbathing on Polihua Beach. In winter, head to Hulopo'e Bay for terrific whale-watching opportunities. Then, make your way to Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), an enchanting rock garden that was once part of a native dryland forest, for a breathtaking Lana'i sunset.

Nahuku Thurston Lava Tube - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

N ahuku Thurston Lava Tube in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one of the most amazing natural wonders you can visit and explore on the Big Island of Hawaii. The short walk provides an amazing opportunity to experience the power of volcanoes and lava tube geology

Nahuku Thurston Lava Tube

The Nahuku Thurston Lava Tubes is one of the most popular things to do at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park !

A visit to the lava tube gives park visitors a unique opportunity to not only learn, but see firsthand more about volcanic geology.

Visitors will also get to experience a canopy of Ohi's Lehua Trees and Hapu'u (fern trees) that dominate the understory of this tropical rainforest that receives over 100 inches of rain each year.

My personal favorite part of visiting the lava tube area is hearing the calls of native birds, both native and non-native. Perhaps if you are lucky, you will get to see one of the rare native species like 'apapane and apakihi. If you are really lucky, maybe you can spot an 'oma'o, a thrush only found on the Big Island of Hawaii!

Nahuku Thurston Lava Tube Trail

Distance: 0.5-mile short trail

Elevation Gain/Loss : Approximately 50 feet

Time : 30 minutes

Trailhead Elevation : 3900'

Trail Difficulty : Easy

One of my favorite parts of this trail is that it is in a cool tropical rainforest, a drastic difference from the sunny, hot, and dry Kona side that most tourists fly into when they go to the Big Island of Hawaii.

Every time I have taken this trail it has either rained or misted so I would count on some sort of precipitation. The lush green foliage is awe-inspiring and the air smells so clean and refreshing.

You can sit and hear the birds chirping although you rarely see one in the dense vegetation. The trail starts off to the right and then starts to descend in a series of switchbacks to the lava tube entrance.

The trail is paved but is not ADA Accessible as it is narrow, steep, and has steps along the way. The entrance is definitely inspiring with lush vegetation surrounding the entrance.

The hike through the lava tube is actually very easy and is only 400' long. The surface of the tube is relatively flat and the National Park Service has put lighting inside the tube making it easy to walk through.

Once you have made it through the lava tube, it is an easy hike back to the beginning of the trailhead through the rainforest.

Where is Thurston Lava Tube?

Nahuku Thurston Lave Tube is located 1.5 miles from the entrance to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park heading south on Crater Rim Drive.

Parking:  There is a parking area across from the entrance to the lava tube. One thing to know is it gets really busy during the middle of the day. You can also park at the Kilauea Iki parking lot.

Restrooms:  are located near the lava tube and are open from 9 am to 5 pm

What is a Lava Tube?

A Lave tube, also known as a Pyrroduct,  is a natural channel created by a river of lava from a volcanic vent that moves beneath a hardened surface of lava.

These tubes are created by the lava flow itself. As the molten lava flows, the outside surface is exposed to the much cooler surface air causing the top layer of lava to harden and turn into Basalt.  Think of how a river freezes in the winter.

This hardened layer essentially acts as insulation to the lava underneath the hardening surface and gets the lava superheated in the core as there is no place for the heat to escape.

This in turn causes the lava to start heating the lower surface of the lava tube and begins a process known as thermal erosion.

As the rock underneath the lava tube heats up, it begins to erode away causing the lava tube to go deeper underneath the newly formed earth's crust just above the tube.

Eventually, the lava flow will stop and the hollow lava tube will be left behind as a reminder of the power of lava and volcanoes.

What does Nāhuku mean?

Nāhuku, the native Hawaiian name means "the protuberances," which refers to the lava drippings that once hung from the lava tube ceiling.

Unfortunately, the lava drippings disappeared due to souvenir collectors after the lava tube was discovered in 1913.

When you visit the lava tube imagine the roof covered in lava stalactites. How amazing would that have been!

How long is Thurston Lava Tube?

The nāhuku lava tube is 600 feet long.

The lava tube varies in height and width.

Don't worry there is more than enough space in this walk-through lava tube. The ceiling height is more than enough to comfortably walk through.

Is Thurston Lava Tube Open?

Yes, The lava tube is open 24 hours a day but the new electrical system that includes 12 energy-efficient amber LED electric lights to illuminate the 400-foot lava tube automatically turns on every day from 8 am until 8 pm.

Overnight Nahuku lava tube is pitch black with no lighting. If you plan to explore the lava tube before the lights turn on make sure to bring a great headlamp and flashlights.

Cell phones do not provide strong enough light to safely hike through the lava tube.

How old is Thurston Lava Tube?

Thurston Lava Tube was created over 550 years ago during an eruption of Kilauea. The eruption produced vigorous streams of lava which left the long, hollow tunnel behind when the river of lava drained away.

The lava tube was discovered in 1913 by Lorrin Thurston who was a local newspaper publisher.

Hiking through Thurston Lava Tube

Trailhead - Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) parking area and Kīlauea Iki Overlook.

Hazards to be aware of - Potential hazards include rockfalls, low ceilings, standing water, tripping hazards, and low light conditions.

On the trail be sure to look for large rocks, tree roots, or any new cracks that may appear along the flat rock floor and trail.

Distance - The trail distance depends on if you park in the lava tube parking area or at the Kīlauea Iki Overlook.

  • 1.5 mi (2.4 km) round-trip walk from Kīlauea Iki Overlook.
  • 6.0 mi (9.7 km) round-trip from Devastation Trailhead (including the Kīlauea Iki loop)

Accessibility -

The trail is paved with handrails but this is not an ADA-accessible trail. The trail is oftentimes wet, is narrow, has several steps, and has several switchbacks to get to the entrance of the Lava Tube. There are several steps to get out of the Lava Tube as well.

The trail inside the lava tube is not paved but is mostly flat.

What to bring with you

Sturdy Shoes - Be prepared for the trail to be wet and slippery.

Flashlight -  If you plan to walk the trail while it is dark a cell phone flashlight is not bright enough to illuminate the lava tube caves.

Camera  -  The photos in this article were taken will my Samsung cell phone. You want to make sure you have a camera that can handle low lighting.

Sweatshirt/Jacket - I know you are in Hawaii but the cool damp rainforest environment can be a bit chilly while walking through the lava tube. The average temperature in the cave is around 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Nearby Things to do in Hawaii Volcanoes

Kilauea Iki Overlook - This overlook is just down from the lava tube parking area. It provides an amazing view over the Kilauea Iki Crater. The crater is 3,000 feet across and a mile long. The floor is 400 feet below the overlook and you can see Mauna Loa in the distance.

Crater Rim Road - Explore Crater Rim Road and check out Uekahuna, Kilauea Overlook, Steaming Bluff (Wahinekapu), Sulphur Banks (Ha'akulamanu), Pu'upua'i Overlook, and Keanakako'i Crater.

Chain of Craters Road - Chain of Craters Road gives you the opportunity to drive down to the Pacific Ocean and see historic lava flows. The road is 18.8 miles to the end of the road. There are no services along the road. At the bottom of the road, you can walk out to see the Holei Sea Arch and explore the Pu'uloa Petroglyph Trail .

Thousands flock to Hawaii Island to view Kilauea eruption. What travelers can expect.

hawaii volcanoes national park tours from honolulu

Thousands are already flocking to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to witness the stunning Kilauea volcano eruption , which started early Wednesday morning.

Over 10,000 visited the park on Wednesday day and night, according to Jessica Ferracane, spokesperson for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

That’s three times typical visitor numbers.

Bystanders can watch fountains of red lava flow out from Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, which for many Hawaiians, is considered sacred .

“Every eruption is unique,” said Ferracane in an email. “This one has filled Halemaʻumaʻu Crater floor with an additional 20 feet of lava, there are more fountains than the one that last from January 6 to March 7 of this year, and currently there is a fissure on the southwest crater wall that looks like a waterfall of lava flowing into the lava lake.”

Learn more: Best travel insurance

The U.S. Geological Survey said the eruption started at around 4:44 a.m.m Wednesday local time, and changed the volcano alert level from “warning” to “watch.” The volcano is often regarded as one of the world’s most active volcanoes, last erupting this past January until March.

Here’s what travelers should expect if they want to see the Kilauea volcano.

Is there any danger posed by the Kilauea eruption?

No, the eruption is currently confined to the crater area that’s already closed to guests, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority on Wednesday afternoon. There is no need to change any travel plans because of the volcano.

As of Thursday, the eruption had not caused any additional closures.

Where is the best place to view the eruption?

The good news is that the eruption is mesmerizing and visible from many vantage points (although weather conditions like fog can affect visibility.)

Some of the best places to view the lava are:

  • Kupina’i Pali, or Waldron Ledge
  • Overlook near Keanakakoi Crater (Beware, this is the most crowded viewing spot.)

How crowded is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park right now?

Very. Expect major delays and long lines of traffic to even enter the park. Parking lots are also packed, including the overflow lots. Some lots were closed at certain points throughout the day.

When is the best time to avoid crowds and visit the park to view the lava?

You’re allowed to visit the park 24 hours a day, but park staff recommend going either before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m. to avoid peak crowds. The busiest time of day will be between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Ferracane suggests going at night. “Imagine watching a bonfire in daylight vs. darkness, and multiply that by 370 acres,” Ferracane said.

If you do go at night, bring a headlamp, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and also dress warmly. Even though you may think it’s always warm in Hawaii, the weather turns cold at night because of the park's high altitude.

How long will the eruption last for?

There’s really no way of knowing, Ferracane said. “We just don't know when it could stop, which is part of the marvel and mystery of living on, and visiting, one of earth's most active volcanoes,” she said.

Bill to regulate Big Island bike tours advances

KELSEY WALLING / TRIBUNE-HERALD / DEC. 30

A tour guide begins an e-bike tour in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

A proposal to impose regulations upon commercial bike tour operators in Hawaii County has advanced despite pushback from bicyclists and tour groups.

County Council Bill 125 began life in January as a simple measure to prohibit bike tour groups from operating on two specific stretches of West Hawaii roads — Kohala Mountain Road and a roughly 8-mile stretch of Akoni Pule Highway between Kohala Mountain Road and Pololu Valley Lookout — due to safety concerns about poor sight lines and limited shoulder space.

But since then, over the course of multiple committee meetings and amendments, the bill has morphed into a more holistic series of code changes that would require bike tour operators to register with the county and allow it to prohibit bike tour groups on any road where their presence would be deemed detrimental to public safety.

The latest incarnation of the bill went before the full Council on Wednesday for its first reading, where it was amended for a fifth time.

As currently written, the bill requires operators to register with the county each year for a first-time fee of $500 and $250 for every subsequent year. Failure to do so will incur a $1,000 fine.

While the earlier drafts of the measure — which were largely focused on road safety in very specific areas — were well supported by residents, the more recent versions have been less popular, particularly among bicyclists. Several tour operators testified against the bill, arguing that it unfairly restricts their businesses.

“This is the exact opposite of what Hawaii should be doing,” wrote Alexander Candelario, owner and founder of Big Island Bike Tours. “If people are not going to be allowed to explore on a bicycle, then they will drive, rent a car, or join a bus or van tour. This not only has more of an impact on roads and highways, but it also negatively impacts the environment, neighborhoods and parking.”

Travis Counsell, president of the Hawaii Bicycling League, wrote that the effort behind the bill would be better spent elsewhere.

“People riding bicycles have the same rights to the road as people driving vehicles across Hawaii,” Counsell wrote. “If a roadway has ‘limited lines of sight and a lack of passable shoulders’ as noted in the bill, the most equitable and effective solution would be to improve road signage, reduce speed limits and conduct more education about everyone’s responsibility to share the road safely.”

Hilo Council member Jenn Kagiwada agreed, saying that the measure seems to fly in the face of the county administration’s commitment to “Complete Streets,” a policy of making all county roads safe and accessible for multiple forms of transportation, not just cars. She suggested the bill appears defeatist in that it identifies unsafe roads only to restrict access to them rather than work to make those roads safer.

On the other hand, Hilo Council member Sue Lee Loy said she supports the intention behind the bill because it puts better regulations upon businesses that rely on county roads to operate.

“They are using our infrastructure to run their commercial enterprises,” Lee Loy said, adding that the bill at least allows for the county to track how many tour groups there are on the island and where they are operating.

The Council voted to pass the bill on first reading, with Kagiwada voting against.

You won’t find these Hawaiian hiking trails in a guidebook

From the beach where hula was said to be born to sacred sites where spirits roam, miles of lesser known trails tell the story of Hawai’i.

A dirt trail with a mountainous cliff to the left and a rocky beach and ocean to the right. There are mountains in the distance.

Hawaiian legend tells the story of the goddess Hi‘iaka , who travels down a dusty trail on the windward coast of the Big Island of Hawai‘i to a beach where she meets her sisters, including Pele, the volcano deity.

And there, on this remote beach in Puna, Hi‘iaka danced what some consider the first hula .

The path to Hā‘ena Beach, also called Shipman Beach, is still intact. Sometimes muddy and slippery, the 2.9-mile trail deposits visitors at an uncrowded shore known for its fine sands amid an otherwise rugged and rocky coast.

A rocky path, surrounded by twisted, leafless, tree trunks. A person in a white bucket hat, a aqua blue shirt, and khakhi shorts is walking down the path in the distance.

During ancient times, this was one of many footpaths ( ala hele ) across the Hawaiian Islands that linked coastal fishing villages. In the mid-1800s the trail was straightened and widened to accommodate horses and wheeled carts.

Eventually, as people moved inland, these seaside settlements were abandoned and the trail neglected. Today few people who venture along the Puna Trail to get to Hā‘ena’s white sands know about its cultural importance. “It doesn’t seem like much,” says Jackson Bauer, who works for Nā Ala Hele Trail and Access Program , which manages public resources related to trail maintenance. “But imagine: Hi‘iaka walked on that trail.”

History of Hawai‘i’s trails

One of the last pieces of legislation approved by Queen Lili‘uokalani, before the controversial overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy , was the Highways Act of 1892 . It states that any trail or road then in existence in Hawai‘i belongs to the government, even on privately owned land. This further implies that these trails—which were used by ancient Hawaiians to gather food, wage battle, get to places of worship, and more—are for public use, accessible to all.

A black and white photo of a woman, dressed in an 1880s style dress with a sash drapped across her upper body. She is also wearing her hair up, with a butterfly clip, and has a thick chocker with an elaborate, silver-dollar-sized bead hanging from the center.

This law came at a critical time for establishing Native Hawaiian land rights. In 1848 the Great Māhele , proposed by King Kamehameha III , redistributed about four million acres of land, abolishing the feudal system and leading to private landownership. Passed before Hawai‘i became a United States territory and state, it ensured that the public—and most importantly, Native Hawaiians—could continue to visit cultural sites.

Thanks to the queen’s foresight, the state now manages hundreds of miles of public trails that lead to heritage areas and native forests or follow meandering streams or tree-lined ridges. While many are now roads and highways—bustling Ala Moana Boulevard on O‘ahu , for example, was a centuries-old footpath that ran along the southern coastline—others are forgotten trails you won’t find in hiking guidebooks. They’re often less popular than the more modern summit or ridge hikes with sweeping views and parking lots. But that’s part of their appeal.

( Explore 3,000-year-old hiking trails on this remarkable Greek island .)

Identifying these footpaths and roads is an element of the Nā Ala Hele program’s job. Staff pore over hand-drawn maps from the 1800s to find evidence of old trails in order to preserve them.

Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail (separately managed, partly by the National Park Service) is a 175-mile network that links communities, temples, fishing areas, and other sites on Hawai‘i. Some parts of the network are thought to have served ali‘i (Hawaiian royalty); other sections were for messengers, who found walking quicker than sailing around parts of the island.

Another trail story tells of a swift runner who departed a village on the island’s northwestern tip for Hilo and returned—about 80 miles each way through the interior of the island—to bring the king a fish from his fishpond; the fish was still alive.

Overlooking a rocky, black and brown, cliff next to the ocean with waves crashing up against the rocks. There are some new grass and trees growing from the black rocks.

“A lot of these ancient trails have been in use for more than a thousand years—and people still use them. That’s the really exciting part,” Bauer says. He points to major roadways on the islands, from the shop-lined Ali‘i Drive in Kailua-Kona on Hawai‘i to Pali Highway on O‘ahu, which connects Honolulu with the island’s windward side.

“There’s so much history along these trails, and we want to keep them alive.”

Walking the path of spirits

When my six-year-old son and I hike along the wild coastline in Ka‘ena Point State Park on O‘ahu, we walk in the footsteps of ancient Hawaiians. The 3.5-mile trail to the point meanders through one of the last intact coastal dune ecosystems in the main Hawaiian Islands.

About 2,000 seabirds, including the Laysan albatross and the wedge-tailed shear-water , use Ka‘ena Point as their breeding grounds. The area is also home to native wildlife, such as the great frigatebird , the red-tailed tropic bird , and the critically endangered Hawaiian monk seals .

( This bird survived Maui’s fires—but it could soon vanish .)

The path before us is lined with native coastal plants like beach naupaka , a shrub with small white flowers; ‘ilima , an indigenous ground cover with yellow flowers often strung in leis; and naio , or false sandalwood. We might pass a family fishing in a moi hole, a gap in the rocky shoreline where moi , or Pacific threadfin, can be found. Across the islands, moi—known for its slightly sweet taste and firm texture—was a fish often reserved for royalty.

I point out to my son places along the coast where his grandparents—my parents, who are at least third-generation kama‘āina (Hawai‘i-born)—would fish for papio (trevally) and even moi. (Restrictions on the fish were eventually lifted.)

A sandy path with green, succulent-like plants on the sides, winds through sand dunes overlooking the ocean.

The point itself is known as leina-a-ka‘uhane , a leaping place of souls, where the spirits of the recently dead could be reunited with their ancestors. Here, the leaping place is a large, sloping rock facing the ocean.

“It’s still there. You can still see it,” says La‘akea Perry, a kumu hula—master teacher of hula—who takes guests of the Four Seasons Resort O‘ahu at Ko Olina on guided tours along the trail to Ka‘ena Point. “When you walk there, it’s like going to somebody’s grave almost. You walk that path knowing that it’s the same path spirits travel to get to their final point.”

A luscious, green, landscape, with puddles of water in the foreground and rainforest covered mountains in the background.

“People lived and died along these trails. They grew crops and accessed the ocean. They did everything here,” says Bauer. “If there’s a trail, then there’s a lot more things nearby that need to be preserved. The trails provide the clues.”
