More about Iceland Holidays & Holiday Itineraries

Is iceland a good holiday destination.

Iceland is a destination like no other, a pure and unpolluted adventure playground waiting for you to explore its natural wonders and immerse in its breathtaking natural scenery.

Why Is Iceland Popular?

Known as the land of fire and ice, Iceland has a lot to offer: from magnificent glaciers, awesome volcanic craters and mountains, geysers and thundering waterfalls, geothermal springs, and the Northern Lights - these are some of the top experiences that attract worldwide tourists, making Iceland one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Arctic.

Why Go to Iceland on Holidays?

Visiting Iceland is an experience out of this world, with unique landscapes which make up for an unforgettable holiday. Whether you are chasing the Northern Lights, whale watching, taking the Golden Circle tour, visiting ice caves, or discovering Reykjavík, Iceland trips are worth booking.

Can You See the Northern Lights on Iceland Tours?

Iceland is one of the most top destinations when it comes to chasing the Northern Lights adventure. You can see the aurora borealis from Reykjavik, the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, or Lake Myvatn - amongst the most popular destinations or book a Northern Lights package holiday that would suit your budget and travel plans.

What Is the Best Month to Go to Iceland?

If you're looking for good weather, the summers months from May to August are ideal for visiting Iceland thanks to the midnight sun and the hot temperatures. However, if your holiday bookings are aimed at experiencing the aurora borealis, then you must know that the Northern Light season starts in late August and lasts until end of April, with the peak months of September and March.

How Many Days Are Enough to Tour Iceland?

In just a week you can explore the highlights of the Icelandic tour, or depending on your time and budget, you can book a tailor-made holiday for as long as you like.

Baltic Travel offers plenty of tours that would allow you to explore Iceland in the best way you see fit. You can book a 8 days activity holiday that takes you right into the heart of Iceland’s nature, allowing you to explore glacier walking, hot springs, river rafting on the White River, horse riding, biking and hiking in the beautiful Þingvellir National Park. Or, you can book our Classic Iceland tour package for 9 days to discover the Icelandic mountains, volcanoes, waterfalls, hot springs and countryside with valleys, glaciers and rivers.

Is Iceland Expensive for a Holiday?

Iceland is an amazing, yet affordable holiday destination. Although some holiday packages can be pricey, there are deals for every pocket, and you will find it is easy to see Iceland on a budget. We are always happy to create a bespoke trip for you!

How Much Does a Holiday to Iceland Cost?

Our holiday packages start from as little as £795 pp for a 4 day holiday to more expensive holidays such as £1,725 pp for 7 days, depending on the holiday destination and type. Make sure to check regularly our holiday packages and choose the holiday type you desire, then use the filter to sort by popularity or price, and you'll find what best suits your preferences.

What Are Iceland's Top Attractions?

No trips to Iceland are complete without visiting Reykjavik , the capital of Iceland, mirroring the surrounding volcanic country side. The most northern capital in the world has nature lying right on its doorstep. Reykjavik gives you the chance to bathe yourself not only in the Northern Lights and the many geothermal pools, but also in the brilliant music and arts scene, not to mention the notorious night life! Trips to Iceland, to this truly modern city providing great food, amazing scenery, museums and shopping facilities have become ever growing in popularity with more packages becoming available by the day. When arranging your Iceland holidays, be sure to ride down the surrounding ski slopes, visit the immense concrete wonder that is Hallgrimskirkja and enjoy the unmissable and panoramic view of the city from its 73-metre-high church tower. Be part of history in the beautiful wooden Hofdi House, and stand in the space where Reagan and Gorbachev in effect ended the Cold War. A visit to the Saga Museum in Reykjavik, will provide you with insight in Viking history and the Icelandic Sagas, one of which is said to have inspired J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings. Enjoy a concert in the impressive Harpa Concert and Conference Centre or take a 40 minute drive out of the city and submerge yourself in the mineral rich, thermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon, as popular for Summer Holidays to Iceland as for Iceland winter holidays .

Leave the city behind and travel further into Iceland's dramatic landscape, and see for yourself how the ancient battle between ice and fire still continues to this day, through the immense power outlets of raging water falls, gurgling whirlpools, active volcanoes and geysers ejecting their jet-like eruptions of hot water metres into the air.

What To Do in Iceland?

Iceland has been voted one of the top 10 destinations worldwide for whale watching , but if you prefer to go deep, you can experience some of the best and most challenging dives around, as you swim, snorkel or dive through waters of amazing visibility around the only geothermal underwater chimneys in the world, another popular activity among those arranging trips to Iceland. Want to stay dry? Try your hand at ice climbing, arctic rafting on the Hvita river or take a snowmobile across the Langjokull Glacier. At Thingvellir National Park in Iceland, you can watch the Gullfoss waterfall tumble 32 metres down or walk between the American and European tectonic plates at this Unesco heritage site, the place of Iceland's first National Assembly dating back to 930 AD. When selecting from our range of Iceland holiday packages, be sure to consider experiencing the crevasse-riddled outlet glacier of Solheimajokull and enjoy this magnificent frozen wonder with its ice formations and sink holes. Hike through Laugavegurinn amid endless hours of summer daylight and even more breathtaking scenery.

During your trips to Iceland, ensure you also visit Europe's largest National Park, Vatnajokull, and its blue iced glacier, gurgling whirlpools and cascading waterfalls. For the adventurous individuals, we can highly recommend a caving trek in lava caves and craters. An honourable mention must however go to the four legged part of this remarkable nation, the Icelandic horse. This sure-footed, much admired and immensely strong little horse cannot only carry a very heavy burden, but is an integral part of Icelandic society and history. It is a living national treasure, loved and respected by all. They are anybody's to ride and have a special gait that makes it almost impossible for anyone not to enjoy the ride. So if you want a truly authentic way of seeing this country, let this intelligent, people loving, little horse lead you on a highly recommended adventure.

iceland tour package philippines

Thanks for your email, everything went very well on the trip.

The package we received was very detailed and made travelling around very simple.

The accommodation was exceptional at each location, I have included a few photos (out of 100’s taken!) that may be of interest

Thanks for arranging everything and I’ll be recommending you to friends who are interested in travelling to Iceland.

We would like to thank you for the card and bottle of prosecco on our arrival. It was a lovely surprise for Steve, and the hotel gave a complementary cocktail as well. The hotel was very good brilliantly postioned for activities and sightseeing. The trips were amazing we loved them. It gave us a good insight into Iceland.

Flights with Easyjet were good and pickups well organised.

Thank you for your care and help in the arrangements.

best wishes

We had an amazing time thank you. We were just so lucky with the weather, 4 days of glorious blue skies which meant not only were our photos amazing but we were able to do so much more up on the Glaciers, that is a first on my visits to Iceland, 4 days in a row of blue skies.

The Northern lights were not Playing along, no sightings on our organised trip so we booked another when we were there and saw them a little bit, but we all know that’s what makes them special, waiting to see if they show up or not.

Our accommodation was really good, such a sweet little boutique hotel and everything in Reykjavik was walking distance from it.

Kind Regards

Hello Julija,

We are home having had a lovely holiday in Iceland. Thank you very much for organising this and for helping us out so efficiently  with the logistics over the bus and hotel staff strike on the last day. However the strike was abandoned at the last minute.

The only comment we have is the quality of the Hotel Cabin. It was in effect more like a hostel for schools with several school parties were indeed there. The food was also in keeping with a hostel stopover. The rooms were tiny with literally no space for the luggage and some rooms don’t even have a window to the outside. It might be good to warn people who book holidays with a stopover in Reykjavík  such that they could opt for a better quality (although probably more expensive) hotel if they wish.

With best wishes

There are only a few destinations worldwide that have enraptured me with their mind-blowing beauty — and among my extraordinary trips to Antarctica and the Faroe Islands , the country of Iceland is now high up on this list! (Iceland Itinerary)

…Though of course, I must admit: when I was first planning my Iceland itinerary, I was a bit skeptical that the hype for it might be just a fluke and I will end up not only disappointed but also broke (besides, it IS famous for being an expensive getaway). Nevertheless, I was thankfully wrong: Iceland is truly worth the hype, the money, and more!

Speaking of such ‘hype’, I’m sure you are already aware of this, but Iceland has been constantly hitting headlines and topping bucket lists for years now as it repeatedly gains the favor of its visitors (including me). All of that attention is fairly well-placed because even if Iceland is a small Nordic island nation, it is filled to the brim with dramatic landscapes full of hot springs, glaciers, geysers, lava fields, and volcanoes among many others.

In fact, you can just take one look at the photos and videos online and offline and they will already speak multitudes of its wonders — so imagine what it could be like when you see everything in flesh!

With all that said and done, if you’re now bitten by the travel bug and also hoping to make things happen, below is a suggested Iceland itinerary that you can do for 10 days.

10 days because I deem it as the most optimal time for exploring Iceland’s famous “Ring Road” (Route 1) — which is basically their main road that goes all around the island at about 1,300 kilometres. Technically, you can drive the whole of this Ring Road in just less than 24 hours but in order to see all the key spots, you need at least a week. In order to have some ample time, 10 days is the most optimal. (Of course, if you stay longer, the better it will be!)

Anyhow, you can easily tweak the 10-day Iceland itinerary below if you happen to have longer or lesser days ahead, so no worries about that!

Iceland Travel Guide

» best time to visit.

Iceland’s location grants fluctuating weather throughout the year — which could either be a boon or a bane. In fact, during my trip, I’ve come to experience all four seasons in just a day! ( NOTE : My visit was around the middle of October).

Anyhow, there is actually never a bad time to go and visit Iceland. In a way, it all just boils down to what your priorities or preferences are. For an overview, below are its seasons:

  • Winter: Aside from colder temperatures (that can go as low as -30°C) you must also expect shorter days and some wind chill. It’s great for hunting bright Northern Lights, grabbing the lowest prices, and seeing lesser crowds but be wary of the fact that most highland roads can be impassable if not dangerous.
  • ★ Spring: Days are now longer and you’ll even get to see greener landscapes with lesser snow. This is one of the best times to visit Iceland given that is ‘shoulder season’ (when prices are still lower and tourists are fewer). Weather will still be erratic at times — but it’s better than winter and you can still catch the Northern Lights until early April. An added bonus is the cute puffins who start to arrive in Iceland around April for their annual nesting.
  • Summer: This is the peak season with higher prices and more people — which is no wonder because the weather is mild, the landscapes are at their greenest, and the days are longer, including the Summer Solstice wherein daylight can last for about 21 hours! The Northern Lights start to show in late August too.
  • ★ Autumn: You will love Iceland as it is bathed in hues of orange, red, and yellow! Temperatures will start to get slightly cooler but there will be fewer crowds with lower prices (as it is also off-season). Again, Northern Lights can be seen at this time if you are lucky. If you want a bit of snow that is still ‘comfortable’ for driving, this is a great time to go too; after all, I loved the feeling when I suddenly went through mountain passes that are all clad in white!

OTHER TIPS :

  • Northern Lights in Iceland typically start to show in late August to early April.
  • Weather is really unpredictable so make sure that you are prepared for the cold and for possible wind chills.
  • For the most part, temperatures don’t go higher than 20°C in the day.
  • WINTER: Dec to Feb
  • SPRING: March to May
  • SUMMER: June to Aug
  • AUTUMN: Sept to Nov

» Getting in to Iceland

By air. International visitors will land at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) which is an hour away from Reykjavik. Most airlines that offer great fares to the country are Icelandair and WOW Air. (NOTE: Iceland also has another airport called Reykjavik Airport (RKV) but it is mostly used for domestic flights as well as international flights to the Faroe Islands and Greenland only.)

When searching for flights, I highly recommend browsing through Skyscanner to find the best deals from your point of origin. You will find that most flights from key points in Europe will be below $100. (If you’re from the Philippines like me, though the cost is mostly at Php 50,000, it is possible to get Php 25,000 roundtrip flights especially if you book during the offseason.)

From KEF, you can get to the city center of Reykjavik by bus or taxi. You can also rent a car and there are several shops at the airport where you can purchase one (otherwise, it’s best to book online beforehand ).

  • By bus : Flybus (ISK 2,900), Grayline (ISK 2,500), and Airport Express (ISK 2,100) can drop you off at the Reykjavik bus terminal. They can also bring you directly to your hotel in Reykjavik for a higher charge of around ISK 3,000 to 4,000. There’s also a cheaper option by taking the public bus system called “Strætó”. Just look for bus 55 at the airport’s departures area and they would indicate their stops and arrival times (but it’s often infrequent, so you can check the times online ) with the last stop at BSI Umferðarmiðstöðin, which is Reykjavik’s main bus terminal. Tickets cost about ISK 1,800 which you can pay for on the bus or purchase beforehand at the Airport Information Desk.
  • By taxi : Be wary that a metered taxi from the airport can cost about ISK 15,000 so it’s best to ride the bus, get a shared transfer, or get your own rental car.
  • By shared transfer : If you don’t have a rental car, this is the next best thing for you! Check out the shared transfer services on this link .
  • By private transfer : For a more hassle-free experience, you can also choose to book a private transfer .

By boat. There is a boat called Smyril Line that does a weekly service from Hirtshals, Denmark. In just 2 nights, it will sail to Seyðisfjörður via Torshavn in the Faroe Islands. Once in Seyðisfjörður, you can fly directly to Reykjavik local airport or get a bus to Egilsstaðir (and then another bus to Akureyri; but this latter option is costlier compared to the cheaper flights from Egilsstaðir to Reykjavík).

» Visa for Iceland

Since Iceland is a part of the Schengen member states, you can check this list of countries to see who does NOT need tourist visas to enter the country. Naturally, if you’re NOT a citizen of any of the listed countries, you will then need to apply for a tourist visa in the Iceland embassy that’s near you.

If you’re a Philippine citizen like me, you can read my guide on ‘ How to Apply for a Schengen Visa ‘ (FYI: The Norwegian Embassy in the Philippines handles visa applications for Iceland.)

  • Check full visa requirements here as per your nationality.

» Where to Stay (Iceland Accommodations)

To search for the best hotel accommodation in Iceland at the best prices, I suggest cross-checking hotel prices between Agoda and Booking.com . But if you’re rather interested in renting comfortable houses or apartments, you should search through AirBnB .

» Iceland Currency

The country uses Icelandic króna (ISK) wherein €1 equals about ISK 140~, USD $1.20~ or Php 60~ (this is as of June 2021) . However, most places and shops also accept payment in US dollars, Euro, Canadian dollars, as well as Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish currencies. Though if I may point out, most people just pay by card (credit or debit) because most establishments accept it — even taxis. Therefore, it is not totally necessary to carry large amounts of Icelandic currency.

But then again, it also helps to have some cash on hand in case of emergencies. So when exchanging your money, I highly advise that you do NOT exchange it at the airport since the rates there are not competitive. So what should you rather do? Either exchange your money at a bank or at a money exchanger in your home country or in the city center of Reykjavik. You can also just withdraw from an ATM with your debit/credit card ( but do one big withdrawal to minimize fees with your bank).

» Cost of Travel in Iceland

Iceland is an expensive destination — even higher than in other parts of Europe and this is mainly due to high import duties and a high VAT rate. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank in order to enjoy the country especially if you travel frugally (check out the next section for top money-saving tips).

To give you an idea, you should expect to travel in Iceland with an average daily cost of about USD $75~ per person on a budget, or at least $180~ if you want to experience more comfort on activities, tours, hotels, and more. (Values below show low budget to medium budget ranges).

  • Hotels: $35 to $150 USD / day
  • Food: $13 to $30 USD / day
  • Fun: $15 to $40 USD / day
  • Transport: At least $25 / day

» Money-Saving Tips in Iceland

To make the most of your Iceland itinerary, remember the following things:

  • When it comes to tipping, you do NOT have to worry about it because, in a sense, gratuity already comes together with the cost that you’ll be paying for.
  • Most of the meals that they serve in restaurants are big, so it can be a smart move to split it with your friend to save on costs.
  • To further save on food, it’s best to shop for it in supermarkets (NOT convenience stores). For this, look out for the Bónus or Krónan shops because they have considerably lower prices than the other supermarkets.
  • There’s NO need for you to buy water at the store because tap water in Iceland is totally safe and drinkable.
  • If in case you need some added warm layers to your wardrobe, there are good second-hand shops like Red Cross and Salvation Army at Reykjavik’s downtown.
  • Speaking of clothing, it’s always a smart move to pack a windbreaker or a waterproof jacket/raincoat because rain can happen sporadically (not to mention that the waterfalls can get you wet) .
  • If you plan to go camping or if you have a camper van for your Iceland itinerary, there are sites all over the country where you can stay for the night and enjoy fully-equipped facilities (showers, laundry, kitchen, etc.). The cost for this usually spans from ISK 500 to 1,000 a night. Just take note that it can get really cold so pack up on thermal wear and warm sleeping bags.
  • For some peace of mind, other than your GPS, it also helps to have a pocket WiFi on hand. It not only helps you stay connected but it’s also helpful for sharing a connection among you and your friends. On the other hand, you can buy a local SIM card at the airport’s duty-free store.
  • It’s always good practice to get travel insurance for your trip, more so when you’re going through a wild place like Iceland. To avail, I would highly recommend SafetyWing because they offer the best price and coverage.
  • Recreational drones are still allowed in Iceland without a permit, but you must take note of the rules such as NO flying it in areas where there is a no-fly drone sign, NO flying beyond 130 meters, and NO flying near airports, crowds of people, and government buildings.
  • Plug type C is the plug that has two round pins and plug type F is the plug that has two round pins, with two earth clips on the side.

» How to Get Around Iceland

Going around by car currently offers the most flexibility and practicality for travel around Iceland — it’s fairly expensive but it will save you the time and the hassle, as well as give you enough opportunities to control your itinerary and see more sights along the way!

By car. You can expect to pay no less than $500 for a week rental in the peak season with day rates starting usually at $30. As for gas, it’s also expensive in the country at $2 per liter. (To rent a car beforehand, book online ). As an example, for my 10-day road trip, I got a Hyundai i30 Estate for $610, and my gas totaled a cost of about $400. If you want to travel on a budget without shelling money for accommodations, you can opt to rent a camper van. As for some other driving matters that you need to take note of…

  • If you want to save time, I highly suggest booking online beforehand . Otherwise, you can get a rental at the airport itself; but be wary when you’re coming during peak season because the car you want might not be available due to the high number of visitors.
  • Gas stations are easy to find around major towns but they become less frequent (at 100 to 200km apart) as you go on your Ring Road trip. Hence, it’s always advisable to fill up when you can. The gas stations operate 24 hours and are self-service with payments done only by credit card. However, if you have a credit card that does not have a PIN number, you will need to find a gas station that has an attendant so that you can process your payment with them inside.
  • Driving in Iceland is on the right side of the road and it is mandatory to have your headlights on at all times (yes, even during the day). Speed limits on highways are at 90km/h on paved roads and 80km/h on gravel roads.
  • Speaking of gravel roads, there could be parts in the east or north of Iceland where the road suddenly changes into gravel; therefore, please mind your speed at all times to avoid accidents.
  • When you’re mapping out your day-to-day route, apart from GPS, you can also just use Google Maps because it will show in detail the fastest route you can go to.
  • There are single-lane bridges on the highways of the Ring Road and whoever is the closest to it has priority when crossing the bridge.
  • As I’ve already mentioned, weather can change drastically in a day in Iceland. So it always helps to check the website Road.is
  • If you don’t want to drive, there’s the option of carpooling through websites like Samferda . Naturally, expect that it can be a hit or miss. This is more ideal if you don’t have any time constraints and are not sticking to an itinerary.
  • You can watch this helpful video to learn more about driving in Iceland.

By bus. There is no railway system in Iceland but there is a bus system. Take note, however, that they are still quite expensive and infrequent. One popular option with buses is the “Full Circle Passport” which enables you to travel the Ring Road and it costs about ISK 40,000.

However, it is often only available in the summer and you have to choose which way you travel (clockwise or counterclockwise) because there is no going back and forth. You can choose from buses like BSI , Gray Line , Discover Iceland , Sterna , and Trex . (They also have other unlimited ride and route options, one example of which is the Hop On and Hop-Off Bus Passport ). Another option is to join day tours or sightseeing companies.

» Safety in Iceland

According to the Global Peace Safety Index, Iceland has been voted as the safest country in the world for more than 10 years in a row now… and I gotta agree. I have never felt unsafe there so it’s also great for solo travelers — however , this is NO excuse to get too complacent. ‘Little crime’ does not mean ‘no crime’, so stay vigilant and be “street smart” by using your common sense at all times.

  • HOW TO: Find the right travel insurance for you

» Top Icelandic Food

Icelandic cuisine predominantly makes use of fish, lamb, or some other type of meat. Rest assured, if you’re a vegetarian there are places in Reykjavik like AALTO Bistro, Glo, Pylsa/Pulsa, and Vinyl where you can dine in. Anyhow, some of the things that you must try for your Iceland itinerary are…

  • Any Icelandic fish like Haddock, Halibut, Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and more.
  • Hákarl = Traditional dish of fermented shark for the adventurous
  • Harðfiskur = Dried parts of fish that are eaten as a snack together with butter
  • Hangikjöt = Smoked lamb
  • Kjötsúpa = Rich lamb soup
  • Skyr = You’ll find these in supermarkets. It’s basically a famous Icelandic brand of yogurt-like dairy product that is in flavored and unflavoured varieties
  • Slátur = Sausage made from the offal of sheep as well as its blood
  • Pylsa = Basically a hot dog. You should check out a spot called ‘Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur’ in Reykjavik for the best pylsa
  • Beers = Examples of local brands are Bruggsmiðjan, Egils, Gæðingur Öl, and Vífillfell
  • If you want to try something with higher alcohol content, check out Brennivín (or “Black Death”) a local spirit

» Helpful Icelandic Phrases

Icelandic is the national language but most of the locals can speak English (and even Danish) given that both are compulsory to be learned in schools. Anyhow, it always helps to know an Icelandic phrase or two!

Other F.A.Q.

It is not common in Iceland to tip, nor is it expected. But of course, they wouldn’t decline it if you wish to be generous; just simply round up your bill or give 5% to 10% extra.

Iceland typically uses type C (two round pins) and type F (two round pins with two earth clips on the side). The country operates on a 230V voltage and a frequency of 50Hz.

Please check their  latest travel advisories  page for more details.

All visitors to Iceland must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the period of their intended stay (as well as have 2 blank pages).

Iceland has adopted the EU drone laws; as such, it is legal to fly your drone there as long as you follow the rules stated here .

10-Days Iceland Itinerary

NOTE: The following sections are in a tabbed format; so, in order to see the next day’s contents, just click the headings. Also, ‘Day 1’ is a full day so it does NOT take into consideration your flight arrival. As such, please plan accordingly.

I also made the Iceland itinerary below into 10 days because I deem it as the most optimal time for exploring the famous “Ring Road” (Route 1) — which is basically the main road that goes all around the island at about 1,300 kilometers. . Technically, you can drive the whole of this Ring Road in just less than 24 hours; but, in order to see all the key spots, you need at least a week. Explore the capital of Reykjavik

Iceland Itinerary: Reykjavik

Jumpstart your Iceland itinerary in the vibrant capital of Reykjavik! Some key places that you must NOT miss out for your Iceland itinerary’s first day are the following. Unfortunately, it will NOT be possible to see everything below in one day so choose wisely!

  • Árbæjarsafn . This is a historical open-air museum that aims to give some insight into the living conditions of the people of Reykjavik back in the earlier times. (NOTE: Opens from June to August only). .
  • City Hall and Tjörnin (The Pond) . Just north of Lake Tjornin is this modern glass building which is a great example of the late 20th century in Iceland. The surroundings also serve as a tranquil oasis for doing picnics (weather permitting) and for admiring the scenery. .
  • ★ Hallgrímskirkja Church . This is an iconic Lutheran parish church in the capital that rises at a height of 74.5 meters and you will love its unique design. It is possible to go inside for free but if you want great panoramic views, it is possible to climb the tower but you will have to do so for a fee of ISK 700. .
  • Harpa Concert Hall . Yet another architectural wonder, this concert hall and conference center has a distinctive colored glass facade and it serves as the home of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. .
  • NOTE : If you rather want a guided tour for hunting the Northern Lights on your Iceland itinerary, you can choose to join a… – Northern Lights Boat Tour – Northern Lights Car Tour .
  • ★ Horse riding . Apparently, the Icelandic horse which is known for its pony-like stature and long mane is the only breed in the country so it is strictly regulated. Not only are they forbidden to be imported but if by chance they are, they’re not allowed to return. For a memorable experience, it is possible to do horseback riding tours or lessons in the outskirts of Reykjavik by booking online . .
  • Icelandic Phallological Museum . This might be a bit of an odd suggestion but it’s quite a unique spot. As the name suggests, this is a museum that features penises and penile parts of different animals such as whales, seals, and others. ( TRIVIA : It’s the world’s largest display for this kind of thing). .
  • Saga Museum . This is a waxwork Viking museum that depicts the key moments in Icelandic history. As you go through the museum, there are audio guides available in several languages and you can even put on some Viking costumes. .
  • ★ Sun Voyager . Found near Sæbraut road, this is a sculpture made by Jón Gunnar Árnason representing a dreamboat that’s said to convey the promise of undiscovered territory. This usually serves as a great photo spot, especially during sunrises and sunsets — more so when there happen to be Northern Lights in the sky. .
  • NOTE : You can also join this Golden Circle tour for your Iceland itinerary that makes a stopover at the Secret Lagoon where you can take a dip! .
  • Visit green spaces. There are numerous parks and gardens in the city including Grótta, Hallargarður, Hljómskálagarður, the City Hall (as previously mentioned), as well as Klambratún or Miklatún. .
  • NOTE : To join a whale watching tour , reserve your spot online. (If you want to join other options see: dolphin tours / puffin tours ). .
  • ★ …Or just walk around! The capital can be easily explored on foot and I loved walking through Old Reykjavik’s colorful houses and lush gardens. If you’re up for shopping, don’t forget to drop by Laugavegur as well as Bankastræti, Austurstræti, Lækjargata, and Skólavörðustígur. TRIVIA: You will find street names in the city that stem from Nordic Religion such as Freya’s Street (Freyjugata), Loki’s Path (Lokastígur), Thor’s Street (Þórsgata), and many others!

“Should I go to the Blue Lagoon on this 1st day?” Sure, if you really want to! HOWEVER, I suggest that you do it at the end of your Iceland itinerary (so I’ll be featuring it on tab ‘Day #10’) . You might be wondering: why at the end? Well aside from the fact that it’s far from the city center and nearer to the airport, I think you will love how relaxed you would feel when you end your whole Ring Road trip by soaking in its healing waters to wash away all your fatigue. I just really think that it’s fitting, and when I did this, I was so ready to hop on my flight and sleep soundly!

TIPS FOR THE DAY: – Spend the night today in Reykjavik. You can see this list for the best accommodations or places to stay in. – Check out the list of Icelandic dishes that I listed under the ‘ Pre-Travel Guide ‘ above so that you can take note of the food and drinks that you need to try while in Reykjavik. If you’ve got some time, check by Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur to taste their famous hotdogs! Some other top restaurants you can try are Grillmarkadurinn, Fiskfelagid, Kopar or Dill. – Make sure that you have your pocket WiFi or SIM card working, if not your car’s GPS. – Like I’ve said multiple times already, given that Iceland is an expensive country, it’s a wise choice to buy and cook your own food so make sure that you do your grocery shopping today. – It’s also best to buy an emergency lunch pack in case you can’t find a restaurant during tomorrow’s Iceland itinerary road trip.

Start the Ring Road trip!

View this post on Instagram

It is possible to do the Golden Circle today (a popular short tourist route looping from Reykjavik and back) but it’s preferable to do it in the last days of your Iceland itinerary together with the Blue Lagoon stopover. So for today, I recommend that you start your Ring Road trip instead to the south with your final destination as the seafront village of Vík. During this journey, below are some stopovers that you can make.

TRIVIA : Did you know that there are over 10,000 waterfalls (foss) in Iceland? Due to its north Atlantic climate and Arctic location, it experiences frequent rain and snow so there are large glaciers that feed the rivers when the warmer days come. All of these factors then result in the country’s large amount of waterfalls!
  • Seljalandsfoss Waterfall . This will be your first introduction to Iceland’s grand waterfalls and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed! As one of the country’s most famous ‘ foss ‘, it has a drop of 60 meters. Plus, it is the kind of waterfall that can be fully encircled, meaning that you can walk in front and behind it. Whenever you start to feel cold, don’t worry, there’s a nearby stall that sells hot coffee and chocolate. There are also free toilets for your use. NOTE: Don’t forget to put on a waterproof jacket or raincoat because the strength of the waterfall is quite strong and you can get really wet from its mist. There is also a nearby waterfall called Gljúfrabúi that you can check out in case you want to avoid the crowds. .
  • ★ Skógafoss Waterfall . This is one of Iceland’s biggest and most beautiful waterfalls with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters. When I first saw it, I was absolutely in awe and it became even more of a beaut when I walked closer to it (be prepared to get drenched!). If the conditions are right, you can even see a huge rainbow in front of Skogafoss! But before leaving this spot, don’t forget to climb the staircase beside the waterfalls for a different kind of view. .
  • Solheimasandur Plane Crash . Ever seen those Instagram photos where people stand on top of a plane wreck in Iceland? Well, this is that spot. Back in 1973, this US Navy DC plane crashed on the beach of Sólheimasandur. Everyone survived but the remains of the aircraft are still left on this black sand beach which now makes for an epic spot to shoot in. There used to be a time wherein you were allowed to drive to this DC plane but it is now forbidden to do so. Nowadays, you need to park your car in the designated parking area and then walk up to it — which is an 8km walk (roundtrip). It can take a while so I would only propose that you do this if you have the time and if the weather is good. .
  • Dyrhólaey . This used to be called ‘Cape Portland’ and it is a small yet picturesque promontory or a high point of the land on road 218. You can drive all the way to it (to reach the lower part) or make a right turn on the hill (to reach the higher part). Please just note that this spot can have limited access in spring or summertime. .
  • ★ Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach . When I first viewed these basalt rock columns, I found it hard to believe that they are NOT man-made — so yes, it is all the work of mother nature! Found on the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, its unique rock cliff is called Gardar (NOT Reynisdrangar which are the basalt cliffs found in the near distance of the same shore and which have also been featured on Game of Thrones). Accordingly, these basalt rock columns were shaped when the lava that fell down from the Reynisfjall mountain cooled and contracted at a slow rate. It’s quite tough to imagine how but when you think about it, nature sure is amazing!

OTHER STOPOVER OPTIONS: » Hike Sólheimajökull Glacier . Found near Solheimasandur Plane Crash, this is an outlet glacier of the icecap of Mýrdalsjökull and there are regular guided glacier walks that are being done here which you can join by booking online . » Do the Fimmvörðuháls pass hiking route . Located on the east of Skogafoss, this 22km trail is one of Iceland’s most famed hikes since it takes you along Skógá river, between two glaciers (Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull) a nd into Þórsmörk valley.

TIPS FOR THE DAY: – Spend the night today in Vik or somewhere near. You can check Agoda or Booking.com for the best accommodations or places to stay in. Otherwise, look into AirBnB for cheaper options. Based on my vlogs above, you’ll see that I stayed in this AirBnB in Hvolsvöllur which is an hour away from Vik. – Like I’ve said multiple times already, given that Iceland is an expensive country, it’s a wise choice to buy and cook your own food; so go and make sure that you still have enough groceries. – It’s also best to buy an emergency lunch pack in case you can’t find a restaurant during tomorrow’s Iceland itinerary road trip. – Check your gas. If you’re not up for refilling your tank, make sure to take note of tomorrow’s route to see if there are gas stations on the way.

Onwards to the East

Iceland Itinerary: Ring Road

Today, we will slowly head towards Hofn. Along the way, you will find amazing attractions such as…

  • Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon . This is an impressive canyon that is about 100 meters deep and 2 kilometers long. With sheer walls and a narrow serpentine cavern, it will amaze you to know that Fjaðrárgljúfur’s bedrock is mostly from the Ice Age so it’s about 2 million years old! To date, flying a drone is still allowed here so it will make for some great footage too. .
  • TRIVIA : This waterfall actually inspired the architect who made the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavik!
  • NOTE : If you want to witness the tallest waterfall in Iceland (at 228 meters) , you will find that it’s just near this spot and it’s called Morsárfoss. Unfortunately, it’s quite difficult to reach since you will need to hike over a moving glacier. It is still possible to reach but you will need a local guide for it. .
  • TRIVIA : You can witness seals year-round, but you can find hundreds of them here in the winter! Additionally, a number of films have been shot in and around Jokulsarlon such as Tomb Raider, Batman Begins, Interstellar, and James Bond movies too. .
  • Diamond Beach . Located just on the other side of the road opposite Jökulsárlón. This is basically a black sand beach in which smaller chunks of icebergs from Jokulsarlon glacier would wash up ashore. This would then make for a dazzling view, making it a favorite among photographers.

Based on my vlogs above, you’ll rather see that I stayed in this AirBnB in Djupivogur which is an hour away from Hofn.

A Scenic Coastal Drive

You will love driving through this Iceland itinerary route today because it will wind down through the coast and up to some scenic mountain passes (that could feature some snow or even some magical snowfall!). So make sure your road trip playlist is ready and take note of the following sights on the way…

  • ★ Stokksnes Peninsula . The Stokksnes peninsula is one of Iceland’s first settlements and it’s a tranquil landscape that features one of the most breathtaking mountains in Iceland: Vestrahorn. Towering at 454 meters and surrounded by a stunning lagoon and black sand beaches, it will surely make for a good photography spot. .
  • Búlandstindur . A beautifully shaped mountain with a pyramid-like form that towers at 1,069 meters between the bays of Berufjörður and Hamarsfjörður. .
  • NOTE : Since the Oxi Pass is a mountain pass, take note that you’ll be driving through a gravel mountain road which is often clad in snow and/or fog. It’s best to avoid this shortcut during your Iceland itinerary when the weather is bad; but thankfully, the weather that I had during my visit to Iceland was great so I had the chance to go through it. Mind you, it was extremely magical especially when the snow started to fall! Just be cautious though because the road can get steep, if not narrow — either way, even if I’m not much of an experienced driver, I found it relatively comfortable to drive through. .
  • TIP : Along the road to or from Seyðisfjörður is Gufufoss which is the largest waterfall in the area.

OTHER STOPOVER OPTIONS: » Hengifoss Waterfall . If you’re still not tired of chasing waterfalls in your Iceland itinerary, you can visit Hengifoss which is the 3rd highest waterfall in Iceland! Please just note that it takes an hour (one-way) to get to the falls but it will definitely be worth it! (Nearby you will also find Lagarfljót lake and Hallormsstaðarskógur forest).

TIPS FOR THE DAY: – During Northern Lights season, this area is famous for showing a lot of activity; so if you’re up for it, I recommend doing some random night driving to spot some Aurora Borealis. – Spend the night today in Egilsstadir. You can check Agoda or Booking.com for the best accommodations or places to stay in. Otherwise, look into AirBnB for cheaper options. Based on my vlog above, I stayed in this amazing AirBnB called as Stóri-Bakki Country Cottage .

Explore the Diamond Circle

Iceland Itinerary: Diamond Circle

The Diamond Circle is a famed sightseeing route within the Ring Road and it has these 4 main attractions: Lake Myvatn, Dettifoss, Asbyrgi, and Husavik.

  • NOTE : This spot can be easily accessed from the east and west side of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon wherein you can choose either road 864 (gravel road) or road 862 (paved until the parking spot of Dettifoss). Obviously, 862 is the better option. Moreover, within Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, you can find other waterfalls like Selfossa and Hafragilsfoss. .
  • Dimmuborgir . A large expense that has been shaped by lava fields; therefore, you will find here numerous volcanic caves and rock formations. There’s also a big hole on the rocks at the end of the path that makes for a good photo spot. (NOTE: It’s possible to do some hikes here, and if you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you’ll be thrilled to know that this has been used as the wildling camp of Mance Raider.)
  • Namafjall Geothermal Area. Found at the foot of this volcanic mountain is a huge area of hot springs called Hveraröndor Hverir. This area is quite famous due to its sulfurous boiling mud springs (called solfataras) and steam springs (called fumaroles). It can get quite smelly here but you’ll definitely be in awe with its gigantic mud craters and huge fumes. Please just remember to stay on track because if you don’t, you will be at the risk of getting too close to the boiling soil or hot fumes.
  • Grjótagjá Cave. This is a small lava cave with a thermal spring inside, and it certainly has an otherwordly beauty. It’s no wonder then that this has also been a filming spot in Game of Thrones (where Jon Snow and Ygritte had an intimate time.)
  • Hverfell or Hverfjall . This is one of the largest explosion craters in the world with a diameter of 1,000 meters and a depth of 140 meters. The rim of this volcano is accessible by two paths so you can walk up and encircle it.
  • Myvatn Nature Baths. This place is similar to the famous Blue Lagoon given its geothermal heated pools as well as man-made steam baths and lagoons. It’s quite cheaper too, but if I have to choose between the two for an Iceland itinerary, I’d pick the Blue Lagoon for its size and amenities. Nevertheless, if you want a smaller and cheaper option with a lesser crowd, this is a good option. .
  • Godafoss . This is the 4th largest waterfall in Iceland with a height of 12 meters and a width of 30 meters. Its name either means waterfall of the gods or waterfall of the ‘godi’ (priest/chieftain) which is quite well-fitting because it is a beauty. As such, it’s a worthy stopover for your Iceland itinerary. .
  • NOTE : Nearby is a distinctive cluster of columnar rock formations that stand at the entrance to Vesturdalur (a lush mountainous valley) and it’s called Hljóðaklettar. .
  • Húsavík . A town on the north coast which is famous not only for its wooden church of Húsavíkurkirkja but also for its whale watching opportunities that is considered to be one of the best in Europe.

OTHER STOPOVER OPTIONS: » Explore Akureyri . This is Iceland’s 2nd largest urban area after the Capital Region and you’ll be staying in this scenic fjord town for the night. When you have the time, you can check out the following:

  • Akureyri Church. Built in 1940, it has fascinating stained-glass windows that portray scenes from Icelandic Christian history.
  • Akureyri Botanical Garden. This is a great spot in the spring given its wide variety of both Icelandic and foreign flora.
  • TIP : Don’t forget to climb up its fairytale tower to see the world’s biggest Christmas calendar.
  • Laufas Turf Houses . Also called as Laufas Museum, it’s a great exhibition that shows prototypes of Iceland’s old architectural heritage: the turf houses. These structures were made to withstand difficult climates while offering superior insulation.
  • Whale watching. Akureyri is also a great place to do whale watching with the season spanning from June to October.

» Holuhraun . This is a large lava field created by fissure eruptions so there are always ongoing volcanic eruptions all over. If you’re up for it, it’s possible to go on a sightseeing flight over this eruption area. » Laugar . If you’re up for a leisurely soak during your Iceland itinerary, check out the swimming pool in this town.

TIPS FOR THE DAY: – Spend the night today in Akureyri. You can check Agoda or Booking.com for the best accommodations or places to stay in. Otherwise, look into AirBnB for cheaper options (based on my vlog, I stayed in this AirBnB house) – Like I’ve said multiple times already, given that Iceland is an expensive country, it’s a wise choice to buy and cook your own food; so go and make sure that you still have enough groceries. – It’s also best to buy an emergency lunch pack in case you can’t find a restaurant during tomorrow’s Iceland itinerary road trip. – Check your gas. If you’re not up for refilling your tank, make sure to take note of tomorrow’s route to see if there are gas stations on the way.

A scenic drive to Arnarstapi

Eiriksstadir

The drive from Akureyri to Arnarstapi will take more or less 6 hours but there will be some great stops along the way that will make your Iceland itinerary even more memorable! (The road that leads to Arnarstapi will mostly be a gravel road with sections that are dotted with potholes so please drive with care.)

  • Siglufjörður . This is a bit out of the way, so I only suggest stopping at this picturesque fishing town if you have more days or time in Iceland. In early July, it holds its annual Folk Music Festival which makes for a great place to be in if you want to experience a bit more of the culture and celebrations in the country. .
  • Vatnsdalshólar . These are basically a cluster of hills of different sizes that are believed to have been formed after a catastrophic landslide. .
  • NOTE : Saga Age is a period in Icelandic history in which the majority of the sagas are set — or narratives about ancient Nordic history and early Viking voyages. .
  • NOTE : Nearby is Stykkishólmur, a scenic harbor town.

OTHER STOPOVER OPTIONS: » Dynjandi . An awe-inspiring series of waterfalls that have a height of 100 meters. Unfortunately, it’s far up to the north so I only recommend doing this stopover if you have more days to fill.

TIPS FOR THE DAY: – Spend tonight and tomorrow in Arnarstapi (so 2 nights in total). You can check Ag o da or Booking.com for the best accommodations or places to stay in. Otherwise, look into AirBnB for cheaper options (based on my vlog above, I stayed in Hellissandur and then at Stori-Kambur ). – Like I’ve said multiple times already, given that Iceland is an expensive country, it’s a wise choice to buy and cook your own food; so always make sure that you still have enough groceries. – It’s also best to buy an emergency lunch pack in case you can’t find a restaurant during tomorrow’s Iceland itinerary road trip. – Check your gas. If you’re not up for refilling your tank, make sure to take note of tomorrow’s route to see if there are gas stations on the way.

Explore the Snæfellsnes peninsula

Arnarstapi

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a region in western Iceland known for its dramatic landscapes; so while you’re in Arnarstapi, this is the perfect opportunity to see its sights.

TIP : If you don’t have a rental car, you can join this Snæfellsnes One Day Tour !
  • Bárður Snæfellsás. This is a huge stone structure made by an Icelandic sculptor that’s said to depict Bárður Snæfellsás, a half-troll, half-man character of local legends.
  • TIP: There is also a stone arch nearby which you can walk on top of it. To reach it, you just need to find the white Arnarstapaviti lighthouse.
  • Hellnar . This is NOT in Arnarstapi but I mentioned it here because if you follow the coastline paths, it’s possible to do a small hike that will lead to the village of Hellnar which is 2 kilometers away. The walk is great and well-marked with several beautiful basalt formations and ocean views.
  • Mt. Stapafell . A beautiful volcanic mountain near Arnarstapi. .
  • Londrangar . These are a pair of magnificent rock pinnacles that have been formed through erosion and they protrude from the coast like castles in the sea. .
  • Dritvík & Djúpalónssandur . These are beautiful pebble beaches with some parts of a shipwreck still lying on its sand. TRIVIA: In Djúpalónssandur, there are 4 lifting stones there that were traditionally used by fishermen to test their strength. .
  • Snæfellsjökull National Park . An area that’s home to the sub-glacial volcano of Snæfellsjökull. Other things that you can find in the park are Buðahraun lava fields and waterfalls. NOTE: Places like Londrangar and Djupalonssandur are part of the park. .
  • ★ Mt. Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss . Rising at 463 meters, Mt. Kirkjufell is a prominent mountain in Snaefellsnes peninsula that perfectly backdrops Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. You should never miss out on this stop while in the area because it’s truly an incredible place. .
  • Grundarfjörður . If you have time to spare after visiting Kirkjufellsfoss on this Iceland itinerary, you can stop by this charming fishing town.
TIPS FOR THE DAY: – Like I’ve said for multiple times already, given that Iceland is an expensive country, it’s a wise choice to buy and cook your own food; so always make sure that you still have enough groceries. – It’s also best to buy an emergency lunch pack in case you can’t find a restaurant during tomorrow’s Iceland itinerary road trip. – Check your gas. If you’re not up for refilling your tank, make sure to take note of tomorrow’s route to see if there are gas stations on the way.

Drive back to Reykjavik

Gerduberg

  • NOTE : Barnafoss or Bjarnafoss is also found near Hraunfossar and it is also different given that it’s somewhat a rapid waterfall. .
  • Glymur . With a cascade of 198 meters, this is the 2nd highest waterfall in the whole of Iceland (with the first being Morsarfoss). Getting here is a bit of a hike since it can take you about 4 hours (roundtrip). .
  • Akranes Ship Ruin . If you’re someone who wants some more interesting photo subjects, this oldest steel ship in Iceland that has been beached for years in Akranes can be worth a stopover on your Iceland itinerary. .
  • ★ Gerðuberg . This is a bit similar to the basalt rock columns in Reynisfjara beach but bigger; after all, this cliff has some amazing geometric patterns on it!

OTHER OPTIONS: » If you end up arriving early in Reykjavik during your Iceland itinerary and are in need of some activities to fill up the time, you can do activities that you haven’t been able to do on Day #1 and #2.

TIPS FOR THE DAY: – Spend the next nights in Reykjavik (so 2 nights in total, in which I will regard Day #10 as the departure date). You can see this list of the best accommodations or places to stay in the city. Otherwise, look into AirBnB for other options (based on my vlog above, I stayed in this cozy house ) . – Like I’ve said multiple times already, given that Iceland is an expensive country, it’s a wise choice to buy and cook your own food; so always make sure that you still have enough groceries. Otherwise, you can enjoy the top Reykjavik restaurants such as Grillmarkadurinn, Fiskfelagid, Kopar or Dill. – Check your gas. If you’re not up for refilling your tank, make sure to take note of tomorrow’s Iceland itinerary route to see if there are gas stations on the way.

Explore the Golden Circle

Golden Circle

It’s finally the time for you to visit the Golden Circle which, as I’ve mentioned previously, is a popular tourist route that spans 300 kilometers as it loops from Reykjavik into the southern area and back.

TIP : If you’re tired of driving at this point of the Iceland itinerary, it’s totally possible to take on a guided tour for it! You can choose from these list of Golden Circle tours .

Below are the key spots on this route:

  • NOTE : This is also a rift valley where the North American & Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly separating from each other. Because of this, there are deep fissures in the ground, one of which is called Silfra where a lot of visitors go snorkeling or scuba diving. If you want to do this, book online here: snorkeling tour / diving tour . .
  • Laugarvatn Fontana . If you happen to have lost the chance to book a spot at the Blue Lagoon or if you simply want a place that has less of a crowd, this spa center with natural hot springs can be a good alternative. Here, you can enjoy their steam baths, geothermal pools, and more. .
  • ★ Haukadalur . This is a valley in Iceland that is home to hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, and geysers — including the famous geysers called Geysir and Strokkur. In fact, did you know that the term “geyser” was derived from ‘Geysir’? Nowadays, unfortunately, Geysir no longer erupts but Strokkur is still constantly exploding hot water at 100 feet into the air every 10 minutes or so. .
  • NOTE : Langjökull is the 2nd largest ice cap glacier in Iceland and it is possible to explore it by foot, jeep or snowmobile. For such, I highly recommend doing a snowmobile tour ! Not too far from this is Viðgelmir which is the largest lava tube in Iceland at 5,200 feet and it’s extremely popular for caving tours. .
  • Skálholt Cathedral . Skalholt was the center of Christianity in Iceland and its very first bishop settled in this town. Today, apart from the beautiful church, you will also find a museum and a sarcophagus in the area. .
  • NOTE : There is an ISK 400 entrance fee and this is to help preserve the crater which is on privately owned land. .
  • The Geothermal Energy Exhibition . If you’re interested, this is an interactive museum that aims to show how geothermal energy is harnessed on the island.

Like what I have already stated before, I’m suggesting that you do the visit to the Blue Lagoon today in the early morning because aside from the fact that it’s nearer to the airport, I think you will love how relaxed you would feel when you end this whole Ring Road trip by soaking in its healing waters to wash away all your fatigue.

I just really think that it’s fitting, and when I personally did this, I was so ready to hop on my flight and sleep soundly!

  • TIP : Try to secure a spot in the early morning in order to avoid the crowd, as well as to get the best lighting. Otherwise, visiting late at night is great too in order to enjoy the midnight sun in the summer or the Northern Lights in its season. For more tips about the Blue Lagoon, you can read this article [ coming soon ]. .
  • Garður . If you still have some time before your flight, this town that’s on the very tip of the peninsula provides magnificent sea views and two picturesque lighthouses.
TIPS FOR THE DAY: – Don’t forget to fill up your gas tank when returning your rental car today at the airport. – If you only have 10 days on your Iceland itinerary, I recommend getting a late flight out for this departure date so that you can have enough time to enjoy the Blue Lagoon.

Hi Aileen, Thanks for the info about your iceland trip itineraries. Im planning to visit on April. Would you give us all the airbnb’s that you booked. Its really a nice place. Thank you.

I’ve updated the blog post now with the Airbnb links! Hope it helps :D

Marco

Thanks so much for such a detailed post. Iceland has been on my bucket list for some time and I really think I need to start planning. I like your itinerary for 10 days, think that’s a great amount of time to really get to grips with the country. Thanks again!

Carla

Hi Ms Aileen, I saw your 3 videos and this post just today and found it sooo inviting lol Thus can I ask if you booked your Airbnb’s in advance before or after having your Visa approved? Since I heard you need to provide that in the embassy upon applying for it.

I didn’t book my Airbnbs before the application, I used booking.com to book “dummy” hotels that I can cancel anytime to provide as proof to the embassy. Hope that helps!

Gc

What about clothing? How did you prepare for these? What are the best winter clothing and shoes and how did you get them?

Hey GC! I’m actually gonna post that soon, please stay tuned :D

7 Days in Iceland: Itinerary, Tips & Budget

Contributed by The Forever Honeymooners

Words can’t capture the magnificence of the Land of Fire and Ice. Iceland is a country forged by contradictions. Land mass created from smoldering lava spewed by the many active volcanoes in the land meeting the freezing atmosphere. This is a country of extremes, not only in terms of weather but also of beauty. Our base for the week that we spent was Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. Unlike other European cities, massive monuments and structures are few and far between. Reykjavík is a small, charming city. Most buildings don’t go higher than three floors. While the city is interesting, Iceland is best experienced when immersed in nature. This means spending most of our time in the great outdoors hours away from the city. Echoing what others have said, this city ain’t cheap. Budget versus actual expenses may vary greatly so I suggest to leave an ample wiggle room, more than you normally would.

We arrived in Keflavik Airport from Amsterdam around noon. The airport is around 45 minutes away from the city centre of Reykjavík. This city isn’t as well connected as other Europeans cities. There is no tram or train available for going around. People go around by bus, cab, or if near enough, walking. We booked our bus ride to the city online. This allowed us to save time as we avoided the queue at the ticket counter. Halfway through the trip, we overheard bad news from other travellers. Severe weather was forecasted the next day. As we already made tour bookings for our stay, including our Airbnb arrangements, we were quite worried that our tour the next day will be cancelled.

For what remained of the day, we walked around the outskirts of Reykjavík and familiarized ourselves around the neighbourhood. We intended to catch as much of the Northern Lights as we can, so we booked a hunting trip that night given the moderate forecast.

  • Book the airport bus ahead.
  • Be prepared to change your schedule on short notice.
  • Practice camera settings for low light shooting. Bring a tripod! 🙂
  • Cabs cost a fortune. Walk when you can. You also have to call ( as in yes ring them) the cab company to get a ride. You can’t just get one off the street. Hreyfill Taxi – +354 588 5522

Stuck. The forecast turned into reality. A strong storm took over the city causing tour providers to cancel the day’s trips. This storm is one of the strongest in recent years. Strong enough to blow a busload of tourists off the road. So we had to scramble to re-arrange our arranged tours. Fortunately for us, we booked most of our tours with the same company making it easier to juggle the available schedule. We took this “free” day as an opportunity to explore the city. One thing to note in Iceland, despite severe weather, most shops and sites in the city remained open. The storm passed quite quickly that by the end of the day, winds died down and the heavy rain abated. Amidst the storm, we walked around the city centre. The centre is quite compact that one site can’t be more than 30 minutes worth of walking. Our gracious host allowed us to extend one night in her place. Thank goodness!! She had other guests coming in that night, so she let us sleep on mattresses in her spare room/office. I love Airbnb.

We spent the day walking around the city. We walked to the Hallgrímskirkja at the height of the storm and we were nearly blown off the path. Jaysen and I had to duck and take cover behind the statue of Leif Erikson then scamper into the church. The church tower is the highest structure in the city offering a sweeping, colourful view of the city from the top. It was a challenge to get around as the winds were still so strong and it was really cold, that we jumped into the first available transportation we saw. We hopped in a Hop On Hop Off bus without thinking. It was the single worst decision we made during that trip. My only consolation is that it was between paying for the most expensive bus ride in my life or freezing/being blown away. The short bus ride took us to Harpa. The building’s architecture is spectacular, the impressive facade, grand staircase, and intricate ceiling. It is a work of art on its own. From Harpa, we walked to the City Hall and the around the Old Town. Then we walked back to Hallgrímskirkja to have a proper traditional Icelandic dinner at Loki’s Café.

  • Weatherproof your gadgets (especially your camera).
  • Pack light.
  • Baggage lockers are available but limited (BSI station and city car park) and expensive.
  • Do not get on a Hop On Hop Off bus. You don’t need it and it’s a total waste of money.

Early day to tour the Snæfellsness Peninsula in the west part of Iceland. This part of Iceland is less popular but is well worth the trip. Our tour was a day trip booked with Nice Travel which I highly recommend. They have the most amazing and entertaining tour guides. We have a small group and it was a comfortable ride. For this trip, we had Thor (not THAT Thor!) with us. Having a guide named Thor made me feel a little bit more comfortable, he might just get out us out of any situation. 🙂 The day started with a visit

For this trip, we had Thor (not THAT Thor!) with us. Having a guide named Thor made me feel a little bit more comfortable, he might just get us out of any situation. The day started with a visit Ytri-Tunga to look for some seals. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any but it was all good, the landscape was beautiful nonetheless. Next stop was Arnarstapi, which is an old fishing village named after a mythical creature, half human,

Next stop was Arnarstapi, which is an old fishing village named after a mythical creature, half human, half ogre. There are natural ports here and cliffs that drop to the raging ocean. Platforms are well situated to allow visitors to birdwatch or just marvel at the huge lava formations. The winds are very strong near the cliffs and it was misty when we went so it was a challenge to get decent photos. Thor shared a mesmerizing tale as we were en route to Djúpalónssandur. According to him, this beach was once believed to be the edge of the world. Some four hundred years ago, when people still believed that the world is flat, Columbus declared it to be the “end of the world” as you can see no other landmass from the beach and waves are crashing murderously. Some four hundred years ago, when people still believed that the world is flat, Columbus declared it to be the “end of the world” as you can see no other landmass from the beach and waves are crashing murderously. In reality, thousands of miles away, the next large landmass from this beach is Brazil. So he said. To get to the beach, one will have to navigate through a rocky descent with only feeble ropes to hold on to. It was extra hard for us as we went during winter, thus we have to walk on an icy trail. One mistake and we will fall off the cliff. I think. The waves that day were crazy huge and angry, the wind blowing strongly. It takes more and more effort to walk nearer to the beach. The wind was so strong that even if I let myself fall backwards, I can’t. The wind propped me up. Behind the beach is a contradiction. There lies a quiet, calm, and beautiful lagoon. Behind the beach is a contradiction. There lies a quiet, calm, and beautiful lagoon. Next stop is the majestic Kirkjufell. This mountain is one of the most photographed mountains in the world. And no wonder. It has a beautiful symmetry covered in snow. In front of the mountain is a short trail with a few charming waterfalls. Drones are not allowed here. Believe me. The day ended around 9pm. Snow was falling.

  • Check first if drones are allowed in the areas. Even if they are, sometimes it’s best to just leave it in the van as the trails may be difficult.
  • Warm your gadget. Our DJI Osmo froze on us on several occasions.
  • Please follow the signs. If it says stay far from the shore, please do. Many a tourist have met their deaths through sneaker waves.

We woke up to a blanket of snow. A lot of snow. Apparently, while we were knocked out, Iceland just had a record amount of snowfall over the last several hours. Many roads are blocked, clearing operations are still ongoing. While we were goofing around the snow, the people who lived in the apartment complex were miserably shovelling snow off their driveway. For a moment I thought our tour will be cancelled but the provider messaged and said our ride is on its way. Today is Golden Circle day, located in South Iceland. This is the most popular route in Iceland as it is the closest to Reykjavík. On this route, you will visit Thingviller National Park where two tectonic plates meet, well, they are actually moving apart. Ah-mazing. We also got to visit the mighty

Today is Golden Circle day, located in South Iceland. This is the most popular route in Iceland as it is the closest to Reykjavík. On this route, you will visit Thingviller National Park where two tectonic plates meet, well, they are actually moving apart. Ah-mazing. We also got to visit the mighty Gulfoss waterfalls and the geothermal area in Haukadalur wherein the Stokkur geysir erupts every five minutes or so. We had a fancy dinner and we ended the day with a dip in the secret lagoon. We then proceeded to the most unique “hotel” in Iceland. I will write a separate post about this tour so I can include more photos to do it justice.

  • Bring a towel, if you can (try the aquazorb ones for space saving). Or you can just rent.
  • Pack that conditioner. You will need a lot of it after the lagoon dip.
  • Try the lamb soup in the cafeteria near the geyser. So yummy and filling for around 1,400 ISK.

Remember that big storm in day one that threw our plans out the window? Well, this day is the what I call the collateral damage. This was supposed to be the “free” day we planned at the tail end of our trip to allow us to wind down in the city, join a walking city tour, just wander around, and have enough time for the last bus trip to our accommodation near Keflavik. Well, not anymore. Now, it became an awkward in-betweener as we have a full two days ahead. But for the moment, we have half-day left as we were dropped off from the Golden Circle tour. My hope of joining the walking tour went down the drain as we were dropped past noon. There’s one more scheduled in the afternoon, but the big upside to a wrecked plan is new opportunities to try something new. What’s a visit to Iceland without having an encounter with the famed Icelandic horse? That afternoon, we not only got to pet Icelandic horses, we rode them too!! This was not part of our itinerary but I am very glad we did

This was not part of our itinerary but I am very glad we did a last-minute booking. We went with Íslenski Hesturinn which included pick-up and drop-off. They are, for me, the best horse riding service provider. It was my first time to ride a horse without a lead holding him for me. I was able to do it! With careful and very detailed instructions from Begga, I was able to manage my

It was my first time to ride a horse without a lead holding him for me. I was able to do it! With careful and very detailed instructions from Begga, I was able to manage my horse Athena quite well. We were all taught how to tölt. What an exhilarating experience, we passed by different landscapes and lava formations along our way. Begga is the instructor and owner of the company and she gives heart to every experience. You can really feel how much she loves these gentle creatures. Aurora forecast for that day is at a five. This is a rare occurrence, but for that entire week, we were having fantastic daily forecasts. Aurora forecast for that day is at a five. This is a rare occurrence, but for that entire week, we were having fantastic daily forecasts. Again, at the last minute, after dinner at Icelandic Fish and Chips, we booked an Aurora watching cruise. The price is much steeper than the bus tours, but hey. While waiting, we already saw the northern lights dancing in the harbour. Pretty strong show tonight. Then our boat left to go farther into the sea where there are less city lights, but again, something unexpected happened. One of the engines started to malfunction and the crew couldn’t fix it. So, back to the harbour we go. We were told we can join the later cruise leaving at 11pm or refund our payment. We opted to refund as we have an early day the next day. All is well that ends well. Our consolation prize was that we stumbled upon the most famous hotdog stand in Iceland, Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, and ate our disappointment out. Those are seriously delicious hotdogs.

  • Never let the hotdog pass. Though this outlet near the harbour is popular because of Bill Clinton, you can get the same hotdog in stores around the city.
  • Book that horse riding session. You will not regret it.
  • Moving boat + low light camera settings = blurry photos. If you intend to have magnificent aurora shots, don’t do it from a boat.
  • Get dining recommendation from the cab driver. Never fails.

Day 6 and 7

The next two days were spent along the south coast of Iceland. We went with the same tour company as the Snæfellsness tour, Nice Travel, this time with Antonio as our guide. He was a superb guide: funny, knowledgeable, and a little bit of MacGyver. He made sure everyone is safe while having fun. Importantly, he ensured that our driver gets enough rest. He also brought us to some “secret” spots which I found enjoyable as there were no large crowds our tour buses around. Our group was quite small, so the ride was very comfortable. In this

Our group was quite small, so the ride was very comfortable. In this tour, we went to Skógafoss, Reynisfjara where we saw the basalt sea stacks along the shore, passed by the village of Vik and spent the night in a nice hostel middle of nowhere. This was the most ideal place to catch the northern lights as there is little to no other light source. We had an open field all to ourselves where we played and set-up our cameras. We were treated to a nightlong show of dancing lights. The next day was spent exploring Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, ice caving in Vatnajökull with

The next day was spent exploring Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, ice caving in Vatnajökull with super fun 4×4 ride on the glacier. We then proceeded to the Diamond Beach where glaciers are washed ashore or are floating nearby before heading. The drive back to Reyjavík took around five hours. We were supposed to stay near Keflavik for the night so that we can travel comfortably to the airport the next day. Unfortunately, we made it back to the city around 11pm, too late for the last bus trip during winter which is around 4pm. We had to spend the night in the bus station, fortunately, it wasn’t that long as the first trip to the airport was 3am. More on this tour in my following posts.

  • Check the BSI bus schedule.
  • Check the ticket if the ticket you bought is for return or one way.
  • Tour will stop by restaurants for meals. You can opt out and eat in the van if you
  • brought some food. That will be a little sad though.

Day 8 (not counted)

Early flight out to Amsterdam.

Budget per person

Airfare: ₱32,000 (via Emirates including WOWair for AMS-Iceland)

Visa + VFS processing fee: + ₱1,420.00

We have a valid Schengen visa BUT, I had to get a new one as I changed surname. We got contradicting advice, so we opted to play it safe and just get a new one. It was quite a squeeze, since this trip was a surprise present from Jaysen. I had less than a month to secure a new visa. Processing takes 14 days. I lodged my visa application at the Norwegian processing centre which also processes visa for Iceland. I got my visa in two days!

Accommodation for 5 nights: ₱15,ooo (Airbnb)

Tours: Optional (most of the sights are for free)

Food (variable): ₱15,000

Airport bus: ₱1,250 (RT)

Locker fee: ₱5,000

Miscellaneous: ₱5,000

The budget for tours and food are variable. You can scrimp or splurge here. For the tours, we admittedly opted to spend more here so both of us can enjoy rather than have one of us drive. We were just not confident driving in a strange land for long distances. We would rather not waste time being lost, figuring out maps, or worse be in an accident as tourists account for more than 80% of road mishaps in Iceland. Eating in Iceland is quite tricky. First, it is expensive. There is no McDonalds around for a quick bite. There is one KFC in the suburb. The cheapest meal/snack we had was the hotdogs at around ₱200 a pop. Simple sandwiches from convenience stores cost around ₱300. If you stop by Joe and the Juice (their local version of Starbucks), you shell out around ₱600 for a sandwich and a latte. If you want “real” food, fish and chips go for around ₱1,000. Traditional café where they serve lamb soup, shark, and other delicacies charge a bit more. Shop in a grocery like Bonus if you pass by one if your accommodation allows simple meal prep.

There you have it! Safe travels.
