Voyagers K9 Apparel Review for Dachshunds

We recently had the chance to try out a couple dog jackets from Voyagers K9 Apparel.

People started asking me for my reviews so here they are.

Disclaimer: I bought two of these jackets but they sent me the other two at no cost to review.

A Note on the Necessity of Dog Jackets

While a dog’s fur or hair does add a certain amount of insulation against the cold, it’s not always enough to keep them warm and safe,

Dogs of any size with short, click hair, small dogs, and senior dogs are particularly susceptible to cold weather.

Dog jackets are not just to look cute, they have a function.

A jacket can raise your dog’s cold tolerance by 10-20 degrees, depending on the style and material.

Putting a jacket on your dog can be the difference between going on adventures or hiding inside all winter.

They can also help prevent injury and illness like frostbite and hypothermia .

Voyagers K9 Apparel Tummy Warmer Review

Our dog jacket of choice for cool weather like in late spring, early fall, or a chilly summer night, is a light to moderately thick fleece.

The Voyagers K9 Apparel Tummy Warmer for Standard Dachshunds and Miniature Dachshunds is made of an anti-pill, stain resistant Polartec® fleece.

It slips over the head and wraps snugly around the chest with Velcro.

Miniature Dachshund in a Tummy Warmer dog jacket from Voyagers K9 Apparel

There are a lot of good things about this fleece jacket for Dachshunds.

I think it looks very stylish.

I like that Voyagers K9 hand makes their dog jackets in the USA (Washington State where we live to be exact) and they are high-quality.

I like that they make jackets specifically to fit each dog breed so their Dachshund and Miniature Dachshund jackets are long enough to cover a Dachshund’s back.

Having a panel that wraps tightly around the ribcage helps to keep debris off my Dachshund’s chest.

It’s nice to be able to remove half the mud and dirt just by taking the jacket off.

We’ve only used the Tummy warmer on a few hikes so far but one of them was 9 miles and a couple have been wet and muddy.

It’s been enough experience for me to feel confident they are comfortable walking and hiking in it and it won’t chafe their armpits or legs .

I like that the Tummy Warmer is intended to be layered under the winter coat (see below) or rain coat (we haven’t tried it yet but hope to) to add additional warmth.

We haven’t tried layering with these jackets yet though.

The Warmer is machine washable and can go in the dryer on a low setting.

The not so good:

While I didn’t find anything “wrong” with the Tummy Warmer from Voyagers K9 Apparel, there are a few things that are not ideal for me.

First, the name implies that the jacket keeps a Dachshund’s tummy warm. However, the panel only covers the chest.

Semantics I know but Dachshunds are low to the ground so their belly is likely to get wet, or drag in the snow, and get cold.

I receive questions and comments all the time from Dachshund owners looking for a dog jacket that will fully cover their dog’s abdomen to keep their belly warm so I wanted to make sure to point that out.

A lot of people say that their Dachshund hates jackets with Velcro because they’re scared of the sound. This jacket would not be a good fit for those dogs.

I prefer my Dachshunds to wear their harness underneath their jackets so I had to snip a hole in the back at the harness D-ring.

The Tummy Warmer doesn’t come with a harness hole and the company told me they don’t like to sew them in – they intend for the jacket to be worn underneath your dog’s harness.

It doesn’t look pretty but the fleece doesn’t fray so cutting a small hole in the back so I could hook the leash to the harness didn’t ruin the jacket.

The front panel on the Tummy Warmer is double thickness (folded over) but the jacket body is single layer.

I’m not sure why the difference but I would prefer the whole jacket either be single layer or double, not both.

The edge of the fleece cut for the body of the jacket is raw.

k9 voyager tummy warmer

While I don’t expect it to fray, and there is no indication of it doing so after being worn and washed several times, I was a but surprised that a jacket that costs this much doesn’t have a finished edge.

The final verdict

I really like the Voyagers K9 Tummy Warmer.

I’d definitely buy more and would recommend them to others.

Voyagers K9 Winter Coat Review

I am a fanatic about having the proper gear and clothing for the weather conditions and that goes for my Dachshund’s too.

It’s important to me that my small dogs have a jacket that will keep them warm enough without being overkill, causing them to overheat and be uncomfortable.

In the winter, when the air is cold but we aren’t walking in snow, this means we need a jacket that is significantly warmer than a fleece sweater but without the full-coverage of their serious snow jacket.

The Voyagers K9 Winter Jacket for Miniature Dachshunds and Standard Dachshunds fills this need perfectly.

k9 voyager tummy warmer

Again, the dog jacket is very stylish and I like that it’s made with great care in the USA.

The Winter Coat also has a panel that wraps around the chest, which helps keep it warm and keep water and debris off.

It’s windproof and waterproof.

I love the thick fleece snood that keeps their neck warm. I can also pull it up to cover their ears if they get too cold.

The jacket is literally made for a Dachshund’s body so it fits close and covers the entire back.

The fleece panel across the front is designed so it doesn’t restrict natural movement of your dog’s legs and shoulders when they walk.

The back waterproof panel has reflective piping around it for visibility in low light and after dark.

The jacket can go in the washer and dryer.

There isn’t much that isn’t good about the Voyagers K9 Winter Coat in my opinion.

However, someone did ask me, “[Is] there any issues with the lack of front chest covering?”

This is touted as a winter coat.

While the panel that covers the front of the chest is designed to not interfere with your dog’s natural gait, that also means it doesn’t extend down over the front of your dog’s legs.

For this reason, I’m unlikely to use the Voyagers winter coat in snow.

Since a Dachshund’s chest sometimes plows, or drags in, snow, I could foresee snow getting shoved up between the chest panel and a dog’s body.

Also, since the legs are exposed (both front and back) it won’t help keep those muscles and tendons warm.

There is no harness hole in this jacket and I personally would never put it underneath my Dachshund’s harness.

However, this jacket is so nice that I don’t want to cut my own harness hole in it like I did with the Warmer.

If you’re like me, you will have to pay an additional $20 to have a harness hole, or D-ring for the leash, added to it, which significantly increases the cost of the jacket.

As with so many dog jackets, this one has Velcro so is not a good fit if your Dachshund is scared of the sound it makes.

I really like the the Winter Coat from Voyagers K9 Apparel for my Dachshunds.

It’s our new go-go winter (sans snow) dog jacket.

Voyagers K9 Apparel Reviews From Other People

There are literally thousands of reviews of Voyagers K9 Apparel from other people on their Facebook page, website, and Etsy store (they sell their coats there too).

The reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

Of course, there are some poor reviews and complaints but they are few and far between.

Below are notes about the most common negative reviews that I read.

Overall, the average review rating for Voyagers K9 Apparel is 4.5/5 stars or greater.

As noted above, the body of the Tummy Warmer is single-layer fleece. A few reviewers said things like, “Not as good of fabric as expected”, “So flimsy”, and “Thin for the price.”

Also as noted above, the body of the Tummy Warmer is simply a cut-out piece of fabric. A few reviewers noticed this and lamented about the “unfinished hem” or the lack of stitching around the edges of the material.

I couldn’t find one negative thing mentioned about the Winter Coat.

A few people commented that their customer service was “sarcastic”, “short”, and they felt the staff needed customer service training.

Honestly, I came away from my first customer experience with them thinking something similar but I’ve had several other positive experiences after that.

And their jackets are good quality, and fit Dachshunds so well, I would definitely order again.

I will leave you with a review from a member of our Dachshund Club :

k9 voyager tummy warmer

“The Voyagers K9 winter coat is a dream because it fits my Dachshund’s body like a glove and is also easy to put on.

The Winter Coat keeps Kilo warm when he’s outdoors during cold winter months.

He also wears the Tummy Warmer under his winter coat when we head to extra cold places.

I love the functional aspect of this coat but it also doesn’t hurt that he looks extremely stylish in it (people stop me all the time to ask where his coat is from)!” – Stefania D

Choosing the Right Size

Please don’t try to guess the right size coat for your Dachshund by their weight. The weight is irrelevant compared to their dimensions.

Use a cloth measuring tape to take your dog’s specific measurements to compare to the size chart.

k9 voyager tummy warmer

In addition to selecting the appropriate size coat, I also had to enter the specific measurements so the folks at Voyagers K9 Apparel could double check that I made the right choice.

Summit and Gretel wear the size medium for Miniature Dachshunds in both of the jackets above.

For reference, Summit’s measurements are neck 10.5 inches, chest 15 1/2 inches, and back length 14 inches (from shoulder blades to base of tail).

Gretel has the same neck measurement but her chest is 16 1/4 inches and her back is 13 inches.

If your Dachshund won’t fit a standard size, not to worry because you can request a custom-made one be made to fit your dog perfectly for an additional $25.

If you have any questions I didn’t answer here, please leave them below or message me through Facebook or Instagram .

Review: Voyagers K9 Apparel Dog Coat

Dogs have a built-in fur coat to keep them warm in the winter months. Unfortunately, some breeds still need an extra layer when it's especially cold or rainy. Jackets aren't just made to make your pup look adorable. High quality coats, like the Voyagers K9 Apparel Dog Coat, will keep your pet warm when the temperatures take a drastic dip.

A dog's age, breed, size and coat type all play a role in their ability to keep themselves warm. Small breeds and dogs with short or no fur can get cold after spending just a few minutes in the outdoors when the temperature is cold. Senior pets and dogs with certain health conditions can also have trouble regulating their body temperature.

Knowing when it's too cold for your pet to be outside is important, but it's not the only thing to consider. Precipitation can cause your dog's fur to get wet, which will make him get cold even faster. Providing him with an insulted, weatherproof jacket is an easy way to keep him warm when needed.

The Voyagers K9 Apparel Dog Coat is uniquely designed. As you can see, it doesn't look like traditional pet coats. Does this unique design make it less comfortable for your dog? Is it more effective at keeping your pup warm outside? I'll give you all the details in this product review.

Voyagers K9 Apparel Dog Coat Review

Voyagers K9 Apparel Dog Coat Review

If your dog's breed isn't on the list, don't worry! The company will also use your dog's exact measurements to make a coat that will fit him perfectly. The coat featured in this review is the company's winter coat, but they also offer rain coats, tummy warmers, hoods and booties.

You can see that the unique design of this winter coat features an attached hood. The hood and the interior of the jacket are made of Polartec fleece that is stain resistant. The outer shell of the jacket is made of waterproof nylon.

I demonstrate how easy this dog jacket is to take on and off in my video review above. The hood slides easily over your pup's head and can be adjusted to fit around the neck or pull up over the ears and the top of your dog's head.

I like the adjustable straps that keep this jacket securely on your dog. Most dog jackets of this style have one strap that secures under the belly. The Voyagers K9 Apparel Dog Coat has 2 straps – each securing around opposite sides of the chest to ensure the jacket stays on your dog no matter how active he is.

ALSO: How To Keep Dogs Warm Outside

Dog jacket with hood down

I was pleased to learn that these canine winter coats are sewn by hand in the USA. You can only order these jackets through the company's website , because they'll need your dog's unique measurements. The winter coats start at $83.00, depending on the size and color that you choose.

Obviously, this price isn't affordable on every budget. These coats are much more expensive than the traditional doggy jackets you can pick up at your local pet store. However, they're also made with much higher quality materials and feature the attached hood to keep your pup as warm as possible.

The high quality materials seem to be especially durable, so I do believe that this jacket will last for many years. Given the quality and the longevity of the product, I would say that this jacket is a decent value for the money spent.

About Voyagers K9 Apparel

Voyagers K9 Apparel came to life when the owners of greyhounds realized that nothing seems to fit their dogs correctly. They started their breed-specific clothing line, and today they have designs for more than 20 breeds and make a custom coat for others as well. Their quality coats come in many colors, and they fit like a glove!

The details of the Winter Coat

The Voyagers winter coat is a very well-made and well-designed coat to keep your dog warm during your cold adventures. It provides excellent coverage on the chest, neck, and back, keeping the major muscle groups and joints warm.

The “hood” and the front of the coat is made of soft fleece material. The neck gator can be extended high up even to cover the ears of some dogs who are very sensitive to cold, or they can be folded down.

The coat is very easy to put on or remove, it’s only secured by two velcro straps. The first belly wrap is broad and fleece-lined. The velcro design gives you some room for adjustment depending on where you want to secure it exactly.

The second velcro strap is a narrower piece, providing more chance to create a better fit for your dog depending on their shape. This second strap probably also helps to keep the coat from rotating or flipping up in the wind.

The coat has a thick Polartec polar fleece lining. It is very warm but not fluffy, so it still looks new on our coat after months of extensive use.

The outer layer is made of Taslan nylon with DWR finish making it windproof and waterproof. You can swipe most of the dirt off from it. If it needs a more serious cleanup, the coat is machine washable, and you can even put it in the dryer, although this might have a toll on the DWR layer after a few cycles.

The coat also has reflective lining around the edges that provides fair visibility even on a dark-colored jacket.

Voyagers K9 Apparel Winter Coat Review

We enjoyed testing this coat and got a lot of compliments from others while out on walks. In this season, we were lucky to receive many different coats for testing, which made us realize that they are the best for different use cases. The Voyagers K9 coat was the one that we grabbed almost every time for our daily walks. It is super easy to put on, it’s not bulky at all, and the back is not flipping up in the wind.

We also used it for a few hikes, and it worked very well on dry cold days or in snow. When used in wet, melting snow, it can start sticking to the chest part and melting on it after a while. The fleece dries fast, and it isn’t a big problem, but I prefer something that’s completely waterproof and doesn’t soak in the mud for wet trails. Another thing to consider is that thistle or sticky plants can easily get attached to the chest part, and they can be a pain to remove after a full day of running around in the woods, so it might not be ideal for chilly fall hikes.

When looking at the photos, you might get the feeling that the front design of the coat is restrictive, but in real life, it isn’t. The material is soft and flexible enough that Mia had no issues with running around in it. For Mia, I would say the belly band’s velcro could have been a little farther back to leave just a tad more room for the front legs to move back. I would prefer if the wide belly band would cover more of her middle section instead of being right behind the front legs, but this might be handy if you have a male dog.

If you like this coat, but it doesn’t seem warm enough for your dog, Voyagers K9 also sells a fleece Tummy Warmer that can be worn under this coat as a base layer. We also tested the Tummy Warmer this winter and will write the review on it soon! ;)

Checking Dog Coats with a Thermal Camera

We wrote an article checking 12 coats (including this one) with a thermal camera to see the insulation capabilities of different materials and coat designs.

If you want to learn more about our findings, click here to read the article !

Review Summary

We put this coat through a fair amount of use this season and are still impressed with it. Most warm coats are bulky or slide around somewhat, but this coat stays in place and fits Mia like a glove.

Another cool think about Voyagers K9 Apparel is that they make custom coats as well, so if you have a dog with unique proportions, just reach out to them to get a jacket that will perfectly fit your pup!;)

Where to buy

You can find the winter coat and their other coats on their website . All of their products are stitched in the USA!

Mia’s measurements

Many of you asked Mia’s measurements to understand the different products’ fit better. Your best chance of finding an excellent fitting gear is always to measure (and remeasure) your dog. Even we grab the measuring tape before getting a new product - even though we tested a lot of them and have a good feeling of her size by now.

I share her measurements below, but don’t go ahead and order the same size just because your dog is similar to Mia ;)

Shoulder height: 19.5 inches (50 cm)

Weight: 37-44 pounds (17-20 kg)

Widest chest circumference (where the most harness would have the chest strap): 25-26 inches (63-65 cm)

Neck circumference for collars: 15-16 inches (38-40 cm)

Back lengths: 22 inches (56 cm)

ReCoat ♻️ Boxer Tummy Warmer

The best coat for a Boxer begins with the tape measure.

After 30 years of making breed-specific performance dog apparel, we have discovered the most important measurement characteristics for making dog garments that fit, perform, and last. Voyagers K9 Apparel B oxer coats are designed for the unique characteristics of the breed, including the type of tail, chest-to-waist ratio, and natural shape of the spine.

For the best fit, the neck and chest should sit comfortably on your dog's shoulders. The following measurements will help you find the correct size, and our Risk Free Exchange Guarantee ensures your pup's comfort.

*For all measurements the tape should be snug but not tight. For dogs with fluffy coats, the fur can be gently compressed similar to how your dog wears a collar.

Neck circumference: measure around your dog’s neck where their collar sits.

Chest circumference: measure around the widest part of the chest, typically a few inches behind the front legs. Your dog should be standing for this measurement.

Best Dog Coats and Sweaters For Active Pups

These days, a warm winter coat is just part of several items I include for my dog when we head outdoors for a winter adventure . I used to think dog coats and sweaters were only for small dogs, purse puppies, or meant to act as a fashion statement.

Since becoming more active during the winter months, however, I’ve come to appreciate the functional use of a jacket for my dog.

Aside from keeping him warm, a dog coat also can also keep your dog dry, which means a cleaner car and less mess when you get back home.

The list below includes my top dog coat and sweater recommendations for active dogs. This means that they are all made from high quality materials, designed for maximum range of motion, and perform well in the elements.

Do Large Dogs Need Coats?

A common misconception is that large dogs don’t require jackets. For whatever reason, they seemed to be marketed only to small dogs in the past, though it’s become more common to see coats and sweaters on all sizes and breeds of dogs today.

Northern breeds with thicker coats, like Huskies, Malamutes, and Samoyeds typically stay plenty warm thanks to their thicker fur. Larger breeds with short fur, like Dobermans, German Short-Haired Pointers, and Greyhounds will likely require a coat if you’re planning to spend time outdoors on a cold day.

Even Sitka, who has both thicker and longer fur gets cold more frequently than I would expect. I’ve learned to always bring him a jacket on car camping trips , when we go backpacking, and always during winter activities.

There is no hard rule for which breeds require coats. If your dog gets cold or you’re going to be spending time outdoors, it makes sense to invest in a quality winter jacket for your dog.

At What Temperature Do Dogs Need Coats?

There is no magic number, but a general rule of thumb is to consider a coat or sweater for your dog when the temperature falls below 45℉.

Dogs also acclimate to different climates. For example, there are Huskies who do just fine in hot climates, like Arizona, and short-haired dogs who get used to the cold. It depends on the exposure and their individual body performance in weather.

Rather than use the temperature to determine whether your dog needs a coat, learn how to tell if your dog is cold and base the need for a jacket off those signs. These include:

  • Ears and paws are cold to the touch
  • Slow heart rate

Since smaller dogs are closer to the ground, they may require jackets at warmer temperatures, since they will be practically rubbing their belly along the chilly surface.

Lastly, seniors and sick dogs tend to become cold more easily, so even if your dog has longer fur, keep an eye on them as they age to determine if they might start to require a winter jacket.

Fitting and Selecting Dog Coats and Sweaters

There are a ton of dog coats and sweaters available on the market and not all are designed for performance. Some are purely made for looks, while others provide protection from the elements.

Specifications

When choosing a winter coat for your dog, think about the kind of activities you do, and what your dogs needs are. If you hike, cross country ski, backcountry ski, snowshoe, or do another winter sport, look for coats and sweaters with the following functions:

  • Waterproof or water resistant
  • Windproof or wind resistant
  • Made with Ripstop Nylon
  • Snug, but not tight, fit
  • Reflective piping or design
  • Spot for harness or collar, depending on what your dog wear

Many coats are designed to fit dogs based on their weight. However, this sizing does not take into account their body measurements, breed, or body shape.

Look for dog coats and sweaters that are custom fit or have multiple adjustments that allow you to alter the coat to fit your dog’s unique shape.

Make sure to take a look at the sizing chart and measure your dog (twice!) before ordering the jacket. You want the coat to fit snugly, but not too tight.

Too tight will restrict their movement and cause chafing, too loose will not keep them warm.

Favorite Dog Coats and Sweaters for Active Pups

I have tried most of the coast mentioned in this article and have two clear favorites: Voyagers K9 Apparel jackets and Hurtta North America. Both brands make exceptional dog coats and sweaters that are worth every penny.

Voyagers K9 Apparel Tummy Warmer

Voyagers K9 Apparel Tummy Warmer

For chilly, but not frigid days, the Voyagers K9 Apparel Tummy Warmer is a great base layer. The thick fleece will keep your dog plenty warm, but not too hot. On very cold days, the Polartec© fleece fits beneath the company’s winter coat (see below) and rain coat.

Voyagers K9 Apparel dog coats are all made to fit specific breeds or use custom measurements for mixed breeds. I have three jackets from this brand and they all fit Sitka perfectly.

This sweater comes in a number of fun colors, including turquoise, which is what I picked for Sitka. I love that it slides on easily over my dog’s head and Velcros under the belly. I can put it on in seconds.

A bonus with the Tummy Warmer is that it doubles as a Thunder Jacket for nervous dogs.

  • Chilly hikes
  • Winter beach visits
  • Daily walks
  • Layering beneath a waterproof jacket
  • Summer and Fall camping trips

For more about the Tummy Warmer, see my product review here .

Voyagers K9 Apparel Winter Coat

Voyagers K9 Apparel Winter Coat

This is the first jacket I ever bought for Sitka. The steep price tag delayed my purchase for a couple months, but I am so glad I let go of the number and bought this winter coat.

Since Sitka is a mutt, the Voyager K9 Apparel Winter Coat is custom designed to his exact measurements. It fits like a glove and it’s so easy to put on. I love that I don’t have to deal with putting his feet into sleeves.

The neck can be scrunched down to keep the neck warm or be pulled up and over the dog’s ears for added warmth. It is designed to wear over the Tummy Warmer for an extra layer of warmth, which is nice for dogs more prone to the cold.

The Winter Coat is ideal for:

  • Snow outings
  • Temperatures below freezing
  • Outdoor activities in inclement weather
  • Cold, wet weather

Hurtta Extreme Warmer

Hurtta Extreme Warmer

This Finnish brand with a North American presence makes some of the best jackets for dogs out there. Since Finland is a cold place, they know all about staying warm.

The Extreme Warmer will keep your dog warm in rough winter conditions thanks to the foil liner on the inside that reflects heat back onto your dog. The fabric is made from a shell Polyester and covered with 3M reflectors.

The breathable material will prevent your dog from overheating, while keeping them dry and warm. The hood can be adjusted and pulled over your dog’s ears to provide additional protection from the elements.

With multiple adjustment points along the back, legs, and neck, Hurtta jackets will handily fit most dogs. Be sure to measure according to the chart for best fit.

This jacket includes both a harness and collar opening for easy leash attachment. What is great about Hurtta is that the jackets can fit a wide range of dogs, from dachshunds to great danes.

Hurtta Expedition Parka

Hurtta Expedition Parka

Specifically designed for dogs with short hair and without an undercoat, the Expedition Parka will keep any dog warm in cold weather. This jacket is made for the active dog, allowing for full range of motion for winter sports, agility, and playing.

For perfect fit, the back, collar, and neckline can all be adjusted easily with the pull of a drawstring. The waterproof fabric will keep your dog dry and warm even in wet conditions after a long day in the mountains.

  • Dogs with short hair or no undercoat

Stumptown Quilted Dog Jacket

Ruffwear Stumptown Quilted Dog Coat

This stylish winter dog coat from Ruffwear comes in three colors and is made from a durable water-resistant fabric. The recycled polyester insulation keeps your dog warm and dry after a romp in the snow.

A harness opening on the back allows for easy leash attachment and the reflective trim ensures that your dog can be spotted after dark.

The adjustable side clips help create a snug fit and sizes range from xxs to xl.

Ideal for:

  • Clear, cold days

Gold Paw Fleece

Gold Paw Stretch Fleece

This fleece is a great shoulder season sweater for your dog. The Gold Paw Stretch Fleece is made in the USA (as are all of their products) with recycled materials and biodegradable packaging.

Available in several different colors and patterns, this fleece has a harness opening, can be layered beneath other jackets, and is made with super soft recycle polyester. As an even bigger bonus, Gold Paw products are super affordable!

Fetching Finds: My New Voyager Jackets

Don’t worry, I’m not packing my bags and moving north to become an Eskimo.

ammo the dacshund k9 voyagers coat

Nope, I’m just modeling my new jackets that mom got me from Voyagers K9 . You might remember that I posted about them a few weeks ago (which you can read here ).

ammo the dacshund k9 voyagers coat

Well my mom thought I could use a little wardrobe update this winter so she contacted them and ordered me two custom made coats to fit me exactly.

Since I’m too big to fit into their mini dachshund coat I had to send in custom measurements. So after Voyagers K9 got all my measurements, mom ordered me a winter coat and tummy warmer in yellow and she even had them put in an opening for my harness on the winter coat.

ammo the dacshund k9 voyagers coat

Last night I got to put my coats to the test out on the farm and since I figured some of my canine friends might be in the need for a winter coat this year too I thought I’d share a little review for you!

ammo the dacshund k9 voyagers coat

  • Very warm, especially when you layer a tummy warmer & winter coat
  • Fits me like a glove and is exactly the perfect length
  • Love the hood on the winter coat because I can cover up my ears when it’s really cold
  • Seams & velcro seem strong
  • Not too bulky and it’s easy for me to move around in
  • I can still fit my glowdoggie collar over top of the hood so I’m safe in the dark
  • The coats make me look oh so stylish
  • I couldn’t order any of the coats with a d-ring sewn onto the outside
  • Optional harness opening in winter coat is too high near my neck, meaning I can’t wear my custom harness from my pal Baxter’s mom because the d-ring is too far down my back. But it was at a nearly perfect position to work with my Puppia harness that I have.
  • They couldn’t put a harness opening in the tummy warmer, but the neck opening sits a little farther back so I can still reach my d-ring if I wear a harness under the tummy warmer. (I could also probably fit a harness on top of the tummy warmer since it’s thin enough).
  • The coat doesn’t go in between my legs like some of the other coats I have, although I feel like I can move a little easier without any fabric there. Time will tell if it keeps me warm enough in the snow without something to protect my chest.

UPDATE – apparently there was a slight mix-up and my coat actually didn’t come with a harness hole, what I actually thought was a harness hole was a hole for a collar. So I think with a harness hole put in it will be at a better position to be used with my custom made harness. I’ll update everyone as soon as I get to test it out! Yipee!

P.S. Don’t forget Voyagers K9 can make custom coats to fit any size dog, even mixed breeds!

Disclosure – I was not paid or compensated to write this post for Voyagers K9, I simply thought their coats looked warm and snuggly!

Oh Ammo, mom has looked at that same jacket for me!! She has liked it ever since you posted the link a couple of weeks ago, but she is also concerned about my chest being protected. She wants to know if your coat from noodleandfriends.com is warm enough & protects your chest from the snow okay??

My noodle and friends coats do protect my chest from the snow and are fairly warm, however after receiving my Voyagers K9 coat I think their coats might actually be a little warmer. Especially since they are custom made and fit more snug to my body. My noodle and friends coats are nice, but they never seem to be quite long enough for me (I am sorta long for a doxie). I do like having the open chest in the voyagers k9 coat because I can move around easier, in my noodle coats I tend to waddle a little bit and have trouble running. But it’s hard to say if I’ll miss the chest protection come the snowy season. I’m thinking though a good compromise might be to wear the tummy warmer from voyagers k9 underneath a noodle coat for extra warmth. That way you get the snug warmth of the tummy warmer but the chest protection (and harness dring) from noodle’s coat. I used to layer a sweater under my noodle coats but that can get kinda bulky, the tummy warmer is much thinner and seemingly warmer since it’s made from polarfleece. Hope that helps!

Oh thank you Amoo, that defeinitely does help me & mom make our decisions. We don’t get alot of snow here, but as you know even a little bit of snow can be hard on a doxie’s chest & tummy. We will take all of your pros & cons & suggestions into consideration when making our coat purchases. 🙂

After seeing this i went and got a pink one for my little Laila. She will be nice and warm in Canada this winter. Thanks Ammo and his mom

Yay! pink, now that’s a fun color!

I am interested in your yellow coat with hood and tummy warmer. Can you give me some details and price. Also how long does it take to receive the coat after ordering?

Glad you like the coats, unfortunately this is not a product we sell. I simply did a review for the company. You would have to contact them with any questions you might have.

Hello Ammo, Please share where you got the nice turquoise harness you wear. My mom has been looking for a harness that will fit me, but as you know with our very big chest not all harnesses work. Many of them have rubbed and caused sores on my legs. 🙁 I am about 17″ long and 13 lbs. Thank you! Your doxie friend, Budman

Links to all my favorite gear can be found at http://www.ammothedachshund.com/gear

interested in the the yellow Friday’s Fetch, Voyager K-9 Apparel for a mini dachshund 11 neck 14 chest 15-16 length. Please send me an e-mail with price and how long i will take to get it.

We don’t actually sell any of these products on our website. You would need to follow the links in this post to contact the company that makes them.

I have a small (runt) 20lbs shorthair dachshund FEMALE and most dog winter jackets are abdomen fitted for males. Have you ever created a wonderful fleece wrap with an extended under-belly covering for a “girl” that wraps up to the back leg front edge?

where do I purchase these coats?

I want to purchase the coat with hood in yellow. can’t seem to see where I do this and I need the size chart.

Voyagers K9 Apparel Custom Dog Rain Coat

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Voyagers K9 Custom Dog Rain Coat has been a solid choice for our canine companions so far. It is rugged, holds tight as the dogs go off trail, and has been effective at shucking water and keeping Rocket, my Irish Setter mix, dry The rain coat is a good option to keep the elements at bay while hiking with your dog. Voyagers K9 also offers the Dog Rain Coat in 21 breed-specific options. This is an initial review and I'll continue testing this custom jacket on my dog in the coming months and will update its long-term use as we experience more rain and colder temperatures.

  • Doesn't slide from side to side
  • Does not impede the dog's movement
  • Hook and loop holds firm
  • Allows plenty of room for Rover to answer "nature's call"
  • Potential issue of the loose fabric catching on brush
  • Fabric wants to bunch on the shoulders under a pack.

Let's cut to the chase—we LOVE our fur babies. C'mon, you know we spoil them—and would move mountains to take care of our pets. They are an integral part of our lives, and as outdoorsy people, we have them tag along (and how many of our dogs argue at that?). Voyagers K9 offers products for those of us who want to take care of our pets.

Voyagers K9 Apparel is a cottage company which started in 1993 because its founders couldn't find garments for their greyhounds. It has since expanded beyond greyhounds into a unique business that strives to make high-end, hard-working garments for dogs in 21 breed-specific designs, from beagles to whippets.

Voyagers K9 offers both "off the rack" breed-specific garments as well as custom sizes. It is obvious they have gone through several permutations to refine and fine tune their dog apparel.

The company's wide variety of offerings includes booties, winter coats, tummy warmers, and raincoats, all in a variety of colors. I picked green for the Custom Dog Rain Coat because I like it against my boy's copper color.

IMG_8581.jpg

Voyagers K9's Dog Rain Coat is available in 21 breed-specific options (for example, German Shorthaired Pointer, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Great Dane, Jack Russell Terrier, Vizsla, etc...). Each of those breed-specific jackets come in their own four sizes (S-XL). If your dog isn't one of those purebreds, you can also order the Rain Coat (or Winter Coat or Tummy Warmer) as a custom option, which is what I did for my Irish Setter mix. Custom options start at $115, slightly higher than Voyagers K9's "off the rack" prices. This is a luxury item though, and if it’s effective and durable, people will pay for the quality.

Getting my dog fitted involved entering numerous measurements (neck, length, chest, chest width, waist, underbelly), weight, gender, and a side profile photo of him on the brand's website. The company also offers videos and tips for measuring your dog, and can be contacted if you have questions. As mentioned, I chose green out of the eight color options.

Voyagers K9's garments are then made by hand in Washington state by its own seamstress. According to the brand, for custom garments its seamstress creates a unique coat based on your dog's unique measurements. They request the side profile picture of each dog to help the seamstress understand the curvature of your dog's chest and create a custom fit. I received the Custom Dog Rain Coat two weeks later.

The Dog Rain Coat is very attractive and has a sleek design. It's a full coverage coat that extends from  head to tail and has an integrated, adjustable hood.  The skirted material shucks brush and water. The reflective piping around the edges is a nice safety feature and gives the hem an attractive finish.

Voyagers K9's Rain Coat is really well thought out and sits well on our dogs. I even had my daughter fit it on her more slightly built Irish Setter mix, and it fit him fairly well for a custom-made jacket.

Leash & Harness  Openings

The Rain Coat has an opening at the back of the neck for a leash to pass through. I pulled on the leash, had my dog walk around, and generally observed how the leash behaved. The opening is perfectly placed. I will update this post as I see long term if the lead wears on the fabric.

You can also order  the  Rain Coat with an optional customizable harness opening, if your dog wears a body harness. I did not.

IMG_8687.jpg

The Integrated hood is fully adjustable and extends up and over the dog's neck and ears for extra protection in the rain.

Wearability & Durability

Setting the coat up was pretty easy. The cape-like style sits very naturally and intuitively on my dog's back. The worst part was getting his curls out of the way of the hook-and-loop straps underneath.

I was able to get this on him quite snuggly. I was worried that he would roll and paw at the coat, but he seemed to not even notice it once it was on.

The coat did not slide around or shift to one side or the other. A very effective fitting system is the use of counterbalance straps. A hook-and-loop strap system wraps underneath the dog's belly from both sides— the front strap attaches left to right, and the back strap attaches right to left—to  prevent shifting.

The strap are also placed out of the way of my dog's legs, yet located at good spots on his body so the coat rides snuggly yet comfortably. The coat also has extra pleated fabric in front to accommodate his stride.

My dog didn't even mind having the hood up. I can see where in really wet and cold weather this is a nice feature that will keep rain or snow from seeping down his neck.

We have been at a big of a disadvantage for testing in the rain so far with it being the start of summer in the desert. However, I had a window of a cooler morning with showers and took my dog tromping out into the brush on my property.

I intentionally took him through high grass and sagebrush, because I wanted to see how the coat would do during bushwhacking. As my dog plowed through the brush the coat just slid through the branches of the sagebrush. I watched carefully, as I wanted to see if the straps or garment would get hung up, or if it would tear or abrade.

After we tromped around, I did not see any signs of wear. Granted, the coat was brand new, but the stiff sagebrush would certainly challenge weak material. I was pleased at the performance and will keep an eye on how the jacket holds up in the long-term.

Adding a Dog Pack

The raincoat is also designed to allow your dog to wear a pack on top of it. The website is clear that the pack will not fit correctly if it is worn beneath the coat.

My dog's pack generally did OK on top of the coat. I found that it bunched above his shoulders, and I was little concerned at how it may fit around his front shoulders. Later, I will put a full pack on him with the raincoat. I just wasn't going to ask him to do that yet since it's been 90 degrees out. I will update this review when I do so.

See the pictures below for the initial pack fitting:

IMG_8692.jpg

The Rain Coat is made from a waterproof  Taslan nylon with DWR finish and has a mesh lining.  Since we didn't get heavy rain during initial testing, I took my dog to the hose, which took a minute for him to let me "rain on him" since he loves the hose.

Here, I really wanted to challenge the water resistance of the coat.

I found that for the most part, the fabric shucked the water. I did see a couple of spots where it seemed wetted out on the outside, but it was not.

According to the manufacturer: " Water beads up and rolls off DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish before penetrating Taslan fabric. Even after repeated washing, this material retains its superiority as a waterproof fabric."

The coat can be machine washed and dried. The manufacturer  also recommends washing it with a DWR treatment, like Nikwax, when needed, perhaps once a year,  to keep the fabric's waterproofing effective.

IMG_8593.jpg

Since he is a thinner coated Irish Setter mix, I look forward to using this jacket on my dog during the cold months ahead. During a weekend last winter I ended up using his backpack as his jacket as he had gotten quite cool the day before. I can see how this jacket would be very effective for thin coated dogs since they wet out pretty quickly, and can get shivery at the end of a wet day.

(Voyager K9 also makes winter coats, plus tummy warmers that can be layered under a coat.)

Personal Reactions

This company loves dogs. Voyagers K9 originated in initially taking care of greyhounds, but expanded. With their breed-specific options they obviously understand dog anatomy, high quality care for dogs, and dog owners' needs and wants. While their products come at a higher price, I think it's appropriate for a hand-made, cottage company with great customer service.

I really like the Voyagers K9 Dog Rain Coat. The fit, design, layers, and features make this jacket a choice dog owners need to consider. As for Rocket, the classical conditioning happened—when he sees this jacket, he knows fun is coming!

I'll continue testing this custom jacket on my dog in the coming months and will update its long-term use as we experience more rain and colder temperatures here in Washington State.

IMG-9093.jpg

My dog is a thinner coated Irish Setter mix. I have used two kinds of dog packs, and my daughter, whom I hike with often, has used jackets for her thin-haired Irish Setter mix.

Retired Military police dog killed, mistaken for fox

The MIA is checking the messages about the murder of a K-9 dog in the Moscow region, Mediazona reports. A retired military prosecutor had shot a police dog named Lee in the Moscow region’s Chekhov, allegedly taking it for a fox that killed his hens. The dog was killed in front of a dog handler from the Dog Training Center of the Moscow Central Administrative District, who was walking it. After being wounded, the dog was still alive and even ran towards the woman, but died in her arms. The dog handler made a video in which she described in detail what had happened. In the end of the video, the woman broke down and cried. Lee the shepherd dog was a decorated dog; it participated in the investigation of particularly serious crimes. A few years ago, Lee took part in the search for a dangerous killer together with cynologist Svetlana. The shepherd dog followed the trail for 24 hours and helped to gather very important evidence, and after that, it participated in the detention of the criminal. Meanwhile, the VK.com group Ombudsmen Politsii, which had reported the murder of the dog, says that after the tragedy, the prosecutor “laughs and offers a puppy in return.” According to the group, there are attempts to hush up the case The prosecutor shot the dog twice — to the paw and the head. All this time, the shepherd’s master tried to give signs to the flayflint, but in vain.

7 Best Moscow Moose Recipes

Nov 30, 2019

In this post, we reveal the best recipes on the internet for the Moscow Moose, one of the most legendary variations of the classic Moscow Mule. This great variation packs a punch and will be sure to impress your friends. Let's get started!

Introduction

The Moscow Moose cocktail is one of the most notable spin-offs of the traditional Moscow Mule drink. It melds the fresh flavors of the warmer months with the dark flavors of the cold ones. If you're wondering, "what is a Moscow Moose?", the answer is that it's a simple cocktail with a classic mix of ginger beer, lime, vodka, and rye. Rye is a popular cocktail ingredient that brings a sharp spiciness to the mix. This cocktail is super easy to make at home and ridiculously refreshing.

selective focus close up of wheat field with slight vignette

The Moscow Moose itself has several varieties, all of which pack a punch. Some use rye as an addition to the original recipe, while others replace vodka with it. Whichever way you go, the cocktail gives you something new to try if you’re looking for a way to spice up your cocktail.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the following:

What’s in a Moscow Moose?

  • When is the best time for a Moscow Moose cocktail?
  • Moscow Moose cocktail recipes
  • The ginger beer in your Moscow Moose
  • Health benefits of ginger beer
  • Ginger beer recipe

This cocktail contains the basic ingredients of a Moscow Mule, which are ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice. What makes it a Moscow Moose is the addition of rye whiskey. The combination of ginger and rye makes a spicy and zesty drink. Rye has a peppery taste, one that’s a bit too strong and which is slightly balanced by the hint of sweetness found in ginger. Then there’s the bitterness in lime, which adds a citric twist to the cocktail.

When is the Best Time for a Moscow Moose Cocktail?

Because of its flavor, a rye cocktail is great for cold weather days. You can also drink it on a hot sunny day or anytime you want a distinct flavor in your drink. Rye is savory enough, and you’ll always be able to taste it through the lime and ginger.

Moscow Moose Cocktail Recipes

Here are some of the best Moose drink recipes which strike that elusive balance between strong, spicy, and sweet. Even better, they’re pretty easy to prepare and don’t require much in terms of ingredients. They are all utterly spectacular in their simplicity.

The Classic Moscow Moose

Prep Time: 5 minutes Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 4 oz. ginger beer
  • ½ tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp amaretto
  • Lemon twist

Instructions:

  • Place ice in a glass, then add whiskey, lemon juice, and amaretto.
  • Top with ginger beer and give a quick stir.
  • Garnish with the lemon twist and enjoy.

Canadian Moscow Moose Cocktail

Prep Time: 5 minutes Serves: 2

  • 3 oz. Canadian rye whiskey
  • 1 oz. haskap liqueur
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 0z. maple syrup
  • 1 tsp ginger beer
  • 4 dashes apple bitters
  • Put crushed ice in a mug, then add the rye whiskey, lime, haskap liqueur, and maple syrup. Top with ginger beer.
  • Add bitters.
  • Garnish with ginger and serve.

Apple bitters give this Canadian drink a flavor profile different from all the other varieties of Moscow Moose cocktail. They also enhance the aromas in the cocktail, exposing hints of lime, whiskey, liqueur, and ginger. Apple bitters balance out the sourness in the rye whiskey and lime, which is suitable for you if you would love a cocktail that’s a little bit lightly flavored. This effect is further improved upon by the maple syrup, which gives the cocktail a sugary twist.

The haskap liqueur is made from haskap berries and has a sweetness you would find in a mix of raspberries, blackcurrants, and blueberries. This combination of ingredients makes the cocktail an excellent choice for anyone with a sweet tooth who would like to blunt the bitter taste of the moose drink.

Whiskey Ginger Moscow Moose Cocktail

  • 6 oz. ginger ale
  • 0.5 oz. lime juice
  • Put ice in a copper mug, then pour in the whiskey.
  • Add the ginger ale and lime juice.
  • Garnish with lime wedge.

Ginger ale is not as strong as ginger beer, but it has a refreshing citrusy taste. When mixed with whiskey and lime juice, a spicy-sweet flavor is created.

Birch Beer Moscow Moose

  • A sprig of mint
  • 2 blueberries
  • 1 lime wedge
  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 2 tbsp. birch beer
  • Muddle the lime, mint, and blueberries together in a copper mug.
  • Pour in the vodka and birch beer, then mix.
  • Add ice and enjoy.

Birch beer is a type of carbonated soft drink that usually includes birch bark and herbal extracts. So, if you love adding a bit of herbal spice to your drink, this is the cocktail for you. In this recipe, the red birch beer adds taste as well as color, making the drink all the more irresistible. The blueberries bring a sweet tartness into the mix and, the fresher they are, the more juice they produce. This makes for an even richer cocktail.

Not only will you be making your Moscow Moose more flavorful with these berries, but you’ll also be reaping their health benefits. Blueberries are full of antioxidants that boost the body’s immunity by fighting free radicals, which cause cell damage. This mix is quite refreshing because of the mint. When mint is muddled, it releases an oil extract with a sweet, aromatic flavor. Freshness is vital when it comes to adding mint to your alcoholic drink, as it will release more of its juice and scent.

Moscow Moose Drink with Soda Water

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 1/8 oz. soda water
  • 1 oz. ginger beer
  • 1 lime wedge
  • 1 lemon wedge
  • Sprig of mint
  • Fill a mug with crushed ice.
  • Stir vodka, lemon, ginger beer, and soda water then pour into the mug.
  • Garnish with mint and lime wedge.

Soda water has a slightly sour taste, with a note of citrus. It’s suitable for bringing subtle flavor changes to this cocktail, and also adds fizziness.

Amaretto Moscow Moose Cocktail

hand holding copper cup filled with crushed ice and mint leaves

  • 1 tsp. amaretto
  • I tbsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 2 oz. ginger beer
  • Pour ice in a glass, then add rye.
  • Mix in lemon juice and amaretto.
  • Top with ginger beer and stir to combine.
  • Use lemon twist to garnish.

Amaretto is an Italian liqueur with a sweet taste. Traditionally, bitter almonds are used for flavoring, but there are varieties prepared using peach and apricot stones. Amaretto is used in mixed alcoholic drinks and adds an almond-like flavor. This liqueur blends exceptionally well with several flavorings, among them citrus. If you are interested in trying out Italian-based cocktails, this Amaretto Moscow Moose drink recipe is a good place to start.

Other than being a suitable pairing for the amaretto, lemon juice makes its mark in this mixed drink by adding some sourness. In addition, freshly squeezed lemon juice will do more for your Moose than store-bought varieties, which are less delicious. Also, keep in mind that the longer the citric juice remains in your cocktail, the better-tasting it gets. Its aroma also becomes stronger.

Peppermint Moscow Moose Cocktail

Prep Time: 2 minutes Serves: 1

  • 2 oz. peppermint schnapps
  • 1.25 oz. vodka
  • Pour the peppermint schnapps into a glass.
  • Add the vodka.
  • Serve and enjoy.

If you don’t mind strong cocktails, then this combination of schnapps and vodka has got you covered. With such simple preparation, it's ideal when you're in a hurry or preparing drinks for a large group. The type of schnapps used here has a minty flavor that will take away a bit of edge from the vodka. Note that its minty flavor is more on the intense side, and it also contains a high percentage of alcohol.

The Ginger Beer in Your Moscow Moose

Ginger beer remains an essential ingredient in any variation of the Moscow Mule , including the Moscow Moose drink. Since it’s a common ingredient in all of these recipes, let’s have a look at its benefits and how you can make your own at home.

Health Benefits of Ginger Beer

These are some of the health benefits of ginger beer :

  • Relieves Nausea and Helps in Digestion – Ginger beer aids in the movement of food through the stomach, promoting smooth digestion. Gingerol and shogaol are the active compounds found in ginger, and they relieve stomach irritations. The compounds encourage the production of saliva and bile, both of which are useful in food digestion. Ginger beer also relieves nausea.
  • Anti-bacterial – Ginger root contains anti-bacterial properties that are useful in flushing out fungi and bacteria from the body. When you make ginger beer an essential part of your cocktails, you decrease your need to depend on antibiotics to fight bacterial and fungal infections.
  • Fights Inflammation – Gingerol has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Drinking ginger beer can, therefore, help suppress inflammation associated with conditions such as hepatitis, arthritis, and gastritis.

  • Reduce heat, add sugar, then stir and simmer until it’s fully dissolved. Remove from the heat.
  • Add 40 ounces (5 cups) of water to the pot. Leave it to cool down to 23°c. Add yeast and stir.
  • Cover the pot with a clean cloth or towel, then store away from light in a warm place for 3 hours.
  • Using a strainer to remove bits of ginger, transfer the mixture into a pitcher.
  • Fill into glass bottles, only 2/3 full to allow for fermentation. Leave to ferment for 3 days.
  • Refrigerate to prevent further fermenting, or put in room temperature for more fermentation.

  15. Why Do Moscow Mules Come in Copper Mugs?

The reason your Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug is not a fluke. It is not because it's the latest trendy hipster craze. It's not just a marketing ploy (although it definitely started out as one), nor is it a conspiracy by the lobbyists for Big Copper. Moscow Mules come in copper mugs for three reasons: taste, temperature, and presentation.
