Experience of a Lifetime: Red Poppies Blooming in the Israeli Desert

kalanit travel

Fragile red bursts of beauty exploding into an oasis of glory, Israel’s poppies are certainly a sight to behold. Known as a  kalanit  in Hebrew (technically a poppy anemone), these red flowers are so loved that they are actually the National Flower of Israel. Countless songs have been written about their beauty and the direct translation of the name  Kalanit  in Hebrew means bride. Israelis love these flowers so much they are considered to be as beautiful as a bride on her wedding day.

Poppies – Symbol of Peace

The poppy is a beloved and popular flower all around the world. It has countless meaning and symbolisms across cultures and different colored blooms tend to represent different things. Among the ancient cultures, this flower usually symbolized peaceful sleep. Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians even used the poppy sap as a type of sedative to aid in sleeping. Within Greek mythology, the god of dreams – Morpheus boasted this flower as his symbol while in ancient Egypt, it symbolized Osiris, the god of death.

Red Poppies Israel

In the US, after World War I, the poppy became a symbol to memorialize fallen soldiers, while in some Eastern European countries it symbolized the opposite – love and success. In Israel, poppies are a symbol of life; as they are one of the first flowers to bloom after the long winter and they appear in some of the most unlikely places (like the desert).

kalanit travel

Best Places to See the Poppies in Israel

These beautiful, red poppies grow all around Israel at the beginning of spring until their eventual withering in the summer heat. Although they can be spotted all over the country, popping up in just about any grassy area, certain parts of the country dominate with their stunning display of crimson-covered fields.

Red Poppies Israel

South – Darom Adom

The Negev Desert is by far the most popular place to spot the poppies in Israel; marked by the famous festival called  Darom Adom . This festival was created exclusively to exemplify the yearly wonder of the arid south becoming covered in a carpet of red wildflowers. They are found at the Shokda Forest, Be’eri Forest, Kibbutz Dvir, and more. Check out  Darom Adom  for more details depending on the year.

Jerusalem Area & Jordan Valley

Jerusalem and the surrounding hilltops also flaunt an impressive array of blossoms, peaking a bit later than the south. They can be found all over the green hilltops, but we found the most beautiful show to be in the Jordan Valley, a small and fertile strip of land between the Jerusalem area and the Jordan River. If you drive along Route 90 you’ll not only have a stunning view of wildflower-covered fields and hills, but you can stop along the side, park the car, and relax in the swaying stems of beauty just waiting to be appreciated.

kalanit travel

When are the Poppies in Bloom?

Poppy season in Israel depends greatly on the geographical location. It can start as early as  January  and go until  April  (or even sometimes May), depending on the rains. They bloom earliest in the South and there is even an entire festival called  Darom Adom  in honor of the spectacular sight of thousands of red poppies dotting the otherwise barren desert-like hills. Even if you happen to miss the southern festival (like we did), don’t worry…the poppies bloom later in other parts of the country, so you will still have a chance to catch a few glimpses around Jerusalem or other more northern areas. However, remember that once the flowers blossom, they only stay alive for about one week!

Fashion Shoot in the Poppy Fields

Capturing the beauty of Israel poppy season is perhaps one of our absolute favorite things in the world. After a rainy and cold winter, there is little more exciting than seeing little bursts of life. We couldn’t resist creating two bright red dresses to take pictures in the glorious fields of poppies. The plan? Predominately red dresses with added highlights of black jewelry, earrings, bracelets…mimicking the poppy itself. Nothing better than copying nature in its beautiful perfection.

Red Poppies Israel

Handmade Red Poppy Dresses

Two dresses. Bright red fabric. Vintage patterns. Time to sew.

Dress 1: Audrey Hepburn 60s Style Gown

I found in our fabric stash a small piece of vintage red fabric from the 60s/70s. A little bit of a thick material with textured lines giving it a slightly striped effect. I used the pattern I made for my favorite vintage style little black dress with a form-fitting halter top. A pretty simple project with just five pieces, it didn’t take me that long to make. The biggest challenge was deciding on the length. Should I make it long and elegant or short and casual? In the end, I decided on the extravagant look. I can always cut it later once I get sick of the long look.

Red Poppies Israel

Dress 2- Dreamy and Flowy Set

Once the first dress was made, we had to create a matching beauty. We went fabric shopping at our fabric stores in Tel Aviv and found this beautiful semi-shiny red material, flowy and also textured similar to the vintage fabric. Looking through our vintage patterns we found a particularly beautiful 40s ballgown with a long billowing skirt. As it offered the option to make a separate skirt and wrap around top, we couldn’t resist. Although the full dress would certainly be a little much for everyday wear, if we made separates, the top could be used for work or as casual street clothes.

Red Poppies Israel

Fun Facts About Poppies

  • National Flower – Known in Hebrew as the kalanit (technically Poppy Anemone), they are so loved in Israel that they are the National Flower of Israel, with famous singers even creating songs lauding their beauty.
  • Poppy vs Anemone – in Israel there are two types of flowers that are very similar and grow nearby, making them have to differentiate; the כלנית (kalanit – anemone poppy) and the פרג (pereg – poppy). At first glance they look almost the same, but there are some slight differences that distinguish them.
  • Look but Don’t Touch – In Israel it is actually illegal to pick this lovely bloom. As tempting as it may be to take a few home, in fear of overpicking (as had happened in the past) Israel decided to make it illegal to pick these wildflowers in order to preserve them and prevent them from becoming endangered.
  • Poppy Seeds – Poppy seeds are actually illegal in some countries such as Saudi Arabia, China, Singapore, Taiwan, and the UAE due to potentially containing races of opiates.
  • Medicine – Ancient Egyptians doctors would prescribe poppy seeds to their patients for pain relief, which would have been effective as they actually contain small amounts of morpheine and codeine

MAGAZINE ABOUT LIFE IN ISRAEL

Scarlet flower season blossoms in israel.

Every year between January and March, a floral phenomenon unfolds across the southern fields of Israel. Aptly called Darom Adom, or Red South, thousands of red anemone flowers blossom to create beautiful red blankets of nature. The red anemone, called kalanit in Hebrew, is Israel’s National flower, and is celebrated every February with a Darom Adom Festival. Every year, thousands of Israelis travel down south to lavish in the sight of the scarlet scene.

The festival is held for about one month and hosts dozens of activities for flower seekers, from concerts to hikes to artist markets. The festival has been running since 2007, when locals realized how many visitors they would see looking for wildflowers though no one knew where they were.

The flowers blossom just after rainy season, when Israel’s normally dry climate gets hit with rainfall and causes the rise of red flowers. Another exotic flower hits the nature scene around the same time, called the Black Iris. The Black Iris is a rare find and can be seen only in two spots across Israel, in the Gilboa region in the north, or in the Argaman Iris Reserve near a more central Netanya.

While the rainy season in Israel can be dark and gloomy, the exotic displays of beauty is simple proof that rain is worthy of bringing blossoming roots which blanket what was once dry and empty.

The fascinating flower story of a poppy and a kalaniyot

Anemone coronaria, like those found in Shokeda forest in Israel, consist of a flower that blooms for a few weeks, opening and closing with the sunlight, and tracking the sun throughout the day.

“Kalaniyot” was the signature song of the wildly popular Israeli singer Shoshana Damari, who died in 2006. Designated as Israel’s national flower in 2013, it is usually translated as “poppy” in English.

Spring arrives earlier in Israel than in New York, and by February, kalaniyot can be seen throughout the country, although it is a particular tourist attraction in the Eshkol region of the northwest Negev, where it is colloquially called darom adom . In Hebrew, darom refers to cardinal direction south, and adom means “red,” so darom adom can be freely translated as “the south is awash in red.”

After the winter rains, that image is vibrantly true. Green grass covers the fields intermixed with multitudes of kalaniyot. Closer examination, however, made it clear that these are not poppies — family Papaveraceae , genus Papaver . Instead, they are Anemone coronaria , family Ranunculaceae .

Löw Immanuel was a Hungarian rabbi interested in rabbinic lexicography (the compiling of dictionaries), and the identification of many plants referenced in the Hebrew Bible and the Talmud using the latest scientific information of his time. Knowing that the Talmud was written in Aramaic explains the title of his doctoral thesis, itself written in German — “Aramaeische Pflanzennamen,” or “Aramaic Plant Names.”

His work deeply influenced that of Yehuda Feliks, considered today to be one of the greatest scholars of Jewish botany.

The kalanit (singular form) was named by Immanuel based on two sources. It was likely that this is the same flower mentioned in the Talmud as klonita . In addition, the Hebrew word for “bride” is kalla , and the name plays on the concept that all brides are radiant.

Anemone tubers can be bought in the United States, and are referred to as wind flowers. That designation is based on the Greek, where anemoi means “wind,” and one means “daughter of.” Despite that name, a Greek myth tells of the handsome Adonis who died in the arms of his beloved Aphrodite after being gored by a boar. Her tears and his blood mingled on the ground and gave birth to the red anemones.

While purple, white and blue kalaniyot grow in northern Israel, the southern plants only bloom red. This red color dominance seems to correlate with the area’s greater aridity. Each flower blooms for a few weeks, opening and closing with the sunlight, tracking the sun throughout the day.

Anemone coronaria also can be found in Greece, Turkey as well as throughout the Middle East.

Poppies, however — known as pereg in Hebrew — grow in abundance all over Israel. Altogether, nine different species can be found, most beginning their bloom season in March, and none lasting past June. Different species have different ranges, but the only area that doesn’t support a population is the Negev. This genus is originally native to cold and temperate regions of Eurasia, Africa and North America.

The poppy is a favorite in spring gardens in the United States as well. However, it is the Papaver somniferum — somniferum meaning “sleep-bringing” in Latin — and the ancient Sumerians call Hul Gil (the flower of joy) that brings mixed blessings. The oozing sap that can be collected from seed pod after the flowers fall away is the source of opium.

While it is legal to buy seed in the United States and grow the flowers, it is illegal to grow them with the intent of producing opium.

However, these self-same poppies also are grown for three additional — and non-problematic — purposes. The same seed pods that can yield opium, if left to grow undisturbed, are intricately beautiful and prized for use in dried botanical arrangements.

Additionally, these seed pods — again, if left undisturbed — are the source of poppy seeds used in baking and confectionary. Often, the seeds are only used decoratively, as when added to the glaze on bread and rolls. The flavor is significantly more intense when grounded and made into a paste, and appears frequently in Jewish and Eastern European baking, as well as Indian cuisine.

The seeds are so tiny that it takes between 1 million and 2 million of them to make up a pound.

The aromatic chemical responsible for its unique flavor is 2-pentylfuran, which also can be found in other foods, including coffee, potatoes, roasted filberts and soybean oil.

Finally, the seeds yield 45 to 50 percent oil when pressed. It has culinary and pharmaceutical uses as well as uses in paints, varnishes and soaps.

Despite the insignificant levels of opiates in the poppy seeds themselves, eating them can cause a false positive in a drug test. Because of this effect, the federal guidelines that constitute opioid levels had to be raised to distinguish a drug user from a poppy seed eater.
