The $5 (and Under) Kmart Hacks That Will Change The Way You Travel With Kids

easy Kmart travel hacks for kids

Have kids. Will travel. Will also pack 15 bags worth of clothes, toiletries, toys and snacks every single time.

But not anymore you can stop bringing your entire house with you every time you leave the house thanks to these clever mums and their super cheap kmart travel hacks..

Going bag-free when you have kids is impossible. You’re always going to need to bring the basics and the bare essentials – water, nappies, sunscreen, hats, extra clothing, snacks. When you’re going away for the night, you can add a few more things – toothpaste, shampoo, soap, pillows, blankies, stuffed animals….

But these Kmart travel hacks are designed to make travelling, whether going out for a day or a month, SO MUCH EASIER. And, best of all, they cost pretty much next to nothing.

For your toiletries

mum central

The latest Kmart hack to hit our social media feeds is the $3 Kmart travel bottle hack. Gone are the days of re-packing your bag every time you leave the house and digging inside your bag for 15 minutes (and pulling out a handful of tampons while doing so).

All you need to pull off the travel bottle hack are a few empty travel bottles ($3 for two at Kmart but you can pick these up basically anywhere) and some lanyards. Simply fill the bottles with your everyday outing essentials like sunscreen, hand sanitiser and nappy cream. For weekends away, camping or swimming lessons even? Shampoo, conditioner and shower gel.

But the ideas don’t end there – you can fill these bad boys up with pretty much anything – Aloe vera, medicine, hand cream, band-aids, itty bitty snacks, a shot of vodka even! Oh, and tampons.

For your passports

mum central

Fishing through your bag looking for your passports is pretty much standard at the airport. But it doesn’t have to be!

Sure, you can purchase one of those bulky overpriced passport holders. Or, you can use a pencil case and save a small fortune. Another brilliant Kmart loving mum opted to hack the Kmart Zip Pencil Case into a passport and document holder.

“The front section fits five passports and the back section I sewed elastic strips to hold all of our paperwork,” C helsea Ekonomopoulos explains .

For your clothes

mum central

If you’re heading out of town for a night or more, then you will be packing extra clothes. And probably preparing for a massive mess every time your child needs to get dressed.

Enter the Ziplock bag. That’s right – a pack of $2 Ziplock bags will save you from this disorganisational nightmare.

Simply place each outfit in its own Ziplock bag (and add a label if you want). That way you can keep track of what’s clean and what’s dirty. Rachel from Small Notebook came up with the idea and we are loving it! Sure beats watching the kids dig through the suitcase every morning and complain about not having any jocks.

Want to take this Kmart travel hack up to another level? Add a dryer sheet to each Ziplock bag. It will keep the clothes smelling fresh, even if you’re sleeping in a rain-soaked tent.

Looking for more mum hacks? We have you covered! Check out this easy way to get babies to take their medicine , and this simple solution for scream-free splinter removal. And, because it’s impossible to go into Kmart for just one item, have a look at these other 7 clever Kmart hacks every parent needs to know.

‘Embarrassing’ Kmart travel hack to sleep on a long flight

Travellers say they swear by this “awkward looking” pillow and Australians can get their hands on it at Kmart.

Heads up! This is the hottest traveller’s must-have for bedding down.

Getting cozy on an aeroplane — namely in the middle seat of a cramped three-person row — is virtually impossible.

But frequent flyers with a penchant for comfort have recently discovered a blow-up accoutrement that’s putting sleepyheads to rest, NY Post reports.

“When you got the middle seat for a 13-hour plane ride,” wrote adventurer Annie Wright, 23, in the captions of a trending TikTok testimonial dedicated to the kooky-looking, yet in-demand inflatable travel pillow.

In the viral video, which has breezed in a whopping 26.6 million views, Ms Wright, a law student in the US, shared footage of herself puffing into the plushy prop that’s offered by Amazon.

But Australians will be pleased to know the inflatable front travel pillow can be found at Kmart for $18.

“I wasn’t sure if I’d like it and omg SO worth it!” cheered Ms Wright in the clip’s caption. “Total upgrade.”

And this isn’t your mama’s rinky-dink around-the-neck pad.

The expandable cushion, designed with an ergonomic 45-degree angle that offers support to the head and neck, features a 2-in-1 dual valve that allows the foldable nylon to inflate into a 19.7-inch-tall accessory in a mere five seconds, per Amazon.

Once inflated, users are meant to position the pillow — created with a face cutout at its apex and two arm holes on its sides — on their passenger tray tables and lean forward into a relaxed position.

“The hollow design in the middle of the inflatable neck pillow conforms to the curve of the human abdomen, allowing you to breathe more easily while you sleep,” read the site, adding that its unique shape, too, reduces cervical spine pressure and provides optimal support for your upper body.

“The cutouts on both sides allow you to comfortably hold the plane pillow and relax your arms,” continued the description. “You can also listen to music and watch videos while using a plane neck pillow.”

The hot commodity’s details also noted that it can “help you stay away from injury and insomnia, make you rest more comfortable during the journey, easier to fall asleep, and sleep longer.”

The “awkward looking” pillow is sold at Kmart in Australia for $18. Picture: Kmart

Kmart’s description for its pillow is much shorter: “Say goodbye to travelling in discomfort with this inflatable front pillow that allows your head and neck to lean forward naturally.”

In a review titled “I am prepared to be laughed at”, one Kmart shopper said it was “awkward looking” but “really comfortable” and perfect for long-haul flights.

Comfortably catching Z’s during a flight has become a top priority for rest-seeking jetsetters.

Folks under the #InflatableTravelPillow TikTok hashtag have hailed the headrest the “travel hack of the year.”

However, haters of the portable bedding have deemed it an “embarrassment.”

“My back just hurts watching this,” said a digital detractor beneath Ms Wright’s post.

“Yeah I have social anxiety I would be too embarrassed to use it,” penned another.

More Coverage

“I’m too claustrophobic for this,” said a separate naysayer.

But in response to the criticisms, Ms Wright wrote, “People keep saying this [pillow] is embarrassing, but what’s more embarrassing is being caught with your mouth open just knocked out.”

Qantas has made a “historic” touchdown in this Aussie hotspot as the carrier gears up to bring more “game-changing” aircraft to the country.

Jetstar has issued an urgent reminder to passengers of embattled airline Bonza to take up the airline on a specific offer before this weekend.

In just over two weeks, Qantas will launch into a destination the airline hasn’t touched in 20 years. And now, a new menu to match has been revealed.

There’s nothing more annoying than lugging around heavy shampoo and conditioner bottles when you’re travelling with your family .

Luckily, one very clever Perth mum has shared the perfect hack to make travelling shower times easy peasy.

Nat Stein simply bought a few of Kmart’s little travel bottle sets (they come in packs of two for $3 each), filled them with shampoo, conditioner and body wash, and popped them on a lanyard.

And there you have it – a handy little portable travel set that the kids won’t lose.

“Kmart sell these travel bottles in a 2 pack for $3. Filled them with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel and attached to a lanyard,” Stein wrote on Facebook.

“Perfect for my girls when we go camping to take to the showers. Also would be good for swimming lessons. I have ordered some stickers.”

Stein's post was immediate hit with parents everywhere and it's already been shared over 1000 times.

“This will be brilliant for my sons first school camp next year!” one parent commented.

“I’m so doing this!! Perfect for camping and sunscreen in school bags during summer,” someone else commented.

While another mum rushed out to Kmart straight away and filled her bottles with sunscreen.

You can find the nifty little travel bottles in makeup section at Kmart.

This definitely gets a big, beautiful tick from us.

“Something’s Gotta Give” Balancing Work & Family

The 'awkward' $18 Kmart buy travellers are obsessed with for long flights

By Kristine Tarbert | 11 months ago

Getting comfortable on a long flight can be a mission, but a Kmart travel buy is set to be the answer to our prayers – at least according to these travellers.

The inflatable front travel pillow from the popular department store only costs $18 and is receiving rave reviews online.

"If you can't sleep on planes, you need this inflatable travel pillow. Total game changer for long flights," one traveller shared on a recent TikTok.

Watch the video above.

Meanwhile, traveller Jess shared in a clip that she had "the best sleep she's ever had on a plane" thanks to the pillow.

"I slept for like 10 hours which was a lot of the time and it was heaps comfy," she said.

Though she admitted it was "embarrassing blowing up" but it was worth it.

In the comments others raved about the buy, with one person writing: "So good just used it for my 24 hours to Europe! With a window seat and on the side it's also amazing."

The Kmart buy is 48cm in height and 30cm in width when inflated and can be folded into a small pouch.

Once inflated, travellers place it on their knees, or the tray table, and rest their hands through the gaps on its sides.

On Kmart's website, the pillow has also received plenty of five-star reviews, despite the fact some people agree using it is a bit "awkward".

"Yeah it is awkward looking but actually is really comfortable and perfect for long plane rides," one person wrote. "Blows up very easy and also easy to deflate. A little tough to get back into the carry bag is my only complaint."

"It's been great I highly recommend it especially for night flight," another added.

Kmart isn't the only place you can buy one either, with a very similar version available to purchase on Amazon .

Kmart shopper shares ‘game changer’ hack for road trips with kids.

Amy Sinclair

UK traveller's warning about Kmart goes viral

A Kmart shopper has been praised for her simple hack that promises to make any road trip with kids a breeze.

Sharing on a popular Facebook page, mum-of-five Bianca revealed how she made huge snack boxes for each of her children during a recent interstate drive using an unlikely $5 Kmart buy.

Bianca says she bought five of the retail giant’s 12 Compartment Organiser boxes to hold a dozen different foods and treats for the long trip.

While the containers are usually used to store screws, nails and even fishing needs, mums have started using them to hold snacks for camping, picnicking - and now driving.

“Game changer!” wrote Bianca on the Kmart Hacks & Decor page.

“These storage box organisers seen from other people’s hacks (thank you) have been a life saver.

Mum Bianca used Kmart's 12-Compartment Organiser containers to make snack boxes for her kids to eat during their car trip.

“We drove to Adelaide (7.5 hours) with our five children and they have loved having food at their fingertips and it’s been peaceful for mum and dad too.

“Thanks Kmart!”

With so many families planning road trip getaways with changing border restrictions in Australia, many agreed it was a great idea.

“So copying this,” said one.

Said another: “Seen this before, but never thought to do it for the car. Great idea.”

Said a third: “Oh totally doing this! Thank you great idea for a big drive.”

Our 10 favorite travel hacks

Want to travel better? The Upgrade has your back.

kmart travel hacks

The Upgrade is By The Way’s series offering guest writers a place to share their travel hacks and hot takes. For every edition, illustrator extraordinaire Min Heo animates the advice. Below are some of our most popular entries. Some may look basic, but ask yourself: Are you optimizing your travel routine?

Want to write your own Upgrade? See how to submit here .

Dress up for your flight

David Coggins longs for the Cary Grant era of aviation, wishing more passengers would step up their game to bring some dignity and glamour to the experience. The author of “ Men and Style ” argues that making a sartorial effort shows respect to gate agents and flight attendants in uniforms — and your fellow passengers.

“I realize this is a losing battle, but it’s still a good fight,” Coggins writes. “If a sweatsuit is your truth, then there’s nothing else I can say, other than nobody has looked good in a sweatsuit in the history of the world.”

He’s not sure if wearing that checked blazer will really get you upgraded to first class , but it couldn’t hurt.

Visit ‘second cities’ in Europe

Rick Steves is our favorite pétanque-playing philanthropist . He’s a respected travel expert, too. In his beloved Europe, Rick recommends you break up every visit to a capital with a final day in a “ second city .” Think Porto vs. Lisbon , Glasgow vs. Edinburgh and Marseille vs. Paris .

“While lacking the popularity and the bucket-list sights,” Steves writes, “Europe’s second cities tend to enjoy a creative edge, a strong civic spirit, a Rust Belt toughness, fun-loving eateries with cutting-edge menus, entertaining street art … and far fewer tourists, which also means lower prices, a more authentic welcome and arguably a more honest cultural experience.”

Pick your travel uniform

Like Steve Jobs and many practitioners of quiet luxury , travel writer Jessica Poitevien is all about eliminating decision fatigue. Standardizing a set of clothes only for flying doesn’t just help you streamline your packing routine. Poitevien “doesn’t worry about leaving anything important behind, because I have two of everything: one that’s for home and one that sits in my backpack waiting for the next trip. All I add is my passport, laptop and current reading material, and I’m good to go.”

What’s her uniform look like?

“My top is always a long, loosefitting T-shirt or sweater, so I’m covered through all the bending and lifting that happens with luggage and going through security,” Poitevien writes. “I add a jean jacket to stay warm on those freezing planes and use its inner pockets to keep my phone, passport and boarding pass within easy reach.”

Cut your airport arrival dangerously close

It’s not for the faint of heart, but travel writer Brad Japhe wants to waste as little of his life in airports as possible.

“I live about five miles from Los Angeles International Airport,” Japhe writes, “and if my scheduled domestic flight is at, say, 9 a.m., I’m comfortable entering an Uber up until 8:32 a.m.”

Besides some serious bravado, pulling this off requires the use of PreCheck or Clear, among other conditions:

 • Traveling solo .
 • Express security lanes .
 • A familiar airport.
 • No checked bags .

Order the Hindu meal

Food and travel writer David Farley thinks we should reject the binary of chicken or pasta in favor of a plant-based meal that exudes spice . By reserving a Hindu meal on your next long-haul flight, you could be treating yourself to dal makhani and naan, or bhindi masala and raita. As long as you reserve your meal at least 24 hours ahead of your flight, airlines told us, you won’t be taking a special one away from anyone else.

Get up early on vacation

Life is short. So take a cue from the dad playbook, and seize the vacation day with an early wake-up call . For Deputy Features Editor Amanda Finnegan , rising with the sun means hours of calm before your travel partners join you. And by 10 a.m., you’re ready for your first nap.

Make a fashion statement in black and blue

Rachel Tashjian ’s job is cooler than your job. As a fashion writer, she flies to Europe three or four times a year for work, watching extravagant clothes appear in fashion shows for weeks at a time . It’s a dream, but there’s an understandable amount of pressure to look amazing every single day. Enter the black-and-blue hack . By mixing a pop of navy in with a collection of dark pieces, you’re making the daring choice to break one of the primary rules of fashion.

Her packing list:

 • Two skirts: something that flows and something that hugs.
 • Three jackets: a classic blazer, something weird and an open-front wool jacket.
 • One pair of trousers.
 • One black dress.
 • Three T-shirts.
 • Black shoes.

Stop eating airport food

Noah Galuten is a hero hubby. By the simple act of making his wife a sandwich to take to the airport, the Los Angeles-based chef and author had the epiphany that we should all swear off precooked egg patties forever .

Sure, you could settle for upcharged coffee, a Dunkin’ wrap or a sad Caesar from “Weirdly Branded Bar & Grill You Have Never Heard Of.” Or, you could be the game-changer for your household, whipping up breakfast burritos or English muffin sandwiches — or just buying a better sandwich in advance in the real world (see: Emily’s Pork Store , Brooklyn).

Take a solo trip

The secret to a happy relationship is compromise. And giving your partner time to travel solo — especially if you’ve got a kid at home.

That’s the philosophy preached by writer Austin Graff , an extrovert who has learned to appreciate the benefits of going it alone: It’s easier to get into top-rated restaurants, there’s time to wander, and you return to your family more thoughtful and present.

Take a buffer day

The weekend-warrior routine is for people in their 20s. Once you’re in your 30s, Rachel Orr writes, you know well enough to quit pushing so hard and to give yourself an extra day to chill before rushing back to work . “Think of it as a mini staycation at the end of your vacation,” she suggests.

Two unlikely Kmart items transform into stylish side table for just $32

By Rachael Gavin | 3 weeks ago

A Kmart shopper has stumbled on a clever hack that transforms two items designed for different purposes into a budget-friendly side table.

The DIY side table isn't just affordable though, it's also stylish and creates bonus storage for the living room.

The woman shared photos of the hack with the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia Facebook group.

Side table hack using Kmart planter and tray

"This Kmart serving tray and the 38cm linear plastic pot fit like a glove .. perfect for small side table and you could store blanket inside or toys," she captioned the post.

To do the hack yourself you'll need the 38cm linear plastic pot, which costs $20 and the white carved tray for $12, that means the entire project costs $32.

The 38cm linear plastic pot is designed to hold plants and features white ribbed detailing.

The white carved tray, meanwhile, is made of MDF, has a diameter of 37cm and has a textured dot pattern.

Basically all it takes to make the side table is popping the tray on top of the pot.

Kmart DIY hacks

The side table hack was a hit with the Facebook group, attracting 2000 likes and more than 200 comments.

"I love this. Gotta go find me a pot. Have the top already," one said.

"Wow this looks amazing!!" commented another.

"Amazing idea I killed my plant was in this pot might have to give this ago," wrote a Kmart fan.

If the white carved tray isn't your style, a member of the group also tried Kmart's $19 bamboo lazy Susan, which also fit in the pot but had a slight overhang.

A few people did mention the tray didn't quite fit perfectly in the top of the pot, but one woman said she eventually managed to make it work.

"Note: So I just did this and the tray can be a little bit fiddly and falls inside. You've gotta get it just right. I'm not sure I would put a burning candle on it just in case someone knocks it and the candle falls inside (and you have synthetic or woollen throws it would catch on fire in a second). Otherwise they look absolutely amazing in my hallway which I will use for slippers instead of the shoe rack hack," she said.

Sometimes eating out is part of the joy of travel, but tourist destinations always pump up prices, making the same meals you might find in a different part of town significantly pricier. Not everyone wants to cook on vacation, either.

Find Out: 9 Costco Brand Items That Aren't Worth the Money
More: 3 Easy Tips To Turn Your Credit Woes Into Wows

To save money on food while you travel, these experts weigh in with their tips.

When it comes to traveling, frequent and casual travelers alike often look for ways to save money and time, or make the trip the best it can be. Common travel hacks include searching for flights in incognito tabs, traveling during the off-season, and using hotel booking sites to score the cheapest accommodations.

While some of these travel hacks have served people well over the years, many of them either don't work anymore or don't work like they used to. Sometimes, these so-called travel hacks end up costing more money in the long run -- or they detract from the entire experience.

Before you book your next trip, here are 11 travel hacks to avoid in 2024, according to experts .

Hidden City Ticketing, aka Skiplagging

"Booking a flight with a layover at your actual destination, and then skipping the connecting flight will backfire because the airline will cancel the remaining parts of your ticket, leaving you stranded or facing additional fees," said Kat Fleishman , a luxury travel expert and CEO of Do-Tell PR .

This so-called travel hack referred to as "skiplagging" might seem more cost effective than booking a direct flight. However, you won't be able to check any bags if you do this. It's also technically legal, but could result in lost miles or lifetime bans from that specific airline.

Buying a Cheap Flight Over a Pricier Train Ticket

You might save money by purchasing a cheap airplane ticket over a train ticket, but money isn't everything when it comes to traveling.

"Some train journeys may cost more than a cheap flight but the beauty of a train ride is the greater flexibility from the booking system to being able to jump off at a certain point in the journey -- much less stressful and also enjoyable," said Jessica Dante , a leading travel expert at Love and London. "Boarding is much also less hassle, there are no luggage restrictions and inevitably more leg room."

Plus, you could save money -- or at least break even -- by taking a train over a flight. Luggage fees can add up when you fly, and many airports are located far from the city center, which means you'll need to spend more money on a taxi or public transport to reach your destination.

Traveling Only During the Off-Season

Off-season travel is often less expensive than any other time, but not always.

"There has been a lot of talk around the benefits of off-season travel recently, which presents this as a travel hack for getting the best prices. In some cases, visiting during these quieter periods can offer a unique and more affordable experience. However, sometimes, they are just less popular times to visit for a reason," said Jan Luescher, CEO of luxury travel social network, ASmallWorld .

"Visiting certain destinations during their quieter periods significantly limits what you can do there and causes you to miss out on some of the best things to do and see because they are not open or safe to visit at this time," she continued.

If you miss something you really wanted to do, it might require a second trip to the same place. Or you might not enjoy yourself quite as much as you'd hoped.

While it isn't always easy to plan a trip so far ahead of time, the price that you pay will be worth it!

Whether you're still in the planning phase or have a definite destination, start reserving early in the planning process. Booking Non-Refundable Accommodations Early

"While early bookings can secure lower rates, committing to non-refundable accommodations too far in advance puts a damper on flexibility," said Fleishman. Buying Cheap Airline Tickets but Ignoring Layover Times

"Traveling further afield often means catching a connecting flight and a common hack or tip for planning an indirect journey is checking the layover time to ensure it gives you enough time to disembark one flight and get onto the next," said Luescher.

But even if you account for the layover time, you might be forgetting a very important detail: The size and layout of the connecting airport.

"It's easy to get lulled in a false sense of security that because these connecting flights are available to buy, the layover time must be fine," Luescher continued. "However, each airport and airline can have very different rules for connecting travelers that require you to set aside different lengths of time."

Most international airports, for instance, have additional security checkpoints or requirements. You might even have to claim and recheck your luggage during the layover, depending on your destination. This can cut into your layover time quite a bit.

Some airports are also massive, so it could take you even more time to get to your gate. If you don't account for all of these factors, you could end up missing your flight -- and having to buy a new ticket.

On the flipside, if your layover time is substantial, you could end up wasting valuable time that cuts into your trip.

You get three times the miles on every dollar you spend on travel and dining, but you don’t have to fly a particular carrier or stay in a certain hotel. The interest rate is reasonable, and the annual fee is waived for the first year. Some travel cards only let you redeem your miles for more travel, but with this one, you can also redeem them for cash.

Getting Bulk Airline Miles

Airline miles, or frequent flyer points, rack up for frequent travelers. When you have enough of them, you can redeem them for discounted future flights, rental cars, accommodations and more.

But don't buy them in bulk to try to get more points quickly.

"Buying airline miles or loyalty points at a discounted rate is not OK by the airlines and there's a risk of having your account suspended or worse," said Fleishman.

Searching for Flights in Incognito Tabs

"A common travel tip people have been following for years is that you should search for flights in private Incognito mode and clear your browser cookies to see the lowest fares," said Mercedes Zach, travel expert at ASAP Tickets , part of Trevolution Group.

"This approach comes from the belief that airlines are using browser cookies to track your searches and will show you higher prices if you do several searches for a particular destination within a short period of time," Zach continued. "In reality, airfare pricing is dynamic and constantly fluctuates and Incognito mode has no impact on it."

Just because a price drops for a specific flight doesn't mean it's because of the way you searched for it. If you want to get the best fares, set up alerts on Google Flights or a similar platform.

Using Free Wi-Fi

There are lots of hidden fees when it comes to traveling, so you might be tempted to find even small ways to save money. One such way is to use free Wi-Fi, but there are many scams that can end up costing you.

"Beware of hackers who set up fake Wi-Fi networks with names similar to legitimate hotel networks to trick travelers into connecting," said Fleishman. "Using unsecured networks can expose personal information. It's safer to use a hotel's official Wi-Fi or a virtual private network (VPN) for added security."

Though traveling has eased up again, with relaxed COVID-19 health protocols and an increase in vaccinated Americans, it has definitely not become cheaper. If anything, airline prices are on the rise again as travelers set out in droves.

Learn More: How To Budget and Plan For a Vacation in 2021
See: Travel Prep: 10 Financial To-Dos Before Going on a Trip

So if you’re looking to fly somewhere but don’t want to spend a lot of money, finding the cheapest flight is probably top of your list. Booking Flights on Tuesdays

If you've been booking flights on Tuesdays in the hopes of saving money, chances are it isn't actually working.

"I have been with a flight booking agency for several years now and I cannot say for sure that Tuesdays are cheaper than other days. Flight fares are dynamic and constantly fluctuate," said Shreya Patel, marketing manager at Lowest Flight Fares . "A flight from Austin to Boston may cost you around $114 on a Tuesday and $89 on a Saturday."

Instead of booking flights based on the day of the week, compare different options around the time when you want to travel. Patel also suggested booking between 21 and 115 days before your trip for the best prices.

Dressing Nicely To Get Upgrades

Some travelers swear by this travel hack, but there's not much proof that it actually works.

"What you are wearing at the check-in counter has no influence on the agent. Moreover, the airline already decides where its passengers are going to sit before they even leave the house," said Patel.

"For example, British Airways' check-in automatically upgrades passengers if it is required, based on the ticket cost, frequent flyer status, whom you are traveling with or if you have any special needs," Patel said. "The agents on the ground can no longer upgrade you."

Directo turns a TikTok travel hack into a deal-finding Chrome extension

Directo team photo

A travel hack that went viral on TikTok teaches users how to save money on hotels and Airbnbs by booking directly with the properties themselves. Now, a new startup, Directo , will help travelers find those same deals with the help of a Chrome extension that points you to the property’s website, where you’ll often find discounted rates as the property doesn’t have to pay commission on those sales.

Across social media, creators and influencers post variations of a money-saving hack that teaches users how to find a cheaper way to book a room or a home stay. This often involves using reverse image search on photos of the listing to find the property’s website — something that can be particularly useful when booking longer stays where the savings can really add up.

@humphreytalks Money Hacks 💰 (1st Hack Credit: All the Hacks Podcast) #lifehack #learnontiktok #tiktokpartner ♬ SUNNY DAY – Matteo Rossanese

Of course, booking directly may have its risks. You may not have the same travel assurances and protections compared with bigger websites, like Booking.com, Expedia or Airbnb. But when travelers are looking at savings in the hundreds of dollars or more, they often opt to take their chances.

The idea for Directo came about from watching this emerging behavior among Gen Z users and realizing that it could be better automated, while also adding in some safety protections of its own, says co-founder and co-CEO Pierre Becerril .

“What we’re doing is we’re trying to work with professional inventory that uses great software — so at least you know that this part is secured,” said Becerril, whose background is in the travel industry, after participating in a TechCrunch hackathon inspired him to join the tech industry. Most recently, the Madrid-based, third-time founder sold his startup Transparent, a software company focused on the vacation rental market, to Lighthouse, where he worked before starting Directo.

Becerril explains that many hotel sites today run what he calls “very good tech” and feature powerful booking engines, but they aren’t the first place users go to book. Instead, consumers tend to go to online aggregators and larger websites where they can search across a wider inventory of listings.

“The big websites like Expedia, Booking.com and Airbnb have the monopoly for search and distribution,” Becerril said. “It’s a pity because they charge commission and you can go book direct on these great websites where there’s no commission — and maybe some perks.”

Some savvy travelers already figured this out, finding they could avoid the extra fees and cleaning charges on Airbnbs by booking from the property’s website itself, which they found using a reverse image search.

@chelletravelfoto Reverse image search for the win! 💪 #airbnb #travelhacks #traveltips #budgettravel ♬ Tomorrow – Adrian Berenguer

Directo aims to make it easier to book directly by identifying those properties that it knows to use a modern tech stack that promises a safe checkout process. That can, at least, alleviate users’ concerns that the sites will work correctly and their credit card transactions will be secure. It also relies on its community to submit other websites for consideration and to flag those where they successfully found great deals.

The Chrome extension works on a variety of top travel sites, like Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO, Expedia and Abritel, with more being added in the future. It identifies the properties where you can book directly with a yellow-and-black “D” icon. Those where users reported getting a good deal will also feature a cheers emoji of hands clapping. If users report the deals aren’t great, Directo can take that information to the hotels and use that to try to negotiate for a voucher or discount for its customers.

“It’s a little bit like Honey,” says Becerril, referring to the deal-finding browser add-on PayPal acquired for $4 billion in 2019.

Also like Honey, the extension is free to use by consumers, who can download it from the Chrome Web Store . The startup generates revenue by selling a subscription to hotels that can improve their connectivity with Directo by pushing special deals to its users and members. These funds are currently being reinvested in marketing to grow its consumer install base.

In testing, Directo reached 115,000 users and now includes nearly 200,000 hospitality brands that each has at least one property in its database of inventory. Combined, that represents millions of properties and rooms around the world.

The startup itself was co-founded by digital nomad and co-CEO Marina Guastavino, CTO Julian Toledo and Sofia Canepa (Growth and Product Development). Becerril wasn’t able to join full-time until a couple of months ago due to obligations following the sale of his prior company.

Directo has $1 million in pre-seed funding from French VC firm Kima Ventures; Calafia, an angel group of Global Female Tech Leaders; travel specialist fund Derive Ventures; and 26 travel industry veterans.
