The Process

In mid-2019, Visit Phoenix embarked on a mission to conduct a brand assessment, develop a positioning strategy and provide a visual identity for the Greater Phoenix area as a desired destination for leisure and meetings travel. 

Greater Phoenix has long been known for its luxury resort offerings, including golf and spa amenities as well as the outdoor recreation options that come with our surrounding mountains. With the development of the city’s urban core, Phoenix has become a tale of two cities. Downtown Phoenix is anchored by the Phoenix Convention Center, three major hotels, the Phoenix Bioscience Core and Arizona State University — and the area is growing and evolving daily. New residences, innovative restaurant concepts, cocktail bars and an active arts and culture scene have transformed this once-sleepy downtown into a lively, walkable urban destination. 

This created an opportunity to rebrand the overall destination in a way that reflects this transformation. Our resort and urban characteristics are equally important to the identity of the destination, so with this opportunity comes the challenge of applying one brand to these different “personalities” as well as the variety of audiences that we serve.   

A selection committee, composed of both internal Visit Phoenix representation and external visitor industry supporters, chose Sunshine & Bourbon (formerly BCF) to complete this rebrand effort. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting the timeline, the new Visit Phoenix brand was completed by late 2020. Initial elements of the rebrand were released during the 2020 Phoenix Fest: Annual Meeting, followed by the release of the corresponding Style Guide in late December.

In partnership with W5, Sunshine & Bourbon set out to discover Phoenix’s product truth through extensive analysis of both stakeholder and visitor research as well as a quest to understand competitor destinations, learn about the consumer, and better assess the current state of visitation to Phoenix.    

This effort, along with the continual data being produced and reviewed by Visit Phoenix’s in-house research team, created a foundation for the new brand that not only reflects the local sentiment, but also the visitor experience.  

Stakeholder Research

Methodology : The BCF-Visit Phoenix team spoke with over 50 tourism stakeholders during Fall/Winter 2019. In-depth interviews with individuals and small groups of stakeholders were conducted in-person and by phone.  Additionally, a short survey was administered to Visit Phoenix members. This survey consisted of both open- and close-ended questions about experiences in the Greater Phoenix area. Approximately 50 members responded. 

Findings : Universally, stakeholders attributed a sense of possibility and positivity to the Sonoran Desert setting they call home. “Being outside in Phoenix allows the rest of the world to fade away.” The warmth, sunshine, mountains, and desert allow a true connection with nature, which, in turn, fuels one’s outlook and output. “Optimism is institutionalized in Phoenix.” 

Stakeholders view the city as conducive to “blazing one’s own trail.” Individualism is valued. It underpins the region’s cultural, culinary, business and academic innovation. “Change is constant here. We have a start-up culture.” Entrepreneurism and inventiveness define the destination’s character. 

The destination’s youth helps explain Phoenix. Downtown Phoenix rivals other major urban areas in its spaciousness, cleanliness and originality. “There’s room to plug in to all manner of self-expression.” Downtown is described as “rich, fertile territory for ideas.” Aspiration and inspiration define the cultural movement of the city. Downtown Phoenix’s newness also describes its rapidly growing infrastructure. This includes newly renovated and newly repurposed office buildings, the Phoenix Convention Center, hotels, top-tier entertainment and culinary options, a bioscience core, an ASU campus, major league sports venues plus proximity to the airport. “All of these new features create distinct advantages for business travelers.” 

Phoenix is well poised to capitalize on the emerging requirements of meeting planners. “From conference room to collaborative experience, from breakout session to hiking trail,” planners are looking for destinations that can deliver more than simply the typical package of rooms, restaurants and meeting space, although those requirements are still essential. “Unique experiences that make meetings imaginative and meaningful” place Phoenix in a competitive position for business and group travel. 

The “innovation and industriousness” of the Native people who created the city in the first millennium are still evident in Phoenix. “Incomparable forward momentum fueled by ancient energies” was a distinct thread identified in stakeholder research. The Greater Phoenix area has produced examples of engineering and artistic advances since the Sonoran Desert’s earliest known occupants. “Ingenuity and vision have been part of our culture since the Hohokam.” Phoenix continues to showcase links to these ancient stories as well as abundant evidence of continued imagination. “The mythology of the Phoenix bird makes sense here.” 

Phoenix’s culture of creativity can also be attributed to the disposition of locals who are consistently described as “openminded,” “collaborative,” and “welcoming.” Transplants and visitors from around the globe are attracted to Phoenix’s weather, affordability, lifestyle and disposition. “We have people coming from all over. You don’t have to be from here to get things done. There are opportunities.” 

Visitor Research

Methodology : W5 conducted an online quantitative survey with a sample of 1,600 (N=1,600) respondents who are residents of select markets in the United States (Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas), Mexico (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Hermosillo), and Canada (Calgary, Toronto). Respondents were required to have either visited Phoenix in the past 18 months or have been planning to visit in the next 18 months for leisure. 

The nine-minute survey was fielded December 9, 2019, through January 9, 2020, with questions addressing the following topics: 

General traveler profile 

Drivers to Phoenix visitation 

Image of Phoenix 

Evaluation of potential Phoenix messaging 

Image of other travel destinations 

Demographic profiling 

Findings : People generally travel for two main occasions: to relax and revitalize, and to escape routine. There is a wide range of additional reasons, but around 15% of respondents selected each one.  

People travel to Phoenix for the beautiful mountains, nature and sightseeing. Specifically, they participate in a wide variety of activities, including going somewhere with a beautiful view, experiencing the local food and drink culture, exploring downtown/shopping, getting outdoors, and other culture-centered activities. Ultimately, they also believe that Phoenix is a relaxing place to visit. 

 Phoenix met travelers’ need to visit places with beautiful views, but is not known to visitors as a place to enjoy food and drink culture or explore downtown.  

Overall, respondents feel positively about Phoenix and all it has to offer. Impressions of Phoenix are even more positive after visitation.

When understanding associated characteristics of Phoenix, the area’s weather, climate, landscapes and other natural attributes were top rated. The Sonoran Desert landscape is perceived as beautiful, more than hot and dry. Some respondents mentioned the mountains, the sunset, and the diverse plants and wildlife.

Visit Milwaukee Unveils New Brand, Logo

With all eyes on Milwaukee in 2024, and as the community is about to experience a landmark summer for tourism, Visit Milwaukee is thrilled to announce its new corporate brand, which updates the look, feel and tone of its corporate logo, advertising campaigns, website, messaging and more. This marks the first new corporate brand for the company since the current brand and logo were introduced in 2005.

The final work being unveiled today was created with the input of thousands of Milwaukeeans from all areas of the community and is designed to be utilized by the community to create cohesive and inclusive positive branding to further elevate the destination’s reputation.  Working in tandem with Visit Milwaukee on this effort was the Milwaukee-based branding firm Ocupop, which created the logo, and P3 Development’s Genyne Edwards, who led the research and community input strategy over the last two years.  

“We couldn’t be more excited about the new Visit Milwaukee brand, which was made possible because of all of the thoughtful feedback and ideas that local leaders, businesses, frontline staff, and thousands of residents contributed to the research phase of this work,” says Visit Milwaukee President & CEO Peggy Williams-Smith. “We’re also tremendously grateful for the hard work of Ocupop and P3 Development, who took all of that feedback, plus our own, and worked with us to create something we’re incredibly proud of. I think this new look reflects the people who made it – and make tourism possible – in Milwaukee. All Milwaukeeans can find something within it and the messaging around it that reflects their experience here, and that was incredibly important to us. After all, it’s our residents and their welcoming nature that keep visitors coming back year after year.”  

Created based on the most popular feedback from the two years of research, surveys and interviews, the new brand and logo are anchored to the following messaging themes about Milwaukee: Fresh, flavor, and forward. These themes are not a slogan but are meant to guide Visit Milwaukee’s messaging and advertising efforts with the hope that some of their elements may be adopted by other organizations across the community. The new Visit Milwaukee logomark incorporates those themes, resulting in a bold design that features three M shapes.  

The new brand will be rolled out in all formats over the next 18 months, including but not limited to influencer campaigns, local event activations and sponsorships, a new television commercial, Visit Milwaukee’s first ever merchandise available for sale, and the company’s first ever physical visitor center, which will be housed within Baird Center. A more comprehensive list of ways the brand will be rolled out to both local and national audiences can be found below. Visit Milwaukee’s current "Milwaukee Fresh" and Burke Brise Soleil-based logos will be eventually phased out as the new look is incorporated across channels.

Logos and mottos for Pope’s visit to Asia released

The Holy See Press Office has released the official logos and mottos for the Pope’s upcoming visit to Asia.

The Pope’s journey to the continent – which will include stops in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore – is scheduled to take place on September 2-13, 2024.

First stop: Indonesia

Pope Francis will land in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 3, remaining until the 6 th .

The logo for this visit features the Pope with his hand raised in blessing, standing in front of a golden “ Garuda ”, a sacred eagle, which has been depicted in a manner reminiscent of traditional Indonesian “batik” fabric. 

Inlaid is a map of Indonesia, an archipelago characterized by a great variety of ethnic and social groups, languages, cultures and religious beliefs. 

The Apostolic Journey has been given the motto ‘Faith - Fraternity – Compassion’.

Papua New Guinea: “Teach us to pray”

Next, the Pope will travel to Papua New Guinea, where he will remain until September 9.

The centrepiece of the logo for this visit is a cross, depicted in colours meant to evoke Papua New Guinea’s sunrises and sunsets.

On the cross, a Bird of Paradise, symbolising Papua New Guinea, can be seen. 

The motto for this Apostolic Journey is “Pray”, inspired by the disciples’ request to Jesus: “Lord, teach us to pray” ( Lk 11:1).

Timor-Leste and the value of inculturation

From Papua New Guinea, Pope Francis will travel to Timor Leste, remaining until September 11.

In the centre of the logo for this journey, we see Pope Francis with his hand raised in blessing. Behind him is the globe, from which a map of Timor Leste emerges.

Above, written in an arc, is the motto of the papal visit, "May your faith be your culture”, an exhortation to the Timorese people to live out their faith according to their culture and traditions.

Singapore: Hope for the region’s Christians

The Pope’s final stop will be the island nation of Singapore, which he will visit on September 11-13.

The logo for this Apostolic Journey depicts a stylized cross, inspired by the star that guided the Magi, by the Eucharist and by the five stars of the flag of Singapore.  

On either side of the Cross is the motto of the Apostolic Journey: “Unity—Hope.”

“Unity” expresses communion and harmony among believers, both within the Church and in the context of society and family relations. 

“Hope,” meanwhile, suggests that the Apostolic Journey will be a beacon of hope for Christians in the region, especially for those who experience discrimination and persecution.

Mystics unveil new jersey sponsor as Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark come to D.C.

The team had been without a primary sponsor on the front of their jerseys since the end of the 2021 season.

The Washington Mystics will debut Robinhood as their new jersey sponsor when they host Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky at Capital One Arena on Thursday. The financial services platform’s logo will appear on the front of the Mystics’ jerseys, beneath the team’s name and each player’s number, for the remainder of the season.

The Mystics, who set a franchise record with their ninth straight loss to start the season Tuesday, have been without a primary sponsor on the front of their jerseys since Monumental Sports and Entertainment’s deal with Geico expired after the 2021 season. The team signed a two-year shoulder patch sponsorship deal with CarMax last season, and all WNBA teams feature the AT&T logo on the back of their jerseys as part of a leaguewide partnership announced in 2019.

The WNBA saw a 31 percent increase in sponsorship and media deals last season and is setting attendance and TV viewership records early in the 2024 campaign. In April, the Phoenix Mercury signed a jersey patch sponsorship deal with venture capital firm Cleveland Avenue worth a reported $3 million per year. A month earlier, the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces announced a multiyear, multimillion dollar deal with Ally Financial Inc.

Terms of the Mystics’ deal with Robinhood, which also includes signage at the team’s Entertainment and Sports Arena and a social media content series, were not disclosed.

“The increase in interest in the W is not just on the fan side, but also on the corporate side,” Alycen McAuley, the Mystics’ chief business officer, said in a video interview. “There’s been a lot of inbound interest in what’s happening in the WNBA. We’re always talking to a wide variety of companies about participating with the Mystics.”

McAuley liked the fact that Robinhood is a national brand with local roots, as its two co-founders, Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, both grew up in Virginia. The company, which gained popularity for its intuitive stock and cryptocurrency functions and faced scrutiny during and after the meme-stock frenzy of 2021 , also had an existing relationship with Monumental Sports & Entertainment. In October, it signed a three-year deal to be the Washington Wizards’ official brokerage and jersey patch sponsor.

“We’re excited to bring Robinhood’s mission to women’s sports through our first-ever WNBA partnership with the Washington Mystics,” Tenev said in a statement. “As a D.C.-area native and lifelong basketball fan, it’s an honor to connect with more D.C.-area fans as we build on the success of our partnership with Monumental.”

The Mystics’ showdown with the Sky on Thursday is the first of two games on consecutive nights the team relocated from its 4,200-seat home arena in D.C.'s Ward 8 to 20,000-seat Capital One Arena to accommodate the demand to see Reese and fellow rookie Caitlin Clark, whose Indiana Fever visit the District on Friday.

The Atlanta Dream and Aces also moved regular season games against the Fever to larger venues to capitalize on the interest in Clark, the No. 1 pick in this year’s WNBA draft. The Fever, who are off to a 2-9 start, have averaged a league-high 15,315 fans in six road games. The Mystics are the first team to relocate a game against the Sky, who selected Reese, a Baltimore native and former LSU star, with the seventh pick.

The Mystics are only selling tickets in the 100- and 200-levels at Capital One Arena for Thursday’s game against the Sky, but the available inventory is still more than double the capacity of Entertainment and Sports Arena, which the team has called home since 2019. The Mystics will host the Mercury at Capital One Arena on July 16 for their annual camp day.

“I think it makes a lot of sense for where we are, the rivalry we have with Chicago and Angel Reese’s profile here in this market,” McAuley said of the decision to relocate Thursday’s game to Chinatown. “Ticket sales for that game have been very strong.”

Despite the Mystics’ historically poor start, Washington has sold out all three of its home games at Entertainment and Sports Arena this season. That’s a credit, McAuley said, to the “extraordinary level of commitment” of the team’s fan base, including the season ticket holders who have supported the Mystics for all 27 years of their existence.

Last month, in an effort to attract new fans, the team announced a “Brunch and Basketball” series . The promotion features a pregame meal, including bottomless mimosas, at Sycamore & Oak, which is adjacent to the arena, and a ticket to the game. The team is considering extending the promotion to additional dates after the initial series of games sold out.

“It’s a great example of the fervor that’s out there and the support that we’re seeing,” McAuley said.

Trump's VP search accelerates

Donald Trump’s search for a running mate is intensifying, as the former president awaits sentencing on felony charges and prepares for next month’s Republican National Convention.

Vice presidential contenders recently received vetting materials, five sources familiar with the process told NBC News. 

Trump’s search, according to one source, is heavily concentrated on four top prospects: North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Tim Scott of South Carolina and JD Vance of Ohio. Another source described a three-way competition involving Burgum, Rubio and Vance.

It’s unclear, though, who all has been asked to provide vetting details that could rule them in or out. Burgum, who has been spending more time with Trump in recent weeks, is among those who have received a request, said one source familiar with the ask. Advisers to Burgum and other would-be running mates declined or did not respond to requests for comment this week.

Sources plugged into conversations about the search cautioned that Trump is working from a fluid shortlist that at times includes more than a half-dozen names. Additions, subtractions and the emergence of dark-horse candidates remain possible. 

Others who have been mentioned as prospective running mates include South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York and Byron Donalds of Florida and Ben Carson , who served as the Trump administration’s Housing and Urban Development secretary.

"Anyone claiming to know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying, unless the person is named Donald J. Trump," Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes said.

Trump and his advisers have kept a close hold on the search, which until recently had been relatively quiet , as Trump stood trial on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to an adult film actor. Trump has said in interviews that a decision on his running mate is not likely until closer to the convention, which opens July 15 in Milwaukee. In 2016, he announced then-Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate days before that year’s nominating convention in Cleveland.

Last month, NBC News reported that the Trump campaign had yet to move beyond initial deep dives on prospective running mates; at the time, no questionnaires that might have helped cull the field had been sent. That changed over the last week, as the case neared its finish, with a jury finding Trump guilty on all counts.

The trial became an unofficial audition stage for VP contenders. Both Burgum and Vance, as well as longer-shot prospects like Donalds, joined Trump at the courthouse and have defended him frequently on TV.

Asked Friday in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer if he was interested in running on a ticket with a “convicted felon,” Vance pushed back. 

“Well, Wolf, the entire purpose of this trial was to allow the media and the Democrats to say exactly that,” Vance said. “This was never about justice. This was about plastering ‘convicted felon’ all over the airwaves, when in reality the only thing Donald Trump is guilty of is being in the courtroom of a political sham trial.”

Burgum, who was with Trump at the courthouse the day of the verdict, quickly pivoted to flattery in an interview that night on Newsmax when asked if he was being vetted for vice president.

“There’s a lot of buzz around that,” Burgum replied. “I just say President Trump is so strong right now, he could get elected without a vice president.”

College Football Playoff Reveals Complete 2024-25 Playoff Schedule

Get your calendars out, college football fans. On Wednesday, the College Football Playoff released the complete schedule for the 2024-25 Playoff.

This year marks the inaugural season of a 12-team format. Previously, the College Football Playoff operated with a four-team field. After a 10-year run, it was decided that expansion was needed, creating more excitement for the upcoming season.

Opening round games will begin on Friday, Dec. 20. The season will then conclude a month later, with the National Championship Game scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20.

First round matchups will be played at on-campus sites. Quarterfinal and semifinal games will be hosted by New Year's Six bowl games. Here's the complete schedule for this year's College Football Playoff:
