LONDON’S ROCK ‘n’ ROLL LEGENDS TOURS

london rock and roll tour

THE LONDON ROCK TOUR

You’ve found London’s ORIGINAL and founding rock tour company (since 1986). Often copied, never bettered!!

London is the Capital City of Rock and Popular Music and you now have the opportunity of being part of it joining tours of musical discovery with us.  In no other city will you find so much rock heritage in such a concentrated area – its been a magnet for rockers from Liverpool to Los Angeles, Manchester to Melbourne, Stockholm to Sao Paulo, Dublin to Detroit and Trenchtown to Toronto.

From the 1950s to the current day, musicians, singers, producers, bands, lyricists and writers have come to London to seek, or expand their fame and fortune  And in doing so, they leave a rich and growing legacy to be discovered and enjoyed: the recording studios where classic records have been made; stars homes, apartments and, alas, death sites; instantly recognisable film and video locations , and cityscapes captured forever on classic album covers ; venues small and large; clubs and pubs; sites of famed drug busts; trashed hotels; management company offices; secret rehearsal sites; street names made famous through song lyrics ; and boutiques and flea-markets where global fashion trends have started.

Beatniks and Teddy Boys, Mods and Hippies, Punks and Rastas, Heavy Metal and Heart Throbs; this is a city of monumental rock landmarks where hardly a street is without a rock back-story!

LONDON ROCK TOUR WALKS:

LRT can create special walking tours just for YOU! These are half day private walks per area and can be band or genre focused. Below are suggestions, combine them using public transport to create a private full day option if you wish. Your private tour is customised to best suit your wishes. To make a reservation/check guide availability, please send your request with travel dates to:   [email protected]

Why travel with a copycat, when you can go with the ORIGINAL London Rock Tour!

Soho & Covent Garden   – Explore the heart of the Entertainment District. Fashion and tunes! Here were the beatnik coffee houses, skiffle and jazz clubs of the 1950s; here are the ‘basement and attic’ venues for 60s folkies, R&B-ers and bluesmen, 70s punks and prog and New Wave bands started; where hip hop first hit the UK, where the ‘2nd British Invasion’ 80s bands became the New Romantics and the Goths. This area has grown from plague pits to gin palaces to supper clubs to peep shows to posh boutiques. If we had a penny for every time a Londoner said, “I’ve walked by there so many times, but I never knew…” Join us and peel back a few layers of heritage, 1920s through 1980s!

Brixton  –  Good vibes abound in vibrant Brixton! Delve into the musical, social, and cultural heritage on this 2 hour walking tour. Explore the famed Brixton markets and Electric Avenue. See Bowie’s childhood home, locations of famed venues past and present such as Brixton Academy, Gunnell brothers’ Ram Jam Club, and The Frig. Explore the area’s vaudeville past, roots of the riots, celebrate the local Caribbean culture, see amazing murals and the latest street art.

Fitzrovia – writers & rockers! Before the 50s, artists and writers were the ‘rock stars.’ This area ‘north of Soho’ has them all. Virginia Woolf, Dylan Thomas and George Orwell were all locals, we can explore the historic pubs they frequented. This is where Coldplay and Keane were ‘born’ and the first place Bob Dylan performed in London. Here were jazz and skiffle clubs, amazing recording studios, home base for a time for Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett, Barry Miles of IT, and Boy George; where Donovan ‘scored’ on Sunny Goodge Street…

Kensington — Where Freddie Mercury & Queen ruled! This area is chock full of Queen locations. See where they lived, partied and played. Of course see the regal Royal Albert Hall. Also explore Roxy Music’s high street fashion boutiques, the ‘working class Carnaby,’ history of Biba, some famed Stones locations, punk venues…

Chelsea — heart of the swingin’ 60s, here is hippie central and heart of Rolling Stones along the scenic river. Also follow the Punk London trail. Your private walk can be either theme or a mix of both. Along the way, glimpse the heritage of royals, writers and artists who called this place home. See places for Beatles, Eric Clapton, Sex Pistols, Clash, Poly Styrene, early Pink Floyd, Marianne Faithfull, swingin’ fashion hubs, a legendary wedding location…

Notting Hill — this area basically has it all!  Thrust into the spotlight 20 some years ago with the iconic Julia Roberts/Hugh Grant film, but this West London neighbourhood has a deep cultural heritage. Hippies, punks, rastas…new wave and today’s chart toppers like Adele. Our route takes us via some very scenic housefronts, cheery garden squares and nearly hidden mews. Pay respects where Jimi Hendrix died. Explore places for Bob Marley, The Clash, Pink Floyd, T Rex, Chrissie Hynde, Tom Jones, Lemmy and more. There are classic recording studios, perhaps find Love, Actually …

Mayfair/Carnaby Street  — Beatles, hippies, punks, Blitz Kids & Bowie – includes swingin’ Carnaby Street. Such a variety in a relatively small area, the ‘hidden’ backstreets of the capital await!

Camden — Amy Winehouse made this area her playground, here was the stomping ground for hippie London, The Clash and the punk revolution, then Madness and U2 in the 80s, Oasis and their Brit Pop rivalries in the 90s….now where Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Janelle Monae and others choose to perform.

Belgravia — Sloane Square, Eaton Square, Belgrave Square – and their surrounding small streets and mews where, back in the 60s, was an ideological battleground of young musicians and fledgling ‘Hollywood-ites’ against the older ‘bowler hats’ of The Establishment. Mix in recent TV costume drama settings if you wish…

London is Calling!!

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Rock n Roll London Walking Tour

london rock and roll tour

Love Classic Rock?   Want to see the places that helped shape rock music? Come along and join our Rock n Roll London Walking Tour.  Many of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll legends of all time have lived, performed and died in London. As the beating heart of Britain’s music industry, musicians and singer-songwriters flocked to our capital to make their name. From Rock to Blues, Pop to Punk, some of the biggest names in music have left their mark on this city. So join us to remember some of the greatest moments in popular music as we explore Rock ‘n’ Roll landmarks at the historic heart of the British music industry in Soho.

Tour Highlights

  • See the home of British Rock and Roll
  • Hear about the auditions that were held in the old Bricklayers Arms pub for a new band … The Rolling Stones
  • Walk down London’s famous Tin Pan Alley
  • See real locations that feature in song lyrics
  • Visit Carnaby Street, home of the Swinging 60s
  • See where Bohemian Rhapsody and many other classic rock tracks were recorded

No Rock n Roll London Walking Tour would be complete without visiting Soho. This alternative and quirky corner of London has been home to the British entertainment industry for decades. Over the years it has hosted some of the most iconic recording studios, gig venues, pub hangouts, theatres, music instrument shops and more.

The tour will start off at Tin Pan Alley this street was once the hub of Britain’s music industry. Elton John, David Bowie, the Kinks, Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols and many, many more each have a story to tell about this street. For decades this was home, in some cases literally, to London’s music scene.

Naturally, the tour will take you to the venues where many Rock-Gods first cut their teeth and developed their sound. These clubs include the former Marquee Club, often dubbed the most important venue in the history of modern pop music. You’ll also pass by the world-famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, a Mecca for jazz musicians. The club’s founder, Ronnie Scott was awarded an OBE for ‘services to jazz’ and this buzzing venue is still the place to go to see rising stars in the music industry.

During the tour, you’ll find out that show business isn’t always glamorous. As Led Zeppelin found out at their first rehearsal in a hot, cramped basement rammed with amplifiers. You’ll also be shown where Mick Jagger and John Lennon spent some time behind bars.

Many locals will walk past unassuming little doors, hidden down alleys, and squeezed in between shops, unaware that some of the greatest records of all time were recorded in the studios within. Fortunately, your trusty guide will be sure to point them out to you.

“Soho has always encapsulated Rock ’n’ Roll so Carnaby Street was the perfect spot for our own store.” If Carnaby Street is good enough for the Rolling Stones, then it’s good enough for us to visit on our tour. From the Swinging 60s to the New Romantics, Carnaby Street has attracted the Carnabetian Army.

Throughout the Rock n Roll London Walking Tour, you’ll be entranced by anecdotes about some of the biggest names in music including the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, T-Rex, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, the Smiths, and more …

Rock and Roll London is operated by GREN TOURS Ltd.

Gren Tours Ltd. was established by highly rated Blue Badge Tourist guide, Glen Portch.  Have a look at his  listing on tripadvisor

About Glen Portch

Glen has seen almost every major rock act from the 1980s to the modern day  (and some that go back even further!). He has seen bands in London’s smallest venues to the largest festival in the UK.

He likes to think he can sing and play guitar  but he is better at guiding visitors around the places that made London the Rock and Roll centre of the Universe.

Rock and Roll  may not have been born in London, but many of world’s greatest artistes hail from London and the suburbs. The Who, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones are just a few of the many world class bands that contribute to London’s Rock & Roll heritage.

Some of the greatest music was recorded in London’s studios.  The EMI studios in Abbey Road, where almost all of the Beatles songs were recorded. Queen and Led Zeppelin recorded at Olympic Studios. Legendary venues, for example, The Marquee and the 100 Club were the springboard to success for many bands for such as The Police, David Bowie and Yes.

Rock and Roll London  offers private tours that chart the history of  British Rock and  Roll, from Jazz to Skiffle to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues to Rock and Roll. We’ll show you the studios and venues, as well as the present and former homes of some rock stars.

The tour can be half or full day.  The tour can be by private motor car or on foot/ public transport. Minibuses can be arranged for larger groups. Once you have browsed this site and you are interested in hiring Glen (or if not available, an alternative but equally enthusiastic, blue badge guide) or if you would like more information, then please contact us.

Walking Tours

A half day walking tour around the soho area covers many sites. the number of rock and roll  related locations are too numerous to mention here. for a more detailed itinerary, please contact us..

Locations include – The 2I’s coffee bar, the venue that launched the careers of Marty Wilde, Billy Fury and Cliff Richard. Denmark Street – London’s Tin Pan Alley with its music stores. Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, where  Jimi Hendrix spent his last night on earth. Trident Sound Studios  where classic Rock by Lou Reed and David Bowie was recorded. We can even re-enact the album cover of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Beatles sites  include the offices of MPL (Paul McCartney’s publishing company), and the site of the Indica Gallery where John met Yoko. We will also make the pilgrimage to EMI studios in Abbey Road where the Beatles recorded most of their music

To extend this to a full day , we can do the above and also head to Notting Hill where Pink Floyd performed many gigs in their early career, where The Clash used to hang out, the site of Virgin empire’s beginnings and where Jimi Hendrix died.

Tour by Car or Minibus

The number of rock and roll  related locations we can reach in a tour by car or minibus are too numerous to mention here. to discuss your options for a detailed itinerary, please contact us..

Half day tour by car  – includes sites in Soho such as The Marquee club where bands like Genesis, Yes and The Police performed early in their career. Away from Soho,  The Royal Albert Hall, venue for Cream’s farewell gig in 1968 (and reunion gig in 2008),  Notting Hill and, of course, Abbey Road.

Full day tour by car  – includes everything in the half day tour plus other sites which are a little further out of central London. For example, former homes of the Rolling Stones, present homes of some rock stars, and Beatles’ movies locations.

Man standing outside a red telephone box

Blue Badge Guide and music fan Glen Portch traces the history of British rock and roll in the capital.

In March 1980, Glen Portch set off from his family home in the hinterlands of suburban south-east London. The 14- year-old headed west to the Hammersmith Apollo, handed over £3 and sat down to see his first concert: the band Genesis. Not the typical soundtrack to a teenage music rebellion. “My mates were pogoing to the Sex Pistols, while I was listening to rock music,” says Glen. “It was the last throes of punk and the early days of bouffant-haired New Romantics, but for me, it was all about Pink Floyd, AC/DC and, of course, Genesis. I bought a guitar and taught myself to play their songs.

“With my first job I spent a chunk of my salary on tickets to the Marquee Club. In true rock and roll tradition, I don’t remember many of those gigs, but the best concert was Queen at Wembley in 1986. 70,000 people all singing along with Freddie Mercury – the ultimate rock concert.

“I had my own band Ugley, with an ‘e’. We’d fit rehearsals around babysitting and managed a few gigs, covering songs by the Kinks and Elvis Costello, but our tour de force was a rocked-up version of Play That Funky Music White Boy. There’s a cassette demo recording of our songs lurking somewhere.

“Struggling with the tedium of a local government job, I saw an advert for TEFL teachers in Japan, handed in my notice and headed to Tokyo. Two years later I was back in London to try my Japanese language skills in tourism. In 2004, as a freshly minted Blue Badge Guide, I started a London rock and roll tour.

A fan of rock & roll with a love of the music and of London

I'm just a kid from the east side of Detroit that spent my formative years with a turntable and big clunky headphones in my bedroom.  In the late 70's, when I was way too young to know anything,  I discovered British rock.  My life was forever changed.  I've created this blog to share my love of rock and roll and of London...both of which are my happy places.  I hope you enjoy it, that you share it and that it brings that music to life for you.  I don't claim to know anything other than where these places are, the things I've read and heard about them, that I've been lucky enough to visit them and that I share those things with you here.

I'm just a fan...just like you.

Deep Purple announces 2024 tour with Yes. Get tickets today

In 1972, Deep Purple released the iconic “Smoke On The Water.”

Now, 52 years (!) later, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will celebrate their mega hit on their ‘1 More Time Tour’ with fellow Rock Hall inductees Yes all summer long.

Along the way, Ian Gillan and co. are scheduled to make five New York and New Jersey stops.

First, the heavy hitmakers drop into Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on Friday, Aug. 30.

After that, the London natives swoop into Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on Aug. 31, Wantagh, NY’s Jones Beach Theater on Sept. 1 and Saratoga Springs, NY’s Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Sept. 4.

Deep Purple closes their NY run at Bethel’s Bethel Woods Center For The Arts on Sept. 6.

For fans that can’t wait to rock out to “Hush,” “Highway Star,” “Space Truckin'” — and of course “Smoke On The Water” — tickets for all North American concerts can be picked up as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 12, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all North American tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

The band closed the North American leg of their 2023 tour in Orlando on Feb. 21.

According to Set List FM , here’s what Deep Purple performed — including guitar, keyboard and bass solos — that evening:

01.) “Highway Star”

02.) “Pictures of Home”

03.) “No Need to Shout”

04.) “Nothing at All”

05.) “Guitar Solo”

06.) “Uncommon Man”

07.) “Lazy”

08.) “When a Blind Man Cries”

09.) “Anya”

10.) “Keyboard Solo”

11.) “Perfect Strangers”

12.) “Space Truckin'”

13.) “Smoke on the Water”

14.) “Hush” (Joe South cover)

15.) “Bass Solo”

16.) “Black Night”

Being together for 56 years doesn’t mean Deep Purple doesn’t have more to give to the world.

In 2022, the band reached deep into their archives and dug out “ Extras: The Infinite B Sides and Bonus Songs”  which is a must for any Purple superfan.

However, what we found most interesting was the band’s latest record of original music, 2021’s bluesy, New Orleans-y  “Turning To Crime.”

Featuring epic rock (“7 and 7 Is”) as well as lively party startin’ tunes (“Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu”) and covers from B.B. King (“Let the Good Times Roll”) and Cream (“White Room”), the album is certainly a departure from the hard rockers’ heavy fare they’re famous for.

Still, for our money, the best track on the record is the Southern-fried rock and roll number “Oh Well.”

We’ve been listening to it on repeat all day.

You can hear the jubilant  “Turning To Crime” album in its entirety here .

After over 50 years together — they formed in 1968 — the core of Deep Purple remains the same.

Should you attend a show, here’s who you’ll likely see take the stage:

Ian Gillan lead vocals, harmonica, percussion (1969–1973, 1984–1989, 1992–present)

Roger Glover bass, keyboards, occasional backing vocals (1969–1973, 1984–present)

Ian Paice drums (1968–1976, 1984–present)

Don Airey keyboards (2002–present)

Simon McBride guitars, backing vocals (2022–present)

This tour is a twofer.

Joining Deep Purple on the road are fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Yes.

The long-running prog band is known for their hits like “Owner of A Lonely Heart,” “Roundabout,” “I’ve Seen All Good People” and many, many more.

If you want to dive into their deep catalog, you can find all of Yes’ music here .

It’s hard to believe the ’60s were over 50 years ago now.

Still, many acts that defined the sound of the groundbreaking musical era are still kicking it and on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorite acts that have been rocking out since Nixon was in office that you can see live in the next few months.

•  Rolling Stones

•  Robert Plant with Allison Krauss

•  Bob Dylan with Willie Nelson

•  Ringo Starr

•  Graham Nash

Need even more classic rock in your life? We’ve got you covered. Check out our list of the  52 biggest classic rockers on tour in 2024 here to find out.
