Luxury Solo Travel: The Best Itineraries Designed for One

These companies absolutely excel in solo travel, and many have been doing so for decades.

By Samantha Coles

Man and car on ice

Solo travel is not a new concept — gap-year students and sabbatical-taking professionals spring to mind — but recent events have catapulted the individual journey, especially in the luxury sector, to new heights.

Following the onset of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, it made sense that an emerging trend of group travel came about once travel restrictions were lifted; multigenerational families and friend groups making up for lost time with a vacation together.

But, in the last 12 months, luxury solo travel has boomed — in 2022, Google Trends data indicated that solo travel searches had risen by an astronomical 761%.

The luxury travel industry is paying attention, with a whole host of exciting itineraries that are tailored specifically to the lone ranger. A number of cruise companies have also ditched the solo traveler fee, and even some yacht charters are available by the cabin with no additional fee if you travel alone.

Perhaps this trend was spurred by the realization that life really is too short to wait for the perfect time to go on that trip you’ve dreamt about. Or, maybe your travel companion is not keen on the location of your heart’s desire, and so you decide to go it alone instead.

Whether you’re seeking personal growth or simply enjoying the freedom and flexibility that comes with solo travel, it’s an enriching and unique experience — I’ve been lucky enough to visit a number of places (all in the name of research for Elite Traveler ), and I’ve gone alone — a weeklong detox in Switzerland , a getaway in Santorini , and a long weekend in Morocco .

While it felt daunting, especially as a woman traveling stag, I absolutely relished my time alone in a new place; it is liberating to explore, dine and experience exactly what you want, exactly when you want. The companies you’ll find here absolutely excel in this area, and many have been doing so for decades.

SevenTravel

A fairly fresh face in the world of luxury travel, SevenTravel was born out of the pandemic — which, all things considered, might seem like a strange time to launch. But this global pause in travel led to a re-think of just how we see travel — especially luxury travel.

SevenTravel aims to “redefine travel as we know it,” namely by traveling less often but better; reducing the environmental impact yet still acknowledging travel’s positive impacts (each trip has a built-in charity donation and the company has set itself a target to become carbon neutral by 2035); and by fostering a deeper connection with the destination through cultural experiences.

As of spring this year, SevenTravel has launched a series of trips called ‘Singlemoon’ in direct response to the notable leap in requests for solo itineraries from clients. SevenTravel’s founder, Angelee Rathor, explains: “In 2023, SevenTravel noticed a marked increase in solo travel requests, specifically and, perhaps most interestingly, from predominantly female clients in the over-45 age brackets.

“Solo travelers are seeking the chance to reconnect with themselves and aren’t held back by not having a travel partner. Whether this is through our holistic health trip in Thailand, our Moroccan yoga retreat or our cleansing spa break in Indonesia , SevenTravel’s host of wellness experiences promise realignment of body, mind and soul, and opportunity to disconnect from the business of everyday life back home.”

The one to book

The Me, Myself and Iceland itinerary dives into this mystical land, visiting all the well-known haunts and more. Highlights include a guided tour of Reykjavik , a visit to the Kolaportid flea market and experiencing the city’s cafe culture; visiting the famed Golden Circle to see the Thingvellir National Park and the steaming Geysir, spluttering Strokkur and gushing Gulfoss; exploring the Hvalfjörður fjord and wine tasting under the Northern Lights; glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull and its ice caves; and a day of relaxation at the Blue Lagoon.

It is a sad reality that not all places are safe to visit — especially if you are LGBTQ+. Scott Dunn is an award-winning luxury tour operator that has been running since 1986, beginning as a luxury ski company operating chalets in the Alps.

Over the last 30-some years, Scott Dunn has evolved with the changing landscape of luxury travel and now offers a seriously comprehensive selection from art-focused itineraries to culinary discoveries and, of course, luxury ski holidays.

Valletta

Scott Dunn also offers hand-selected LGBTQ+-friendly options to ensure travelers feel safe and comfortable. The accommodations are a result of a partnership with OutThere magazine — the two joined forces to ensure that the destinations are a good fit for the community. The partnership also saw OutThere host cultural sensitivity and unconscious bias workshops for all Scott Dunn offices over the world.

“We want to ensure that no matter who you are or who you love, if you’re ready to start planning the trip of a lifetime, you feel in safe hands — particularly when traveling solo,” says Sonia Davies, CEO of Scott Dunn.

[See also: The Great Edventure: The Best Educational Charter Yachts]

“Our expert travel consultants craft bespoke journeys that are as unique as each individual guest and are always on hand to advise should guests have any questions about a particular destination. We’ve partnered with OutThere magazine to provide an up-to-date list of the best and most memorable destinations that are LGBTQ+- friendly.

“These include Sydney, with its vibrant LGBTQ+ scene; Malta, which will be hosting EuroPride 2023 celebrations in Valletta this September; and Vancouver, located in one of the most liberal and progressive nations of North America.”

Wied il-Mielaħ

Scott Dunn’s Limitless Malta is a four-night private tour that takes a deep dive into the historical nation. Your base camp for the trip is Iniala Harbour House, an elegant harborside townhouse that dates back to the 1600s.

While the trip can be entirely customized, you can expect to uncover the rich history of Valletta with a private tour of the Upper Fort St Angelo and St John’s Co-Cathedral, make Pastizzi with a farmer’s lunch, enjoy wine tasting at Ta’Betta winery, and explore natural delights at Gozo island such as the Wied il-Mielaħ, a huge limestone arch that spans the sea.

Prior to the trip, you’ll have a travel consultant who will take care of arrangements, and during the trip you’ll have your own private guide — plus 24/7 support from Scott Dunn throughout.

Abercrombie & Kent

In 1958, Geoffrey Kent, who was a teenager at the time, drove his motorbike from Nairobi to Cape Town . During the journey, he experienced his first-ever hotel stay — and chose one of the grandest hotels in Africa for the occasion. This marriage of adventure and luxury set the foundations for the travel company’s ethos.

Abercrombie & Kent, or A&K as it is commonly known, was founded in 1962 by Geoffrey and his parents, Colonel John and Valerie Kent. While home on leave from the British Army in Kenya, the Kents noticed a rise in the number of tourists to East Africa, and so decided to start their own travel company to host safaris around their beloved homeland.

Hot air balloon

A&K continued to blend adventure with extravagance — just like Geoffrey experienced on that early motorbike ride — and delivered the first luxurious tented camps in Africa.

Since its inception in the 1960s, A&K has gone on to set the gold standard for experiential travel, curating surprising adventures in all seven continents (and, in some itineraries, visiting all seven in one cosseted hit).

From small group tours to custom trips, private jet itineraries and cruises, the vacations provide an enveloping experience of the destination through cultural and wildlife encounters, fine dining and top-notch accommodations.

A&K also prides itself on sustainable tourism and works closely with local communities to promote conservation efforts and support local economies; its philanthropic programs allow travelers to give back to the communities they visit.

There is also a plethora of fascinating trips for solo travelers — an area that A&K has been passionate about since its early days. Often, the single supplement fee is heavily discounted or waived and, as A&K has 55 offices in 30 countries, there is always someone you can connect with should you need. There’s also an escorted tour option where you can explore with a group of up to 18 like-minded solo travelers.

private jet

Due to popular demand, A&K has brought back its Wildlife Safari: Around the World by Private Jet. The 25-day tour is taking place Feb 14-Mar 9, 2024 and traverses the globe aboard a Boeing 757 outfitted with 48 first-class, fully lie-flat seats.

“Many of our guests share my passion for safaris, which is why this particular private jet journey has become one of our most popular ever,” says Geoffrey Kent.

“The chance to circle the globe to explore the most fascinating wildlife destinations is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From encountering species endemic to countries not necessarily known for their wildlife, like Japan’s snow monkeys and the tiny Philippine tarsier, to a spectacular finale in the Masai Mara, home to the Big Five.”

Cultural excursions abound, too: In Tokyo , explore Tsukiji Fish Market with an expert guide, take a day trip to the seaside city of Kamakura, or relax at the world-class spa. In Uganda, join a member of the local Batwa tribe for a community walk in the village, or meet with teachers at a Nursing School supported by A&K Philanthropy.

Safaris are not just the realm of honeymooners and multigenerational families — in fact, the structured days and communal dining make them a strong choice for the solo traveler. Micato has long been considered the absolute crème de la crème of safari operators, collecting a seriously long list of awards.

Okavango Delta

Micato was founded in 1966 by born-and-raised Kenyans Felix and Jane Pinto, and the pair are still as involved with the company as they were when it first launched — you can dine with the duo at their farm near Nairobi National Park to hear about their fascinating lives (Felix was a highly regarded farmer and one of Kenya’s most respected businessmen; Jane was a former international ping-pong champion and has helped children in need with Mother Teresa) as well as gain invaluable insider info about Kenya and beyond.

Micato is still a family-run affair, too, as the couple’s children hold senior positions within the company. Interestingly, Micato doesn’t own or operate any of the lodges where its guests stay — this means that guests’ needs are prioritized, and the camps and lodges are frequently evaluated by Micato’s safari directors to ensure each one is up to scratch.

It also offers a number of things that you won’t find elsewhere, such as silver- or gold-level safari directors on every trip, a 24/7 concierge team, Wi-Fi pretty much everywhere (even on safari vehicles) and even custom-designed safari luggage — so you don’t really have to think of anything for yourself.

Also, the services of East Africa’s famous Flying Doctors are included in every safari as part of Micato’s comprehensive Passenger Protection Program, ensuring that medical treatment and emergency transportation are available to guests.

Lion

Micato has been coordinating solo travel safaris for the last 50 years and, as such, is acutely attuned to their needs. There are a number of options depending on your style — opt for one of the classic safaris that have set departure dates and guarantee that you’ll be mingling with a small group.

The Micato Grand Safari covers the savannahs of East Africa; Botswana’s Timeless Wilderness journeys through the country’s unique landscapes; and the Tanzania Spectacular heads to three of the planet’s richest animal kingdoms: the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and the Serengeti.

All of the safaris can also be arranged as a single departure if you don’t want to join a group, or you can choose a custom private itinerary and design your very own dream safari.

The best luxury solo travel ideas for 2023

Mark hodson picks some of the top options for solo adventurers in the coming year..

solo travel head

Words by Mark Hodson

Solo travel is booming, and it’s not just backpackers and lonely hearts driving the trend. Many more luxury travellers are choosing to travel alone, whether they are single, separated or in a relationship, and UK tour operators are responding with a tempting array of options.

According to ABTA, the Association of British Travel Agents, in 2017 around 20% of UK travellers went on holiday alone. Post-pandemic, that number has now risen to 30%.

This is partly explained by demographics, with 8.4 million one-person households at the latest count, but also because of changing attitudes: there’s no longer a stigma attached to joining a singles holiday. Travelling solo today is about empowerment, freedom and self-realisation.

So, what are the trips you should add to your to-do list? Mark Hodson, of 101 Singles Holidays , selects the best.

Luxury tours

peru solo travel

Abercrombie and Kent offers a choice of tailor-made individual itineraries and small-group tours designed for solo travellers. There’s a cycling tour of Vietnam, a whisky-and-golf holiday in Scotland and a two-week tour of Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Its team of expert advisors will piece together the trip that’s just right for you.

Cox and Kings has been organising luxury travel since 1758 but has only recently started to offer escorted tours exclusively for solos, with no single supplements. There are four trips: Exotic India, Treasures of Peru, Splendours of Sri Lanka and Panama and Costa Rica Experience. Smart choices – these are all bucket-list destinations, but not so easy to book independently if you want a seamless high-end experience. The company also offers solo places with no supplement on selected departures of its most popular group tours.

Frequently asked questions

What is solo travel.

Solo travel means exploring the world mostly by yourself. It does not mean you are constantly alone, you may well travel with others for large periods of time during your journey. You may meet up with friends or family along the way.  You may also make new friends and acquaintances on tours and excursions. However, a solo traveller is largely self-sufficient and independent, travelling at their own pace and leisure. This is one of the biggest draws of solo travel; it allows you to discover the world and re-discover yourself.

Where's best for solo female travellers?

Some places will be safer than others, and even safe countries require a level-headed approach to personal safety and travel. Canada and the USA, especially Hawaii, Dubai, China, Japan and Thailand are relatively easy places for solo female travel.

Is solo travel safe?

Solo travel is safe if you stay within your limitations. The constant question posed by many solo travellers is whether the risk you take is worth the reward you’ll get in return. Don’t get into something you can’t get out of. If you’re not sure, stick to well-worn routes. Remember, the farther you venture off the beaten path, the further from communication you will be. Fellow travellers you meet in cafes and bars are a good source of up-to-date information. Check both Foreign Office and local weather reports. Notify friends or family back home of your intentions and, most importantly, when you do roam, always trust your instincts. If it looks risky, then it probably is.

soufriere, st lucia jade mountain at anse chastenet resort, where each suite has a view of the pitons

Honeymoons may be for couples escaping à deux, but at Jade Mountain, those traveling stag can celebrate their independence on the resort’s singlemoon. Skipping town and heading straight to this Caribbean refuge is a respite for every sense, literally—each bungalow is technology-free. The 600-acre beachfront property boasts turquoise waters and green peaks, but beyond the outdoor eye candy, accommodations are the free-standing kind. Each open-walled sanctuary includes a sundeck, infinity pool, and spa tub. The experience is all-inclusive, and the chef will prepare your meal plan based on your preferences ahead of time. Spa packages, private yoga classes, life coaching, and lessons in scuba diving, and chocolate-making will help you forget the rest of the world for a while. Oh, and should you need anything at all, simply call for your butler who’ll arrive on command, day or night.

Acre Resort | San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

acre resort

Live in your own personal perch in this hideaway on high amid 25 acres of jungle greenery where accommodations are the treehouse kind. The walls may be thatched, but the décor is anything but rugged. With a plush king-size bed, chic décor, and terrace and outdoor shower, it feels more like a boutique hotel room. You can truly get away with just your thoughts here: There are no noisy neighbors, and each nest is accessible via a dense foliage-decked path. Sleep in or wake up with the birds: It’s your journey. And if you want to come down, venture to a morning yoga class in the mango orchard, enjoy a pina colada poolside, meander through the organic gardens or citrus groves, or visit the in-house farm animals. Feel like mixing and mingling? The farm-to-table restaurant offers a singles communal table. Be warned, you might not come home solo: Acre rescues and raises puppies on property, which are available for adoption.

The hotel can arrange bespoke experiences, such as a yoga class at a city icon or a private tour of off-the-beaten path attractions. Borrow a vintage car for a drive to one of Rome’s seven hills with a picnic basket prepped by the hotel’s rooftop restaurant Settimo (the views and the cacio e peppe are killer), or bike to the Appian Way and ancient Aqueduct. Or, you can always op on a Vespa for a Roman Holiday movie tour to see the most memorable locations from the film.

Single holiday over 40

If you’re single, not in your twenties (or even thirties) anymore, looking for a holiday that suits your tastes, goals, and position in life, can be a frustrating thing… But it doesn’t have to be. With a little guidance, you can find yourself on an adventure or getaway that ticks all the boxes, brings all the right features, and immerses you in what you really want for your holiday – whether it’s adventure, intellectual stimulation, cultural expansion, romance, peace, and quiet, or some combination of these.

Travel providers have realised the potential of this market – your market – and have developed some excellent packages and options which put the holiday of a lifetime right in front of you. And the best part is, you can take another holiday or a lifetime next year too!

Before you book your flights or dial-up your travel specialist, here are a few things to think about, a little guidance to get your imagination going, and help you begin to formulate what type of trip is right for you.

What to look for

What makes people happy on a holiday is going to vary from person to person, so the best way to ensure a great experience is to know what you want out of your time away, and make sure your chosen tour provides it.

Accommodation

Begin with accommodation.

When you’ve been out all day, travelling or sightseeing or having a good time with new friends, you’ll want to return to a haven. Your room should be the safest, most comfortable place on your trip. This foundation will help you to be rested, refreshed, and better able to enjoy all of the other aspects of the trip.

Look for a private room. You don’t want to share with a stranger. If you’re lucky, and you meet a friend or romantic interest and you want to spend every moment together, you can – but if you get stuck with a chalk-and-cheese roommate situation, you will struggle to have a good time on the holiday, and you’ll not get your money’s worth.

Best to have a private space and choose who comes into it.

As well as privacy, you’ll want to be sure of a degree of security and comfort. Most hotels on tours will be fine, as your travel specialist will have vetted them – likely stayed in them at some point – and will know what places are good at each destination.

Find a trusted travel provider or tour company (a few good options are provided below), and you can rest easy, knowing that the quality of your room will not be in question.

That said, don’t be too shy to ask for details. This will be your home for the duration of your stay, and you need to be assured of its comfort and suitability.

People can pay as much as they want for a holiday – there really is no top limit – but there comes a point when returns diminish, and you’re paying for things you don’t need and won’t use. The key is to decide what kind of experience you want and make that expectation clear to your travel specialist or tour operator.

For example, if you want to be pampered, have access to spas and fine dining, and the ability to retreat to a climate-controlled, elegant suite, then you will want to gravitate toward the more expensive tours.

If you are more of the rough-and-ready, salt-of-the-earth type, then you may be more comfortable with a lower-priced tour with fewer amenities… keep that money in your pocket for more experiences along the way maybe.

In either case, expect to pay from £500 for a guided walking tour, to several thousand for all-inclusive international holidays, like luxury safaris, cruises, or cultural excursions into exotic locales.

Most tour operators will list tours with a full description of the itinerary, but it is difficult to know the pace expected. A few of them rate tours as ‘intense’ or ‘relaxed,’ which is very helpful. In every case, your travel specialist or tour operator will be able to tell you, after a few questions usually, if a tour suits your particular style and ability.

Travel agents are better for advice than actual tour operators, as they don’t have as much incentive to sell you a particular tour, or to use a particular tour provider.

If you choose a type of tour that you think might challenge you, it’s always a good idea to prepare a little. Increase your exercise levels starting at least a month or two before the trip.  Make sure you are used to more daily activities than you might normally get. You’ll enjoy your holiday more if you have some energy left at the end of the day.

Whether you choose a solo-type tour or travel as part of a group, depends on what you’re looking for. Travelling as part of a singles group doesn’t mean that you’ll be surrounded by people trying to find the next Mr or Mrs. Right (although you might be). Singles tours, especially for more established individuals, are often attractive to people who want travel companions who are not limited by having to care for children, and who are free to act as individuals, without needing to divide attention between friends and a spouse or other partner.

Small groups can be beneficial, because you will get more direct attention from the guide, and they tend to be more flexible. Companionship, however, is more limited in these smaller groups. If you happen to meet a compatible friend or romantic partner in your small group, you’re in luck – but the smaller the group, the more chance there is that you don’t. More people, more chance of finding like-minded individuals to share experiences.

group our over 40's

What to expect from your singles holiday

You may be a seasoned traveller, or this may be your first (of many, we hope) great adventure. You may be a long-time single, or newly on your own – and you may be good with that, or a little nervous about your new status in life.

Whatever the case, it helps to know a little about what to expect from embarking on a singles holiday.

Things will be different…

The whole point of travel is to see something different from your home. This means that food will be different, customs will be different, and you won’t be the social expert you are when on your own turf.

The best way to handle these kinds of differences is to be open to different kinds of learning. Be willing to try new foods – and maybe to find a new favourite. Be open to advice from trusted guides and locals; this can both keep you safe and open up opportunities and wonderful experiences that you otherwise would miss. Showing respect for the local culture will improve the quality of your holiday by decreasing potential risks and increasing pleasant experiences.

…But people will be people

Some of your co-travellers will be chilled out, self-sufficient, and content. For some, the destination is the point of the trip, and fellow travellers are pleasant company, nothing more. Others will be on the hunt, seeking a new partner and some romance on the trip. Still others will be somewhere between these two places.

The thing to remember is that people are people, whether on holiday or at home, and you should expect every type of motivation and intention that you might encounter in your non-holiday life.

These are people who have stepped out of the mundane. They have invested in an adventure of sorts and done so (potentially) as part of a singles tour. In all likelihood, they are open to meeting someone new and special. At the very least, they will be ‘open to being open.’

That’s a good thing to know because it means that you get to just be a person too. Relax. Enjoy. Be you… and experience a new destination, new culture, and new people.

You are the architect of your experience

Your guide is there to make sure you are safe, that you get to your intended destinations with a minimal amount of trouble, and that you have a good time. As for potential romances and social behaviour, that is up to you.

The best way to approach it, even if you are seeking romance, is to focus on the holiday and destination, rather than on potential romance. If you catch a sparkle in someone’s eye, or they catch one in yours, things may take on a different feel – but by keeping your focus and imagination primarily on the destination and culture, you don’t risk missing out on a great holiday experience because you were constantly distracted by those around you.

Adventure holidays for over 40’s

Cox & kings.

Cox & Kings are a top-tier travel company that provides both group tours and specialised individual itineraries. They specialise in adventure destinations and luxury accommodation and care.

Along with the usual packages for families and couples, they have a collection of tours designed specifically for the solo traveller, whether on your own or joining a group of other individuals.

Just You , as the name implies, specialises in the solo traveller. This doesn’t mean you’re alone, though. These are escorted holidays for singles, affording all of the safety and guidance of a group, but with the freedom for alone time, independent exploration, or interaction with other like-minded travellers.

You’ll have your own twin or double room, time to meet and greet fellow travellers, and a wide choice of destinations and experiences, across the globe, to choose from.

Exodus is an adventure travel company with over 500 itineraries in over 90 countries, so there is a very good chance they will have the adventure holiday you’re looking for.

They offer holidays specifically designed for those in their 30s and 40s and rate them according to the intensity levels of the activity involved. Exodus doesn’t designate an of these as ‘singles’ trips, though, so you may be in a group of mixed singles and couples, or even families, so it is best to check first if this is to your liking or not.

Mercury Holidays offers a variety of package deals and escorted holidays, from river cruises to walking tours or train trips. Destinations range from UK gems to more exotic locations like Sri Lanka, Laos, Russia and Botswana.

They provide a range of holidays with no ‘single supplement’ (which means you don’t have to pay extra to go as a single). These tours aren’t exclusive to singles, but as they tend to sell out rather quickly, there is a good chance there will be others singles along on the tour.

Intrepid focuses on smaller groups, and on tapping into the local flair and culture with local guides and access to lesser-known local gems. They offer a worldwide range of tours and destinations too, so you’ll have a wealth of choices in front of you.

Intrepid doesn’t currently offer exclusive singles-themed trips, but if you’re a single who isn’t necessarily looking to connect with other singles on a holiday, that won’t put you off. And who knows, if you are open to meeting another like-minded traveller, they may have the same idea as you.

Tours are a great way to experience exotic locales and new cultures, and a singles tour is an excellent way to meet new people in an exciting environment. Knowing what you want out of it, and what to expect from each type of tour is important.

Most of all, focus on the holiday itself – the destination and experience – and if you happen to meet a new great friend or romantic interest along the way. Well, that’s just the icing on a very enjoyable cake.

The best solo travel destinations, according to a long-time solo traveller

Travelling alone can be one of life's most rewarding experiences, says Tracey Davies, editor of 101 Singles Holidays

the best solo travel destinations

Solo travel is having a real renaissance right now. According to American Express’ latest Global Travel Trends report , 69 per cent of travellers are planning to go it alone this year, with women in the post-45 age bracket leading the charge. There are many reasons women choose to travel on their own: separation from a partner, a sabbatical from work, seeking empowerment and freedom, or simply wanting to do things their own way for a change.

So, if you’re looking for a yoga retreat in Spain , want to explore the Golden Triangle in India , or even snuffle for truffles in the forests of Slovenia , there are a million and one solo holiday ideas to garner inspiration from. Here are some of my favourites…

best solo travel destinations, scottish highlands

History in Edinburgh , thronging nightlife in Glasgow, heather-strewn glens in the Highlands – Scotland is a brilliant place to explore, period. Solo adventures to be had in Scotland could include a walking holiday in Glencoe, monster-spotting in Loch Ness or island hopping around the Hebrides .

See the best of the Highlands on a four-day Good Housekeeping tour this July, which includes a ride on the world-famous Jacobite steam train from Fort William to Mallaig. The train passes the stunning slopes of Ben Nevis, numerous dazzling lochs and the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct (pictured), made famous by the Harry Potter film franchise.

Other highlights of this tour include a ride on the Falkirk Wheel boat lift and a cruise along the Firth of Clyde on the PS Waverley, the world's last ocean paddle steamer.

the best solo travel destinations

Spain hits the top spot as one of the easiest places to travel solo. It has Mediterranean beach resorts, buzzing cities abundant with cool bars and restaurants (like Granada, pictured), and small towns and picturesque villages that are perfect for pottering.

Add in a straightforward and reliable transport network, a plethora of solo accommodation options and friendly residents, it's easy to see why Spain is a great choice for a solo sojourn.

The Healthy Holiday Company offers numerous wellness trips throughout Spain. One of the best for solo travellers is Shanti Som, a small, boutique retreat in Andalusia. With just 15 rooms it offers an intimate experience plus has a yoga pavilion and gorgeous little spa that offers different treatments and therapies. FIND OUT MORE

best solo travel destinations

Italy is incredibly welcoming to the solo traveller. Have you read the book or seen the movie Eat, Pray, Love ? Our hero Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with the country’s great food, romantic language and utterly charming locals. Italy's also an easy country to get around in, thanks to its excellent transport network.

One of my favourite cities in Italy is Bologna (pictured). Known as La Grassa ('the fat one'), the northern city is a mecca for gastronomes . As well as feasting on hearty pasta dishes and locally-made wine, Good Housekeeping's six-day foodies tour (which begins and ends in Bologna) visits producers of Parma ham, balsamic vinegar and Parmesan, and includes an Italian cooking class in the neighbouring city of Modena.

best solo travel destinations

Considered one of the safest countries in the world, Norway is the perfect destination for solo travellers, especially those looking to embrace friluftsliv , the Norwegian concept of enjoying the great outdoors.

Like other Nordic countries, Norway is incredibly well organised, efficient and easy to traverse. It also has a fantastic, solo-friendly dining scene with a focus on home-grown, seasonal produce.

Norway is one of the best places on earth to witness the Northern Lights , so join Good Housekeeping on this fantastic 12-day Norway cruise with no single supplement.

Departing November 2024 , you'll sail on a Hurtigruten ship, stopping off at the UNESCO-listed port of Bergen, the Lofoten Islands and Tromsø. As you cross the Arctic Circle, the chances of spotting the aurora borealis are almost guaranteed.

best solo travel destinations

Famously welcoming, Slovenia is the perfect destination when travelling alone.

Bordering Hungary, Italy, Austria and Croatia , this small but mighty country is relatively straightforward to explore, thanks to its efficient transport system. The fact that there's also plenty to see and do – and that most people speak English – means it should be on any solo adventurer’s must-visit list.

This six-day guided Slovenia adventure , departing in October 2024, is a great introduction to Central and Southeastern Europe. The trip begins and ends in Ljubljana, Slovenia's cobblestoned capital, and includes tours of Triglav National Park, Lake Bled (pictured) and the UNESCO-listed Skocjan caves.

You’ll also enjoy wine tasting in the Vipava Valley and an afternoon learning about the art of truffle hunting.

best solo travel destinations

For the original Shirley Valentine experience, look no further than Greece and its beautiful islands. Greece is ideal for solo travellers, whether you want to hoover up the ancient history in Athens or hop around the islands, relaxing on beaches and dining Shirley-style in traditional tavernas.

With an abundance of sprawling beach resorts, white-washed fishing harbours and rugged mountain villages to pick from on the islands, the hardest part is choosing which one to visit.

If you're looking to explore your creative side, check out learning holidays company Skyros . Staying in a rustic eco-lodge, this week-long holiday on Skyros (pictured), in the southern Sporades, includes creative writing sessions, stand-up comedy workshops and relaxing yoga classes.

best solo travel destinations

As our closest continental neighbours, France is a good place to start when venturing abroad solo. It's easy to get around, dining alone is welcomed and the French are very accustomed to tourists.

Follow in the footsteps of Claude Monet on this four-day Good Housekeeping holiday taking in Paris and Giverny. Great for single travellers with a passion for art, the base for the trip (departing in July 2024) is the four-star Château de Montvillargenne in the heart of the Chantilly forest.

Excursions include a visit to Château de Chantilly and the market town of Senlis plus a guided tour of Monet's gardens in Giverny (pictured) led by gardening expert and writer Paula McWaters.

best solo travel destinations

Considered to be one of the most captivating landscapes on the planet, Iceland is a must for any adventurer, including those going it alone.

With incredibly welcoming locals, Iceland is known as the Land of Fire and Ice, and offers visitors the chance to bathe in hot springs, climb sheer glaciers or come face-to-face with feisty volcanoes. To see this vast landscape in style, it's well worth joining a group tour (ideal for solo travellers) or hiring a car.

Soak in the famous Blue Lagoon (pictured), see the Skógafoss waterfall and hike up the Sólheimajökull glacier on an exhilarating five-day tour of Iceland. Hosted by Regent Holidays , this is a great option for solo travellers aiming to tick off a range of Iceland activities.

best solo travel destinations

India was one of the first countries I ever travelled around alone (talk about throwing myself in at the deep end!) and while it was challenging in parts, it was also rewarding and transformative.

Whether you're looking to hike the Himalayas, 'find yourself' through yoga and meditation on a retreat or marvel at the Taj Mahal, India's unique culture and vibrancy is bucket list-worthy.

One of the easiest ways to explore India on your own is on an escorted tour. Solos Holidays itineraries are made specifically for the single traveller, and their Splendour's of Rajasthan tour explores the Golden Triangle of Jodhpur, Jaipur and Agra. Highlights include seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise (pictured) and visiting the Amber Fort in the Aravalli Hills.

best solo travel destinations

Gorgeous white beaches, rugged national parks and perhaps the prettiest medieval walled city in the world (hello, Dubrovnik ), Croatia is one of my favourite places in Europe to explore by myself.

Croatia is an easy country to get around, whether you want to go island hopping by ferry, catch a coach along the Adriatic Coast or hire a car to explore the country’s rugged interior.

If you want to see Croatia with a some like-minded folk, consider booking an escorted tour with Just You , a solo holidays specialist. Their Croatia and the Markarska Riviera trip focuses on the Dalmatian Coast and is bookended by stays in Zadar and Dubrovnik. It also includes a brilliant boat trip to Hvar and Brac (pictured), and a visit to Krka National Park.

25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 04/04/2024

A few years ago there were hardly any single travel groups that offered options for holidays for one – let alone companies who entirely focused on solo departures and looked at things like no single supplements etc and solo travel groups.

Thank goodness for the growth in singles travelling as now there is a good economic reason for companies to look at developing great offers for those looking for holidays for one.

There are now singles travel groups over 30s, single travel for over 50, singles travel getaways, luxury solo travel tours and singles travel getaways galore.

I will let you know which of these tour companies I have traveled with and which I haven’t – if you then go and do a tour on one of the ones I haven’t been on please do let me know what they are like – and I would love you to write a guest post if you’re up for it.

There are so many options for solo traveling today – here are some great trips for single travelers.

1. Group Tours for Solo Travellers

Explore is perhaps one of the best singles travel groups. It is also the company I have been a traveling single with the most so the best place to start! Explore has been running since 1981 so they have loads of experience with running tours.

Explore covers over 100 countries and has a maximum group size of 11 and there is no single supplement if you take a shared room. There is an option to have your own room but that does cost extra. They prioritize working with locals and do a great job finding expert guides.

Around 60% of people who go on Explore trips are traveling on their own and they break down solo vacations into age groups on their website which is really helpful.

My second recommendation for solo travel vacations is G Adventures . They have a wide range of small-group trips designed for the solo traveler. There is no single supplement as long as you are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex. G Adventures also offers single rooms at reasonable prices if that is your preference.

The itineraries for G Adventures trips tend to have more free time than some of the other tour companies in this article. This is great if you are someone that likes to have some time to yourself to relax or explore further but want the support and structure of an organised group trip.

One of the most difficult parts of solo travel can be dinner. Eating on your own can feel lonely and isolating. The tour leader organizes group meals most nights, so if you want company you will almost be able to find it.

If you are traveling alone one of the best ways not to feel like it is to join a group doing some challenge – when I summited Kilimanjaro on an organized solo tour. we were a team from almost the word go. More than half of the trip was traveling solo – some were single, some had partners who didn’t want to go, some like me had someone pull out last minute etc.

It didn’t matter who you had arrived with – what mattered was everyone wanted someone to talk to about whether or not to take Diamox, tips on altitude, share lollies, etc etc.

I have done two travel solo tours with friends – North India and cycling Southern Iceland . Again an activity-based trip can be a great travel for singles option – particularly as you tend to be exhausted every night and eat and sleep.

Want to join me on a small group female trip to Africa? I am heading to Kenya in October on an 8 night safari with Walking Wild Africa and would love you to join me. It’s a unique mix of game drives, walking safari and some chill time. Make sure you tell Kim that you want to go on the tour with The Boutique Adventurer so she gets the right one!

2. Solo Female Travelers Club

Solo Female Travelers Club is a community of more than 90,000, run by the fantastic travel bloggers Meg and Mar. The heart of the community is their Facebook group, which has some great information and is the perfect way to meet other females interested in traveling solo.

Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.

3. Luxury Single Traveller Vacations

One company I have been particularly keen to try but it just hasn’t worked out on timings and destinations is Flash Pack . I love the tone and feel of their website – it is very much about boutique adventures.

They focus on people in their 30s and 40s and seem to have some great travel groups for solo travelers.

woman poses in front of a temple in bhaktapur nepal

Australian based Travelling Divas also promises boutique hotels and customized trips. I have also been very keen to try Cox and Kings solo holidays .

Cox and Kings have a great reputation as a high-end travel specialist so I am highly confident that the thread count on their sheets will be up to my standards based on how fantastic their hotels look.

These trips though will, of course, be at a premium to some of the other options I have mentioned. But their group travel singles options look terrific.

4. Solo Travel Companies that are specifically for traveling alone

I would highly recommend that you think beyond the country you live in when it comes to solo travel groups. For example, quite a few travel companies based in Australia now run specific holidays for solo travel groups.

Encounter Travels is all about solo travel but not traveling alone as they say.

red sands with a path and shadow of person taking photo in namibia

They also age match so if you are a 35-year-old solo traveler you won’t be in a group of people in their 70s. They do have quite a few trips to various parts of Australia but also a few trips to other places around the world.

Another solo travel company based in Australia is Twos a Crowd . Some UK based companies that specialize in solo travel groups are:

5. Companies that specialise in Adventure

For a more adventurous bent check out    8th-day adventures . They are a London based club that has lots of sporting events and other fun things that are a mix of social and activity.

They also run some group holidays which could be good for the more adventurous solo traveler eg Everest base camp

An interesting-sounding organization is Archaeo Adventures. This female-focused travel company looks at adventures in countries like Morocco and Jordan in small groups. They are about boutique hotels, working with locals, and off-the-beaten-track experiences.

Female-focused hosted adventure trips are also the focus of Living Big which is US-based. Another company specializing in solo travel groups USA is Overseas Adventure Travel , which offers some fantastic-sounding trips for adventurous solo travelers.

Heading to Australia there are Adventurous Women and Another World Adventures.  Another World Adventures curates adventures from different providers. It is a very comprehensive site with loads of options that sound great.

6. Cruises for Solo Travelers

Even cruise ships have gotten on board with the growth in solo travel. Norwegian Cruise Line is the brand most commonly mentioned for having actually built single cabins and apparently there is a dedicated area for solo travelers.

They have several cruise brands – Norwegian Epic, Breakaway, Getaway, and Escape. But ensure you look closely as these can be more family-focused at certain times of the year – check out my top tip 2 below.

Encounter Travel also has loads of information on solo cruise options. They even have a “cabin mates wanted” section where you can potentially find another same-sex solo traveler with whom you can share a cabin.

7. Charity Based Solo Travel Companies

There are a few organisations that run group tours that have some activity/challenge that supports a charity. These can be a great way to find others to travel with and the shared sense of purpose can surely add to the group bond.

Have a look at Global Adventure Challenges and Charity Challenge.

8. Passion-based Solo Travel Tours

An organized trip around an activity you love that is also about solo travel is a fantastic formula to follow. Even if you don’t really bond with anyone on the trip if you have learned more about Italian cooking or photographing sea life it is a well-spent holiday.

Quite a few organizations I have listed above offer planned trips around passions and hobbies. Here are a few others I’ve found:

Frui has some fantastic looking passion-based trips – from photography (a great one for solo travel) to painting to food in some lovely locations. I did a day class with them once in London in photography and they were great.

The Red Sea in Egypt appears to be a very popular solo travel spot – most likely driven by the amount of activity that can be done in the water. There are also numerous diving and/or underwater photography courses in the area.

woman and small hut with tree in namibia

Skyros is a very famous spot in Greece for activity/passion-based trips. They used to have a bit of a self-help bent but now they are very focused on passions like painting, singing, yoga, and learning.

They have two locations in Greece and one on the Isle of Wight for taster weekends. According to their site, 70% of their travelers are between 40 and 60, and most travel solo. This is a great option if you’re looking for singles travel groups over 40.

9. Something Different for Single Travel Groups

In August 2017, I spent a month living life Unsettled in Medellin Colombia, and loved it. Unsettled is a fantastic concept. Essentially it aims to give people the experience of living in a city for a month rather than being a tourist.

It does this because it has about 25-30 people sign up, organizes apartments and coworking space and sets up activities that you can participate in as much or as little as you like.

The other people on the trip are your community, the hosts act as your connection to local life and having an apartment and workspace means it feels more like living.

They choose brilliant locations from Buenos Aires to Cape Town to Barcelona . I highly recommend checking them out.

If you decide to live life Unsettled then use the code “FRIENDSOFUNSETTLED”  and tell them that the Boutique Adventurer sent you for a discount of USD$150 .

Solo Travel Tips

1. mix up your plans.

A great way to travel solo is to mix things up. If you were heading to say Australia you could go and stay in a spa for a few days (a great way to meet people), head to say Sydney on your own and stay at a boutique hotel and use Tinder or join a meetup group.

You could then join an organized tour with someone like Explore, travel with them for a while, and then have some time solo again. Committing to a lengthy organized tour can be a bit much – plus it is hard to find one that covers everything that you want.

I find a mix is optimal – if you feel lonely it is only a few days till you have company, if you’re dying to be on your own again it’s only a few days till that happens. And you may very well meet others traveling alone on your organized section who are keen to have further adventures after the tour.

I have many friends I have met when traveling solo who become travel buddies and loads of other friends of mine are the same.

2. Avoid School Holidays

September is a great time to travel solo. Be careful of all organized tours/cruises etc during any school holiday time, particularly over the summer, as you may end up surrounded by families.

However, school has returned in September, and there are often many deals for solo travelers.

3. Fill Up your Kindle

There is nothing like a good book to keep you company when traveling solo! I keep adding to my list – please email me with more suggestions! [email protected] .

I keep them all in my Amazon shop. And I have just launched a range of e-books aimed at solo travelers! I have an ebook on Solo Travel, my trip to Colombia with Unsettled and Everest Base Camp .

Frequently Asked Questions about Solo Travel

Are there travel companies just for single people.

Flash Pack group adventures - flashpack.com

Yes! There are several travel companies just for single people as well as companies like G Adventures that offer trips designed for single travelers.

What is the best holiday destination for singles?

korea_daegu_yellow-bicycle

In my opinion, rather than focusing on a particular destination singles should look at holidays with a focus or goal like a cycling trip or a trek. This is most likely to bring together like-minded people and provide a common purpose.

Is solo travel lonely?

woman on train platform with suitcase

It can be. The best way to avoid feeling lonely when traveling solo is to join an organised tour. Or if you are on your own look at staying in high-end hostels for some comfort and the chance to meet others. And a good book can transport you from any difficult situation! And don’t forget to check out things like the safest cities in the US to make sure you can relax during your trip.

How do I meet other female solo travelers?

COMO Shambhala Estate bali - woman in yoga post with support

There are several facebook groups for female solo travelers such as Solo Female Travelers (who also organise group trips for solo female travelers). I have also found that going to a spa/yoga retreat can be a good way to meet other female solo travelers.

I paid for everything associated with this post. This was completely me travelling and not working with any tourism boards or hotels or tour groups. Much of what is in this post is stuff I learned before I started my blog – and probably a lot of what led me to start a travel blog.

Great ideas. I have done a lot of solo tour travel as I like the security of a tour when I am on my own. Some other companies:

Contiki is great for the 18-35s, especially when you haven't travelled much before.

My favourite company is G Adventures, no single supplement, but you can pay for your own room and a huge range of tours world wide. They are Canadian based. All ages, very budget and affordable.

Another one very similar to G Adventures but Australian based is Intrepid tours. World wide, budget, no single supplement but also has own room option if you don't want to share.

I have made life long friends on these tours when I was travelling solo. Now we meet up all over the world and do tours together!

Your first solo holiday

Woman on a solo holiday in Lindos, Greece

It can be difficult to know what to expect when you set off on any holiday, and if you’re a  first-timer on one of our solo holidays,  that’s especially true.

So, below you will find just a few of the many reasons why solo traveller holidays with the award-winning travel service Friendship Travel can offer you an amazing, stress-free experience:

  • You will be travelling with plenty of like-minded people to share your experience and memories with, whether you are hoping to enjoy one of our  cruises ,  walking holidays , city breaks,  ski holidays , or any other kind of getaway.
  • Your Friendship Travel host/tour manager will make you feel completely at ease on your first singles holiday, introducing you to your fellow solo travellers and being your point of contact if you need any travel advice or have any concerns.
  • We have tried and tested all of our hotels and resorts for your peace of mind.
  • The people you share your time with on our group holidays for solo travellers are just as keen as you are to meet others and experience new places.
  • Be your own tour guide! Choose what you do and who with, ensuring your holiday is entirely hassle-free. If you would prefer to spend some free time alone relaxing, that’s not a problem. Or if you want to enjoy a small group tour or shore excursions with others, that’s fine too.
  • As a solos holidays specialist, we only offer package holidays which do not include the single supplement that single people are often charged when booking places on family or couple-oriented breaks. Our guide to luxury solo travel

Plan your experience

Find yourself, by yourself. Anywhere in the world.

Sometimes, you just need to get away from it all. To strike out on your own and forge your own path. And there’s no better way to do it than through luxury solo travel. When you step out of your comfort zone, you can discover new ways of thinking and living. Discovering unfamiliar cultures and distant lands at your own pace and on your terms.

However, the luxury solo trips you can browse below are far from lonely or awkward. No, these are spellbinding, highly-curated journeys designed specifically with the luxury solo traveler in mind. Unconstrained, joyous, and free. We’ve worked closely with our travel experts and local contacts to refine experiences that perfectly match the needs and desires of those embarking on solo travel. They’re not ‘normal’ trips for one. They are not part of a group tour (we do not offer group tours). Instead, they’ve been designed from a singular point of view. Yours.

Frequently asked questions about luxury solo travel

What are the benefits of travelling alone.

You’ll travel on your own terms – and at your own place. There’s time for silent reflection and time to test your mettle. Take a slow boat through the waters of Halong Bay, propped up with a book. Ride a horse along the black beaches of southern Iceland. Take in the frescoes and ruins of Akrotiri, blinking in the sun, putting your bag down to sip a beer in a taverna, alone. You can write your notes. You can call the shots. You can truly immerse yourself in another world while calling all the shots. Often, it’s great to travel with a companion (or a few). But sometimes it’s important to take stock and to learn more about yourself. That’s what solo travel can do.

How should I pick where to travel solo?

The whole world is your oyster. It doesn’t have to be exotic and far flung. You could explore the eateries of Spanish Basque Country. Study the ruins of ancient Rome. And drink and eat your way through the bars of Buenos Aires. But you could also set off to learn about the plant life of the Peruvian uplands. Explore nature in the Galapagos Islands. Or wander amongst the monasteries of the Georgian mountains. Luxury solo travel is a great way to learn new skills and to practice those that have gathered dust. Wine-tasting. Cooking. Yoga. Writing. Everything’s up for grabs.

How much is one of your typical solo trips?

Our solo trips are completely tailor-made, and private (we do not offer group tours). As a result, the cost of a solo trip can vary hugely depending on location, duration and the type of experiences involved. From exploring a city to a far-flung adventure, the possibilities are vast. Due to the nature of our bespoke, luxury experiences, we would expect a minimum cost to be in the region of $8,000 (£7,000) for a week-long trip.

How can solo travellers stay safe?

When you come with us on a luxury solo trip, you’ll have access to our partners on the ground, local guides, and our 24/7 hour support line. There will always be somebody on hand to help and assist, including providing pre-travel safety briefs. Many solo travelers ultimately chose to travel with a guide (or several), so you don’t always have to be entirely on you own.

What factors are important when choosing a solo travel destination?

Some destinations seem better designed for twos or groups. The romance of the Maldives might offer less to a solo adventurer. Think about your objectives and needs. Do you want to go slow, or to take part in lots of high-octane activities (like surfing, sailing, and biking)? Do you want to get really, really far from it all? If so, then consider places that are naturally suited to longer journeys. You could take in the cities of western Europe. Or you could make your way through the jungles of Costa Rica.

What tips do you have for travelling solo?

Plenty. Think about the ways you might want to document your trip. A notebook, a pen, a camera. There’ll be plenty of time to record your thoughts, experiences, and environment. Talk to the locals. Spend time hanging around. Embrace the freedom of getting a bit lost. Ask for directions, ask for help. You can be entirely spontaneous, as well. This is often much harder when you’re part of a bigger group. Happily, we’re experts at planning trips with lots of cushion room and space to make spontaneous decisions and choices. And we’re only ever a call away if you want to change your wider plans mid-trip.

Do you offer group tours?

No. Our solo trips are exactly that – solo. After a detailed consultation with one of our Travel Experts, we will customize you a trip that is unique to you. We do not offer group tours.

Different trips for different travelers

We find there are usually two types of solo travelers. Those who want to immerse themselves in a culture and explore a country, and those who want to do the very opposite, and detach themselves from almost everything and explore the wilds of the world. With that in mind, we’ve broken these types of experience into two categories, below.

A – Z of destinations

Into the wilderness

Just you – and the great outdoors.

Like Ernest Hemingway or Rebecca West before you, nothing is as enriching or rewarding than exploring the vast landscapes of our planetary wilderness. Cities and highways. Airports and shopping malls. These things are big and loud, but much of our world is quiet as the night – and demands to be explored.

For those in the know, there’s our ultimate ‘go it alone’ experience: Get Lost . We’ll lose you in the wilderness, and we’ll help you find your way home.

Start planning

Examples of our solo wilderness escapes

Solo journeys into the great outdoors.

Wilderness

The concept is simple. With Get Lost, we’ll drop you off in the middle of a beautiful ‘nowhere’, and then we’ll help you find your way back home. From the sands of Morocco to the Mongolian steppe. You’ll disconnect, re-engage, and push yourself. It’s a trial, a test of character. And it’s like no other travel service on earth.

Morocco

Marrakech, Agafay & Essaouira: from the Medina to the coast

Dive into the souks of Marrakech’s medina, barter hard for a bargain and afterwards de-stress in a traditional hammam. Hike to an indigenous Berber village, camp in a chic tented camp and learn to kitesurf on the stiff Atlantic breeze. This is Morocco.

Luxury holidays in Iceland

Iceland: from land to sea

A hand-selected sampling of the very best that Iceland has to offer fit perfectly into a week-long itinerary, this trip will give you the sense of pure fulfilment that comes from truly experiencing it all. Glacier, geysers, waterfalls, volcanoes and waterfalls; it’s got it all.

Where to go on holiday in January: Chile

Santiago, the lakes & Patagonia: an intrepid hiking and biking adventure

This 13-day hiking and biking adventure around enchanting Chile is the perfect opportunity to explore and discover the true beauty that lies within this South American jewel. There’s much more than meets the eye.

Antelope Canyon, Utah

Utah: a luxury adventure in the American Southwest

For us, nowhere screams ‘adventure’ quite like the American Southwest. Crammed full of otherworldly landscapes, plunging canyons and star-filled skies. And we’ll spread it all out before your eyes.

How we created the trip of a lifetime

Earlier this year, Chloe—a Black Tomato client—became the first traveler to return to Mongolia after Coronavirus. And she traveled solo. This is her story.

Mongolia

Chloe’s solo adventure across the Mongolian steppe

Earlier this year, Chloe contacted our travel experts; requesting a three-week solo trip across Mongolia. Only 48 hours later, she was on the ground.

“What they managed to create for me within that timeframe”, she said, “was the trip of a lifetime”.

Her travel expert, Rob, worked with Chloe over those hours to curate something entirely different and entirely hers. She would help nomadic families prepare for their winter migration. She would learn the art of hunting with eagle riders. And she would cross mountain and steppe on horseback.

Explore Mongolia

Mongolia

Reflections, emotions, memories — in Chloe’s words

“I’m about to depart on the plane that will take me away from Mongolia after the most unforgettable three weeks.

“I have so many emotions leaving this place. The people are as hard as the environment that they live in, but their hearts are just so warm. I was inspired by everybody I met, especially by the way that they openly appreciated and looked after one another. I’ve got a lot to digest.”

Mongolia

Solo travel isn’t lonely travel

Working closely with our local partners and experts on the ground, we were able to access people and experiences that you simply can’t plan for yourself. We have worked in Mongolia for years, and it is this local knowledge that helped us to make Chloe’s trip so very full of life.

“Riding camels across deserts, motor biking and horse riding over mountains, speaking with monks and shamans, chasing wolves and wild horses”

Throughout, Chloe had the support and welcome of the local families and our expert guides. In the very heart of a thriving community in one of the most beautiful places on earth, she traveled solo – but was not alone.

An example trip

Don’t just take it from us – here’s what some of our other solo travelers had to say

Responsive and reassuring.

This was the second time I had the opportunity to travel with Black Tomato and I can say without hesitation that I will be doing it again as soon as I have the chance. From the moment I made the initial phone call through to just before departing, they were professional, responsive, and reassuring,

The trip of a lifetime

Working with James at Black Tomato was truly one of the best experiences. He made sure I had a the trip of a lifetime in India and especially since I was traveling  alone , it was so comforting to know I could contact him anytime.

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2024 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Adventure Travels

With trips on every continent, Exodus Adventure Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten-path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Adventure Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 8-16 people and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Adventure Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Aventure Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Adventure Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.
