Nys state maple weekends are back - how sweet it is.

NYS Maple Weekends are back on tap this year March 19-20 and 26-27, 2022, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Pancake breakfasts, tastings, tours, cooking demonstrations, and opportunities to learn how tree sap is made into syrup are all part of the family-friendly fun that makes up our Maple Weekends.  Experience the long-standing traditions of maple syrup making, celebrate New York’s first agricultural harvest of the season, meet the producers who make New York the second largest maple producing state in the US and witness sustainable agriculture at its best!

Follow the delicious smell of maple sap cooking down to syrup in the sugar shacks and get ready to taste pure and natural maple syrup, candy, cream and other products right on the farm.  It doesn’t get much sweeter than this!

Where to get your maple fix this year:

Cumming Nature Center, Naples

Hit the Maple Trail at the Cumming Nature Center and learn about the timeless craft of maple syrup making featuring hands-on activities that explore maple syrup production from Native American and pioneer “sugaring” to modern day technology.  $4 special event fee added to Nature Center admission cost.

Cumming Nature Center Maple

Everson’s Pure Maple Products, Clifton Springs

With over 50 years of production and sales, this traditional, family-owned and operated sugaring business invites you to help them celebrate their 50th Anniversary on March 26 and 27 with pancake breakfasts, “Maple Flights,” demonstrations, sugar house and sugar bush tours, a maple bake off, arts and crafts for the kids, hayrides, and games.  Stop in their Maple Shop for a free maple cupcake on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and stock up on pure maple syrup, sugar, cream and fluff for at-home enjoyment.

Kettle Ridge Farm, Victor

With its steep wooded slopes, high ridges, and surrounding kettle-hole ponds, Kettle Ridge Farm offers a tranquil refuge and is well known for their adopt-a-maple program, igloos@night evenings, pancake breakfasts and micro-winery, along with their pure maple syrup and honey.   The Farm will be open 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. during Maple Weekends and will offer pancakes (with maple syrup, of course),  egg “sammies,” maple sugar doughnuts and other maple infused goodies.  Their store will be stocked with plenty of maple and honey products including coffee-infused and barrel-aged maple syrups, maple sugar, and wildflower honey varieties.  75-minute igloo rentals for $100 (maximum 6 people per igloo), plus free sugar house and sugar bush tours are offered. No pre-ordering or reservations necessary this year, just first come-first serve!

Kettle Ridge Farms Maple Syrup

Schoff’s Sugar Shack, Victor

This small, family run business produces between 200 and 300 gallons of syrup per year and sells maple syrup and maple candy from their Victor home.  During Maple Weekends they are open 10-4 each day and offer sugar house tours and demonstrations, corn hole, trivia and other games, tastings and a maple s’mores station! The tour and demonstrations are free with maple syrup, cream and candy available for purchase.

Schoff's Sugar Shack

Stoney Ridge Farm, Farmington

This family operated, 77-acre farm has grown from 400 to over 6500 taps, and features sugar house tours with samples and tastings, hands-on activities for the kids, petting zoo, monster truck and tractor displays, all free to the public on Maple Weekends.  Their all-you-can-eat buttermilk and buckwheat pancake breakfasts served from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day include maple sausage and Stoney Ridge’s own pure maple syrup for a very reasonable $12 for adults and $7 for kids under 12.  Be sure to stop by their retail store for maple syrup, maple cream spread, maple mustard, and other maple goodies!

Stoney Ridge Farms Maple Syrup display for retail

Syrup A’ La Rue, Clifton Springs

Part of ACMME Farms, Syrup A’ La Rue offers a variety of maple-infused syrups, maple candy, and maple cream.  They also have an adopt-a-tree program where you can choose and tap your own tree out on the farm.  Maple Weekends activities include farm tours, tastings, scavenger hunts, and many other family-friendly activities! Uncle Dan’s Gourmet Mustards, Terry’s Tips and Beef BBQ, The Fairville Baker, and Wilkins Cakery are just a few of the wonderful vendors that will be there to celebrate Maple Weekends 2022.

Know before you go:

•      Dress in layers and comfortable, waterproof boots.  It can be a bit muddy on the farms this time of year.

•      Tours and samples are usually free, but pancake breakfasts incur a reasonable per-plate cost.

•      Maple Weekends pretty much happen regardless of the weather.  Our maple syrup producers are hearty folks!

Common dishes

As with most Asian countries, the staple food in the Philippines is rice. It is most often steamed and served during meals.

Leftover rice is often fried with garlic to make sinangag, which is usually served at breakfast together with a fried egg and cured meat or sausages.

More details at Common dishes

Main Dishes Philippine Cuisine

Adobo is one of the most popular Filipino dishes and is considered unofficially by many as the national dish. It usually consists of pork or chicken, sometimes both, stewed or braised in a sauce usually made from vinegar, cooking oil, garlic, bay leaf, peppercorns, and soy sauce. It can also be prepared "dry" by cooking out the liquid and concentrating the flavor. Bistek, also known as "Filipino beef steak," consists of thinly sliced beef marinated in soy sauce and calamansi and then fried in a skillet that is typically served with onions.

Frequently Asked questions

Need a little assistance? We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions that may be helpful before booking your tour, requirements for leaving and returning to Canada, Travel Insurance and more.

What happens if I become ill or injured while on tour?

Should you become ill, injured or need medical attention, call 911 or present to the nearest hospital or medical center. Should this occur while the tour is underway, the group will continue on as planned with the Tour Director. In conjunction with your travel insurance provider, you will be responsible to make your own arrangements for your return travel home.

For this reason we strongly recommend Emergency Medical and Cancellation & Interruption Insurance. Maple Leaf Tours can provide you with a no-obligation quote. Should you decline insurance coverage with Maple Leaf Tours we will require a completed travel insurance waiver that states you have your own insurance or that you do not require any additional coverage.

This waiver is attached to your confirmation email.

What are my options for travel insurance?

Maple Leaf Tours sells both Medical and Cancellation insurance through Allianz Insurance and strongly recommends purchasing insurance when traveling outside of Ontario. Allianz requires a medical questionnaire to be completed if the guest travelling is 65+ at the time of the tour.

You can call us anytime for a no-obligation quote for your tour. Please note that quotes are only valid for 14 days, after this time we will need to requote you for your travel insurance.

Why do I have to sign a Travel Insurance Waiver form?

Clients who do not purchase cancellation or medical insurance must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver form to acknowledge that it has been offered to them and that they understand the terms for not purchasing insurance. All forms must be signed and handed into the office prior to departure.

Forms can be emailed to [email protected]

What form of payment is accepted?

Maple Leaf Tours accepts Mastercard, Visa, Cash and cheques received more than 10 business days prior to departure.

When is final payment due?

Day Tours: Full payment is due at time of booking.

Overnight Tours: $100 deposit is due at time of booking with final payment due 60 days prior to departure.

Cruises: $500 deposit per person with final payment due 90 days prior to departure.

Exceptions include tours such as Montreal Grand Prix, NASCAR and Buffalo Bills Overnight Tours where 50% is due at time of booking with final payment due 60 days prior to departure.

Some tours will have special deposit requirements, e.g. tours that included flights, extended stay tours and others. We recommend reading the notes section on the tour itinerary for further clarification.

Can we get our money back once we have paid in full?

Day Tours: Non-refundable 30 days prior to departure

Overnight Tours: Non-refundable 45 days prior to departure

Cruises: Non-refundable at any time

Specialty Tours: Refund policies will be noted in the notes section of the Tour Itinerary, please note that tours that include flights or are extended stays will have non-refundable deposits and non-refundable final payments based on earlier dates due to the tour components.

Do you sell gift certificates?

Maple Leaf Tours sells gift cards in any dollar amount as well as for a specific tour. Our plastic, reusable gift cards make a great gift as they have no expiry date and can be used toward any tour.

Will we receive our tickets in the mail or do we have to pick them up?

To avoid lost or damaged tickets Maple Leaf Tours hands out all tickets on the day of departure. For special requests, please advise a member of our team at the time of booking. If we have not been made aware of a request we can not guarantee this can be accommodated within 14 days of departure.

Are there any restrictions when purchasing tickets?

Concert tours are booked in multiples of two only. If you are a single passenger wanting to book for a concert tour, we will put your name on a waiting list until we get another odd numbered group that we can match you up with. Depending on the tour additional restrictions may apply, please contact our office if you are unsure.

I am a single traveler will I need to share a seat with another passenger?

Maple Leaf Tours is excited to welcome many solo-travelers on its tours. Should your tour be sold out then you will be required to sit next to someone on the bus. Your Tour Director will discuss this with you upon arrival for check in, and make you aware of our other solo-travelers that you will need to sit beside.

Your Tour Director is always there to assist you should you have any concerns or special needs.

What does Single, Double, Triple & Quad mean?

Maple Leaf Tours rates are based on the number of people that would share a hotel room. For instance, if you were traveling by yourself you would pay the Single rate. If there were two of you sharing one room you would each pay the double rate and so on. Most tours only accommodate 4 per room however exceptions have been made for families where there are two adults and 3 children.

I want to go to New York City; Can I attend a Maple Leaf New York City Information Session?

Maple Leaf Tour Orientation Sessions are ONLY for Maple Leaf Tour clients who are booked on a New York City Tour. For more information, please call our office at 613-384-0012.

I'm booked on a cruise, what happens if there is a hurricane?

In the event of strikes, lockouts, stoppages of labour, riots, weather conditions, mechanical difficulties or any other reason whatsoever, Norwegian Cruise Line has the right to cancel, advance, postpone or substitute any scheduled sailing or itinerary without prior notice. Norwegian Cruise Line shall not be responsible for failure to adhere to published arrival and departure times for any of its ports of call. Norwegian Cruise Line may, but is not obliged to, substitute another vessel for any sailing and cannot be liable for any loss to passengers due to such cancellation, advancement, postponement or substitution. Reservations are subject to change or cancellation in the event of a full-ship charter, and in such event, NCL shall refund all passage moneys paid by the passenger.

Does the coach have a washroom?

All 56 Passenger Deluxe Motor Coaches are equipped with a washroom at the back of the coach.

I have a medical condition that requires me to have the front seat. Can you reserve that for me?

Due to the large volume of requests for the front seat Maple Leaf Tours policy is that all seats are on a first come first serve basis. If you are looking to get a seat closer to the front of the coach we do advise arriving early.

What are the duty free allowances with the United States?

After a stay of 24 hours or more (but less than 48 hours) in the United States, a Canadian citizen or resident may return to Canada with:

  • CND $200.00 worth of goods, tax and duty free, per person
  • Any purchases of alcohol or tobacco may be subject to duties and taxes

After a stay of over 48 hours or more (but less than 7 days) in the United States, a Canadian citizen or resident may return to Canada with:

  • CND $800.00 worth of goods, tax and duty free, per person
  • Purchases may include 1.14 litres (40 ounces) of liquor or 1 case of beer (24x355ml cans/bottles) or 1.5 litres of wine plus 200 cigarettes (1 carton), 50 cigars or cigarillos, 200 tobacco sticks, or 200 grams of manufactured tobacco.

After a stay of over 7 days or more in the United States, a Canadian citizen or resident may return to Canada with:

  • Purchases may include 1.14 litres (40 ounces) of liquor or 1 case of beer (24x355ml cans/bottles) or 1.5 litres of wine plus 200 cigarettes (1 carton), 50 cigars or cigarillos, 200 tobacco sticks or 200 grams of manufactured tobacco.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring?

Maple Leaf Tours allows 1 large piece of luggage and 1 carry on bag per client. Your carry on luggage must fit in over head compartment- keep in mind our overhead compartments are not as large as airplanes. If your carry on luggage does not fit,  your carry on will be stored under the coach and you will be responsible for paying the handling fee.  On certain overnight tours where you have a stop over at another location on the way to the destination, your larger pieces of luggage will go straight through to the destination and an overnight bag is recommended. Luggage handling may not included when you stay overnight at a hotel on your way to your destination, which is why we recommended an overnight bag that will be stored separately from your larger luggage.

Will the tour be cancelled if the weather is bad?

All scheduled tours will proceed regardless of weather conditions. Our drivers are experienced coach drivers and are looking out for the safety of each passenger at all times.

Are itineraries subject to changes?

All itineraries are subject to change. Every attempt will be made to include all sites mentioned within this itinerary. At times, circumstances beyond our control such as lines, traffic, closures, weather, natural disasters and late arrivals can severely restrict timing and cause items to be excluded. All timing, except scheduled appointments, is approximate. Maple Leaf Tours assumes no liability for itinerary exclusions, or guarantees that all sites be visited within the itinerary.

Are children allowed on your tours?

Children of all ages are welcome to travel on our family-themed tours; however children under two (2) years of age are not permitted on select tours. The bus portion of our ticket prices for babies and infants under 24 months is free provided that they do not occupy a seat. If you want your baby to have a seat, you must purchase a ticket.

Parents are reminded that many of our tours – unless specifically advertised as being for the whole family – are intended for adults and may not be enjoyed by, or be suitable for, children.

Some of our sports tours or girls-only tours do have a minimum age requirement. Please ask for details. This policy is subject to change at the discretion of management.

I am on a tour to the US but I am not a Canadian Citizen, do I need a visa?

You MUST apply for your I94 prior to your trip and print it off, this is no longer a service provided at the border crossing. Failure to do this may result in you being refused entry into the US.

A Form I-94 is needed by all visitors except: U.S. Citizens, returning resident aliens, aliens with immigrant visas, and most Canadian citizens visiting or in transit. Travelers will be issued an I-94 during the admission process at the port of entry. If you are traveling via a land border you may apply for an I-94 in advance here, saving time while at the port of entry later.

This link will take you to the page needed to complete your paperwork and attain your I94: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

Maple Season

Maple taffy tasting

Jump to section

Spring is synonymous with maples in Canada’s east—especially in French-speaking Quebec, producer of 80 percent of the world’s maple syrup. Sit down with locals at a traditional community feast over ham, split-pea soup and baked beans, join a festival, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the frosty woods, twirl gooey taffy onto a stick in the snow, catch a log-sawing competition and sample a flight of maple wine. It’s all par for the season.

Experiences

Sucrerie de la Montagne

In the spring, once maple trees have been tapped, locals head out to "sugar shacks" to sample all of that gooey goodness. You’ll find these shacks in and around most cities , but Montreal’s famed Au Pied de Cochon might just be the most popular. If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, head to the Sucrerie de la Montagne , located about an hour outside of the city.

Varieties of maple syrup

“Sugar bush” season in Ontario makes a great trip for any maple fan. First stop? Downtown Ottawa’s popular Maple Sugar Festival in Vanier Museopark . Then head to the countryside to try Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm in Edwards, producing syrup the traditional way since the 1800s, or Proulx Maple & Berry Farm in Cumberland for brunch in a classic wood cabin.

  • Travel Media Website

Maple tapping

Pick up maple products year-round at Moncton’s rustic Trites Maples , family-run since 1900. During maple season, splurge on stacks of homespun pancakes by the wood stove and bacon-wrapped maple glazed carrots hot off the grill. Watch the sap-to-syrup process at a “boiling camp.”

Sugar camp

Sugar Moon Farm , in the woods of northern Nova Scotia, marks the season with lavish brunches (think: maple-mustard sausages, coffee with maple whipped cream), interpretive how-to tours and classic Canadiana activities.

  • #VisitNovaScotia

Maple wine tasting

The Okanagan Valley’s Lang Vineyards claims to be the first ever to make maple wine, now found around the country. It’s a light dessert wine blending chardonnay with the iconic syrup and sap—best enjoyed with caramel ice cream. You can also sample it at Quebec’s maple spirits specialist, Domaine Labranche .

  • #QuebecOriginal

Maple syrup stacks

Manitoba’s Sugaring Off Festival in small-town Saint-Pierre-Jolys combines New France era history with traditional French-Canadian fare, demos, candy and syrup tastings, and foot-stomping fiddling competitions every April.

First year Naval Experience Program participants share their stories

June 27, 2024 - Royal Canadian Navy

maple travel and tourism

S3 Emma Duncan, a member of the Naval Experience Program, sits at the helm of HMCS Charlottetown during EX STEADFAST DEFENDER 24, in the North Atlantic.

It’s been one year since the first participants joined the Naval Experience Program and now they are sharing their stories and deciding whether to stick with the Navy or move on.

“I joined the Naval Experience Program because my dad, a Chief Warrant Officer, told me about the program after talking to RCN Chiefs,” said Emma Duncan, now a Sailor Third Class (S3) from Winnipeg, Manitoba. “The opportunity to explore the Navy without a long-term commitment was too good to pass up. Serving Canada like my father and brother felt like the biggest honor.”

S3 Duncan’s experience has been fulfilling, she said, from participating in the Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony to being part of the Honor Guard for His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) William Hall’s commissioning.

The Naval Experience Program offers a taste of life in the navy, letting people try different roles to see if they want to make it a career.

But even in the short term, adapting to life in the navy comes with its challenges. S3 Duncan noted that being away from home has been the hardest part. “I am very family-oriented, and not being able to have dinner with my family every night has been tough.” Luckily, the sense of camaraderie helped her overcome this challenge. “The Navy is like one big family,” she said.

“I have made lots of friends here in Halifax, and we spend a lot of time together, making it feel like home.”

For S3 Ulia Wahn, a participant from Brandon, Manitoba, the most significant challenge was adjusting to the fast-paced environment during a three-week sail on HMCS Charlottetown .

“I found myself lagging behind the qualified sailors, hesitant because of the fast-paced environment. It was challenging, but asking questions and taking one step forward helped me find my confidence,” said S3 Wahn.

“I got to participate in the crossing the line ceremony, work with the aircrew, and even sit in the Cyclone’s cockpit,” said S3 Duncan, recalling her three-week sail aboard HMCS Charlottetown during Operation REASSURANCE.

S3 Wahn’s most memorable experience was crossing the Arctic Circle on HMCS Charlottetown and participating in the King Neptune ceremony. It was an unforgettable experience,” said S3 Wahn.

Both S3s Duncan and Wahn plan to pursue full-time careers in the Navy. S3 Duncan has signed on as a Sonar Operator, excited about the adventures and opportunities that lie ahead. S3 Wahn, too, looks forward to a long-term naval career, valuing the sense of community and the skills she has gained.

As of June 2024, approximately 1,459 individuals applied to the NEP. 179 sailors have been successfully enrolled, surpassing the initial goal of 144, demonstrating a promising start for NEP. Over 500 applicants are currently in various stages of the recruitment process. Of the first group of NEP participants completing their one-year engagement, 74% have chosen to embark on a career with the Regular Force. The RCN will have more detailed data in the fall of 2024, as most current NEP participants complete their one-year engagement.

How the Pennsylvania Maple Museum came to Somerset County

maple travel and tourism

SOMERSET ― Maple tree tapping may be over for the year, but here's a new opportunity in Somerset County to experience the thrill of the maple syrup-making season all year long.

On Saturday, the Pennsylvania Maple Museum officially opens to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Somerset Historical Center, 10649 Somerset Pike. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled at 2 p.m. Guests are invited to come and check out the new exhibits, enjoy some maple treats and watch live demonstrations of maple-related crafts, like spotza (pouring hot maple syrup over crushed ice), sugar stirring (making maple syrup into sugar), coopering (bucket making), spile (spigot) and scrub brush making.

A preview of the museum: Pa. Maple Museum open for the 2024 Maple Tour

What you'll see at the maple museum

The Pennsylvania Maple Mu seum gives visitors a closer look at the history and equipment behind one of the commonwealth's best-known agricultural products, with more than 100 artifacts of items used over 300 years of maple production in Somerset County and Pennsylvania.

"It's fitting that a state maple museum is located in Somerset," said Mark Ware, executive director of the Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County, in a release announcing the museum's grand opening.

"Somerset County has been a huge producer of maple products since the late 1700s, due to its climate, high elevation and large farm population."

Visitors will then be able to see the museum during the Somerset Historical Center's normal open hours, which are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

The creation of the Pennsylvania Maple Museum was funded by donations from the Pennsylvania Maple Producers Association, Somerset County Maple Producers, Sechler's Sugar Shack and other donors, as well as grants from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies , the Somerset County Tourism Grant Program and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission .

Nature and Landscape

The Great Bear Rainforest is a land of fjords, rainforests, islands and great river estuaries. There are no roads. Instead, people travel by water. The many protected, unlogged and ancient rainforests, and the quiet, nutrient-rich ocean, support wildlife and ecosystems as they would have been thousands of years ago across the continent – where grizzly bears and wolf packs roam free and live from what they naturally have always lived from, including abundant salmon runs.

Seasons of the Great Bear Rainforest

Our experienced crew and naturalist will take you to areas where you’ll be able to witness peak nature and wildlife events. Spring brings bird migrations, newly awakened grizzly and black bears grazing on green sedges, pink salmonberry blossoms, spectacular snowcapped mountains and deep fjords where mountain goats come down almost to sea level, hot springs, and calmer weather. In summer, we see humpback whales, fin whales, killer whales, porpoises, other marine mammals, seabirds, mountain goats, porpoises, and dense intertidal life. West coast, sandy beaches beckon, some of them home to elusive wolves. In the fall we witness the return of the salmon to spawn, which draws grizzly, spirit and black bears to the estuaries, along with whales, sea lions, seals, eagles and coastal wolves.

A year into the 10-Year Cancer Care Action Plan to build capacity and expand access to cancer-care services to meet growing demand, more people in B.C. are benefiting from expanded screening, more access to diagnostic tests and better treatment.

“The progress we have made in enhancing cancer care in just one year is a testament to our commitment to people in B.C. to deliver the best cancer care when and where we need it, and the hard work of our health-care professionals,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “When we launched the 10-Year Cancer Action Plan, we promised to strengthen efforts to prevent, detect and treat cancers, that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

B.C. has been experiencing rapidly increasing demand for cancer-care services resulting from a growing and aging population as there more than 5.8 million people living in the province in 2023-24, an increase of almost 10% since 2020-21. Also, there are increasing rates of cancer among young people and, positively, a greater number of people with cancer living longer who require ongoing care.

To meet this growing need for cancer services, the Province has taken action and realized significant progress in 2023-24, one year since the plan’s launch:

Hiring more cancer-care professionals:

  • 92 cancer-care physicians have been hired, including 71 oncologists;
  • 32 additional radiation therapists; and
  • eight Indigenous patient navigators have been hired across all BC Cancer regional centres to directly support Indigenous patients.

Preventing and detecting cancer earlier:

  • 29,724 cervix self-screening kits have been distributed since B.C.’s program expanded provincewide with a first-in-Canada option to screen at home;
  • 27,326 more mammogram, colon and lung screenings were completed this year; and
  • 1,566 more positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans were performed, a 9.9% increase.

Treating more people:

  • 19,161 medical oncology consultations took place last year, a 6.6% increase;
  • 20,005 radiation oncology consultations occurred, a 5.7% increase;
  • 84,441 IV chemotherapy treatment starts were delivered, a 9% increase;
  • 177,096 radiation treatments were delivered, a 4.7% increase;
  • 153 more urgent cancer surgeries were completed, a 1.1% increase;
  • 1,398 trips for cancer patients were funded through the Canadian Cancer Society Travel Treatment Fund, representing a 742% increase, and the 5,867 individual travel arrangements made for cancer patients by Hope Air represented a 309% increase; and
  • these efforts as well as recruitment of more radiation-therapy staff and expansion of lower volume and innovative radiotherapy services have helped 76.1% people receive radiation treatment within four weeks, an increase of 11.1%.

Optimizing care through collaboration and partnership:

  • 63 new clinical trials opened with 157 interventional clinical trials actively enrolling participants across B.C.;
  • 1,398 trips for cancer patients were funded through the Canadian Cancer Society Travel Treatment Fund, representing a 742% increase;
  •  5,867 individual travel arrangements made for cancer patients by Hope Air represented a 309% increase; and
  • 11,722 nights at Canadian Cancer Society lodges were provided at no cost to patients (previously $55 a night).

Investing in an expanded cancer care system:

  • four new cancer centres advancing in Burnaby, Surrey, Kamloops and Nanaimo that will bring the total to 10 regional cancer centres in B.C.;
  • $24.6 million invested in a new cyclotron and radiopharmacy laboratory to support expanded volume of PET/CT scans;  and
  • $90 million of additional funding to support cancer care was added for 2024-25.

“The first year of B.C.’s 10-year Cancer Action Plan included an unpreceded mobilization of resources and support to expand and improve care for people with cancer throughout the province,” said Dr. Kim Nguyen Chi, executive vice-president and chief medical officer, BC Cancer. “Through this, and the collective commitment of our care teams and our partners, we are addressing today’s challenges and moving forward in our efforts to transform the system as a whole.”

Over the next year, the Province will continue taking action to further prevent, detect and treat cancers. This includes:

  • introducing new treatments, improved radiation-treatment technologies and new anti-cancer drug protocols;
  • expanding the use of the Get Vaccinated system to include the HPV vaccine;
  • making it easier for people without a primary care provider to access colon, breast and lung screening services;
  • reducing wait times for diagnostic tests;
  • continuing to expand clinical trials and cancer research facilities;
  • increasing BC Cancer’s Indigenous workforce and ensuring high-quality, culturally safe cancer care; and
  • continuing to hire key clinical and physician roles in alignment with B.C’s Health Human Resources strategy.

“As we move forward to ensure every patient receives effective, timely and compassionate care and secure a cancer-free future for more people in B.C., we will continue to expand cancer-care services to meet the increasing demand from our growing and aging population,” said Dix. “We will meet that challenge, embrace that purpose and we will excel.”

Quick Facts:

  • One in two people in B.C. will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.
  • This year, more than 34,000 people in B.C. will be diagnosed with cancer.
  • The number of people in B.C. who receive a new diagnosis of cancer is projected to increase from 34,000 in 2024 to 45,000 in 2034.
  • Currently, approximately two-thirds of people in B.C. diagnosed with cancer survive five years or more after a cancer diagnosis.
  • B.C. has the second-lowest age-adjusted mortality rate from cancer in Canada.
  • Since 2017, B.C. has committed more than $1 billion to support the creation of a strong and sustainable cancer-care system.

Two backgrounders follow.

Backgrounders

What people are saying about b.c.’s investments in cancer care.

Jennifer Rice, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health –

“Cancer strikes communities in every corner of our province, and it’s crucial that care is within reach for us all. Our government will continue to support people in rural and remote communities when they need to travel to receive care, so they can focus on treatment, not the logistics and costs of getting the services they need.”

Kelli Paddon, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity –

“Through B.C.’s 10-year Cancer Care Plan, we’re working towards eliminating cervical cancer in a decade. By launching cervix self-screening provincewide, health care is made more accessible, and empowers people with the tools they need to take prevention into their own hands.”

Sarah Roth, president and chief executive officer, BC Cancer Foundation –

“BC Cancer Foundation was honoured to receive the provincial government’s historic $150-million cancer-research grant in 2023. The grant – working in tandem with hundreds of foundation donor-funded, groundbreaking research initiatives, clinical trials and capital projects – serves as a catalyst to save more lives in every corner of B.C.”

David Byres, president and chief executive officer, Provincial Health Services Authority –

“All British Columbians are deserving of high quality, culturally safe and equitable outcomes and experiences. To achieve this, we are leveraging expert thinking from the Global Advisory Panel, as well as the skill and experiences of staff, physicians, patients, families, Indigenous and First Nations people, researchers, volunteers and partners across the province. Together, we are focused on creating the best possible outcomes and experience for those we serve.”

Sarah Johnston, cancer patient and member of BC Cancer – Kelowna’s Regional Patient Experience Committee –

“I finished chemo and radiation therapy for breast cancer one year ago and today I’m doing everything I can to be a healthier version of myself and to use my voice to improve the experiences of people with cancer. This work is about more than improving care today. It’s about ensuring that when our loved ones face their own cancer diagnoses they have the best possible experience and long, healthy lives beyond cancer.”

B.C.’s 10-Year Cancer Action Plan

In 2023, the Province launched B.C.’s Cancer Action Plan, investing $440 million to:

  • expand cancer-care teams and service hours and hire more staff;
  • introduce revised pay structures as of April 1, 2023, to ensure B.C. is attractive and competitive nationally and internationally for oncologists and radiation therapists;
  • improve cancer-screening programs;
  • increase Indigenous patient support positions;
  • support cancer research and attract the skilled cancer-care providers needed to provide specialized treatments; and
  • add new funding to support people living in rural and remote communities who need to travel for cancer care.

The Province’s Action Plan is strengthening cancer care so more people throughout British Columbia can count on timely and co-ordinated health-care services.

The Action Plan is driven by four key priorities:

  • Prevent cancer and find cancer earlier through prevention, screening, diagnosis and staging to provide the best chance of lowering the risk of developing or dying from cancer, and helping people live longer, healthier lives.
  • Ensure timely access to cancer treatments so more people can get the right treatment faster.
  • Optimize care through collaboration and partnership to support patients in each step of their cancer journey and connect patients to care close to home with the newest treatment options, driven by scientific advances.
  • Revitalize our cancer-care system through essential enablers to build a strong cancer-care system of health-care professionals, as well as the data and research, the capital and IT infrastructure necessary.
