The North Wall, Oxford

Mark Thomas: Gaffa Tapes

Jokes, rants, politics, play and the occasional sing song.

If you don’t know what he does ask your parents.

In his time he has won awards (current total is now officially ‘f**kloads’), forced a politician to resign, changed laws on tax and protest, become Guinness Book of Records world record holder for number of protests in 24 hours, taken the police to court 3 times and won, walked the length of the Israeli Wall in the West Bank and generally mucked about trying to have fun and f**k the right people off.

This show is more of the above.

“A nation that devours another will one day devour itself”

Set when The Great Devouring comes home, England & Son is a one-man play written specifically for the award-winning political comedian Mark Thomas by award-winning playwright Ed Edwards (The Political History of Smack and Crack, Paines Plough’s Roundabout, Soho and UK tour).

This is the first play Mark has ever performed in that he has not written himself. With some deep, dark laughs-and some deep, dark love-along the way, England & Son emerges from characters Mark knew in his childhood and Ed’s lived experience in jail.

Prepare for Mark to take you on a kaleidoscopic odyssey where disaster capitalism, empire, stolen youth and stolen wealth merge into the simple tale of a working-class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.

Mark Thomas in England & Son

★★★★☆      ferocious.

Traverse: Tue 5 – Sat 9 Dec 2023 Review by Hugh Simpson

Mark Thomas’s performance in England & Son , allied to an unflinching piece of writing, has a rare intensity. The Fringe First winner is now on tour to the Traverse until Saturday.

Apart from some odd choices in the way it is presented – of which more later – there is very little that can be criticised in a production with righteous fire and a flinty sincerity.

Ed Edwards’s uncompromising script was written specifically for the comedian and performer Thomas. This is the first time Thomas has appeared in a play written by someone else, and his fame is such that he gets his name above the title of a play that draws partly on his and Edwards’s experiences.

It tells of a father and son, with the father’s time involved in atrocities in outposts of the collapsing British Empire leaving a legacy of violence that is passed down through the generations.

This pulls no punches in its depiction of a country whose wealth was built on enslaving, killing and stealing from the populations of other countries.

Afterwards, there has been no recognition of what had been done to those populations – or to those whose involvement in the stealing and killing created a mindset that could not be shaken off back home, where theft and murder are no longer state-sanctioned.

The father and son’s surname is England – hence the title. This symbolism could easily come across as clunky (not to mention giving Scottish audiences their usual smug get-out that the Empire somehow had nothing to do with them) but is carried off with aplomb by Edwards.

There is a directness and clarity that is arresting and moving. The piece is tremendously well-structured. After depictions of brutality at home, in the care system and from the ‘short sharp shock’ of the 1980s, there are moments of possible redemption. We know, however, from the opening of the play, that these are illusions – just like the conviction of those in the more comfortable world that their wealth is earned rather than being built on the backs of others.

From that opening, with Thomas curled up on the floor screaming, his performance is utterly remarkable. There is a rawness, a bitter reality and a dark humour to it, allied to years of stagecraft and the knowledge of how to involve an audience. The intimate surroundings of Traverse 2 are filled with an atmosphere that is positively electric.

He is tremendously well served by the direction of Cressida Brown, which makes notably good use of the acting space and avoids any of the longueurs that one-handers are prone to. Credit must also go to the movement direction of Simon Jones.

The lighting of Richard Williamson and MJ McCarthy’s sound design are particularly strong at the most traumatic moments, whether at home or abroad.

peculiar structure

This is a production of enormous impact, so the question must be why this is not an automatic five-star review. The answer lies in the peculiar structure of the evening. The play itself comes after an interval, which is precede by a half-hour segment of Thomas discussing his and Edwards’s work on storytelling, drama and stand-up with addicts.

Because of Thomas’s experience and engaging manner, this is always going to be interesting and well performed. However, it comes across as dispensable, even comparatively lightweight, in comparison to what follows.

It is stated outright that the interval is there for the benefit of theatre bar takings. This may be true, particularly in the current climate, but is a less than satisfactory way to construct a piece. Traverse audiences, moreover, are well used to interval-free productions. It leads to decidedly lopsided feel – in this case, more is quite definitely not more.

The play itself, however, is a compelling piece both personally and politically, that demands to be seen.

Running time: Two hours (including one interval). Traverse , 10 Cambridge Street, EH1 2ED. Phone booking: 0131 228 1404 Tue 5 – Sat 9 Dec 2023. Evenings: 7.30pm. (Traverse 2). Tickets and details: Book here .

Mark Thomas Tour

Fresh off the back of a sold-out run and the highest of critical acclaim at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, the political godfather of UK comedy, Mark Thomas, is back to what he does best; taking down politicians, mucking about, new ideas and finding hope.

This award-winning comedian (is there any other type?) asks how did we get here? What are we going to do about it? Who’s up for a sing-song? After lockdowns and isolation, this show is about the simple act of being in a room together and toppling international capitalism.

In previous shows Mark has talked about visiting the West Bank and Jenin, lobbying Parliament, walking in the footsteps of the highest NHS officials, playing at The Royal Opera House, making stuff for TV, radio and newspapers and going undercover. This latest outing is more creative fun from one of our oldest surviving alternative comics.

Mark Thomas in England & Son at the Arcola Theatre | Review

Mark Thomas is a very funny man.

His impressions deft, his timing smart, his audience interaction of the joshing variety – Thomas may have barbs for politicians but doles out nothing more than light ribbing to late-comers or forgot-to-silence-phone-owners. He seems like a kind man and perhaps all the gentler for the tale he is about to tell.

Mark Thomas in England & Son at the Arcola Theatre. (c) Alex Brenner.

On tour with England and Son , written for him by Ed Edwards, Thomas adds a ‘first act’ of a lights-up introduction spoken directly to the audience. He holds forth, enacting various characters he’s encountered in the drug treatment facilities where Edwards, in recovery himself, works. They all have extreme stories that they need to share, to get to their truth, as part of the process of getting clean and sober. Thomas and Edwards have workshopped with these fellow travellers to create the ‘second act’ England and Son an extant one-act, one-man play that Thomas explains is still evolving.

The warm-up, which is both droll and edgy is also extremely explanatory: the quintessence of telling over showing even if he spins a fine yarn and does great impressions. Perhaps this intro is to offer a lighter touch before the main work but already the tragic potential is everywhere – a point he underscores as he explains the recovery group are learning 5-act structure with guilt, shame and denial indelibly written on the white board they use to plot their stories. The atmosphere is therefore intimate, confessional, raw and profoundly sad.

After the interval, the play runs. Basically, the entire performance is a trigger warning. It’s filled with every trauma and degradation – a relentless tale of a boy who never stood a chance. Thomas’ performance is energetic, compelling and utterly committed. I found the horror and resultant pathos almost emotionally unbearable – like the horrifying scenes in various Dickens novels where things get really grim for kids but without the comfort of knowing the episode would meet some comic relief somewhere.

Edwards’ rage at the sins of Thatcherism, class structure and empire are present but not as relentless as the pure tragedy of the story.

I wonder how I would have received the performance if I’d not been treated to the preamble? If instead there’s been a chat or a Q&A at the end? The sense of the work being a draft came across strongly but for that, I don’t fault it. As a searing tale of desperation and despair, Edwards’ voice – enacted by Thomas – was real and strong. Yet because of this reality, it was painful. As an example of the dramatisation and causes of misery, England and Son succeeds. However, this play offers very little diversion, and despite Edwards’ recovery (a topic the work doesn’t explore) it also offers very little hope. This is a very sad play starring a very funny man.

Mark Thomas

Mark Thomas

He is best known for his campaigning Channel 4 series, in which he employed, Michael Moore-style, televisual stunts to get his message across. But his work also has a serious side: in one episode he got an Indonesian military chief to admit on camera that their government used torture.

Thomas has said his passion for politics was inherited from his father, a builder and lay preacher at Clapham's Nazarene Church, even if he didn’t inherit his Thatcherite beliefs.

He won a scholarship to Christ's Hospital public school, but he would frequently play truant, often to the theatre, before going on to study at Bretton Hall drama college in Wakefield.

There he began performing his own sketches and shows, doing benefit shows for the miners' strike while still a student. After college he worked for his father by day and did stand-up by night until he could turn pro.

In 1992, his Edinburgh show was nominated for the Perrier award – the same year the fizzy water brand was bought by Nestle, one of the corporations Thomas now campaigns against so vociferously.

Mark Thomas in 'England and Son' (work in progress)

Proudly presented by tin cat entertainment.

Thu 6 Jul, 20:00

Mark Thomas

A play written by Ed Edwards Directed by Cressida Brown

"A nation that devours another will one day devour itself".

Set when The Great Devouring comes home, England and Son is a one-man play written specifically for the award winning political comedian Mark Thomas by award winning playwright Ed Edwards (The Political History of Smack and Crack, Paines Plough's Roundabout, Soho and UK tour).

This is the first play Mark has ever performed in that he has not written himself.

With some deep, dark laughs - and some deep, dark love - along the way, England and Son emerges from characters Mark knew in his childhood and Ed's lived experience in jail. Prepare for Mark to take you on a kaleidoscopic odyssey where disaster capitalism, Thatcherite politics and stolen wealth merge into the simple tale of a working class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.

Memorial Tournament Score Predictions: How the Top PGA Tour Golfers Will Fare at Muirfield Village

The PGA Tour heads to Muirfield Village for this week's signature event, the Memorial Tournament. All the best golfers on Tour will tee it up at Muirfield as they prepare for next week's U.S. Open.

Attempting to predict the winner is one thing, but how about predicting the exact final score of the winner along with the exact final score of the top 10 golfers in the field? That's what I'm going to attempt to do in this article.

Let's dive in.

All odds listed in this article are via BetMGM Sportsbook

Memorial Tournament Score Predictions

Winning score: -11.

We've seen a wide range of winning scores at Muirfield Village over the years. Even over the past decade, we've had a winning score as high as -7 like Viktor Hovland last year and as low as -19 like Patrick Cantlay in 2019. That makes it difficult to predict the winning score this time around, but I'm going to guess it'll creep into the double-digits at finish at 11 under par.

Scottie Scheffler (+350) Score Prediction: -11

Do you really want to bet against Scottie Scheffler this week? I certainly don't. The fiasco in Louisville is behind him and now he's coming into this event off a week of rest. Not only that, but he has finished third at this event the last two years he's competed in it. It's time for him to reestablish himself in the winner's circle once again.

Rory McIlroy (+900) Score Prediction: -7

Rory McIlroy only has one top 5 finish at the Memorial Tournament. He's had good results, but nothing crazy. Muirfield Village takes come creativity at times and McIlroy doesn't always have that ability. I expect another good but not great result from him this week.

Xander Schauffele (+900) Score Prediction: -9

Schauffele is another golfer, like McIlroy, who hasn't had great results at Muirfield but it's tough not to expect something special from him this week now that he's fresh off his first major victory. There's a chance that big win got the weight off his shoulders and he may just go on a run and rattle off a few more wins. He has statistically been the second-best golfer on the Tour this season.

Collin Morikawa (+1400) Score Prediction: -10

Morikawa has found his game once again. He found his short game in April and has now found his iron play in May. All signs point to him trending in the right direction and now he returns to a course that he's already won at once in his career. This could be his week but I think he may fall just short.

Viktor Hovland (+1800) Score Prediction: -8

The defending Memorial Tournament champion is returning to Muirfield Village in good form after finishing solo third at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago. Did he find his swing again or was that an anomaly performance? We'll find out more about Hovland's 2024 performance this week.

Ludvig Aberg (+2000) Score Prediction: -1

It might be time to sell a bit of stock in Ludvig Aberg. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship, is battling a nagging knee injury, and now goes to a course that doesn't exactly fit his style of play. I don't think he'll be in contention on the weekend.

Justin Thomas (+2500) Score Prediction: -5

Just like Morikawa and Hovland, Thomas is another golfer who had a tough first half of the season but may have found something after finishing T5, T21 and T8 in his last three starts. He finished runner-up at Muirfield Village in 2020.

Patrick Cantlay (+2800) Score Prediction: +1

Cantlay has won this event twice in his year and it's historically been a great course fit for him, but his game is trending in the wrong direction. He has gone T23, T29 and T53 in his last three starts. I think he's going to finish above par this weekend, but if there is a course where he can turn his game around, it's Muirfield Village.

Hideki Matsuyama (+4000) Score Prediction: E

Matsuyama's peak came in February and March and now he seems to be on a downward spiral, finishing T38 and T35 in his last two starts. Much like Cantlay, he's a past winner of this event but his recent metrics make me think this won't be the week for him.

Jordan Spieth (+4000) Score Prediction: +3

Jordan Spieth has been in horrific form. He hasn't finished 28th or better since the Valero Texas Open in early April. His ball striking is bad, his short game is out of sorts, and he can't hit a putt. I'm all out on Spieth this week.

Michigan Central concert live blog: Mother-daughter duo from Iowa first in line for show

Detroit — Hours before thousands converge on Corktown for Michigan Central Station's big concert, a handful of people were lined up outside the gated area of Roosevelt Park where the concert will be held — and they'd traveled all the way from Iowa to be there.

Lori Pierce and Alexa Groth, a mother and daughter from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, were the first people in line for the Michigan Central concert Thursday. They arrived near the entrance of the event between 9:30 and 10 a.m., Pierce said.

Attendees are expected to be able to enter the event at 6 p.m. Pierce and Groth are having a “blast” and listening to music as they wait, they said.

“People are saying hi to us, which never happens where we’re from,” said Groth, a 33-year-old resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Only three people were in line for the event as of 12:45 p.m. Pierce, a 57-year-old resident of Mount Vernon, Iowa, said she and her daughter thought the time they were arriving wasn’t early enough, but they ended up being the first ones in line. They often go to concerts together, and they like to get there early so they don’t miss any of the action, Groth said.

She said she has been “obsessed” with Detroit since she was 11 or 12. She learned about the history and became a fan of music by Detroit artists. She and her mom visited Detroit for the first time last September to go to a 50 Cent concert.

“We’re from Portland, Oregon, originally, so we’ve been in big cities and been a part of that before, but this city is so special,” Pierce said. “This city has people like we’ve never met before, who just talk to you on the street, and people are just like so kind and nice here. It truly feels like a magical wonderland to us, you know.”

“It’s my Disneyland,” Groth chipped in.

Road Closures

Because of the concert, Michigan Avenue is blocked off starting at Rosa Parks Boulevard. There are also road closures on some of the other nearby streets.

There are 20,000 tickets that were reserved in advance of the free event.

Delonte West Arrested Again, Takes Alarming Mug Shot

Jennifer lopez cancels tour amid ben affleck separation speculation, jennifer lopez cancels summer tour ... amid ben affleck drama.

Jennifer Lopez will not be hitting the road this summer after all -- as the singer is canceling her planned tour outright, even before it starts ... TMZ has learned.

A rep for Live Nation tells us Jen's "THIS IS ME...LIVE" tour -- which was supposed to get underway in June and hit a bunch of North American venues through August -- is getting completely scrapped.

The reason ... we're told, J Lo is "taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends." Jen herself also addressed the cancelation, hopping on her site OntheJLo to say, ... "I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary."

She adds, "I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…"

No other official explanation was provided, but we have a bit more insight. While there were rumblings of weak ticket sales earlier this month, sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ this was NOT a factor in the decision ... as the tour was even seeing an uptick in ticket sales in key cities.

We're told this was a very difficult decision for J Lo and, -- and like she expressed in her note, she's bummed. Of course, there's other stuff going on in Jen's life right now that could possibly be pertinent to this ... which seems to be reflected in the official reasoning.

Jennifer and her husband, Ben Affleck , have faced public scrutiny over their marriage. The couple has sent several mixed messages about the state of their relationship ... stepping out a number of times together, despite currently living apart .

LN says fans who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded. However, if you bought a ticket through a 3rd party reseller -- SeatGeek, StubHub, VividSeats, etc. -- you're encouraged to reach out to them directly for more details.

Remember, Ben started staying at a Brentwood home earlier this spring ... with Jennifer residing in their Beverly Hills abode -- which they scooped up for $60 million just last year.

Neither Ben nor Jen have addressed the situation publicly ... but this tour nixing is either good news or bad news for them -- hard to interpret it, really. Either way, no Jen on tour for now.

Mark Bradford got a late start as an artist. A former hairstylist, he didn’t begin to work with serious determination until he was 30, when he enrolled as a painting student at CalArts in Valencia. His first exhibition to gain widespread traction waited until he was 40; “ Freestyle ,” a 2001 group show of American artists proposed the emergence of “post-Black art,” work that inevitably encompassed Black experiences (and, in Bradford’s case, queer experiences as well), but insisted that it not be ghettoized by race or sexuality. Much the same way that Black history is American history, Black art is American art.

Discover the change-makers who are shaping every cultural corner of Los Angeles. This week we bring you The Creators, who are leaving their mark in film, art, music and more. Come back each Sunday for another installment.

Now 62, Bradford ranks among the top artists to have emerged in — and defined — American art in the 21st century. Recently he surprised many with a new sculpture, “Death Drop 2023,” a 10-foot man sprawled on the floor, his pose lodged somewhere between a joyful, gay ballroom-culture dance move and a gruesome murder victim. It plays against Bradford’s achievement of having revived dormant abstract painting in a time dominated by figurative imagery.

His sway stems from far more than multimillion-dollar sales in an overheated art market, although a $12-million auction of his monumental canvas “Helter Skelter,” a 34-foot-wide meditation on the race war Charles Manson envisioned starting, is nothing to sneeze at.

Bradford’s U.S. representation at the 2017 Venice Biennale is more to the point. He opened the five-room exhibition with a bulbous, abstract painted sculpture suspended from the ceiling that nearly filled the space. Evoking a bodily tumor, the ugly mass crowded visitors against the walls.

Mark Bradford.

Bradford titled his show “Tomorrow Is Another Day,” the cringey line spoken by Vivien Leigh’s weepy Scarlett O’Hara at the melodramatic close of “Gone With the Wind.” Her remark minimized a brutal history of white supremacy while auguring its endurance. The Oscar-laden romantic fantasy launched a thousand pop culture satires, while Bradford marshaled the gay dialect of camp in defense of moral seriousness.

Building on the found-object aesthetic of L.A. predecessors such as Noah Purifoy, who made assemblages out of the charred remnants of the 1965 Watts riots, Bradford also constructs paintings from canvases densely layered with street signage scavenged from fences, telephone poles and urban walls in South Los Angeles, where he was born and works today. And the MacArthur Fellowship winner, who also won this year’s $500,000 Getty Prize, helped open Art + Practice, an exhibition space in Leimert Park.

Since the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, museums have focused on contemporary art’s presentation of Black figures, but Bradford’s internationally acclaimed work demonstrates the continuing power of abstraction.
