7 great things to do in Moni, Flores

1. watch the coloured lakes at the kelimutu national park.

Mt. Kelimutu is an active volcano in the Moni region, and it’s definitely a highlight of any trip to Flores. The crater lakes are known for their unique colors, which change over time due to chemical reactions and volcanic activity. Scientists believe that the colors of the lakes are caused by the dissolution of minerals in the water, such as iron and manganese. As the minerals interact with the volcanic gases and sunlight, they create a range of vibrant colors that change over time, including turquoise, green, and red. The lakes have been a source of fascination for scientists and locals alike, with local legend attributing their colors to the spirits of the dead.

Schedule: 5-18, Price: 150k IDR (9€), 225k IDR (14€) in the weekend

mt kelimutu

You can view the Kelimutu crater lakes from several viewing points within the national park, with the most popular spot being the summit viewpoint . The trek to the summit takes approximately 30 minutes and is quite an easy hike. The best time to visit the lakes is early in the morning when the sun is rising, as this is when the colors of the lakes are most vivid.

2. Learn the unique culture of the region in the traditional villages

As many regions in Flores, the Kelimutu region where Moni is located is home to some traditional villages. These villages are home to members of specific tribes, and they push to preserve their cultural heritage and religion. Typically these villages have traditional wooden and palm leaf houses, and village elders who drive the tribe. They follow a Catholic religion, but deeply intertwined with their animistic local religion and rituals. Visiting traditional villages is one of the most interesting and unique things to do in Moni and in Flores as a whole.

Djopu (or Jopu) traditional village

This traditional village located near the town of Moni that is home to the Lio people . When we visited this village, we were greeted by Mama Maria , a tribe elder with a gift for storytelling. With a mix of English and Indonesian, she showed us her village and let us into the ceremonial house . There, we sat and listened to her enthusiastically talking about the Djopu traditions : the seeding and harvest ceremonies (with buffalo sacrifices), the election of new leaders…

For me, this was one of the most authentic traditional village we visited in all of Flores. This is because they seem to keep their tradition but also move with the modern era (aka less trying to please the tourists). Also, Mama Maria is a natural speaker, so if you visit Djopu you’ll find yourself just listening to her in awe.

Wologai traditional village

Another really interesting traditional village to visit in Wologai . It is also home to Lio people and is conveniently located close to Moni village. This one has a sad story attached to it, as it burned down recently. However, all the tribe members have put an effort to rebuild and it now looks amazing! The elder Leo showed us around the village and told us the history of its clans , the sun and the moon monument, the storm stone (that if a foreigner touches it a storm unleashes, we didn’t try!) as well as the symbols carved on the houses.

Leo is very passionate about his village and will immerse you into the traditions and history of his home. I really recommend that you visit Wologai.

Other traditional villages around Moni

There are other traditional villages in Moni and the Kelimutu region. Some of them are  Saga ,  Wolobewa  or  Puutuga traditional villages .

3. Go trekking in the unique nature of the region

For nature lovers and adventure seekers, Moni will not disappoint. The region boasts stunning landscapes, from rolling hills and lush forests to towering mountains and cascading waterfalls. Trekking in the Kelimutu National Park , as I mentioned above, is a popular activity, with trails leading to the famous tri-colored Kelimutu crater lakes.

But this region has more to offer! You can also explore the Wolojita forest , where you can spot a variety of bird and wildlife species. The trek to the Detusoko waterfall is another highlight, with the trail leading through traditional villages and past picturesque rice paddies.

We particularly enjoyed trekking to Muru Keba waterfall , a beautiful waterfall close to Moni village. The trail is not easy to follow (aka there is no trail at times) and some areas are a bit harder physically, but it is totally worth it to spend some time in these waterfalls by yourself (literally not a single tourist or local)! And on the way you can also see the Mutulo’o Hot Steam, a spot with volcanic activity from Mt. Kelimutu.

We didn’t see anyone in the Muru Keba waterfall or on the way there

moni travel

I am not aware of any guided trekking activities around Moni, but I am sure that if you ask your accommodation or driver they can figure something out!

4. Visit the traditional markets of Moni

If you’re looking to experience the local culture of the Moni region in Flores, Indonesia, visiting traditional markets should be at the top of your list. The markets offer a glimpse into the daily life of the local people and are a great way to sample the local cuisine and purchase unique handicrafts, as well as interact with locals. The markets are usually held in the morning and offer a wide variety of products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, textiles, and souvenirs. The Moni village market is a popular spot and is held on Mondays, and the Nduaria fruit & vegetables market is very picturesque. Alternatively, you can visit the markets in nearby towns, such as Ende and Maumere (the last one is not so “nearby”, but you can check it out if you include it in your itinerary).

5. Attend a local festival in Moni

If you time it right, you can pair your visit to Moni with an incredible experience attending a local festival. The most incredible and spiritual one is the Pati Ka Du’a Bapu Ata Mata , the yearly festival by the Lio people to honor their ancestors at the Kelimutu crater lakes. The Lio people believe that souls depart this world through the crater lakes, so every year they visit them to give offerings and perform rituals. This festival occurs on August 14th and is followed by festivities in the traditional villages.

If you are in the area in December , you can enjoy the Nduariao Festival , which celebrates the end of the harvest season. It’s a time of thanksgiving and an opportunity for the local people to showcase their unique cultural traditions. The festival begins with a traditional ceremony where offerings are made to the ancestors and the spirits of the land. The locals dress in traditional attire and perform dances and music, accompanied by the sounds of gongs and drums. The festival also features a market where visitors can purchase local handicrafts, clothing, and traditional foods.

6. Have a coffee with a view at Detusoko rice terraces

This is by no means an epic thing to do in Moni, but it was our first stop from the airport and the moment we knew we would fall in love with Flores. The Detusoko rice terraces are absolutely beautiful and have nothing to envy to other rice terraces like Tegallalang or Jatiluwih in Ubud, Bali . There are a couple of local cafés just atop the terraces so you can sit back and take in the beauty of Flores’ countryside.

7. Go birdwatching

The Moni region in Flores, Indonesia, is an excellent destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. With its stunning natural beauty and diverse ecosystem, the region is home to a wide variety of bird species. You can spot endemic birds such as the Flores crow, Flores monarch, and Flores green pigeon, as well as other species like the white-rumped kingfisher, scarlet minivet, and flame-breasted sunbird. The best time for birdwatching in Moni is from September to November when the birds are most active. The Kelimutu National Park and the Wolojita forest are two popular spots for birdwatching, and you can also take guided tours to learn more about the birds and their habitat.

How to get to Moni in Flores, Indonesia

Getting to flores.

To get to Moni you’ll have to get to the island of Flores. The easiest way to get to Moni is to fly to the airport in Ende and then drive around 2h to the town of Moni. Alternatively you can fly to either of the other two airports in the island: Labuan Bajo or Maumere, but both are quite far. However, if you start your Flores itinerary in Labuan Bajo or Maumere, your itinerary will naturally go through Moni.

Getting to Moni From Ende

If you’re only visiting Moni, you can rent a car in the Ende airport and use it to explore the region. If you’re following a longer itinerary through Flores, renting a car is still technically possible. However, the geography of the island (long and narrow), makes it so it is hard to do a circular itinerary, and returning a car to a different location increases the price immensely. Instead, I suggest you hire a driver, which takes a lot of worries out of the picture. We had a great time with our driver Gusti in our Flores trip. You can contact him through WhatsApp and get a quote in this number +62 82147244300. He is an excellent driver and, even though he will tell you he’s not a guide, he is very knowledgeable and will recommend you places to visit and help you communicate with the locals.

Where to stay in Moni in Flores, Indonesia

The best place to stay to explore the Kelimutu area is Moni, a little village which is little more than a bend of the road, but is the heart of the region. There are a few bars and restaurants and a range of accommodations for visitors. As for the rest of Flores, hotels and guesthouses offer simple accommodations, but they more than make up for it with the kindness of the hosts.

Here are some recommendations based on your budget:

We stayed at Bintang Bungalow and it was affordable, clean and our hostess was really welcoming and funny. They have double rooms with bathroom and breakfast included starting at 165k IDR (10€). Another option in this price range is Rice field homestay .

accommodation moni

The view of Moni from our terrace at Bintang Bungalow

If you can spare some money for a nicer accommodation, stay at the The Geckos Homestay . This hotel offers nice, clean and beautiful wooden bungalows for 2 people with bathroom and Indonesian outdoors shower and including breakfast for 450k IDR (28€). Another great option within this range is Mahakali , located on the slope of the volcano. Both of these hotels are a bit further away from Moni but offer great views and a stay in nature. If you prefer something closer to town, check out Rago’s Homestay .

While there is no lavish luxury in the region, there are some options for those seeking some extra comforts. One of them is Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge , a cute bungalow resort located close to Moni. Another option is  Kelimutu Paradiso Resort , which offers spacious and beautiful bungalows with breakfast for 1m IDR (61€). I want to stress that if you only want Western-style luxury, this is not the case and I would recommend that you visit other areas of Indonesia.

Where to eat in Moni in Flores, Indonesia

If you’re staying in Moni, the place to be is  Mopi’s Place a hip restaurant, bar and concert house where each night the whole town comes to life. Their food is delicious and affordable and there are options if you want to keep local (such as chicken curry or gado-gado ) as well as international food for the less adventurous. Do not miss their delicious local coffee and moke (a palm liquor). Try their delicious Espresso Moke to taste both at the same time!

where to eat in moni

Other nice options for local food in the area are Good Moni Cafe & Resto or  Santiago Cafe & Resto . For a unique culinary experience, head to the traditional market in Moni town and try the Babi Kelempung, pork cooked in a bamboo tube. This sweet and savory dish is a local specialty and a must-try when in Moni.

Closing statement

The region of Moni in Flores, Indonesia is truly a hidden gem that should not be missed on any traveler’s itinerary. From hiking to the mesmerizing Kelimutu National Park and witnessing the colorful lakes at sunrise to visiting traditional villages and interacting with the locals, there is something for everyone in Moni. The natural beauty and cultural richness of this region make it a must-visit destination in Indonesia. So, pack your bags and head to Moni for an unforgettable adventure!

Table of Contents

About Moni Village

Moni is a small village located about 47 kilometers from Ende, the capital city. The exact location is Ende, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Generally, tourists visit here while visiting Mount Kelimutu.

In addition to its beautiful natural scenery, Moni has several bustling traditional markets. In these markets, bartering is still the primary way to transact. Aside from that, there are also Ikat weaving souvenirs and traditional dances.

From Kupang, you can travel to Moni via Denpasar or Jakarta. Upon arrival in Kupang, you will fly again to Maumere, then take a bus to Ende.

Getting to Moni from Maumere requires a travel time of about 3 hours while getting there from Ende requires a travel time of about 2 hours.

Most tourists will spend the night in Moni before visiting Kelimutu Lake, within Kelimutu National Park (TNK). There are many lodging options in Moni, ranging from affordable to expensive.

In Moni, many locals offer lodging for tourists. Depending on the facilities obtained, the prices range from 150,000 rupiahs to one million rupiahs.

Furthermore, you can admire the hills that surround the village, as well as a terraced rice field. Also, you should not miss the coolness of the Moni waterfall and the beauty of the sunset from Mount Kelimutu.

The point to note is that it’s a good idea not to go anywhere without a local guide. A few parts of this national park are inaccessible due to geothermal instability.

Moni Waterfall

As well as serving as a stopping point for tourists visiting Maumere and Labuan Bajo, the village has a refreshing waterfall. The waterfall is not far from the inn. You can walk there in five minutes.

Despite the dry season, this waterfall had a reasonably heavy water flow. Swimming or playing in the water is possible in the natural pool below the waterfall.

Kelimutu Lake

Lake Kelimutu is one of the highlights of Flores. Located in Mount Kelimutu National Park, Moni Village is about 15 kilometers away by motorized vehicle, which takes 30 minutes. You can also rent a motorbike from residents.

The watercolor on this lake can change at any time. In Kelimutu, locals believe that the dead rest in the lake. Some plants are rarely found in other parts of Flores around Kelimutu.

Kelimutu Mountain

A must-see destination besides the lake is the sunrise on Mount Kelimutu. The best time to start the journey from Moni to Kelimutu is at 03:30 to catch a glimpse of the beautiful sunrise.

As you climb, you will see beautiful pine trees and the sunrise in the background. There are also ferns, Casuarina plants, redwood trees, and edelweiss flowers.

You must purchase an entrance ticket in advance to enter Kelimutu National Park. The entrance fee for Indonesians is 20 thousand rupiahs. Meanwhile, foreign tourists have to pay 150 thousand rupiahs.

Village rituals in Moni

Besides the beautiful natural scenery that Moni has to offer, you can also witness the ritual events carried out by its residents every month. Tu Tau , a harvest ritual performed in October, January, or February, is one of the traditional Lio rituals still practiced today.

There is also Nai Keu , or Coconut Picking around February (especially between March, June, September, and December for coconut harvesting). Also, there are the Gaga Jala rituals, the street cleaning rituals, Wari Pare , and the rice drying rituals in April and May.

Around September or October, there is also the Wa’u Tosa or rice milling ritual. Around October, there is also Nggera Kibi , a ritual for cleaning rice barns.

In conclusion, if you want to experience a clear and beautiful sunrise with pine trees around you, Moni Village would make an ideal place to visit.

Is Moni Island the Best Beach Escape near Athens?

Where is moni island, how to visit moni island from athens, moni beach bar & beyond, how to spend one day on moni, what to take with you on moni, how to get to moni from aegina, how to get to moni island from agistri, moni island photos.

While the beaches aren’t up to par with some of the best Cretan beaches such as Agia Marina and Balos, there’s one beach in Aegina worth visiting.

This beach is on Moni Island, a small, rocky, uninhabited islet surrounded by the deep blue waters of the Saronic Gulf.

It may not be the best beach escape near Athens, but Moni is surely magic.

To me, Moni was the first beach by a forest, on an uninhabited island, where wild peacocks and deer roam around freely.

moni island secret beach

The colorful Moni Island, with emerald waters and pine trees. Can you feel the scent?

Moni is an islet close to the southwestern shore of Aegina island.

The islet sits between Aegina and Agistri. It contributes to the magnificent sunset scenery that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to Aegina each year.

Moni island belongs to the municipality of Aegina and it is a wild territory with an organized beach like no other in this area.

Coming from Aegina, all you need to get to Moni is to take a water taxi from either Perdika or Aegina Town. Boats depart every 30 minutes or so. Make sure you check the current schedules before you plan your day.

If you’re in Athens and you fancy a visit to Moni, check out this private cruise that departs from Glyfada in Athens and takes you to Hydra, Aegina, Agistri, Poros and Moni.

As you arrive by boat, the Moni beach bar is the first thing you come across. Sunbeds and umbrellas are scattered all over around the bar, on the sandy beach, on the neighboring rocks and even under the pine trees.

There’s no need to sit on the Moni island beach, if you don’t want to. You can find a spot somewhere on its shores, where the water is crystal clear and there are barely any other people.

The pine trees area starts just behind the bar. You can take the narrow paths to the other side of the islet or to the top of the hill. Wild peacocks and deer roam around freely. They don’t fear humans, so you’ll have the opportunity to take some great shots.

Peacocks like shadow. This makes them hard to photograph.

Peafowl in the Shadow

This one has beautiful eyes

If you go to Moni Island in high-season, you may need to climb a little to meet the deer, but the birds would always come very close to the beach bar.

Get there early and grab a sunbed and a Greek frappe. Sip your drink while watching the boats bringing in dozens of visitors.

Once you get hot from the sun, go for a swim in the bay by the sandy beach. Get your snorkel with you. If you are a good swimmer, you can follow along the rocky coast line to your left.

Have an early lunch or a late breakfast. I recommend the refreshing Greek salad, but there are also other food options.

Now it’s time to put on your walking shoes, grab your camera and head over to the top of the island.

Just follow the trails through the pine trees and take frequent breaks to admire the breathtaking scenery that unfolds in front of you whenever you take a turn.

secret cove

If you don’t feel like getting all the way to the top, you can descend to the cove on the opposite side of the sandy beach. That’s the perfect spot to sunbathe and to swim without having to put up with the crowds.

The swimming suit, the snorkel and some money are a must. If you don’t want to eat at the beach bar, you’ll also need to bring sandwiches and drinking water. Also, bring your smartphone or a photo camera. The Moni island scenery is simply amazing.

The white boats and yachts contrast with the countless shades of deep blue, emerald and turquoise of the waters. This is Greece at its best and you won’t be able to take your eyes off this heaven-like scenery.

There’s easy access into the turquoise waters from the sandy beach area. However, the other coves and beaches are rocky, so you’ll want to wear water shoes. If you want to hike to the top of the island, you’ll need to wear hiking sandals or hiking shoes.

Drinkable water is another thing you may want to take with you on Moni. You can get ice cold water from the beach bar, but if you want to save some time by not having to do the line, get one small bottle of water with you.

You can get there by water taxi or by private boat from Perdika. The tours take about 10 minutes. The boats can take about 20 people and they go back and forth all day long.

During summer there’s also a water taxi to Moni from Aegina Town. You’ll find more info in the harbor.

This water travel takes about 15 minutes. Tickets are both ways and you need to pick a return time. Should you want to change this time or to return to Perdika instead, you’ll need to talk to the water taxi managers on Moni.

There’s no direct way to go to Moni island from Agistri, unless you have your own boat or you take a private day cruise.

If you plan a Saronic islands hopping adventure, remember that Aegina ferries don’t stop on Moni, either, so you can’t include it in your itinerary.

However, if you want to enjoy a good swim, relaxing beach time and a hike amongst pine trees, wild peacocks and deer, jump on a water taxi to Moni as early in the day as possible and take the last boat of the day back to Perdika or to Aegina Town.

If you decide to go to Moni island, make sure you wear some good walking shoes. You”ll want to climb to the top of the island to take some photos of the lovely surroundings, Aegina, Peloponnese, etc.

Here are a few photos to make you want to get to Moni during your next trip to Greece.

If you are planning to travel to the island of Flores in Indonesia then this is the blog for you.

While many come to Flores to visit the Komodo National Park and see Komodo dragons in the wild (we have a detailed blog on how to visit Komodo Islands here ), the island of Flores has so much more to offer.

All you need is just over a week to see the highlights, and it can all be done on a budget and with public transport.

Day 6 Bajawa

Day 7 Bajawa to Moni (6.30 am bus to Moni) Kalimutu

This is a fast-paced itinerary, but if you have an extra 3 days, you can stop in Moni (Kalimutu Lakes) for 2 days and then continue to Maumere for some beach time before flying out on day 10.

There are flights from Ende or Maumere to Labuan Bajo or even Kupang, from where you can connect to another flight. Check out the best flight deals on Skyscanner .

The Flores Itinerary on a Map & Where is Flores Indonesia?

Flores Island is located in the volcanic belt that stretches from Sumatra to Java, and Bali until the Banda sea. It is part of what is known as East Nusa Tenggara.  Flores is easy to reach from Bali or Java in Indonesia by plane. See the map below to view exactly where is Flores Indonesia.

Where is Flores in Indonesia on the map

Our itinerary for Flores in Indonesia on the map. You can continue all the way to Maumere to make the itinerary slow-paced or longer if you wish.

Flores Itinerary

Day 1 – Day 3 Labuan Bajo & Komodo National Park

Explore Komodo National Park and Spot the Legendary Komodo Dragons

One of the top draws to the island of Flores is a visit to Komodo National Park. Home to some of the world’s most unique wildlife, including Komodo dragons, you can view these enormous creatures in their natural habitat whilst taking in the stunning tropical surroundings.

The view of Padar Island in Komodo National Park

Your Komodo Island tour can be organised from Labuan Bajo or pre-book your trip online.

We recommend spending the 2 days in the park on an overnight boat trip. This will allow you to see the best of the park.

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Komodo Island

Essentially, you will stay 1 night in Labuan Bajo, then do an overnight trip to Komodo (1 night) and 1 night back in Labuan Bajo after it.

If you choose to go with the one-day tour to Komodo Island instead of the overnight trip , you can move on to Ruteng earlier and use the extra night in Kalimutu.

We stayed at Danke Lo dge, located outside of the main town, but the staff was super helpful and happy to drive us and pick us up at any time (complimentary service). We booked our overnight trip to Komodo and returned to sleep here before heading off to Ruteng the following morning.

Labuan Bajo is a nice little town with a few great places for coffee and food.

We booked our bus with Gunung Mas Bus Company, which operates modern medium-sized buses with air-conditioning. They also pick you up at your hotel in Labuan Bajo, so it’s very convenient.

We booked the 8 a.m. bus to Ruteng; the cost was 120,000 IDR (8 USD) per person, and the journey time was 4 hours. They dropped us at our guesthouse.

Of course, there are cheaper ways to travel via public transport in Flores, such as bemo (a little minibus, quite squashy when they fill up) or shared cars. We highly recommend paying that little bit extra to travel with Gunung Mas; it was very comfortable, not to mention reliable vehicles, too.

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Labuan Baja

Day 4 Ruteng

Visit Ruteng, the Heart of Flores’ Ancient Culture in its Traditional Villages and Spider Web Rice Fields

Visit the small mountain town of Ruteng, located in the central part of Flores. If you wish to visit one of the most famous traditional villages, Wae Rebo, you can do so from here on your free day or pre-book it from Labuan Bajo as an overnight tour.

Wae Rebo can be visited for a day; there is a fee for lunch or an overnight stay, which costs 325,000 IDR per person for sleep and meals. Please note you will sleep in one big hut with very basic facilities: no electricity or internet.

If you go to Wae Rebo and stay overnight, you must add the extra night to this itinerary. Getting here independently on public transport is complex, and it would essentially take 3 days, so it is best to arrange transport from Labuan Bajo and then get a drop-off at Bajawa (it should cost around 2,500,000 IDR from Labuan Bajo)

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Wae Rebo

You can visit other traditional villages near Ruteng; the closest one in Ruteng is Ruteng Puu Traditional Village (65,000 IDR pp entry fee as of Feb 2023). It’s an easy ride on a motorbike to reach Ruteng Puu Traditional Village.

We visited the local market; seeing the Spider Web Rice Fields was highlighted. We rented a motorbike (100,000 IDR) for the day from our guesthouse.

It takes about 30 minutes to get to the Spider Web Rice Fields, and you can either stop at the viewpoint, the location is here on Google Maps, and you pay a small fee. Or, like us, you could ride a little further and stop at this little cafe overlooking the rice paddies for coffee or Bakso soup for lunch.

Lunch at Spider Web Rice Fields Island Flores in Indonesia

A great place to eat in Ruteng is the Chacha guesthouse next to the bus station. We came to book our bus to Bajawa at the Gunung Mas bus station/ticket office and had a delicious lunch at Chacha.

The other great travellers’ meeting point is Kopi Mane in town. Great coffee and good food.

Day 5 – 6 Bajawa

Discover the stunning beauty of Bajawa from traditional villages, hot springs, and views of nearby volcanoes

No other attraction will give you a better insight into the traditional culture of Bajawa than the Bena Traditional Village. Walk around this ancient village and admire the traditional houses built with thatched roofs, stone foundations, and ancient burials.

Bena Traditional Village Flores in Indonesia

You can hire a motorcycle or a driver with a car to get here. It will take about 30 minutes to get here, with amazing views of the nearby volcanoes. The roads to Bena Village are in great condition, and we found the motorcycle ride here relatively easy.

The entrance was 25,000 IDR per person, and we asked one of the young boys to show us around the village as he spoke English.

Stunning views of the volcano near Bajawa

We then continued to the Manulalu Lookout, where you can enjoy coffee or lunch. The restaurant here provides panoramic views of the natural beauty below, from lush tropical forests to the smell of nearby volcanic hot springs.

You can then visit the Malanage hot springs. The thermal water flow bubbles up from the ground at 43°C and is naturally stimulating – it’s also believed to have numerous health benefits.

Another great place to stop is the Wolobobo Viewpoint.

This viewpoint offers 360-degree views of the hills, mountains, and valleys that make up Bajawa’s beautiful scenery. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Inerie Mountain!

We stayed at Cinnamon Guesthouse in Bajawa and enjoyed the food at Maibeth Restaurant, conveniently located just across the road to the left. The owner of the guesthouse, Johannes, helped us book the early bus to Moni the following morning at 6.30 a.m.

It was not the Gunung Mas bus but a standard small bus, so there was no AC, and it stopped along the way a lot, but it got us to Moni in 6.5 hours. The price for this journey was 120,000 IDR per person.

Day 7 Moni & Kelimutu

Travel to Kelimutu and See its Three Coloured Lakes

Also known as the ‘Three Colors Lakes of Mt. Kelimutu’, these three lakes are situated at the summit of this majestic mountain.

The view is beyond beautiful, and you’ll be awe-struck by the dramatic landscape before you, especially when the first morning rays hit the blue, turquoise, and brown lakes!

To get to Kelimutu Lakes, you will need to first get to the town of Moni. The town caters to tourists and has a few guesthouses/hotels.

We stayed at Joseph Lodge , which was lovely but about a 10-15 minute walk into town. Mahoni Lodge or the Moon Cafe are the best places to eat.

We enjoyed a fantastic tofu curry with rice at Moon Cafe for 35,000 IDR. The portion was very generous, and it was one of the best meals we ate whilst travelling in Flores.

Our place in Mini - Joseph Lodge

How to get to the Kalimutu Lakes:

Most visitors tend to do the sunrise at Kalimutu Lakes, which means getting up at 4-4.30 am to drive up to the top (about 30 30-minute drive). You will have to pay the entrance fee (150,000 IDR pp) and walk another 20-30 minutes. Here you wait for sunrise.

Of course, you may want to opt out to get there a little bit later, just after 7-8 am to still enjoy the views before the day’s heat.

Kelimutu Lakes in Flores

How much does it cost to get to Kelimutu:

You can hire a motorcycle for 100,000 IDR or a motorcycle with a driver for 125,000 IDR. Or if it is 2 or 3 of you, a driver with a car for about 300,000 – 350,000 IDR roundtrip per car.

Then, it is time to return to Ende for your flight out. We recommend flagging down a shared car, bus, or minivan passing by that is heading toward Ende. A seat in a shared car from Moni is approx 50,000 IDR per person, and the journey time is roughly 1.5 – 2 hours.

Be prepared for a stunning drive to Ende, with towering waterfalls and lush green rainforests everywhere!

The town Ende in Flores

Alternatively, if you have an extra 3 days, we recommend staying an extra night in Moni to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and continue onto Maumere for a day on the beach. The journey time is 3.5 hours to Maumere from Moni.

American electronic music duo "Thievery Corporation" will be in action on July 10.

Thessaloniki’s Summer of Concerts: The Moni Lazariston 2024 Festival

The moni lazariston festival returns to thessaloniki this summer, boasting a packed program of concerts that span a wide range of musical genres..

Amber Charmei | June 6th, 2024

Thessaloniki’s famously good concert and nightlife scene has long made it a favorite destination for culture aficionados, with shows all throughout the year. This summer will be one of the fullest ever – the 2024 Moni Lazariston Festival is packed with close to fifty concerts from June through September (there’s a pause from late July through mid-August).

The Moni Lazariston (Lazaristes Monastery) is in the city, easy to reach by bus or a short taxi ride from Aristotelous Square . The outdoor venue is at a former monastery built by Catholic monks of Paris’ church of St. Lazare, and was active until the Balkan Wars of the early 20th century. Now the restored complex houses the city’s favorite outdoor venue, as well as an indoor theater and the MOMus Museum of Modern Art , which is also worth making time for – it’s home to the Costakis collection , one of the finest collections of Russian avant-garde art outside of Greece.

The program includes international touring bands and popular Greek bands, both in a span of genres. For an up-to-date program (at this writing, shows are still being added), please visit the Moni Lazariston Festival’s events page on Facebook.

Here are some of the highlights:

June 5th: konstantinos vita .

The composer and singer is well known for his pioneering electro-pop work with Stereo Nova . Spanning genres from house, disco, and trip hop , he’ll be playing pieces from his past through more recent works from his 2023 album.

June 12th: Nouvelle Vague

Nouvelle Vague and Thessaloniki have a long and close relationship. Taking their name from the French cinema movement, Marc Colin and the late Olivier Lebaux with long-time and new collaborators reinvent underground ‘70’s and ‘80’s punk through new wave via bossa nova . Songs from Bauhaus, the Dead Kennedys, Depeche Mode, the Buzzcocks, Tuxedomoon, and many others. They’ll also be playing songs from their new album “Should I Stay or Should I Go” named for the Clash original interpreted by vocalist Alonya.

Les Au Revoir will be opening.

This is a free show – a summer party.

June 15th – Archive

It’s been five years since their captivating show at the Herodes Atticus Theater, Londoners Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths put out a new record in the meantime – “Call to Arms and Angels” (the one with “We Are the Same”) – the latest in a nearly 30 year career that spans avant-garde, post-rock, progressive rock trip-hop and electronica . There are plenty of hits among them, including “You Make Me Feel,” “Bullets,” “Lights,” and the always timely “So……. anyway.”

June 17th – Marina Satti

Singer and song-writer Satti’s blend of pop with Greek, Balkan, and Arabic influences hits all the right notes. Thanks in part to her hit “Zari” – Greece’s entry for this year’s Eurovision song contest – this show is already sold-out. More popular tracks include “Lalalala,” Mixtape,” and “Tucutum.”

June 21st – Tzamal

Thessaloniki local and underground rap artist Tzamal started out in the late ‘90s with Voreia Asteria (the north stars) – initially a graffiti group, then a music group of the same name. His recent solo albums are “I Favela” and “I Coupa tou Iouda.” He’ll be presenting his new record “Terra Dannata.”

June 26th – Ara Malikian

The Lebanese-born virtuoso with Armenian roots takes the violin somewhere it doesn’t usually go. You might know him best for “Misirlou” – the Rebetiko song first done by Michali Patrino in Athens in 1927. Surf guitarist Dick Dale popularized it in the ‘60s (the “Pump It” Pulp Fiction version).  Malakian also interprets a huge span of works – from Bach and Paganini to Bowie, Björk, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, and Hendrix . Malakian has played some great stages – the Royal Albert, Carnegie Hall, and the Tempodrom among them.

June 29th (sold out) and June 30th (extra date added) – Dire Straits Legacy

Dire Straits Legacy is a project including former members of British rock legends Dire Straits , including keyboardist Alan Clark, saxophonist Mel Collins, guitarist Phil Palmer, drummer Danny Cummings, and guitarist and vocalist Marco Caviglia (a master of Knopfler’s unique guitar technique) . Also playing will be Trevor Horn (of Yes) and keyboardist Primiano di Biase. A great experience of the original band’s singular rock excellence and their classic songs. This show is part of their world tour.

July 10th – Thievery Corporation

This is one of the most anticipated shows on the calendar – the (Washington) DC duet is the gold standard in electronic music for many . In the mid-’90s, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton bonded over a shared love of club life and good music – dub, jazz, and ‘60s bossa nova. They released the now classic “Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi” in 1996, following up with “Mirror Conspiracy” (2000), “Richest Man In Babylon” (2002), “The Cosmic Game” (2005), “Culture of Fear” (2011) and the more recent “The Temple of I & I” (2017) and “Treasures From the Temple” (2018). Memorable songs include “Lebanese Blond,” “Warning Shots,” and “Richest Man in Babylon.”

Iota Phi will be opening the show.

July 12th – Steel Panther live in Greece with Gus G., featuring Ronnie Romero

Such committed, camp Glam Metal like this could only come from LA. Forming in 2000 under the name Metal Shop, with their humorous (sometimes profane) lyrics, strong live show that combines stand-up and covers of well-known ‘80s hits, they quickly gained popularity on the Sunset strip, playing at the Viper Room and the Key Club. A decade later they toured with Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe , and recorded some albums in the meantime (five to date). This show is part of their “On the Prowl” world tour.

Sharing the show will be Gus G. of Firewind , whose album “Stand United” was just released. Gus will be on stage with renowned lyricist and vocalist Ronnie Romero, of Rainbow and other projects. Gus G. – known for his amazing dexterity – was Ozzy Ozbourne’s lead guitarist from 2009 to 2017 and is recorded on his 2010 album “Scream” is among the most internationally respected metal guitarists playing today . Thessaloniki is his hometown; it’s always great to see him here.

August/September

Many shows are still being added for the summer’s second half – the festival’s events page will keep you up to date.

Frequently asked questions

  • The trick to having an amazing flight experience is to be prepared. So, let’s start with the basics: passport, boarding pass, cash and daily medications. Next, bring on board items that’ll help keep you occupied, like some electronic gadgets or a good read. It’s also wise to bring your chargers, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of headphones. Last but not least, be sure to chuck in toiletries like a toothbrush, facial wipes and a spare set of clothes.
  • While the list of banned items can differ between airlines, the general rule of thumb is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes knives, scissors, fireworks and fuel. Sporting equipment like golf clubs, and items that could injure passengers, such as guns and swords, aren’t allowed in the cabin either.
  • The goal here is to be as comfortable as possible. Don layers of breathable clothing and take a sweater in case it gets cold in the cabin. Always go with flat, slightly roomy shoes as your feet may swell a little during the journey. Leave the high heels and heavy hiking boots in your checked baggage.
  • Caused by sustained periods of immobility, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect passengers on long-haul flights. The good news is there are ways to reduce your risk of developing it. Keep your fluids up, get up and walk around the cabin as often as you can and wear compression tights or socks.
  • Your travel documents and passport will need to be inspected by airport security. Keep them within easy reach so you don’t hold up the queue.
  • The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They’ll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
  • Electronic devices like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don’t worry though, you’ll be back online in no time.
  • Traveling with your favorite hand cream? No problem. As long as it’s in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it’s stored in a zip-close bag, you can bring it with you in your carry-on.
  • There’s a possibility that you’ll be asked to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a good idea.
  • Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, put them in your checked suitcase. They won’t be allowed in the cabin.
