Discover the Wildlife of Värmland

In the search for the king of the forest, as the biggest mammal of Sweden it carries its name with pride. With an estimate of between 350-400 thousand individuals, the first thing that should pop into your mind is the moose. We believe the most beautiful way to find, see and enjoy the moose, is in it’s natural habitat doing what it does best and that’s simply being a moose! We will take you on a Safari searching for these kings and queens (with maybe some princes or princesses.) finding them in their natural habitat.

Spoken languages: English, Dutch. Group size: Minimum of 2 adults, Maximum of 4 people (2 adults, 2 children)

Water, coffee and tea included. There will be a little break to enjoy some snacks, softdrinks or a beer.

The moose safari takes place around Arvika. Arvika is known for its white moose. However, they're super rare which makes them even harder to find them, but we might be lucky!

What can you expect on a Moose Safari?

You can expect an active and informative evening with lots of info about Värmlands fauna and flora. There is plenty to see and find, so you will definitely be pointed out a lot of information about the animals, including tracks or other markings and the wild flora that surrounds you. The Safari will be in a 4×4 vehicle as well as some walking and we will have a little break with some drinks and snacks in a beautiful setting.

What to bring on a Moose Safari?

The only thing you have to bring on the safari is a good mood, suitable clothing and your camera or telephone to take photographs.

What to wear on a Moose Safari?

Moose have a very bad eyesight but they can see the difference between bright and natural colours so we would recommend natural coloured clothing. A raincoat is good for rainy days and for cold evenings we recommend a warmer/insulated jacket or vest. Take shoes or boots so you can walk comfortably for longer periods, on a variety of surfaces including the wet ones since we are in Sweden! Long pants are also advised because of the insects, nettles and higher grasses we are going to cover. Also a cap or maybe even a beanie for the colder evenings will be perfect for keeping your head warm and keeping insects out of your hair. Due to the lack of eyesight moose can smell very well so we recommend no heavy smelling perfumes, as the wind in their direction can easily scare them away!

moose safari arvika

What is included in the Moose Safari?

The tour will include entertainment for young and old, with lots of information and fun. We will provide binoculars and some field and pocket guides. Water, coffee and tea are included. There will be a little break to enjoy some snacks and softdrinks or beers in a beautiful setting (also included). We have a camera with a zoomlens so if you are interested in having some photographs we can always send them to you afterwards.

What other animals can we spot on the Moose Safari?

Moose (of-course), Red deer, Fallow deer, Roe deer, Wild Boar, Wolf, Lynx, Fox, European Badger, Squirrel and other different kinds of small mammals. Different kinds of snakes and other smaller reptiles. Lots of birds (different species) and even a beaver on the waterside is a possibility.

When does the Moose Safari takes place?

The safari takes place in the months May, June, July, August and September due to long evenings and enough daylight to see the animals and photograph them. Safari’s take place in the evening and the duration will be around 4 hours , including the break. Starting and ending times vary in the months due to different times of sunset.

Dot,dot,dot.

We do our best to provide you with excellent sightings of moose, but bear in mind that moose, and all other animals live in total freedom in our area so we can not guarantee that you will see one. On all safaris you will most likely encounter a few animals in the list above, but you will have a fun and informative evening regardless!

Spoken languages: English, Dutch.

Group size: Minimum 2 adults, Maximum 4 people (2 adults, 2 children)

Price: Adults 995 SEK p.p. Children 495 SEK p.p. (children 3 through 12 years old).

“Great dive into a fairy world filled with moose.”

Thanks James for this really uncommon experience! I always dreamed of an encounter with such animals. Visiting your park is one of the best decisions I ever made. Your explanations were clear, interesting, you’re not only interested in moose, you seem really passionate, and this passion is contagious ! Now the second part of the visit : the encounter! Houdini, Annika and ohgodiforgotthemalesname are such great animals ! they seem so peaceful, and we can tell they’re happy and treated with respect. It’s really an uncanny situation to be so close to these happy folks, I recommend the trip to everyone ! Totally worth it !

“Best Swedish Experience.”

We just got home from a visit to Mooseworld in Varmland. We had a fantastic time with the guides and the moose, we learned so much about the king of the forest, and the nature they live in. The tour guides James and Per were very passionate, and we could truly feel their love for the big animal. They gave us the best personal and informative experience. We got much more than just seeing the moose, and the chance to get close to a moose in their natural habitat was really amazing. We will definitely recommend this to everyone, even with our 3 year old with us it was no problem, and he even got to feed one of the moose.

“We learned a lot about Moose and their ecosystem”

Because we thought that seeing a moose from up close would be nice for the kids we took the tour at the moose farm. The guide warned us that the first part could be boring, as there wasn’t that much to see, but it was actually a very inetersting experience. We learned a lot about wildlife in that area and how to look for it. The fact that the guide was very elabirate made it possible for us to translate for the children, since they don’t speak english, and that way they could anjoy the tour also. After that we visited the group of moose in the park and it was very nice to touch them. Even though we had to be careful ( they aren’t that domesticated), we got a good look and again a very thorough explanation. Everything you always wanted to know about moose and more…

“Great place!”

Just loved the moose as well as the great guys running it. Great to feed them and get up close and personal. The big male is just growing his new antlers. .amazing to feel how warm and hard they are. Kings of the forest indeed!

“A must if you are in Sweden”

The Moose Park is an amazing place which has much to offer even in the cold and dark winter days. A place recommend for everyone who has a desire to see the King of the forest and its magnificence! And James is a person who not only explains in detail but who also really loves the animals!

“Informative and fun experience”

The employees of the park knew a lot to tell about moose and conveyed this knowledge very well with funny stories and examples (especially Jamey). It was a great “tour” of about 2 hours consisting of 2 parts: 1st some background info and 2nd to get into the park and come very close to the animals and even pet them. Recommended!

Amazing Nature Scandinavia

Moose safari

moose safari arvika

Moose are wild animals and belong in the forest; not in a zoo or on a farm. This moose safari will show you the moose’s natural habitat. Your guide will tell you all about these impressive animals and their environment.

You will do this!

  • Learn to track moose
  • Hike through a forest covered in moss and blueberry bushes
  • Enjoy an outdoor meal overlooking a secluded lake
  • Chance to see moose, roe deer, fox, cranes, owls and for the lucky few even wolf or lynx

After meeting your guide you will travel by minivan to one of the best moose spotting areas in Sweden. At the campfire you will get better acquainted with the rest of the small group. Your view is that of a stunning lake where herons and golden eagles are often seen.

You are now deep in the taiga, where countless wild animals live such as moose, roe deer, wild boars, hares, foxes, badgers, wolves and even lynxes.

Before dinner you will be exploring the area on foot. You will hike through ancient woodlands with its forest floors completely covered in mosses of various shades of green, and where many types of berry bushes grow. During the walk your guide will make several stops and explain more about moose, such as why these amazing animals are so significant to the taiga ecosystem.

After the walk you will return to the campfire and enjoy a meal consisting of a vegetarian wrap filled with organically grown vegetables, a locally produced sausage, a healthy berry drink or a bottle of local beer, organic coffee or tea and a delicious chocolate cookie.

Later that evening you will travel through the forest by minivan looking for moose and other wildlife. The van will always remain at a respectable distance so as not to scare the animals. When opportunity knocks you will get off for a closer view and better photo opportunities.

Please be aware that moose are shy animals and afraid of human beings. You will set out to look for them in their natural habitat where they are not receiving any extra food from humans.

You will return to the starting point in the darkness, better understanding and respecting moose and other animals you got to observe.

Practical information

Period: From May to September. The largest number of moose is usually spotted in May, when they come out of the forest to feast on the fields after the long winter. June and July offer the best lighting conditions for photography. In August and September the antlers are fully grown and many moose are seen due to the approaching rutting season. Please be aware that September is usually too dark to take good photographs.

Time: The start and end time of this 5 hour moose safari depends on the season:

  • From mid-May to mid-July: 19:00 – 24:00
  • From mid-July to late July: 18:30 – 23:30
  • From early August to mid-August: 17:30 – 22:30
  • From mid-August to late August: 17:00 – 22:00
  • From early to late September: 16:00 – 21:00

Meeting point: Skinnskatteberg (Västmanland); the exact location will be announced when booking.

Accessibility: This safari is accessible to everyone over 8 years old and able to walk through the forest without difficulty. You will be hiking at a gentle pace for about an hour and make several stops. Should the walk prove to be too demanding, you can always wait by the campfire. After the others have returned, you will go on a moose spotting trip by minivan.

Price: 1750 SEK / person: the price includes tour by minivan with English speaking guide and an outdoor evening meal. The price for children up to 15 years of age is 1.500 SEK.

To bring along: I recommend suitable clothing (layers, preferably a t-shirt or sweater with long sleeves and long pants as protection against mosquitoes), suitable waterproof shoes, camera or smartphone, rain proof clothing, insect repellent, bottle of water and in case of warm and sunny weather headgear and sunscreen. Don’t forget your patience.

Booking: Contact me via e-mail [email protected] or by phone +46 (0)70 230 68 70

This activity takes place in the wild, meaning that although you will be visiting the location where these animals live, no guarantees can be given as to what you will get to see or photograph.

Baby moose trapped in a lake is saved by alaska man and police as its worried mom watches.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska man and two police officers have joined forces to rescue a baby moose that got stuck between a floatplane and a dock in a lake. The Homer Police Department says actions of the three men saved the calf from “a sure demise.” Spencer Warren works for a wilderness guiding service. He arrived Friday to prepare the floatplane when he discovered the calf trapped. Mama moose was nearby with another baby and wouldn’t let him get close to the trapped calf. A police officer eventually used a cruiser to block the mama moose, and Warren and the other officer lifted the exhausted calf to safety.

7 Best Moscow Moose Recipes

Nov 30, 2019

In this post, we reveal the best recipes on the internet for the Moscow Moose, one of the most legendary variations of the classic Moscow Mule. This great variation packs a punch and will be sure to impress your friends. Let's get started!

Introduction

The Moscow Moose cocktail is one of the most notable spin-offs of the traditional Moscow Mule drink. It melds the fresh flavors of the warmer months with the dark flavors of the cold ones. If you're wondering, "what is a Moscow Moose?", the answer is that it's a simple cocktail with a classic mix of ginger beer, lime, vodka, and rye. Rye is a popular cocktail ingredient that brings a sharp spiciness to the mix. This cocktail is super easy to make at home and ridiculously refreshing.

The Moscow Moose itself has several varieties, all of which pack a punch. Some use rye as an addition to the original recipe, while others replace vodka with it. Whichever way you go, the cocktail gives you something new to try if you’re looking for a way to spice up your cocktail.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the following:

What’s in a Moscow Moose?

  • When is the best time for a Moscow Moose cocktail?
  • Moscow Moose cocktail recipes
  • The ginger beer in your Moscow Moose
  • Health benefits of ginger beer
  • Ginger beer recipe

This cocktail contains the basic ingredients of a Moscow Mule, which are ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice. What makes it a Moscow Moose is the addition of rye whiskey. The combination of ginger and rye makes a spicy and zesty drink. Rye has a peppery taste, one that’s a bit too strong and which is slightly balanced by the hint of sweetness found in ginger. Then there’s the bitterness in lime, which adds a citric twist to the cocktail.

When is the Best Time for a Moscow Moose Cocktail?

Because of its flavor, a rye cocktail is great for cold weather days. You can also drink it on a hot sunny day or anytime you want a distinct flavor in your drink. Rye is savory enough, and you’ll always be able to taste it through the lime and ginger.

Moscow Moose Cocktail Recipes

Here are some of the best Moose drink recipes which strike that elusive balance between strong, spicy, and sweet. Even better, they’re pretty easy to prepare and don’t require much in terms of ingredients. They are all utterly spectacular in their simplicity.

The Classic Moscow Moose

Prep Time: 5 minutes Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 4 oz. ginger beer
  • ½ tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp amaretto
  • Lemon twist

Instructions:

  • Place ice in a glass, then add whiskey, lemon juice, and amaretto.
  • Top with ginger beer and give a quick stir.
  • Garnish with the lemon twist and enjoy.

Canadian Moscow Moose Cocktail

Prep Time: 5 minutes Serves: 2

  • 3 oz. Canadian rye whiskey
  • 1 oz. haskap liqueur
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 0z. maple syrup
  • 1 tsp ginger beer
  • 4 dashes apple bitters
  • Put crushed ice in a mug, then add the rye whiskey, lime, haskap liqueur, and maple syrup. Top with ginger beer.
  • Add bitters.
  • Garnish with ginger and serve.

Apple bitters give this Canadian drink a flavor profile different from all the other varieties of Moscow Moose cocktail. They also enhance the aromas in the cocktail, exposing hints of lime, whiskey, liqueur, and ginger. Apple bitters balance out the sourness in the rye whiskey and lime, which is suitable for you if you would love a cocktail that’s a little bit lightly flavored. This effect is further improved upon by the maple syrup, which gives the cocktail a sugary twist.

The haskap liqueur is made from haskap berries and has a sweetness you would find in a mix of raspberries, blackcurrants, and blueberries. This combination of ingredients makes the cocktail an excellent choice for anyone with a sweet tooth who would like to blunt the bitter taste of the moose drink.

Whiskey Ginger Moscow Moose Cocktail

  • 6 oz. ginger ale
  • 0.5 oz. lime juice
  • Put ice in a copper mug, then pour in the whiskey.
  • Add the ginger ale and lime juice.
  • Garnish with lime wedge.

Ginger ale is not as strong as ginger beer, but it has a refreshing citrusy taste. When mixed with whiskey and lime juice, a spicy-sweet flavor is created.

Birch Beer Moscow Moose

  • A sprig of mint
  • 2 blueberries
  • 1 lime wedge
  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 2 tbsp. birch beer
  • Muddle the lime, mint, and blueberries together in a copper mug.
  • Pour in the vodka and birch beer, then mix.
  • Add ice and enjoy.

Birch beer is a type of carbonated soft drink that usually includes birch bark and herbal extracts. So, if you love adding a bit of herbal spice to your drink, this is the cocktail for you. In this recipe, the red birch beer adds taste as well as color, making the drink all the more irresistible. The blueberries bring a sweet tartness into the mix and, the fresher they are, the more juice they produce. This makes for an even richer cocktail.

Not only will you be making your Moscow Moose more flavorful with these berries, but you’ll also be reaping their health benefits. Blueberries are full of antioxidants that boost the body’s immunity by fighting free radicals, which cause cell damage. This mix is quite refreshing because of the mint. When mint is muddled, it releases an oil extract with a sweet, aromatic flavor. Freshness is vital when it comes to adding mint to your alcoholic drink, as it will release more of its juice and scent.

Moscow Moose Drink with Soda Water

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 1/8 oz. soda water
  • 1 oz. ginger beer
  • 1 lime wedge
  • 1 lemon wedge
  • Sprig of mint
  • Fill a mug with crushed ice.
  • Stir vodka, lemon, ginger beer, and soda water then pour into the mug.
  • Garnish with mint and lime wedge.

Soda water has a slightly sour taste, with a note of citrus. It’s suitable for bringing subtle flavor changes to this cocktail, and also adds fizziness.

Amaretto Moscow Moose Cocktail

hand holding copper cup filled with crushed ice and mint leaves

  • 1 tsp. amaretto
  • I tbsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 2 oz. ginger beer
  • Pour ice in a glass, then add rye.
  • Mix in lemon juice and amaretto.
  • Top with ginger beer and stir to combine.
  • Use lemon twist to garnish.

Amaretto is an Italian liqueur with a sweet taste. Traditionally, bitter almonds are used for flavoring, but there are varieties prepared using peach and apricot stones. Amaretto is used in mixed alcoholic drinks and adds an almond-like flavor. This liqueur blends exceptionally well with several flavorings, among them citrus. If you are interested in trying out Italian-based cocktails, this Amaretto Moscow Moose drink recipe is a good place to start.

Other than being a suitable pairing for the amaretto, lemon juice makes its mark in this mixed drink by adding some sourness. In addition, freshly squeezed lemon juice will do more for your Moose than store-bought varieties, which are less delicious. Also, keep in mind that the longer the citric juice remains in your cocktail, the better-tasting it gets. Its aroma also becomes stronger.

Peppermint Moscow Moose Cocktail

Prep Time: 2 minutes Serves: 1

  • 2 oz. peppermint schnapps
  • 1.25 oz. vodka
  • Pour the peppermint schnapps into a glass.
  • Add the vodka.
  • Serve and enjoy.

If you don’t mind strong cocktails, then this combination of schnapps and vodka has got you covered. With such simple preparation, it's ideal when you're in a hurry or preparing drinks for a large group. The type of schnapps used here has a minty flavor that will take away a bit of edge from the vodka. Note that its minty flavor is more on the intense side, and it also contains a high percentage of alcohol.

The Ginger Beer in Your Moscow Moose

Ginger beer remains an essential ingredient in any variation of the Moscow Mule , including the Moscow Moose drink. Since it’s a common ingredient in all of these recipes, let’s have a look at its benefits and how you can make your own at home.

Health Benefits of Ginger Beer

These are some of the health benefits of ginger beer :

  • Relieves Nausea and Helps in Digestion – Ginger beer aids in the movement of food through the stomach, promoting smooth digestion. Gingerol and shogaol are the active compounds found in ginger, and they relieve stomach irritations. The compounds encourage the production of saliva and bile, both of which are useful in food digestion. Ginger beer also relieves nausea.
  • Anti-bacterial – Ginger root contains anti-bacterial properties that are useful in flushing out fungi and bacteria from the body. When you make ginger beer an essential part of your cocktails, you decrease your need to depend on antibiotics to fight bacterial and fungal infections.
  • Fights Inflammation – Gingerol has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Drinking ginger beer can, therefore, help suppress inflammation associated with conditions such as hepatitis, arthritis, and gastritis.

Ginger Beer Recipe

Prep Time: 3 hours Ready In: 3 days

  • ¼ cup grated ginger root, peeled
  • ½ tsp. cream of tartar
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. dry yeast
  • Combine the ginger, lemon juice, and cream of tartar in a large pot. Add 4 cups of water and bring the mixture to boil.
  • Reduce heat, add sugar, then stir and simmer until it’s fully dissolved. Remove from the heat.
  • Add 40 ounces (5 cups) of water to the pot. Leave it to cool down to 23°c. Add yeast and stir.
  • Cover the pot with a clean cloth or towel, then store away from light in a warm place for 3 hours.
  • Using a strainer to remove bits of ginger, transfer the mixture into a pitcher.
  • Fill into glass bottles, only 2/3 full to allow for fermentation. Leave to ferment for 3 days.
  • Refrigerate to prevent further fermenting, or put in room temperature for more fermentation.

Hiker who couldn't "feel the skin on her legs" after paralyzing bite rescued from mountains in California

Updated on: June 19, 2024 / 4:07 PM EDT / CBS News

A hiker paralyzed by a bite in California's Sierra Nevada mountains last week was safely rescued after she was able to relay her location just before her phone died, officials said.

The woman had taken the Taboose Pass out of the Sierra Nevada's  John Muir Trail after encountering too much snow, and while fetching water from a creek she was bitten by what she thought was a spider, Inyo County Search & Rescue officials said in a social media post .

"Afterwards, she was unable to feel the skin on her legs and could not continue her hike down," rescue officials said. The hiker, who authorities did not identify, managed to call in and relay her coordinates to rescue officials around 6:30 p.m. before her phone battery died.

The county's search and rescue team arrived at the trailhead just before midnight and "slowly walked her down the tricky section of the trail while ensuring her safety with ropes," before transferring her into a wheeled litter the team had stashed in a more stable area of the trail, about a quarter mile away from her location, officials said.

Officials did not give any details about the woman's condition.

"About half of the emergency calls that SAR receives come from a person with a dying phone battery," the department said, urging hikers to carry power banks for phones or satellite messaging devices.

"While we're talking about Taboose Pass trail, we'd like to remind everyone that Taboose, Sawmill, Baxter, and Shepherd Pass Trails are a lot less maintained as the rest of the trails in the Sierra," the department added. "You might encounter very tricky sections and route finding issues – not to mention very steep grades."
