Rafting Testimonial

We had such a great time! Our guide was Nicolette, and she was fantastic. She was so knowledgeable about the park, river, and everything Montana. We weren’t sure what to expect upon arrival, and ended up making the best memories of our trip. I very highly recommend this company & the relaxing raft tour. Make it a priority if you’re visiting Glacier! Will definitely be back!

Great ride! The views were amazing. Connor was our guide and did a great job sharing his knowledge of the route. I actually jumped in the river, and it was quite refreshing! I highly recommend spending time exploring Glacier National Park with Glacier Guides and Montana Raft. They are very professional and make the ride more fun.

Holy cow this place is awesome! Right from the start, everyone was so nice and friendly and fun! Our family headed down the river for the scenic float with our three littles (9, 7 & 3) and my FIL and MIL (who cannot swim and is terrified of water!). We had the best time and our guide Nicolette was super knowledgeable about the river and the area. After the float we stayed for dinner and, let me just tell you, it blew my expectations out of the water! I was expecting to get our main course with a couple sides but they had that PLUS crazy yummy appetizers AND dessert too! I cannot recommend Montana Raft enough! If you have time, do the dinner option. You will not be disappointed!!

— Jacki Kelly

I highly recommend booking with Glacier Guides. We booked white water rafting for 3 guys and had a blast. We felt like the guides did a really great job of demonstrating their expertise on the water and sharing history about the local area. Joe in particular was a great dude. If you’re in town, these guys are the best!

If you’re looking to try white water rafting in glacier (which you should!) Glacier Guides is the place to go! My husband and I were on our honeymoon and this was our first rafting experience, and it could not have been better! James was prepared with experience, knowledge and jokes. We felt very safe with James in charge. He also offered numerous places and hikes in the park for all experience levels. Highly recommend!

Scenic and whitewater raft trips on the Flathead River are an experience that you won’t soon forget. The Middle and North Fork of the Flathead are two of Montana’s wildest rivers and form the southern and western boundaries of Glacier National Park. They are protected as Wild and Scenic rivers ensuring that they will remain free-flowing and untamed. These glacial fed waters rank as some of the cleanest rivers in the world. On these adventure trips, we often see deer, mountain goats, osprey, eagles, beavers, bears, and there are times we even hear howling wolves.

Our experienced guides are friendly, professional, and eager to share the river with you. We have a risk management program that has been recognized as one of the best in the industry, have been running amazing trips for over two decades, and there are more reasons still why you should choose us .

Not exactly what you’re looking for? We are happy to CUSTOMIZE ANY TRIP to give you the experience of a lifetime. We offer many different family-friendly trips: Half Day Whitewater and Scenic Trips, a Full Day Whitewater Adventure w/ Lunch, an Evening Whitewater Dinner, Custom Overnight Rafting Adventure w/ Camping, and Guided Fly Fishing!

Trip Reviews

When can i return, when to go rafting.

The Middle Fork has nearly continuous whitewater for the entirety of the trip. With no dams controlling its flow, the river changes character throughout the summer. Early season, when flows are the highest, is the best time to come if you are looking for a wild ride.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River

Whatever time of year you decide to come, a Middle Fork of the Salmon River rafting trip is an unparalleled wilderness rafting experience. Historic sites, including Native American petroglyphs and more recent mining and homesteading ruins, offer a captivating glimpse into the Middle Fork’s past.

Located in Central Idaho, the Middle Fork is within driving distance of Boise and locations throughout the Pacific Northwest. It can also be reached from airports in Stanley and Salmon, Idaho or Missoula, Montana. Many traveling to the area combine their trip with a scenic drive through the nearby Sawtooth Mountains.

River Rhythm

Early season the river is fast and continuous for the the first 20 of the 100 miles. After that it eases up and gradually builds up again until the last two days which is full of great rapids. In late season, the river gradually gets more difficult each day, ending with the biggest rapids on the last day.

Off the Rafts

Several hot springs offer a relaxing way to cap off a day on the move. Longer hikes to a few beautiful viewpoints are also available for anyone still looking for more action in their day.

Flora & Fauna

Black Hawthorn, Mountain Alder, Cottonwood, Ponderosa Pine. Cutthroat trout, deer, elk, bear, river otter, bald eagles, osprey, Big Horn Sheep, and if we’re super lucky we’ll see mountain goats.

Land Acknowledgement

Our trips on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River travel through the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of the Shoshone Tuka-Deka peoples (Mountain Sheepeaters). In particular, we travel through land ceded in the Treaty of 1879. We recognize current indigenous peoples and those who were removed from their homelands.

We are licensed by the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Licensing Board and operate under special use permit with the Salmon-Challis National Forest . Additionally, we are an equal opportunity provider.

Trip Highlights

  • Soak in the numerous hot springs
  • Pictographs and homesites of the native Sheepeater Tribe
  • Homesteads of early western settlers
  • Jumping rocks
  • World-class rainbow and cutthroat trout fishing (all catch and release)

Quick Facts

  • One of the original 8 designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in 1968
  • Located in the middle of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness
  • Bear Valley Creek and Marsh Creek come together to form the Middle Fork of the Salmon

What an amazing crew

What People Are Saying

“Thank you for making our July 1st family float an experience to remember. With 31 people ranging in age from 6 to 78, you did an amazing job of accomodating every level of excitement and anxiety. The spectacular scenery of the gorge was only enhanced by your expertise and professionalism.  With visitors from Utah, Seattle and Spokane, we were proud to “show off” the beauty and brilliance of rafting in Western Montana. Thank you for making it such a special event.”

"Awesome float. I’ve done a few this summer with different companies and today was by far the best. The guys in the office were great and Craig was our guide and he made us all feel so welcome and comfortable. Super fun day. It went by way too fast. I highly recommend."
"Thank you Yellowstone Raft Co. for a wonderful experience. We had a very good and funny guide in Kevin. My 6 year old son thoroughly enjoyed his first rafting experience - this has opened a whole new world of adventure for him."
"Staff in office and the guides were polite and accommodating with our children. They did not overfill the raft and everyone was able to paddle. Opportunities to jump in the river and have fun on flat stretches. You'll also learn a bit about the landscape."

More About Rafting on the Flathead Rivers

The headwaters of the Flathead River are located in British Columbia and drain the western slope of the Rockie Mountains. The river’s namesake comes from the Flathead Indians who lived in the region and were named so by Lewis and Clark. The majority of the river is protected within the confines of Glacier National Park as well as Bob Marshall and Great Bear Wilderness areas. In 1976, US Congress designated 219 miles of the Flathead River as “National Wild and Scenic.” The Flathead River offers more than 275 miles of river rafting ranging from peaceful Class I float trips to Class III+ whitewater adventures on the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Flathead River.
