How much does the Napa Valley Wine Train cost?

Prices for the Napa Valley Wine Train’s experiences can vary depending on which experience passengers choose. Here are the starting rates for tours, but these will fluctuate.

Does the Napa Valley Wine Train include wine?

Many of the Wine Train’s excursions such as the Vista Dome package and the Legacy Tour include a complimentary welcome glass of house wine or bubbles for guests who are over 21. Their other experiences don’t include wine as part of the ticket, but their menus boast more than 40 wines available for purchase by the glass or bottle. Cocktails, specialty drinks, bottled waters and beers can also be purchased on board throughout the journey.

What passengers can expect on the day of their journey.

Passengers start at the Wine Train station in Downtown Napa, where they can easily park in a spacious lot and check in at the reception desk inside to receive their tickets. They’re welcome to explore the station before the train boards, including their Wine Shop that features rare, boutique wines, or chat with wine educators and relax with a cup of coffee or glass of wine.

Before boarding, Napa Valley Wine Train team members will give an introductory welcome speech about Napa Valley and the train. Once the train arrives, passengers will be called to board based on their seating section.

Aboard the train, guests and their party will be guided by one of their team members to their tables. For the Gourmet Express lunch and dinner packages, passengers will either enjoy their multi-course gourmet meals first and then be led to the nearby lounge car to relax and enjoy the scenic views, or vice versa, depending on whether they booked the early or late seating option.

For tours that include winery visits, guests will be transported to each winery after or in between courses to enjoy exclusive tastings and an in-depth tour of the grounds.

What to Wear on the Napa Wine Train

“Although there’s no dress code for the Wine Train, we encourage passengers to wear attire for a typical day in wine country, leaning more toward dressier than casual,” said Davis. Depending on which experience you book, you may be visiting a winery for a tour and tasting, so comfortable shoes are also recommended. Dinner trains tend to be slightly more formal than lunch. Also, remember to bring an extra layer to make sure you’re warm enough aboard the train.

“Absolutely. The Napa Valley Wine Train is one of the few active historic passenger railroads in the U.S. and offers the chance to experience a modern take on luxury rail travel from the beginning of the 20th century,” said Davis.

“The train transports passengers to a pivotal moment in Napa Valley’s history with its antique Pullman rail cars, which have been faithfully restored with Honduran mahogany paneling, brass accents, etched glass partitions and plush armchairs.”

“The moments of delight along the journey are my favorite,” said Davis. “Things like catching the fog playfully teasing the tops of the mountains while sipping on a glass of wine, catching yourself relaxing enough to truly enjoy intimate time with the ones you love in a way that is hard to find in our busy days or having your expectations exceeded on a dish you are enjoying – because you did not think train food could be that good. These are a few favorites.”

Kids are welcome on several of the Wine Train’s journeys, including lunch and dinner for the Gourmet Express and Vista Dome packages. We also host many exciting holiday events for Thanksgiving, Easter, Fourth of July and more that are unique ways to celebrate with the whole family. Some of the packages have special rates for children. Also, the train’s culinary team can adapt many of our menu items to suit your child’s tastes.

Is there a train from San Francisco to Napa Valley?

No, the Napa Valley Wine Train runs from its Downtown Napa station to St. Helena and back. For San Francisco residents interested in visiting, the Wine Train offers a car-free transportation option that brings guests from San Francisco to Napa Valley via the San Francisco Bay Ferry. 

Is there a best time of year to ride the wine train ?

The Wine Train is a memorable outing year-round with their variety of journeys, but Davis recommends guests visit during the spring. Napa Valley tends to be less busy during these months compared to the summer, and the longer daylight provides the perfect opportunity to see the sun set over world-famous vineyards on their dinner journeys. The weather is also more moderate compared to other seasons.

Napa Valley Wine Train History

According to Davis, the railroad the train runs on was built and operated by Samuel Brannan in 1864 as a tourist railroad to take visiting San Franciscans as they arrived by ferry in south Napa to his resort town Calistoga. In 1885 the Southern Pacific Railroad Company purchased the line and it continued in operation for the next 102 years. In 1987, the line was sold to the Napa Valley Wine Train. On September 16, 1989, the Wine Train took its inaugural passenger trip and has been steadily running through the valley ever since. 

In 2015, Noble House Hotels & Resorts, Ltd. – a collection of luxury hotels and resorts – entered a partnership with Brooks Street, a California-based real estate development and investment company, for the purchase of the historic and iconic Napa Valley Wine Train. The purchase deepens Noble House’s roots in Northern California, expanding its portfolio to include attractions in the destinations its hotels call home.

Napa Valley Wine Train: What to Expect Aboard this Rolling Restaurant

Hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train for an experience of a lifetime. This rolling restaurant features gourmet multi-course meal, an extensive wine menu, and extraordinary views all around.

They serve up both lunch and dinner most days of the week as well as a few special options on key holidays.

While all rides include a meal, there are also a few tours that include stops at local wineries. The half-day experiences stop at one winery, while the full-day experiences stop at one to three wineries, depending on the option you choose.

Tours last between three to six hours. Some, but not all of them, include one complimentary glass of wine. You can also buy a glass or two of wine off their menu of more than 40 local options.

What to Expect from Your Journey

The Napa Valley Wine Train purchased their first railcar in 1987. All of the cars on this historic train are from 1915. Built by the Pullman Standard Company, they were originally in use by Northern Pacific Railway.

After two years of work, four railcars took their inaugural journey on September 16, 1989. 

Today, the Napa Valley Wine Train consists of 16 railcars and 4 engines. Although some people confuse it for a touring train just for wine tasting, it is mainly a restaurant on train tracks that rolls through the valley. 

Their Executive Chef and his team prepare all of the meals on board. There are four kitchen railcars. 

They serve up dishes with fresh ingredients and offer some of the tastiest meals in the valley. For each meal selection, you will choose from a selection of three to four dishes per course.

Since it is a high-end restaurant, they will work with you if you need modifications for your diet. You just need to let them know ahead of time, so they have what they need on board for your meal. When you enter, just let any of the attendants know which person in your party ordered a dietary specific meal.

The cool thing about this experience is that you also have the chance to watch the chef and his staff in action. The main kitchen railcar has a large window and viewing area, so you can see them create the perfect meal.

What to Expect the Day of Your Journey

Your journey starts with check-in at the Napa Valley Wine Train depot in downtown Napa at 1275 McKinstry St, Napa, CA 94559. Check-in starts 45 to 60 minutes before your journey. Once you are finished with that, you can roam around the historic depot until you hear the boarding call. 

They begin boarding about 30 minutes before the train leaves the station. As long as you are still in the depot, you will not miss the boarding call.

Some packages include private tables and others include up to four people at one table. All of the tables are next to the windows, so each seat has an amazing view of Napa Valley.

The experiences vary slightly, but after you are seated, you are welcome to order a glass of wine. Non-alcoholic drinks such as soda and water are included with your ticket price, so you are welcome to order one of those beverages also.

Your journey begins after everyone is on board. During the first 10 minutes, you will roll through the city of Napa. After that, you will be surrounded by vineyards and wineries for the remainder of your journey.

All experiences are round trip, so your journey begins and ends at the Napa Valley Wine Train station in downtown Napa. 

Napa Valley Wine Train Experiences

There are several daily Napa Valley Wine Train experiences. Some offer lunch, others afternoon tea, and others an evening dinner. There are also a handful of special events that run a few times each year.

Dining Experiences

For the following Dining Experiences, you stay on the train the entire time, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the gourmet gastronomic adventure surrounded by the beautiful landscape.

The daytime experiences last three hours (11:30 am to 2:30 pm) and the evening ones run for around two hours (6:20 pm to 8:30 pm). Keep in mind that check-in and boarding start an hour before train departure. 

1. Vista Dome

The Champagne Vista Dome is a two-story vintage dining car with the best views of Napa Valley. The ride is luxurious thanks to the train's plush booths and curved glass windows that let you admire the landscape, sunset, or stars, depending on the time you choose your tour.

The experience includes a welcome glass of sparkling wine along with your multi-course meal. It runs around $270 to $420 per person depending on the time of year.

All tickets include private tables.

2. Gourmet Express

The Gourmet Express is a less expensive option. This experience includes lunch or dinner in one of their one-story antique Pullman rail cars. This tour includes a complimentary welcome glass of sparkling wine in addition to the multi-course meal.

There are two seatings for each meal, and that way guests get to enjoy different courses in each the dining and the lounge cars. You're also welcome to visit the kitchen cars to see the chefs in action. 

This dining option runs from about $205 to $295 per person. For these seatings, you may share a table with another party.

3. Afternoon Tea x Chandon

For those looking for a lighter dining experience, this is a great new option. You'll start out with a welcome glass of Chandon's Garden Spritz cocktail. Then, you'll savor a traditional afternoon tea service—complete with a selection of fine teas, finger sandwiches, mini desserts, and more. 

This tour offers the elegance of wine country dining as well. You'll get a sparkling wine toast with cheese, and small portions of soup and salad, to round out the local culinary experience. The tour runs on the lunchtime schedule of 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, and costs $255 to $325 per person.

4. Tasting on the Rails

This culinary experience on the recently refurbished 1915 Pullman lounge car is the ultimate adventure in food and wine pairings. You will enjoy a total of seven delicious courses, including an amuse bouche and three duo plates.

These courses are paired with seven premier local wines from Charles Krug, Chandon, Trefethen, Tate, Beaulieu Vineyard, Belle Glos and Ghost Block. 

The three-hour lunchtime tour runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The evening dinner option runs on Saturdays. It costs $405 to $525 per person.

Half-Day Tours

The half-day tours include a stop at one winery. You will enjoy a multi-course meal onboard, disembark to do a tour at a winery, and then re-board the train to return to the station at the end. These journeys last between 3 and 4 hours. 

5. Grgich Hills Estate Tasting

This includes a two-hour train ride, lunch, and a private tour of Grgich Hills Winery. The owner, Mike Grgich, is one of the best winemakers in the valley and famous for the winning Chardonnay from the 1976 Judgement of Paris .

Your tour starts with a welcome glass of sparkling wine, then a multi-course meal on the train, followed by a one-hour seated tasting at Grgich Hills. You will then finish with a nice dessert onboard the train as you head back to the station.

This tour leaves at 11:30 am and tickets cost around $360 to $425 per person.

Full-Day Tours

The full-day tours last about 6 hours and include stops at Napa Valley wineries. All include a gourmet multi-course lunch on the train.

6. The Legacy Tour

This tour includes three one-hour wine tastings. The tour begins with check-in at 9:45 am, and the train leaves at 10:15 am.

Your day starts with breakfast on your way to the first stop and photo opportunity, the iconic 1949 Napa Valley welcome sign. You will then enjoy your first one-hour immersive wine tasting aboard an open-air car. 

You will then reboard at 12 pm and enjoy your second course as the train makes the 30-minute trip to Charles Krug. This tour runs until 1:45 pm. You'll hop on board again to enjoy your third course as you ride the train to V. Sattui Winery.

You will spend just over an hour here and return to the train at around 3:20 pm. Your final course is dessert, which you will enjoy as you ride the train back to the Napa Valley Wine Train station.

You will return around 4:15 pm. This tour is $595 to $775 depending on your booking date.

Special Events

Murder Mystery : If you love murder mysteries, then hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train for one of their Murder Mystery dinners. These 2.5-hour rides include both excitement and elegance as you roll through the vineyards. You'll also have a multiple-course gourmet meal.

The experience begins at 5:30 pm, when you'll board, meet the other guests, and survey the room. There are a few different storylines, and each offers recommended attire so you can fit into the theme. In total, they run more than 20 of these each year.

They are $395 to $600 per person depending on the date and theme.

What Should You Wear on the Napa Valley Wine Train?

The Napa Valley Wine Train is an upscale restaurant experience. While they don't have a strict dress code, I do recommend that you dress up a little.

You can wear business casual attire or class it up even more in the evening. If you plan to do one of the trains with the tastings at local wineries, make sure to wear casual or comfortable shoes. You will be standing on and off for up to an hour at a time.

Here are a few more tips on what to expect from the weather throughout the year, so you can pack accordingly.

Is the Wine Train Good for Kids?

If you are planning on visiting Napa with family, you will find that kids are welcome on the Napa Valley Wine Train. There are certain tours that include kid pricing and options.

A couple of things to note if you plan on riding the train with your kids. They do not allow the kids to run around the train and/or be unattended. If you have a little one that has a hard time sitting still, you may want to reconsider this as an option.

I think kids will enjoy it as there are great views out the windows, and who doesn't love riding around on a train!

Best View: Sterling Winery

Best Tasting Room: Artesa

The Spanish-inspired tasting salon and adjoining patio space at Artesa Winery overlooks the rolling hills of Carneros and is easily one of the most beautiful places to enjoy a flight of wine. Designed by a renowned Spanish architect, the winery was built to blend seamlessly into a high hill of native grasses at the south of the estate.

Artesa’s tasting salon, awarded the 2018 Design Award from the American Institute of Architects , draws inspiration from the art, culture and nature of Barcelona. This Napa winery features sweeping views through floor to ceiling windows and courtyard reminiscent of the Mediterranean waterfront.

At the heart of the bright-white space is a dramatic circular bar covered with hand-made, imported tiles. Leather lounge chairs and tall white ‘tapas’ tables complete the atmosphere of relaxed luxury.

Both the Tasting Salon and Terrace feature Barcelona-inspired food and wine pairing experiences by appointment. Artesa Winery specializes in Pinots and Chardonnay along with a vintage estate sparkling and cabernet, tempranillo, and albariño.

Best Garden: Chateau Montelena

The setting at Chateau Montelena winery is one of the most remarkable in the Napa Valley. It features an Instagram-worthy stone castle carved into a hillside above a garden, lake and vineyard that stretches to the base of Mount Saint Helena.

While they appear to be groomed, the gardens are mostly wild, growing where and how nature intended.  If you take the time to walk the path around the lake, you will be surrounded by plants native to the area, including redwoods, oak, madrone, and toyon. 

The Calistoga AVA offers the perfect climate for fruit, so besides impressive vineyards, you will see mature orchards of mandarins, key limes, blood oranges, Buddha’s hand, Yuzu, and finger limes on the paths leading to the tasting room.

Jade Lake provides the perfect backdrop for this sanctuary which hosts many species of wildlife such as the mute swans and ducks along with the occasional visits of otters and beavers.

As pleasing as the gardens may be, they are not the highlight of this remarkable winey.  Chateau Montelena is the Napa Valley winery that famously won the white wine section of the historic “Judgment of Paris” wine competition in 1976.

The winery still features its remarkable chardonnays, but the vineyard’s diversified soil produces aromatic, rich and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignons and Zinfandels.

Best Art and Adventure: Hess Persson Estates

The combination of ATV vineyard tours and impressive contemporary art collection may seem miss-matched, but all that and more is on offer at Hess Persson Estates. 

Hess Persson offers a range of tour and tasting experiences at their 1,000+ acre vineyard perched on the slopes of Mount Veeder in Napa. Their ATV tours allow you to enjoy stunning views across the valley and feel one with the vines (without the effort). Conclude the excursion with a wine and cheese or food pairing. 

If your interests lie in the Hess art collection, enjoy a self-guided tour free of charge (with reservation), or consider a combination tour complete with private tasting experience. Hans Fahden Vineyards is a family-owned winery, resting 1,000 feet above Napa’s valley floor in the heart of the Mayacama Mountains. A family-owned and operated for three generations, the Fahden Family has a limited production of 1,500 cases per year.

Three vineyard areas are separated by volcanic outcroppings and forests of Douglas Fir. The soil is pure volcanic tufa beneath a thin layer of topsoil that forces it Cabernet Sauvignon vines’ roots to compete for a scarce water supply.

The estate’s perfect location just 30 miles from cooling blankets of fog on the Pacific Coast gives the grapes time to rest at night, producing character and complexity for master winemaker, David Sunberg.

French-style gardens surround the tasting room and add a dash of color to the estage.  No matter the season, roses, irises, petunias, pansies, cornflowers, poppies, ornamental grasses or native shrubs are in bloom.

A generation ago, an amazing wine cave was tunneled into a formation of volcanic ash rock. Inside, the cave’s walls are lined with wine barrels; grape-leaf adorned fixtures; and the twinkle of tiny lights.

Best Lunch Spot: V. Sattui Winery

V. Sattui Winery is a long-time favorite stop for lunch because of its old-world Italian charm, vast picnic grounds, personalized winery, barrel tastings, food pairings, legendary fresh food deli, and friendly staff.

Michelin-Star chef, Stefano Masanti ensures exceptional cuisine matches the glamorous and relaxing space. Culinary Director, Joe Schneider, combines award-winning wines with weekly tasting events. For any Napa tour from San Francisco, V. Sattui is a great spot to relax with a bottle of wine, while enjoying a family lunch on the picnic grounds.

V. Sattui features more than 60 different wines including sparkling and Port-styles and has recently added a Concierge Service designed to tailor group visits to guest preferences.

Best Vineyard Walk: Cuvaison

For those wanting to stretch your legs and get up close and personal to the vines, consider visiting Cuvaison Winery. For over 50 years, this Los Carneros region winery has been introducing the world to exceptional cool-climate Napa Valley Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. 

Currently offered on Monday mornings, their 2-hour hike and tasting experience immerses visitors in the 200-acre property. The guided hike concludes on the patio, with an estate tasting and boxed lunch from Carneros Resort and Spa. 

Those not interested in hiking can still enjoy an elegant tasting in Cuvaison’s Tasting Salon. Tastings are available daily, by appointment only.

Best Medieval Castle: Castello di Amorosa

Castello di Amorosa knows how to make a first impression. The authentically styled, 13 th -century Tuscan castle winery was constructed using more than 200 containers of European materials and furnishings. 

Begun in 1994, a humble building gradually morphed into a castle spanning 121,000 square feet with 107 rooms located in four underground and four above-ground levels. The building has all the elements you’d expect from an authentic Italian castle. A moat with a drawbridge, high stone walls, gargoyles, a church, and a fully equipped torture chamber will fascinate on the way to the vaulted wine tasting cellar.

Thankfully, Castello di Amorosa puts the same love and attention into its wines which are elegant, intensely flavored, and well-balanced. The castle winery produces hand-crafted Italian-styled wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Primitivo and Sangiovese.

Best Wine Cave: Stags Leap Cellars

Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, this winery brought international acclaim to Napa Valley wines when their 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon won the famous 1976 “Judgment of Paris” tasting. A bottle of the vintage was inducted into the Smithsonian National Museum in 1996 to highlight the impact that the achievement had on the U.S. wine industry.

The newly remodeled facility at Stags Leap  is a showcase for gorgeous vineyards and Napa countryside. At the center of the vaulted cave, swings an amazing floor-to-ceiling Foucault pendulum. According to Winiarski, the winery’s cave “is the moral center of the universe.”

The 90-minute Stags Leap tour and tasting experience (by appointment only) explores the history of the estate, its unique terroir, and its superlative wines. Small groups are treated to fascinating stories of one of California’s earliest wine estates as they stroll the property and finish with a seated tasting in the stately Manor House.

You can no longer taste the famous 1973 cabernet, but you can taste one of their newer vintages from vines that have been growing on the estate since the 1890s.

Best Budget-friendly: Rombauer Vineyards

This St. Helena vineyard is one of the last wineries in the valley that encourages you to bring your own food for a picnic. Reserve one of their outdoor tables, buy a glass or bottle of their well-known chardonnay and enjoy a budget-friendly meal. 

If you are interested in a guided tasting here, those won’t break the bank either! Indoor and outdoor tastings for groups of 1-4 are only $25 per person. While they don’t offer much for snacks, the friendly staff, quality wine, and beautiful setting make for a great value tasting. 

Best Wine Club: Beringer Vineyard

If you really enjoy the wines from a specific winery and the wines are hard to find, then I recommend signing up a wine club in Napa Valley. As a member, you will often be the first to receive new releases or limited production wines. Most memberships include free tastings in their tasting rooms and discounts when you buy more wines online.

Beringer V ineyards has an extremely celebrated wine club credited to its intricately adorned 17-room Rhine House mansion, constructed in 1884. Beringer Reserve Club members receive complimentary samples and tastings in exclusive areas of the mansion.

The Beringer Wine Club also features special invitations to classes, performances, recitals and other pop-up occasions like gourmet dinners and rare barrel-tasting sessions in cellars where wine producers work their magic.

While distinguished as the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley and a National Historic site, Beringer Estate is graced with 19th-century architecture and verdant gardens.

Beringer cultivates diverse and prized vineyards across appellations from the highest hills in Napa to the valley floor behind the historic winery.

Best Convenience: Ackerman Heritage House

If you are staying in downtown Napa, a stop at Ackerman Heritage House is a must. This stunning 1889 Victorian Estate is walking distance from most Napa hotels, but the convenience doesn’t make the experience.

Ackerman Family Vineyards provide elegant experiences at their Heritage House. You can find classic tastings here, but Ackerman pays almost as much attention to their food as their wines. From chef-led wine and lunch pairings, to cooking classes, to one of the best brunches in town, all of your senses are sure to be delighted. 

Best Fairy Tale Estate: Domaine Carneros

Founded by the noble French family behind Champagne Taittinger, this majestically grand château delivers a splendid wine tour in Carneros Appellation of Napa Valley. The Domaine Carneros is located in the southern part of Napa Valley, near the cool climate of San Pablo Bay.

This stunning 18th-century French mansion is carved into a gorgeous Napa hillside. Below the winery are cellars, replete with exceptional sparkling wine. There are three terraces from which you can enjoy breathtaking views while sipping extraordinary sparkling and Pinot Noir wines.

Winery tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how sparkling wines are produced, from harvesting of the vineyards to the bottling process. The tour experience culminates with a sampling of wines paired with an array of artisan cheeses, gourmet caviar, smoked salmon, and charcuterie, while seated in the Louis XV–inspired salon.

Best Celebrity-Owned Winery: Inglenook Winery

One of the original Napa Valley wineries, the elegant, ivy-covered Inglenook was founded by Finnish sea captain and wine connoisseur, Gustave Niebaum, in 1879. Gustave was passionate about making fine wines.

Hollywood legends were drawn to this Napa treasure in the 1930s and 40s, including Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, and Jean Harlow, to name just a few.

In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola acquired the notorious winery and spent considerable time, money, and energy restoring it to its original, magnificent splendor. He has since returned the abandoned name Inglenook to the estate, promoting it as a true crown jewel of Napa Valley.

Wine tours of the historic grounds, elaborate tasting rooms, antique cars and other features are by appointment only.

Best Family-friendly: Tres Sabores

Tres Sabores is a kid and dog-friendly vineyard aimed at bringing you back to the old Napa. This family-owned winery, opened in 1999, aims “to explore the ‘three savory flavors’ in every glass of wine: the taste of the vine, the terroir, and the good company around the table.”

Private Tours

If you prefer to stick with your own group for a Napa Valley wine tasting from San Francisco and you have at least 6 people, you can easily arrange a reasonably priced private tour. A day tour to Napa from San Francisco will run $400 to $600 but you’ll need to add in the wine tasting fees (plan on an average $25 per person at each winery) and gratuity for the driver.

Private tours can be customized to wineries you want to visit, and you can decide whether you want the fare to include wine tasting fees or pay them as you go. The operator should also make reservations at the wineries (make sure of this!).

DIY Of course, you can drive yourself on a tour of Napa Valley wineries. Don’t rent a car from the airport, wait until you get into San Francisco and rent your car just for the day you plan to head to up to Napa Valley (hotels can charge up to $70 per night for a garage space!). Make sure you check how late the rental car company is open, since some close early on certain nights of the week.

Be sure to set up tasting tour appointments in advance. Most wineries have open tasting hours, but many of the best experiences require advance reservations. You can simply call the wineries or look on their sites to see if appointments can be made online.

You can also use Uber/Lift as transportation, but they will not plan your route for the day. Without a good plan for going from winery to winery and lunch, you may spend most of your day inside a Prius instead of enjoying your day in Napa Valley.

• Eat Before Tasting: Eat a good breakfast before you leave your hotel so you are ready for a full day of tasting.
• Don’t Wear Perfume: Leave the scent of your perfume and lotions at your hotel. This allows your nose (and others’ noses!) to fully experience the beauty of each wine.
• Search “how to taste wines”: Swirl, sniff, sip, and repeat to savor all of the aromas and flavors.
• Ask Questions: Don’t be afraid to ask questions as the wineries LOVE talking about their wines.
• Pace Yourself: Wine tasting is a slow process so you can remember every moment, flavor, and wine. Take your time as you taste and savor the experience.

Sound dreamy? Napa truly has everything that any girls’ group could ask for on a weekend getaway.

While I've been to Napa Valley, it was just on a day trip from San Francisco . My friends and I visited one winery, but I would LOVE to go back and spend a few days drinking, dining, and hanging out with my girls!

Since I've only spent one day in Napa, I asked my friend Hannah Falkosky from Plate & Compass to help out with putting together this ultimate Napa Valley girls trip guide !

This guide will show you how to plan the best itinerary and enjoy the beautiful views of Napa Valley while on a weekend trip with your girls.

The guide is perfect if you're planning a bachelorette party, a 21st birthday celebration , or if you're just looking for a fun girls' getaway!

So, keep reading for everything you need to know when planning a girls' weekend in Napa Valley, California!

Best Time to Visit Napa Valley

The best time to visit Napa Valley is May through October , when the weather is warmest, so that you can enjoy those stunning vineyards and stroll around Downtown Napa.

The peak season in Napa is from August to October, so you’ll find the optimal pairing of better prices and decent weather if you visit in the spring before the height of the peak season.

I've also visited Napa Valley in the winter several times. There are still wine tastings and plenty of great restaurants to visit indoors if you choose a winter visit. The weather will be cold, so don't forget to pack your coat and a cute sweater.

Where to Stay in Napa Valley for a Girls Trip

Keep in mind that Napa Valley is more than just one city. It’s actually an entire region that encompasses several cities and a whole lot of beautiful vineyards.

So when it comes to deciding on a location to stay, you’ll want to pick a spot for your girls’ weekend in Napa Valley that best suits you to avoid wasting hours driving around.

To help you decide, here are some of the cities in Napa Valley and what they are best known for:

Downtown Napa is located near the river and is the largest city in the Napa Valley, with lots of restaurants, shopping, and hotels.

This area is on the south end of the Valley, so it will require transportation to most vineyards, but it offers the lowest rates and more nightlife.

The town of Calistoga is known for its hot springs and luxurious thermal spas.

The downtown area is small but charming.

Consider Calistoga if you plan on spending lots of time by the pool or in the spa!

Yountville is Napa’s culinary hub, where you’ll find plenty of fine dining, including several Thomas Keller restaurants and the gorgeous Restoration Hardware restaurant .

If you’re down to splurge, Yountville is a beautiful and convenient spot to choose.

St. Helena is a great central spot in Napa Valley, with close access to many of the famous wineries.

Wine Tastings and Tours in Napa Valley

The highlight of a great girls’ weekend in Napa Valley is exploring the amazing wineries and tasting your way through the Valley.

Napa is particularly famous for Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. The valley's Mediterranean climate contributes to its reputation as a top wine destination.

As I said, there are over 400 wineries, so you won’t be able to visit all of them!

The key to experiencing Napa with your girls is to prioritize quality over quantity.

Part of the experience is kicking back and soaking it in, walking around the vineyards, and taking lots of pictures. You don’t want to be rushed.

Here are some of the most fun and unique wine-tasting experiences that promise great views, great wine, and an overall fun experience.

1. Castello di Amorosa

Not only can you enjoy fabulous wine, but the Castello di Amorosa tasting includes a tour of a real-life 14th-century Tuscan-style castle! Visiting is a must for your Napa itinerary .

The castle was recently constructed and opened to the public in 2007 after 15 years of construction to make it architecturally authentic.

There are several tasting and tour options that will guide you through the castle, including the underground tunnels where the wine is produced.

Then, take your time exploring and relaxing and check out the wildlife that lives on the property.

2. Cakebread Cellars

If you’re into fine wines, you’ve probably heard the renowned Cakebread name by now. 

Some of the region’s finest wines are produced by Cakebread, so feel free to put your pinkies up while you enjoy these incredible wines in their garden.

The grounds are beautiful, and a portion of the tasting involves walking around with the educator and learning about the wine-making process.

3. Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena was built in 1882, so it’s one of the oldest in Napa Valley. 

The scenery and gorgeous wrapping vines covering Chateau Montelena make this historic vineyard in Calistoga even more impressive.

After your tasting, you can roam around the Japanese garden and take lots of pictures in front of the iconic chateau.

4. Domaine Carneros

Domaine Carneros is possibly the best place in Napa Valley to spend a sunny afternoon with your girlfriends!

The ambiance of this charming chateau feels like visiting the French countryside. 

You will first make your way up the terraced steps with fountains toward the chateau. If you make it all the way up without stopping several times for pictures, I’ll be shocked!

Then you’ll be seated on the beautiful terrace or in the sunroom and overlook the vineyards while you sip a flight of champagne.

Pro tip: Book this tasting for the last day of your trip because it’s the perfect way to wrap up the weekend and a magical sendoff back to reality.

5. Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train is a great way to explore several wineries while checking out the unique views of Napa from the wine train!

This tour leaves from the city of Napa and takes you on a journey through the Napa Valley, stopping at vineyards for tastings along the way.

You can choose from several tour options, including an afternoon tea, brunch, or dinner train.

The wine train is one of the best ways to explore Napa Valley, as you won't have to worry about finding transportation between the wineries!

Visitors to Benziger Family Winery have five tour and tasting options to choose from. The exclusive Tribute Estate Tour takes visitors behind the scenes for a close-up look at the biodynamic vineyards and winemaking facilities. Visitors can also take a tractor tram tour of the vineyards to learn more about biodynamic farming.

No. 2: Eberle Winery - Paso Robles, California

Eberle is an essential part of Paso Robles wine history, says 10Best contributor Jill Barth. A tour of caves on the property has earned high recommendations from visitors. Offered along with seated tastings, this look at the 16,000-plus square feet of underground caves is a unique way to experience one of the pioneering producers of the region. 

No. 1: Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery - Hammondsport, New York

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, located in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York, offers an 1886 Food and Wine Experience in which guests partake in a guided viticultural or cellar tour followed by a seated wine tasting.  This experience is available from May through October and is reservation only.  For a less in-depth endeavor, seated wine tastings are offered year-round.
