Why you’ll love it

This article contains links from which we may earn revenue. These links are signposted with an asterisk. More information  here .

You probably know Nashville as “Music City” — a fitting moniker for a town that sounds as good as this one. This is country music’s guitar-wielding heartland, where the smooth Nashville Sound was tuned up and churned out and where the veteran Grand Ole Opry radio show nurtured titans such as Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton.

Visitors come for the city’s soundtrack but stay for everything else

But it’s not just country in Tennessee’s capital: it’s also about bluegrass and jazz and gospel and rock’n’roll. Music of all kinds permeates every city block: writers entertain with just a guitar and a song in intimate listening rooms, indie bands shake basement venues, and chords clash along neon-choked Broadway.

Visitors come for the city’s soundtrack but stay for everything else. Diverse neighbourhoods spill out from honky-tonk-packed downtown — from Germantown up north to The Gulch immediately south — and they’re crammed with boutiques selling Nashville-designed clothes and curios, plus brunch spots, cool bars and taprooms.

Throw in a food scene that’s peppered with James Beard Award winners, cool arts venues and a sprawling state park within city limits and you’ll soon find that Music City marches to its own, very enticing, beat.

Get planning

new york times travel nashville

Kick things off at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum* , a short hop from Broadway. Exhibits track the genre from its earliest beginnings in the southern Appalachian mountains and showcase memorabilia from Hank Williams’ Martin D-28 guitar to Elvis Presley’s gold-plated Cadillac.

From the museum, you can hop on a bus for a guided tour of RCA Studio B: everyone from the Everly Brothers to Dolly Parton has recorded hits within these walls, and Elvis’s favourite Steinway piano is the studio’s crown jewel. Held in equal esteem is the Ryman Auditorium* , one-time home of the Grand Ole Opry radio show, which launched the careers of countless country stars — book a backstage tour to follow in the footsteps of musical greats.

The National Museum of African American Music* is one of Nashville’s best attractions . Detailed interactive exhibits trace the origins of the foundational blues genre, and go on to cover everything from the Harlem Renaissance to modern hip-hop. The Johnny Cash Museum , just off Broadway, is well worth a look too.

At some point, the crayon-coloured neon signs, boot shops and screaming honky-tonks of Broadway will be calling. The most popular spots — lilac-fronted Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, Robert’s Western World and Legends Corner — are at the west end, but duck in wherever the music takes you; there are no cover charges here.

It’s not only about music, though. Centennial Park has a full-sized replica of the Parthenon (yes, really) and Radnor Lake State Park is carved up by hiking trails, and home to an aviary complex.

The Frist Art Museum is worth a visit. Exhibits in the art deco former post office are in constant rotation, so you never know what you’ll find.

From big-name brand hotels to boutique properties in repurposed landmarks, Nashville has plenty of places to rest your head after a raucous night on Broadway.

The headline attractions are downtown, so this is a sensible base for first-timers. You’ll be close to Broadway, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Ryman Auditorium at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel* , or in the heart of Music Row — the city’s recording hub — at the cool Virgin Hotels Nashville* , where the Pool Club rooftop bar offers glittering views over the city.

Hip East Nashville bristles with boutiques, creative food stops and bars

If you’re not a newbie, set yourself in hip East Nashville . The neighbourhood bristles with boutiques, creative food stops and bars catering to locals and tourists in the know. A good option is The Russell* , an uber-cool hotel in a converted church. The Gulch, an old industrial district where the former warehouses are now filled with contemporary restaurants and brightened with street art , is another fun spot. Bed down in The Thompson* , a boutique hotel with stylish mid-century modern interiors.

Midtown, adjacent to Vanderbilt University, has a laid-back yet buzzy vibe and is still within easy reach of all the big sights. Check in at Graduate Nashville* , a quirky hotel themed around Dolly Parton and other country stars.

Northeast of downtown, the giant Gaylord Opryland Resort* is a destination in itself, and a sure bet for families. It’ll put you within kissing distance of the Grand Ole Opry, and it’s got its very own water park, Soundwaves, with rides, adults-only zones and plenty of cabanas.

There’s a lot more to Nashville’s dining scene than hot chicken and barbecue — but it’s a very good place to start. Fiery fried chicken can be found all over town (and beyond), yet purists will tell you that it’s best at Prince’s, where the tradition began. In most places, you can choose your heat level (beware: extra hot means exactly that), and you’ll eat it served on white bread with a pickle.

Barbecue is an institution in most southern cities and Nashville is no exception. Eat ribs dry rubbed or smothered in sauce, super-tender brisket and smoked chicken at downhome joints, or hip, industrial spots right across the city.

Sticking with Southern classics, meat and three is a comforting taste of tradition. You’ll get a choice of meat — think roast beef, meatloaf or country-fried steak — served up with Southern sides in plentiful portions: oozing mac and cheese, fried green tomatoes, creamed corn and buttery mash. The best place in town is Arnold’s Country Kitchen, which has been on the scene for four decades.

Foodies should also carve out some time in East Nashville, the artsy enclave that’s emerged as the city’s top gourmet destination. It’s a staple of city food tours and you’ll find taquerias, cult burger joints, ramen spots and coffee shops , plus places whipping up fancy small plates with global influences.

Head to Assembly Food Hall for a quick lunch just off Broadway. There’s often live music (this is Nashville, after all) and vendors dole out Thai street food, sushi and Italian desserts.

Just a short walk from Broadway, Printer’s Alley has a moodier, broodier vibe than its glittering cousin. As its name suggests, it was once the hub of Music City’s printing industry, though it eventually morphed into a strip of saloons and speakeasies and, later, nightclubs. Now, effortlessly cool places keep off-Broadway punters entertained: check out live-music spot Jane’s Hideway, and the jazz and burlesque shows at Skull’s Rainbow Room.

Art and music fuse at Hatch Show Print’s Haley Gallery: the letterpress printing shop has been turning out music posters since the 19th century, and some of the most striking are on display in this small space, alongside other quirky temporary displays.

Nashville is a mashup of distinct neighbourhoods and it’s well worth taking some time out to explore them. Strike southwest of downtown and you’ll hit Hillsboro, a charming district known for its colourful street art, popular pancake house and Belcourt Theater, a cool indie cinema. Or wander around Germantown to see a hodge-podge of Victorian-era buildings and to shop in one-off boutiques.

Know before you go

Reliable public transport options in Nashville are limited so, particularly if you’re planning to explore the outer neighbourhoods, you might want to think about renting a car — however, the ride-hailing apps Uber and Lyft are both active and reliable in the city.

Nashville’s music culture means it’s a city of festivals, so check out the schedule before booking your trip. Dedicated to country music, The CMA Fest is a landmark annual event (and be aware that hotel prices will reflect its popularity).

It’s also well worth booking tickets for popular venues such as The Bluebird Cafe and the Grand Ole Opry ahead of time so you’re not disappointed.

2 Nashville eateries make New York Times’ best restaurants in US list for 2022

by: Sebastian Posey

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Audrey and Locust, both located in Nashville have been named among the 50 best restaurants in the country by the New York Times .

The Restaurant List is an annual collection of NYT’s favorite restaurants in America. Each entry on the list of restaurants they “love most in 2022,” breaks down why the location stands out.

Up first for Music City on the alphabetically ranked list is Audrey .

In her summation of Audrey , Kim Severson praised Chef Sean Brock’s flagship restaurant, writing that he, “brings every bit of his culinary, intellectual and history-loving self to this restaurant, which was named for his grandmother and is dedicated to interpreting and honoring Appalachian food.”

Audrey opened in October 2021. You can learn more about the restaurant here .

Nashville’s other eatery on the list, Locust , is described as the “deceptively unassuming restaurant run by Trevor Moran…”

Locust is more than a meal, it’s an experience. “Mr. Moran or one of his merry band of chefs will coax you past the small menu and onto an exhilarating (and expensive) ride,” Severson wrote.

Locust opened in October 2020. You can learn more about the restaurant here .

When to visit Nashville: find the right time for your trip to Music City

Nashville takes the science of entertainment seriously, making it a lively place to visit year round.

That said, Music City adopts many different personalities throughout the year and assessing your areas of interest (and your tolerance for heat and severe weather) prior to booking a trip will ensure you make the most of your adventure to Tennessee’s capital city.

Spring and summer overflow with local festivals and music concerts, but these months also experience volatile weather. Fall and winter welcome a more subdued calendar event-wise, but also fewer crowds and less expensive prices.

Whether you’re a music aficionado, an outdoor adventurer or a sports fanatic, here’s our guide to the best times to visit Nashville.

A red kayak sits a the side of a lake on a sunny day

May and June (plus October) are the best times for great weather

Nashville sits within the subtropical climate zone – which means it gets all the weather, all the time – but with some careful planning, you can vastly improve the odds of a pleasant, storm-free trip to Music City. May and June are in that glorious window between the severe weather common in the springtime (March and April make up the core of tornado season) and the oppressive heat and humidity of late summer. These months offer perfect patio weather, leafy green trees and blooming flowers, and plenty of sunshine – early summer is Nashville at its best.

For those who like a bit of crispness in the air, October is also an amazing time to visit weather-wise; the leaves turn brilliant oranges and reds, rain is scarce and the summer heat is a thing of the past.

May to September is the best time for music

While you can find music in Nashville pretty much year-round, touring bands and music festivals significantly drop off in winter. “Music season” kicks off in May with local events like the Sevier Park Fest , Musician’s Corner , and the Full Moon Pickin’ Party making their debut, and it reaches a fever pitch in June with high profile concert events like CMA Fest , Bonnaroo and Nashville Pride .

Musical artists carry on their tours through the fall, and September invites an element of local charm with the long running music festival Live on the Green and the beloved Americana Fest that takes over stages around the city.

January to March is the best time for budget travelers

In general, we wouldn’t call Nashville a budget destination , but hotel prices and airfares do decrease in the winter months after the winter holiday season concludes. While winter travel may seem unappealing at first, the “cold” months here are generally mild (albeit a bit soggy) and it’s a great time to see Nashville’s cultural offerings without having to battle the crowds – getting into restaurants will be easier, ride-hailing transport options will be cheaper and the city takes on a bit of a “locals only” atmosphere.

Two people splash in the force of an fast-flowing waterfall

June to August is the best time for water adventures

Nashville sits astride the Cumberland River, which feeds a dense network of lakes, creeks and small rivers. It takes the spring months to warm the water up but come June, locals are heading out to make a splash in their backyard water wonderland.

Grab a paddleboard and hit the Cumberland or the adjacent reservoirs of Percy Priest and Old Hickory Lakes – both of the latter lakes are approximately a 30-minute drive from the city center. If you love to take a lazy float on a river in a kayak or an inner tube, it’s hard to beat the Harpeth River , which is a similar distance from downtown. Waterfall lovers who have a set of wheels will want to drive to nearby Rock Island State Park or Cummins Falls State Park – both offer spectacular views of cascades, epic swimming holes and opportunities for a perfect summer afternoon.

Heads up, though: rain comes down fast and hard in July so always be weather-informed before hitting the water. Flooding happens quickly and can be very dangerous. Alternatively, things start to dry up toward the end of August so low water levels in smaller bodies of water may disrupt some float plans.

Two small children follow a trail through green woodland on a summer's day

September to November is the best time for hiking

While one would assume that hiking season would overlap with water adventure season – and it does for some of the heartier folk out there – the summer heat (and the bugs that come with it) can make a hike feel more like a slog, depending on the weather. For this reason we love hitting the many trails around the city during the cool(er), dry fall months, when the gorgeous colors are an added bonus.

Spring gets an honorable mention for hiking (the blooming season is truly a wonder), but storm season in Nashville is no joke. Weather during March and April is notoriously unpredictable, sometimes with dangerous consequences; it could just be rain, or it could be hail, flooding or, the worst-case scenario, a tornado . Always check the weather forecast before you strap on those hiking boots and try to be flexible with your plans; many a spring camping trip has been washed out by pop-up storms.

August to September is the best time to see artsy Nashville

The Nashville performing and visual arts scenes rock year round but late summer brings a batch of delightfully quirky and avant garde festivals to the fore, making it an excellent time to get familiar with the city’s artsy underground.

Things kick off in late July/early August with Kindling Arts Festival , dedicated to promoting local theater, dance and experimental art. In mid-August East Nashville embraces its favorite tradition, the Tomato Art Fest , a multi-day celebration of every southerner’s favorite fruit/vegetable. Embracing the tomato mantra “A Uniter, Not A Divider!,” participants show up in tomato-inspired garb to enjoy parades, concerts, art vendors, Bloody Mary contests and more.

The fun keeps on going with the Defy Film Festival , which brings local and international filmmakers to Nashville screens to share their work, and the Nashville Shakespeare Festival , a multi-week program that invites folks to enjoy Shakespearean classics and more contemporary theater pieces in a picnic setting.

September to October is the best time for spectator sports

Home to NHL, NFL and MLS teams, Nashville takes its sports seriously, and attending a game is a great way to participate in the vivacious sporting experience the town is known for. September and October represent the single time that all three of these seasons overlap – check out the Nashville Soccer Club at the new Geodis Stadium, chant at the top of your lungs with Predators fans as the occasional rogue throws a catfish on the ice, or cheer on a Titans touchdown with 69,000 fellow fans at the Nissan Stadium.

Nashville named the ‘It City’ 11 years ago

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Monday, Jan. 8 is an important anniversary for Music City.

Eleven years ago, The New York Times named Nashville the “It City.” News 2 took a look at how one headline launched Nashville as one of the best places to visit and live in the country.

Jan. 8, 2013 was an ordinary Tuesday, but here at home, it was the launch of a new Nashville.

“In 2013, the New York Times crowned Nashville as the ‘It City,’ and ever since then, we are no longer the best kept secret in America,” said historian David Ewing.

Ewing knows Nashville history inside and out. He said that single national newspaper article drew a whole new type of tourist.

“The ‘It City’ article had an immediate bump for Nashville. Everyone was emailing that article. It went viral online,” he said.

However, Ewing added modern Nashville actually started 20 years earlier with big civic investments like Nissan Stadium, and downtown added new museums and entertainment venues, but even with all those accomplishments, Ewing said it was Nashville’s restaurants in neighborhoods like Germantown that catapulted Nashville to the top of the list.

“Today, there’s so many new restaurants opening every month here in Nashville. It’s really hard to keep track of how many great, amazing chefs we have here,” Ewing said.

According to Ewing, that combination of history, authenticity, and great food, plus just being a cool, friendly city, drew young people to Music City’s universities and new corporate towers to our skyline.

| READ MORE |  Latest headlines from Nashville and Davidson County

“The companies that have come here since that ‘It City’ article include Amazon, AllianceBernstein, and Oracle,” Ewing said. “Out of town money started saying, ‘Why aren’t we investing in Nashville?'”

Ewing admitted affordability and traffic can jeopardize Nashville’s momentum, but he said the city is working on those issues, and the best is yet to come.

“No one has unseated us as being the ‘It City’ now.”

How to spend 36 Hours in Nashville

new york times travel nashville

Hi there! Today I will be sharing my itinerary and guide for how to spend 36 hours in Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville is such a fun place to visit, and one that I think should be on everyone’s bucket list. In addition to the amazing music and bar scene, Nashville also has great food, interesting museums and lots of street art! Nashville really has something for everyone, and in this post I will be sharing fun things that most travelers will enjoy! For a first trip to Nashville, a weekend is a great amount of time to see the city and experience some of its most popular attractions. Keep reading for my guide for how to spend 36 hours in Nashville!

There are many great neighborhoods to stay in when visiting Nashville. I stayed in The Gulch, part of downtown, and I really enjoyed it! There were many restaurants and coffee shops in the area, and I really liked that it was removed from the craziness of Broadway. If you’re only in Nashville for the weekend, I do recommend staying somewhere in the downtown area. That way, you’ll be able to walk to Broadway and be close to many museums and popular restaurants. I really liked my AirBnb in The Gulch – you can check out the listing here .

new york times travel nashville

We specifically picked an AirBnb so it would be comfortable to work from home, but there are also a bunch of wonderful hotels in the area. Check out the map below or click here for some great options!

Brunch at Biscuit Love

Start your day with brunch at Biscuit Love in The Gulch! The line will likely be very long, especially on weekends, so get there early! Another option, which I definitely recommend, is to order for takeout and enjoy your food back in your hotel/AirBnb. If you want to order for takeout, order about an hour before you want to pick up your food! I recommend the cinnamon rolls, and of course, anything with their delicious biscuits.

new york times travel nashville

Check out the WhatLiftsYou Wings Mural

Also located in The Gulch, close to Biscuit Love, is the super famous Nashville Wings mural! This is another place where there will likely be a long line, but you might get lucky and be able to snap a quick photo. The exact address of the mural is 302 11th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203.

new york times travel nashville

Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame

After brunch and visiting the wing mural, head over the Country Music Hall of Fame . The walk from The Gulch is only about 20 minutes, but you can also take a scooter or Uber. The Country Music Hall of Fame is such a cool museum, and one that I definitely recommend visiting! I like country music, but I’m not a super-fan, and I still found the museum to be very interesting. There is so much information about country music stars, and my favorite part is that they have tons of outfits that were worn by these singers for award shows and other events! I spent about an hour in the museum, but if you love country music, you can easily spend 2 hours exploring. Tickets to the museum are $26 for adults and $16 for kids.

new york times travel nashville

Visit the Ryman Auditorium

After visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame, take a five minute walk to the Ryman Auditorium . This is another tour that I really recommend. The Ryman, a performance venue, is such an important piece of Nashville’s history and culture, and learning about the building and its past was very interesting. You’ll start off your tour with a short video about the Ryman and its unique history, and then you’ll walk through the venue itself. So many famous people have performed at the Ryman, including Ed Sheeran, Aretha Franklin and Tim McGraw, just to name a few. The Grand Ole Opry also called the Ryman home for many years! Tickets for self guided tours are $26 for adults and $17 for children.

new york times travel nashville

Have a late lunch at Hattie B’s Hot Chicken

Hattie B’s is famous in Nashville, and for good reason, their food is really good! There are four locations in Nashville, and I visited the Broadway restaurant, close by to the Ryman Auditorium. There will likely be a line, as it is a very popular spot, but it’s worth the wait and the line usually moves pretty quickly. In addition to the delicious fried chicken, I also really enjoyed the pimento mac and cheese and the crinkle fries. Hattie B’s also makes a great late night stop after visiting the bars on Broadway!

If you have a short time in Nashville, the evening trolly tour is a great way to see the city and learn about its history in about 2 hours. The tour picks up at River Front Park in downtown Nashville at 7:30pm, and takes you all around the city, stopping at major locations like the Parthenon and the Capitol building. It was so interesting to see and learn about all of these places outside of the city center that I wouldn’t have visited otherwise.

Our tour guide was amazing, and he provided us with so much interesting information throughout the tour. Although two hours was a little long for me, I still definitely recommend this tour. I loved riding the little trolly, and it was a fun evening activity. Tickets for the evening trolly tour are $39 for adults and $19.50 for kids!

Dinner at Merchants

After your trolly tour, head over to Merchants on Broadway for dinner. Unlike most of the other bars and restaurants in the area, Merchants has a quiet(er) and relaxed atmosphere. Merchants has two restaurants, a more casual first floor bistro as well as a more formal dining room. We ate at the bistro, and we really enjoyed the fish tacos and the pulled pork sandwich. Definitely make reservations in advance, they get very busy!

Check out the Bars on Broadway

After dinner at Merchants, there will be no shortage of bar options on Broadway. Many of these bars will have live music, so you can pick whichever one(s) look fun to you! Many famous country musicians have bars on Broadway, including Jason Aldean , Florida Georgia Line and Dierks Bentley – and these are definitely a fun time!

Visit 12 South

The 12 South neighborhood of Nashville is one of my favorites! It’s much calmer than downtown, but there’s still lots to do. I recommend starting your day at The Frothy Monkey for breakfast and coffee. They have great outdoor seating!

After The Frothy Monkey, check out the cute boutiques in the area, including Reese Witherspoon’s store, Draper James ! The outside of Draper James also makes a great photo spot with its blue and white striped walls – and right across the street in the alleyway you’ll find an I Believe in Nashville mural. Both of these are definitely Insta-worthy spots.

End your time in 12 South by visiting the delicious Five Daughter’s Bakery ! They have the most delicious donuts, and you definitely need to try a few flavors. Even if you’re too full from breakfast, take them with you to-go, they are worth it!

Check out the Loveless Cafe

I had heard so much about Loveless Cafe that I knew I had to check it out! It’s located about 30 minutes from Nashville, so you will need a car to visit. You could Uber, but honestly, I personally don’t think it’s worth it. Loveless Cafe is an old motel that has been converted into a restaurant and gift shop! It’s very cute, and definitely a fun place to visit if you have time. We visited on a Sunday morning, and the wait for a table for two was over an hour and a half. We decided to order take out, which only took 20 minutes, and ate in our car instead! I definitely recommend doing this, especially if you are short on time. Personally, I thought the food at the Loveless Cafe was only okay – but I get that people are coming more for the experience and not just the food.

Overall, if you have a car and time to spare, this is a cool place to visit, and a nice way to end your time in Nashville!

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

Everything went well with the flight. But one of the flight attendants had on inappropriate pants. She had on an old worn out pair of sweat pants. The back seam was unrivaled and should not have been worn for work. If I had not seen her in the airport with the standard type of luggage, I certainly would not have thought she was working for Delta. Not a good look at all for representation.

Great!! I haven’t had a bad experience with them.

The plane was one hour late cause they were doing some reparations with us on the plane no mention I was in the first seat and the door was open the entire time with 8 degrees! The plane was totally dirty no mention old ! The staff was nice but no put together, the attention to details and passenger experience is missing and i always travel first !!! Is better the lounge than the plane! KLM/air France every details is taken care maybe you need a creative creator or experience client need asap was terrible and not memorable for the price that I payed very dissatisfied

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Another horrible Jet Blue experience. This airline has suffered the biggest decline of all from best to worst. TVs didn’t work (again). internet was temperamental. Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks.

I hate their constant delays! It’s as if I cannot confidently make plans for timing when I'm traveling with them. I slept through it, so all I can say is it was good.

There was no wheelchair or wheelchair escort at the gate..unacceptable

From bag drop to boarding, it was great. In-flight is a little different. The seats were a little uncomfortable for that long of a flight. The rest of the cabin crew except for Eva was wonderful. Eva was not friendly at all. I've had to personally encounter her twice in-flight. First time was when I had to go to the lavatory in the back of the plane, and since it was the first for me to board such tiny plane, I didn't know we were using the crew toilet. She was giving me an attitude while telling me where and how to open it since it's not the regular push to open type of door. The second one was when I had to throw trash then use the lavatory again. I asked where to throw them, and unfortunately she was the only crew in the back doodling on her phone, she had to point it out to me with an attitude then told me to wait on the carpet, which I understand because I didn't realize that, but she could have been nicer. After all, I'm a paying customer, and assisting a passenger who isn't knowledgeable about the aircraft is one of the things she's there for. The rest of the experience and crew from bag drop to in-flight were excellent except for her.

It took an hour to get my bag after landing. Not exaggerating

Boarding process on JetBlue is an absolute disgrace. I can’t believe they can’t figure out a better way to board everyone. They called people with disabilities, mosaic and group A all at once and it was a disaster

Original plane sidelined. Had to wait an hour for replacement.

Fantastic. Smooth boarding with an infant. Never experienced it with any other carriers.

An hour and a half late is UNACCEPTABLE. The negative impact to our family is unconscionable. And for the price we were forced to pay...

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

The flight was canceled. Got rebooked to Chicago and when we arrived our luggage where to there. They were going to our original destination the day after. They would not deliver them to our house. We had to go pick them up.

737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.

Other than the two hour delay, it was fine. Of course they were very professional and kept us informed throughout the whole delay..

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.

WiFi connected but only let you go to the AA website, not even text messaging worked.

The flight was excellent, provided that we had inclement weather. We departed earlier than scheduled and arrived early. There was a little turbulence, but nothing to be worried about.

Same basket of unhealthy prepackaged snacks (junk food) which was depleted by the time it got to my row!!

pleased with overall experienced, but seats in coach are tight.

Don't often sit in 1st class. Our experience was great.

The 2 hour delay was frustrating but our crew did a great job getting us out quickly and keeping communication especially with the people who had connecting flights

It was right on time and crew were very courteous

I had purchased a ticket that allowed one check bag yet I was still charged for my bag! the lady at the ticket counter was rude and condescending.

American always delays flight so it stressful getting the next connection

Flight was 2 1/2 hours late and information at the gate was inaccurate and inconsistent with online data.

This recognisable no-frills airline gets me from point-A to point-B. I was able to get to Chicago without stress. The checked baggage collection and reclaim could be improved.

Pretty good. Would’ve been excellent if we would have left on time and the crew wasn’t late.

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

Overall it was a good experience. Stewards were very kind and professional. The departure and arrival times were as promised. Plane was clean.

No frills, limited comfort, no food, no entertainment, but fine

The seats were very uncomfortable. The crew was very polite and helpful.

The airplane was extremely hot the air conditioner wasn’t working I

Seats horrible. No way of getting comfortable . But flight ran smoothly

Every thing was fine ,low price, easy on time ,clean, good staff, really no issues

Unfortunately not great, my flight was canceled with no notice given. I attempted to reach out to spirit airlines and have yet to receive any correspondence. I then had to book a new flight at two times the cost of the original.

An editor on the Travel desk explains our decision to explore the Middle Eastern kingdom.

On a highway at dusk, a camel sits in the bed of a pick up truck. The truck is weathered, and Toyota is spelled across the back.

By Stephen Hiltner

An editor and photojournalist for the Travel section, Stephen Hiltner spent a month exploring Saudi Arabia for a story that published in early June.

When my Travel story about Saudi Arabia was published online last week, some readers bristled.

Why, they wanted to know, had The New York Times’s Travel team devoted so much time and effort to a country whose authoritarian government has committed grievous human rights abuses? Why did the kingdom deserve our attention? How much had the government paid us for our coverage?

The last question is the easiest to answer: Accepting money (or any other benefit) in exchange for coverage is strictly prohibited by The Times’s ethics guidelines . We simply don’t do it.

But in the context of Saudi Arabia, I can understand why readers wonder. While reporting the story, I learned about the incredible extent to which the Saudi government and its tourism officials have paid online influencers — those on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube — to visit the country and share overly simplified accounts of carefully curated experiences. Such an arrangement creates incentives to focus on the positive aspects of the country and leave out anything that paints a more complicated picture. And so social media is awash with glossy, one-sided content from the kingdom — which you might not realize, because the arrangements that produce it often aren’t disclosed.

In my mind, that’s one of the factors that justifies our independently reported article about Saudi Arabia’s new tourism projects: The Times is now one of the few outlets where curious readers — and potential visitors to Saudi Arabia — can find a balanced travel story that acknowledges both the country’s profound changes and its continuing complexities, including its troubling track record with human rights abuses, religious extremism and the oppression of women and L.G.B.T.Q. people.

Why was the story assigned in the first place? To put it simply: It’s newsworthy. Saudi Arabia’s $800 billion approach to drawing tourists — by building vast infrastructure for nonreligious visitors on a relatively short timetable — is unparalleled in its ambitions. What’s more, it’s part of a broader set of goals to reshape both the Saudi economy and its society at large.

We’ve been hearing about Saudi Arabia’s monumental efforts since 2019, when it began issuing its first tourist visas . This year, now that the coronavirus pandemic has waned and more of the new tourist destinations are coming online, we thought the time was right to check in on the progress.

For me, that meant taking a 5,200-mile road trip — alone, without a fixer or a translator — that would bring me into contact with a broad swath of Saudi society. I wanted the article to reflect the country as a whole, not just its new construction projects. And I wanted to offer glimpses into the lives of everyday people. To achieve that, I visited several fancy resorts, but didn’t stay overnight at any of them. (Some cost well over $1,000 per night, which is way beyond the limit for a Times expense account.) Instead, I slept at communal campsites and booked rooms in budget hotels. My accommodations cost about $65 per night on average.

As for whether the kingdom deserves The Times’s attention: I’d rather say the kingdom warrants our scrutiny. To me, the word “deserve” connotes an element of moral judgment, as if a Times article were meant as a stamp of approval. And judging whether we morally agree with newsworthy events, or with the people driving them, isn’t part of the equation we use to determine what we cover. (By that logic, for example, people who committed atrocities might not “deserve” obituaries, even if they influenced the course of history.)

Ultimately, my job as a Travel journalist is neither to persuade nor dissuade anyone from visiting Saudi Arabia, nor is it to pass judgment on their society or tourism projects. My job is to explain what’s happening in the country as best I can, from the perspective of an informed traveler, and to provide cultural and historical information to help situate the present moment in a broader context.

So I attempted to do just that — in a visually immersive story that I hope offers a fair and balanced portrait of a country undergoing profound changes.
