You don’t have to stay home: Summer travel deals you can still book

Andrew Kunesh

This year, summer travel is expected to be busier and more expensive than in years past. Don't let this scare you off just yet, though. Hidden beneath the heap of expensive tickets and sold-out hotels are a handful of destinations where you can still find a reasonable flight or train ticket.

To help you get out and about without breaking the bank this summer, we've compiled these cheap destinations in this post. We'll update this post every other week throughout the summer, with new travel deals valid from June through the middle of September. So, bookmark it and check back for the latest deals.

This week, we have a variety of deals for you: from domestic jaunts to flights to Europe. There's something for everyone, and all flights are well under $500. In fact, some are under $100 round trip.

Here's the line-up of some affordable trips this summer so you can get to booking.

Fly to Toronto without breaking the bank

Canada has recently seen an influx of new low-cost carriers starting service to/from the U.S., including Flair and Swoop . In turn, this brings affordable flights to our neighbor up north to Americans.

For example, Flair is offering flights from Chicago to Toronto for as low as $118 throughout the summer.

Or, you can book Swoop from New York to Toronto for under $150 round trip.

Canada's quirkiest carrier, Porter, is offering flights from Boston to Toronto for roughly $211 in late August.

You could then pair these affordable flights with a stay on Hyatt points at the recently renovated Park Hyatt Toronto.

Head to Mexico from Texas

Texans, listen up: Right now, you can book flights to Mexico for under $250 round trip.

Those based in Austin, Dallas and Houston can leverage budget carriers like Frontier, Spirit and VivaAerobus to fly to Cancun and Mexico City.

Austinites will find Cancun tickets for $250 or less round trip in July and August on Spirit Airlines. Budget in a little extra for bags and a snack, if needed, and you'll be on your way to a relaxing long weekend away in no time. (Here's how you skip the bag fee and maximize the free Spirit carry-on .)

Houstonians can take advantage of reasonably priced Spirit tickets to Cancun, too, with flights starting pricing at under $200 round trip in July and August. Or, you can fly to Mexico City with VivaAerobus or Volaris for under $200 round trip in July. Here are some tips for what to eat and drink in Mexico City if you make the trip.

Or, you can book a last-minute June adventure from Boston to Berlin via Iceland with Play for roughly $400.

Domestic flights deals exist

Despite higher-than-average airfare, we also found low-cost domestic flights on select routes. Not surprisingly, the majority of lower-cost fares are found on low-cost carriers. However, some routes have deals on the Big 3 U.S. carriers, too.

From Denver, you can fly Frontier to Las Vegas for as little as $60 round trip or Salt Lake City for just under $80 this June.

If you're a New Yorker, jet to Nashville for under $100 with Spirit on various dates in June. Here are some tips on where to stay if you head to Music City .

Looking to see the Carolinas this June? You can take Delta, JetBlue or United from New York to Charleston for roughly $175 round trip on select dates.

travel deals this summer

Moving onto July dates, Chicago to Miami, Orlando and Atlanta can all be booked for under $200 round trip with various airlines. The majority of these flights are on low-cost carriers. However, Delta and American operate cheap flights to New York on various dates.

Going further west, you can score tickets between Austin and San Diego for under $150 round trip with Allegiant on select dates. You can also find Alaska-operated flights in the low-$200s on the same route. Of course, if you choose to fly with Alaska, you could also leverage the co-branded credit card's companion certificate .

Consider Amtrak this summer

None of those routes strike your interest? Maybe you'd rather hit the rails instead.

Amtrak is chock-full of great deals this summer from many U.S. cities. In fact, if you're based in the New York City area, you can book Northwest Regional tickets for well under $75 round trip in coach. So, book a ticket and finally take that trip to Boston, Washington D.C. or Philadelphia you've been planning.

travel deals this summer

If you're based in Chicago, hop on a long-distance train to Washington D.C. or New Orleans for under $250 round trip this summer.

Meanwhile, in the Pacific Northwest, you can book trains from Seattle to Portland (and vice-versa) for as little as $55 round trip.

Bottom line

If you have some flexibility this summer and let the fares drive your destination decisions a bit, you can still travel this summer. It helps to be open to new destinations and avoid weekend travel as those dates are often the most expensive, sometimes by a large margin.

Remember: If you're interested in booking, act quickly. Airfare prices can and do change with regularity.

7 travel trends to expect this summer and how to beat the rush, according to experts

  • New CDC recommendations advise that it is safe for vaccinated individuals to resume travel.
  • After a year of canceled vacations, the new guidelines suggest travel is poised to make a comeback.
  • Experts told us where people are going this summer and how you can beat the rush and save money.

Insider Today

To date, 1 in 6 Americans have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 . And now that the CDC issued new guidelines recommending travel for vaccinated individuals , travel is expected to return in a big way this summer.

After all, warm summer weather and vacation from school will merge with a year of canceled vacations, likely resulting in pent-up travel demand in a way we've never seen before. Expect to see fully-booked hotels and what one car rental expert called, " the rental car apocalypse ."

In anticipation, Insider reached out to travel experts across the industry to find out this summer's biggest travel trends, plus how to find the best travel deals.

For more on safe vacations during COVID-19, read our guide to expert-backed vacation ideas during the pandemic .

"Now is a great time to book domestic travel. It's almost certainly going to be cheaper on average than it will be a year from now," said Scott Keyes, the founder and chief flight expert of Scott's Cheap Flights.

In the past few weeks, Scott's Cheap Flights , a membership-based website for flight alerts, found fares to Hawaii as low as $267 round-trip from Oakland, California, in addition to round-trip Delta flights to Alaska from Atlanta, Orlando, and Indianapolis for only $239. These flights would easily cost double or triple that price before the pandemic.

Adit Damodaran, an economist at the travel booking app Hopper , agreed. "We're seeing demand start to cluster in late May and early June and expecting prices to start rising by 15 percent," Damadaran said, citing a Hopper report that predicts summer rates will average out to $296 for a round-trip domestic ticket.

However, Keyes doesn't believe airfare deals will disappear. "I'm expecting fares to go up this summer, but that's because fares always go up over the summer," he said.

According to PROS , a company that uses AI to analyze search booking data for over 20 large airlines, now is indeed a great time to fly on the cheap. Surain Adyanthaya, the company's senior vice president told us, "Some fares are rising to destinations like Florida and Hawaii, but we don't believe they will rise completely to pre-pandemic levels."

"Everybody wants to go to Hawaii, Alaska, US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico because they're iconic," Keyes said. "You would think that increase in demand would increase the price, but because the airlines know everyone wants to go there, airlines are throwing their capacity on those leisure routes, which is why we're seeing more good deals popping up right now."

Adyanthaya added, "Since international travel is still somewhat suppressed, a lot of carriers are moving bigger planes to domestic destinations. Prices will be driven by consumer booking behavior and we're entering that period when people start booking their summer vacations."

If you're interested in flying this summer to any of these hot-ticket destinations, or elsewhere in the US, follow Keyes' advice: when a good airfare deal strikes, it's like lightning and gone almost as soon as you see it. And if you do fly, here's what you should know about safety .

If you've tried to book a rental car lately, you may have noticed that prices have gone way up and cars are harder to find.

According to Jonathan Weinberg, the founder of Autoslash , a car rental site that tracks car rental prices, this is because the pandemic forced many rental car companies to unload their inventory when demand dropped by 90 percent.

Now that more people are getting vaccinated and traveling, car rental companies don't have enough cars. Customers are also taking longer trips and working remotely from the road, which ties up the cars for a longer period.

"Airports in Florida completely sold out. Initially, it seemed like an anomaly, but the same thing was spreading to other areas," Weinberg said. "Hawaii was another and it's even harder to get cars there. Same for San Juan, Puerto Rico. People were canceling vacations because they can't get a car."

Weinberg also said that prices have doubled and tripled in popular areas, citing that daily rates for certain weeks in May in Miami rose to as high as $263, or $190 in Honolulu.

In remote areas, they might even be nonexistent. Weinberg told Insider that Glacier Park Airport in Montana is already sold out for the entire summer, which serves as a warning to anyone considering renting a car in a remote destination, book as soon as you can, at least a month in advance, especially if you see the daily rates have started to rise.

In rare cases, prices increased tenfold with rental rates reaching heights of over $500 per day because of high demand in places such as Orlando and Maui.

We tested this out too and found that a three-day rental in Maui over the weekend of May 14 to 17 returned daily rates of around $240 per day, plus taxes and fees, as of publishing.

The good news though, is experts say renting a car during the pandemic is safe .

Many travelers chose to stay home in 2020, or if they did venture out, preferred to book private vacation rentals on Airbnb to avoid interactions with others . Now that hotels feel safer , and have vigorous new cleaning policies , it's likely they too will see a surge in interest.

"With big-city destinations, we've seen prices remain stable going into one to two weeks before your reservation," Domaradan said. "For a more leisure-oriented destination, we recommend booking about a month or two in advance to get the cheapest prices. But as long as you're booking at least three weeks in advance, you'll avoid the biggest price spikes."

Hopper also tracks hotel prices and Domaradan confirmed that search volume has risen above normal levels for the upcoming Memorial Day and Fourth of July holidays, but that rates in vacation destinations are still down 20 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels.

However, prices are increasing the quickest in destinations such as Florida beaches, the Outer Banks in North Carolina, Las Vegas, southwest Utah, and destinations near the Smoky Mountains like Gatlinville and Pigeon Forge.

If you do take advantage of one of the aforementioned flight deals to Hawaii, hotels "are about 10 to 20 percent up from where they were in March, but not increasing quite as rapidly as those other destinations," Domaradan said.

If you're overwhelmed by the prospect of planning a summer vacation in what's likely to be a crowded and busy season, a prearranged small group tour is a nice way to eliminate stress.

Major tour operators like Intrepid Travel have debuted new itineraries along with  vaccination and testing requirements that apply to all trips. Travelers and tour leaders must show proof of vaccination or provide a negative COVID-19 test no more than 72 hours before day one of the trip.

According to Matt Berna, Intrepid's Managing Director of North America, their website saw a huge increase in traffic and bookings after the CDC announcement sanctioning vaccinated travelers for domestic travel. "We've seen our bookings increase over 50 percent from March to February." Tour departures are in demand and certain itineraries like the four-day Zion Ranch Stay itinerary , which "instantly sold out."

A prearranged small-group tour also guarantees that you have accommodation, which may be harder to find in July and August when summer travel hits its peak.

You Can Still Book Cheap Summer Flights to These Destinations

While the excitement of the  summer travel season is upon us, it’s coming with one major caveat:  high price tags on airfare . With  scaled-back flight schedules , strategizing— especially by booking early —is more essential than ever before. But even if you haven’t locked in your flights yet, it’s not too late to find that affordable summer getaway, if you know where to go.

“Entertainment meccas, such as Las Vegas and Orlando, provide consistent value, with especially good deals in the summer,” says Kevin Heery, Priceline ’s chief product officer. “There is widely available inventory at multiple star-levels and price points to cater to different interests and budgets.”

Broadly speaking, domestic airfares are going down, as Kayak ’s consumer travel trends expert Kayla Inserra says they’ve seen the average price over the last two weeks dip 23 percent, while international fares have gone up 11 percent during the same period. Even so, travelers who want to use their passports can still find flight deals.

We looked at data from both Priceline and Kayak, as well as Skyscanner and Booking.com , to hone in on nine of the best destinations still offering affordable summer vacations.

The Nevada city continues to be a top choice for Americans, appearing on all four booking companies’ lists. For Skyscanner, it was the top booked destination for the summer for roundtrip economy airfare for departures between May 1 and September 1, while Booking.com noted that it’s one of its top cities offering  Getaway Deals , as well as one of the most searched and trending locations for domestic travelers.

Despite June being the peak month for  Kayak , which named Vegas one of its most popular summer destinations, roundtrip summer prices from Phoenix start at $80 and from Chicago O’Hare at $166, with average round trips being $315. Priceline also noted an average nightly hotel at $130, making it one of the most affordable places to stay as well.

Madeira, Portugal

At the top of Skyscanner’s best value destinations for the year is Madeira, Portugal , which has seen a 22 percent price drop since the beginning of the pandemic—and also seen a 123 percent increase in searches, landing it on the booking site’s hot list for family travel.

The best days to fly to the islands off the coast of northern Africa are in August, according to the site , with average roundtrip flights from $588. Fares increase to $692 for bookings in July, and $776 for flights in June.

With bold-faced name attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, it’s no surprise this Florida city also showed up on every booking company’s lists for summer deals. Kayak called Orlando the cheapest summer destination for domestic travel, with an average airfare of $335. Meanwhile Skyscanner’s global travel trends expert Laura Lindsay said it was one of the top booked summer cities, with fares as low as $70 roundtrip in June.

This summer also brings the return of Southwest Airlines service from Boston; Cincinnati; and Jackson, Mississippi; as well as JetBlue flights from Worcester, Massachussetts. New service is also being launched from Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Avelo ; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Long Beach, California, on Southwest; and Providence, Rhode Island, on Breeze.

Taipei, Taiwan

Perhaps most surprisingly, Taiwan’s capital was also called out by three of the travel booking sites. It was the top trending international destination on Kayak, with a 344 percent increase from last year in booking searches, while Skyscanner called it one of the most underrated alternative destinations.

“This summer, especially now that Asia has dropped most of its covid restrictions, we’re seeing travelers venture further,” Heery said, highlighting Taipei as one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with hotel average rates at $130.  Skyscanner  lists August flights from $875. While served by carriers like United and Cathay Pacific, Taiwan own’s  EVA Air also provides top-notch service , as does the newcomer to the market,  Starlux Airlines, which just launched its first U.S. route to LAX , this spring, with  August rates starting at $901 .

Salt Lake City

“Typically a hot ski destination, Salt Lake City is prime for summer travels, too, with plenty of outdoor activities like boat rides, biking, scenic hikes, or visiting one of the many nearby national parks,” Inserra says. She notes that average airfare on Kayak is about $370, which is a 26 percent decrease compared to last summer.  Skyscanner also said that the cheapest month to fly to the Utah capital is June (specifically June 20 is the cheapest arrival date), showing the lowest roundtrip fares starting at $47 in June, $54 in July, and $52 in August.

The north Texas hub is one that “may not be top of mind, but you should definitely check out,” Heery says, noting it’s on Priceline's Top 10 Most Affordable list for both airfare and hotels.  Dallas , the self-professed “official home of the frozen margarita,” is filled with activities to beat the Texas heat, from water activities on White Rock Lake or Trinity River to Shakespeare Dallas ’ outdoor Shakespeare in the Park shows at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheater lawn, this year featuring Much Ado About Nothing , Two Gentlemen from Verona , and King Lear .

Kayak also ranked it as one the cheapest summer domestic destinations with $369 average airfare, with roundtrip flights from Phoenix for $190, Chicago O'Hare from $203, and San Diego for $320.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

“If you’re looking to travel internationally without breaking the bank, Canada is a great option,” Inserra says. While Toronto has roundtrip deals on Kayak averaging $405 roundtrip and Montreal for $492, Calgary, which sits just a bit more at $512, is a less crowded market, but offers  nearly 20,000 acres of parks , as well as hiking on the Bow River Pathway, biking around the  Glenmore Reservoir , or even high-speed fun on  one of the continent’s fastest ziplines . Priceline also called out the Alberta city for its low hotel rates, averaging $148 a night.

Cancun, Mexico

There’s a reason Cancun is such a popular beach getaway. Not only is it in the same central time zone as Chicago in the summer, but flight deals are not hard to hunt down. Kayak says that prices have seen a 20 percent drop since last summer, with average roundtrip airfares at $551. Prices tend to rise as it gets deeper into the summer, with $448 in June, $556 in July, and $575 in August.

It’s also one of Booking.com’s top locations for Getaway Deals, and among Kayak and Skyscanner’s top spots for international travel.

Manila, Philippines

For both Kayak and Skyscanner, Manila was one of the top international destinations. With high season being November through January, the off-peak season makes it one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with average nightly hotel rates at $123. Summer roundtrip flights will still likely be in the four-digit range,  according to Kayak , with a sharp drop of nearly $300 from July to August. That said, the booking site did find a one-way ticket between New York and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International for $458.

Here are some of our favorite summer vacation family packages to create awesome memories with your loved ones.

1. Summer of More at Gaylord Hotels

Families can take advantage of two promotions at participating Gaylord Hotels locations. During the "Summer of More," hotel guests can take advantage of promotions from mid-May through early September.

Gaylord Hotels are part of the Marriott Bonvoy collection of hotels so you can earn and redeem points for your stay. Each of the six locations offers spectacular atrium spaces, thrilling water parks and pools, unique events and entertainment and multiple dining venues.

The first package includes an overnight stay, two scavenger hunt booklets and two crafts in the Adventure Kids' Clubhouse. A second promo offering includes the above plus four tickets to the hotel's water park or a unique show. Details of each package and available dates vary by hotel location.

The five Gaylord resorts in the U.S. are located in Aurora, Colorado; Grapevine, Texas; Kissimmee, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; and National Harbor, Maryland.

2. Flight-included vacation packages with Hilton at Resorts World Bimini, Bahamas

Coordinating flights with a visit to a hard-to-reach destination with your hotel stay is quite helpful. Hilton at Resorts World Bimini is offering a package that includes round-trip flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, via Tropic Ocean Airways. The two- or three-night Fly & Stay package starts at $835 per person for a two-night stay with flights and accommodations.

Eligible onsite spending will rack up Hilton Honors points, especially when using a Hilton Honors-affiliated credit card during a trip to paradise.

The 4.5-acre Resorts World Bimini Beach area is similar to party-style beach clubs on other islands and a favorite of sun-seeking guests.

Another benefit of this package is that it includes complimentary access to visiting guest-performer events and concerts.

3. Free room upgrade and perks at Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel in Miami

Whether you're splashing in the ocean, playing in the sand or lounging at the pool, the Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, is the place to be. Guests receive a free room upgrade and bonus perks during their stay at this IHG-branded hotel .

The perks vary based on the length of your stay, but can include a waived resort fee , food and beverage credits, free valet parking or a complimentary poolside cabana.

Kimpton is a pet-friendly hotel , so you don't have to leave your pet at home during your family vacation. Plus, you get the usual Kimpton benefits, like complimentary bikes, free Wi-Fi and an evening social hour. Book and stay by Sept. 30, 2023, for this package.

4. Fourth night free at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar and SLS Baha Mar

This popular World of Hyatt Resort in the Bahamas is offering the fourth night free in a special summer package.

There are several hotels within the complex. Grand Hyatt Baha Mar is celebrating its sixth anniversary, and this special package includes free dining for kids under 5 and a $100 resort credit.

Neighbors SLS Baha Mar and Rosewood Baha Mar are offering similar family-friendly offers this summer, too. For example, the Rosewood Baha Mar includes an extra night for every three paid nights from May 12 to Oct. 31, 2023.

5. Save 25% on award stays at select Choice Hotels

Through June 30th, you can book your family vacation at select Choice Hotels locations with fewer points. Choice Hotels is known for budget-friendly properties, and this promotion makes planning your vacation even more affordable.

Rooms start at 8,000 Choice Privileges points per night, and more than 20 properties across the U.S., Canada and Europe are participating in this promotion . While the selection is limited, you may find inspiration (and a great deal) at one of these destinations.

6. Three-night vacation packages starting at $199

Holiday Inn Club Vacations is offering a three-night vacation package starting below $200. Guests get to choose one of 10 locations across the U.S., including Orlando, Florida; Las Vegas; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Williamsburg, Virginia.

The only catch with this IHG promotion is that it's a timeshare offer, which means you'll need to attend a timeshare presentation .

For those families willing to give up a couple of hours of their trip, you'll get a four-day, three-night vacation for around $200.

Vacation packages are $199 plus tax for a hotel vacation or $249 plus tax to stay at a Holiday Inn Club Vacations resort. You have 12 months to reserve your trip, and extra nights can be added for an additional fee.

Guest rooms accommodate up to four travelers which makes them perfect for a family vacation. Plus, you'll receive 10,000 IHG bonus points after attending the presentation.

How to save money on summer vacation packages

Family summer vacations can get expensive quickly, but these tips will help you reduce costs, so you can focus on creating lifelong memories.

Free night when redeeming points

Create your own summer vacation package by taking advantage of special redemption rules for hotel points.

Hilton offers the fifth night free on award reservations for Hilton Honors members with Silver status or higher. When you redeem Marriott Bonvoy points, you'll get the fifth night free , no matter what level of status you have.

IHG offers the fourth night free to all members who have one of the IHG's co-branded credit cards .

Use companion tickets for flights

Summer travel deals can save money, but you still have to get to the destination. Using an airline's companion ticket gets you there for a fraction of the cost.

The Southwest Companion Pass can be used an unlimited number of times, and you can change your companion up to three times per year.

Other airlines, like Alaska Airlines , Delta Air Lines and American Airlines , offer this benefit once per year through their credit cards. However, some credit cards require meeting spending requirements to earn the companion ticket.

Bonus points for travel purchases

When paying for your summer vacation package, use a credit card that offers bonus points on travel purchases.

While this won't save money on this reservation, you'll earn extra rewards toward your next vacation.

Compare flexible points options

Travelers often get the most value when transferring flexible points (like American Express Membership Points , Chase Ultimate Rewards ® or Citi ThankYou Points ) to airlines and hotels, but that isn't always the best option.

Compare the cost of an award reservation versus using your points like cash. Some cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , offer high redemption values when booking travel through the bank's travel portal.

Plan early to book vacation packages this year

When traveling with the whole family, vacation packages can help you make the most of your summer trip and save cash while racking up perks.

It’s not just about hotel points and elite status benefits. These packages are great add-ons to your existing loyalty program benefits and credit card perks to enhance any trip.

Monte Argentario in Tuscany, Italy—one of the cheapest destinations to head this summer?

As Google reveals that one of its most popular travel search trends is currently 'cheap summer vacations', there are lots of ways that travelers can find ideas to travel for less.

This is particularly important as Bloomberg reports that the post-pandemic travel boom, merged with curbs on hotel construction, overtourism and restrictions on Airbnb in many cities, is sending hotel rates sky high, especially in Europe.

It's also clear that travelers might be feeling the pinch. Vacasa, the home rental platform found that while 4th July and Memorial Day will be the big summer travel weekends, its poll suggests that some people have shifted their travel plans or planning behavior to be more budget conscious (81% of respondents), driven significantly by higher cost of living and inflation (74%).

Ways To Find Cheap Summer Vacations

Bloomberg recommends ignoring Instagram feeds for overhyped, over-expensive destinations and instead hitting places under the social radar for cheap summer vacations —in Italy, this might be the picturesque Costiera Cilentana, an hour from the Amalfi coast or the stylish but under-developed peninsula of Monte Argentario, just 90 minutes from Rome's Fiumicino airport.

If Italy still seems like too much on the beaten European track, Romania's travel star has been rising for a while, hot on the heels of the much-beloved (and still relatively cheap) Albania .

When Does ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3, Part 2 Come Out On Netflix? See The Release Schedule

A storm of 3 000 ukrainian bomblets blew up four russian jets at their base in crimea, samsung galaxy s24 series users really want to turn off one of its best features.

There are also alternatives to the hotel for cheap summer vacations. Bloomberg reports that European hotel rates have increased 50% since 2019, according to market researcher CoStar Group, so maybe a boat would be better value.

Alternatively, HomeExchange, the home swap website, allows members unlimited exchanges for only $220 per year, meaning you can travel relatively cheaply but also visit places that might not be quite so crowded this summer.

The U.K's Telegraph also advocates finding some of the nicest youth hostels or staying in a mountain bothy in Britain —these are remote shelters in some of the most breathtaking hills and woods across the U.K. that are free to use for just an annual subscription of $32 from The Mountain Bothies Association. There are similar refuge schemes across Europe in the most spectacular places—many also run a basic menu for breakfast and dinner.

Change your mode of travel for cheap summer vacations. Though there are cheaper ways to fly (the London to New York route remains one of the most competitive, if you are available to fly at any time) but one of the most inexpensive ways to travel on holiday this summer might be by train.

The Telegraph lists several examples, notably Eurostar tickets if you book a long time in advance (around $50 one-way)—it's sometimes easier to find deals if you book to Brussels and not London to Paris. The 51-hour rail journey from Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California can be had for just under $100 if booked in advance.

Inter-railing across Europe can be cost-effective or you can take the train on a 28-hour, 1,300-mile journey from New Delhi to Goa for just $13 (first class is only $67)—and it can cost less than a dollar to travel across parts of the Himalayas.

Change your mode of finance for cheap summer vacations. One final way of limiting the damage is to use multi-trip travel insurance (if you travel often) and definitely go for a bank card that doesn't add on charges for overseas use and find one that charges lower fees when transfering between different exchange rates.

WalletHub shares this year's perfect getaways that won't break the bank

Erika Mailman

Summer’s just a heartbeat away. If you’re stuck in your cubicle, or you’re a teacher showing movies for the next week or so, or maybe you’re a high-powered CEO getting off your private jet: you’re fantasizing about the beach or a tent pitched in the wilderness...or a visit to the big metropolis you’ve always dreamed of.

According to personal-finance website WalletHub , nearly 82 percent of Americans plan to take a trip this summer (hopefully the remaining 18 percent aren’t traveling this summer because they already took off in the winter!). And close to half of those who plan to travel will take more than one trip (42 percent). That’s a whole lot of us—whether it’s far-flung travel or just renting a weekend space an hour away. We personally love the day trip turned into an overnight trip. WalletHub studied 100 metro areas, using 41 metrics, to come up with its list of the perfect summer getaways, considering our budgets and hopes to have a great time without credit card trauma down the road. The metrics were details like the average price of a two-person meal, the city's tennis courts and beer gardens, and average gas prices: you get the idea. It’s a great way to get a quick look at how a city measures up to others around the country.

This summer, you will want to hit Atlanta , since it is the top scorer on this study. It did well in all categories, including not having many travel hassles and costs, having good weather and a fair amount of entertainment options, and doing well in terms of safety (having low numbers for property damage and violent crime). Take a walk on the BeltLine or visit the Coke museum, and enjoy the best of Georgia’s capital.

Second on the list is Washington, D.C. It scored first for safety and did well in the other categories. With parks, cherry blossoms, historical sites, and an incredible art museum , this city makes for an incredible destination. Did we mention that the Smithsonian museums are free and are open daily except for Dec. 25?

In third place is Orlando, Florida, which fulfills all the amusement park -meets-beach desires you’ve ever had. In fact, Orlando is No. 2 nationwide for best activities (the No. 1 spot is taken by urban Honolulu, which is fourth on this overall list).

Here is the full list of the top 20 summer travel destinations:

Moscow, Russia

You are here, about moscow.

Moscow is unlike any other city on Earth. It is the wealthy economic center for one-sixth of the world's land mass and has over 120 ethnic groups and nationalities. A diverse and vibrant city with a strange combination of traditional Russian architecture and newer Soviet tastelessness, Moscow is an adventure waiting to happen!

Reasons to travel to Moscow

But what makes it so popular among tourists is the concentration of Moscow attractions. When you travel to Moscow you definitely want to see the red-bricked walls of the Kremlin , to take a picture in front of St. Basil's Cathedral , and probably visit the world-famous Bolshoi Theater . All of these places are located within a very small area around Red Square , so seeing them on a walking sightseeing tour of Moscow is convenient and allows you to avoid traffic jams.

The concentration of Moscow's main sights is one of the facts that make this city a world-class tourist destination. The majority of its attractions is centered in one small area, and the Kremlin is the hub of this concentration.

These sights extend into the realm of fantasy and are a must to put on your Moscow itinerary: the colorful domes of the Cathedral of St. Vasily the Blessed, the neo-gothic consumer wonderland that is the GUM , or state department store, and the timepiece of Russia's New Year's celebrations, the Spassky clock tower, all tower over the beautiful Red Square.

The neighboring Kitay-Gorod, or "Basket-Town" (likely a reference to the construction method of the city walls surround it), remains a significant concentration of traditional Russian structures serving as a commercial center. The Bolshoi Theater, the Lubyanka, and the hotels that tower above the Manege Square all are situated within the Boulevard Ring, an urban open-space doubling as a heavily-trafficked roadway created after the Great Fire of 1812, the one that left Napoleon's Army starving deep within wintry Russia.

Moscow transport system

As Europe's largest metropolis, and the 5th largest city in the world, Moscow comes with its share of traffic blunders. It seems that all of the world's most expensive black cars are here, and that most of the city's car owners do not understand the difference between sidewalks and parking lots. Still, while the traffic situation leaves much to be desired, the Moscow subway is superb.

The advanced Metro system carries up to 3 million passengers a day and its trains run every few minutes. With stations that could rival art museums, the Metro is one of Moscow's great must-see sights. Travel in Moscow Metro at least once to see that there is nothing like it in the world.

Best time to visit Moscow

The peak of the Moscow travel season is May through September. However, you may prefer to savor Moscow tourism delicacies during the low travel season. The snowy winter months offer just as many entertainment options as one can find during summer.

You can celebrate New Year's Eve or see Russia's biggest ice rink on Red Square, taste blinis or visit one of the numerous winter markets. Any popular St. Petersburg - Moscow tour hides a handful of memorable experiences the whole year round!

Although the best time to visit Moscow is from May to September, the city in winter still enchants with its towers and lights. Its great celebrations on the day of the October Revolution (held on November 7, a discrepancy resulting from the difference between the traditional Russian Julian calendar and the Gregorian calendar in use around the world today), and New Years Day make it the place to be. Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

travel deals this summer

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations.

◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.

◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

Amazon Just Released a Slew of Genius New Travel Finds — All Under $50

Think Apple AirTags, Bagsmart belt bags, and Glow Recipe tinted serums, starting at $7.

travel deals this summer

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Weekend getaways, tropical excursions, and outdoor staycations are all on the horizon this summer. So if you’re on the hunt for new travel finds that’ll come in handy during your trip, check out this must-see Amazon list.

Amazon has tons of clever travel essentials, including several new items that just dropped for May. While the Hot New Releases hub doesn’t have a designated travel section, you don’t have to worry because we did the digging for you. That said, you’ll discover breezy dresses, nifty bags, versatile plug converters, and even Apple AirTags — all under $50.

Amazon New Releases Under $50

  • Apple AirTag , $25 (originally $29)
  • Larmliss Crewneck Short-Sleeve Tunic Beach Dress with Pockets , $23
  • Project Cloud Flat Sandals , $29 (originally $40)
  • Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Hue Drops , $35
  • Bagsmart Belt Bag , $11 with coupon (originally $20)
  • Simple Modern Mesa Water Bottle with Straw Lid , $23 (originally $30)
  • “Funny Story” by Emily Henry , $19 (originally $29)
  • Mapambo Travel Power Converter , $43
  • Monday Haircare Original Dry Shampoo , $7 (originally $8)
  • Taygeer Carry-on Backpack , $34 (originally $51)

Apple AirTag

Apple AirTags can locate your wallet, keys, or earbuds, but travelers particularly like to stick them in their luggage. Why? This way, you can keep tabs on your suitcase at any given moment, which will be especially helpful during connecting flights. This single AirTag, which was recently launched at Amazon, is durable, water- and dust-resistant, and is compatible with Apple phones ranging from the iPhone 11 to iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Larmliss Crewneck Short-Sleeve Tunic Beach Dress with Pockets

An easy, breezy dress, like this cute crewneck option , is just the thing to throw on as you head to the beach, walk around the resort, or sightsee with a group. Made with cotton and polyester, you’ll notice the dress is both breathable and lightweight, which is ideal for days spent in the sun. Plus, it’s designed with hidden side pockets to stash your phone, room key, or lip balm. It’s available in midi and maxi lengths, as well as 38 colors and prints.

Project Cloud Flat Sandals

With all that walking you’ll be doing this summer, it’s wise to invest in a good pair of sandals. These discounted Project Cloud sandals are a nice option; they have a memory foam insole, adjustable straps, and a non-slip outsole that’s great for stability. The sandals also have a wide toe box and a suede sole that’ll deliver comfort while walking and standing for hours. Shop them in five colors, including tan, black, and beige.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Hue Drops

If you tend to wear less makeup while on vacation, you’ll want to add this Glow Recipe serum to your toiletry bag. The formula delivers all the hydration you love from the brand’s classic best-seller with an added bonus that leaves skin looking sun-kissed. The hue drops have a slightly warm tint that goes on nicely, giving the appearance that you’re wearing, well, nothing. And even though this pick recently launched at Amazon, the tinted serum was already bought more than 2,000 times this past April.

Bagsmart Belt Bag

Anyone who hates lugging around a big bag will appreciate this Bagsmart belt bag that has pockets galore. Seriously, the bag has a big zippered compartment at the top, complete with several internal pockets to store lip balms, chargers, and micro wallets. It has a second zippered area for small items like keys and IDs, too. And because pickpocketing is no joke, you’ll love that it has an unsuspecting anti-theft zipper lock that’ll prevent sticky fingers from swiping.

Simple Modern Mesa Water Bottle with Straw Lid

Staying hydrated is a travel must, and if you don’t like drinking lukewarm water, this insulated Simple Modern water bottle will do you a solid. The number-one new release has a double-walled design to keep liquids chilled for hours, even if it’s out in the sun. It has a large mouth and a straw lid that flips downward to prevent leakage. It’s available in 24 and 34 ounces and comes in a multitude of colors, including bright hues like lime green and lavender, as well as classic options like beige, white, and black.

“Funny Story” by Emily Henry

Emily Henry’s “ People We Meet on Vacation ” was pretty much the summer beach read. Yes, this editor even bonded with a vacationer who was also reading the book at a resort in Mexico. So if you’re a Henry fan, check out her latest romance novel that just dropped at Amazon: “ Funny Story .” The book delivers a mix of humor, new beginnings, and a slow burn romance that’ll keep you on that lounge chair far longer than you anticipated.

Mapambo Travel Power Converter

There’s nothing worse than realizing your travel converter doesn’t work with the outlet in your hotel room. Instead of stocking up on multiple adapters, why not opt for this Mapambo converter that’ll work in about 150 countries, including Italy, Singapore, Japan, and Fiji. It has two U.S. three-pronged outlets, one USB port, and three USB-C ports, which can juice up multiple devices at one time.

Monday Haircare Original Dry Shampoo

You might miss a wash day or two while out and about, but that doesn’t mean your hair needs to look greasy. That’s where this recently-dropped Monday Haircare dry shampoo comes in. The dry shampoo absorbs the oils on your scalp with just a few sprays, so you can save the slickback for tomorrow. It’s formulated with strand-protecting keratin and has a floral gardenia scent that could totally pass as perfume.

Taygeer Carry-on Backpack

A stylish backpack that can hold all your weekend essentials? Yep, that’s exactly what this is. The Carry-on Backpack is large enough to hold several outfit changes, your intimates, mini toiletries, hair care essentials, and even an extra pair of shoes due to its 11-by-17-inch build. But that’s just in the main compartment. It also has a double zipper outside with a cushioned pad for a laptop and tablet. The bag even has a luggage strap that can go right over your carry-on handle when you want a break from wearing it on your back.
