Rooftop Bars belong to the highlights of April in New York since they allow you to look at the thousands of lights of the skyline. The food market in DUMBO on 55 Water Street is just as successful as its other chains such as the one in Lisbon. The absolute best thing about the location is the view from the balcony. It provides unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline as well as the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge. April in New York: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

 TripSavvy /  Madelyn Goodnight

  • NYC Weather in April

What to Pack

  • April Events
  • Travel Tips
  • Frequently Asked Questions

Spring is one of the best times to be in New York City since the coldest days of winter are fully in the past and New Yorkers are venturing out again to local parks, restaurant terraces, and rooftop bars. It's not quite as warm as summer, but it's also not as muggy, which is a perk for those who don't like the extreme heat. However, spring weather is also notoriously wet and unpredictable, so you should be ready for anything.

In addition to the rising temperatures, there are plenty of events happening throughout New York in April to stay entertained, including some that are celebrating the seasonal blossoms popping up around the city.

New York City Weather in April

April is full spring weather in New York City with mostly sunny days, climbing temperatures, and flowers in bloom across the city. Days are often comfortably warm, but evenings and nights are still chilly so don't underestimate the cold after dark. Temperatures are also rapidly rising throughout the month and a visit at the end of April is likely to be much warmer than a visit at the beginning of the month.

  • Average High Temperature : 62 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius)
  • Average Low Temperature : 46 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius)

The only downside is that April can be rainy with an average of about 4 inches of precipitation. However, showers are usually short and intense, briefly interrupting a month of generally sunny weather instead of watering it down. There is also very little humidity this time of year, so when it's not raining, the air is clear and crisp.

April weather is fickle in New York, so pack a varied wardrobe and be sure to check the forecast before leaving. Staples like T-shirts, jeans, sweaters, and jackets are the go-to clothing items, but you should also throw in some shorts in case the weather is warm enough to sit out in the park. Most important are some comfortable closed-toe shoes for walking around the city, ideally ones that are water-resistant in case you get caught in a rainstorm.

A compact umbrella may be nice to carry around in case it starts raining, but it can also be a hindrance when navigating busy streets or getting on the subway . If you forgo the umbrella, make sure you at least have a waterproof jacket as an outer layer.

April Events in New York City

Warmer weather means outdoor activities are more inviting. You can visit some of New York City's great parks , take a walking tour, or just enjoy taking a stroll down Fifth Avenue.

  • The Easter Parade is a great chance to have an "only in New York" experience. Millions of people walk down Fifth Avenue in their holiday bonnets on Easter Sunday and some of them even have costumed pets. Unlike most parades, this isn't an officially organized event and anyone can walk in the parade.
  • The start of baseball season marks the official start of spring for many sports fans, and there's no better way to celebrate than heading to Opening Day at either Yankee Stadium or Citi Field for the Mets.
  • Earth Day officially takes place on April 22, but NYC hosts a variety of events around town throughout the week to educate the public about how to live a greener and more earth-friendly life.
  • The Macy's Flower Show is a celebration of spring inside the iconic department store. The Macy's in Herald Square creates elaborate displays made entirely out of flowers and it's a sight to behold.
  • Sakura Matsuri is the name for the cherry blossom festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. It's one of the best places to see these bright pink flowers in bloom in all of New York City.
  • The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx stages its annual Orchid Show in the spring. In addition to seeing these gorgeous flowers, there is music, dancing, and food.
  • The Tribeca Film Festival is one of the premier film festivals in the world. This annual film festival has grown since its inception in 2002 and now features roughly 300 films with screenings at a variety of locations around Manhattan.

April Travel Tips

  • Many American schools have spring break in early April, especially when Easter falls in this time. The city may be extra crowded during the first half of the month with families on vacation, but the second half of the month is considered shoulder season and one of the best times to find travel deals.
  • Brunch is always a big deal in NYC , but the sunny days in spring make weekend brunch extra enjoyable. Seek out an outdoor spot on warm weekend days to enjoy the sunshine, or pick a restaurant with bottomless mimosas if you're looking for boozy brunch. Wherever you go, definitely make reservations if possible.
  • Make sure you have a Metrocard in case you need to get around and it starts raining. If you're staying for at least a few days and plan on using the subway, the seven-day unlimited pass is a great deal for easy riding.

For planning out your trip to New York City, read more about the best time to visit NYC .

April is an excellent time to visit New York City, especially toward the end of the month. Daytime temps are warming up, the city is blooming with flowers, and events like the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival and Opening Day at Yankee Stadium or Citi Field bring the city back to life after a long, cold winter.

In April, daytime temperatures are often warm, with New York City experiencing average highs in the low 60s. However, the average low is 46 degrees F, so it can be quite chilly in the early morning and evening.

NYC sees an average of 4 inches of precipitation in the month of April. On the upside, rain showers are typically short, with the weather being sunny in general this time of year.

Why Visit New York in April

Cherry blossoms lining the walkways in NYC when you visit New York in April.

If you’re planning to visit New York in April, you probably have a lot of questions. Like, which New York hotel should I book? What’s the weather in New York in April like?

And above all, is April a good month to visit New York?

Well, you’ll be delighted to know that April is one of the best months to visit NYC since the city is starting to move out of a long, cold winter into a warm, blossom-filled Spring.

So, NYC in April means that the city is returning to life again. Therefore, there are a lot of fun things to do in April in New York.

But crucially, April is also a transition month, or shoulder season, which means you won’t see the sort of tourist numbers that NYC has in the summer months.

So, why is April such a good month to visit New York?

1. Less Crowds and Shorter Lines

New York City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the USA, both for domestic and international travelers.

And this can mean that it gets very crowded, especially during peak summer months when the numbers of tourists around places like Central Park and Midtown Manhattan are super intense.

However, if you’re planning to visit New York in April then the good news is that prime tourist season doesn’t kick off until May.

So, the city will be a little quieter in April, which means less crowds and shorter lines for top attractions.

Of course, booking tickets ahead of time still makes sense, especially for any must-see attractions or popular events.

2. Fantastic Deals on Flights

Ground transportation sign and baggage claim sign for JFK International airport.

Flights to New York in April are generally cheaper than flights in the summer or right before Christmas.

However, it’s still a good idea to search for flights as soon as possible since prices will increase as you get closer to your planned travel dates.

Now, if you’re a domestic visitor, cheap flights are available to JFK, Newark, or La Guardia from pretty much anywhere in the US.

And if you’re traveling light, you can find some really great deals on flights to New York.

In contrast, international travelers need to do a little more work. However, there are still some fantastic deals on flights to NYC to be found.

So, instead of only searching for direct flights, try searching for flights via a major hub airport to help you find cheaper flights to the US.

3. Hotel Rates are More Affordable

Two major advantages of visiting New York in April are the availability and affordability of hotel rooms in New York City.

See, April is right at the tail end of the quiet winter/early spring season in NYC since the number of tourists in the city starts to swell come May.

Therefore, this means more hotel rooms will be available for your visit to New York in April compared to the peak tourist season between May and September.

As a result, hotels often reduce their April rates to try and fill empty rooms, which means better deals for you!

Best Things to do in New York in April

There are tons of fun and unique things to do in NYC regardless of when you visit. But, if you are visiting New York City in April, it feels like there’s even more fun to be had.

After all, spring is finally here and it’s time to enjoy the great outdoors once again as you tackle some of the best hikes near NYC .

Of course, there are year-round things to do when you visit New York in April. You know, classic NYC tourist activities like visiting the Statue of Liberty or going up to the observation deck at the Empire State Building .

But, there are also some seasonal activities and things to do in NYC in April. So, here are some of the best things to do when you visit New York in April:

1. Explore the New York City Food Scene

seasonal americam fare

As the weather gets warmer in April, you’ll see New York’s outdoor dining scene come to life.

Therefore, the streets outside of local restaurants will fill up with tables, as the air fills with the chatter of eager outdoor diners since eating outdoors becomes a more appealing option.

In fact, Smorgasburg open-air food market runs weekly in Williamsburg, Prospect Park, and the World Trade Center is worth checking out at this time of year.

So much so that thousands of people visit weekly to sample tasty treats from various food stalls.

And, FYI, I’m a huge fan of the Mantu from Nansense and the Italian Rainbow Cookie ice cream from Bona Bona.

Anyway, April is also an ideal time of year to book a food tour of New York , as the city is less crowded than in the summer months.

So, be sure to grab a slice (Lombardi’s) and hot dog (Grey’s Papaya for the win) from one of the many food stands around the city since they’re some of the must-eat foods in NYC .

2. See a Broadway Show

Times Square during 4 days in New York itinerary

Of course, you can see a Broadway show at any time of the year but more affordable tickets are another great bonus of visiting NYC in April.

See, Broadway theaters are keen to fill as many seats as possible for each performance. And while they offer some discounted tickets all year long, there are fewer flash deals around in the summer months.

However, you can check out sites like Get your Guide to see what deals are available during your April visit to New York, or head to Times Square to snap up tickets on the day from the TKTS Ticket Booth (TodayTix is also a great app that you can use to instantly get cheap Broadway tickets).

Also, don’t forget to check out the shows playing in smaller off-Broadway theaters as well. They might not be the big names that you’ll see on Broadway, but you can still see a fantastic show.

3. Macy’s Flower Show

Springtime in New York City really starts with the spectacular flower show at Macy’s in Herald Square.

After all, you’ll see extravagant displays of over 30,000 different varieties of trees and flowers.

Add in cooking and centerpiece design demonstrations, workshops, and competitions, and you have one of the best things to do in NYC in April.

Plus, entrance to the Macy’s Flower Show is free, and guided tours are also available if you want to learn more about the exhibits.

4. Easter Parade

If your April visit to New York coincides with Easter weekend, be sure to catch New York’s famous Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival on Fifth Avenue.

If you just want to watch the Easter Parade though, St Patrick’s Cathedral offers the best views.

But why not take part in the festivities yourself? All you need to join the parade is your own unique Easter Bonnet!

And when the parade is over, you can head to one of the area’s restaurants for a delicious Easter brunch.

5. Easter Egg Hunts

The traditional cherry blossom festival in Japan is a fabulous Spring celebration. And now you too can join in on the festivities at NYC’s Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

Because in addition to viewing these beautiful bright pink flowers, this NYC April favorite also includes cultural performances, shopping opportunities, family-friendly fun, and more.

The festival is very popular though, so be sure to buy your tickets for this fantastic event well in advance.

You can also visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden website to see how the blossoms are developing on their cherry blossom tracker.

7. Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated each April 22nd, and New York hosts many events in April that tie into the theme of protecting/preserving the planet.

So, over in Union Square, you can watch live performances, learn how to live a more earth-friendly life, and take part in activities with an environmental angle.

Yup, there’s sure to be something exciting going on during your visit.

8. Visit a New York Museum

You could also try and catch an NBA Basketball game or an NHL ice hockey game. In fact, the playoffs begin in April in for both sports. So, check to see if any New York teams are involved.

Local Tip: Use Stubhub and search for sporting event tickets just a few hours before the game. Prices are usually super reduced as sellers try to get rid of all their remaining tickets.

What’s the Weather in New York for April?

The fountain at Bryant Park in the evening with the New York library in the background.

The weather can change throughout April in New York City, and you’ll probably see better weather if you plan your visit towards the end of the month.

However, in general, April days are usually comfortably warm, with the New York temperature in April ranging between 46°F and 62°F (8°C and 17°C).

That being said, early morning and nighttime temperatures can still be quite chilly, with the temperature feeling lower on a windy day since the grid-style blocks in NYC act like wind tunnels.

Additionally, April can be pretty rainy. But, you’re much more likely to see a short, intense rain shower than a prolonged downpour.

Also, because humidity is relatively low in April, the air will feel crisp when it’s not raining. Plus, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll see any April snow in NYC!

What to Wear in April in New York

Because the April weather in New York can be unpredictable, it’s best to give yourself plenty of options and check the weather forecast RIGHT before you visit.

However, it should be safe to leave your winter clothes at home. So, no need to pack gloves and a scarf.

Still, April in New York can feel cool in the mornings and evenings, especially if you go up on an observation deck to enjoy the best views in NYC .

Therefore, light layers are the best way to go and packing for New York in April means T-shirts, jeans, sweaters, and jackets.

But, if the weather forecast for your trip is warm and sunny, you might also want to throw in some shorts to wear to the park.

Additionally, comfortable closed-toe shoes are vital for walking around the city. Also be sure to take water-resistant ones if possible, just in case you get caught in the rain.

A lightweight, waterproof jacket is also helpful to have on hand, but you won’t want to be carrying anything too bulky around the city.

As a result, something like this NORTH FACE Women’s Venture 2 Waterproof Hooded Rain Jacket would be ideal as it packs down into its very own mini storage pouch.

A compact umbrella can also be handy when it starts raining but can end up being a nuisance on busy streets or when you’re riding the subway. So, whether or not you pack one is a personal choice.

By the way, if you are planning to use the subway a lot during your visit to New York, the 7-day unlimited Metrocard is a great value way to get around the city.

You can buy a Metrocard from one of the MetroCard ticket machines which are in most subway stations.

Local Tip: It’s worth noting that they are slowly phasing out MetroCards. So, as of now, you can use a contactless credit card to pay for public transportation.

And when you purchase twelve rides using the same device/bank card within one week, all your additional rides are automatically free.

If you visit New York City in April you can expect mixed weather, fewer crowds, lower hotel prices and cherry blossoms blooming. We’ve lived in NYC in April and we think it’s a great time of year for you to visit if you want to avoid overcrowding and save money, as long as you don’t mind risking cold temperatures.

In this guide we walk you through the 10 most important things you should know about visiting New York City in April based on our experiences.

Our NYC Experience

Tourists with cameras standing next to each other taking a photo into a mirror with lots of silver balloons on the ceiling behind

We lived in New York City between December 2020 and April 2021, and we’ve revisited many times since, including in April 2022. During our extensive time spent in the city we’ve seen and done almost everything there is to do. It’s one of our favorite places on the planet and we’ve written lots of NYC travel guides to help you plan various aspects of your visit.

What we love about New York in April is that the city is transitioning out of its cold and snowy winter season, green grass and cherry blossoms are bursting into color and the atmosphere begins to buzz once again. But it’s still the shoulder season, so you can pick up great deals on flights and hotels, and top attractions remain quiet, which is a huge deal! Read more about us .

New York City is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, so naturally it attracts year round crowds. But some months are busier than others, and the good news for your visit in April is that it’s a transition month so you get some of the major benefits without most of the drawbacks, including crowds.

April is typically busier than March, but not as busy as May when the numbers really begin to increase. If you’re deciding between visiting NYC in spring or summer, you can rest assured that the crowds in April will be far fewer compared to the likes of July or August.

Our Experience : We found April to be almost perfect for exploring the city’s attractions and neighborhoods crowd-free and in reasonable weather conditions. There were no lines at observation decks or museums, we could walk straight into most restaurants and hotels had low occupancy rates, so they were priced more reasonably.

Annual Visitors

In 2019 New York City hosted 66.6 million tourists with roughly 1 in 5 visitors being international travelers. It was a record high but it marked the end of 10 years consistent growth because of the covid lockdowns in 2020.

This NYC tourism and conventions pdf shows that visitor numbers have steadily been returning since the end of the lockdowns, and it’s expected that 2024 will be the first year to surpass 2019 and become a new record year of tourism in New York City.

What Does That Mean For You?

Well, it means that NYC is going to be even more overrun by tourists in the years to come. Crowds will be bigger than ever at top attractions and hotels will likely increase prices as demand begins to offset supply. But visiting in the should season month of April means you should be just ahead of the rush.

Rainy weather wet road and cars in New York City during April when weather is wettest

New York City’s weather transitions from cold to cool in April, with a 10 degrees Fahrenheit increase in average high and low temperatures from the start to the end of the month. April is also the wettest month of the year in NYC, which means the risk of rainfall scuppering your plans is a factor to consider. And lastly, you’re very unlikely to see any snowfall in April, so you’d need to visit earlier in the year to see snow.

Our experience : During the month of April we’ve experienced lots of different weather systems in New York, including freezing cold but clear blue sky days, non-stop rainy days and beautifully warm days when shorts and t-shirts were perfect. So, the key is to pack lots of layers!

NYC April Temperatures

Here are the high, low and average New York City temperatures in April:

April 1st :

  • High Temperature – 56°F (13°C)
  • Average Temperature – 48°F (9°C)
  • Low Temperature – 42°F (6°C)

April 30th :

  • High Temperature – 67°F (19°C)
  • Average Temperature – 59°F (15°C)
  • Low Temperature – 51°F (11°C)

Source : Weather Spark

So as you can see, there’s a fairly significant increase in average temperatures throughout the month, which means visiting later in April will give you a better chance of warmer weather. To finish, one of our top tips to consider is that the grid-style streets in Manhattan are like wind tunnels, so when the wind picks up it can make the “real feel” temperature plummet significantly.

The magic combination of lower occupancy rates and lower average nightly costs for hotel rooms in Manhattan and Brooklyn is up there with the very best reasons to plan a vacation to New York City in April. There’s hundreds of hotels that will fill between June and September, but they’ll be much emptier during your trip in April, so you can take advantage of great deals.

Our experience : We’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in New York over the years, and we’ve found that it’s definitely a place that heavily inflates prices based on seasonality. In winter and through April, we were able to stay at quality hotels with excellent guest ratings for prices that we felt offered good value for money. And we’ve written about the best NYC hotels our site Best Hotels Anywhere if you need help figuring out where to stay.

Hotel Recommendations

If it’s going to be your first visit to New York, we recommend booking a hotel around Midtown Manhattan near Times Square, Bryant Park or the Empire State Building. This way you’ll have a central location, lots of transport links and countless places to eat out.

Here’s four excellent Midtown hotels to consider:

  • The Archer – One of our personal top picks near Bryant Park with views over Empire State Building.
  • CitizenM – Centrally located in Times Square, close to Broadway and Rockefeller Center.
  • MOXY NYC – Rooftop bar and good value between Penn Station and Times Square.
  • Cambria Hotel – Highly rated cheap hotel with rooftop terrace between Midtown and Chelsea.

4. The Foodie Scene

April is a fantastic time to be out and about eating food in New York City. The weather is beginning to warm, which means outdoor dining becomes more comfortable and you’ll see the streets fill with tables outside restaurants and cafes. But it’s still quiet enough to get into most restaurants without reserving months in advance!

Three classic NYC foods you can’t miss include pizza, breakfast bagels and hotdogs from a street vendor. If you like food markets, don’t miss Smorgasburg , which is the largest weekly open air food market in America. Every weekend beginning in April, dozens of vendors set up food stalls in Williamsburg, Prospect Park and the World Trade Center.

Our experience : For us, it’s all about the classics. We love pizza and bagels, so we always try new places when we’re in town. And in April, we’ve always walked straight into any restaurant we liked the look of. It’s another huge bonus to visiting New York City in spring.

Restaurant Recommendations

Okay, New York City is home to some of the finest restaurants on the planet, and there’s thousands of cheap, expensive, unique, fun, hidden or exclusive places you can eat at. So we think you’d have to live in NYC for a good few years before being able to profess that you’re an expert on food in the city.

But we can offer you the following suggestions to consider based on our experiences so far:

  • Italian – Carmine’s Italian (Times Square)
  • New American – Gramercy Tavern (Flatiron)
  • Ukrainian – Veselka (Ukrainian Village)
  • Italian – Rubirosa (Nolita)
  • Korean – Thursday Kitchen (East Village)
  • Steak – Keens Steakhouse (Midtown South)
  • Deli – Katz’s Delicatessen (Lower East Side)
  • Bakery – Dominique Ansel (SoHo)

5. Expenses

View from The Edge NYC at night overlooking Downtown Manhattan with blue sky twilight during a visit to New York City in April

We’ve been traveling the world non-stop since 2018, so we’ve visited hundreds of cities, towns, national parks and excursions. And we think the whole “New York City is so expensive” thing is a little bit of a myth. Sure, it can be outrageously expensive if you make it that way, but it can also be done on the cheap.

And in April, you certainly can visit NYC without breaking the bank. It’s a great time of year to book cheap flights with low-cost airlines domestically or internationally. We already discussed cheaper hotels earlier but that’s another huge factor. And flash deals tend to run on attractions and broadway shows in the quieter months, so you can pick up discounted prices.

Our experience : During our most recent April trip to New York we booked cheap flights, stayed at a great hotel for reasonable rates and visited lots of attractions with our NY Sightseeing Pass which also had promotional rates because it was still the shoulder season. Overall, we don’t think NYC is any more expensive than other major cities like San Francisco, Tokyo or London.

How Much Spending Money Do You Need?

Well, we think everyone visiting New York City arrives with a different budget, goals and itinerary ideas. There’s no one size fits all budget calculator because you might want to eat and drink your way through the city, or you might want to just visit attractions and museums, or you might want to keep costs down.

But generally speaking, let’s say the average couple spends the following (excluding flights):

  • $300/night on a hotel
  • $150/day on food
  • $150/day on attractions
  • $50/day on miscellaneous things

So we think the average couple planning a 3-night and 4-day trip to NYC would need around $2,300 USD. But remember, you absolutely can do it much cheaper than that.

Here’s a few ways you can save money:

  • Book a hotel offering free breakfast to cut out one meal a day
  • Eat cheap pizza slices, hotdogs or truck stand food for lunch (not the healthiest but cheap)
  • Don’t splurge on dinner, keep it simple instead
  • Book a cheaper than average hotel (there are highly rated hotels at lower prices)
  • Stay away from alcohol, the drink price + tax + tip adds up very quickly!
  • Stick to the free attractions like Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park
  • Walk instead of using the subway every time

Finally, we recommend you buy an attractions pass like New York Sightseeing Pass or New York CityPASS to save as much as 30-40% if you plan to visit lots of observation decks, museums and attractions.

6. Things To Do

Woman walking over Brooklyn Bridge at night with maroon coat on in the center of the pedestrian walkway no crowds

Another great reason to visit New York in April is being able to do all of the same things you could do in summer, but without the crowds. So in terms of attractions, you wouldn’t be missing out on anything except nicer weather. And it’s also a wonderful time to explore New York’s neighborhoods because they’re not overrun by tourists, the air is crisp and the famously pungent smells of summer haven’t yet begun.

Our experience : We’ve been up the observation decks when they’re busy and it’s hard to enjoy the experience. Not being able to get a ferry time slot for the Statue of Liberty is frustrating, lining up just to get into a museum grows tiresome and standing in even longer lines just to get a bagel is worse yet! But in April we walked straight into everything with no line at all, which made a huge difference.

Top NYC Attractions

There are so many fun things to do when you visit New York, but here are some of the most iconic:

  • Walk around the famous NYC neighborhoods (free)
  • Soak up the atmosphere walking Brooklyn Bridge at sunset and night (free)
  • Explore the best spots in Central Park (free)
  • Take the ferry to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (cheap)
  • Visit several of the best museums in NYC (cheap)
  • Go up one or two of the best NYC observation decks (moderately cheap)
  • Watch a broadway show (expensive – but often cheaper in April)

Oh, and April has one more wonderfully unique activity that you can’t do any other time of year, and we’ll cover it next.

7. Cherry Blossoms

Seeing vibrant cherry blossoms bursting into life might be the reason you’re visiting New York in April, and we can’t argue with your reasoning! You can explore various parks and green spaces across the city to see beautiful cherry trees erupting into a pink light show.

Our experience : We made a point of finding as many cherry blossom spots as we could the last time we were in New York in April. Naturally, we thought Central Park would be the best place (and it was great!), but actually the New York Botanical Gardens in The Bronx had the most amazing display. And it was full of other lovely flowers so we highly recommend you visit in spring.

8. Central Park

Central Park is one of the most famous green spaces on the planet and we think it’s a must-visit for your trip in April. You already know there’ll be cherry blossoms in Central Park but here’s where you can find them according to Central Park :

“The cherry blossom trees in Central Park can be found mainly between 72nd Street and 96th Street, with the highest concentrations around the Reservoir , Cherry Hill , Pilgrim Hill , Great Lawn , Cedar Hill , and the area just south of Cedar Hill between 74th and 77th Streets.”

Our experience : Central Park is one of our favorite spots in the city and we always have a walk around no matter the season. We had a magical snow day in the depths of winter which felt like we were in a movie, but in April we actually found a lovely cherry blossom spot near Bethesda Fountain so don’t miss that area.

Where To Go

Central Park is gigantic and diverse, and there’s a lot more to do outside of photographing cherry blossoms. Remember that The Met, Guggenheim and American Museum of Natural History are on either side of Central Park. And if you only have to do one we recommend The Met .

Follow this exact path through Central Park:

  • Wollman Ice Rink
  • Bethesda Terrace
  • Wagner’s Cove
  • Strawberry Fields
  • Belvedere Castle

You’ll end up a few minutes walk from The Met. And that’s how you plan! Most tourists will only visit the southern part of Central Park. But we encourage you to explore further up, as long as you have enough time on your itinerary.

9. Photography

Vessel in New York City from below looking up with skyscrapers taller than the copper colored Vessel

New York City has one of the most iconic urban landscapes on Earth, and we’re confident you’ll be endlessly impressed by towering skyscrapers and unique architecture. But walking around New York with a camera is both a blessing and a curse because there’s a photo to be taken at every turn, every building and every iconic landmark!

Our experience : We’re travel photographers and NYC is exceptionally photogenic, so we’ve taken thousands of photos in the city and we’re sure there’ll be a few thousand more to come! We think any month is a good month for photography in New York City, so don’t forget your camera.

What Can You Expect In April?

  • Fewer crowds in April make photography easier and more relaxing
  • Much quieter at observation decks and top attractions
  • Cherry blossoms scattered across the city
  • Diverse range of weather including clouds, sun, rain etc
  • Steam billowing out of vents and drains on cold mornings
  • Brooklyn Bridge is quieter than summer at sunrise and sunset

10. Packing

Woman wearing jeans and a light coat in Central Park on a Spring visit to New York City in April

Packing for a trip to New York City in April can be tricky because the weather and temperatures can be extremely changeable. You’re likely going to experience cold, mild, warm and cold again throughout the day. And let’s face it, this is NYC, so you’re going to want options!

Some important questions to ask yourself include how much you plan to go out drinking and partying, how many classy restaurants you plan to visit and if you’ll be using the hotel gym at all. Then throw in your casual daytime clothes for walking (considering the changeable weather) and you’ll have a pretty full suitcase.

Our experience : We always try to pack multi-purpose clothes that can be dressed up or dressed down when we visit NYC. And we always walk as much as we can, so we wear running shoes with lots of spring and bounce during the day.

Basic NYC April Packing List

  • Underwear and socks
  • Shorts, pants, leggings, dresses and jeans
  • Moisture wicking t-shirts
  • Light and medium layers
  • Sweaters and hoodies
  • Smart casual gear for dinner and drinks
  • Even smarter clothes for upscale restaurants
  • Sunglasses and hats
  • Heavy coat, gloves and scarf for sunrises and sunsets
  • At least 2 pairs of shoes for walking and evenings
  • Camera, lenses, tripod and plenty of data storage

After that it comes down to your personal travel style. Some people like to dress up smart for walking around the city, whereas others go all out for comfort. There’s no right or wrong in New York, everyone just does whatever they feel comfortable doing!

The Morgan Conclusion

April is a fantastic time to visit New York City because you’ll benefit from a wonderful blend of affordable hotel prices and crowd-free attractions. Plus, you can see cherry blossoms and save money when compared to the summer months.

As far as we’re concerned, the only downside is changeable weather conditions and having to pack more clothes as a result. So if you’re happy to take on the risk, we can tell you from experience that NYC is refreshingly quiet in April, and you’ll have a better time for it.

What to Wear in New York City in April (Helpful Packing Guide)

By Antonina | Updated: March 18, 2024 | Leave a Comment

March Outfits for NYC, What to wear in April New York City, Spring Outfit Ideas NYC

If you’re planning a trip to New York City in April, you’re in luck. The city is slowly breaking free from gloomy weather and chilly days to make room for sunny afternoons and prolific cherry blossoms.

With the long gray days of winter in the rearview, what to pack for New York City in April becomes less daunting. If you need a bit of guidance, here’s what living in NYC for the past 8 years taught me about what to wear in NYC in April, let’s dive in!

Visiting New York City?  If you haven’t decided where to stay (yet) check out our helpful guide on  Where to Stay in New York City (10 Best Neighborhoods +3 to Avoid) . Don’t have time?  Here’s our favorite hotel in NYC,  hands down.

  • Visiting NYC in April (Average Weather)

Full of warmer days and pretty spring blooms, visiting New York City in April can sometimes feel like a dream. But you know the drill: “April showers bring May flowers” and that rings true for NYC as well. Brace for chilly weather in the early mornings (and after sunset), but (generally speaking) the daily temps are quite mild.

Expect average temperatures ranging from the 45-60°F (4-15°C), with the occasional rainfall. Late April marks the true arrival of spring, with average temps moving up to 50-70°F (10-21°C). This guide was created to help make packing easier and find the right outfits for early and late April in NYC!

  • What to Wear in New York City in April

Table of contents: New York City April Packing List

  • #1. Third Pieces

#2. Comfortable Sweaters

#3. base layers, #4. accessories, #5. comfortable walking shoes, #1. bottoms & basics, #2. light sweaters.

  • #3. Third Pieces

#4. Dresses & Jumpsuits

Post summary (what to pack for nyc in april), packing list for early april.

Typical Daily Temps (April 1 through April 15) : Range from 45-60°F (0-10°C). Rainy days are not uncommon!

What to wear in New York City in the Spring

#1. Trench Coat & Blazers

Between the chilly mornings, breezy evenings, and unpredictable rainfall, it’s safe to say packing an outer layer when deciding what to wear in NYC in April is crucial. Unless you run cold, leave the puffer at home and opt for more fashionable pieces like a blazer or trench coat instead.

Something lightweight that can easily be shed when the afternoon sun comes out will be key. If interested, here’s my go-to trench coat (it’s a great deal for the quality).

What to wear in NYC in winter

During the early days of April in NYC, a cozy sweater will likely be your go-to item. Look for something breathable to avoid discomfort from sweating, yet warm enough to wear alone or with an additional layer.

Try to bring two reliable sweaters you can mix and match with the rest of your outfits, something you feel comfortable wearing throughout the day. This gem is my tried-and-true staple, and has gotten me through many springs in New York City.

If helpful, here’s the exact sweaters I have on rotation in my wardrobe:

  • This sweater in navy
  • Cozy and loose cream-color sweater
  • My most complimented sweater

One major takeaway when it comes to packing for New York City in April is that layering is key. My two-cents? Stick to basics. By packing basic tees and long sleeve shirts, not only do you have room to play with outfits, you’ll also have more space in your suitcase thanks to the minimal space they take up.

As much as you want to tell yourself you’re going to wear that nice blouse you’ve been saving for a special day, trust me, you won’t. The added benefit to sticking with basics is that you’re able to mix and match your spring outfits. And you can re-wear pieces and switch up the look with accessories and jackets.

March Outfits for NYC

Speaking of accessories, when visiting New York City in April consider packing sunglasses a non-negotiable. Being outside for a long time without protection from the sun can get to be a bit too much. Pair the sunglasses with a crossbody bag that can be worn both day and night to save you space in your luggage.

Lastly, similar to sunglasses, a baseball cap is a great spring item to pack when visiting NYC in April. Whether you’re trying to hide dirty hair or just like the look, it’s an added layer of protection from the sun and it’s super stylish. You’ll find everyone rocking one of these on the streets in April!

Repeat after me, comfort. over. everything.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but those cute new sandals you can’t wait to wear in NYC this April are going to be the bane of your existence after one day. It’s not uncommon to walk five to ten miles a day when visiting the Big Apple, there’s so much to see!

Prepare as best as you can and pack those reliable sneakers or boots you know you can wear for hours. Now this isn’t to say you can’t pack the sandals, but set a realistic expectation and wear them to a nice dinner or a Broadway show instead.

If you’re keen to look fashionable while visiting New York City in April, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more stylish and comfortable shoe than the  original Adidas Samba .

Visiting NYC in Late April

Typical Daily Temperature (April 16 through April 30) : Lows: 40°F to 55°F to highs in the mid-60s to low-70s Fahrenheit (4 to 21°C). Less rainy days than at the beginning of the month but not uncommon.

What to pack for New York City in March

Spring in New York City is when your inner fashionista gets to come out and play. By mid to end of April, packing for NYC shouldn’t be difficult. With average temperatures teetering in the 60s and 70s (Fahrenheit), your outfits won’t be limited by the weather.

Plan to pack jeans, fun trousers, or cargos that you can reach for daily. Pro tip, pack a pair of bottoms that can easily be taken from day to night by swapping out the shoe. Sticking with basics and interchangeable pieces makes the transition from a day of sightseeing to a nice dinner seamless.

What to wear in NYC in winter

By the time late April rolls around, odds are you can ditch the cozy sweater and instead opt for a light cardigan. If you’re visiting New York City in the latter half of April I suggest packing something that covers the shoulders and gets you through the mornings, but by noon can be tied around your waist or tossed in a bag.

New York City Spring Outfit Ideas, how to style Annie Bing jean jacket, East Village

#3. Denim Jacket

The other option is leaving the sweaters behind altogether and bringing one go-to jacket to wear in NYC in April. For me, nothing beats a denim jacket! It pairs with any spring outfit and can be fancied up with a dress or made casual with a pair of fun pants. Another item to pack is a fashionable blazer that can help elevate your look.

New York City wine bars

You can’t visit NYC in April without packing at least one dress, that goes against every girl instinct we have! When the sun is out, there is no better outfit than a spring dress. Not to mention the ease of picking just one piece of clothing to wear is an underrated time-saver.

If flowy dresses don’t do it for you, jumpsuits are a great alternative. Both pieces can be dressed up with a jean jacket and block heels or can be made casual with a sneaker and cardigan.

If you’re unsure what shoes to wear in New York City in late April, allow me to help. As tempting as it may be to pack sandals when visiting NYC in April, closed-toed shoes are going to get you further. It’s important to mention that New York City can be quite dirty.

If you spend the day walking around in open-toed shoes, expect your toes to be anything but clean when you take them off. All in all, when you’re deciding what to pack for NYC in April, bring a pair of reliable sneakers you can walk in all day. If you feel the need to pack a nice shoe, do something realistic and keep the heel small!

Early April NYC Packing List

  • 2-3 Comfortable Sweaters
  • Base Layers (Long Sleeve Shirts & Basic Tees)
  • Accessories: Sunglasses, Crossbody Bag, Baseball Cap

Late April NYC Packing List

  • Denim Jacket & Blazer
  • 2 Light Sweaters/Cardigans
  • Fun Bottoms(Jeans, Trousers, Cargos)

More of a mountain person than beach, more of a culture-trip person than just visits! Having travelled to most of North India when I was a kid to backpacking across South India in my adulthood, I learnt that you often find your 'self' in the most unpredicted of places. And that is my inspiration to travel. To connect with nature, people and cultures. Books are my companion and I find my soul in trees. Music, yoga and literature is my passion. I often dream of attending a Peruvian wedding or living in a quaint Hungarian town for a while. When I am not writing, I would love to go hiking or explore the hidden valleys of Himalayas. Until then, some running and some literature is enough for me to get by!

The most expensive dates for hotels are around Easter & during spring break. That's because there is greater demand. As for the weather, one never knows but the later you go, the warmer on average it will be.

Pick one hotel ( any one for now) and look at prices for different dates you're considering, look at the week of the 17th.

I am going back at that same time to see an exhibit by an artist that I love. I'm going from Wednesday to Sunday. The week right after Easter was a bit more expensive than the 19th but not dramatically so. But I always look to save whatever I can so I will be there the 19th.

I would prefer the 15th I think. The later you go the warmer the weather "might" be. But a week or two either side mightn't make a lot of difference.

Check hotel rates for all your hopeful dates. You might find a cheaper date range.

You haven't said how long you'll be staying, but the longer you stay you could get a cheaper rate per night. Longer stay rates can be for durations from 5 days or more.

April isn't my favorite time of year to travel, but if the possibility of traveling at that time comes up, I avoid the weeks right before and after Easter.

Top 5 airlines flying to new york.

Friendly flight attendants. Comfort plus seats were very comfortable and had lots of leg room. 10A and 10 B.

Our flight to Zurich was delayed by almost 3 hours, so we missed our next flight. There was no indication it would be delayed this much. We were told the gate had changed and then it apparently took over 2 hours to load the "catering" on the plane. We were not compensated in any way for the trouble.

The 1st class male crew member was very pleasant - the short female with round glasses , maybe in 50’s had no personality- never spoke when delivering my food, drink, & never smiled the whole trip! In fact looked annoyed when the boarding proses was happening- I would never hire this woman - unfriendly . Have never dealt with a crew member like her-

A regional sized plane was used for a cross country flight with no overhead bin space. I had to "pink check" my laptop and my medications. I was NOT pleased!!!!

Best airline! Always friendly and welcoming. Skyclub was great and loved the fast free wifi on board. I also love that you can pre-order your meal on the app!

The gate area was incredibly short staffed, with one representative manning 4-5 flights, which caused a 3 hr delay in boarding even though the plane was all ready to leave. Other flights also were delayed because of this. The flight crew was awesome and I feel bad for the only gate worker on call, but Delta needs to hire more employees.

It was a crowded flight. They did the best they could.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

The walk from baggage claim to the taxi is very difficult for older people I will never fly into JFK again. It is physically challenging

Flight was delayed by almost 5 hours. Suitcase was not loaded despite the flight being near empty (my colleagues’ suitcases did reach JFK, unlike mine). Had to argue on phone to get JetBlue to deliver the case to my hotel. Never again

Great. Loved that there was WiFi on flight to keep in touch and excellent service of beverages and snacks.

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

Everything was good except for deplaning in NY. Took way too long!!

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

no wifi and the aircraft was very old with tiny 4” screens.

After we landed, we were held on the plane for 30 minutes. There was no one at the gate once we landed and we forced to sit on a plan that had already over an hour delayed.

Flawless trip. Pilot came out and introduced himself, welcomed everyone, made a light joke to put everyone at ease. Arrived quite early.

There was no screens on board AND the WiFi didn’t work. My seat was broken and couldn’t recline so I couldn’t even sleep. The flight attendants didn’t offer anything to make it more comfortable. It was such an old cramped plane, when the person in front of me reclined I couldn’t even open my tray table. All the United ads talk about guaranteeing everyone gets a screen!

Surprisingly easy! I was hesitant to try this, but the cost swayed me. I actually felt like I had less stress than all the taxiing and possible delays that occur with short regional flights where you spend less time in the air than getting to and from the plane..

We waited to takeoff for about 1 hour delay for a 20 min flight.

Packed in like sardines, very uncomfortable. Sitting the aisle my shoulder was rammed into numerous times by rushing flight attendants. Also flight was very cold.

Your app is impossible to use. I couldn't load it. Then i couldn't open it. When i finally got both those things done -with much help -then i couldn't open the app to install a credit card. The upshot was 4 flights without access to food or drink. When i first tried to download united app some company called starlier opened instead and i would up signing up for some 49 dollar a month music service which i still have not been able to cancel.

Overall it was good. The flight was bumpy at times, but the pilot made us aware every time. As a result, no snacks/drinks were made available. Seats were tight but that’s okay as I had a window seat.

the head jack on my seat didn't work and the power outlet didn't work for my seat

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

Wheelchair assistance was not complete. The person left me at the departure gate without informing the groundstaff of my requirements. I had to walk to the departure counter to ask for help to reach the plane door. The crew informed me that in future they were not allowed to help passengers like me, senior citizen and Wheelchair passenger with placing their carry on bags in the overhead compartments!

I liked that we arrived earlier, you could improve your snacks give away

Worst experience flying American Airlines. I fly with them often, so I was super disappointed in the service I received at gate 30 in LGA on May 24, mid-day. The flight was delayed twice. I was patiently waiting in the American Airlines lounge when I received the notice on my app that the plane was boarding 45 minutes before its newly re-scheduled take off of 4 pm (from the orginal 1:45 pm then 3:00 pm). It took me 5 min to travel from the lounge to the gate and when I arrived there at 3:20 flight gate attendant told me the flight had closed and that they announced for passengers multiple times. I showed them the notification on my app and they were really rude and unempathetic. The person who rescheduled my flight at customer service wasn't any happier but was at least helpful in getting me on the next flight.

Was lucky to have a employee at the AA checkin counter that had compassion and understood they ordeal that we went through with our original flight being diverted, needing to stay in the aircraft and then flying to the original destination; adding hours to the trip and forcing us to miss our connection and our rebooked connection. She was able to get up on standby on the highest priority on the next flight to the closest airport we need to be at and it all worked out despite being many hours late.

I like the boarding process, it was fast. The seat doesn’t have a TV for a long flight and food wasn’t served, just snacks.

Comfort of seats, ease of boarding. Food selection could be better

I arrived to the airport 2 hours before my American Airlines flight was scheduled to take off. I have TSA pre-check. The airport was crazy packed when I arrived. After momentarily standing in the pre-check line, the TSA agent said that I am not pre-check. Of course I said that I am because I entered my KTN number on all my traveling sites and programs. I had to get out of line and go back to the AA counter to discover that American Airlines did not add my KTN to my boarding pass. I had to call TSA to find out my number, then have AA enter it onto my boarding pass. The emblem would not load onto my boarding pass. By this time, I decided to use my Clear in order to get through TSA but the line was ridiculous long. By the time I made through TSA, I missed my 11:08am flight and was re-booked for the 5:30pm. This is after the AA employee told me I should have gotten to the airport early. AA use to be a dependable airline not I use them only if I have too.

Horrible people at the gate, they force me to check in my carry on, even thought no one behind me has to do it. I had to get out of the airport in NY to get my bag and go thru security again on my way to Honk Kong. The worst part is the employee threatened me with loosing the flights if don’t comply.

Cut off carry ons, had to check, got on and there was plenty of bin space. Disappointing.

One of the worst flights I have ever taken Delayed over an hour without communication from the crew; very scary Entertainment not working Crew NASTY cabin cold

May never fly American again Delay in take off WITHOUT EXPLANATION Cabin freezing Crew NASTY entertainment did not work entire flight

The flight was so short that the lack of leg room didn't bother me for long. The plane was smaller so only two seats per row and there were chargers. However, they didn't serve any snacks.

Could have TV/Movie and some water ou soda free

This was the return leg of my journey with Spirit Airlines. Despite its reputation, I found no issues as it got me from point A to B safely and without delay, especially with no mechanical delays, which is fantastic in my book! The staff, from ground crew to cabin crew, were all pleasant and hassle-free. The flight was smooth from takeoff to landing. I have absolutely no complaints about this no-frills airline!

Absolutely terrible. The boarding process had zero organization. Mobs of people trying to board. People were climbing over my child's stroller with her in it. No families were boarded first. Boarding was delayed with no reasoning or notification that it would be late. We were then stuck on the plane for 45 minutes after landing. Then waited over two hours for our luggage. There was zero communication with the travelers. Never have I experienced such I professionalism and disgrace of others. Extremely disappointed.

I had no legroom, although I paid for extra legroom. I could barely put my bag in front of my feet and under the seat. The Wi-Fi was horrible. In fact the flight attendant said that they had to reboot it and see if it was going to work and never did.

Overall it was a miserable experience... I will never fly spirit for more than a 3 hour flight or overnight.

Flight attendants heavily pushed their affinity credit card. Very annoying

Very bad, delayed flight. I was offered 2 vouchers for inconvenience, but those vouchers aren’t usable. Spirit airlines is betraying people.

They didn’t let me get my boarding pass through the app because I have a lap infant. The ticket said to see a gate agent but there was no gate agent available. I was supposed to go to the kiosk. Ended up missing my flight and they said that I never checked in to my flight so there was nothing that could be done. I will never fly spirit again. Not even worth the hassle and poor customer service.

I like the price. I did not like the seats: very little space and not reclining.

I like strict carry on policy. Quick to board, quick to leave. Less time at gate and get there quicker

Mar 23, 2024 • 9 min read

New York City evokes both high-rise luxury and savvy deals. But the best offer in town? The number of free attractions the Big Apple has to enjoy.

You could spend a lifetime here ticking off the best things to do  – but have you seen the rental prices? It's better to squeeze in a concert, museum or tour that's absolutely free.

Want to make the most of your dollars? Save our guide to visiting New York City on a budget .

1. See one of the world's loveliest final-resting places at Green-Wood Cemetery

Once the nation's most visited tourist attraction outside Niagara Falls, the gorgeous Green-Wood Cemetery was built in 1838 and today is the eternal home to some 600,000 souls. The 478-acre cemetery is leafy and lovely and features Brooklyn's highest point, Battle Hill – named after a skirmish during the Revolutionary War and now marked with a seven-foot statue of the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva.

Planning tip:  Watch for the squawking green parakeets at the cemetery's Gothic-style entrance pavilion; according to local legend, these non-native birds arrived after a mishap at JFK Airport in the 1980s and have called the cemetery home ever since.

2. Visit the moving African Burial Ground National Monument

In 1991, construction workers uncovered a burial ground filled with more than 400 caskets containing the bodies of enslaved Africans from the 17th and 18th centuries – an age when New York had more people in bondage than any American city outside Charleston, South Carolina. Today, tucked among downtown skyscrapers, the  African Burial Ground National Monument  offers a space for visitors to contemplate the past and learn about the history of the African American community in early New York City.

3. Discover unsung talent at the American Folk Art Museum

With objects ranging from photographs and quilts to weather vanes in its collection, the American Folk Art Museum is devoted to the appreciation and expressions of self-taught artists, spanning all eras. And perhaps appropriately for an institution devoted to the work of creators from outside the canon, admission is always free.

Keep museum-hopping at these institutions and galleries in NYC .

4. Hear sizzling live jazz at Barbès

Having helped to launch the careers of legendary jazz artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, New York City's club scene is enshrined into the pages of jazz history, and seeing a live show here is an essential NYC experience for music lovers. Iconic venues like the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note may be way out of your price range, but head across the bridge to Barbès in Brooklyn, and you can enjoy stellar nightly performances for free (tips for the band are always greatly appreciated).

5. Pay your respects at Grant's Tomb

This imposing granite structure holds the remains of the Civil War hero and 18th president and his wife, Julia. Built after a major fundraising campaign in the late 19th century, the General Ulysses S Grant National Memorial  is the largest mausoleum in the USA and was inspired by Mausolus' tomb at Halicarnassus , one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

6. See haute stuff at the Fashion Institute of Technology Museum

It's always Fashion Week at the FIT Museum , which features rotating exhibits by students and engaging exhibitions that draw on a collection of 50,000 garments dating from the 18th century to the present.

7. Admire the Bushwick Collective's curated street art in Brooklyn

Curated by Bushwick native Joe Ficalora, the Bushwick Collective  is an unofficial graffiti museum that brings together top street artists from all around the world. Spanning multiple buildings over several blocks, the art you'll see is all temporary, legal and a worthy rival to anything you'll see in a museum with four walls.

Planning tip:  The Bushwick Collective organizes a free block party every June that brings the whole community together to dance and listen to an incredible lineup of artists. Definitely worth a visit if you're spending a summer in the city.

8. Get a culture fix in the Boogie Down at the Bronx Museum of the Arts

A scrappy and vibrant institution on the historic Grand Concourse, the Bronx Museum of the Arts' mission is to promote cross-cultural dialogue and make art accessible for diverse urban audiences. Founded in 1971 in New York's northernmost borough , the museum collects and exhibits pieces of contemporary and 20th-century art spanning all mediums. The museum became free in 2012.

9. Savor each of Central Park's 843 acres

Even though the real estate surrounding this famous urban oasis is some of the most expensive in the world, access to Central Park is gloriously free for New Yorkers and visitors of all means. Since Frederick Law Olmsted's layout of the park was intended to be pleasantly disorienting, we recommend spending a few hours wandering aimlessly through its alluring paths, lush groves and delightful water features.

You probably won't want to miss the Imagine mosaic at Strawberry Fields , just steps in from where John Lennon was shot in 1980. You can also retrace the steps of  The Catcher in the Rye  protagonist  Holden Caulfield  by checking out the ducks in the Pond at the park's southeastern corner.

Explore Central Park's best hidden corners on one of these detours.

10. Gallery-hop in West Chelsea

New York's most concentrated area for a gallery crawl is in Chelsea, in the West 20s between 10th and 11th Avenues. From small start-ups to established institutions like Pace and David Zwirner , all galleries are free to enter, with no pressure to buy. Check out the Art Dealers Association of America's gallery guide , which has a comprehensive list of current shows, and create your own arty adventure.

Planning tip:  Plan your tour for a Thursday evening, when most wine-and-cheese openings take place.

11. Hop on a boat to bike around Governors Island

The ferry to Governors Island is free on Saturdays and Sundays before noon (usually a $3 round trip). Entry to the 172-acre island, now open year-round, costs nothing either. An eclectic range of attractions includes a 2.2-mile bike path, artificial hills offering splendid harbor views, a program of live events and rotating art installations, plus former military sites such as the Admiral's House and Fort Jay.

Planning tip:  Frequent (and free) guided tours depart from the Soissons Landing Welcome Center.

12. Admire Lady Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry

The Statue of Liberty is a must-see, but ferry tours to Liberty Island start at $18 for adults. Enter the Staten Island Ferry , which plies New York Harbor 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering a stellar view of this iconic monument at no cost at all. Having been in service since 1905, the ferry shuttles some 19 million visitors and commuters back and forth across the harbor each year.

13. See how the magic happens during a Brooklyn Brewery tour

Free tours of Williamsburg's Brooklyn Brewery run Saturday and Sunday every half hour starting at 1pm, with the last tour offered at 6pm. Linger a while after in the tasting room.

14. Catch a cool show at BRIC House and Celebrate Brooklyn!

In a part of Brooklyn humming with cultural activity,  BRIC House  is a leading presenter of no-cost multimedia programming, with free admission to two performance spaces and a gallery. In the summer, the organization curates the Celebrate Brooklyn! series in Prospect Park , with a majority of the concerts and performances – which in the past have sets from Chaka Khan, Janelle Monáe, the dancers of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and many others – free of charge, with no ticket necessary.

Technically a public park, the High Line has the feel of a runway, where New Yorkers and tourists (sometimes a lot of them) sashay for a stroll. Part of the slow, ongoing re-green-ification of Manhattan, this 1.5-mile-long elevated park, standing some 30 feet in the air, was created from an abandoned stretch of elevated railroad track.

Connecting the Meatpacking District with Chelsea's galleries before ending at gleaming Hudson Yards , it costs nothing to take a wander up here. En route, wonderful views open up of the Hudson River to the west and of pedestrians on the sidewalks below.

Planning tip: Hudson Yards has free movie screenings every Friday night in the public square.

16. Explore Native American culture at the National Museum of the American Indian

Situated in the spectacular Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House (1907), the National Museum of the American Indian , a branch of the Smithsonian , offers one of the country's finest arrays of Native American art. The focus of its million-item-strong collection, as well as its programs, is on culture rather than history – prepare for a visual feast.

17. Get inspired at the New York Public Library

New York's most famous library  (today known as the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building) is situated in a grand, world-famous Beaux-Arts icon east of Times Square. Guarded by marble lions named Patience and Fortitude, it's a jaw-dropper to walk through – particularly the Rose Main Reading Room, with space for 500 patrons to pore over tomes under the library's original Carrère and Hastings-designed lamps.

Exhibitions showcase the institution's astonishing holdings, which include a copy of the original Declaration of Independence, a Gutenberg Bible and some 431,000 old maps. Free tours  of the building and the Rose Main Reading Room take place throughout the week.

18. Attend a Shakespeare play

You can try your luck to win free tickets to Shakespeare in the Park, presented each summer in Central Park's Delacorte Theater by the  Public Theater , via the digital lottery and standby lines. You can also get your fix of the Bard – with some awfully romantic lighting – at Shakespeare at Sunset, produced by New York Classical Theatre at non-traditional public venues across the city, including Battery Park .

19. See a work of art made from 140 tons of dirt

No frame would be big enough for this. The Earth Room , Walter De Maria's 1977 installation, is a single room in a nondescript SoHo building filled with 280,000 pounds of dirt, combining the familiar confines of an urban space with the scent of a wet forest. Strange? A little. Memorable? Definitely.

20. Interact with the art at Socrates Sculpture Park

Overlooking Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side on the East River, the site of a former landfill now hosts  Socrates Sculpture Park , a playful and free outdoor museum and public park with large-scale interactive sculptures and multimedia art installations. On Wednesdays in the summer, free movie screenings take place, with an emphasis on foreign films, preceded by corresponding music and cultural performances.

21. Admire the world's first LGBTIQ+ dedicated art space, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art

Featuring works by US and international artists, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art is the first museum in the world dedicated to LGBTIQ+ themes. As well as rotating exhibitions and regular retrospectives, most of the art on show is from the gallery's vast collection. Lectures, performances and film screenings are also held here regularly. It's free, but donations are welcome.

On Long Drives and Sidelines, a Romance Blooms

Ally Moreo and Matthew Gutierrez met as student reporters. It was on a cross-country road trip that she knew she wanted to marry him.

The bride, left, is thrown back in the groom’s arms as they kiss on the grass in Prospect Park with trees in the background. She is wearing a bow in her long brown hair, and a white long-sleeved gown with puffed long sleeves. The groom is wearing a light gray-blue suit and a yellow tie with a print, and a yellow corsage.

By Anna Grace Lee

Alexandra Paige Moreo and Matthew Alexander Gutierrez went on their first date in April 2017, when they were sophomores at Syracuse University. But they had already been on many “unofficial dates,” as they now refer to them, while working together for the student newspaper.

They both covered sports for The Daily Orange, where Mr. Gutierrez was a reporter and editor, and Ms. Moreo a photographer and photo editor. On long drives to games, they got to know each other, first as colleagues and friends. Somewhere along the way, Ms. Moreo grew more interested.

“I definitely thought he was handsome,” said Ms. Moreo, 27, who goes by Ally. “He has these radiant blue eyes.”

On reporting trips, there was often a third person in the car with them. “I think every single third person knew I was into Matthew,” Ms. Moreo said. However, “I don’t think Matthew knew I was into Matthew.”

When a mutual friend told Mr. Gutierrez how Ms. Moreo felt, he started texting her more often. After covering morning practices for the Syracuse football team, they began to get breakfast together, chatting before classes. They had their first official date at Pastabilities, a restaurant in Syracuse.

“It was just a very flowing date conversation,” said Mr. Gutierrez, also 27. “There was no awkwardness or anyone trying to impress anyone.”

Toward the end of the semester, on the eve of separate summer plans, they became a couple. For the Fourth of July, he visited her — and her large extended family — in Hampton Bays, N.Y. Though meeting her family was overwhelming at first, Mr. Gutierrez quickly connected with them. “Right away I could just see how tight-knit the family was,” he said. “There’s a lot of love.”

That weekend, they lay on the beach under the stars, talking late into the night. “I think it was those conversations that really solidified to me that this was my person,” Ms. Moreo said.

In 2019, they graduated from Syracuse with bachelor’s degrees — his in journalism and finance, hers in photojournalism. Ms. Moreo is now a program manager for the National Geographic Society’s Photo Camp, working remotely from Brooklyn and traveling to camps. Mr. Gutierrez is a freelance writer and journalist who has written for The New York Times, The Athletic and The Washington Post, among other publications.

On a cross-country road trip in April 2021, Ms. Moreo knew she wanted to marry Mr. Gutierrez. For about three months, they drove down the East Coast, through the South, and to national parks in the West, in a 1995 camper van.

“That was in a very tight van, and we made it work,” Mr. Gutierrez said. Ms. Moreo recalled a particularly muggy, mosquito-filled night on Jekyll Island, Ga. “We were still having a lot of fun,” she said. In the summer of 2022, they moved in together in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.

That December, Ms. Moreo was helping to clean her grandmother’s house in Queens when she found a box of old photos that belonged to her grandfather, taken in Italy when he served in the U.S. Army. She had never seen the photos before, and neither had many of her family members. She asked her grandmother about the people in the photos, and she brought out letters from them, some dating back to the 1960s. At the time, Ms. Moreo was in between jobs and looking for an adventure. She took the letters’ return address and started planning a trip to Italy to find her family.

Mr. Gutierrez went with her, seeing a special opportunity in the trip. In January 2023, on their first day in Rome, he told Ms. Moreo that they had a tour planned at the Spanish Steps — but there was no tour. At the steps, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She was surprised, and said: “Of course.”

Later on the trip, they went to the address from the letters and knocked on the door, to no avail. But there happened to be a man walking by with a dog, and she asked if he knew her family. He called up his friend, whose last name is Morea, who came to meet them. She showed him the photos, and they realized they were related. They spent two days staying with her newfound family in Bari, sharing meals and stories.

The couple were married May 25 in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park by Jim Moreo, the bride’s father, who received a one-day New York State officiant license. Before 16 guests, they held a short ceremony under a tree, followed by an early dinner at Ottava, an Italian restaurant in Park Slope.

In more than seven years together, they have navigated school, graduation, jobs, distance, Covid and more. “There was never an upcoming stage of our life that we feared, because our life was constantly moving and changing,” Ms. Moreo said.

“It was just kind of like: Life is coming at us and we’ll take it together.” That became their mantra.
