Comedian Peter Kay has announced he is returning to stand-up before the end of the year, with his first live comedy tour in 12 years.

“If there’s ever a time people need a laugh, it’s now,” wrote Kay on Facebook when he announced the tour. “And, with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.”

The tour will traverse the length of the UK and Ireland, starting in 2022 and continuing into 2023.

This comes after the comedian already surprised fans with “secret” shows over the past few weeks, with audiences delighted to see Kay’s return to the stage.

Soon after the annoucement, Kay said that he couldn’t believe it had made headline news. “I should only be on the news if I’m dead, not if I’m on tour,” he joked.

“You’ve got to meet people halfway, it’s bad times, plus that’s why people need a laugh,” he added.

“I think that’s why it was on the news because it was something happy for once and not doom and gloom.”

In addition to his tour, Kay has announced that he will also be performing a monthly residency at the O2 Arena, at Greenwich. He will become the first comedian to be given his own residency at the venue.

“There’s basically been me and Prince who have done it and look what happened to him,” Kay joked, making reference to the US musician’s death in 2016.

Peter Kay has announced a monthly residency at the O2 Arena in London, which will launch on 16 December and run until 18 November 2023.

He will become the first comedian to have his own residency at the 20,000 capacity venue in Greenwich.

“Audiences in London have always been amongst the best in Britain, plus I think seeing the show could be part of a nice weekend away treat,” he said in a statement.

“It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now. And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.”

Fans had been disappointed after dates for his first UK tour in 12 years suggested Kay would not be visiting the capital.

The tour was announced during the commercial break of the first episode of this year’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

The 49-year-old has been largely absent from the public eye since cancelling his highly anticipated 2017 tour, citing “unforeseen family circumstances”. His last live tour was in 2010, when he achieved the Guinness World Record for the biggest-selling stand-up tour of all time.

“I thought we should've called it the Peter Who? tour,” he told BBC Radio 2's Zoe Ball breakfast show on Wednesday 9 November, as the London residency was revealed.

He joked “I should only be on the news if I'm dead, not on tour!”, referencing Prince’s record-breaking residency at the O2 in 2007. He also revealed that he had been practicing with several intimate warm-up shows ahead of the arena gigs. “I’ve done a few – people keep calling them secret gigs but they’re not secret,” he went on. “It’s first come first served.”

Peter Kay's new 2022-2023 tour announcement has been met with shock and delight from fans after the funnyman's nearly five-year stint away from the limelight.

The Bolton-born comedian dropped the shock announcement during the first advert break of the I'm A Celebrity launch show, dropping jaws across the country as he appeared on screen carrying a large rolled-up carpet.

In the 30-second ad, a man is shown filming Peter through his car windscreen as he shouts questions over to him.

"Hey look, it's Peter Kay. Hey, garlic bread!" the man shouts, quoting Peter's iconic joke.

"It's the future, lads," the comedian quips back as he wrangles the carpet down a driveway.

"When are you back on tour?" the man asks, and Peter replies: "Next month!"

After telling the man that the stand-up tickets go on sale this Saturday, Peter walks off carrying the carpet while explaining he'd bought his mum a bungalow but now she wants a new carpet - a callback to his last tour titled Mum Wants A Bungalow.

An off-screen voice then announced the comedian's first live stand-up tour in 12 years.

How to get Peter Kay tour tickets

Tickets to the Car Share star's tour go on sale at 10am on Saturday November 12.

They will be available through gigsandtours.com , ticketmaster.co.uk ticketmaster.ie and peterkay.co.uk .

How much are Peter Kay tour tickets?

As part of the announcement of his tour, the comedian also gave fans some welcome news: he was slashing the price of his tickets.

"It's good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now," he said.

"And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010."

The 22-date tour is scheduled to take place between December 2022 and August 2023, although some months have just one or two dates. All of them are scheduled on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and there are no venues in the south of England that have been picked to host his performances.

Peter's last live stand-up tour in 2010 holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest-selling comedy tour of all time, in which 1.2 million people came to watch him perform.

He was set to smash his own record with a sold-out live arena tour in 2017 but in December of that year shocked fans by cancelling the entire run due to personal reasons .

"Due to unforeseen family circumstances I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects," he tweeted.

"This unfortunately includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance For Life shows and any outstanding live work commitments.

"My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first.

"I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media. I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again I’m very sorry."

Peter has previously spoken about the impact touring has on his family - wife Susan Gargan, their eldest son Charlie and their two other children, whose names have never been made public.

"Once you have a family, the only downside of touring is touring," he one said.

It's believed the family temporarily moved to Tipperary in Ireland after he quit showbiz in 2017.

Since then, Peter has made sporadic public appearances for his charity dance-a-thons and in two special episodes of his sitcom Peter Kay's Car Share, which aired in May 2018.

Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story documentary about Liza Minnelli

There must be something in the air lately because I have been seeing and reviewing a number of really good and intriguing documentaries on iconic showbiz figures. At Cannes I saw new docus on Faye Dunaway ( Faye) , Elizabeth Taylor ( Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes ) and others on Michel LeGrand and Jacques Demy. Currently on Max you can see a wonderful docu on the great Albert Brooks directed by his longtime friend Rob Reiner, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life.

‘Brats’ Review: Andrew McCarthy Reexamines The Brat Pack Legacy – Tribeca Festival

The documentary had its world premiere today at the Tribeca Festival.

Director-writer-producer Bruce David Klein has more in mind here than just the typical soup-to-nuts story of a star, a standard docu-biopic as it were. Of course it helps to have your subject actually anchoring the tale in a new interview (as is the case with Dunaway’s full cooperation examining her own story on camera, as well as Taylor, albeit through a recently discovered “lost” interview done in the 1960s). What sets Liza apart is Minnelli’s discovery — somehow — of 25 “never before seen” hours of behind-the-scenes footage taken during a European tour in the ’70s by a crew hired by her then-husband Jack Haley Jr. It just happens to be shot during the prime period of success, heartbreak, addiction, personal relationships and marriages, movies, TV and stage stardom and all the stuff that defined Minnelli as one of the greats of her generation.

Even though Klein has extensive interview snippets with Minnelli running throughout, it is left to others to really tell her story, and chief among them is performer, music historian and trusted friend Michael Feinstein who turns out to be the glue that really holds this all together in telling the Minnelli story. Somehow keeping this all from being a talking-head-style docu, Klein has the right people on camera with much to illuminate about the subject including BFF Mia Farrow, Jim Caruso, Ben Vereen and Cabaret composer John Kander. They, and especially Feinstein, who is articulate and informed, are compelling to watch as they share stories Minnelli doesn’t.

The film is broken up into eight parts, each focusing on different aspects, perhaps the most poignant moments in talking about her personal need to be loved and an unfulfilled desire to have a family of her own (she had several miscarriages). There is talk that one of her signature songs from Cabaret (the title song is oddly omitted here), “Maybe This Time”, serves as a description of the performer herself as we weave quickly in and out of relationships with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Martin Scorsese, Desi Arnaz Jr, Peter Sellers and then more seriously with husbands Haley, Mark Gero and Peter Allen — the latter where she found real happiness despite discovery of his homosexuality. A later disastrous marriage to David Gest is described less charitably by Feinstein, who quotes Bette Davis as saying, if you have nothing good to say about the dead, don’t say it. “David Gest is dead. Good!” Feinstein cracks.

As a key to getting inside the real Minnelli, Klein focuses on those key figures in her life that she says made her who she was, the ones who “invented” her. There was early mentor Kay Thompson (a consistent figure in the previously unseen footage) who advised her not to “waste time with dull people,” songwriter Fred Ebb, the “French Sinatra” Charles Aznavour, fashion icon Halston, and Cabaret director Bob Fosse. All were responsible in their own ways for taking a raw talent born of famous parents and letting her rise to the top on her own.

Being hounded by paparazzi who wanted “her” — meaning the Liza in the sequins as opposed to who she really was — is covered here as well, as is the more decadent Studio 54 era which she came to define, despite her claim in this docu that there was nothing to the image.

Klein makes great use of all that raw footage as well as generous clips including early shows on stage appearing with her mother, who seems to be almost competing with her daughter in some ways. The movie stardom is featured basically between her Oscar-winning Sally Bowles in Cabaret and making New York New York. Not much is made of the rest of her movies, but there is plenty on her stage and TV triumphs, particularly the special Liza With a Z.

Sister Lorna Luft, co-stars Chita Rivera and Joel Grey, George Hamilton, Darren Criss, makeup artist and close friend Christine Smith, and friends Alan and Arlene Lazare also offer quite a bit of insight from their perspectives. Rivera and Alan Lazare have died since being interviewed and are given special thanks in the end credits.

Producers are Klein, Alexander J. Goldstein and Robert Rich.
