Okonjima Omboroko Campsites

Camping in Okonjima Nature Reserve epitomises the African safari experience. Your small group or family can become one with nature as they visit the AfriCat Carnivore Care Centre, track leopards, learn about the indigenous people on the Off-The-Beaten-Track’’ experience, or hike the area along some of the walking trails offered in the nature reserve. Grow attuned to the sights, sounds and ways of Namibia’s wildlife. The 5, partially-equipped, private campsites, share a swimming pool at the foot of the Ombokoro Mountains and are located in the 2000ha ‘non-rehabilitation’ park. 4 of 5 camps, have ‘sundowner-viewsites’, located from a high-point, along the edge of the mountain range.

Camping in Okonjima Nature Reserve epitomises the African safari experience....

Become one with nature

For a truly African safari experience, track leopards through the 20 000ha Okonjima Nature Reserve with a guide, followed by a sundowner and bonfire, before falling asleep beneath the stars to the sounds of jackals, the zebra and cicada songs.

Each of the 5 private, self-catering campsites consist of:

  • Fixed lights and multipurpose power points . (a ‘stand-alone’ electrical socket to charge your camper-fridge and separate power-points for all your electronic gadgets)
  • Private, under cover hot-water showers,
  • Private, flush toilets,
  • A covered, washing-up/dining area,
  • A sundowner viewpoint, (not @ PAWS)
  • Two inclusive bundles of fire wood per night. (More firewood can be arranged with your guide at an additional cost.)
  • P.A.W.S (People And Wildlife Solutions) hosts our student groups, but can be booked for a large family or group of friends as well. This is the only ‘tented’ campsite (with 10x dbl, rustic, dome-tents) and the only campsite with a water-hole, that is visited by the natural wildlife in the area.
  • Camp Chimelo and P.A.W.S cater for more than one vehicle and larger groups, while Camp Koshi, Kendi and Chilala are the smaller campsites.

Please note:

  • Guests need to bring their own tents, food and drinks, and additional fuel, as the various campsites are not catered for by Okonjima Lodge. (@ the PAWS Campsite however – guests are welcome to make use of the student dome-tents)
  • Our Ombokoro Campsites rates are split between a camping site and an activity rate. All trails and wildlife tracking activities are excluded and need to be pre-booked on arrival at an additional cost. (see rates)
  • Campers are welcome to reserve breakfast, lunch or dinner at Okonjima’s Plains Camp or eat lunch at the Day Centre (when open) with a booking on arrival, at an additional cost.

All subject to availability and booking on arrival, as preference is given to lodge guests. In terms of lodge facilities, the curio shop is also open to campers. Children are welcome, however due to the nature of some of our activities , child participation may be restricted depending on age.

All extra’s (meals and activities) are subject to availability and booked on arrival, as preference is given to lodge guests. In terms of lodge facilities, the curio shop is also open to campers. Children are welcome, however due to the nature of some of our activities, child participation may be restricted depending on age.

Activities on offer at Okonjima...

The Okonjima Nature Reserve sprawls over 200 square kilometres of undulating plains, mountainous outcrops, and riverine thickets, and it is here that leopard (Panthera pardus), the most adaptable of all the wild cats, thrive. Read more about our Leopard Research .

These intelligent, solitary predators occur in high density in the expanse of Okonjima Nature Reserve’s multi-faceted topography. The Reserve’s predator research programme has spanned three decades, and its findings have provided great insight to leopard behavioral patterns as well as offered an upbeat prognosis for a sustainable future for the species in today’s Africa.

A two-day Okonjima stay offers the best chance to view wild leopard in Namibia, as well as those collared for research purposes, in their natural habitats. Research programme leopard are actively tracked, and their collars are an invaluable resource for locating, and then returning to the Reserve, cats which have migrated to surrounding farmland where they are perceived as threats to livestock. The Okonjima Nature Reserve, a huge protected area set amongst the rugged commercial farmlands of central Namibia, comprises a diversified ecosystem representative of both the larger and small mammals of Namibia, as well as most of the country’s endemic birds.

Game drives and guided & self-guided bush walks offer visitors an intimate, up-close perspective of Namibia’s wildlife and, especially, its most protected species. The Okonjima Nature Reserve is home to and runs extensive research projects on rare and endangered species , big and small.

‘The Omboroko’ is the name of the main river on Okonjima. The Okonjima ‘mountain range’ – is also called the ‘Omboroko Mountains’. Omboroko means a natural ‘Crater’ or what seems like a ‘man-made Excavation’ in the Oshi-Herero language. There are a few natural ‘crater like formations’ in the area, which is why the Herero people named the river and the mountains on Okonjima – ‘The Omborokos’.

Meaning of the Individual Camps:

CAMP CHILALA : in the Tonga language of Zambia means, “Sleeping or a Place to Rest”.

CAMP CHIMELO: in Igbo – a language of Nigeria means, “Made by God.”

CAMP KOSHI: in a west African dialect means “ full or satisfied”

CAMP KENDI: in the Meru language of Kenya meaning “The Loved One”

P AWS: People And Wildlife Solutions – this campsite is also our AfriCat Environmental Education campsite for large groups of visiting students. (local & international)

  • Shower, including hot water per campsite
  • Flush toilet per campsite
  • Undercover scullery and dining area per campsite
  • Two fixed spotlight per campsite for cooking and dining
  • A ‘stand-alone’ electrical socket to charge your camper fridge and separate power-points for all your electronic gadgets.

Is the Okonjima's Omboroko Campsite for Me?

Camping in Okonjima Nature Reserve epitomises the African safari experience. Your small group or family can become one with nature as they visit the Carnivore Care Centre, track leopards and cheetahs, learn about the indigenous people during the Bushman trail, and grow attuned to the sights, sounds and ways of Namibia’s grassy plains.

The four, partially-equipped, private campsites share a swimming pool at the foot of the Ombokoro Mountains and are located in the 2000ha non-rehabilitation area. All four sites boast spectacular sundowner viewpoints.

Okonjima Nature Reserve is recognized as one of the premier places to stay to witness carnivores and other endangered species like the rhino, pangolin and brown hyaena in the wild and to be educated about conservation.

The AfriCat Foundation was born in the early 1990’s, a Namibia registered non-profit organization which started out primarily as a welfare organization, and has since become focused on research projects which are essential in accomplishing its mission of the long term conservation of Namibia’s wildlife.

Leopard Tracking

All activities are subject to availability and need to be booked directly upon arrival at the Lodge.

The Leopard ‘experience’ will take you out into the Okonjima Nature Reserve and will allow you to spend more time with our experienced guides and participate in the research data collection for our long-standing leopard project and newly introduced brown hyaena programme.

Some of our adult leopards are radio collared which enables the guides to track them with a specialised telemetry device contributing to frequent viewing, giving visitors an opportunity to observe these magnificent predators in their natural habitat and experience the fascinating behaviour and interactions between these two species while they compete for food.

Although this significantly increases the chance of an excellent sighting, it cannot ever be guaranteed as they are wild free-roaming predators.

Morning activities (seasonal times): Departure 06:00 / 06:30 AM; Return 09:30 / 10:00 AM. Afternoon activities (seasonal times): Departure: 15:30 / 16:00 PM; Return 19:00 / 19:30 PM.

AfriCat Foundation Carnivore Care

During the visit to AfriCat, visitors will have the opportunity to spend some time at the Carnivore Care & Information Centre, which provides valuable insights into the Foundation’s work.

The visit will include a short guided drive to the AfriCat Carnivore Care Centre, where visitors can meet some of the ambassador cheetahs. Our knowledgeable guides will answer questions, explain the Foundation’s work with carnivores in Namibia, and help position the vehicle for that perfect photo opportunity.

Endangered Species Nature Drive

This game-drive allows more time to enjoy and understand the Okonjima Nature Reserve as a natural island bound ecosystem. As the private Nature Reserve was established primarily to conserve some of our more threatened mammal species, it provides an increased chance to encounter these relatively rare animals.

This is once again assisted by the AfriCat Foundation’s research projects on the shy brown hyaena, bat-eared fox and rhino. There are more than 40 mammal species within the Okonjima Nature Reserve, both large and small as well as a good representation of the typical flora.

At the discretion of your guide, there may be the chance to view some of these animals, large or small.

The Omboroko campsite is excellent

I was skeptical of this safari as it seemed a little too planned having the cheetahs and leopards with radio collars...I could not say enough good things about this resort!! We stayed in the Private Bush Suite and it was worth every penny. The outdoor showers, private pool, fire pit, private chef, absolutely beautiful suite, and lit water hole made this stay incredible! Don't skip this if you are in Namibia and definitely make this upgrade!!

We stayed for 2 nights at Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp, which turned out to be the ideal number of days to stay here. Enough time to do all their (excellent) activities. Everything was perfect: the lodge, rooms, service, activities, food, staff, guides. I highly recommend you stay here for a couple of days at the start or end of your Namibia trip.

  • Cleanliness

We loved this place. We chose to drive straight there from windhoek airport, avoiding staying a wasted night in windhoek town. It was a fantastic first place to stay. Lodge is beautiful, people as lovely, food is excellent, awesome view of the stars, red wine and log fires, just wonderful. The cheetah/leopard/game drives were fantastic too. Definitely recommend.

This was definitely the gem on our 12 days in Namibia. Unfortunately, we were booked for only one night and on the last day before heading home from Windhoek. We arrived early afternoon and could only do the leopard tracking drive. Even though we specifically targeted this place to track cheetahs, there was no time to do that in the morning, considering the long drive to Windhoek and time to check into the airport. This facility is top-notch in all aspects (room, food, friendly staff, excellent driver guide). As with other luxury camps, there are few rooms, so booking far in advance is required. You can see almost all the same wildlife as in Etosha, except for elephants

omborokko safaris

Okonjima was our first stop in Namibia and as such was the perfect introduction. The staff were very friendly, the accommodation was absolutely superb and the safaris were brilliant. Our chalet was beautifully decorated with an extremely comfortable bed and each day mosquito nets were set up while we were out.We loved looking out onto the waterhole and watching the many beautiful bird varieties and animals such as the warthog, springbok and kudu.Next door to the chalet is another 'room' from where you can sit and relax with coffee or tea or just continue to look at the view and the animals. We made sure we had some time between safaris to do this. As for the safaris, our guide and driver Jonas was exceptional in tracking leopard, cheetah, giraffe, baboons, oryx, kudu, etc, and we also had a tracker on foot to locate the 3 white rhinos which was a memorable experience. After the final safari we visited the AfriCat Foundation education centre with Jonas to learn more about the wonderful conservation and rehabilitation work that is done there.

This is cheetah land. Fierce, fast and furry. No loud, lazy lions. These cats can’t even roar but they do like a good purr. Pitch your tent. It's safe. Go check out the work of the AfriCat Foundation.

omborokko safaris

It’s not just cheetahs but leopards too - it’s all about looking out for wild carnivores. Literally and figuratively. Camping is in the 2000 hectare non-rehabilitation area at the foot of the Omboroko Mountains. Sandy, shaded, secluded.

4 campsites which share a swimming pool. A little circle of blue in a little patch of lawn. An incongruous touch reminiscent of the early days of Okonjima. In those days the first rescued cheetah would wander up for a fuss as afternoon tea was served.

Camp Koshi: the smallest site, it can take about eight people but there’s only really room for one vehicle. The shower is under roof and doesn’t have a view but the toilet does. Bonus. It’s a bit of a walk though so take your torch at night.

Camp Kendi: both the shower and toilet are under roof and this site can accommodate more than one vehicle.

Camp Chilala: open air shower and toilet with views. This site can accommodate more than one vehicle.

Camp Chimelo: open air shower and toilet with views. This site can also accommodate more than one vehicle.

Lodge Facilities

Note: Campers are not allowed to use the Lodge facilities.

  • sundowner viewpoint
  • 2 bundles of fire wood provided free of charge

Room Facilities

  • 4 private campsites
  • private ablutions with hot water showers and flushing toilets
  • washing up area
  • 1 fixed light for cooking
  • 1 power point

Visit the AfriCat Foundation. This is a day centre so you're welcome to stop by and see what this project is all about.

Other activity options would include a visit to the Carnivore Care Centre, track leopards, hyaena and rhino. Take the Bushman trail and learn about the indigenous people.

Note: Keep in mind that the 'other' activities cannot be booked in advance. Activities must be booked direct at the lodge as this is on an availability basis - lodge guests get first pick.

Samara Oblast is a heavily industrialized region along the Volga and Samara rivers. The region rose to prominence during WWII when its distance from the war front and abundant petroleum deposits made it an attractive area for a new industrial center. The region has little tourist infrastructure, but that in itself can make for interesting travel. The capital, Samara, is of particular interest since it is one of Russia's largest cities, formerly closed to all foreign visitors, and has lots to see and do.

In the Samara Oblast, the only official language is Russian. For over 85% of the population of the region it is their native language, and the remaining 15% speak it well as a second language. Over 4% of the population here are Tatars who speak Tatar (Turkic language). Over 2.5% speak Chuvash (also a Turkic language), about 2% speak two Mordovian dialects. There are also many native speakers of Kazakh, Bashkir, Uzbek, Tajik, Eastern Armenian, Kyrgyz, Azerbaijani and Mari languages.
