Onyx Announce ‘Bacdafucup’ 30th Anniversary Tour With R.A. The Rugged Man

Onyx have announced that they’ll be hitting the road this year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their rowdy debut album,  Bacdafucup .

The lengthy 2023 trek will kick off on March 29 at Echoplex in Los Angeles and will take in a further 45 dates including stops in Houston, New Orleans, Tampa, Atlanta, New York, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Seattle and Sacramento, where the tour will conclude on May 20.

Joining Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr on the Onyx anniversary tour will be underground rap heavyweight — and one of Logic’s favorite MCs  — R.A. The Rugged Man and DJ Lala.

Bacdafucup was released on March 30, 1993 via Jam Master Jay ‘s JMJ Records and Rush Associated Labels. It peaked at No. 17 on the US Billboard 200, and No. 8 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. It has since been certified Platinum by the RIAA.

The acclaimed LP won Best Rap Album at the 1994 Soul Train Music Awards, beating out Arrested Development’s Unplugged , Disable Planets’ Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) , and Naughty By Nature’s  19 Naughty III .

Onyx’s upcoming tour will likely be the last for co-founder Fredro Starr who recently announced that he would be hanging up his mic and retiring from rap after this year .

Appearing on an episode of The Dr. Greenthumb Show earlier this month, the Onyx co-founder commented on Westside Gunn’s retirement announcement before explaining that the time has come for him to exit the game also.

“You supposed to say: ‘I’m gonna retire.’ You gotta make the comeback. Michael Jordan did it. Guess what? I’m retiring too this year. After this year, I’m done. All jokes in side pocket” Fredro said.

He added: “I’m retiring man. Thirty years of Hip Hop. This is the last year. I’m retiring. Don’t call me for no verses, nothing. I might do a show here and there.”

The group came together in the late ‘80s in South Jamaica, Queens, releasing their debut album Bacdafucup in 1993. At the Soul Train Music Awards later that year, Bacdafucup would win Best Rap Album. 1993 also saw the release of Onyx’s hit single “Slam,” widely credited with introducing slam dancing to hip hop music. 

The sometimes controversial rap group developed a cult following due to their chaotic live shows, shows which featured the members fighting each other, stage diving and throwing nearby objects at the audience. This uncontrollable energy saw a direct expression in Onyx’s signature sound and would catapult the members to a place of prime significance in the history of hip-hop music. The 2024 Tour de France's unusual route starts in Italy for the first time ever to honor 100 years since the first Italian victory in the Tour by Ottavio Bottecchia in 1924. Also, due to the 2024 Summer Olympics, the Tour de France will not finish in Paris for the first time in event history.

The 21 stages will cover more than 2,000 miles from Saturday through July 21. Two-time defending winner Jonas Vingegaard looks to become just the ninth cyclist to win at least three Tour de France races. Last year's runner-up, Tadej Pogačar, is looking to do the same. He won in 2020 and 2021 before finishing second to Vingegaard in 2022 and 2023.

Lauryn Hill And Fugees Announce Dates For 2024 Anniversary Tour

The Fugees have a famously contentious history. Personal relations were horrible between Pras, Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill for years, as evidenced by lyrics in their subsequent solo works. Fortunately, they've been able to set their differences and reunite in the mid-2000s and the 2020s. The Fugees intended to celebrate the anniversary of their iconic album, The Score , with a 2021 tour, but the pandemic led to its cancelation. Now, the trio are trying to celebrate another iconic album on the road.

Lauryn Hill's solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , turned 25 in 2023, and the singer made plans to tour the album alongside the other Fugees. Hill's vocal strain diagnosis in September, however, led to yet another cancelation . That's two major cancelations in the span of two years. As they, third time is a charm. Hill, Pras, and Wyclef Jean have announced plans to resume the tour this August. Despite being months removed from the Miseducation anniversary, the tour is still being sold as a celebration of the album. This makes sense, given Apple Music's recent declaration that Miseducation is the greatest album of all time.

Lauryn Hill Was Forced To Cancel Shows Back In 2023

The ticket pre-sale kicks off Wednesday, June 26. Regular sale will be made available two days later. Hill issued a statement regarding the tour, and the Fugees reunion, in 2023. She explained her reasoning for revisiting the two pieces of her musical past. "I’ve almost felt compelled to carry a torch. Or to keep a light shining regarding the continual performance of the Miseducation album," she told fans. "I believe there’s been a reason for that. And the Fugees coming back together for performances too feels like unfinished business we’re destined to handle."

Lauryn Hill has been busy this year. At least, that's the rumor. The singer was asked when she'd be releasing new music back in May. Surprisingly, she told TMZ reporters "soon." Her son, YG Marley, backed up the claim. "Music is on the way," Marley claimed. "For real this time." Lauryn Hill has been teasing new music for over a decade, but has never been so direct regarding a timeline. Assuming the anniversary tour goes well, and the new album comes out, Hill fans could be getting everything they've ever wanted in one year.

Wave your hands in the air, because ready or not, here they come again: Ms. Lauryn Hill and The Fugees are going back on a joint tour! The 21-date trek, announced on Monday (June 24), will mostly play in the United States before wrapping up with four dates overseas.

According to the press release, $2 from each ticket sold will go to the MLH fund, which benefits organizations that provide resources for mental health issues, women’s wellness, small business development, education and more.

The Miseducation Anniversary Tour was previously postponed in November due to Hill experiencing vocal issues. “As many of you may know, I’ve been battling serious vocal strain for the past month. I made it through each show by taking prescribed prednisone, but this can be detrimental to the body when taken in large amounts over long periods of time,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. “In order to prevent any long term negative affect on my voice and my body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so that I can discontinue the medication completely.”

“The shows that were cancelled this year will be rescheduled for early 2024 AND because of the overwhelming response, we’ll be adding new cities to the tour, including overseas,” she added at the time.

For the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2024, Cohen is backing Davis Thompson at 40-1 odds, saying, "The 25-year-old was extremely impressive two weeks ago at Pinehurst en route to a T9 finish, gaining more than seven shots around the greens and two on them. He finished T2 against a field not much worse than this one in Myrtle Beach in May and 17th two weeks later at the Charles Schwab Challenge."

Thompson, who was ranked 127th in the world last month but is No. 80 entering this tournament, doesn't have many holes in his game. He ranks in the top 25 in strokes gained: total (0.835), SG: tee-to-green (0.827) and SG: around-the-green (0.369). Additionally, his streaky putter saw him have a 16-hole streak of one-putts earlier this year, which is the longest by anyone on the PGA Tour. He's made the cut in both of his Detroit starts, including a top-25 last year, so Cohen loves him this week.

On the other hand, Cohen is fading the oddsmakers' top choice, Tom Kim, at 12-1 odds. Kim just missed collecting his fourth PGA Tour victory last week at the Travelers when he fell in a playoff to Scottie Scheffler. That was just Kim's second top-10 over 19 starts this year, which means he has the same number of missed cuts as top 10s. He also hasn't had the best success at the Rocket Mortgage Classic as he missed the cut in his start here a year ago.

The closest course comp to Detroit Golf Club is another midwestern course in TPC Twin Cities. The Minneapolis-area venue hosts the 3M Open, and Kim failed to even notch a top-25 in his lone start there. Cohen also points out the hectic schedule that Kim has chosen as a reason why he's fading him this week, saying, "This may be an unpopular opinion coming off a brilliant performance in Connecticut, but I just can't endorse a golfer at these low odds who is playing for the ninth consecutive week.
