Onboard P&O's Pacific Adventure cruise with two kids: How does it stack up?

By Dilvin Yasa | 1 month ago

One hour into our four-night Hobart cruise aboard P&O's Pacific Adventure and we discover we have a rather unique problem: our beds are so comfortable they encourage us to embrace unconsciousness the minute one of us so much as sits on them.

Ordinarily, this wouldn't be a problem late at night.

Not only is it daytime but we're on a 2,636-guest capacity ship offering over 60 activities to do each day, 18 dining options, 13 bars and nightclubs, plus a wealth of sit-down shows, a day spa and some scenic relaxation areas - some of them adults-only.

READ MORE: All the things I learned on my first cruise

Pacific Adventure

Adding weight to the problem is the fact that our cruise is a short four-night cruise, leaving myself and my two daughters (15 and nine) to highlight the daily activities schedule until they shine like the sun.

The first rule? As comfortable as our sleeping quarters are (accommodation options on the ship range from Interior Rooms, Oceanview Rooms and Balcony Rooms to Mini Suites, Suites and of course, the Penthouse Suite), we must only visit our room under extreme circumstances, and at no point are we to sit on the beds.

P&O Pacific Adventure

Even though I booked and paid for our cruise, I don't mind admitting I did it with some feelings of trepidation.

Despite the cruise line's popularity with Australian families, its surprisingly low fares (some three-night cruises start from as low as $349 per person), had me worried it wouldn't live up to expectations.

On board however, it's clear that I needn't have worried.

The Grand-class ship (homeported in Sydney's White Bay Cruise Terminal year-round) enjoyed a major refurbishment in 2022 with a multimillion-dollar upgrade that includes updated cabins, a new recreation park and what quickly becomes my favourite spot on the ship, the Byron Beach Club - an exclusive retreat on the top deck of the ship complete with a private outdoor pool, whirlpool spas and cabanas, available to suite guests and select mini-suite guests.

The kids' offerings

My girls pick up their P&O Edge Adventure Park passes, which offer 19 heart-stopping - and gravity-defying activities to enjoy (everything from zip-lining and rock climbing to laser tag) and then promptly escape to their respective kids' clubs.

There's Turtle Cove for those two to five, Shark Shack for the six-to nine–year-old crowd, HQ for the 10- to 13-year-olds and HQ+ for teens aged 14 to 17.

Aside from getting regular WhatsApp updates (our WiFiconnection is excellent - even in the middle of Bass Strait) from each of them declaring, 'Mum, we're heading over to the waterslides', 'Mum, I'm off to Karaoke' and 'Mum, can I stay out to 1am tonight pleeeeaaasssee????'I'm largely on my own, so I head up to Byron Beach Club where empty sun loungers and cabanas are plentiful and I can read - and create my own onboard itinerary - in peace.

The activities

P&O Pacific Adventure has plenty of outdoor pools, hot tubs and yes, that aforementioned waterpark, but aside from relaxing under the sun, I'm more of an indoor activity kinda gal.

Happily, there are plenty of activities for me to enjoy: over the course of the four days, I find the regular trivia sessions and evening karaoke to be real highlights, but I find God under the soothing touch of my massage therapist Diana at Elemis at Sea Spa and Salon to be the highlights.

On paper, it simply goes down as a 50-minute Remedial massage which doesn't sound anywhere near as fancy as some of the other options, but it is honestly the best massage I've ever had in my life. Not just at sea; I mean the best massage anywhere.

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

The entertainment

Live shows, whether it be an acoustic set at Byron Beach Club or the Blue Room, are plentiful, as are game shows, stage productions (there are three different shows performed while I'm onboard) as well as a Sit Down Comedy Club.

The Exclusive Blanc de Blanc Uncorked show at the Black Circus Cabaret Venue has me intrigued, not only because it's strictly for audiences 18+ but comes with a $30 general admission cover charge. I soon discover it's well worth the ticket price and then some; the show is so steamy that I leave wondering if the mere act of watching it could get you pregnant?

P&O Pacific Adventure

Like many avid cruisers, I tend to base my bookings around the quality of a cruise line's food, and several years ago, an onboard tasting of the ship's restaurants (available for trade only) had left me begging for more.

Happily, the COVID years have done little to dull the sheen of its dining options, which include everything from specialty restaurants (Luke Mangan's) Luke's Bar & Grill and P&O Trattoria to the Avalon Cafe (which does a solid flat white and excellent hot chocolate) and New Zealand Natural Ice-Cream.

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

We hit up The Pantry, the ship's buffet a couple of times, but find the three-course lunch at Waterfront Restaurant a far better option, and while we trial all of the restaurants including Dragon Lady and Angelo's, the culinary highlights are definitely the pizzas at P&O Trattoria and just about every dish on the menu at Luke's Bar and Grill.

Does P&O Pacific Adventure offer a casual pizza and burger bar? Yes, but unlike other cruise lines, you'll need to pay for these additionally, which is disappointing.

The four days on P&O Pacific Adventure pass by way too quickly, but it gives us enough time to contemplate another, longer P&O cruise later in the year.

The kids can't wait… and with this kind of value for money during the school holiday season, neither can I.

The writer paid for her own cruise.

Pacific Adventure cruise ship

Pacific Adventure deck plan review at CruiseMapper provides newest cruise deck plans (2024-2025-2026 valid floor layouts of the vessel) extracted from the officially issued by P&O Australia (P&O Cruises) deckplan pdf (printable version).

Each of the Pacific Adventure cruise ship deck plans are conveniently combined with a legend (showing cabin codes) and detailed review of all the deck's venues and passenger-accessible indoor and outdoor areas. A separate link provides an extensive information on Pacific Adventure staterooms (cabins and suites), including photos, cabin plans and amenities by room type and category.

Pacific Adventure (2001-built as "Golden Princess", last refurbished by Princess in 2015, last refurbishment by P&O Australia in 2024 February) is the second of all nine Grand-class Princess Cruises ships - together with the Princess fleetmates Caribbean ,  Crown ,  Diamond ,  Emerald ,  Grand (sistership), Ruby ,  Sapphire , Star (Pacific Encounter /sistership). In 2020, Golden Princess was transferred to P&O Australia and renamed ("Pacific Adventure") after scheduled drydock. In November 2021, Star Princess (as Pacific Encounter) joined Pacific Adventure in the P&O AU's fleet.

Golden Princess / Pacific Adventure cruise ship deck plan shows a total of 1316 cabins for 2636 passengers (max capacity 3174) served by 1100 crew-staff. The boat has 18 decks (13 passenger-accessible, 9 with cabins), 11 dining options (restaurants and food bars), 7 lounges and bars, 4 swimming pools, 9 Jacuzzis (outdoor whirlpool hot tubs), 14 elevators.

Passenger-use launderettes (laundromats) are located on decks 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. These are self-service laundry facilities with ironing boards and detergent being provided.

In comparison to Golden Princess, Pacific Adventure has a new sundeck retreat named "Byron Beach Club". The exclusive top-deck complex is for Suite passengers only (guests booked in Suite and Mini-Suite categories) and has a private sundeck area with an outdoor swimming pool, Jacuzzies (whirlpool spas), comfortable garden lounge sitting. Suite-only perks include VIP dining with concierge service and priority reservations for all onboard dining venues.

To the refitted vessel was also installed Aqua Park (P&O AU's first-ever water park with two 135m-long dual racing waterslides (stretching ~80 m / 260 ft) and featuring LED lights, sound effects, several twists and turns. The park has a separate shaded area for kids, equipped with a dumping bucket and oversized water toys.

Another new attraction is the P&OEdge Adventure Park (outdoor sporting facility with a flying fox, rock-climbing wall, and 'Walk the Plank').

Also on the top deck (aft) are located the ship's bowling green court for games of barefoot bowls.

Disney Cruise Line Gives First Look at the NEW Disney Adventure Ship

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

Disney Cruise Line is finally ready to release more details about one of the NEWEST ships joining the fleet (and we’re loving this teaser)!

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

We’ve been swooning and speculating for months about Disney Cruise Line’s latest expansions ever since they were announced at Destination D23 last year. While a few of the details about what we can expect out of these ships were shared then, it seems Disney’s one step closer to clueing us in on details about the Disney Adventure we’ve been dying to learn since its announcement!

Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship is gearing up to set sail for its maiden voyage and it’s sooner than we originally thought! The Disney Adventure ship will be one of the latest additions to the ever-growing fleet of Disney cruise ships and Disney’s teasing us with some new information about it!

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

Late last year Disney announced the name of this new ship along with details about where this ship would call home. It’s set to sail out of Singapore starting in 2025 after it’s finished being constructed in Germany.

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

On board, visitors will be treated to even more MARVEL, Pixar, and of course Disney stories to explore! The teaser that Disney Cruise Line dropped shows pixie dust surrounding both sides of the ship as the golden detailed touches are added…

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

…and we catch a glimpse of Captain Mickey , who will become the bow’s character design on the front of the Disney Adventure!

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

The teaser wraps up with a zoomed-out look of what the Disney Adventure ship will look like from the front once it’s ready to set sail and reiterates that the sailings will take place out of Singapore starting in 2025.

pacific adventure cruise ship activities

While Disney has not announced an exact date just yet for sailings, future itineraries, or anything else, we’re hopeful that more details will be announced sooner rather than later (mainly because we can’t WAIT to see the rest of this ship)!

The Disney Adventure is just one of 3 new ships coming with the latest announced Disney Cruise Line expansion. This new lineup will see the addition of the Disney Treasure , Disney Adventure, and Disney Destiny soon. The Disney Treasure’s layout, which we already knew, will be very similar to the most recent ship to sail with Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Wish. This leads us to the understanding that the Disney Adventure and Disney Destiny may share similar layouts too as sister ships with varying features, themed dining, and more to differentiate the two.

We’ll be bringing you the latest updates as they’re released about Disney Cruise Line! Be sure you’re following up at All Ears to stay updated!

News Release

Carnival corporation to strategically align portfolio and absorb p&o cruises australia into carnival cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line to boost its capacity by absorbing P&O Cruises Australia in 2025, further optimizing the company's brand portfolio creating operational efficiencies

MIAMI and SYDNEY , June 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Corporation & plc  (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, today announced that in March 2025 , the company will sunset the P&O Cruises Australia brand and fold the Australia operations into Carnival Cruise Line , the most popular cruise line in the world.

This change is the latest in a series of strategic moves designed to increase guest capacity for Carnival Cruise Line , the company's flagship brand and the highest-returning brand in Carnival Corporation's global portfolio. This will result in the addition of eight new ships to Carnival Cruise Line's fleet since 2021, including the successful shift of three vessels from sister brand Costa Cruises . In addition, the company recently placed its first new ship order in half a decade for two new Excel-class cruise ships to join Carnival Cruise Line in 2027 and 2028.

Josh Weinstein , chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. "In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line was 29% of our total capacity, and when we complete this move early next year, Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – will make up approximately 35% of our total global capacity. While our company's overall growth between 2019 – 2028 is projected to be less than 2% (CAGR), the majority will be for Carnival Cruise Line , which will grow by approximately 50% over that time period."

In addition to further optimizing the composition of Carnival Corporation's global brand portfolio, the realignment will strengthen the company's performance in the South Pacific through numerous operational efficiencies.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," said Weinstein. "However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific 's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region. Carnival Corporation & plc remains committed to Australia and we will continue to be the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships calling on 78 destinations and representing almost 60% of the market."

Building on Shared Legacy in the Region  As the P&O Cruises Australia brand retires early next year, the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will be rebranded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line brand. Pacific Explorer will exit the fleet in February of 2025. Current itineraries will operate business as usual, and guests will be notified in the coming days of any changes to future bookings as a result of this announcement.

When the transition is complete next year, Carnival Cruise Line – which has served the South Pacific since 2013 – will have four ships in the market, including Sydney -based Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa sailing seasonally from Brisbane , in addition to their new sister ships Encounter and Adventure.

Christine Duffy , president of Carnival Cruise Line . "While we plan to make some technology upgrades and other small changes to the two P&O Cruises Australia ships, they will continue to be geared to the unique Australian market with a familiar feel and much of the same experiences for P&O Cruises Australia guests. The most notable change will be the availability of our popular HubApp, enabling guests to make online dining and excursion reservations, request food and beverage delivery, and chat with other guests, among other features. P&O Cruises Australia guests will also be invited to participate in Carnival's loyalty program and promotional offerings specific to Carnival ships sailing in the region."

"Over the coming months, we will find ways to celebrate and honor P&O Cruises Australia – a valued part of our legacy and an important contributor to the tourism industry in the South Pacific ," said Weinstein. "We value the connection our P&O Cruises Australia guests, employees, travel advisor partners, public officials and destinations have with our company and are committed to building on this association moving forward as Carnival."

[EDITOR'S NOTE: This announcement does not impact P&O Cruises ( UK ), which is a separate Carnival Corporation & plc brand based in England and dedicated to the UK market.]

Adventure Activities for Solo Travelers on Cruise Ships

W hile cruises have, in the past, largely been associated with couples and families, they are becoming an increasingly interesting alternative for solo travelers who want to explore the world. A sea voyage is a great way to see many different destinations in one trip, and for solo travelers, the sociable atmosphere and exciting ambiance of a cruise ship is the perfect antidote to the loneliness or isolation that is sometimes the side effect of traveling by one's self.

And to further buck the traditional view of a cruise, they are an incredible option for adventure travelers as well! Cruise lines have recognized the growing demand for solo adventure travel experiences and have introduced a variety of options that cater specifically to adventurous explorers traveling the world on their own .

So if you are looking for an exciting trip and want something that combines adrenaline-fuelled activities with the beauty of the natural world, look for special cruise offers and discover a world of excitement sailing the seven seas. Here are a few of the highlights you can expect to enjoy as a solar adventure traveler on a cruise.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing while on board ship might sound like some kind of fever dream, but many modern cruise ships have installed climbing walls that offer travelers the chance to enjoy a spot of bouldering or belaying while enjoying the gorgeous vistas of the ocean. It is a great way to stay limber and fit while at sea and can be enjoyed by newbies and seasoned climbers alike.

If rock climbing at sea sounds far-fetched, how about zip lining? In what might just be the most adrenaline-fuelled escapade possible, many cruise ships offer zip-lining experiences to allow you to soar above deck and over the sea, almost skimming the ocean waves and enjoying the stunning views from the perfect perspective.

Surfing Simulator

The finishing touch to many adventure cruise ships is the surfing simulator. These innovative inventions allow you to try your hand at surfing (or enjoy artificial breaks as an experienced wave rider) without the need for a good surfing beach, in a safe, controlled environment. So if you love to surf but don't want to wait for the perfect destination, a surfing simulator might be just the thing!

Hiking and Trekking

Of course, many of the best adventure activities happen off the ship, on shore excursions, and hiking and trekking are some of the best ways for solo adventure travelers to explore the beauty of nature in the ports and countries they visit during their cruise itinerary. From lush rainforests to rugged mountain trails , a cruise offers exciting, challenging, and breathtakingly beautiful opportunities to connect with nature as a solo traveler.

Wildlife Encounters

Shore excursions also offer wonderful opportunities for encounters with exotic wildlife. Whether you choose to explore on your own or join organized tours and trips, no solo cruise adventure is complete without discovering the best the local fauna has to offer. From swimming with dolphins and snorkeling above vibrant coral reefs to bird watching or even tiger spotting, there is a vast array of wildlife adventures available on almost every cruise itinerary.

For solo travelers, cruises offer a wonderful if perhaps surprising way to explore the world in an adventurous way. From the adrenaline-fueled activities on board to the amazing shore excursions, there are so many things to choose from on a cruise for the solo adventure traveler.  So whether you are looking for excitement, tranquility, relaxation, or something a little more cultural, you are guaranteed a memorable and extraordinary experience as a solo traveler on a cruise.

Silver Nova Cruise Ship Review: What Silversea's All-Inclusive Luxury Cruising Is Like

June 3, 2024

Compared to mainstream cruises with their upcharges and theme-park-esque gimmicks, all-inclusive luxury cruises definitely have their charms. The staff knows your name and preferred choice of water (sparkling) as well as your nightly choice of pre-dinner cocktail. There are very few times when you’ll have to charge anything to your room or have to pay for extras because pretty much everything is covered in the (high) price of the cruise, including a selection of excursions in every port. (Note that meals at specialty restaurants do cost extra.)

Plus, there are fewer passengers on a luxury cruise than on the monster megaships, so not only is the service more attentive but also you may have a better chance of getting to know your fellow passengers.

Needless to say, the prices reflect all this indulgence.

As passengers have come to expect from ultra-luxury cruise line Silversea, the company’s 11th ship, Silver Nova , is an elegant ship with excellent food and wine as well as nearly flawless service.

Nonetheless, there are notable changes aboard the first of Silversea’s Nova class vessels. Silver Nova , which debuted in August 2023, is billed as one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built due to a design meant to give more elbow room per passenger. The crew-to-guest ratio, meanwhile, is nearly one-to-one, with butler service in every suite underscoring the sense of luxe, attentive comfort.

I sailed on Silver Nova’s weeklong inaugural voyage (at the invitation of the cruise line) from Vancouver, Canada, to Seward, Alaska, in early May 2024.

Read on to find out whether the ship’s refined and modern approach to luxury cruising is worth the splurge.

Silver Nova  Quick Facts: Launched : August 2023 Passengers : 728 Crew : 544 Size : 54,700 gross tons, 801 feet long, 97 feet wide Booking : Silversea.com , 888/978-4070

Silver Nova cruise ship review: pool deck

The ship’s innovative design, open spaces, and unobstructed views

The uniquely outward-facing, asymmetrical design of Silver Nova creates abundant wide-open spaces indoors and outside on the expansive decks, including the pool deck (deck 10; pictured above), positioned on the ship’s starboard side (on your right when facing forward). The concept recalls a rooftop deck at an upscale hotel, with great destination views from the pool, pool bar, loungers, and cozy nooks.

The ship’s design situates all the suites on four decks (6–9) at the front of the vessel rather than the back, freeing up room for light-filled public spaces with higher ceilings and allowing for continuity with all the restaurants, bars, boutiques, and other venues, located on decks 3, 4, 5, and 10. (The sun deck and cliff whirlpool are on deck 11).

Centered on the three-story atrium, which is the hub of the ship, are the Arts Café (deck 4), the Dolce Vita Lounge (deck 5), and the line’s new champagne bar, The Shelter , on deck 3. The two-story Venetian Lounge (decks 4 and 5) can seat 370 guests, and hosts live entertainment, enrichment programming, movies, and other activities.

The ship's layout and generous use of glass—more than 43,000 square feet of it, including floor-to-ceiling windows and glass-enclosed exterior elevators—make the ship feel airy and open, and bring guests closer to the sea and to the destinations the ship visits. All that glass doesn’t hurt when it comes to showing off the views, either.

Even when I couldn’t be outside on the decks or on my veranda while we cruised along Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, I could see the scenery from the glass-enclosed space at S.A.L.T. Lab (deck 10) during my cooking class and when I was returning to my suite by way of the elevators.

Silver Nova cruise ship review: Medallion Suite

Spacious suites with verandas and butler service

The interior décor in Silver Nova ’s 364 all-suite staterooms (divided into 13 categories) channels quiet luxury with an understated color scheme of gray, cream, brown, and blue—though there are pops of color throughout, such as in the artwork and pillows.

Even the smallest accommodation, the classic Veranda Suite , is generous in size, with a total of 357 square feet large enough to encompass a queen-size bed and private teak veranda. Each of these suites has a walk-in closet and big marble bathroom; many units have full-size showers and tubs.

My accommodation for the sailing was a 527-square-foot Medallion Suite (pictured above).   This lovely stateroom includes a separate living and sleeping area, a bathroom with a double vanity, a walk-in closet, a full-size shower and tub, and a large veranda.

My butler was exceptional during the cruise, offering the line’s Roman-inspired Otium spa and wellness products (such as aromatherapy bath salts) for relaxing evening baths and showers, complete with music and candles (battery-operated to reduce fire hazards at sea). She also delivered indulgent nightly canapes, coordinated my schedule by confirming dining reservations and excursions, brought room service nearly every morning, and even offered to unpack and pack my luggage.

For further relaxation at sea, the Otium sleep experience includes luxurious custom-made bedding, exclusive Egyptian cotton linens made by Rivolta Carmignani, and a pillow menu.

Silver Nova features several new suite categories made possible by the design of the ship, such as the 1,324-square-foot Otium Suites . The plush accommodations have 270-degree views from a prime corner aft location, a 431-square-foot balcony with a private whirlpool, a spacious living area, a generous walk-in closet, a large bedroom, a walk-in shower, and other included perks such as Otium spa treatments, a complimentary dinner at a specialty venue, and more.

Silver Nova cruise ship review: Silver Note restaurant

Reimagined food-and-drink venues and a destination-specific culinary program

Silver Nova has an impressive number of indoor and outdoor dining venues, with three specialty options that come at an additional cost, including French and Japanese restaurants and an ambitious 11-course tasting menu at S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table on deck 10. On a 7-night cruise, you’ll have more restaurants to choose from than evenings to dine, especially if you opt for room service any night. Additionally, there are 10 bars and lounges.

For the classic cruise dining experience, head to Atlantide (deck 3) for signature dishes, an elegant ambience, and top-notch service. An evening at La Dame (deck 4) costs extra, but the price ($160 per person) seems reasonable, considering the French menu covers caviar, foie gras, lobster, Dover sole, a selection of fine cheeses, and wine pairings with every course (showcasing wines not available elsewhere on the ship).

Silver Note (deck 5; pictured above) offered another memorable evening. The swanky setting harks back to old-fashioned supper clubs with live music (a piano player and singer during my voyage). A tapas menu lets you sample perfect smaller dishes such as beautifully sautéed scallop medallions with champagne foam, citrus marinated lobster tail, and beef tenderloin tournedos.

S.A.L.T. , an acronym for Sea and Land Taste, is the line’s immersive culinary program, created in partnership with the award-winning culinary journalist and magazine editor, Adam Sachs. The idea is to give cruisers a chance to experience the food culture of the destination they're visiting, via menus as well as hands-on activities.

S.A.L.T. Kitchen , which sits next to Atlantide on deck 3, is the ship’s other main restaurant, but instead of sticking to a set menu, dinner options change throughout the week, inspired by the cruise’s itinerary. The Voyage menu is based on the best culinary inspiration throughout the cruise, while the Terrain menu is more specific to individual ports.

Silver Nova cruise ship review: S.A.L.T. Lab cooking classroom

Entertainment and activities

While the production shows can be hit or miss on a smaller ship like this, there are other appealing entertainment options such as stand-up comedy and live music. Team Trivia in the Panorama Lounge (deck 5) is a standing-room-only hit, and history buffs will enjoy the destination lectures.

I was also impressed with the hands-on, destination-focused cooking classes I took at the S.A.L.T. Lab . Host chef Drake Robertson has a great pedigree (including working with America’s Test Kitchen ), and the classroom space is bright and open with floor-to-ceiling windows. It was one of the largest and most attractive cooking venues I’ve seen on a ship. (The view from the back of the classroom is pictured above.)

The well-appointed spa, located next to the Venetian Lounge on deck 5, has eight treatment rooms, experiential showers, a relaxation pool, a steam room and sauna, a relaxation space, and other amenities inspired by ancient Roman baths. I didn’t have time to book a treatment, but I was certainly intrigued.

Silver Nova cruise ship review: The Marquee dining venue

Not much is lacking on Silver Nova . However . . .

I love the design of The Marquee (pictured above),   the beautiful al fresco dining venue on deck 10 that features views of the ocean. The eatery serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and includes The Grill , where the Hot Rocks BBQ experience takes place in the evenings, and Spaccanapoli , where you’ll find freshly prepared Neapolitan pizza. As I quickly discovered, however, it was too chilly to dine outdoors during May in Alaska.

Worse, The Marquee is the only place where you can get a late lunch after the other restaurants stop serving and the buffet closes at La Terrazza (deck 4). So if you come back on the ship later in the afternoon after an excursion or day in port and you're hungry for a full meal, eating outside or ordering room service are the only options. (Light snacks are available at the Arts Café until 6pm, but it’s not sit-down fare).

Depending on the itinerary, having an open-air dining venue that relies on perfect weather to work well seems like an unwise choice.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, I also missed dining at The Grill. I should have made reservations for the first night when we were leaving Vancouver and it was unseasonably warm. For most of the rest of the cruise, the wind, cool temperatures, and some rain dissuaded many of us from dining outdoors, even with blankets and overhead heaters.

When it’s warm and sunny and the ship is sailing in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, I’m sure this is a very popular spot. But there needs to be an alternative, preferably indoor dining venue for a late lunch when the weather isn’t cooperating.

Silver Nova cruise ship review

Silver Nova  and its crew deliver a well-honed luxury product with excellent—but not obtrusive—service, top-notch food and beverages, entertaining performances, and the extras you’d expect from an all-inclusive ultra-luxury line. The ship is beautiful and unique and offers a refreshing and modern take on luxury cruising that doesn’t feel stuffy at all. (In fact, you can leave your extra-fancy duds at home; the ship eschews formal evenings on 7-night cruises, where the suggested attire is “elegant casual” for the entire week.)

The price may be high, but in this case you do indeed get what you pay for.

After cruising in Alaska this summer, Silver Nova will set sail for Tokyo. The ship will offer itineraries in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand over the winter, before returning to Alaska for the spring and summer season in 2025 . Go to Silversea.com for more information .

5 Ways to Use Your Onboard Credit

By Evelyn Uslar-Pietri  | Published on May 31, 2024

You’ve booked a cruise sailing from Sydney or Brisbane on Quantum Class favourites Ovation of the Seas® , Quantum of the Seas® or Anthem of the Seas® or the amped up Voyager of the Seas® and, in the process, you may have earned onboard credits (OBCs). But, as promising as they sound, they are also somewhat shrouded in mystery. Specifically, how do you access these OBCs – and once you’ve laid hands on them, what exactly can you use them for?

You will conveniently find your OBCs in your online account, which can be accessed at sign in , so you can book in the Cruise Planner before you board. Alternatively, you will find them on your Seapass® card, the personal onboard expense account you’ll use for all your onboard expenditures. When you make a purchase or pay for a service on your cruise, the onboard credits are applied. No fuss, no muss.

Now for the fun part: discovering the best ways to spend your bonus money (OR OBCs). Although many dining venues, activities and entertainment are included in your fare, Royal Caribbean® ships also offer exceptional speciality experiences - temptations you can wholeheartedly embrace with your budget-stretching OBCs!

Speciality Dining

Anthem of the Seas Izumi Sushi Chef

Foodies take note: you’re boarding one of the hottest food scenes found at sea! With scrumptious palate-pleasing options around every corner, the greatest difficulty is deciding what you want to eat! Does homemade linguine – perfectly al dente and tossed with garlicky prawns – sound like a ticket to paradise? Then head over to Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver, a Tuscan-inspired eatery led by one of Britain’s most famous chefs.

Or are you in an Asian vein, craving melt-in-your-mouth sushi and a bowl of fragrant yaki udon? Look no further than Izumi Japanese Cuisine , where every swoon-worthy taste transports you to the Far East. Classic American steakhouse fare at Chops Grille℠, fantastical whimsy at Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine , the crown of gastronomy at Chef’s Table – a kaleidoscope of delicious flavours awaits you. And the best part? Your onboard credits can take a big bite out of the tab, or even eat the whole thing up!

The Lime and Coconut Bartender Mixing Cocktails

Onboard Entertainment and Activities

anthem flow roder hp desktop

When you book a cruise on Royal Caribbean, you can rightfully expect it to be packed with every kind of top-notch adventure. From the chart-topping Broadway show, We Will Rock You on Anthem of the Seas®, multimedia production shows and the thrilling ice skating show on Voyager of the Seas® to toe-tapping live music and parties the whole family can get in on. Movie nights, game shows and wow-worthy activities, like the FlowRider® surf simulator and bumper cars at SeaPlex® on Quantum Class ships or The Perfect Storm℠ waterslide duo on Voyager of the Seas® are all included. There’s so much to discover that you could keep your crew busy 24/7 and not run out of things to do!

Fortunately, almost everything is included in your cruise, with a small handful of exceptions. Games at the Royal Caribbean Arcade have an associated fee, as do certain games at SeaPlex . Your OBCs will also come in handy on skydiving simulator, RipCord® by iFLY® and  North Star®, the Guinness Book World Record holder for tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship. With its glass-enclosed capsule rising a staggering 100 metres above sea level, you are afforded 360° views of the surrounding world. These incur a cost when the ship is at sea and are worth every single OBC, in our humble opinion!

Have you ever been curious about what goes on behind-the-scenes on one of the largest cruise ships at sea? Then hop on an All Access Tour where you’ll get a first-hand peek of the Bridge, Engine Control Room and other inner workings.

If you are particularly interested in the epicurean side of things, the Sip Tour Brunch may be your special jam (Okay. No more puns)! Led by the Chef, you’ll roam the galley gleaning its secrets before tucking into a mouth-watering brunch paired with unlimited sparkling wine. Whether you choose to book through the Cruise Planner before you board or wait until you are onboard, cheers to OBCs well spent!

SPA AND Shopping

Kate Spade Purses

Shopping and OBCs are an inspired natural pairing, much like tea and biscuits. After all, what could be more satisfying than – quite literally – freely indulging yourself? Onboard Royal Caribbean, shopping is not only duty-free but you’ll discover a superb array of stores offering fine jewellery, Swiss timepieces, designer apparel and other enticements.

While the kiddos are enjoying their dedicated complimentary programs at Adventure Ocean , you may want to plan a few hours of much-deserved me-time, beelining for the spa. An oasis of relaxation and renewal, the spa offers massages, facials and medi-spa treatments, as well as complete hair and nail services. Put your OBCs to work in the name of beauty, and walk out feeling on top of the world.

Quality “me-time” can also be about perfecting skills or picking up new ones at a class: life-defining abilities such as crafting swans out of towels or turning a napkin into the perfect place setting are free. While decorating decadent cupcakes or attending a scrapbooking class may incur a small charge for materials – which your helpful OBCs will be happy to cover!

Shore excursions and More

RCI CocoCay Snorkel Family 04111 RET EXT RGB

A significant benefit of booking a Royal Caribbean cruise is that young seafarers have their own programmes, led by thoroughly screened and trained staff. Fusing fun and education, the award-winning Adventure Ocean, is designed for 3-11 year-olds. Although included in your fare, fees apply after 10 pm. Since there is also a cost associated with our Royal Babies & Tots programme  for 6-36 month olds, your OBCs can be put to excellent use with child-care.

You can even use them for shore excursions. Take your adventure underwater and discover a whole world that’s teeming with life in the South Pacific or lace up your hiking boots and discover the natural beauty of New Zealand. For professional photo packages, internet access and other onboard expenses, your OBCs can also be readily applied.
