Deltron 3030 is an alternative hip-hop group formed by Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien and Kid Koala. The group formed in 1999 and the members of the band have performed as part of various other groups over the years.

All three members of the group are well known within the underground hip-hop scene and have built significant careers individually. Together, though, Dan the Automator on production, Del the Funky Homosapien rapping and Kid Koala DJ-ing create an epic, avant-garde production, which has attracted a large underground following in the US and beyond.

The group has produced two studio albums, both of which charted within the US Billboard 200 charts placing at 194 and 41 respectively. Their first album, the self-titled “Deltron 3030” is a concept album that details a battle between character Deltron Zero and the corporate powers that rule the universe. The album is genre bending and non-conforming throughout, and the scale of the scale of the project with its multiple collaborators, including Damon Albarn and Mark Bell, has been noted by critics and fans alike.

Deltron 3030 followed up this initial offering with “Event Two”, which was released in 2013 some 13 years after the release of their debut album. Despite the delay in between albums, “Event Two” had been in production as far back as 2004. The album placed more than 150 places higher than its predecessor; the wait and the inclusion of celebrities such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Amber Tamblyn, The Lonely Island, Damon Albarn and Jamie Cullum added to the album’s buzz and appeal. The album was a narrative sequel to the work produced for “Deltron 3030”.

Live reviews

It's reasonable to be weary of Deltron 3030 when it comes to watching them live. They took a hiatus for over a decade and then live hip-hop in general is a bit of a crap shoot. Some of it is great, some of it is really awful.

Thankfully you can put your concerns to rest because Deltron 3030 are one of the best touring hip-hop acts in the world right now. They use a live backing band who really add that extra oomph to the music that a lot of live hip-hop is lacking. In addition to that, Del tha Funkee Homosapien is a true professional who puts his all into these shows. This may be one of those "cash grab reunion tours" that have become popular in recent years, but it really doesn't feel like it. Deltron 3030 are as good as they have ever been. If you've been wanting to see these guys for years you owe it to yourself to check out one of their shows if they're coming to your area.

Even if you're not that familiar with Deltron 3030, consider buying a ticket and go into the show with an open mind. There's a very good chance you'll leave the show impressed with what you saw.

The Deltron 3030 show was amazing. Easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to. It was loud, and I was partially deafened for the rest of the night. My voice still hasn't recovered. Kid Koala's opening set killed. He brought the energy, controlled the crowd, and kept it all till the end. His remix of the theme from Yo Gabba Gabba was amazing. For realz. Two words: Open. Close. But, my god, the Deltron 3030 set was perfect. They picked all the best songs, from 3030 and Event II, put them in the right order, had such a great stage presence, just perfect. I would relive the concert in a heartbeat. Totally, did not expect the finale, but I won't spoil it for everyone else. Definitely see Deltron.

Amazing show! If you're unaware, Del is the rapper that was part of Gorrilaz back in the day. He's now formed a group with a keyboardist, bassist, guitarist, drummer, and disc jockey. The music is basically a cross between Wu Tang Clan and Rage Against The Machine. Very great stage presence and crowd vibes. And I don't wanna give too much away... but they end the show with a great classic. Definitely a recommended show. You won't regret it.

I have been a fan of Deltron 3030 for years since first hearing "Clint Eastwood" by the Gorillaz and tracking down Del the Funky Homosabien. The show was high energy and a lot of fun. Performances by the the band were very straight forward with Del rapping, Kid Koala spinning and Dan doing that thing he does. Supporting musicians were terrific, especially the bassist who really played with finesse and grace. It was a great, groovy show.

Deltron 3030 announce fall tour (US)

Deltron 3030 is excited to announce a fall tour in support of their upcoming album Deltron 3030: Event II , out October 1. The tour will feature a sixteen-piece orchestra — dubbed the 3030 Orchestra — on select dates, in addition to the three-piece touring band. Following performances at both the Los Angeles and San Francisco Rock The Bells, the tour will begin on October 8 in Boston at Paradise and end on October 25 at Mountain Oasis Festival in Asheville, with more dates to be announced soon.

Deltron 3030: Event II is Deltron 3030’s long-awaited successor to their self-titled cult-classic debut. Deltron 3030 is composed of a trinity of alt-rap all-stars: rapper Del The Funky Homosapien, producer Dan “The Automator” Nakamura and DJ Kid Koala.

With Deltron 3030, Del tha Funkee Homosapien landed where he was always meant to be - outer space. Paired with Dan The Automator , the Oakland based MC took on the persona of Deltron Zero in the year 3030. Rounding out the trio of space exploring hip hop heads was Kid Koala on the cuts. When this first came out in 2000 a lot of the backpack toting underground was hoping for the second coming of Dr. Octagon , the Automator-helmed Kool Keith vehicle. However, the concept and the MC delivered a completely different beast. Del has always been one of the more out-there lyricists to grab the mic, but he has a penchant for elaborate puns and encyclopedic vocabulary in place of Keith's X rated imagination. The basic premise of Deltron 3030 is the MC traveling the galaxy, participating in rap battles where his rhymes summon psychic powers and destroy his opponents. The trio is joined by a myriad of guests as they travel the stars, many of whom made appearances on Handsome Boy Modeling School around the same time. Deltron 3030 seems to be where the seeds for Damon Albarn 's Gorillaz project were sewn as well. The Blur frontman makes an appearance on the intro and the standout "Time Keeps On Slipping." It's in this unique setting, just to the left of hip hop, where Del shines. He is able to imagine his own world and create a stark vision of the future. One where he lives rent free while the world falls apart around him. And Del's expert wordplay serves him well in this dystopian future. Backed up by The Automator's deftly crafted beats and Koala's precise cuts Deltron 3030 is one of Del's greatest efforts since I Wish My Brother George Was Here .

The story of interstellar, Cali-Canadian supergroup Deltron 3030 started just in time for the millennial paranoia in 2000 – or, in the year 3030, that is. Comprised of turntable whiz Kid Koala , Hiero overlord Del Tha Funkee Homosapien on the mic, and Dan The Automator on the beat, Deltron 3030 can rightfully be regarded as a gathering of some of underground rap’s most creative minds.

The band’s debut album Deltron 3030 is a bonafide milestone of the alternative rap spectrum, taking the afro-futuristic trajectory from Sun Ra to Rammellzee and transformed it into one dystopian rap opera circling around the story of Del Zero’s guerilla war against the governance of future multinational corporations. Dan The Automator’s knack for cinematic soundscapes and narratives arches provided the perfect basis for Del’s graphic style of rhyming and Kid Koala’s turntable chaos, all of which triumphantly returned with 2013’s epic Event II . In this oral history – excerpted from their recent interview on RBMA Radio – the trio remember the genesis of the group, the recording of the debut album, and reveal a few unexpected fans of the Deltron sound.

Dan The Automator

I think it all started during the first Handsome Boy Modeling School record. I had Koala and Del as guest artists on there, and we’ve all been working together since then.

The first time I remember a conversation about this project was at Tibetan Freedom Concert. We were on tour together as Handsome Boy Modeling School, it was Prince Paul, Dan, myself and Del was the guest MC.

I used to be into anime and video games, manga. I used to like this game called Mega Man, and I know that they had a game called Mega Man X . It was basically the same Mega Man , but with souped-up graphics. Just futuristic. I just tripped off that and played with that same concept with myself. Still Del. But set in a futuristic world. Better raps. Souped-up raps.

Del had the very vague idea of Deltron Zero, just the character, and he wanted to go explore it, and he came to me about fleshing it out, seeing what we could take it to.

He created this character through which he could talk about his view of what the future will be like if we continue on this path that we’re on.

It was kind of like a futuristic romp, I guess, but it really actually wasn’t. There was more political stuff than we had noticed.

It’s quite a bleak outlook.

“Virus” is, I think, the first track we did. I remember feeling like, “Is Dan going to like this song?” Because the way I wrote it was unorthodox for a rap song. He didn’t say nothing. He was like, “Tight.” He didn’t say nothing. Automator, he unflappable.

Del’s always been really into computers, and, when he wrote “Virus,” I kind of had an idea of what he was talking about, but as years have passed, it’s become much more clear. Which is kind of exciting, actually, to see something like that go. But “I want to devise a virus to bring dire straits to your environment / Crush your corporations with a mild touch / Trash your whole computer system and revert you to papyrus,” is just prophetic. You hear it and you’re like, “Wow, he actually broke it all down.” That’s where people people don’t understand the genius of Del.

I’d be at my Del shows, and people would be coming up to me like, “Deltron, Deltron!” In a frenzy or something. I don’t know how to explain it, but some people just be crazy. Thinking I’m prophesizing something literally. They’ll start asking me questions about the future like I’m some kind of guru.

Some of the stuff that he’s talking about, which was just projections at the time, have actually come to pass since then. I’m not saying he’s a prophet or anything, but there was an Orwellian style of writing this, where he just connected the dots, synthesizing everything he was seeing on the news and reading about.

To me, that’s how things work. That ain’t never going to change. As long as you got people in power, usually they’re going to abuse power in some way. It takes a special person to be able to have that much power and not abuse it or it not go to their head.

It’s not like we’re clairvoyant or something. It’s like, the nature of man is the nature of man.

A lot of people listen to it like they looking for something, like I got the answers or something. I’ve tried to recognize that, too, and put that there. At the same time, I’m trying to keep it to where it’s entertainment. That’s the bottom line. If it’s not entertaining, nobody going to listen to it. I’m not trying to sit up here saying I got all the answers.

Yeah, it’s pretty bleak. It’s not a happy record by any means, but there’s hope in it too.

On the first record, I was going for electro-bleakness.

I think that’s just my manner of looking at stuff. I’m just a dark person, I guess. Dan was the person that was like, “You getting too dark. Let’s have something over here that’s a little bit lighter, something over here to pick it up a little bit.” If it was me, I wouldn’t care. Just straight to hell. Heavy metal. Dan offered that other little balance, and Koala did too.

I remember when it first came out, it wasn’t like people just got it right away or anything.

That’s just how it is, because you’re giving them something that they’re not used to. You’re in the music world, and you know everything has to be categorized. And once you do something that’s not categorized, it messes people up, it trips them up.

We finished that record, we did a ten city tour, I think, but we were all literally coming off of other tours, so we just stopped it at that. A few months later, Gorillaz came out and just super-nova-ed.

When it first came out, wasn’t nobody tripping like that. Of course, I knew that ahead of time. Nobody’s going know when it first drops. You got to give it time for people to listen to it and figure out what it is. It was some years.

It took three, four years before it found its audience and then that audience just kept multiplying somehow. The record was being passed around to people. I guess it became a little bit of a cult classic in a sense. It was odd how excited people got when I would even mention Deltron, or that we were working on some new material.

I think the first time I really peeped that was I was in the South, and there was this little kid. He was probably 11, 12. He was just spitting my raps faster than I was even saying them on the record. Like, “do do do do do do do.” He’s like, “Yo bro, Deltron 3030, my favorite out of anything. There’s nothing better.” Just this little kid. I’m like, damn, OK.

I met Macklemore a few months ago, and he was like, “That first Deltron record got me through college.” Kid Koala

I was on the set of Looper , because I did some music for the director Rian Johnson, and he introduced me to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who asked me, “Hey, you guys ever going to do another Deltron?” I was like, “What?” I also met Macklemore a few months ago, and he was like, “That first Deltron record got me through college.”

The reason the second one took so long to come out? Me. Basically, me. They gave me the music. They was ready years ago.

Del hadn’t figured what he wanted to say, exactly. And it wasn’t until a decade had passed and all this reading and research into everything from quantum theory to politics and social, economic trends. That was all stewing in his brain for a while.

I seen a lot of sci-fi fans getting into it, so I starting thinking I need to study how to write sci-fi to satisfy these fans. I don’t want people to be thinking it’s just technobabble.

It’s funny, because I’m not even into science fiction, and I have two space albums under my belt, basically, between this and Dr. Octagon .

I was looking at Star Wars . Got every Battlestar Galactica comic from back in the day. Actual tutorials on sci-fi, how to write sci-fi. Sci-fi encyclopedia that got all the terms and different forms. The dystopian future. Once I peeped that, it was easier to write.

I remember going to Oakland once, and we had played him some of the tracks we were working on, and he says, “OK, wait a minute, all right, I got it. Just loop this part.” He had all three verses written in under 20 minutes. He’s a savant that way. When it comes time to recording, he’ll always nail it, one take, two takes, he’s like that.

It took maybe a week to record the new one.

With this new record, we got some backlash in the very beginning, and it all turned around about four months later. I’m like, “That’s exactly what you guys did with the first record.”

Got recommended this album from my econ teacher while in hs and it's been one of my favorite records for years. Great concept, rapping and production and deserves a lot more praise.

An extremely creative and interesting listen throughout that has a lot of great songs scattered throughout. What really drags me into this record though is the concept as it is unique and very ambitious to attempt something like this as they are running a huge risk of it being bland as they are caging themselves in a little but they completely break down these walls and go beyond what I ever thought possible on this record. It is fun, engaging and consistently good for the whole run time. There is no song that I sat there and thought this is a bit repetitive nor did I ever get sucked out of the flow of the record. The flow does struggle a little with all the short interludes we get as they can stall the record a bit at times but they never over stay their welcome that badly. The lyrics are smart and witty and the delivery is brilliantly punchy. Then there is the sampling which is integrated perfectly and are so much fun to spot and explore. They give each song an edge and makes the music feel more in depth. The beats are phenomenal as well and sound fresh to this day. Overall, I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this record and I am very much looking forward to a lot more listens in the future.

A perfect storm. Great and interesting concept, production is cosmic, yet never overpowers Del. It's also impressive to write a "hip hopera" of this magnitude and NOT the make the lyrics corny as hell.

First of all, there's technically just 12 songs so I don't know why I see a comment about how there's 21 tracks and it's too long lol. This is just an epic record. Very creative. It took me a couple listens of a few tracks before I decided to plunge into the whole record. I also had to listen to I Wish My Brother George Was Here (Del the Funkee Homosapien) and 3rd Eye Vision (Hieroglyphics) before I could get started. But in the end I was not disappointed.

Hip hop supergroup Deltron 3030, consisting of MC Del the Funky Homosapien, producer exraordinaire Dan the Automator, and DJ Kid Koala, makes the case on this self-titled, post-apocalyptic concept album that hip hop has as much potential for considering possible futures as it does for expressing the gritty reality of urban life. Although Del lacks the vocal range of many of his contemporaries, he does have a gift for the clever rhyme. But it's really the complex instrumentation, attention to melody, and creative beats that make this album truly special, and among the greatest hip hop records ever made. The best track here is probably "3030," a song that swells with a full string section and a chorus of backup singers in way that transcends genre altogether. I had the privilege of seeing these guys perform live in front of a brewery in Bozeman, Montana, of all places, and it was clear to me that Deltron 3030, rather than being about posturing, is a group of artists who are fundamentally all about the music.

One of my favourite hip hop albums. So creative and catchy at the same time. Favourite songs: Virus, Turbulence and Mastermind.

Nah unfortunately I just cannot get into this album; at 21 tracks it’s way too long and by the end over stays it’s welcome

I can definitely see why a lot of people see this as a classic, but i found the flow a little bit boring, the lyrics and themes were pretty cool though! I'll give it another listen soon
