About Chiba

It’s not hard to see that Chiba Prefecture (千葉県, Chiba-ken ) is more than just a bed town for its western neighbor Tokyo . In fact, many tourists might find it impossible to avoid the prefecture – Narita Airport is one of the three major international gateway hubs into Japan.

Its convenient proximity from Tokyo means that major theme parks such as Disneyland , Disney Sea , and Kamogawa SeaWorld aren’t too far away from the nation’s capital.

That being said, Chiba is also known for its natural beauty and history. If theme parks aren’t your thing, try visiting some of Japan’s best beaches in southern Chiba (easily accessible from Tokyo via the Aqualine toll road), Narita-san Shinsho-ji , or enjoy the spectacular views from Nokogiri-yama. Funassyi (Funabashi City’s popular mascot character) goods are popular souvenirs!

Chiba City and Makuhari Area

1. mihama ohashi.

Located in Mihama-ku in Chiba City, Mihama Ohashi (Mihama Bridge) is a popular dating spot where you can see the industrial complex of Ichihara City, the Aqua-Line Gate Bridge, and other spots when you look toward Tokyo Bay. This bridge is apparently called “pick-up bridge” by the locals, but the fact remains that the wonderful backdrop makes the sunset truly gorgeous at this spot.

If you come when the weather is fine, on a day when you experience the radiative cooling phenomenon early in the morning, then you just might get to see Mt. Fuji across Tokyo Bay.

2. Chiba Port Tower

Chiba Port Tower, the symbol of Chiba Port that is known as a sacred place for lovers, is a place where you would want to bring your loved one so you can gaze at the beautiful nightscape together. This spot is famous as one of the three major dating spots for residents of Chiba, together with the Nakanoshima Ohashi in Kisarazu City and the Keisei Rose Garden in Yachiyo City.

The “Tenku no Enmusubi (matchmaking spot in the sky),” which is more commonly called the “Promenade of Love,” on the 2nd floor of the tower is extremely popular with couples! They have even set up an Instagram-worthy photogenic spot “Tenshi no Hane (angel’s wings)” where there are speech balloon panels for one or two persons. Couples get very excited when taking photos with them!

3. Egawa Kaigan

Chiba’s Egawa Kaigan, also known as Japan’s Salar de Uyuni (Uyuni salt lake), is a natural coast where hundreds of meters of tidal flat stretch along the coast. It is a place where you can go into the offing during low tide to dig for clams. It is rather mysterious that there are a lot of telephone poles going far out into the sea, but those have only generated buzz for this spot among drone enthusiasts and Instagrammers.

There are also many factories in the area, including the Kimitsu Works of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, and you will get to catch their beautiful silhouettes at dusk, at night and during sunrise on those calm days when there is no wind. This is a spot that boasts gorgeous contrast between Egawa Kaigan and the factories, sky and telephone poles.

* The telephone poles in the picture above have been taken down.

Maihama & Funabashi Area

1. tokyo disney resort.

Located in Urayasu City’s Maihama area, Tokyo Disney Resort is a theme park that is comprised of Disneyland and DisneySea. It is a place that is full of dreams and hopes, and simply visiting this resort will turn your frown into a smile! To this day, this evolving magical kingdom keeps on drawing in customers of all ages and nationalities. Here, you can spend a whole day with a smile on your face thanks to the fun attractions, shows, and wonderful views that you can enjoy inside the park.

2. Funabashi H.C. Andersen Park

Funabashi H.C. Andersen Park is a famous park in Funabashi City that is marked by a huge windmill. With different flowers blooming every season, this park has a landscape that resembles Denmark, especially during that time of year when the tulips are in full bloom. It is a Japanese theme park that is famous throughout Asia, so throngs of tourists come to catch a glimpse at its tulip fields and windmills. When spring sets it, this park transforms into a famous spot for viewing sakura (cherry blossoms) and residents of Funabashi come to enjoy looking at the sakura under Somei Yoshino and weeping cherry trees.

3. Urayasu-shi Sogo Park

Urayasu-shi Sogo Park is a place where you can see everything from the Chiba Bay Area to the Aqua-Line if you come on a clear day. It is a leisurely spot that you can enter for free to enjoy the sea and soak in its breeze all day long. Inside this park, you will find Niko-Niko Hiroba that is carpeted by beautiful, green grass. This spot transforms into a day campground where you can enjoy barbecue during summer. It is also home to the runway of the hot Red Bull Air Race, so the park comes especially alive during that event!

Choshi Area

1. inubosaki todai.

Inubosaki Todai is a white lighthouse that has been chosen as one of the 100 best lighthouses in the world. The scene showing the numerous strangely shaped rocks and massive rock formations, and the image of waves hitting the rocks to produce sea spray has been used in films!

Inubosaki, which juts out to the Pacific Ocean, is known as the spot of the earliest and first sunrise in Japan, so it is typically crowded on the first day of the year.

Now if you want to enjoy more of the nature that Inubosaki has to offer, then you should definitely check out the surrounding onsen (hot spring) resorts with your loved one and enjoy the view of Inubosaki Todai as it is illuminated by the setting sun, and the starry sky past 10:00 pm, after the lights at the lighthouse are turned off.

2. Toyohashi

Toyohashi, known as one of the 100 best soundscapes in Japan, has a waterfall that flows and echoes through the streets of Koedo. It creates a sound that attracts tourists who are fans of water sounds and who come for the scenery.

Locals lovingly call this bridge “Ja-ja Bashi” for its overflowing sound of water, while the willow trees lining Ono River make the scene even more special. During summer, it serves as the venue of the Sahara no Taisai Natsu Matsuri that will let you feel that good old-fashioned Japanese vibe.

3. Naritasan Shinshoji

Naritasan Shinshoji is a temple that enshrines Fudomyo-o (one of the guardian deities of Buddhism). For some reason, however, it has become a power spot for matchmaking despite the fact that it is dedicated to Fudomyo of Naritasan, the deity that breaks off all ties. In particular, Aizen Myo-o (deity of love) in the Komyodo Hall is a controversial spot that is said to enhance the vitality of people. Naritasan is a vast place, so you will get to encounter a lot of deities.

The town that was originally built around this temple is also packed with attractions! Naritasan Omotesando is a town that is filled with the aromas of the Edo period. As you walk on the approach leading to the temple, try to spend some quality time by savoring the area’s famous unagi (eel) and soaking in the atmosphere of the temple town.

Kujukuri Area

1. kujukuri hama.

Kujukuri Hama has become the talk of town lately after it was discovered that there is graffiti of the "Girl with Balloon" by the anonymous artist Banksy on the seawall of Katagai Fishing Port! It has also become famous as the site where they filmed the music videos for “Orion” by Kenshi Yonezu and “Hagan” by Fujifabric. Its beauty has transformed it as a pilgrimage site for fans.

This 66-km sandy beach that is unobstructed by reef rocks beautifully connects the coast from Taitozaki to Gyobumisaki! It is so gorgeous that it is even mentioned in the in-flight announcements on planes. In the summer, this beach is crowded with visitors looking to go for a swim since it is near the Tokyo metropolitan area.

2. Namikiri Fudo-in

Namikiri Fudo-in is a temple that is just about a 5-minute walk from JR Naruto Station. After climbing the stairs and passing through the vermilion Nio-mon (Gate of Deva), you will be welcomed by the towering Hondo (Main Hall) that is painted bright red. On the way to the Hondo, you will see the halls for matchmaking and preventing dementia that are visited by plenty of worshippers every year. The Hondo looks as though it stands on top of a vertical cliff since there was apparently a sea right underneath it at the time it was built. The view from the Hondo is spectacular as it is overlooking the streets of Naruto.

3. Kujukuri Herb Garden

Kujukuri Herb Garden is a place for barbecue and camping where you can relax while being enveloped in pleasant scents emanating from the herbs. Covering an area of around 10,000 sq.m., this garden also has a dog park, so you can come with your pets in tow. The best time to visit would be spring and summer, as these seasons will let you enjoy a pleasant stroll in the garden followed by lunch and dessert in the restaurant that serves dishes made with homegrown, pesticide-free herbs. Soothe your body and soul in the relaxing herbal aromas!

Minamiboso Area

1. tateyama family park.

If you go to Minamiboso in early spring, then the best thing to do would be to pick flowers! How about walking from the Chikura Shiramazu Flower Fields to Tateyama Family Park? This park has a vast flower garden called “Hana Hiroba” and it is filled with a million poppies from 100,000 poppy plants, which bloom each March. When the weather gets hot, you can go for a drive in Minamiboso and enjoy the flowers by the side of the road from your car, or head to Tateyama Family Park to pick some flowers.

There is no doubt that you will be healed by the beautiful view of the flowers and the colorful blooms! Inside the park, there is also a sand art on display that is more than 3m tall.

2. Flower Fields of Shiramazu

The flower fields of Shiramazu is an area where you can enjoy picking flowers while basking in the sea breeze and the soothing fragrance of the flowers that are blooming along National Route 410. From January to March, the fields are filled with such flowers as poppies, marigolds and stock flowers, making them the perfect spots for taking photos. There are rows of stores near the flower fields, so you can also buy some cut flowers.

The view from the superb spot called “Flower Line” is truly worth seeing! Expect to be fascinated by the contrast of the emerald sea, the lush mountains and the colorful flower fields.

3. Kamogawa Sea World

Kamogawa Sea World is an aquarium that showcases more 11,000 river and sea animals from 800 species, where visitors will get to watch performances by killer whales, dolphins, sea lions, and Beluga whales. With all the animals housed here, though, the centerpiece of this aquarium is still the killer whale. There are only two places in Japan where you can see killer whales, and Kamogawa Sea World is one of those two.

There are also activities where you can play and swim with various fishes, so Kamogawa Sea World has become a theme park where children and adults alike are sure to enjoy. It also boasts excellent accessibility as it offers free shuttle bus services from JR Awa-kamogawa Station.

Other Areas

1. kominato railway.

Running through Ichihara, Kominato Railway is a local railway that celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. It is a railway system that is widely famous among photographers and train enthusiasts who love taking pictures of trains. There are many photogenic spots along its route, so it was also used as a location for such movies as “Manbiki Kazoku (Shoplifters)” by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Some of the fun things to do via this railway system is to go to Yorokeikoku during autumn, or view the beautiful flowers of the 100-year-old Oshima sakura that is more commonly known as Yoichiro-zakura. You will get to enjoy the train with the lush nature of Ichihara that changes every season.

2. Umihotaru Parking Area

Umihotaru Parking Area, a man-made island in Kisarazu at Tokyo Bay, is an offshore parking area of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line that links Kawasaki City (Kanagawa) and Kisarazu City (Chiba). It was renovated and reopened in April 2019 as a building inspired by the luxurious and fabulous cruise ship, transforming it into a spot where you can relax while marveling at the Pacific Ocean. You can even see Mt. Fuji when the skies are clear, so it is the perfect place for going for a drive on a date! They say that if you and your loved one ring the “bell of happiness," which will convey your feelings to your partner, then your love just might succeed.

3. Country Farm Tokyo German Village

Located in Sodegaura City, the Country Farm Tokyo German Village in Chiba is a theme park that has been designed based on the countryside landscape of Germany. During winter, it is so beautiful that people would say it is a must-see if you want to view illumination display. It has been listed as a Japan Nightscape Heritage and named as one of the three greatest light shows in the Kanto region. While it is a place where you can come with your family, as a couple, on a trip with friends or with some other group, the one thing that you should not miss when you visit this village are the flowers in the garden! Beautiful flowers are in bloom here in every season. You can also enjoy barbecuing during summer and launch fireworks into the sky during winter.

4. Niemon-jima

Niemon-jima, an island that can be reached in a few minutes from Futomi, Kamogawa City, is the largest island in Chiba with a total area of around 30,000 sq.m. You can cross the island on a charming rowboat in 5 minutes. Chosen as one of the 100 best new sceneries in Japan, it is associated with the Minamoto Yorimoto, such as his burrow and Shoichii Inari Daimyojin. Further, the Hirano family that helped Yoritomo still lives in the island today.

On this island where flowers are always in bloom throughout the year, you can enjoy swimming and gathering shellfish by the shore. It is also home to Yomogijima Benzai-ten no Hokora (a wayside shrine), where the god of longevity is enshrined, so it is said to grant worshippers’ wishes for prosperity and long life.

5. Nokogiriyama (Jigoku Nozoki)

Nokogiriyama no Jigoku Nozoki (Peek into Hell) is a precipitous cliff in Chiba’s Nokogiriyama, a scenic spot that will make you learn the feeling of a Buddhist in training. It is located on the observation platform of Nokogiriyama, which looks like a sawtooth (“nokogiri” in Japanese), that is home to such famous spots as 1,500 statues of arhats, Hyakushaku Kannon, and stone Buddhist images. There are also ruins of a quarry pit called “Laputa’s Wall” that is visited by a lot of people.

Nihon-ji, a temple whose grounds cover the entire mountain, is a spot that is recommended for drone photography. Even though it is called a hiking trail, it would also be a great idea to drop in to feel that outdoor atmosphere. It is a place where you will feel a dose of a powerful charge from nature!

The owner of Ramen Nishiyama-ya, Naomitsu Nishiyama, is by far the most interesting ramen cook I’ve met in Japan. Not only does he serve up delicious ramen, he does it in a variety of unique “Super Jumping” styles. His shop is located around the corner of the south exit of JR Kisarazu Station, which can be reached from Tokyo in about 75 minutes. Ramen Nishiyama-ya is usually open from 11:00 AM to 4:00 AM on Monday–Saturday, and 11:00 to 9:00 PM on Sundays. If you want to meet Mr. Nishiyama, he’s usually there at nighttime. Top 24 Things to Do in Chiba

By Team Japan Switch + Hei Kin Wong | August 25nd, 2022

Situated largely on the Boso Peninsula just east of Tokyo, Chiba Prefecture draws thousands of tourists every year. Comprising a mash-up between old historic streets and buildings, and more modern constructions, Chiba brings together two powerful aesthetics. As such, it’s the perfect destination for tourists who want to see a little bit of everything Japan has to offer – both modern, and from the long ago. And surrounded, as it is, by water on all sides, the Chiba Prefecture often feels like stepping away from mainland Japan for a minute. Like visiting a secret new place altogether.

This article is a part of our extensive series on Japanese Culture and Online Japanese Lessons at Japan Switch.

Getting to Chiba from Tokyo

Part of what makes Chiba such a popular destination for tourists is its insane proximity to the Japanese capital. Depending on the chosen route, the distance from Chiba to Central Tokyo is roughly between 39 and 56 km. Chiba Prefecture is so close that it’s actually still situated within the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Chiba is also widely accessible from Central Tokyo. By far the easiest way to travel between the two is by rail, since the journey won’t take longer than 30-40 minutes. The train ride is also quite affordable, with ticket prices ranging between just $4 (Sobu Rapid Line, JR East) and $16 (Ltd Express Shiosai, Japan Railways Limited Express) . If traveling with heavy luggage, it might be wise to avoid central Tokyo, and board the train at one of the less crowded train stations in Tokyo. Don’t worry, both cities boast over 100 stations each, so there’s plenty of choice!

Alternatively, you might choose to drive. Although this adds a couple of km to your overall journey, the trip itself won’t take more than 40 minutes.

If you prefer traveling by bus, you can exit the central Tokyo station, and take a Keisei bus to Chiba. By bus, the journey is slightly longer (at around 70-75 min), with bus tickets costing $9.

What’s Chiba famous for?

The reason why Chiba is considered so attractive by tourists is that it offers a little bit of everything. Here, you’ll find some of the largest shopping centers, not only in the Tokyo metropolitan area, but the whole of Japan. Shoppers get to enjoy LaLaport TOKYO BAY (the largest commercial facility in Japan), and Mitsui Outlet Park Kisarazu, which gathers the most stores in the area.

Chiba also attracts a lot of tourists for its food. Since it’s surrounded by water, Chiba has a strong focus on fish and seafood. It’s also garnered some acclaim for local takes on traditional dishes, like ramen.

No trip would be complete without some nice scenic spots that double as photo-ops. Chiba’s got those as well, with numerous fields and open spaces that allow you to admire nature. Here, you can visit Nokogiriyama, famous for its rocky cliff stretches surrounded by sea. Chiba is also the only place from where you can see Mt. Fuji over the water.

Chiba is also a hotspot for conferences, and official business events, as it’s easily accessible worldwide from two airports (Haneda Airport and Narita Airport).

Yet another reason to visit Chiba Prefecture is its proclivity toward hot springs (over 200 of them!). Whether you wish to soak in the healing waters to relieve stress or pain, or simply wish to partake in this ancient tradition, Chiba’s got what you need.

Chiba is broken down into six main areas:

  • The Bay Area – convention and corporate facilities;
  • The Hokuso Area – historic landscapes;
  • The Kujukuri Area – water sports, seafood;
  • The Minamiboso Area – fishing, seaside resorts, seafood;
  • The Kazusa Area (Seaside) – scenic views, great for admiring autumn foliage or spring cherry blossom;
  • The Tokatsu Area  – strong agriculture.

Our 5 Favorite Chiba Dishes to Try

When in Chiba, eat like the locals. Sure, this might mean going digging for clams on the beach (very popular in Chiba). It might mean picking fresh strawberries, thanks to Chiba’s intense strawberry culture. It might also mean hitting up a nice restaurant specializing in local dishes. We figure it’d be a shame to visit this wonderful area of Japan, and miss out on an unforgettable culinary experience. So here’s what should be on your must-try list when you visit Chiba Prefecture.

Since Chiba is actually the largest peanut provider in the whole country, it’s not surprising that they’ve got a lot of peanut dishes. Chiba is actually responsible for supplying a whopping 76% of Japan’s peanut industry.

While you’re here, you might indulge in savoring some fresh peanuts, or try locally-made peanut tofu, or peanut ice cream. In Chiba, many restaurants and street food vendors offer a selection of peanut-centered dishes, so there’ll be no shortage of things to choose from.

Since Chiba is surrounded by water on all sides, it stands to reason they’ve developed more than their fair share of sea dishes over the years. Namero is actually a seafood dish created by local fishermen from the coastal Boso area.

Namero is typically made from sardines or horse mackerel (though in a pinch, any fish works). The meat is minced lightly, mixed with green onion, miso, perilla leaves, ginger (and seasoned with vinegar), then cooked.

3. Grilled Eel

Eel is extremely popular in Japan, as it is traditionally associated with curing several ailments (most notably tiredness). Grilled eel is a dish that’s been served ever since the Edo period, and has remained popular in Japan to this day. Nowhere more so than in Chiba Prefecture.

Here, you’ll come across numerous specialty eel restaurants, including some (like the Kawatoyo restaurant) that are more than 100 years old.

4. Katsuura Tantanmen Noodles

Here’s a dish with a side of history to it. Katsuura Tantanmen Noodles were actually “invented” about fifty years ago, to warm up fishermen (and women) after a long day out at sea. This traditional dish continues going strong today. Basically, the noodles themselves are served in a special soy sauce, chili oil soup.

To get the full experience, savor the noodles with ground pork and chopped onion as traditional toppings.

If you’ve heard of kumquats, you might have a general idea of what we’re talking about. Loquats, or biwa as they’re locally known, are a traditional fruit specific to the Chiba Prefecture. These delicacy orange fruits have grown in the Minamiboso Bay region of Chiba for centuries.

Harvested in late spring - early summer, loquats can be enjoyed on their own (sold as a local delicacy), or as part of various dishes. Whether it’s a glass of loquat juice, a serving of loquat ice cream, or even roadside curry, make sure you try this unusual fruit at least once.

Speaking of great food, there are many more unique dishes and food you can enjoy in Japan. Visit our Ultimate Guide to Japanese Nabe and Guide to Okinawan Food and Cuisine if you are interested in the great food Japan has to offer!

Top 5 Things to Do In Chiba (During Your Day)

Chiba Prefecture is quite large, and so most of these activities will require at least a train change.

1. Namikiri Fudo-in (成東山 不動院 長勝寺)

Situated just a short walk away from JR Naruto Station, the Namikiri Fudo-In is an old temple that invites contemplation and tranquility. The road up here requires that you go up the stairs, and pass through the vermilion Nio-mon (Gate of Deva), before arriving at the bright red Hondo (Main Hall).

Every year, the temple draws thousands of visitors, looking for help with anything from matchmaking and love, to preventing dementia, and other ailments.

2. Tateyama Diving (館山市)

For adrenaline-seekers, Tateyama Port is a must-see stop, due to its underwater activities. For a unique experience, join one of the diving tours off the port, and swim alongside banks of goldfish, and zebra-patterned damselfish.

3. Kayak through the Boso waters (房総半島)

Kayaking is a big sport off the Boso Peninsula, and sea-lovers would do well not to miss this. Usually departing from the little coastal city of Katsuura, join a kayaking party to explore the waters, and see the beauty of the Boso Peninsula.

Alternatively, if you’re in Katsuura and have some time to spare, why not join a snorkeling class, and dive deep, to swim with the tuna.

4. Flower Fields of Shiramazu (白間津のお花畑)

Shiramazu is home to vast stretches of land filled to the brim with flowers. Here, you get to take photos, and even pick a nice bouquet, all while enjoying the sea breeze. The flower fields are particularly appealing, due to the contrast of their bright colors and the green-ish sea.

5. Nokogiriyama (鋸山, Jigoku Nozoki)

Literally translated as “peek into Hell”, Nokogiriyama no Jigoku Nozoki is a fantastic scenic spot in Chiba’s Nokogiriyama. Standing on the steep cliff-top will give you a view of the entire mountainous region.

Whether you come up here to visit one of the many Buddhist statues, take some amazing snaps, or simply spend some time in nature, it’s well worth the hike.

Top 5 Things to Do in Chiba (Nighttime Edition)

One common complaint that travelers will be familiar with is the lack of activities during the night-time. If you’re a party lover, then worry not, for Chiba has a bustling nightlife. But it also offers tourist attractions that are best visited at nighttime.

1. Country Farm Tokyo German Village (東京ドイツ村)

Listed as a Japan Nightscape Heritage, the Country Farm Tokyo German Village is a fascinating spot. Designed in such a way to replicate a traditional German village, this theme park is best known for its illumination displays. At night, everything (from the castles, to the flower displays) lights up, creating one of the most beautiful light shows in the Kanto region.

2. Egawa Kaigan (江川海岸)

Also known as Japan’s Salar de Uyuni (Uyuni salt lake), this scenic off-the-coast spot offers a unique view across hundreds of meters of tidal flat. During low tide, tourists and locals congregate at the Egawa Kaigan to dig for clams. At nighttime, you can observe the silhouettes of the nearby factories or the mysterious telephone poles going far out into the water. And if you can’t sleep, you might even hang around, and witness the amazing sunrise over the low water.

3. Umihotaru Parking Area (海ほたるPA)

Don’t let the name fool you. The Umihotaru Parking Area is so much more than just a place to park your car. The Parking Area (as well as the nearby highway) lights up at night, offering a surreal view. Speaking of, drive up to the 5th floor Observation Deck, and take in the silhouette of Tokyo Gate Bridge, or the Tokyo Tower.

4. I-link Town Ichikawa Observation Deck (アイ・リンクタウン展望施設)

Located just off the South Exit of the JR Ichikawa Station, the I-link Town Ichikawa is the place to go for, if you’re craving a good view. With an observation deck situated on the 45th floor of the West Tower, it allows you to enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the city at night. Take a glass elevator to the top, and enjoy jazz concerts up on the roof of one of the highest vantage points in the entire area.

5. Daikeien Amusement Park (大慶園)

If you’re looking to spice things up a bit during the small hours, why not visit the Daikeien Amusement Park? Situated at roughly 2 km from the Omachi Station, the Amusement Park is best visited by car/taxi during the night. Because yes, you can visit at any time you want, as the park is open 24/7, and offers over 1,000 games. Craving car races? Claw machines? Karaoke? Basketball courts? The Chiba Port Tower is a popular date destination, since it’s considered a sacred spot for lovers. Explore the Promenade of Love, also called the Tenku no Enmusubi (matchmaking spot in the sky), on the 2nd floor of the Tower. Or simply sit up at the top, and take in the fabulous view, and why not, pose for a sweet couple selfie at the Tenshi no Hane (angel’s wings)?

If you’re a couple who enjoys nature and sports, as well as a little rush of adrenaline, Tarzania is the way to go when planning the ideal date. The park also features a forest obstacle course, an animal interaction area, and even a pond to take a romantic boat ride.

4. Nakanoshima Ohashi (千葉県木更津市・中の島大橋)

Last but not least, a visit to the Nakanoshima Ohashi should be considered carefully, since in Japan, this is regarded as a Holy place. Located in Kisarazu City, and accessible by train or car, this bridge stands tall at a whopping 25 m over the water. It’s the highest overhead walkway in Japan, and carries an interesting legend.

It is said that if a man crosses the bridge with his girlfriend on his back, they will get married. For this reason, Nakanoshima Ohashi is a popular place to declare your serious intentions to your lover, or in some cases, even propose.

Our favorite budget-friendly things to do in Chiba

While venturing through Japan is a source of tremendous fun, and some unforgettable memories, it can also become quite a pricey endeavor. This is why smart travelers will want to weave some budget-friendly activities into their trip schedule. This way, you’re still enjoying the best that the Chiba Prefecture has to offer, without completely depleting your funds.

1. Sakura Mushroom Garden (佐倉きのこ園)

The Sakura Mushroom Garden is a great attraction, especially if traveling with children, as it doubles as an educational activity. Entry to the Garden itself is free of charge, and visitors can pick as many mushrooms as they want, and even cook them in a dedicated barbecue area.

This is a great Chiba activity to do while on a budget, since you only have to pay for the mushrooms you’ve picked, so you’re paying both for the activity itself, and for the meal in one go.

Tip: If you want to pick larger, more robust mushrooms, we strongly suggest planning an early visit.

2. National Museum of Japanese History (国立歴史民俗博物館)

While not exactly free of charge, entry to the National Museum of Japanese History is a modest 600 yen for adults (under $5), and free for kids. Like the mushroom garden, it’s popular among families, as it’s a budget-friendly activity that also doubles as an educational trip.

Learn about Japan from 37,000 years ago, and observe the Edo Bridge Hirokoji Model, a 3D model of the Sakura town (where the museum is located) from the Edo period.

If there's one thing Japan doesn't lack, it's temples and shrines. If you are interested in visiting more of these fascinating historical sites, check out our Ultimate Guide to Shrines and Temples in Tokyo to find out more!

3. Herb Garden Pocket (デートプラン)

Choshi City is the place to go for all flower-lovers, thanks to its gorgeous Herb Garden by the Sea - Herb Garden Pocket. Spread across 5,500-square meters, this immense herb garden allows you to wander through fields of lavender (and other plants) free of charge. You can also pick flowers here, with 20 flowers costing a small sum of 300 yen ($2), and learn more about the complex history and uses of herbs in the area.

4. Hasunuma Park Children's Square (ビッグウェーブ)

Looking to budget a trip with small children? Look no further. This popular family destination offers a full-scale go-kart course, mini running track, and a mini train. While admission and parking are free, you will have to pay for the rides themselves, but the Square has lots of discount ticket options.

5. Isumi Poppo-no-Oka (いすみ市, 千葉県, 日本)

Accessible from the Isumi Railway that runs between Ohara Station and Kazusa-Nakano Station, this egg farm doubles as a vintage train exhibition. A particular point of interest is the fact that information and ticket offices, as well as the shop, are housed in old train cars. Of course, entry is free, which makes this a fun, educational, and budget-friendly visit.

Cultural Events in Chiba

Attending cultural events locally is a great way to learn more about the area you’re visiting, and about Japan, in general. This will make your visit more immersive, and strengthen your ties with the places you’ve visited. If you like, you can time your visit to Chiba to incorporate some of these events, or maybe you’re lucky enough to catch one randomly while there.

1. Katsuura Big Hina Doll Festival (ビッグひな祭り)

Over 20 years old by this point, the festival began when the city received thousands of hina dolls as a gift from Katsuura Town. Every year, between February 25th and March 3rd, 30,000 hina dolls are used to decorate the steps of the Tomisaki Jinja Shrine, and create a fun, colorful atmosphere.

2. Noda Mikoshi Parade (野田みこしパレード)

First celebrated in 1990, to mark 40 years since the municipality was established, this parade has grown into a beloved summer tradition. Celebrated on July 27th, the parade sees several mikoshi , or portable shrines, transported through the streets of Noda, amid the cheers of the crowd. The grand finale comes when the mikoshi intersect at the heart of the town.

3. Yawata Machi (八幡町)

Spanning across more than a thousand years, the Yawatammachi is by far the oldest festival in Chiba. Held annually in the Awa region, the festival sports mikoshi , as well as more Western-style festival floats from nearby shrines. The festival is held in September, on the weekend right before the Respect for the Aged Day (Sept. 19th).

4. Urayasu Matsuri (浦安三社祭)

The Urayasu Sanja Reitaisai is actually a joint festival, celebrated by three separate shrines (in Urayasu City, Seiryu, Toyouke, and Inari Shrine) that began when numerous mikoshi were donated to the shrines. This festival is a little rarer, as it’s only celebrated once every four years (same as the Summer Olympics) between the 17th and 19th of June.

5. Matsudo City Cherry Blossom Festival (まつだ桜まつり)

Celebrated in early April every year, this particular festival is a great occasion to celebrate the cherry blossom season in Matsudo City. While the town is filled with the wonderfully colorful trees, the best place to celebrate is along the Tokiwadaira Sakura-dori (meaning "cherry blossom road"), a road that’s 3 km long, and lined with cherry blossom trees on either side.

Final thoughts

10 Places to visit in Chiba Prefecture

10 Places to visit in Chiba Prefecture – Chiba prefecture is in the Kanto region of Japan, sitting east to Tokyo. Despite being the first to greet most tourists, as home to Japan’s most popular international airport, Chiba is often overshadowed by the country’s capital. It may be wise, however, to plan a quick pitstop in Chiba as it has a large variety of fun, cultural and unusual places to visit. Here’s just a snippet of what you could expect to find there, 10 things to do in Chiba:

Table of Contents

Tokyo Disney Resort

That’s right, Tokyo Disney Resort is located in Urayasu, Chiba. The resort offers all the usual magical delights of Disneyland and is home to the world’s only DisneySea.

Things to do in Tokyo Disneysea

DisneySea was officially opened in 2001 and consists of seven themed ports, all inspired by nautical tales. Disney theme parks are always fantastical adventurous places for children but DisneySea is often referred to as an Adult’s Disney park with it’s intense rides, varied entertainment, array of cuisine and easy access to alcoholic beverages.

Like all Disney theme parks , it’s not a cheap day out but considering it’s a particularly unique opportunity, it may be worth budgeting into your trip.

Kujukurihama Beach

Kujikura Beach

Long undisturbed sandy beaches are a rarity in Japan, making the pacific coast of North-East Chiba prefecture a popular destination. Kujukuri is the countries’ second longest beach at an estimated 60km and highly likely, the first glimpse you’ll get of Japan as your flight begins to descend.

The clear blue waters offer the perfect location for swimming and surfing. The area around the beach offers horseback riding, strawberry picking/eating, shrines and temples to view and cute cafes to relax in. If you are a fan of fresh fish, you may also enjoy sampling some of the beaches’ famed sardines from one of the many available restaurants.

‘SawTooth’ Mountain (Nokogiriyama)

Don’t let the name scare you away as Mt. Nokogiri is one of Chiba’s most famous mountains. In the West Coast of Chiba, standing 329 meters high, the Sawtooth mountain offers a unique experience with a temple complex hosting one of Japan’s largest buddhas carved into the side of the mountain.

It is not considered a difficult hike but the top can also be easily accessed using the scenic ropeway. The peak, known as Hell Peek Point , is a cliff poking directly out from the mountain and allows a clear view downward, offering a stunning look at Tokyo Bay, even stretching as far as Mt. Fuji , with clear skies. Here, you can also find a restaurant, souvenirs and many telescopes for closer viewing.

If you’re still not sold, remember, you’d still get a cool story out of it as you can always claim you climbed the sawtooth mountain to hell and back.

Chiba zoological park

The Chiba Zoological Park is popular amongst locals as it is famed for Futa, the standing Red Panda, who often can be found standing on his two hind legs, pretending to be people!

If that alone isn’t worth the ¥500 admission, perhaps the well organised 7 zones of furry familiars might entice you or perhaps the opportunity to get up, close and personal with some goats, sheep and horses in the petting zoo and horse riding facilities might do the trick.

The zoo is located in Chiba city and many advise taking the monorail to access the park as you could be lucky enough to be sat in a themed carriage complete with character voiced conductors.

Funabashi Andersen Park

This is a favorite spot for families as it offers something for everyone, year round splash pool facilities, a giant roller slide, climbing areas, mini-train rides, boats for rent, pedal cars, a petting zoo, pony rides and colourful gardens.

H.C Andersen is a beloved Danish writer most credited for his fairy tales (The little Mermaid, Thumbelina). Funabashi happens to be a sister city to Andersen’s home city, Odense, so the park maintains a Danish style throughout, leading to a fantastically unusual experience. The entrance fee is ¥900 with children under 3, free and ¥200 for children 4 and up.

As a quick side note, a slightly similar park is available elsewhere in Chiba prefecture. In Sodegaura City, Tokyo German Village can be found. This unique park also offers an illumination that you may not want to miss.

Kameiwa Cave

The Kameiwa cave (A.K.A turtle rock cave) can be found in the Shimizu Keiryu Hiroba park in Kimitsu city. Although originally a man made cave, it is surrounded by undeniable natural beauty.

The cave has gained popularity on instagram for the remarkable heart shape reflection the sun can create as it shines through, often compared to certain Studio Ghibli movie scenes. The heart shape, however, can only be seen at certain times, so it’s best to plan for an early morning in March or September.

Katsuura morning market

One of Japan’s top three markets, Katsuura is located on the eastern side of Chiba’s prefecture’s Boso Peninsula and this history soaked, fishing town’s market offers an array of fresh fish along with over 80 stalls selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, traditional pickles, Japanese sweets and prepared dishes. There are also some unique homemade crafts, perfect to complete your souvenir collection.

The Market is open from 6AM to 11AM everyday except Wednesdays and you may consider sticking around the area for a few hours, not only to enjoy the traditional ambience but also to sample some of Katsuura’s famous Ramen , Tatanmen, made with noodles, onions, minced meat and a dash of spice, created to keep the cold fishermen, warm.

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

The Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is a popular attraction with over 10 million visitors every year. It’s popularity is highly likely due to either its close proximity to Narita Airport, it’s undeniable beauty or it’s promise to grant prayers for business and romantic success. Either way, it’s an area that’s not to be missed during your time in the Chiba prefecture.

Along with the multiple architecturally delightful holy buildings, the street leading up to the temple also offers an abundance of interesting viewing. With hundreds of souvenir shops, cool cafes and some yummy street foods, try not to miss out on sampling unaju, a special eel dish in that area.

Lalaport Tokyo Bay

I’m personally drawn to the mall as it pays particular attention to accommodating it’s furry visitors and even offers a super pet park which includes a salon, dog cafe and dog run. How cute is that?

Chiba Port Tower

For one last glimpse of Chiba city and a view of Tokyo Bay, the Chiba Port Tower is the perfect place to end your visit. The building’s walls are made from one-way mirrors that reflect the scenery surrounding it and the fourth floor offers a dazzling, 113 meters up, view.

It’s a particularly good place to visit with a partner, not only because of the romantic night view but the second floor is known as a holy place for couples. Traditionally, couples pray to a stone in the “promenade of love” to receive good luck, before leaving a padlock with their names locked to the fence, to make a commitment to their love.

Slowing down on your way to the big city lights, hustle and bustle of Tokyo, might greatly impact your Japanese adventure especially considering narrowing this list down to just 10 things to do in Chiba prefecture was a struggle. As everything mentioned deserves to be enjoyed fully, it might be wise to plan a few days to get the true Chiba experience.

10 things to do in Chiba | Time Out Tokyo

Ten things to do in Chiba – updated

Tokyo Disneyland and Narita Airport are not the only reasons to visit. By Sarah Crago

How many times have you heard or uttered the phrase, 'There's nothing to do in Chiba.' Well, surprisingly, if you dig a little deeper, the area offers an abundance of nature and a taste of traditional Japanese life. Located just to the east of the Tokyo metropolitan area, the prefecture is surrounded by sea and rivers on all four sides, giving way to picturesque landscapes and the pick of quality produce. Within 90 minutes from Tokyo you can be wandering amongst lush rice fields or surfing sandy beaches. Here are our top ten things to do...

The ultimate Chiba top ten

Enjoy a farm lunch next to rice fields and grazing goats

1.  Enjoy a farm lunch next to rice fields and grazing goats

Brown's Field Farm is run by US-born photojournalist Everett Kennedy Brown and his wife Deco Nakajima. At their Rice Terrace Café they serve up wholesome Japanese food prepared following the theory of macrobiotics. Choose from an all-vegan menu with a focus on fermentation including homemade miso, soy sauce, umeboshi (dried salt plums), amazake (fermented rice) and pickled vegetables. The farm's own unpolished organic rice is worth the visit alone. If you want to stay overnight, they offer cottage accommodation from ¥7,000 per person per night.

Contact:  1501-1 Kuwada, Misakicho, Isumi-shi, Chiba.  0470 87 4501.   brownsfield-jp.com/cafe . Fri, Sat, Sun & hols 11am-5pm (last orders 4.30pm). From Tokyo Station, take the Sobu rapid train to Chiba Station, then change to the Sotobo line to Chojamachi Station.

Pluck ripe pears straight from the tree

2.  Pluck ripe pears straight from the tree

Chiba Prefecture has many fruit farms and is the number-one producer of the Japanese pear, called nashi. Enjoy the fruits of the season by picking your own at Ogawa Farm. Actually not pear-shaped at all, a nashi is spherical with rough yellow skin and crisp white flesh.

Contact:  4-4-3 Kunugiyama, Kamagaya-shi, Chiba.  kamagayasikankounougyoukumiai.info .  047 385 5071.  9am-5pm (Aug 25 to mid-Oct). ¥1,000, children aged 3 to 5 ¥600. From Tokyo Station, take the Joban line to Matsudo Station, then take the Shin-Keisei line to Kunugiyama Station, five minutes' walk.

Open your senses to soy sauce

3.  Open your senses to soy sauce

The household name in soy sauce, Kikkoman has been brewing the fermented condiment in Chiba since the 17th century. A visit to the Soy Sauce Museum will certainly open your nose to the soy sauce brewing process and you can learn about the maturing  moromi  mash, as well as experience different tastes and colours.

Contact:  110 Noda, Noda-shi, Chiba. 04 7123 5136.  kikkoman.com/en/shokuiku/factory.html . 9am-3pm, closed 4th Mon of the month & hols. Free entry. From Akihabara Station, take the Tsukuba Express to Nagareyama-Otaka-No-Mori, then take the Tobu Noda line to Nodashi Station, three minutes' walk.

Learn to surf at Onjuku beach

4.  Learn to surf at Onjuku beach

The sandy white(ish) beach of Onjuku on the south east coast of Chiba is the perfect day trip from Tokyo to escape the heat and hit the surf. In approximately two hours by train, you can be wetsuited up and attempting to catch your first wave. If the waves are not rolling in then opt for paddle boarding instead. Flying Sumo offers surfing and stand-up paddle board lessons in English, surfboard and wetsuit rental and surfboard storage/lockers. They even have accommodation if you’re too surfed out to get the train back. Lessons for groups of two or more cost ¥6,000 per person. Surfboard rental from ¥3,500, wetsuits ¥1,500.

Contact:  2140-2 Hama, Onjukumachi, Isumi-gun, Chiba. 0470 60 3011 or 090 3143 4462.  flyingsumo.jp . From Tokyo Station, take the Wakashio express train to Onjuku Station, five minutes' walk.

Ditch Disneyland and drink beer

5.  Ditch Disneyland and drink beer

Drop the kids off at  Disneyland  and relax with some choice ales at Harvestmoon Brewery – just a 16-minute train ride from Tokyo Station! With multiple awards under its belt, Harvestmoon is a craft brewery offering five styles of beer: Pilsner, Schwarz, Pale Ale, Brown Ale and Belgian-style Wheat. They always have a limited-edition seasonal beer on tap which is definitely worth a try. If you ask nicely, you might be able to sneak a peek at the immaculate brewery with female brewmaster Tomoko Sonoda. Or check the website for scheduled tours and tastings.

Contact:  Located inside Roti’s House restaurant in the Ikspiari shopping centre at  Tokyo Disney Resort . 1-4 Maihama, Urayasu-shi, Chiba. 047 305 5652. ikspiari.com/harvestmoon/ . From Tokyo Station, take the Musashino line to Maihama Station.

Take a cable car up Sawteeth Mountain

6.  Take a cable car up Sawteeth Mountain

Used as a stone quarry in the Edo period (1603-1868), Nokogiri Yama (which literally translates as Sawteeth Mountain) gets its name thanks to its jagged profile. The cable car takes you up to the 223m-high mountain peak from where you'll enjoy spectacular views over Tokyo Bay. On a clear day you might be lucky enough to spot Mt Fuji. There's also a restaurant and observation deck. If you’re feeling energetic you can do the one-and-a-half hour hike between the station at the top and Nihonji temple, which boasts a 31m-high stone-carved Buddha (that's more than twice as high as Kamakura’s famous Daibutsu).

Contact:  Nokogiri Yama Ropeway, 4052-1 Kanaya Futtsu-shi, Chiba. 0439 69 2314.  mt-nokogiri.co.jp/pc/p130000.php . Round trip ¥930, children aged 6 to 11 ¥450. From Tokyo Station, take the Sazanami special express train to Hamakanaya Station.

Sip organic sake

7.  Sip organic sake

Kozaki is a small town located in the northeastern part of Chiba. What’s special about this little nook is that it has exceptionally high quality groundwater, which leads to the production of superior rice, which then translates to excellent sake. So much so that the annual Kozaki Sakagura Matsuri (Kozaki Sake Brewery Festival) attracts more than 30,000 visitors each year. One of the more interesting breweries in the area is Terada Honke. Using their own organically grown rice, Terada Honke has been brewing sake for more than 330 years. The sake is made according to the ancient Kimoto method, which relies on natural micro-organisms inhabiting the air to ferment the rice. The best time to visit is during the Kozaki Sakagura Matsuri, held every March. Several breweries in the area open their doors and the sake is free flowing.

Contact:  1964 Kozakihonshuku, Kozaki-machi, Katori-gun, Chiba. 0478 72 2221.  teradahonke.co.jp/english.htm . Take the Sobu line to Sakura (Chiba) Station, then change to the Narita line (Sakura-Choshi) to Shimousa-Kozaki Station, 20 minutes' walk.

Watch the sun set over terraced rice paddies

8.  Watch the sun set over terraced rice paddies

Oyama Senmaida are the only rice fields in Japan that are grown with only rainwater, and are known for their beautifully curved ridges. These patchwork-like paddies really are a sight to behold and represent the traditions of Japanese farming. To watch the sun set over 375 terraced fields, which form a kind of amphitheatre on the hillside of Kamogawa, is truly spectacular. The fields are also lit up after dark from mid-October through early January every year.

Contact:  540 Hiratsuka, Kamogawa-shi, Chiba.  04 7093 3800. Tourism info  here . From Tokyo Station, take the Wakashio express train to Awa-Kamogawa Station. Then catch a bus bound for Hiratsuka Hongo Iki or Tokyowan Ferry Iki and get off at Kamanuma Bus Stop (about 30 minutes), then walk for about 20 minutes.

Watch the Chiba Lotte Marines play on their home pitch

9.  Watch the Chiba Lotte Marines play on their home pitch

If you haven’t worked it out already, baseball is a pretty big deal in Japan. Going to watch a stadium game is a must-do activity. Chiba Marine Stadium on the eastern shore of Tokyo Bay is home to the Chiba Lotte Marines. Check the schedule and go along to the game – make sure you support your new team with some oversized paraphernalia and enjoy the beer, yakitori and a rare glimpse of Japanese supporters being rowdy. The stadium is also famous for its big-name music concerts: the likes of Madonna and Lady Gaga have performed sold-out shows here, and the Chiba leg of Summer Sonic music festival is held here every August.

Contact:  1 Mihama, Mihama-ku, Chiba-shi, Chiba.  marines.co.jp/stadium . From Tokyo Station, take the Keiyo or Wakashio line to Kaihin-Makuhari Station, 15 minutes' walk.

Marvel at the seasons' colours at Hondoji Temple

10.  Marvel at the seasons' colours at Hondoji Temple

Flower viewing is almost a sport in Japan. People will travel all over the country to catch a glimpse – and take several hundred photos – of the perfect bloom. From the white plum blossom in February, to the famous sakura (cherry blossom) in spring, to the tulips and wisteria in May, the colours keep on coming. Irises, hydrangeas and sunflowers are in full burst in June, followed by lavender in July. And as autumn approaches, chrysanthemums (considered a symbol of the Emperor and the Imperial family) come out to play before the season's colours blanket the landscape. Hondoji Temple in Matsudo is a particularly beautiful spot to watch the changing seasons. Its garden is said to feature around 5,000 irises and over 10,000 individual hydrangea plants. But the bright red foliage of the trees in autumn is our favourite.

Contact:  Hondo-ji Temple, 63 Hiraga, Matsudo-shi, Chiba. 047 346 2121. hondoji.net/ . 8am-5pm. From Tokyo Station, take the Joban line to Kita-Kogane Station, 10 minutes' walk.
