Jog Falls Travel Guide, Shimoga: Stay & Jog falls Trek

Jog falls from bottom

Jog Falls is the second highest waterfall in India located in Shimoga district in Karnataka. Jog falls is a major tourist attraction during monsoon. Along with covering Jog falls, other places of interest that you might also be interested in are Gokarna beaches , Yana caves , Mirjan fort etc. Here is complete Jog falls travel Guide.

Page Contents

Jog falls is a major tourist spot located in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. It is located at a distance of around 100 Km from Shimoga, 30 Km from Sagar taluk, and 60 Km from the town of Sirsi . Jog falls is formed over the famous north Karnataka river called Sharavathi River. It is made up of four different falls which are combined called Jog falls.

The four major falls which form Jog falls are:

  • Roarer falls
  • Rocket falls

Jog falls drops from a height of around 253 meters or 830 feet which make it the second-highest plunge waterfall in India after the Nohkalikai Falls in Meghalaya which drops from a height of 335 meter or 1100 feet.

How to reach Jog falls from Bangalore?

Jog falls is situated at a distance of around 420 Km from Bangalore. There are direct buses from Bangalore to Jog falls. But I would advise you to go by your own vehicle in a group so that you can cover other places as well which are around. There are different routes to Jog falls from Bangalore and there are different traveling times to jog falls from Bangalore as well.

Bangalore to Jog falls by road

Bangalore to Jog falls: Route one

As shown in the route map above, route one passes through Tumkur, Sira, Hiriyur, Davangere etc. After driving for around 280 Kms on this highway, you drive another 125 Kms on a single-lane road. The drive of 278 Kms is on a double lane and sometimes triple-lane highways.

So, you would not get tired while driving and you can easily cover the major portion of the entire stretch. Last 125 Kms has to be driven on a double road, mostly state highway, however, there would not be much traffic.

Bangalore to Jog falls: Route two

Route two is another famous route which is known mostly to the cab drivers and this route passes through the town of Shimoga & Sagar. While going, we took the second route and it was not as comfortable as the first route which we took while returning.

Moreover, on the weekends, there will be a lot of traffic on this route as well especially the stretch of the last 100 km because this route is also taken by the buses. Around two in the night, we ran out of fuel and it was really difficult to find a petrol station which was open in the night on this route. Moreover, the whole drive is entirely on a double road that’s why route one is faster by one hour compared to route two.

Jog falls has got a big parking lot which also has the viewpoints made at the edge of the parking. From the viewpoint, you can see the Jog falls.

Jog falls from Jog falls viewpoint

Jog falls from Jog falls viewpoint

The parking space is really big and there are different charges for the different vehicles. For a car, it was Rs. 30 for us. Besides vehicle parking, you also have to pay Rs. 10 per person for Jog falls. The viewpoint is really wide and can accommodate many persons at a time.

Jog falls trek & steps:

You can also walk down to the bottom of the Jog falls by taking the steps which go down to the base of the falls. There is a total of 1,388 steps in total which take you down to the base of the falls. The view is really awesome and different from the bottom of the falls. There is an enclosed barred area at the bottom beyond which you cannot go.

Jog falls steps timings: 9 AM to 4 PM.

Jog falls from bottom

It took us around 25 minutes for us to go down and to climb up, it took around 40 minutes. There is a water stream at the bottom where you can fill water because while climbing up, you might feel thirsty.

Jog falls has limited staying options when it comes to staying near Jog falls. Here is a Google map view of the hotels near Jog falls in the radius of 15 Kms. Here is a list of the hotels around Jog falls:

Hotel Mayura, Jog falls

Hotel Mayura is the closest hotel to the Jog falls viewpoint. This hotel is run by Karnataka State Tourism Development Department. It has two blocks named, Sharavati and Tunga blocks with ten rooms each. Half of them are two bedded and others are three bedded.

The rates are cheap compared to private hotels. The Sharavati blocks provide a wonderful view of the falls. Check-in time is noon. Both blocks have western-type toilets but the Tunga block does not have hot water. There is one more ten-bedded dormitory in Tunga block.

Prakurthi Yatri Nivas Lodge, Near Rani falls

If somehow you are unable to get a room at the hotel Mayura then Prakurthi Yatri Nivas lodge should be the next one that I would like to suggest. What I really liked about this lodge is the location. It is just located beside the Rani falls though you cannot see the falls but yet you can hear the sound of the gushing waterfalls.

AC room costed us around Rs. 1400 and NonAC room cost us around 1100 rupees. They have warm water facilities, parking, and restaurants as well.

Jog Falls To Shivappa Nayaka Palace: 5 Best Places To Visit In Shimoga

places to visit near jog falls within 50 kms

Web Desk Updated: Mar 09, 2024 6:29 PM IST

Reveling in Shimoga's Scenic Wonders

Nestled in Karnataka's charming Malnad region, Shimoga dazzles through rich natural ecosystems set alongside cultural gems steeped in history.

This western Karnataka city wrapped in Western Ghats' emerald foil stunned me through thundering falls, hidden rainforests, hills promising adrenaline adventures alongside wildlife encounters and ruins echoing dynastic tales. Walk with me as I highlight 5 incredible attractions that shaped my fulfilling Shimoga sojourn.

1. Jog Falls Spellbinding Cascades

My Shimoga story kicked off with a spectacle that left me spellbound magnificent Jog Falls formed by River Sharavathi taking a commanding 253 meters plunge split into four cascades. I gazed awestruck at this natural wonder named Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani leaping from stunning heights as clouds of mist rose from the plunge pools. Monsoons intensify its allure when the falls transform into an unstoppable force and thunderous noise echoes everywhere.

I hiked down 1500 stairs to reach the falls base for an unimaginable view of sheer rock faces and tireless streams carving through terrains since millennia. Shimoga sightseeing feels incomplete minus witnessing the splendorous Jog Falls up close.

  • Four cascades Raja, Rani, Rocket, Roarer cascading from 830 ft
  • Formed by River Sharavathi splitting during descent
  • Stairway leads right to falls base
  • Peak flow during June to September monsoons

2. Agumbe's Magical Rainforests

Don't miss visiting the Amphibian Foundation's research center to learn about these critical ecosystems playing a crucial role in ecological balance. You may also spot the spectacular King Cobra in its home ground if luck favors! Camping overnight amid Agumbe's fairytale woods lets you soak in the divine experience wholly.

  • Conserved region with one of last surviving lowland rainforests
  • Diverse flora and fauna offering great walks
  • Home to deadly King Cobra snake species
  • Rain brings out the enchanting atmosphere

3. Kodachadri Trekking Through Clouds

My next dose of natural high came from conquering the peak of Kodachadri Hills after an adrenaline-pumping 8 km uphill trek. But once I reached the top standing tall at 1343 meters, the sweeping vistas I witnessed of rain-washed Western Ghats till the blue Arabian Sea made all effort worth it!

The route winds through Shola grasslands and Hidlumane falls midway provides a good break. Do stay back to view the sunset where golden rays permeate through clouds outlining the hills in divine light. You feel blessed sitting here so close to the heavens. Kodachadri remains etched in memory as my perfect mountain adventure!

  • Scenic moderate grade 8 km uphill trek
  • Spellbinding view from 1343 m peak
  • Sunset at peak particularly mesmerizing
  • Path via Hidlumane falls midway

4. Tyavarekoppa Safari Tryst with Majestic Cats

I discovered another Shimoga allure during my thrilling jeep ride through Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari located closeby. A large natural reserve houses big cats like lions, tigers and leopards rescued from circuses and where wildlife roams freely across grasslands.

As I held my breath, a mighty Royal Bengal tiger strolled casually crossing our road while cubs frolicked near the lake. A lion pride lounged under shady trees glancing curiously at visitors. The natural settings and conservation efforts left me deeply impressed at this unique Shimoga wildlife attraction. Don't skip it!

  • Houses rescued big cats - tigers, lions etc
  • Roam freely in semi-wild grassland habitats
  • Natural settings great for observing wildlife
  • Safari rides available

5. Shivappa Nayaka Palace Royal Splendour

My Shimoga history quest culminated at an architectural marvel from the 1700s - ruins of resplendent Shivappa Nayaka palace complex constructed under the Keladi Dynasty. Adorned with lotus ponds, fountains and temples; I visualized the magnificent palace grounds that once stood hosting music events for kings and court dancers reflecting in water channels.

Today it serves as an intriguing museum with stone idols, weaponry and inscriptions narrating dynastic tales. The indoor Durbar hall dazzles with carvings, colored glass windows and Burmese teak pillars hinting at its past glories. This site offered memorable insights into Karnataka's royal heritage.

  • Constructed in 16th century under King Shivappa Nayaka
  • Hosted royal events in heydays
  • Museum within showcases dynastic artifacts
  • Temples dot former palace grounds

Shimoga's Bounties Captivate My Soul

Through thundering falls, enigmatic woods, mountains promising magical treks, intriguing wildlife and relics ringing dynastic tales; Shimoga offered ample doses of natural and cultural allure to stimulate my senses. As much as I swooned over its charming waterfalls, verdant rainforests I lost myself tracking tigers in the wild or imagining kings holding court at the palace remains.

Shimoga's multifarious attractions from adrenaline pumping treks to glimpses into history makes it the perfect offbeat holiday spot for urban souls. One that leaves you enamored, enriched and itching for more!.

About Jog Falls

The Jog Falls is a spectacle of Supernatural Grandeur, produced as a result of the Sharavathi River falling from a height of 830 feet. The Jog Fallsis the second-highest plunge waterfall in India and its located near Sagara, Shimoga District of Karnataka state. The waterfall is known by many other names such as Gerusoppe falls, Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi. Jog Falls is a massive exuberant force of nature. If you want to see the nature's power in all its glory, then this is it. Jog falls is the second highest plunge waterfall in India. The sight of it crashing down the rocky slope in the midst of the dense greenery is not something you could forget easily. This site becomes a witness to dazzling rainbows quite often. The monsoons are therefore an extremely attractive season to visit.

The monsoon has a deep camaraderie with the fogs. The waterfall is anyway foggy at the beginning and end of the day but the monsoons love the fog so much that it simply doesn’t leave but the good news is this that nothing defeats wanderlust from reaching its destination. All you need to do is go up to the British Bunglow and view the falls from there. The misty Jog Falls is in a class of its own. Just stand in front of it and close your eyes. Let your senses take you over and feel the magic. This waterfall creates music.

‘Raja', 'Roarer', 'Rocket' and 'Rani' are the different parts of the segmented Jog falls. The Tourism department of India has created steps to reach the bottom of the falls and also steps to access a view point, which is just opposite to the falls. One most definitely gets to see the all the 4 waterfalls that join one after the other to create the Jog falls after a good rainfall. Hence, if you have completely made up your mind to say hi to Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani, make sure you visit after a heavy rainfall. Let nobody tell you otherwise. Do not forget to pay a visit to the bottom of the gorge when Linganmakki’s sluice gates are closed. River rafters need not feel left out because you are most welcome to try your sport out at Honnemardu located at a paltry distance of 20 Kms from Jog Falls.

Visitors can often enjoy picnics from safe viewing spots near the falls. Adventure seekers could enjoy water sports like kayaking and river rafting. Tourists can also opt for boating, to view a few segments of the Jog Falls more closely.

When visitors have had their fill of Jog Falls, which is almost close to impossible, there are other great attractions in the area like the Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and the temples in Sigandur, Keladi, and Ikkeri. People can take bath in the falls downstream the river. When water levels are very low it is possible go near the base of falls.

Adventure seekers can climb down the valley and can reach the base of the Jog falls. There are some 1500 steps to overcome to reach the base but the climb downstairs is one you will not be able to forget. It’s like you are entering deeper and deeper into the womb of Mother Nature. It’s ancient, it’s imposing and it’s gorgeous. You really don’t want to imagine the spot from what you’re reading here. You want to go. You really really do!

Jog Falls is situated 30 Kms away from Sagara, 100 Kms from Shimoga and 380 Kms away from Bangalore. Jog Falls can be reached by bus and train via Sagar. Nearest airports are Mangalore and Hubli.

One could also stop by the Linganmakki Dam across river Sharavathi, which is one the highest hydro electricity generating stations in India. Explorers could also visit Sigandur a small but beautiful town known for its Chowdheshwari Temple, Kanoor Fort and Thyvare Koppa Lion and Tiger Reserve. Other destinations that can become part of your holiday itinerary are Murudeshwar, Udupi, Mangalore, Gokarna and of course Goa.
