In 1820, Joel Monroe, a cousin of President John Monroe, settled in a small hamlet east of Pittsburgh. Later, he sold off small lots of his 125-acre land and encouraged commerce. In 1851, the community was granted its own post office, which was named after Monroe.

Monroeville area: Summer concerts, festivals, community sale, more

Fourth of July parade

The Monroeville Independence Day Parade will take place at 9 a.m. July 4. It will proceed west along Route 22 from the Miracle Mile Shopping Center to the Monroeville Convention Center.

Business owners, organizations, bands and groups are invited to enter a float or participate in the parade at no cost. For more, call the parade hotline at 412-856-3334. Entry forms are also available at Monroeville.pa.us . Business owners along the parade route are also invited to decorate their storefronts.

Later that night, the municipality will host its annual fireworks display by Pyrotecnico at 9:30 p.m. from the Monroeville Mall Annex on Mall Boulevard.

Young campers to perform ‘Frozen KIDS’

For the second year in a row, Gateway Musical in collaboration with Monroeville Recreation & Parks will hold a summer theater camp for students from Gateway and surrounding school districts.

After a week of learning about musical theater — with auditions, acting and vocal lessons, choreography and staging — the group will present Disney’s “Frozen KIDS,” a shortened version of the musical “Frozen.” Two performances will be at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. June 29 at Gateway High School’s Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd.

Seventeen high school student volunteers from Gateway, Penn-Trafford and Franklin Regional will participate. Staff include Gateway High School’s musical producer Mary Chase; director Eric Phelps, a Penn-Trafford and NYU’s Tisch graduate; and associate director Janine Hribal, Evergreen Elementary’s speech and language pathologist; along with several additional staff members.

Performances are free to the public, although a suggested donation of $10 is welcome.

Concerts at Tall Trees Amphitheater

Monroeville Recreation and Parks and UPMC East will host a series of summer concerts at the Tall Trees Amphitheater. Performances will be at 6:30 p.m. except where noted:

• June 30: Nomad (country rock)

• July 7: Bastard Bearded Irishmen (Irish rock/punk)

• July 14: Ferdinand the Bull (folk/indie rock)

• July 21: Jason Kendall (pop)

• July 28: Silverjaw (’90s rock tribute)

• Aug. 2-4, 9-10: “As You Like It” by Poor Yorick’s Players. Showtime is 7 p.m. all days except Aug. 10 (2 p.m.)

• Aug. 11: Buffalo Rose (folk)

• Aug. 18: East Winds Symphonic Band, 3 p.m.

• Aug. 25: 8th Street Rox (classic rock and blues)

Concerts are free and open to the public. The amphitheater is at 2447 Tilbrook Road in Monroeville.

Family Summer Fest

First Baptist Church of Monroeville and Iglesia Hispana will host a June 30 Family Summer Fest at the church, 3970 Monroeville Blvd.

The free festival will include food, Kona Ice, live music, indoor and outdoor games and activities, bounce houses and more.

Parking lot sale

The Monroeville Church of the Brethren will host its fourth annual community sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20 at the church, 481 Center Road. The rain date will be July 27.

Spaces are $10. A limited number of tables are available for $5. Baked goods and other refreshments will be on sale.

AUP invites over-50 singles to join group

The Association of University People (AUP) invites singles 50 and over, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people.

Activities include monthly dinners, social gatherings, concerts, meet-ups at local wineries and day trips. Those interested can attend three activities as guests before joining.

Peter Flaherty IV Memorial Golf Outing

The second annual Peter Flaherty IV Memorial Golf Outing to benefit a scholarship in Flaherty’s name will be held July 28 in Penn Hills.

Flaherty , a 2018 Gateway High School graduate, died in 2021 from complications related to Type I diabetes. The memorial scholarships are given to one or more Gateway students each year. Last year five students received $7,500 in scholarships.

The outing will be at 8 a.m. at 3 Lakes Golf Course, 6700 Saltsburg Road, Penn Hills. Registration begins at 7 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer. Hole sponsorships are also available. Lunch will follow at the Pitcairn Park Building at 1:30 p.m.

‘Jesus is My 911’ celebration

First Baptist Church in Monroeville will host a “Jesus is My 911” celebration on July 13.

The event is geared toward children in kindergarten through grade 6 and will include rescue vehicles, crafts, food, Bible stories and more.

It will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 3970 Monroeville Blvd. For more, call 412-373-7760.

Friends at market

Friends of Monroeville Public Library will be at the Lions Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to noon on June 29 and July 6 at Monroeville Mall.

Friends will be on hand to distribute library programs, event guides and online resource information, as well as free bookmarks for children to color.

Tickets will be available for purchase for two raffle baskets: a Giant Eagle basket or a basket with Carnegie Science Center, Heinz History Center and Lokay Lanes passes and $185 in gift cards. Winners will be drawn July 8.

Monroeville Lions Farmers Market is at 501 Mall Circle Drive, in the parking lot outside of Dick’s Sporting Goods.

History speaker series

Lifelong amateur historian Henry Bowden will present “The Battle of Bushy Run” at 7 p.m. July 15 at the Monroeville Public Library, 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd.

Born and raised in Turtle Creek, Bowden is a 1970 graduate of Turtle Creek High School. He is a reenactor, public speaker and member of many local historical societies. It is the second of a six-part series by Bowden. All talks will take place the third Monday every month, from June to November, in the library’s gallery.

Church music camp

Music Camp for Kids will be held 9 a.m. to noon July 8-12 at Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church, 1622 James St., Monroe­ville. Led by vocalist and choir director Lynn DeFalco, participants will learn songs. A performance for family and friends is planned for noon on July 12.

Camp will consist of the basics of playing a ukulele and how it can be used to accompany songs. Other activities include the elements of music, singing, games and activities, Bible lessons and snack time. Children ages 5-12 are invited to attend. There is no fee.

Participants may also choose to sing in the following Sunday’s service at Hillcrest and experience choir in a church setting. For more information, contact Kaye Wentling at 412-608-2097.

Revolutionary War service

A Revolutionary War service will be held at 10 a.m. June 30 at Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church, 1622 James St., Monroeville.

The commemoration is an effort to reenact a worship service with music and communion on the Western Pennsylvania frontier that was led by Presbyterian missionaries during the Revolutionary War.

Using biblical passages, the service will discuss themes that were tackled during the American Revolution and address issues of today’s society.

The service will be held outdoors and is open to the public. Participants are invited to bring a bagged lunch for a time of fellowship after the service.

The Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce is a diverse, member-driven organization focusedon being an advocate to promote and advance business excellence and business alliances,thereby strengthening our local community.

President & CEO ​

Sean Logan is a distinguished leader in both the public and private sectors. Since his appointment as President of the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce in November 2014, Mr. Logan has helped to enhance the Chamber’s services and resources, enabling local businesses to thrive. Mr. Logan is also the Executive Director and C.E.O of Visit Monroeville, a position he has held since January 2013. Prior to his appointment as Executive Director/C.E.O., Sean served for many years as the President of the Visit Monroeville Board of Directors. In his current role with MACC and Visit Monroeville, Mr. Logan oversees the management consolidation of both organizations, helping to streamline operations and increase efficiency.

In February 2017, Pa State Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa appointed Sean to a two-year term as a Commissioner on the Pa Gaming Control Board. This appointment was a testament to Mr. Logan’s extensive experience in government and his proven leadership skills. Before his appointment to the Gaming Control Board, Mr. Logan served as a three-term Pa State Senator representing the 45th Senatorial District in parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. During his tenure in the state Senate, Mr. Logan held leadership positions including caucus secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus, minority chairman of the Law and Justice Committee, member of the Appropriations Committee, and vice-chairman of the PHEAA Board of Directors.

In addition to his government work, Mr. Logan has held leadership positions in various organizations. In June 2013, Mr. Logan was nominated by Governor Tom Corbett and unanimously confirmed by the Pennsylvania State Senate as a Commissioner on the Pa Turnpike Commission. Governor Tom Wolf named Logan Chairman of the Pa Turnpike Commission in January of 2015. Sean currently serves as the Chairman of the UPMC East and the UPMC McKeesport Board of Directors.

Mr. Logan’s commitment to public service and his community is evident through his extensive record of accomplishments. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and resides in Plum Borough with his wife Shannon and his two children Ella and Regan. With his leadership skills and experience, Mr. Logan is dedicated to serving the Monroeville community and helping it thrive.

Amy Capcara

Director of Sales, Marketing & Events

Amy Capcara is the Director of Sales, Marketing & Events at Visit Monroeville and the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC). Amy has been with Visit Monroeville since 2010, where she has been instrumental in attracting business and leisure travelers to the area. Amy currently serves on the board of the Monroeville Finance Authority as Treasurer.

Amy has always been an active MACC member and volunteer, but began her official role in January 2023. She is looking forward to growing events and enhancing many of MACC’s wonderful programs! 

Amy’s primary responsibilities at Visit Monroeville include developing and executing sales and marketing plans to promote the destination to various target markets. She works closely with local hotels, restaurants, and businesses to help generate revenue and promote the area’s attractions. In addition, Amy implemented and oversees the VM Sports program, which promotes and supports sporting events in Monroeville. The program helps create jobs, stimulate local economic growth, and provide a positive image for the region. Amy currently serves as an active member of PA Sports. PA Sports works to attract and host international, national, regional, and local sporting events in order to showcase Pennsylvania as a viable sports event destination, fostering economic development and enriching the quality of life in the Commonwealth.

Amy’s extensive experience in sales and marketing, combined with her passion for promoting Monroeville, makes her an invaluable asset to both Visit Monroeville and MACC. She has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to the community and is a respected leader in the area. In her free time, Amy enjoys spending time with her family, cooking (with a good glass of wine), and being outside.

Chris Schnelbach

Christine Schnelbach

Director of Finance Operations

Christine Schnelbach was hired as Bookkeeper of the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2005, promoted to Office Manager in August of 2007, and promoted to Vice President, Director of Finance & Operations in 2012. Mrs. Schnelbach is engaged in the daily operations of the chamber. She is responsible for maintaining all of the financial records of the Chamber, including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and all reporting functions, as well as maintaining the membership database.

Mrs. Schnelbach brought a strong business and networking background with her. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with concentrations in accounting and finance, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Schnelbach worked for eleven years as a National Bank Examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). She evaluated the financial strength of nationally chartered banks with assets ranging from $10 million to $1 billion. During her tenure with the OCC, not only did she review the quality and soundness of bank assets and asset/liability management practices, she assisted in the development of a national program of compliance review. Mrs. Schnelbach instructed other bank examiners on implementing compliance review procedures, and acted as the Community Outreach Liaison with members of bank management teams and boards of directors.She then started her own business, Wedding Weavers, a full-service bridal consultation and planning firm, which she owned and operated for six years. During that time, she was deeply involved in several networking organizations, serving as State Coordinator of one, and Speakers’ Bureau Chair of another. She also authored major portions of a popular local wedding planner publication.

After selling Wedding Weavers, Mrs. Schnelbach worked for a local design firm which specialized in window treatments and soft goods. In addition to maintaining all accounting and financial records, Mrs. Schnelbach acted as Project Manager for large health care, commercial and hospitality clients, assisting in the design process and implementation of the design.

Mrs. Schnelbach, who was raised in Monroeville, has been married to her husband Bob for 30 years. They have one adult daughter, Samantha Rathjen.

Tammy Gary

Membership Coordinator

Tammy Gary is a dedicated Membership Coordinator at the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce in Pennsylvania. She has been an active member of the Monroeville business community for over two decades. Tammy is known for her exceptional leadership skills, and her commitment to building strong relationships with clients.

Tammy started her business, Ad Specialties of Pittsburgh, in 1993. The company provides promotional products to businesses and organizations in the Pittsburgh area. In 1995, Tammy joined the MACC as a member and quickly became involved in the organization’s activities. She has served on the membership committee since 1996 and was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014. She spent six years on the Board, including one year as the Chair.

Tammy’s hard work and dedication to the MACC did not go unnoticed. In January 2023, she was officially welcomed as the Membership Coordinator. Tammy is now responsible for managing the membership base, developing relationships with new members, and is responsible for welcoming new members, ribbon cuttings, weekly MORE meetings, and ensuring all members receive the benefits of being part of the Chamber of Commerce.

When she’s not working, Tammy enjoys hanging out with her friends at Anthony’s, reading, and spoiling her cat. Tammy’s dedication to her work and passion for her community make her an invaluable asset to the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Dinosaur Adventure is a one-of-a-kind exhibit featuring realistic, life-sized dinosaurs that come alive with their life-like movement and roars.

Children’s Activities:  As part of the Dinosaur Adventure, children of all ages will enjoy a variety of activities: Jurassic scooters, themed obstacle courses, riding their favorite dinosaur, and more! *Excludes mining area and face painting* These tickets can be purchased separately at the gift shop.  *Socks are required for the bounce houses*

Last entry is one hour before close.

Tickets are nonrefundable unless the event is cancelled.
